accreditation helps eets to save fuel and cut CO2 e issions as well as boosting road safet FORS FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) accreditation is a proven way to improve efficiency and cut costs. FORS has over 4,750 members in the UK, with a remit to improve safety and efficiency in road transport via progressive voluntary accreditation. FORS accreditation not only helps tipper, tanker and bulk fleets reduce penalty charge notices (PCNs) and manage work related road risk, but also champions fleet wide process efficien cies, leading to tangible savings.
019 and 0 0 fuel data from 5 ilver and old audits in 0 0 shows FORS members achieved an average of 5% year-on-year improvement in mpg and a 5 reduction in C 2. FORS director John Hix says: “The
single biggest financial outlay fleets face after staffing costs is fuel. has always demanded fleets improve efficiency, not only to reduce these costs, but to cut harmful carbon emissions. “FORS Safe Urban Driving, Van mart, Truck mart and LoC T riving courses help commercial vehicle drivers understand the most efficient way to drive in urban areas, showing them how to combat engine idling to reduce fuel consumption, emissions and inefficiency. Among other efficiency re uirements, also ensures fleet managers know how to monitor fuel consumption, plan routes to minimise fuel use, and have access to fuel card services to get the most out of every drop. t is incumbent on our industry to improve air uality and lower our C 2 output. gives fleets the tools they need to use fuel with utmost efficiency, driving down costs and making operations greener, states ix.

Deposits dispelled Air1 OptiSpray drives off the potentially damaging deposits that can form in low-load SCR systems AIR1/YARA Like road transport vehicles, most agricultural and construction machinery is now equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to be fully compliant with emission regulations. The SCR catalyst needs AdBlue or other urea solutions to function. Air1 OptiSpray is developed and patented by Yara – the world’s largest producer of AdBlue – specifically for agricultural applications and other instances where engines operate intermittently. OptiSpray prevents deposit formation in the SCR system. Based on a 32.5% urea solution, it conforms to the purity specifications of the ISO 22241 standard for AdBlue. Deposit formation can occur in SCR systems when engines are idling, running at low average speed, and/ or carrying out a high number of stops and starts. Agricultural and construction machinery and other low engine load applications are particularly exposed to this and deposit build-up can in turn lead
4
to blockages and even engine failure. With a low concentration (less than 0.05%) of surfactant additive, Air1 OptiSpray will help to prevent deposit build-up and therefore has no adverse effects on the SCR catalyst. This reduces maintenance costs and minimises downtime, resulting in more cost effective and efficient operations.
UNIVERSAL REDUCTION During testing in various conditions and at low exhaust temperatures, Air1 OptiSpray demonstrated a universal reduction in deposit formation, and all field test results demonstrated problem free operation. The vehicles that were tested had previously used ordinary AdBlue and had experienced SCR back-pressure alarms at unacceptable intervals. “We have a number of customers that had experienced issues with a build-up of deposits within their equipment’s SCR system before they began using OptiSpray, causing their machinery to be taken out of service and requiring costly maintenance and
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR BUYING GUIDE
downtime,” says Kristian Reeve, Air1 account manager at Yara. “Since using OptiSpray, they have all experienced reductions in deposit formation and associated issues. “Order and customer numbers are increasing each month as the OptiSpray message spreads through the farming and plant equipment communities.” Tom Barnfield of ennis Barnfield adds: “We have trialled a range of AdBlue solutions for our excavators working within a waste application and found that none compares to using OptiSpray. The nature of the environment is that the machines rarely work to their maximum capacity, so their after-treatment systems can encounter issues. OptiSpray all but eliminates this and provides a cost-effective solution.”
SINGLE SOLUTION Air1 OptiSpray is ideal for lowengine load fleets and those operating in cold conditions, but it can also be used with SCR vehicles operating with high engine loads and long distances. Operators do not need to use two separate urea solution products in mixed engine load fleets, as Air1 OptiSpray covers all their needs. Available in 1,000-litre IBCs, it can be dispensed using your dedicated AdBlue equipment. It is also available in pallets of 40 10-litre cans.

AN Richards may not be the biggest dealer, but this multi-award-winner is certainly among the best AN RICHARDS Located on the side of the A5 heading to Llangollen, the AN Richards site at Froncysyllte is easily missed unless you’re looking for the MAN branding. Behind that narrow frontage, though, is proof that you don’t need an ultramodern industrial unit to operate a multi-award-winning truck dealership. The story starts in the latter years of the 19th century, when Richards Bros ran what is now Aqueduct Garage at Trevor, selling and repairing automobiles including Minerva and other leading brands of the day. The current company began in 1962 when Arthur Neville Richards set up on his own. In 1976, he mortgaged his house to buy the current site, just across the valley. The business ticked over nicely until, in 1990/91, it became an agent for ERF, becoming a full MAN/ERF dealer in 2003/04, and moving into the current building in June 2005. In 2004, to create
6
more space, they had literally moved a mountain, as 120,000 tonnes of limestone was dug out. Today, the patriarch is AN’s son Bryn, who took over the running of the business in 1981 at the age of 24. He was joined by his brother Gary and mother Dorothy in a new partnership, Gary being the truck man and Bryn responsible for car and truck body repairs.
FAMILY CONNECTIONS Any visitors coming to see the boss for the first time will find him wearing a grey suit, but it’s a boiler suit, not a pinstripe. His wife ose runs the office and daughter Johanna Cooke is the company secretary. The family nature of the operation extends to her husband, Daniel, the welder/ fabricator, and seven
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR BUYING GUIDE
other families have more than one member in the 42-strong team. AN Richards recently became MAN’s UK Small Dealer of the Year for the eighth time and, as in the whole MAN network, truck sales are the responsibility of an embedded MAN salesperson, Chris Clee, who routinely exceeds his 45-truck target. The increasingly important van sales function is handled by Alun Jones, an AN Richards employee. Initially targeted to existing truck customers, the TGE is now selling well to small retail customers. The busy 11-bay truck workshop currently operates 12-hour days, Monday to Friday, plus Saturday mornings. The heavy recovery operation runs around the clock across the whole of north Wales, with the aid of a shiny MAN 6x4 90-tonne wrecker, two slide-backs and an ex-military Foden 6x6. Until the pandemic struck, its ATF was conducting 70 tests per week, and only limited by DVSA availability. The all-makes parts programme sees daily deliveries throughout the region. There is also a national truck rental operation comprising over 200 MAN trucks and a comprehensive MAN TGE hire fleet. And, as the company is part of the United Rental Group, it also offers all makes of light commercial vehicle. However the face of road transport changes over the rest of this century, there seems little doubt that AN Richards will be part of it.

Burning no rubber There’s no need to see money go up in smoke on poor quality tyres, say Bandvulc and Continental BANDVULC AND CONTINENTAL Bandvulc and Continental will be sharing a stand at the Tip-ex show to highlight the broad range of truck tyres from both brands, which are suitable for both on- and off-road applications and ideal for construction equipment and vehicles. Today, 50 years on from its humble beginnings retreading just 30 tyres a week purely for local use, Bandvulc has become the UK’s foremost tyre retreader, producing one premium quality retread tyre every three minutes for commercial vehicle customers across the country. Continental Tyres, currently in its 150th year of operation, is one of the largest global suppliers of the entire mobility industry, whose diverse products keep the world moving. Continental originally produced soft rubber products, rubberised fabrics and solid tyres for carriages and bicycles but a more recent addition is Continental’s off-highway tyre range, which came to
12
market a little under a century ago. The Bandvulc and Continental Group tyre lines are now fully integrated as part of Continental’s commercial vehicle offering with both brands combined in the UK-wide Conti360° Solutions, providing tyre contract management, maintenance scheduling, casing management and roadside recovery – all managed under the Conti360° Solutions umbrella. Bandvulc’s product line-up at the show will include tyres from its Gripmaster range, which includes regional on- and off-road tyres designed
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR BUYING GUIDE
for excellent handling, advanced mileage and a tough grip tread. Bandvulc’s BIG tyre range has excellent grip and sidewall protection to guard against damage, and high polymer rubber to combat punctures. These tyres feature Bandvulc’s ARMORBAND technology which creates added protection around the sidewall of the tyre to offer an extra safety barrier against curbing. Continental will also be showcasing its CrossTrac truck tyre, launched in 2018. The Conti CrossTrac tyre was developed to provide balance between on- and off-road performance. These tyres feature innovative tread designs with a state-of-the-art compound to provide balanced flexibility with outstanding durability, traction and robustness. They offer impressive chip, chunk and cut resistance for harsh off-road conditions as well as low rolling resistance, high mileage and smooth performance on paved roads.
PRESSURE MONITORING The Conti CrossTrac comes pre fitted with ContiPressureCheck tyre pressure monitoring sensors – technology which will also be demonstrated at Tip-ex. This innovative solution constantly measures temperature and air pressure from inside the tyre, displaying the data on a vehicle’s dashboard or on a web portal overseeing the entire fleet. This helps to maintain tyre quality and avoid failures, as well as lower overall driving costs. Regional sales manager Neil Davies says: “The Tip-ex show is the ideal event for Bandvulc to highlight the capabilities of our Gripmaster range for construction equipment. Sharing a stand with Continental will show attendees how our digital tyre technologies are developing to support our tyre brands, and how they help customers to accurately manage their fleet tyres despite the tough operating conditions they face.”

For the record
Brigade’s MDR and BRIDGE systems give operators critical support in the event of an incident BRIGADE ELECTRONICS There are plenty of reasons to invest in mobile recording systems, not least that a camera is more reliable than a witness and present around the clock. The focus within the transport industry often ends up on driver vision and vulnerable road users and, vital though these are, visual systems have a more passive role to play. Brigade’s Mobile Digital Recorder (MDR), for example, soaks up the footage from vehicle-mounted cameras specifically to generate evidence in the event of an incident. This is especially relevant for insurance claims in an age when staged accidents such as so-called crash-for-cash schemes remain popular. And as well as serving up a true picture of an event, video proof offers protection for wrongly accused drivers. The MDR range comprises four- and eight-channel mobile DVRs with either 1TB or 2TB capacity. Both the four- and
14
eight-channel vehicle recorders are offered with Wi-Fi and/or 4G connectivity, so their data can be accessed without physically having to go to the vehicle. Beyond the obvious convenience, this can be especially useful in the immediate wake of severe incidents when recording hardware may be seized by the police.
BRIDGING THE CLOUD In addition to its MDR hardware, Brigade has also recently launched BRIDGE – a fully managed 4G cloud service for vehicle CCTV. It is effectively a handsoff storage and management system for data captured by vehicle-mounted cameras via Wi-Fi and/or 4G, which means operators no longer have to set up and maintain their own servers, manage SIMs or handle mobile data. It also utilises machine-to-machine internet of things-connected SIM cards, which are better able to prioritise data than standard phone SIMs. There are more than a few benefits to remotely accessing data captured by
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR BUYING GUIDE
an MDR system, too, starting with the straightforward ability to play back historical footage and metadata. BRIDGE also offers live vehicle tracking and a live view of the vehicle’s cameras and metadata such as speed, G-forces and activated triggers, effectively positioning itself as a telematics service. On top of that, it includes a series of footage download capabilities, including automatically saving footage either side of an alarm being activated, as well as a geo fencing function which notifies the fleet manager when vehicles enter or exit a pre defined area. ually, it can issue optional triggers to fleet or transport managers, sending automatic email notifications in response to various events such as accidents, speeding, HDD errors and video loss. BRIDGE is available in two 4G packages – Track and View – both of which can be configured to UK operation via the EE network or Europewide with EE and roaming connectivity. Track includes access to the MDR mobile apps and desktop dashboard system, along with unlimited vehicle tracking. View adds 2GB of data, live camera access, and video download and playback. Every package also includes a technical helpline and series of online tutorials, and both the MDR and BRIDGE even help operators meet their P re uirements.

DAF will do nicely
DAF’s extensive range of construction vehicles includes both built-to-order and ready-bodied trucks DAF TRUCKS As the UK’s market-leading truck brand, DAF Trucks boasts a comprehensive range of vocational vehicles for the construction and tanker sectors, offering chassis from 7.5 tonnes GVW to 150 tonnes for heavy plant movements and everything in between, including vehicles ideally suited to tipper, mixer and skip-loader bodies. The latest addition to DAF’s extensive range of multi-axle configurations is the tonne V A x rear steer rigid. ts axle tridem rear bogie consists of a doubledrive tandem for excellent off-road traction, with a steering and lifting rearmost axle that creates gamechanging manoeuvrability for accessing restricted locations. The A can be configured to meet operators’ specific needs it is available with either the compact CF or spacious XF cab, and with engines from the 10. litre 11 70hp, 10hp or 50hp to the 1 .9 litre 1 0hp, 0hp or 5 0hp .
16
Alongside customer specific build to-order vehicles the DAF ‘Ready to Go’ programme ensures operators’ urgent needs can be fulfilled from a range of vehicles aimed at the construction, waste and tanker sectors, including tippers, hook-loaders, concrete mixers, scaffold lorries and skip-loaders. Working with leading names including HYVA, Wilcox, PPG and Bevan Group means completed vehicles are available at short notice. DAF Trucks continues to see a rise in demand for these vehicle types, as
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR BUYING GUIDE
operators upgrade to Euro-6 after the introduction of low emission zone standards in London and clean air zones elsewhere, including Bath and Birmingham – and with more to come, DAF Trucks is now seeing operators across the UK update their fleets to meet the Euro-6 emissions standard. Furthermore, the wayward trading environment of the past year has seen projects commence with little more than a moment’s notice, leaving truck operators with next to no time to equip their business with appropriate vehicles. The ‘out of the gate’ nature of DAF’s Ready to Go range means they are always the right solution for companies that find themselves in this position.
FAST FIX The Ready to Go range allows operators to meet all of these requirements immediately, as vehicles are supplied pre-bodied and ready for the task at hand, doing away with lengthy lead times. Also at the beginning of March, compliance with London’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS) requirements became mandatory for trucks above 1 tonnes GVW, meaning the majority of truck operators require an HGV Safety Permit for vehicles travelling into the capital. DAF’s approved Safe System equipment helps operators meet the requirements and can be ordered ex-factory or retrofitted at one of its 1 5 UK dealers. DAF Trucks’ right-hand-drive range of LF, CF and XF models are built in Britain at Leyland Trucks’ factory in Lancashire, which produced almost 1 ,000 vehicles in 0 0.

A clear road ahead Toll roads needn’t be a headache for those travelling across the continent with the DKV BOX EUROPE DKV EURO SERVICE The addition of Italian toll roads has made the DKV BOX EUROPE an even more appealing product for crosscontinent drivers and companies, making tolling an even more hassle- and admin-free experience. KV is the first certified provider based outside of the country to offer a European Electronic Toll Serviceenabled facility, with the box covering more than 6,500km of Italian motorways. Italy joins the vast majority of mainland Europe – 12 toll systems at present, with more to be added imminently – already covered by the DKV BOX EUROPE, a device that enables all transactions to be brought into a single invoice and reporting system and allows the driver to pass through multiple different road toll stations without stopping. The box feeds into DKV eReporting, and can be combined with the company’s fuel and

refund services, as well as being valid for obtaining VAT refunds. Using the On Board Unit (OBU), drivers can set parameters including language, number of axles, semi-trailer weight and cost centre. Some of these details are required to set the correct toll charge in countries such as Germany and Austria.
EASY SET-UP New services or tolls can be added and booked over-the-air, and the OBU lights up green to signal that it is operating on a booked toll route, or yellow if a vehicle is on a toll road that is not booked or activated for that vehicle, or is not available in that area. Individual selections can be made regarding which toll services are re uired for a specific vehicle. The system can be quickly installed by the driver by attaching the OBU to the windscreen, and is powered either through a 12V supply or permanently wired into the vehicle’s electrical system

by a workshop. As long as it doesn’t limit the driver’s field of vision, doesn’t cover devices such as airbags, and the OBU is visible from outside and not covered (to ensure it can interact with toll booths) it can be placed anywhere behind the windscreen, at which point it’s ready to go. It can also be used for vehicles transporting dangerous goods, as long as the system is permanently wired into the electronics and the batteries are removed. The cost of the box is tailored to individual companies and usage, and DKV provides over-the-air updates to the system, the most recent of which included a new low-battery warning to prevent unintentional shutdown, as well as adding the Bulgarian language, intuitive weight and axle changing for Germany, and overall performance and stability improvements. DKV Euro Service has been supporting the logistics and transport sector for more than 85 years, and offers a suite of services to smooth commercial vehicle operation throughout Europe. Its OBUs and DKV Cards are currently used by 240,000 contractual partners.

Isuzu’s 7.5-tonners are renowned for their durability and have long been admired for their impressive payload capacities, which are far superior to those of competitors and complemented by a smaller physical footprint and low chassis weight for higher axle tolerance.
28

In the line of sight Lens-Tech’s range of Fresnel lenses provides an enhanced field of view to help reduce blind spots LENS-TECH Lens-Tech’s Hi Vue Fresnel lenses are a low-cost and easily applied way of improving drivers’ vision from the cab. Such lenses simply stick to the vehicle’s nearside window, generating a broader downward view to highlight vulnerable road users in the blind spot alongside the passenger door. The position of the lenses means drivers are effectively looking through the window, rather than at a camera’s monitor feed, which allows them to process and react to hazards faster. There are two versions of the Hi Vue, both of which can be used in multiple vehicles. The first is fabricated from PVC and is now provided in a secondgeneration version that is smaller than its predecessor at 21x12cm and takes up very little window space, following refinements based on driver feedback. The second is the company’s premium product, which is made from acrylic, creates a sharper view through
30
the lens, and is stronger than PVC with a longer lifespan. In addition to its HGV lenses, the company has launched a light commercial vehicle range known as Vantage Point. These lenses are fundamentally identical to those used in heavy vehicles, but affixed in portrait rather than landscape mode on the inside of the nearside door window, to provide an extra 30 degrees of visibility outwards and backwards in the area directly behind the van’s side panelling – a known danger area.
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR BUYING GUIDE
Parcelforce fitted Vantage Point lenses to 80 vans operating out of its Solent depot in summer 2020 as part of a long-term trial, and drivers highlighted urban conditions and lane-changing as areas in which they have really helped. Lens-Tech has also become a Logistics UK Bronze Partner, allowing the product to be recognised under FTA’s Van Excellence scheme. Prices start at £7.50 excluding VAT for both truck and Vantage Point versions of the PVC lens, or £6.90 for those ordering 10 more units, while Logistics UK (previously FTA) members benefit from a starting price of £6.50. The acrylic range starts at £10 per unit excluding VAT, falling to £9.50 for orders of 10 more, while Logistics UK members can buy them for £9.00.
A-PILLAR WORKAROUND Among the firm’s other endeavours is a forthcoming device that will allow drivers to see through – i.e. around – a truck’s A-pillar. It involves mounting a Fresnel lens within a clear housing to the exterior of an HGV – for instance on the mirror fixing stem or an adjacent area – to bend the light around the obscuring front corner pillar and mirror housings, reducing what can be a significant blind spot caused by the two metal obstacles. Developed in collaboration with an ex-HGV driver turned inventor, the product remains in prototype phase, but feedback from early fleet trials has been resoundingly positive and the partners intend to bring it to market shortly.

Smarter delivery
Muldoon is launching a new system to let operators remotely manage a truck’s hydraulic functions MULDOON TRANSPORT SYSTEMS A clever new Smart Control System from Muldoon Transport Systems is about to hit the market, giving operators new levels of visibility and control over their deliveries. Muldoon has been designing and manufacturing specialist trailers and equipment for more than 45 years, and is one of the few in the industry that can complete build work from start to finish under one roof. Its new Smart Control System offers improved management of vehicles across the fleet. The system monitors and controls all hydraulic functions that were previously fully manual. Memory functions allow settings to be saved and accessed for the next delivery, making the system extremely user-friendly. Data relating to speed, conveying pressure and hydraulic pressure is recorded and can be remotely accessed at any time. This allows transport managers to closely monitor the performance of each vehicle, and easily
36
identify any problems or issues early. A full telematics system comes as part of the package that monitors vehicle location, EBS and braking history, service history and a host of other features. The key advantage of adding Muldoon’s Smart Control System is that operator habits can be monitored and assessed. The differences between operators can then be studied and the information shared across the workforce to improve driver training and make deliveries more efficient. The brand-new system will be

available for customer demos from July. Aside from blowers, Muldoon has also significantly increased production of its bulk tipper line-up, following a recent distribution agreement with Newton Trailers for the GB market. Having previously built solely to customer order, the new deal sees Muldoon building bulk volumes for stock, improving availability of the equipment which is renowned for its high level of quality and light weight, maximising payload capacities. The company has also continued to invest throughout the Covid-19 crisis, with productivity and output now at the highest level in its history. The high levels of materials held in stock have also allowed the company to continue to build while others have been hit by short-term supply problems with raw materials. A family-run business based in Northern Ireland with a further facility in Derbyshire, Muldoon works closely with its customers to design and manufacture products that will give a competitive edge. The company, which began more than 45 years ago, now has three cutting-edge manufacturing sites, with modern factories catering for new-build work and an adjoining facility dedicated to parts, repair and servicing. Muldoon also has dedicated R&D and design departments. The product line-up includes bulk blowing and vacuum vehicles, waste and recycling drawbar trailers, bulk tippers and specialised chassis, and trailers for the construction sector.

Vision enhancers Kerb view windows make vulnerable road users more visible and help trucks comply with the DVS TRUCK DOOR WINDOWS Kerb view window supplier and installer Truck Door Windows has outlined the safety and compliance benefits of its technology in increasing the visibility of vulnerable road users (VRUs) from the truck cab. Providing drivers with a wider field of view has the potential to cut the number of incidents, says the company, with direct vision through the side door being of most benefit at slow driving speeds, when there is a VRU moving alongside in a fixed position relative to the truck. Installation of kerb view windows on trucks began in Japan in the 1970s as accidents involving VRUs became a major social issue there, says the firm. Truck Door Windows’ product features a single-glaze, OEM quality, type-approved glass bonded for security and strength, which prevents condensation and eliminates dirt ingress. There is no window mechanism obstructing
46
the view, nor any requirement to remove the door panel for cleaning, the firm points out, while a two-year warranty covers installation and product defects. The company offers a 24-hour turnaround or four to five weeks for reactive designs, and operates a like for like door exchange programme. A courtesy vehicle is available for collection and delivery of back-to-back conversions. Solutions are available for both left- and right-hand-drive models.
DIRECT VISION STANDARD Keith Banks, business development manager at Truck Door Windows, says: “We are seeing a steady stream of business from companies which are or will be operating within the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) area, which is very similar to the current Low Emission Zone (LEZ). We are seeing growing demand from the ever-safety-conscious construction sector too, with DVS door windows recommended by both FORS and CLOCS and being regulation

requirements on projects such as HS2 and the Thames Tideway ‘Super Sewer’, to name but two. “When you consider that noncompliance costs £550 a day, many operators will see the benefits in upgrading their star rating and achieving the 10-year permit by purchasing our OEM standard solution,” he continues. “Our product still enables full operation of the passenger window too. If you’ve ever had to clean muck from your mirrors in a quarry, on a major construction site or at a landfill you’ll appreciate the benefit. Presently windows fitted to Mercedes-Benz trucks have the ability to retro-enhance star rating. It is hoped that in time, all manufacturers will fall into line and award our product with the same level of OEM accessory type approval that Mercedes-Benz awarded Truck Door Windows in August 2019 with its letter of no objection.” Solutions are already available for various makes and models, including the Volvo FH4, FM, FL and FE; DAF’s CF, XF and LF; the MAN TGS, TGM and TGX; Mercedes-Benz’s Arocs, Actros and Antos; Renault’s Midlum, Premium, C, K and T; Scania’s P, G, R and XT series and New Generation Scania; and the Iveco S-WAY and X-WAY.

Unsurprisingly, safety is at the heart of Volvo’s new range, with advances in the FMX including descent control and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that now work at all speeds down to 0kph. “The Adaptive Cruise Control is very popular; it makes the use of cruise control much easier – giving our drivers less to worry about and more peace of mind,” says James Hopkinson, transport manager at Longcliffe Quarries.
VERSATILE WORKHORSE
As solid as a rock
Volvo’s new FM and FMX are perfectly positioned to support the construction sector’s ongoing recovery VOLVO TRUCKS As the UK economy bounces back from the coronavirus pandemic, the construction industry looks set to be front and centre of the recovery. With house-building and civil engineering both on the rise, demand for vehicles in this sector is likely to soar. Volvo Trucks is primed and ready to take full advantage. At the fulcrum of Volvo’s overhaul of its heavy truck range and just beginning to hit the UK’s roads are the brand-new FM and FMX, two trucks with a long and rich heritage of serving construction firms and suppliers around the country. “I’ve always been a big Volvo product man. In my eyes, it’s superior to anything else on the market,” says John Singh, owner of ASB Transport, which recently added two Volvo FM 8x4 tippers to its 0 strong fleet. Volvo is confident the new model FM and FMX will only improve on these traditions. Built with the driver at heart, the trucks have been given a significant

interior overhaul. The dashboard has a completely new interface for information and communication, while the instrument display is fully digital, with an impressive high resolution 12in screen that makes it easy to navigate. And the changes don’t stop inside. The all-new FMX – Volvo’s toughest ever construction truck – offers increased front axle loads of up to 20 tonnes and a new 38-tonne bogie. It is also built on an entirely new cab platform, featuring a front section with

Tagged as the “versatile workhorse” of Volvo’s range, the new FM will also be popular among tipper and tanker operators. It has raised A-pillars that give the cab up to an extra 1cu m of space and more light than its predecessor. Larger windows and a lower doorline improve visibility, and both the FM and have now been fitted with the slimline rear-view mirrors found in the FH. The new FM sleeper cab has been upgraded with a raised bed and greater storage, while the exterior has been significantly redesigned with a new aerodynamic shape. Available in various driveline and chassis configurations, the new can be tailored to deliver higher productivity and fuel savings in any application. Both trucks can be ordered now through Volvo’s dealer network, with a variety of funding options via Volvo Financial Services.
