BOUNCING BACK: Rental, leasing and contract hire firm Dawsongroup truck and trailer has made a £50m investment in 700 trucks and 600 trailers, which will be delivered later this year. The move is in anticipation of an economic recovery in the UK, following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit. MD John Fletcher (pictured) explained: “We actually rationalised and reduced the size of our transient fleet, but it continues to be in very good shape, in terms of both numbers and quality – and ready for the recovery. Our business remains strong and, as the sector returns to some sort of normality, we’ll continue with our strategy of investing for the long term and helping customers bounce back from what have been exceptionally difficult times.”

Fowler Welch has announced an agreement to take over Evesham-based AIM Logistics for an undisclosed sum. The terms of the agreement were also undisclosed. AIM Logistics specialises in the distribution of temperaturecontrolled products to retailers across the UK. Fowler Welch, which was acquired by Culina Group from the Dart Group last June for £98m, said it had significantly strengthened its market-leading position with the acquisition and that it would provide “investment, job security and an entrepreneurial spirit, which will take the business to the next level”. Fowler Welch chief executive John Kerrigan said: “This acquisition represents an extremely positive step for Fowler Welch and is a perfect fit with the rest of our network. Establishing a geographical presence in this key producegrowing region of the UK will enable us to achieve greater synergies and add value to both our mutual and prospective customers as a result.” Added Culina Group chief executive Thomas van Mourik: “Fowler Welch and AIM Logistics are two organisations with strong reputations in the industry. This acquisition is an excellent fit, which will be great for staff and clients of both businesses.” In an interview with van Mourik in this issue (p22), he said Culina Group was “now injecting investment and funds into Fowler Welch that will make it, over the

next two years, of equal size, importance and profitability to Culina Logistics, but with a different market proposition. That’s fantastic”. Fowler Welch said it would finalise the details of the acquisition in the coming weeks. Its primary aim, it added, would be “to ensure that all current and prospective customers continue to benefit from market-leading levels of service”. Fowler Welch has also released its latest financial results, which showed that in the year ending 31 March 2020, its revenue dropped 6.6% to £166.8m. However, pre-tax profits increased by 27% to £5.5m. The directors said: “This transfer of ownership into a group with increased operational synergies further strengthens the ability of the business to meet future challenges, as well as enhancing its services and offerings to current and future customers. The directors do not currently anticipate any significant future changes in the nature of the company’s business.” During the period, the company also acquired the trade and assets of Culina Logistics’ Spalding operation and Eddie Stobart’s Lutterworth transport operation:

“In combination, these two acquisitions will support the company’s growth plans and enhance the service provided to its customers,” the statement added. The UK also entered its first lockdown during the reported period and Fowler Welch said it had “reacted quickly and effectively and put in place processes and controls, which has allowed the business to provide strong service and support to its customers, whilst protecting and supporting colleagues”.
