“Volvo has a long and enviable reputation for raising the bar when it comes to fuel consumption on Commercial Motor road tests. From the 32-ton F10 in 1978, then the 38-tonne FH12 420 in 1994, the Gothenburg team has set new benchmarks. Then, of course, last year’s FH 460 I-Save, with its turbo-compound technology to recover otherwise lost energy, broke our record for 44-tonners around the CM Scottish route. In fact, the record wasn’t just broken, it was annihilated, with an increase not far off a whole mile per gallon. The new FM, designed more for the city than the long-haul, had a different challenge. No 40-tonner had attempted the route since 2008, when the magic 9mpg remained tantalisingly out of reach. Since then the test has changed a bit, becoming tougher with higher speed limits and lower emissions, but the latest FM achieved an astounding overall figure of 10.31mpg. Another gauntlet is thrown down.”
