DHL Supply Chain is looking to show the market “absolute clear differentiation” from its rival 3PLs under the leadership of its new UK and Ireland chief executive Paul Dyer (right). Speaking exclusively to MT – in an interview that can be listened to as a podcast on the new-look motortransport. co.uk – Dyer questioned the current levels of differentiation between the main 3PL players. “Of the big 3PLs is there much differentiation between them? Our goal for the next 18 to 24 months is to show there is clear differentiation between the big 3PLs and at the same time worry about some of the newer, emerging players that are doing things a bit differently and being successful,” he said. Dyer said over the next 12 months DHL Supply Chain

would “look like a UK- and Ireland-focused business” as opposed to having sectorfocused business units. “While I don’t want to lose that focus, one of the challenges is to use our strengths and expertise more widely. Our customers want innovation and best practice from multiple sectors,” Dyer said. “A year from now you will see a one-team approach, so we can start harnessing some of our scale and expertise and have a fantastic offering against the competition.” Looking at the long term, Dyer said in four or five years time he sees DHL Supply Chain with warehousing and transportation at the core of its business but he would like to see a more standardised approach. He said the business needed to prove it could run warehousing and transporta-

tion better than anybody else with “more efficient working; better systems; better innovation”. “I would like it to be a renowned supply chain management company,” Dyer added. ■ The full interview with Dyer can be accessed via iTunes or Soundcloud by searching Motor Transport Podcasts.

Fire at Arrow XL Worcester site A fire at Arrow XL’s Worcester warehouse has been declared a major incident by the police. The blaze broke out in the 200,000ft2 building on the Blackpole Trading Estate at 8.30am last T hursday (20 April). Arrow XL said between 150 and 200 employees were on site at all times but all were evacuated safely. A statement from the two-man delivery firm said it had a recovery plan in place, and added plans for it to operate temporarily out of a “group owned site” were being finalised. The Worcester site is one of Arrow XL’s four main hubs, and services the Midlands and South West. Arrow XL chief operations officer Charlie Shiels said: “It is our intention to be back up and running in a matter of days. The support of our colleagues has been amazing and proves what a great team ArrowXL is. We have plans in place for disruptions such as this.”

Virtual loading bay on trial in south London A virtual loading bay that allows operators to pay for a time slot to load/unload on restricted kerb space is to be trialled in Wandsworth, southwest London. The kerb virtual parking system is one of a series of projects aimed at improving the transport, energy and infrastructure in cities as part of Innovate UK’s £19m first of a kind deployment competition. Grid Smarter Cities, which designed the website, said the system would allow drivers to park closer to their delivery point without causing congestion or risking a penalty charge notice (PCN). Local authorities will decide the fee and which locations are to be used. These can be vehicle- and time-specific to help nudge behaviour into off-peak periods and to prioritise lowemission vehicles. This could help local authorities manage poor air quality hotspots, encourage the use of cleaner delivery vehicles and improve traffic flow across the borough. Grid Smarter Cities added that the system should slash costs associated with administering and receiving PCNs for councils and operators.

Palletways also welcomes PET Warehousing covering five Leicester postcodes

Palletforce adds Circle Express to membership By Emma Shone

Circle Express has become Palletforce’s third new member of 2017, while Palletways has welcomed a new haulier in the Leicester area. Circle Express will cover west London, joining UK Freight Masters and QTR Transport in the network’s coverage of the capital. MD Tom Ryan said: “Joining the UK’s leading distribution network strengthens our position in a growing market, and the prospect of offering guaranteed next-day delivery reinforces our reputa-

tion as a one-stop solution for freight forwarders.” Last year Rico Logistics bought a majority sharehold-

ing in loss-making Circle Express. Palletforce chief executive Michael Conroy said: “Circle

Express is a major player in the UK logistics industry, with a deserved reputation for firstclass service, and it will be a valuable addition to the network at a time of major expansion and investment.” In Leicester, PET Warehousing has joined Palletways and will cover the LE4, LE5, LE7, LE13 and LE14 postcodes. PET Warehousing MD Vanessa Perry said: “We decided to join Palletways because of its mature domestic and pan-European networks. It is ahead in terms of innovation and technology.”

Transport sector struggling financially, says insolvency specialist The transport sector is showing increasing signs of financial strain, according to insolvency specialist Begbies Traynor. The firm’s Red Flag Alert research revealed a 16% rise in the number of road freight companies showing financial distress. The research, which monitors the financial health of UK

road freight companies, found increased cost pressure from rising fuel prices and the uncertainty created by Brexit has resulted in 2,487 companies classified as under significant financial distress in Q1, compared with 2,153 in Q4 2016. Begbies Traynor partner Julie Palmer said: “Levels of financial distress have

increased significantly over the past year, and nowhere more so than in the transport and logistics sector, which continues to be hit by fuel price inflation.” Begbies Traynor executive chairman Ric Traynor said rising energy and food prices, along with a fall in the value of sterling and uncertainty surrounding Brexit, is contin-

uing to put additional strain on the UK supply chain. He warned against firms adopting a wait-and-see approach. “They will need to rapidly invest to improve efficiency or renegotiate prices with customers to avoid the risk of falling into severe financial distress in the coming months,” he said.

More than 350 million shares will be available from tomorrow with £122m of gross proceeds going to the firm

Eddie Stobart ready for AIM By Chris Druce

Eddie Stobart Logistics will list on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) tomorrow (25 April) at 8am, a move that will see former owner Stobart Group slash its holding in the haulier and pocket £113.1m. In an admission document published last week, Eddie Stobart Logistics stated it would issue 357,918,800 ordinary shares of 1p each, comprising 276,668,800 existing ordinary shares as well as 81,250,000 new ordinary shares, priced at £1.60. The company said it anticipated its market capitalisation, at this point, would be £572.7m with £122m of these gross proceeds going to the company to fund operations and growth, including acquisitions. Post admission, two-thirds of the company (65.8%) will be owned by five shareholders.

The majority shareholder will remain Greenwhitestar Holding Company 2 (with 30%). It currently has a 51% controlling stake in the business and is the holding company for funds managed by DouglasBay Capital. The other four significant shareholders will be Woodford Asset Management (19.9%); AXA Investment Managers UK (7%); Invesco Asset Management (5.1%); and Schroders Investment Management (3.8%). Stobart Group, which spun off the haulage business in 2014 but retained a 49% holding, will bank £113.1m by selling some of its stake at £1.60 a share. It will have a retained shareholding of £71.5m after the admission, representing 12.5% of Eddie Stobart’s share capital on AIM. Stobart Group said: “The

group has no plans to sell its remaining stake in Eddie Stobart and has agreed to standard lock-up arrangements for six months.” Earlier this month it was revealed that William Stobart (above) stepped down as a

director at the company that bears his name ahead of the listing. William Stobart is one of four directors to step down at Eddie Stobart Logistics, alongside Ian Duncan, Saki Riffner, and Ben Whawell. New directors have been

appointed, including chief executive Alex Laffey, chief financial officer Damien Harte and Philip Swatman as an independent non-executive chairman. Stephen Harley and Christopher Casey are both non-executive directors.

JE NE SAIS QUOI: XPO Logistics Europe plans to invest millions of euros in Renault Range D and T trucks over the next two years. At a ceremony in Renault Trucks Square in Lyon earlier this month, Renault Trucks president Bruno Blin handed the keys to the 2,500th Renault Trucks Euro-6 vehicle – which will join the XPO Logistics Europe fleet – to Luis Angel Gomez, MD, transport solutions Europe at XPO Logistics. Gomez said: “The renewing of our long-standing collaboration with Renault [which stretches back to before Norbert Dentressangle was acquired by XPO in 2015] is proof of our desire to continue investing in a French fleet.” Blin said: “Delivery of this 2,500th truck and the signing of this two-year contract demonstrate the confidence XPO Logistics has in our brand and the quality of French products.”

Increased use of robotics and new technologies could lead to 900,000 job losses

Automation puts jobs at risk By Chris Druce

Transport and storage is one of four UK sectors that is most at risk of losing jobs because of automation, according to the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR). The institute’s Skills 2020 report looked at sectors with the highest potential for automation, drawing up a worstcase scenario for each. According to the analysis of

the UK labour market, 58% of jobs in transport and storage, or 912,402 positions, are at risk of automation. The other sectors most at risk are wholesale, retail, repair of vehicles (64%); accommodation and food services (65%) and manufacturing (49%). Typically these sectors have a high proportion of workers with no NVQ level 4 (or higher) qualifications. In transport this

is 79% of the workforce. “Of particular concern to government should be industries with a high proportion of jobs that have the potential to be automated, and a high proportion of workers who are least likely to adapt, based on their skills and age profile,” the report said. IPPR has called for a £5.1bn skills levy to be created to replace the recently launched

apprenticeship levy and the introduction of a retraining allowance for workers who are laid off. The government’s industrial strategy should focus on boosting skills and productivity in sectors that face high levels of job displacement following automation. The report found a regional divide, with jobs in the North at more risk than those in the South.

S&S Distribution back in black under Palletline S&S Distribution has returned to profit helped by its warehousing division and investment by new owner Palletline. Palletline bought network member S&S Distribution and S&S Warehousing in May 2015. The deal, which was the pallet network’s first buy-out of a shareholder member, resulted in the haulier reporting a loss of £48,355 after a goodwill write-down following a review of the company’s customer base. However, in its most recent financial year, ending 30 June 2016, the haulier said investment by its owner and the contributions in turnover and profit from S&S Warehousing improved pre-tax profit to £328,191. Overall turnover rose to £8m (£6.9m), which was boosted by a seven-fold rise in turnover from the company’s warehousing division to £584,769 (£81,907).

Hermes to offer 30-minute time slots for Southwark residents and small businesses

Starship robot trial takes off By Hayley Pink

Hermes is to trial self-driving delivery robots in London. The project is an extension of a trial launched last August in Hamburg, Germany, where three robots delivered parcels in the suburbs of Ottensen, Volksdorf and Grindel. Working with robot creator Starship Technologies, Hermes will offer residents and small businesses in the London Borough of Southwark 30-minute parcel collection time slots for items being returned to retailers, or those being sent through myHermes. The parcel firm said it wants to use the UK trials to understand how the robots could fit into its range of on-demand collection and delivery options. Hermes said the self-driving delivery robots offer an alternative to drones, especially in

highly developed cities, towns and suburbs where strict aviation laws are in operation. Each vehicle is 550mm x 700mm and incorporates a secured compartment where parcels with a maximum weight of 10kg can be transported, accessible to consumers through a link generated by an app. They have six wheels, can travel up to 4mph and are used within a two-mile radius from a control centre, where the vehicles are loaded and charged. The aim is for the robots to be 99% autonomous in the future. Connected to a human operator, via the internet and

GPS, they would monitor several units at the same time. ■ This article first appeared on freightinthecity.com. Sign

Property demand expected to rise Demand for urban logistics facilities is likely to accelerate in the next few years to meet the delivery requirements of increasing urban populations. But property is often needed most in major conurbations, where it is hardest to find. Commercial property agency Cushman & Wakefield director Simon Lloyd said there is already a shortage of sites in some locations. Another problem with new development is predicting what a fast-changing market will demand. Savills director Richard Sullivan said it is vital for the property industry to remain flexible and consider new solutions, which could include small facilities in the basement of new apartment blocks. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution – who knows what the next innovation will be that will affect customer expectations,” he said. ■ See Focus, p16.

Jim Scanlan remembered Many in the logistics industry were shocked to hear of the unexpected passing of Jim Scanlan, aged 59, on Monday 10 April, writes Ali Karim, MD of the Hazchem Network. Co-founder of The Pallet Network (TPN), Jim’s passion was always transport, from his time at United Transport, pallet network Fortec and as an agency driver. My memories of Jim (pictured right with myself) are of the time we spent co-founding Hazchem Network, with HW Coates, Deltion Software, a consortium of hauliers (and Palletline) and the team we assembled in Rugby. I recall sitting at my desk at Interoute Transport in Thame just after the millennium and became interested in the pallet network model. We had sent out press releases indicating Interoute Transport Services was planning to establish the

UK’s first specialist pallet network for the road haulage of palletised dangerous goods under ever-tightening ADR regulations. We received interest from the industry, and then I got a call that went like this. “Is that Ali Karim? to which I replied, “Yes, and who’s this? “I’m Jim Scanlan, and I have the same idea as you. And so started our partnership – one that changed the direction of my life.

We held many meetings traversing the country, as well as on the continent, spending long hours in the car talking about our lives. Adam Leonard – TPN’s former chief executive – and I often compared notes as we both shared experiences of working with Jim. “Jim’s boundless enthusiasm, energy and belief gave birth to TPN. He was full of ideas and shared them with those around him, leaving the

finer details to those who shared his vision. Jim was a generous and unselfish mentor to those who had the good fortune to know him, said Leonard. The Hazchem Network started trading on 8 October 2004. I still smile with the recollection of transhipping a total of 43 pallets on that night. But rarely in life does one get the opportunity to build something from the ground up, adding benefit to the UK’s logistics infrastructure; creating something of value. Today, I thank Jim for providing me the opportunity and giving me the courage to take that first step into business. For as scary as those times were, Jim’s laughter kept me going. I recall when Jim left the business in the summer of 2005. We stood pulling heavily on our Marlboros, and stared at each other. I noticed his eyes

were blurry, as were mine. He said: “You know Ali, I am proud of many things in my life; my wife Helene and the children, the work at Fortec, setting up The Pallet Network with Richard Eldred. But the achievement I’m most proud of has been working with you and our colleagues to set up Hazchem Network because it was so hard, but so worth-

while. Then he got in his car, and drove off. Jim’s funeral will take place at 1pm on 2 May, at Slough Crematorium.

Brexit

motortransport.co.uk

FTA deputy chief executive James Hookham on Ireland’s relationship with the UK

Europe and the Emerald Isle Mention Europe to most people and they instinctively think of the continent of Europe. But Ireland is just as much a part of the EU, joining the European Community alongside the UK in 1973. Brexit has profound implications for Irish-based businesses as well as those trading or supplying the Republic from the UK. In many respects the two economies are far more entwined than any other in the EU, including the way logistics and distribution are organised. There are three big logistics issues that will require attention in the negotiations. The biggest and the most sensitive is the degree to which formal border controls are reinstated between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Effectively abolished as a result of the Good Friday peace agreement, the boundary between North and South is the only land border

between the UK and another member state of the EU. Its symbolism as an ‘external border’ of the EU is huge in the e yes of the European institutions and, on paper at least, Britain’s intended departure from the EU Customs Union would require the introduction of border and immigration controls at each of the numerous crossing points. To most businesses operating in Northern Ireland this would be damaging to their operations. Distribution patterns for operators are largely blind to the border’s existence. Likewise, many people commute between businesses in the North and homes in the South on a daily basis, and vice versa. Regardless of the politics and

the history, reinstating border controls would be disruptive to the logistics of the island and to people’s lives. Then there is the Irish Sea ferry traffic between ports in England and Scotland to Ireland. These services carried more than 850,000 trucks in 2016, up 11% on 2015. After Brexit, these journeys will be between the EU and UK customs territories and therefore subject to tariffs and other controls. Just as at Dover, none of the Irish Sea ports are configured for handling customs checks and the possibility of having to accommodate these facilities within two years is creating anxiety in the Irish business community. Not all the traffic headed across the Irish Sea from Ireland is ultimately destined

for the UK. With few alternatives available to reach the continent, the land bridge between the west coast and Dover and Folkestone is strategically vital to Irish exporters and hauliers supplying the rest of the EU. The need to avoid the double whammy of exiting EU Customs in, say Dublin, only to re-enter it again at Calais is a high-priority outcome for Irish exporters and international hauliers.

The UK’s White Paper on Brexit recognises the significance and distinctive issues involving trade with Ireland that predate the creation of the European Community in 1957 and were originally enacted in separate legislation. Politicians have stated the need to maintain open borders on several occasions and the possibility of extending the Common Travel Area to include goods was briefly mentioned by the prime minister in January but has not yet been developed in the government’s thinking. The FTA is alert to the need to include Ireland in its wider discussions with government about future trading and international haulage discussions. Working alongside our sister organisation FTA Ireland in Dublin, Westminster and Belfast, our aim will be to keep both countries trading efficiently after Brexit.

By the end of the course they will: Be able to plan and deliver LGV training for your business Be able to recall and discuss the responsibilities of an LGV instructor Be able to explain the content and objectives of the LGV driving test

Optimism returns to Avonmouth as deals up 70% South West

The South West has seen a large number of major deals over the past year, mainly focused on the Avonmouth area. At Delta Properties’ Central Park, for example, there were land sales to The Range for a 1.2 million ft2 warehouse, Lidl for 600,000ft2 and Davies Turner for 260,000ft2. GVA director Paul Hobbs said the area would benefit further from a new junction on to the M49, plans for which

were approved earlier this year. “It is a positive move and will act as a pull for Avonmouth,” he said. The Avonmouth deals contributed to a take-up of 3.2 million ft2 across the South West in 2016, according to Knight Frank’s Logic report, a rise of 70% over 2015. There has been further activity this year. Again at Central Park, DHL has acquired a site for a 160,000ft2 unit, while at Emersons Green,

north of Bristol, a 68,800ft2 delivery centre is being developed by Stoford for DPD. Other deals included CM Downton leasing 169,500ft2 from Howard Tenens at Bristol Gateway (right) in Sharpness, Gloucestershire. Giles Weir, a director of JLL in Bristol, said the demand has eaten into warehousing stock. “There are only four buildings above 100,000ft2 readily available in the South West,” he said.

SOLID!

There are, however, a number of speculative schemes taking place that will add to future supply. Mountpark and Stoford are jointly planning 400,000ft2 of development in Avonmouth, while at Horizon 38 at Filton in North Bristol 300,000ft2 of space will be completed in July. There is also land being brought forward for future development. In Exeter, the Church Commissioners of

England have submitted plans for 1.2 million ft2 at Exeter Gateway. Tim Western, a director of JLL in Exeter, said: “There is enough pent-up demand locally to account for 50% of the development.” Elsewhere, Howard Tenens has gained planning consent for a further 467,000ft2 of development at Bristol Gateway in Sharpness, while St Modwen has submitted a planning application for 1 million ft2 in Chippenham.

UK LOGISTICS TAKE-UP BY SECTOR 2016 The continued growth of online retailing is having a marked effect on the demand for warehousing, according to research from the CBRE. The company’s Property Perspective report for the second half of 2016 showed 29% of take-up of buildings more than 100,000ft2 was accounted for by online retailers, up from 18% in the first half. Food retailers increased from 5% to 9%, while other retailers dropped from 31% to 14%. The percentage taken by 3PLs fell from 22% to 16%. This came at a time when the overall take-up of logistics space reached a record high of 29.4 million ft2 for 2016.

IT’S MY PARTY: It’s not just Volvo that turns 50 in 2017. King’s Heavy Haulage MD Steve King celebrated his 50th birthday on 30 March. Thanks to all his lovely colleagues at the West Country firm (which runs some Volvos) the entire industry knows how old he is – even though he didn’t want anyone to know he was celebrating a special birthday. A belated happy birthday to you Steve.

Life is just a game for Volvo This year will go down in history as a time when many auspicious, and less than auspicious, things happened… but it also marks the 50th anniversary of Volvo Trucks in the UK. To help celebrate this milestone Volvo has a snazzy online game – one of those turn over a card and find its matching pair ones. In the interest of research Highwayman played it. It was great fun. There are several rounds: 1960s; 1970s; 1980s; 1990s; and the noughties and beyond. Using roller skates to illustrate the 1970s was inspired, and using Barack

Obama’s handsome face to illustrate “the noughties and beyond” made Highwayman weep openly like the petal he is. More importantly, if you are one of the three fastest people to complete the game you win a prize (there is an Amazon Fire Stick up for grabs). It took Highwayman one minute and 52.54 seconds to complete the game, which means he’s ranked 28 out of 143. B******s. If you want to beat Highwayman – and considering that terrible performance I bet most people can – then go to volvotrucks. co.uk/turning50.

Quality assurance always with a friendly face.”

Something for the lads on the ground Highwayman’s piece on unusual loads (MT 6 March) reminded me of when I was serving in the Royal Corps of Transport and a load we used to collect once a year, always in the spring and generally at the end of March. The items were light and small, hence the need for just an annual run to the UK to pick them up. Just some of the many things included were packets of bulling rings for the Guards battalions’ boots; left-handed spanners for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers – which reminds me of the time I called an ASM (artificer sergeant major) the ‘absolutely super mechanic’ – and bubbles for the Royal Engineers’ spirit levels. If there were Scottish regiments based in BAOR (British Army of the Rhine), tartan paint was a favourite and for the Anglian regiments varnish for the last post. Long stands for the Royal Green Jackets always were a good seller in the Naafi (Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes), along with longer weights for the Catering Corps. New keys for the drill square were needed at our camp! And as all truck drivers will have enjoyed, packets of gruff nuts. However, as the army has just about all been returned to the UK, I expect the lads can send the young recruits to the local shop to buy these items when needed on 1 April. ■ RJF Ed’s note: If you have a story, email highwaymanMT@gmail.com. Parking fines deliver a load of grief

F Steve Hobson Editor Motor Transport

or an industry rightly obsessed with compliance, can it be right that the business plan of every urban delivery operator or field service engineer deliberately involves breaking the law? The law in question is the ban on stopping to load or unload on double yellow or red lines, bus stops and other parts of the street network. But the woeful lack of loading bays in most cities, especially London, means any driver delivering in our cities must routinely stop in illegal places. Urban delivery vehicles are designed to be no longer than a London bus – 15m – so they can fit into bus stops. A virtual loading bay that allows operators to pay for a timeslot to load and unload on restricted kerb space is to be trialled in Wandsworth, south-west London. This is a great idea but there are millions of homes and businesses in London where it is impossible to stop within a reasonable distance without risking a penalty charge notice (PCN). It wasn’t long ago that the FTA highlighted the “millionaire club” – a group of operators that had the dubious distinction of paying more than £1m a year in PCNs. While the FTA hasn’t recently repeated this study, PCNs continue to be a challenge for

operators in London and with changes to the kerbside (due to cycle superhighways, for example) finding somewhere to legally load and unload remains a big issue. The best solution was found to be working more closely with London boroughs, to find an acceptable compromise that allows operators to go about their business without being hit with an enormous bill. It was clear some local authorities had come to regard PCNs as another business tax on operators, failing to see that freight deliveries are the essential lifeblood of every city. Operators report that after a period when PCNs were falling, possibly as a result of the Olympic effect when everyone came together to deliver London 2012, they are again on the increase. A major issue, of course, is that London is split into 32 boroughs plus TfL, and each has their own approach to parking enforcement. Virtual loading bays are all very well, but operators need a more understanding approach from parking wardens. Trucks and vans are not cars – they do not stop on red routes or in bus stops to nip into the shop for a drink or a sandwich. They are doing an essential job and only break the law because of a chronic shortage of loading bays.

Are we targeting emissions or congestion? L Mike Bracey Chairman, Brewery Logistics Group

ondon mayor Sadiq Khan is pressing ahead with his plans to introduce the £10 daily T- Charge (emissions surcharge) for non-compliant vehicles entering the capital from October. This is on the strength of a report he commissioned that tells us thousands of children in a quarter of London schools are being exposed to illegal levels of air pollution that can cause lifelong health problems. Air pollution is one of the most significant challenges facing London. The emissions surcharge seeks to significantly help improve air quality in London, in particular regarding nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter, both of which have an adverse effect on human health. This is the basis for the surcharge – namely reducing the chance of death from poor air quality, an excellent decision, yet the hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. Or 55 hours out of a potential 168 in the week – less than a third. If the basis is health, why does it not operate

18 MotorTransport MTR_240417_018.indd 18

24/7, rather than drivers being able to travel with impunity during evenings and weekends and emit pollution? Residents with vehicles that do not meet the emissions standards, and are registered for the congestion charge residents’ discount, will automatically be registered for a 90% discount on the emissions surcharge too. Residents with a vehicle that does not meet the required emissions standards, but who use the congestion charge auto-pay facility, will pay £2.05 per day (£1 emission surcharge plus £1.05 congestion charge) to drive in the zone in charging hours. As the two charges have different aims, one to combat congestion and one to combat pollution, why should they be linked in discounts? The proposed restricted hours and discounts will nullify the laudable aims of the emissions surcharge.

CV Show preview

Are you ready? Every year the NEC prepares for the industry to descend, but what can we expect from this year’s CV Show?

W

ith an event as big as the CV Show it can be tricky to pick out a theme, but one thing that seems to be a focus for many exhibitors is urban delivery. With the rise of home delivery and increased awareness about inner-city pollution, it is hardly surprising that so many businesses are making it core to their offerings. Most van suppliers have opted to show electric vehicles at the show with Peugeot (5D60) launching its Partner SE L2 Electric version, as well as showing off its new Expert. Sister company CitroĂŤn (5D40) will be celebrating 70 years of its Type H van with a special anniversary model, alongside new versions of the Dispatch, Berlingo and the Berlingo Electric L2. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (4G10) has the UK debut of the E-load

Up! on its stand. It is based on its Up! passenger car, but has 990 litres of cargo space. The new Crafter will also be on its stand. LDV (5F120) is going electric with its V80, which will be alongside its G10, SUV, 4x4 pick-up and Luton. Ford (5G10 and 5G20) is hoping to sign up operators to its exciting trial project. Starting later this year, the 12-month trial of 20 plug-in hybrid Transit Customs will get under way across London. Also on its stand will be the Ford Transit and Transit Custom with automatic transmission, equipped with its EcoBlue diesel engine. The new Transit Custom and Transit Courier Sport vans will also be on show.

Not trailing behind

Trailer innovation has an urban theme this year, as well as a focus on increasing capacity and efficiency. SDC Trailers (5F101) will have a 13.6m parcel van, an urban-style 10.6m tandem axle rear-steer curtainsider and a slimline neck skeletal trailer on its stand and two rental spec curtainsiders in the outside area. Cartwright (3A90) is focusing on urban transport with its Streetwise Urban Delivery Concept trailer and a low-floor urban delivery van, while Don-Bur (5A50) is focusing on lifting deck technology with a 52-pallet wedge trailer. Transdek (3B100) is introducing its XL double-deck trailer, which will be on display alongside its wedge trailer and its V2G (vehicle to ground) double-deck lifts. Elsewhere in the trailer sector Montracon (3A63) is celebrating 40 years in the industry with a rigid bodied curtainsider, a double-deck reefer and machinery/plant carrier. Finnish manufacturer, Ekeri, (3B70) will have its ADR EX III semi-trailer on display. With an innovative approach to the safety of vulnerable road users in built-up areas, Jimmy Beam Downlights (3D40) uses downlights that illuminate the ground around the truck. The downlight side marker is fitted to the outer edge of the vehicle and provides a visible keep clear area for other road users. It is certainly worth a look for any operator using HGVs in urban areas. 24.4.17 20/04/2017 09:58:55

a choice of two wheelbases, three roof heights, three overall vehicle lengths and six GVWs. MAN is also offering the TGE with a range of diesel engines and drivetrains. The truck manufacturer will not be ignoring its heavy roots and will also be presenting its PerformanceLine Edition TGX, which is the top model in the TGX range. Iveco’s will be on its dealer’s stand Guest Truck & Van (3B65). Remember to look out for tyres as there is a huge range of tyre manufacturers and distributors on hand to answer any questions and show off their latest rubber. Hankook Tyres (5C60) will have its all-season trailer tyre SmartFlex TH31 on stand, while Giti Tire (4G20) will use the

Lighting suppliers are sure to grab your attention with the likes of Maypole (4D41) showing off its hamburger-style and outline LED markers, Ecco Safety Group (4F40) introducing linear driving lamps and Labcraft (3H37) unveiling its manoeuvring light.

The big boys

Last year all the major truck manufacturers were missing from the CV Show but when the doors to this year’s event open MAN, Daf and Iveco will be there. Daf (5C81) is focusing on its Transport Efficiency philosophy, which aims to reduce operating costs and make product enhancements, such as Silent Mode and Predictive Cruise Control. While known for its heavy heritage, MAN (5F10) is using the event to introduce the TGE – its first LCV – into the UK. The TGE will be available as a panel and combi van and comes with 24.4.17 MTR_240417_020-023.indd 23

show to unveil its own branded truck and bus portfolio, which includes 20 tread patterns. Continental (5G110) is focusing on operational solutions, such as its Conti Pressure Check and ContiYard Reader tyre pressure monitoring systems.

Technology and safety

Goodyear (5C100) will highlight its Proactive Solutions business, which offers a suite of vehicle-to-fleet operations management solutions featuring advanced telematics and predictive analytics. Vehicle and driver safety has been at the forefront of many operator’s minds this year, and cameras have become a key part, as well as providing valuable data in the case of an accident. Thinkware (4J86) will be showing its F800 Air Dash Cam, which is the first in its range to include internet of things technology and an emergency alert system that connects to emergency contacts in an accident. Elsewhere, Smart Witness’s (4G80) KP2 dashcam offers Bluetooth, 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity and is available with up to 16 cameras. Technology is also infiltrating other areas of the industry,

Interview: Bandvulc

motortransport.co.uk

A firm tread The purchase of Bandvulc by Continental last year makes perfect sense and the integration process will help the two firms go from strength to strength. Steve Hobson reports

T

he acquisition of second-generation family-owned CV tyre retread specialist Bandvulc by Continental in July 2016 was a big surprise to the market, but the deal makes perfect sense. Arthur Gregg (pictured on p28), formerly Continental Tyres commercial vehicle tyre sales and marketing director and now business integration manager, tells MT that Continental first looked at Bandvulc a decade ago. “The two companies have worked together for more than 20 years. Bandvulc produces some of our ContiRe retread tyres in the UK and what we liked about the company was its targeting of fleets, professionalism and its culture and values.” While the two companies will work closely together, Continental recognises the benefits of continuing to run Bandvulc as a standalone operation, still headed by MD and former major shareholder Patrick O’Connell. “We didn’t buy a successful company to change it,” says Gregg. “It is part of Continental Group Holdings within the UK, but we are keen to make sure we keep that strong independent brand and the entrepreneurial spirit.” The Bandvulc factory and rubber mixing plant will remain in far-flung Ivybridge in Devon – where it was founded by the O’Connell family to supply tyres to the tipper fleet building the A38 trunk road. This is despite the fact Continental opened its own retread factory in Stoecken, Germany in 2013.

Retreading expertise

“On the manufacturing side, Bandvulc has more than 40 years’ experience of retreading,” says Gregg. “The factory in Ivybridge is bigger than Stoecken. We will exchange the casing and retreading expertise between the two factories to mutual benefit. The retread manufacturing and the rubber compound development and mixing will stay in the UK and stay part of Bandvulc and will not be absorbed into Continental.” Another string to Bandvulc’s bow that attracted the world’s fourth-largest tyre maker is its innovative use of IT. “One of the things we liked about the business was the entrepreneurial spirit and the innovation,” Gregg says. “The management team are always looking for ways to do things as efficiently as possible and we were impressed with the technology they were using. “Bandvulc’s fleet management system Galahad is market-leading. We are currently upgrading our system Cesar, which is due to be rolled out towards the end of this year, so we will ensure some of the key features of Galahad are integrated into our new system. We will ultimately move to one fleet manage24.4.17 MTR_240417_027-028.indd 27

ment system, but not before 2018 or 2019.” One of Bandvulc’s latest innovations is an app for its network of 50 tyre service providers, that enables the emergency contact centre to monitor how far the breakdown van is from the customer. “The aim is to take tyre service provision into the 21st century, because to be frank it is a bit old fashioned,” says Bandvulc group commercial director Philip West. “We have all this modern technology, but it comes down to a man in a van ringing in to say where he is. So we are doing something unique in the industry. “When the tyre service provider accepts a

job from us on this new portal they give us the registration number of the van and we can track the driver. In phase two we have almost 20 tyre service providers using it – they accept the job online without even a phone call, so we are saving time on admin allocating the job.” Bandvulc has invested heavily in its aftersales service operation BVPlus, which has been key to building an impressive portfolio of major fleet customers. Some 70% of UK groceries are delivered on Bandvulc tyres. “In the UK, BVPlus is a much bigger operation than Conti360°, so we made the very difficult decision to combine the two fleet operations offices in Ivybridge,” says ➜ 28 MotorTransport 27 20/04/2017 10:03:46

Interview: Bandvulc Gregg. “Therefore, the Conti360° office will be transferred to Ivybridge in two stages – the front end, which takes all the service calls, moved in January and the back office will move by the end of 2017. There are natural synergies and it makes sense to have the two offices combined.”

Relocation

Casing inspection has also already been relocated from Rugby to Ivybridge, as Bandvulc clearly has more expertise in this area. Continental also sees significant opportunities to increase sales of its tyres to Bandvulc’s customer base. While Bandvulc’s offer centres on its own retread tyre for drive and trailer axles, it fits new tyres for BVPlus customers on the steer axle. Since 1 January, Bandvulc has been the exclusive UK distributor of Continental’s Uniroyal brand truck tyres. West says: “This

motortransport.co.uk

was a huge attraction for Continental. Leaving the management company aside, the fleet portfolio we and Continental have are different. There is no cross over. “BVPlus’ largest-volume new tyre was already Continental, but on some fleets it fitted competitors’ brand new tyres. So there is big opportunity to switch those competitor fitments to the Continental group brands – Continental, Uniroyal, Semperit and Barum. So our sales offer has been enhanced. “We also see an opportunity to sell Bandvulc via the Conti360° network, but that is a bit further down the road, maybe in the second quarter of 2017.” Bandvulc will continue to make retreads for other tyre companies and the range of ContiRe retreads it makes will be expanded, Gregg says. “ContiRe will continue to use first-life Continental group casings only and Bandvulc will use any premium brand casing – first or second life,” he says. “That opens up a world of opportunity for Continental because in the past when we won a new fleet, we would have to take the competitors’ casings off, sell them in the marketplace and wait for the new Continental tyres to come through. “ Now when we win a fleet, we have the opportunity to take the casings off, cleanse them through the Bandvulc product and f it Continental and ContiRe. That gives us far better use of the

casings in the marketplace.” One area where Bandvulc can benefit from Continental expertise is with its tyre pressure monitoring system ContiPressureCheck. “That is going really well,” says Gregg. “It provides real-time tyre pressure to the driver in the cab, a fleet management system or a walk-around check with a handheld device.

Checking tyre pressures

“We are bringing in a new variant of ContiPressureCheck in 2017, called ContiYardReader. Instead of being fitted to each vehicle, ContiYardReader is installed in the yard, for example at the fuelling station or maintenance area, and automatically checks tyre pressures on all the vehicles as they pass. There are lots of opportunities to link this system to the newly combined 24/7 contact centre, enabling us to manage the fleets more effectively.” According to Gregg, Bandvulc is a natural fit with Continental, and as well as the obvious opportunities to grow both businesses, he says there will be many more unforeseen benefits to come as the pair move closer together. A sign of his faith in the merger is that he is selling up and moving from Leamington Spa to Devon to be closer to Bandvulc. “It took two years to complete the deal and everything we have seen since then has confirmed that we have got a really good partnership,” says Gregg. “We are now working our way through to turn all the potential synergies into realities.” ■
