Buying Guide: AS 24 Portugal, the bridges in Denmark and Sweden, and more recently Germany. The PASSango Europilot has a GPS tracking option that allows the toll badge to work as a vehicle tracker, allowing up-to-theminute fleet visibility across Europe. You can share your position with your subcontractor and configure alerts when the vehicle is stationary but also when it enters or leaves a geographical area (geofencing). You can also access a tool that simulates your fuel and tolls cost for any trip in Europe.

REACTING TO THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS In the current climate, the transport industry remains indispensable for transporting basic resources such as food and medicines. We know that the services offered by AS 24 (such as service stations, card and toll badges) are essential to the smooth running of hauliers’ businesses, which is why we stay close to them, providing them with the same quality of service as in normal times. Our operations are available 24/7. Some of our customers send us their thanks, such as Thompson Haulage, which has managed to maintain its business in these complicated times, thanks to the support of AS 24. Despite the coronavirus crisis, we are still opening new networks of stations, adding CNG capacity and services, including FleetDiag24 and Locker24.

Buying Guide: Asset Alliance Group to contract length, as it’s very much a one-stop shop for all forms of finance and provision. Both new and second-hand vehicles are available on industry-standard contract hire, but there’s also hire purchase and rental, all of which can be customised. The firm is also well placed to advise on the packages that will best suit an operator according to its current situation, as something bespoke that does the trick is far more likely to build a long-term customer relationship than an off-the-shelf deal.

LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY

Complete solutions As operators adapt to rapid change, Asset Alliance rou understands t eir need for e ible su liers EQUIPMENT AND FINANCE SOLUTIONS Operators that have pondered their vehicle finance during the past 12 months are probably not alone. A turbulent year has caused many to pause for thought and consider whether or not their current funding arrangement fits the bill, while others may be faced with entirely different circumstances compared with just a few months ago.

MOVING GOALPOSTS With more than 10 years in the commercial vehicle funding game, Asset Alliance Group knows that things change, and that finance often has to do the same. The economic side of the CV industry can be a static world of fixed terms and immovable contracts, but the Group understands that rigidity doesn’t marry well with a permanently changing

6

environment, so the “computer says no” approach is very much off the table. Operators need adaptable suppliers now more than ever, which is why the Group is keen to tailor both new and existing finance packages to customers’ needs – however different those needs may be from a year ago. The company stresses that it is willing to renegotiate existing arrangements for operators that might find themselves in need of new vehicles before their original term is up, or those that want to hang onto them that bit longer, because they are unsure about what’s around the corner. Its flexibility is far from limited

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

Among the company’s recent projects is a £1.2m investment in a unique technology platform including an r2c Online fleet management system. The idea was to uniquely bring together leasing, rental, financial and fleet software that was able to soak up the feeds from Asset Alliance Group’s existing systems and serve them up under one straightforward umbrella platform, rendering the digital side of things faster and easier for customers. Further developments have included opening a fourth sales and rental depot in the M62 corridor in 2020 and recently recruiting additional senior sales staff. All of this, against the background of the acquisition of the business by a private bank, announced at the end of 2020, will bring a greater level of secured funding to the business.

Preventing collisions

With HGVs accounting for a disproportionate number of road deaths, technology can provide better visibility all round DIRECT VERSUS INDIRECT VISION According to recent research carried out by The European Transport Safety Council, 25% of road deaths in the EU involve a goods vehicle. Meanwhile, statistics from Transport for London have shown that HGVs are involved in more than 80% of fatalities among vulnerable road users in the city, despite making up only 4% of traffic. In addition, reports from the World Health Organization show that construction and agriculture occupations are among the highest-risk in the world, with many injuries and fatalities caused by moving vehicles or machinery. Sadly, these statistics show that there is still much to be done in preventing deaths and

injuries caused by vehicles, both on roads and in the workplace. Driver visibility is vital to maintaining road safety. What drivers can see from inside a vehicle plays a key role in directing road safety legislation, including London’s Direct Vision Standard. However, direct vision, or what drivers can see directly through their vehicles’ windows, is not enough to prevent collisions caused by blind spots. Direct vision can be limited by various factors, including dirty windows, sun glare, cab height, vehicle length, passengers obscuring glass doors (such as truck door windows) and the distance and height of a vulnerable road user in relation to the vehicle itself.

HUMAN FACTOR While driver visibility can be aided by passive systems, such as mirrors and cameras, these will still require driver input in order to spot objects or people. In the time it takes for a driver to check mirrors and react, a vehicle could have travelled as far as 10m – even at speeds as low as 5kph.

EMILY HARDY – A VEHICLE SAFETY EXPERT FROM BRIGADE ELECTRONICS UK “While passive systems, such as mirrors, have been a legal requirement for many years, mirrors alone will not solve the blind spot problem. If the driver is not looking, they will not see that something is in the immediate vicinity of their vehicle. This is why vehicle safety systems that require a driver to take immediate action through the provision of audible alerts and warning sounds are crucial to maintaining the highest road safety standards. These active systems will notify a driver instantaneously when a vehicle or object is in their blind spot, ensuring a driver can react immediately and prevent a collision.” Brigade has produced an infographic (right) demonstrating the importance of vehicle safety systems to improve driver visibility and how both passive and active systems help support and improve road safety.

Information is key Dri ers can dis ense wit anuall in uttin fill u details, thanks to Fueltek’s automated Datanozzle DATANOZZLE

Removing opportunities for human error is the holy grail for data collection, which is exactly what Fueltek’s Datanozzle is designed to do. Available on any of the fuel management specialist’s FT4000 Fuel Access Control Terminals, it is a cable-free proximity reader that removes the need for drivers to manually record information about fill-ups, which they are typically required to do with traditional key, tag, card and keypad methods. Physically, the device takes the form of a boot mounted on the nozzle – so it looks

no different to a conventional set-up. It’s manufactured from high-impact nylon, is easy to install and links to a proximity tag attached to the fuel tank. It automatically generates a reading when the

nozzle is inserted into a tank, gathering all of the vehicle’s details. The system is able to identify authorised vehicles, their operating parameters, and can link with on-board management systems or trackers to extract odometer readings. Fundamentally, the Datanozzle cuts out driver intervention and seamlessly captures information. It is guaranteed to a minimum of 100,000 read and write cycles and the company retains data for at least 10 years, which it collects via a high-security authentication and cryptographic algorithm. Data can also be fed into the company’s Tankwatch online fuel management system to produce vehicle usage reports, which can be accessed from any internet-enabled device, be it a desktop computer, tablet or smartphone. Reports can also be automated so they can be delivered at any time, 24 hours a day at a pre-determined time.

u in uide Isuzu Truck UK Every model in the range comes with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty and Isuzu Assist – the manufacturer’s breakdown service – as standard and is also backed up by its CARE customer support service. For further peace of mind, each truck in the range is also fitted with dual airbags.

VARIETY COUNTS

Weight watchers

Japanese manufacturer’s expanded light truck range offers custo ers e ibilit and future roofin ISUZU TRUCK RANGE Isuzu Truck UK has been broadening its market share in the lower-weight rigid vehicle market with a broad spectrum of cabs, wheelbases and bodies. The manufacturer’s vehicles range from 3.5 to 13.5 tonnes and its tippers and dropsides have seen especially strong demand in recent years – especially those with modified chassis at the 3.5-tonne weight limit, which negates the requirement for additional driving licences or operator licensing.

HORSES FOR COURSES The lightest truck in the range, the N35 Grafter, falls into this bracket, as it starts at a GVW of 3.5 tonnes. Available with two engine types– a 120hp 1.9-litre unit and a 150hp 3.0-litre – manual, semi-automatic or automatic transmissions and in single and twin rear wheel configurations. If you have an o-licence and need a truck with the same compact cab options as its 3.5-tonne trucks, but more payload capacity, a 5.5-tonne or 6.5-tonne truck could be just the job.

16

The next largest offering in Isuzu Truck UK’s range is the 7.5-tonne N75, which currently holds a 20-25% market share in its weight class and is the UK market leader in tippers and dropsides, refrigerated, recovery and municipal refuse bodies. One of the reasons for the N75’s popularity is its neat proportions, as the truck’s physical footprint is smaller than European manufacturers’ 7.5-tonne vehicles, making it ideal for tackling tighter spots. The larger body/payload advantages also enable operators to maximise their capacity. The same goes for the manufacturer’s larger models, the F110 (11 tonnes) and the F135 (13.5 tonnes). Like the N35 Grafter, the N75 is also available with two engine sizes – a 150hp 3.0-litre unit and a 190hp 5.2-litre – along with a manual or semi-automatic transmission, with either a day cab or a crew cab and is suitable for all body configurations.

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

While the manufacturer is known for its flexibility and breadth of customisable chassis, it also understands that operators frequently need fast access to off-the-shelf vehicles – especially in unpredictable times. That’s where its Driveaway range comes in, which comprises pre-bodied tippers, dropsides and utility trucks at 3.5 tonnes and box, curtainside, tipper and dropside vehicles are available at 7.5 tonnes. They have considerably shorter lead times than bespoke orders and make the purchasing and administration more straightforward. Crucially, all of Isuzu Truck’s vehicles are Euro-6 compliant, which also means that they can travel within London’s Low Emission Zone without penalty, saving operators up to £100 per vehicle per day in levies. This also gives customers a degree of future-proofing, as further clean air zones are poised to be introduced throughout the UK and a suite of Euro-6 vehicles is a way to ensure unimpeded compliance.

Buying Guide: Lens-Tech

Improved visibility

Fresnel lenses give drivers a distinct advantage by providing a view into their passenger-side blind spot ANTI-BLIND SPOT TRUCK LENSES Low-entry trucks and regulation retrofits have grabbed more than their share of headlines in the run-up to London’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS), but that’s not to say there aren’t other ways of improving visibility from inside the cab, some of which are extremely simple and inexpensive. Lens-Tech’s Hi Vu Fresnel lenses do just that. They stick to the truck’s passenger-side window and provide a broader downward view to highlight vulnerable road users in the blind spot alongside the passenger door. The position of the lens means drivers are effectively looking through the window when they cast their gaze across it. That means they are not seeing a reversed or inverted mirror image and can therefore process and react to potential hazards faster. Fresnel lenses – which comprise a succession of concentric rings and create a

18

short focal length – have been recognised by prominent bodies such as the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory and Transport for London as useful visual aids for heavy vehicles, while those working on the Crossrail project (before the introduction of the new DVS) had to have a Fresnel lens fitted before they could begin making construction site deliveries. The Hi Vu Fresnel lens is also easy to install and can be press-fitted to the window and held in place by “peel-back” self-adhesive.

DESIGN TWEAKS Lens-Tech offers two versions of the Hi Vu, both of which can be used in multiple vehicles. The first is made from PVC while the latest second-generation model is smaller than its predecessor, at 21cm x 12cm, and, after refinement in response to feedback from drivers, takes up very little window space. The second is the company’s premium product, which is made from acrylic and creates a sharper view through the lens,

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

as the material is more transparent. It is also stronger than PVC and has a longer lifespan. Continuing applications include contracts with Highways England, where lenses are supplied for left-hand-drive trucks arriving at UK ports to improve drivers’ vision before they embark on UK journeys, in an effort to reduce the number of accidents that can take place when such vehicles change lanes with traditionally limited visibility. Drivers are also able to obtain the lenses at the UK’s international truck stops when they pause to pay their UK road user levy. Further afield, Lens-Tech is also a contracted supplier of wide-angle lenses specifically for “peeper” windows for Daimler Trucks North America, kitting out every truck that comes off the production line.

LOW COST In addition to the operational benefits, one of the boons of Hi Vu lenses is their low cost. Prices start at £7.50 excluding VAT for the PVC lens or £6.90 for those ordering 10 or more units, while Logistics UK (FTA) members receive a starting price of £6.50. The acrylic range starts at £10 per unit excluding VAT, falls to £9.50 for orders of 10 or more and FTA members can buy them for £9.00.

Buying Guide: Lytx safety. It’s important to communicate that your drivers’ wellbeing matters. The second step is to identify certain triggers or behaviours connected to mental health so that fleet managers can be proactive. This is where video telematics can help paint a more detailed picture. If a driver is showing unusual patterns in behaviour, the manager has the option of reviewing short video clips highlighting any incidents in the past six months. This might reveal, for example, that the driver was involved in a near-collision at the hands of another road user. While the incident was flagged and discussed at the time, it may be that the incident has resulted in some lasting trauma that needs to be addressed.

TRACK RECORD

Driver support Video telematics can help spot small behavioural changes that could be a sign of stress or anxiety HELPING YOUR DRIVERS: MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING In an industry where maintaining constant focus and concentration is essential, issues such as stress, anxiety and depression can impact driver behaviour in various ways. Wellbeing for commercial drivers can mean different things. For some, it could mean getting as much rest as possible before a long journey or maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. For others, it could be making sure that shift patterns don’t

20

impact family life. While drivers will be affected in a variety of ways, one thing that’s certain is that health and wellbeing are key to staying safe on the road. At Lytx, we’re continually looking at ways to help fleets support their drivers on the issues that matter to them.

RAISING AWARENESS What can fleet managers do in order to respond and support wellbeing in their organisation? The first step is to make sure that everyone is aware of mental health as an issue that can impact driver and fleet

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

This technology can also be used to spot subtler changes in behaviour. These may not involve a particular incident but show that a driver is speeding more than they used to, glancing down at their phone more frequently, or following the vehicle in front too closely when they never used to. Comparing how they have driven before with how they are currently doing can reveal some patterns. Picking up on these smaller changes is particularly important in the context of the pandemic, where fleet managers and drivers are less likely to physically see one another. Having these insights means operators can get closer to asking the right questions and coaching sessions are a good space in which to do so. Organisations can consider setting up an infrastructure to deal with wellbeing issues. By putting a support network in place, organisations can ensure they are supporting their drivers and helping them to stay safe.

Lorry Route has devised a novel app for operators to o ti ise eet route lannin and cut costs COMPLIANT ROUTING MADE SIMPLE The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating effect on UK businesses in the past 12 months. Lorry Route’s compliant routing software has proven useful helping fleets save money by reducing unnecessary costs. With 12 years of experience routing fleets through the London Lorry Control Scheme, Lorry Route has turned its attentions to the whole of the UK. The owner-managed business provides a technological solution for the industry from within the industry. Road restrictions up and down the country leave HGV drivers vulnerable to multiple road offences and penalty charges. Road weight restrictions, Low Emission Zones (LEZs), Ultra-Low Emission Zones (ULEZs) and narrow roads can all limit HGV drivers. Bridge strikes are costing the UK economy £23m every year and tougher penalties have been imposed by the senior traffic commissioner as a result of these types of accident. Lorry Route’s mapping data stores every UK bridge height to help reduce the number of strikes by avoiding all low bridges, as each individual route is

22

tailored to accommodate vehicles’ height. Lorry Route offers affordable compliant HGV routing software using a web platform, as well as a mobile app. Users can enter HGV height, weight, width and length to generate the fastest, most efficient and green-compliant routes for all sized vehicles, helping them avoid pedestrian areas, low bridges, narrow roads, PCN fines, road closures, LEZs and ULEZs. Using several algorithms, Lorry Route takes all restrictions into consideration and applies them to the planning tool, ensuring drivers avoid all restricted areas, making journeys safer, avoiding delays and staying compliant, wherever you are heading with your HGV. Buying Guide: Mercedes-Benz

Star performers

Mercedes-Benz is eyeing growth opportunities in the truck market from a healthy UK construction sector CONSTRUCTION FLEETS According to government statistics, the construction sector is experiencing a surge in domestic building work, with work having started on double the number of new homes in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared with the third quarter. Demand for construction vehicles has also rocketed, with AMA Research forecasting that rental of plant equipment is set to grow by 11% in the next two years. Mercedes-Benz Trucks is ready to support this with its range of robust, durable and reliable construction vehicles. Trucks from its WorkReady range are available for immediate delivery in a matter of days, with competitive funding from Mercedes-Benz Finance. That includes the muscular, high-riding Mercedes-Benz Arocs, which is purposebuilt for operation on rough terrain. Rated from 18 to 41 tonnes, and available as a heavy-duty chassis or tractor unit, it’s the king of the construction sector. The Arocs can be specified with Active Brake Assist 5, Mercedes-Benz’s emergency

24

braking assistant which can bring the truck to a complete stop. Operators can also choose between the Classic Cockpit, Multimedia Cockpit, or Multimedia Cockpit, interactive. MirrorCam, which replaces rear view mirrors with cameras and screens, is fitted as standard. “Not only have our Mercedes-Benz trucks proved to be more reliable and cost effective to operate than other marques on the fleet, but they are also ahead of the rest when it comes to safety,” says Kim Smith, national sales manager at construction company Leedale. “My drivers tell me they love MirrorCam because they can see a whole lot more of what’s going on around them, particularly at the approaches to roundabouts. That tells me all I need to know about this fantastic new technology from Mercedes-Benz,” says Nigel Leach, managing director of King Concrete. Safety is the foundation of all Mercedes-Benz trucks, and the Econic is the ideal construction truck for the city. With its low-entry cab, panoramic windscreen and full-height glazed passenger door, it’s visibly safer and

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

capable of achieving the maximum 5-star Direct Vision Standard rating from Transport for London. Rated from 18 to 32 tonnes, construction operators often specify the Econic as skiploaders, hookloaders and tipper grabs. “There are no huge blind spots impeding the view from the wheel of an Econic. Drivers are also much closer to other people on the road, which means they can see so much more than is possible from a traditional, high-riding construction truck,” says Chris Forrest, fleet and plant operations manager at Eurovia Contracting. The Atego is the reliable workhorse that has been delighting construction customers for more than 20 years. Available as a 2-axle rigid chassis rated from 7.5 to 16 tonnes, the Atego works in diverse industries from scaffolding to urban contracting. With its versatility, outstanding reliability and robustness, the Atego is the quality choice in its weight category. Mercedes-Benz truck dealers also sell and support the FUSO brand in the UK, and the small but mighty Canter is well suited to construction work. Available from 3.5 to 8.55 tonnes, all variants have a strong ladder chassis and market-leading payload, and customers can equip options such as 4-wheel drive or a double crew cab, maximising efficiency. “Given some of the rough sites on which we work, its strength and durability were certainly key to the Canter’s appeal. It’s as compact and manoeuvrable as a van, and any member of our team can drive it on a car licence. Make no mistake, though, this is a proper little truck,” says Damian Stevenson, financial director at Anwen Construction.

Buying Guide: MV Commercial

A van for all reasons Burgeoning light commercial vehicle demand prompts HGV contract hire specialist to branch out NEW LCV SITE MV Commercial is best known for its presence in the HGV vehicle sector, specialising in contract hire, rental and sales of anything from box trucks to crane lorries. However, the company has recently broadened its reach to vans with the opening of a new LCV site in Scotland. Located at the Houstoun Industrial Estate in Livingston, just off junction three of the M8, the site reopened in June 2020 and is a revived MV premises – formerly its rental HQ – that had been dormant since the firm moved to its Airdrie super centre in 2018. Its resurgence is a response to the growing demand for vans, which began before the pandemic and has since only accelerated, Enquiries about vans from within the company’s existing customer base as well as new customers had become so frequent that the company decided to establish a dedicated LCV site. As a result, the Houstoun Road

26

premises now has a constantly changing stock of between 30 and 50 vehicles at any one time – typically comprising high-spec car-derived vans, short-, medium- and long-wheelbase conventional LCVs and a series of fridges, Lutons, welfare units and select HGVs – all of which are available on short-, medium- and long-term hire. Along with its office, the site includes a valet marquee and wash bay and is staffed by five full-time employees. Demand is such that the company has suggested that it may expand the premises in future – both in terms of its physical footprint and staff numbers. Services are not limited to rental, though, as vans are available on contract hire agreements and it also offers used vehicles between one and two years old for sale. The company

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

can also arrange finance for such options via its in-house MV Asset Finance arm, and prides itself on a flexible approach to vehicle supply, with tailored packages to suit every type of operator. The majority of the vans available at the new site are what MV refers to as “ready-to-go” – off-the-shelf vehicles to help businesses hit the ground running. However, the company has also begun offering bespoke vehicles – again, in response to customer enquiries about the likes of liveries, exterior styling features and functional components. It also benefits from being less than 30 miles from MV’s main Airdrie centre, which has a full range of ready-to-go trucks including specialist, crane, plant and dry freight HGVs. In addition to its sales, finance and rental operations, the van site includes large workshops, paint bays, interior fitting services, livery facilities and an on-site parts supply company. It is therefore well placed to turn around specific customer requests quickly; in many cases, the vehicles can be in and out of the Airdrie workshops and ready for service within a day. Setting up the LCV premises has also seen MV delve into vehicles beyond commercials, with the addition of camper vans for hire and for sale. Fitted with customised interiors, they are expected to be available to hire from spring this year, when – pandemic restrictions permitting – leisure customers will be able to take advantage of them for staycations.

Totalkare is su ortin ran e of liftin and testin

truckin fir s wit a ac ines for e er need

LIFTING AND TESTING EQUIPMENT Totalkare is the UK’s leading provider of lifting and testing solutions for trucks, coaches and buses, and specialises in providing workshops with equipment to suit vehicles operating in sectors such as road haulage, waste and recycling, emergency services and recovery. Among the company’s extensive range of heavy-duty workshop solutions are its mobile column lifts. It launched its first example, the RG mobile column lift, in 1980, so it knows a thing or two about – literally – supporting heavy vehicles.

HEAVY-DUTY Its latest flagship model is the T8DC cable-free mobile column lift, each column of which can handle up to 7.5 tonnes. An inverted hydraulic cylinder lifting system, it can be used in configurations of four, six or eight columns – which are synchronised by a radio communication system – and can lift anything from an LCV to heavy haulage vehicles. Crucially, the T8DC has no interconnecting cables, which means it can easily be manoeuvred around workshops and significantly reduces the likelihood of health and safety issues, such as slips, trips and falls. Charging requires only a singlephase 230V power supply and it also

30

In addition to lifts, Totalkare also offers a series of brake testing products for heavy vehicles. Its in-ground brake tester is a DVSA-approved unit that can be installed as a standalone application, across an existing pit or as part of an ATF lane. It is supplied with a handheld tablet unit that communicates wirelessly with the brake tester, offering an advantage over traditional fixed displays, which can often be obscured by the vehicle being tested. Also on offer is a mobile brake tester, also DVSA-approved, the standard version of which can handle vehicles of up to 16 tonnes and works on asphalt, concrete or even on gravel, sand or dirt. An upgraded version that can test up to 20 tonnes is also available.

CONVENIENT OPERATION features adjustable forks to accommodate vehicles with wheel diameters ranging from 700mm to 1,400mm. In addition to the T8DC, the company offers its cabled counterpart, the T8AC, which is an identical lift besides the method of connecting each column, and in 2019, Totalkare launched the G8AC wash bay mobile column lift for outdoor applications – the UK’s only purposebuilt wash bay column lift, which is fully galvanised with sealed bearings to provide long-term protection from water ingress. Also available are a series of fully refurbished pre-owned mobile column lifts. If fixed lifts are what your operation requires, Totalkare has a range of twoand four-post options for either light commercial or heavy-duty use. As well as its Light Commercial Four Post and Heavy Duty Y-Lift products, the Two-Post electro-hydraulic lift is ideal for popular long-wheelbase vans, minibuses, pick-up trucks or small HGVs and offers a working load of 4.5-6.5 tonnes. For larger vehicles, the company also offers a Heavy Duty Four Post lift, which can accommodate loads of 8-33 tonnes and offers platform lengths of between 7m and 18m. Fully galvanised, it can be surface- or recess-mounted, is available with drive-on or drive-through options and it can be used in external or wash bay applications.

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

Both brake testers are supplied with computer, printer, monitor, cabinet and a handheld unit that communicates wirelessly with the brake tester and enables tests to be conducted from the comfort of the driver’s seat. And, like the in-ground brake tester, the mobile version also comes with a tablet for wireless communication. The brake testers are complemented by other products in Totalkare’s portfolio including headlamp testers, smoke meters, emissions testers and vehicle inspection pits, as well as a host of ancillary items no workshop should be without – available to buy online via the company’s web shop. With nationwide field service engineers backing all these products up, Totalkare is the go-to name for commercial garage equipment in the UK.

Buying Guide: Truck Door Windows

A cab with a view

For operators needing to meet the Direct Vision Standard, Truck Door Windows offers clear benefits DVS NEAR-SIDE DOOR WINDOWS Truck Door Windows is the UK’s largest manufacturer of near-side HGV windows. The company has been working with commercial and public service vehicles for more than 40 years and its mantra – a truck door window is more than just a piece of glass – stems from extensive development of a simple but highly effective product, because simply cutting a hole in a door and replacing it with a window was not the answer to achieving an OEM-quality item. The windows are specifically designed to offer a view of where vulnerable road users often appear and help vehicles and operators comply with London’s Direct Vision Standard, which came into force on 1 March, affecting all vehicles with GVWs of 12 tonnes or more. The windows are ISO 9001:2008 certified, which means they consistently demonstrate high standards and meet regulatory requirements, and are also FORS and CLOCS approved. The glass itself is OEM quality, type-approved single glaze, bonded for

34

security and strength with an aesthetic finish that prevents condensation and eliminates dirt ingress. It’s a universal size, regardless of the vehicle, at 485mm x 235mm and is low maintenance, since there is no requirement to remove the door panel for cleaning – unlike products from other manufacturers – and there is no perishable rubber gasket or physical window mechanism to obscure the view.

EASY FIT Installing the windows does not compromise the structural integrity of the truck’s door, as it does not require any members to be cut and the glass is installed via a bonding process, which assists with retention. Installation can be carried out within 24 hours and the company has courtesy vehicles that can fill in for customers’ trucks while they are having windows fitted. It also

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

operates a like-for-like door exchange programme, whereby standard doors are simply swapped for new equivalents with windows. Reactive designs can be developed and fitted with four-to-five weeks and all windows are available for both left- and right-hand-drive models. All of Truck Door Windows’ products are supplied with a two-year warranty against problems with installation or defects and they add no weight to the vehicle. They are available for the majority of popular HGV makes and models in the UK, including DAF, Iveco, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Scania and Volvo, while a new lowering cab window option is available for the latest Scania models, with no mechanism obstructing the view.

GOING PLACES The company is keen to broaden its presence in Europe and is currently appealing to commercial vehicle dealers, repair centres and fleet operators on the continent to adopt its installation centres and take advantage of a product that is in demand with an excellent return on investment. The move would require minimal capital investment, come with free training and protected territories; interested parties should get in touch via the contact details below. Finally, Truck Door Windows UK headquarters is imminently due to move from its current location at the VIP Trading Estate in Greenwich Peninsula to a new site – Bridge Close on Crossways Business Park in Dartford.

Buying Guide: TruTac

A safe pair of hands TruTac proves credentials with key accreditations as new software helps maintain compliance control COMPLIANCE SOFTWARE TruTac, the UK’s leading designer and supplier of software solutions for PSV and HGV compliance control and 2020 Queens Award winner for innovation, has achieved further accreditations that demonstrate the company’s expertise and reliability in the safe and secure handling of customer data. The company recently added TruTac’s vehicle management product, TruFleet, to its compliance software system. “We have 70 trucks on the TruTac cloud-based platform,” explains senior transport manager Martin Rybka. “All relevant driver, tacho and fleet information is in one place for instant checking and referencing and of course, it’s good to know that everything remains secure at all times.” Further testament to the high standard of TruTac’s compliance products is the company’s unique attainment of earned recognition (ER) for both the HGV and PSV sectors. Awarded by the DVSA, ER is designed to help operators reach and maintain an accepted standard for drivers and vehicles across a prescribed range of key performance indicators. For its part, TruTac includes optional ER reporting as a standard feature for all customers, at no additional cost.

SUPPORTING BUSINESSES AMID PREVAILING PANDEMIC To help operators overcome the difficulties and restrictions brought about by coronavirus, TruTac’s remote downloading for vehicles and drivers, paperless digital walkaround checks and its new vehicle maintenance and workshop planning tool, TruFleet, continue to serve as default solutions to avoid transmission of the virus and maintain compliance control. To further assist in this regard, a new TruFleet feature known as ePMI (Electronic Preventative Maintenance Inspections) enables full inspections to be carried out on a tablet and automatically emailed direct from a workshop to the operator – thereby removing the need for paper-based trails. Also available from 1 February is New TruTime, an innovative and more comprehensive version of the market-proven software module of the same name. Integrated with TruTac’s existing software tools, New TruTime aims to save time and reduce operator costs, not least by calculating accurate lead in and lead out times by comparing clocked time with tachograph start and/or end times.

WEBFLEET integrates with on-board cameras, along with vehicle side sensors, helping eliminate blind spot vision and ensuring commercial vehicles operating in Greater London comply with the Direct Vision Standard. Camera integration means that in the case of more serious incidents, reports can be automatically generated complete with footage to help managers with the job of making informed assessments of why they occurred. Footage can help identify non-fault incidents to minimise insurance payouts and save on claims handling costs. In other cases, it can help signpost training for drivers to improve their performance.

KEEPING TRACK Missing assets, such as trailers and machinery, are a significant and costly issue for the haulage industry, but WEBFLEET Asset Tracking offers full visibility over their position and usage, helping ensure they remain on your radar. Designated powered assets are displayed on a clear map and users can choose to be alerted when they are being used, when they leave specified areas or when any motion is detected. Reports list current position, breach of geozones, and usage details. As well as acting as a deterrent for thieves and reducing the likelihood of improper use, the system can also alert the user when asset maintenance is required. Notifications can be set up, based on the odometer, operating time or time since the last maintenance, allowing for reduced downtime.
