NEWProducts The MeLe Design Firm started out with a concept of bringing U.S. designed and manufactured automotive parts to the everyday enthusiast and professional motorist alike. As enthusiasts ourselves, we became aware of the difficulty of finding parts that fit this bill. This led us to create a grassroots based battery mounting solution that combined form and function. Fast forward to the present, we’ve teamed up with premier driving schools such as Dirt Fish Rally School, car builders like O.D.D Racing, and now Hochman Speed and Fabrication to further test and refine our products. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, existing in the realm of American manufacturing as a small company was a test in itself. As we learn how to live and work in these times we must also learn how to grow despite new challenges. We were honored to have been approached by Antigravity Batteries to help with implementing their new product lines for the ATX-20RS, ATX-30RS, and their HD counterparts. Antigravity has made a name for themselves with their quality lithium-ion battery technology. They’ve continually been leaders of innovation, and their unique to them Re-Start line is no exception. It offers incredible cranking power that punches well above its weight class. Pair that with a life span of 2-3x longer than traditional AGM batteries and you have a recipe destined for success. We have worked closely with Antigravity to develop a fully modular battery mount that 6

provides significant physical protection as well as some thermal shielding. We’ve kept the product lightweight to align with the core benefits of the battery. Our newly available rally-spec mount kits for the ATX-20 and ATX-30 sized batteries come with a limited lifetime warranty to show you just how committed we are to our products. We designed our quick access service latch to allow for easy use of the ReStart feature on your new Antigravity battery and easy removal for servicing. We value our community and that is why we strive to source all of our materials locally. By using marine grade aluminum you have the confidence that your mount can withstand extreme environments without corrosion, much like your Antigravity battery. Our proprietary base plate allows you to rivet nut your MeLe Mount vertically virtually anywhere for mounting. Its fully modular design allows you to swap the ATX 20 mount for the ATX 30 mount in case you ever need a change of capacity. Be on the lookout for these new kits in Gridlife, Global Time Attack, Formula Drift, Pikes Peak Hill Climb competition and on the Hoonigan Channel very soon.

quality result and better overall material structure compared to common hot, horizontal processes.

Everyone deserves a high-quality wheel that delivers style and performance. But not everyone needs or can afford a custom made-to-order forged wheel that was engineered for the highest levels of professional road racing. But is it possible to deliver a high-quality performance street wheel at an affordable price? After more than five years of extensive research, engineering, and testing, we believe that our brand new Flow Formed Series proves that answer is YES! The Manufacturing Process Forgeline Flow Formed Series wheels are 100% designed and engineered by Forgeline, in our Dayton, Ohio headquarters, and manufactured by our performance and quality-proven partner. Over the last five years, we’ve developed our newest series of wheels utilizing advanced flow forming techniques and processes reserved for only the highest quality wheels, in this category. We start with a tuned Tilted Gravity Cast (TGC) method; yielding an initial casting that is both stronger and lighter than common methods used by many other flow formed wheels. The barrel is then formed using the newest Cold Vertical Flow Form Technology. This maintains a steadier spin angle and consistent material temperature to deliver a higher

The F01 Wheel The resulting Flow Formed F01 wheels not only look great but are appropriately lightweight and have a street tire load rating of 1500 pounds per wheel. With decades of engineering race wheels, we’ve taken this expertise and dedicated years to developing the best out-of-the-box, high-quality performance street wheel that is both budget and time friendly. 100% Forgeline designed and 100% Forgeline engineered! Our Flow Formed F01 wheels are available in 19 and 20-inch vehicle-specific fitments for the 5th/6th generation Chevrolet Camaro, C6/C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, C8 Chevrolet Corvette, S197/S550 Ford Mustang GT, and 997/991 5-Lug Porsche 911 Carrera applications. We’ve engineered three different levels of concavity, in order to best accommodate each of these applications: shallow, medium, and deep. And available finish options include Anthracite, Liquid Silver, and Black Ice (+$200). PS Designs now available through 11 Tenths Racecraft

11 Tenths Racecraft is pleased to announce they are now a dealer for PS Designs for the UK. PSD is noted for their rigorous development and testing procedures before bringing a product to market. “We really like that about them,” stated 11 Tenth’s head honcho Randy Sparre. “Nothing is worse than having a customer all expectant waiting for a new product only for it to arrive not quite right as it was rushed into the marketplace. PSD put a lot of thought into developing a product, even to the point of evaluating is it really going to be a benefit to the end user. Only then do they go ahead with the design process when it is agreed it will be a worthwhile product not just hype to get a sale.” Presently they develop and retail parts for BMW, Honda, Renault, MINI, Lamborghini, McLaren and Porsche. Components available from them include, titanium wheel hardware, bespoke intake conversions, handling upgrades and carbon fiber aero. Their aim is to bring engineered performance upgrades to like-minded enthusiasts that outperform the competition. “We like how the people at PS Designs think,” Randy said, “The way they treat customers is very similar to how we do it. The end goal for both companies is to have satisfied customers who enjoy the products.”

OnTheGrid Pfaff Motorsports victorious in 2020 CTCC TCR championship ZACHARY VANIER WINS TCR TITLE IN ROOKIE SEASON WITH MOTUL AUDI RS3 TCR, BECOMES YOUNGEST-EVER CTCC CHAMPION VAUGHAN, ON, August 31, 2020 // Zachary Vanier saw his touring car aspirations come true on Sunday at Calabogie Motorsports Park, when he crossed the finish line in his Motul Audi RS3 TCR to become the youngest-ever Canadian Touring Car Championship title winner in his rookie season. In a weekend that saw a heavy mix of wet and dry weather conditions, the 17-year-old Sudbury, Ontario driver continued his blistering pace to close out the season with his fifthstraight pole position and race win in the condensed, six-round 2020 CTCC schedule. “This was a dream season for myself and us as a team,” Vanier said after the race. “It’s my first season with Pfaff and the CTCC series, and for us to have the success we’ve had, I think it definitely shows the level of professionalism that Pfaff has both on and off the track. We were able to be P1 in almost every session that we were on-track, so a big thank you to the team for providing the equipment and feedback throughout the year to help me develop and capture 16

the title this season.”

Needing a strong final weekend to close out the championship with double points in the final qualifying and race round, Vanier drove clinically to the front of the field in near-torrential rain in on Saturday, before closing out the title in clear weather on Sunday with his fifth-straight pole and race win in a determined display against tight competition. Vanier worked closely with coach and 2019 IMSA GTD Sprint Cup champion Zach Robichon throughout the season to make a smooth transition from open-wheel to touring car racing, something team manager Steve Bortolotti says was a development match made in heaven. “Firstly, I have to say how happy I am for Zach [Vanier] and the entire team

on their accomplishments this season,” he said. “He’s wise beyond his years and I think he has a really bright future in this sport. His maturity over the course of the season was clear. Working with Zach (Robichon), Vanier really showed a conscious effort to learn and become a stronger driver. He got his composure very quickly and executed everything asked of him – and a large part of that is

CTCC & PIRELLI Announce A 5-Year Renewal

Speaking on the team’s move to the CTCC in a revised 2020 racing calendar, Bortolotti also detailed Pfaff’s efforts to transition to a development role with a new platform: the plaid-liveried, Motul Audi RS3 TCR, owned by Canadian automotive learning and promotions company, FEL Drives.

Shannonville, December 23rd, 2020 – It is with great pleasure that we announce today the extension of the partnership that has been in place since 2017. By lengthening this business collaboration for another five (5) years, Pirelli Tire Canada will remain the official tire and presenting partner of the Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC) until the end of 2025.

“It was a bit of a departure for us running a frontwheel drive car in competition, but I’m really proud of Andrew Marangoni, Corey Whiteman, and Kyle Gallant (truck driver & mechanic) – everybody who helped take this FEL Drives car and make it into a reliable race winner and championship machine,” he said. “It’s another testament to this team and the passion each of us has to help continue to develop Canadian racing talent, just as Pfaff has done throughout our motorsports history. Despite being a season of adversity, we couldn’t be happier as a team to have had the opportunity to work with a driver like Zachary and the success we’ve had, and hopefully we can continue to have him as part of our program for many years to come.” To view the final CTCC 2020 TCR standings, please visit www.touringcar.ca. Charles Carvalho the Lucky Dog CEO replied, “We are very proud to introduce Ultraray Motorsports as our series sponsor for 2021 here in Canada. They are always stocked up in all of the things that keep us safe, cool, powered up and more! Most of you already know them and love them from previous seasons and all the help they have been to us during that time. Well now they’re back (with more cars too!) and ready for a bigger and better season both on and off track! Welcome back Jon and Jason Dunski our series would not be the same without you.”

Lucky Dog Racing Canada now powered by Ultraray Motorsports OAKVILLE, ON, 7 Jan, 2021 Ultraray Motorsports of Oakville is pleased to announce it is forming an alliance with the Lucky Dog Racing Canada endurance series and becoming their series sponsor in 2021. An excited Ultraray CEO Jon Dunski had this to say after the announcement, “We have competed in the LDRC series previously and now to forge an even closer alliance with them it is truly special for Jason and I. Considering the year we had in 2020, Charles and his team made the best of things and grabbed the opportunity with both hands. They put on great events considering the impediments in their way and that is partially what got us thinking about being part of their success. Their first ever event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park was high of the year and we look forward to racing there again this year but with the opportunity to have our friends and family present at our home track.” 22

© MotorWerks Magazine - The Ultimate Reading Experience!

At that time the 2021 schedule was announced with the series opening up with a brand new event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on April 17/18. Carvalho explained, “For the first time ever the LDRC opens the year with a weekend that is not an endurance race. Our focus for this event is to allow teams to test and tune before our big May race and with the help of HIP Motorsports, we will be putting a big emphasis on improving the race-craft of our drivers and teams. HIP will deliver this through offtrack instruction, on-track exercises, and/or lead-follow instruction. HIP Motorsports will be offering a unique training program over the winter at their new facility in Ajax, using race simulators and classroom-style instruction.

HIP and LDRC are teaming up to provide ways to develop driver skills off-track in a safe and affordable manner. We will also be providing incentives to LDRC racers to offset

FEL (Franczak Enterprises Canada Ltd.) announces their intent to launch a new GT4 / TCR racing platform for Canada in 2021.

“After meeting with many of the sportscar teams, it became apparent that there was an opportunity to take sports car racing in Canada to the next level. A racing series that offered a “value proposition” to the teams, drivers and sponsors, FEL President Chris Bye said. “With decades of experience as a driver, team owner and sponsor, I think FEL is uniquely positioned to raise the bar in Canadian Motorsports and I am looking forward to stepping up to a new challenge in my professional career within the automotive landscape. Initial conversations with teams and sponsors have been very encouraging and we are looking forward to next steps and turning our intent into reality,” Bye said. “We hope to be able to announce a new series with a schedule and details early in the new year.”

December 21, 2020 FEL is excited to announce their intent to launch a new GT4 / TCR racing platform in Canada for the 2021 season. After riding along with long-time partner Pfaff Motorsports, in their 2020 Canadian Touring Car Championship FEL has decided to look into taking their Canadian motorsport involvement to the next level. FEL has been a long-time supporter of Canadian drivers and teams for many years. Editor’s Notes on FEL Drives press release I had a chance to talk to Chris over the holiday period and was surprised at how refreshingly up front he was about this next step in his career, the guy is genuinely excited and the prospect of starting a new Sportscar series in 2021.

we can give back to racers.” “We are also investigating TV coverage so the teams and their marketing partners can really exploit their investments. With the cars basically being factory race cars a TV package would make a lot of sense to the manufacturers who sell into Canada. That old adage ‘Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday’ is still true to this day. One thing is for sure, the racing will be entertaining and it

“Nothing is set in stone yet”, Chris told me before going on, “We started discussing the prospect internally a few months ago, then I sought out people in motorsport who I trusted and asked them what they thought of the idea. All input was on the positive side and with that sorted we got down to some more concrete planning. As noted we had discussions with the teams, after all we have nothing if they are not prepared to support the series.” “We were pleased with the response from the teams,” Bye continued. “Especially after we told them our plan is to create a series that is next level, one that befits teams that are spending the sort of money it takes to purchase a factory approved race car from a single source. Both TCR and GT4 are Global series and running them definitely required the ‘Pro’ approach so we intend for the series to match and the goal is to have a prize fund so

would be a great thing for Canadians to finally get back to seeing quality racing from their own back yard.” As of this moment there are no dates, or venues set in concrete. Chris has said FEL is working hard to bring everything together so they can deliver on their promise. I’m impressed that his goal is to give back to the racers and teams, after all motorsport is one of the few sports where you pay to be the show. And as for when we will hear more, he said to expect more news in early 2021. All of us at MotorWerks Magazine awaits the news with excitement, TCR is my favorite branch of motorsport and another venue to see them in Canada works for me. FCP Euro Unveils IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Program FCP Euro Mercedes AMG-GT4 to be raced by Michael Hurczyn and Nate Vincent FCP Euro is moving its championship-winning motorsports program to the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge. FCP Euro will contest the championship in the No. 11 FCP Euro Mercedes AMG-GT4, which will be driven by Michael Hurczyn and Nate Vincent. The program’s first race will be the series’ third round of the season at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on May 14-16. In addition to operating a professional motorsports program, FCP Euro offers quality replacement car parts catering to European automotive enthusiasts focusing on DIY. FCP Euro offers parts kits that provide owners all the parts necessary to complete maintenance and repairs on their cars, a large catalog of instructional videos, and a Lifetime Replacement Guarantee on all parts, including consumables. The FCP Euro parts catalog features over 150,000 Genuine, OE, and OEM replacement parts. In 2020, FCP Euro appeared on Inc. Magazine’s annual Inc. 5000 list for the seventh time, exceeding $100M in annual revenue for the first time. 28

© MotorWerks Magazine - The Ultimate Reading Experience!

“FCP Euro has always had big aspirations as a business, on the track, and as part of the automotive community,” said Kyle Bento, Director of Marketing, FCP Euro. “Our new program with IMSA is no exception. We are excited to see the FCP Euro colors on a Mercedes AMG-GT4. It’s an incredibly capable platform for GT4, and we’re excited to continue to grow our expertise and Mercedes-Benz product catalog.” FCP Euro’s racing team, staffed almost exclusively by employees from the company’s Milford, Connecticut headquarters, who have roles within the company in addition to their work on the race programs. This includes the two race-winning drivers, Michael Hurczyn, FCP Euro’s Brand Director, and Nate Vincent, FCP Euro’s Motorsport Director. The FCP Euro motorsports program began in 2016 with a BMW raced in American Endurance Racing (AER) by Hurczyn and Vincent. FCP Euro then

built a Mercedes C300 to compete in AER, the lone Mercedes-Benz model in the season championship. The team then stepped into professional racing with a pair of Volkswagen GTI TCRs competing in SRO Motorsports TC America championship, then known as Pirelli World Challenge. The effort culminated

with capturing the 2019 SRO America TCR team and driver’s championships, with Hurczyn taking the title and Vincent finishing second. FCP Euro’s efforts also enabled Volkswagen to capture the manufacturer championship that season. “After following IMSA for most of my life, it is a dream come true to be able to compete against some of the best race car drivers in the world,” said Hurczyn. “As we have been working through the planning, it has become clear that everyone on the team will be expected to compete at a much higher level than we have ever done in the past. We have a remarkable team that has built an incredible business with proven success on and off the track. We know 2021 will be a year for learning, but people who know FCP Euro should expect nothing less than a highly competitive and organized program that intends on running up front.” “I’ve been hooked on sports car racing since I was a young kid attending the Vintage Historic Festival at Lime Rock Park with my family,” said Vincent. “It’s a big step for our FCP Euro team to jump into a series with so much potential and to a class that is as closely contested as the GS class. I have found that often the defining factors in a race car’s performance is determined by all the little things, and I think that the Mercedes AMG-GT4 is one of the best GT4 cars in the world. On a personal level, I’ve come a long way with FCP Euro – in the early 2000s, I was buying parts from their eBay store, and now, we are building an IMSA program.” FCP Euro will enjoy the continued support of several companies for their IMSA program. LIQUI MOLY enters its third year as title sponsor and will be prominently featured on the No. 11 FCP Euro Mercedes AMG-GT4, as will TRW Ultra, Corteco, Zimmermann, Nissens, and Sparco. In addition to being partners in the program, they are all companies whose products are featured and

sold in the FCP Euro catalog. Also included in the program is Hoonigan, the popular automotive media company and network of YouTube channels. FCP Euro’s first race will be the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio, May 14-16, at the MidOhio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge races are streamed live on NBC Sports Gold with Trackpass and tape-delayed on NBC Sports.

The Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) returns to Sydney Motorsport Park, October 15-16, 2021. The NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, has secured the World Time Attack Challenge Sydney from 2021 to 2025 as a major event that will reinvigorate and grow Sydney’s visitor economy on the road to recovery from the global pandemic. Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the event was a firm fan-favourite and staple on the Sydney Motorsport Park calendar. “The NSW Government invested $33 million in the world-class facility so we’re excited the World Time Attack Challenge has made Sydney Motorsport Park its home, in turn creating opportunities for the local visitor economy through visitation and media exposure. “It is expected that the event will generate more than $14.5 million in visitor expenditure for NSW over the next five years, creating confidence on our road to recovery and reinforcing the critical role of major events as outlined in the Visitor Economy Strategy 2030. “Bring on October when the rubber will hit the racetrack once again and fans will be revved up for two-days of drifting demos, stunt driving, a huge car show and of course, the main event,” Minister Ayres said. The NSW Government has also invested into permanent fixed LED lighting at Sydney Motorsport Park. This means, for the very first time, our great fans will be able to watch Time Attack racing well 30

into the evening. The World Time Attack Challenge 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic, but WTAC CEO, Ian Baker, has reassured everyone that this has not put the brakes on the operation. “Western Sydney has always been our home since our inaugural event at Oran Park in 2008,” said Baker. “As much as we will miss our international friends, the champions of our sport reside in our fair country and Sydney will always be the world’s proving ground for Time Attack racing. We’re excited to welcome back our regional and interstate friends as we organise another world-class event, right in the heart of Western Sydney.” “We hope the extra time off has allowed for our teams to further develop their cars, and we are excited to help many of our sponsors and traders capitalise on the opportunity to present full-scale inperson activations.” In accordance with local health regulations, the WTAC Sydney 2021 will be run as a COVID-safe event, with all guidelines to be adhered to. OPERATION MOTORSPORT AND CROWDSTRIKE/ DXDT / BOEHM RACING - BRINGING IN NEW BENEFICIARIES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2021 Raleigh, NC (February 25, 2021) - 2020 began with a great sense of optimism for Operation Motorsport, with CrowdStrike and DXDT Racing upping their commitment to military veterans with plans for long-term support of Operation Motorsport – a key program within motorsports that aids medically retiring service men and women and disabled veterans with their transition, offering a new sense of team, identity, and purpose. The premise is to engage ill and injured service members and veterans affected by military service, through motorsport activities and opportunities to aid in their recovery and rehabilitation. Operation Motorsport provides a chance for veterans to use their skill sets in a variety of areas including paddock operations, car and tire prep, marketing, social media and other key areas that are part of a racing program. Twelve months ago, we found ourselves in similar circumstances, the difference now is we have a full year of new world experience, a steep learning curve to activating beneficiaries in a COVID world, a real opportunity to prove that these recovery programs work and have gained the trust of our partners. We carefully embedded a pair of military veterans – Staff Sgt. Chad Failing (Ret.) and Staff Sgt. William Babineau (Ret.) – on Kevin Boehm’s No. 9 CrowdStrike/AWS/DXDT Honda Performance Development (HPD) Civic Si effort for the 2020 rounds of the Touring Car America (TCA) class. Kevin would win the 2020 Championship. Operation Motorsport focuses on those military veterans who do not get a chance to complete their service -due to service-related illnesses, injuries or wounds. These servicemen and women, sometimes quite suddenly, have their career plans and aspirations taken away. They are removed from their team, no longer fulfill their purpose within 32

the service, and ultimately lose that cherished identity. New Beneficiary Opportunities in 2021 with DXDT In 2021 we start fresh, with the experiences gained we are moving Staff Sgt. William Babineau (Ret.) up to the CrowdStrike / DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG, and adding, new to the team, Staff Sergeant Katrina Williams. Both will be assigned to fuel & tires and gaining hands-on experience as race mechanics through team mentorship. Operation Motorsport beneficiaries become part of the team in the truest sense. They travel with the crew, are provided team clothing and gear, and are heavily integrated into all at-event activities - both in the paddock and away from the track, a true sense of the word team.

“OpMo’s ability to integrate ill and injured soldiers, and disabled veterans into race teams for racing weekends can’t be replicated,” Staff Sgt. Babineau said. “The hardest thing about being ill, injured or transitioning to being a veteran is the loss of being a member of a team. OpMo gives that team membership back through its partnerships. “I have pictures, memories, and in my case a checkered flag from an OpMo weekend, and I made a few new friends during a four-day race weekend,”

he added. “For me, I felt truly useful and important again. I needed that more than I can explain. It has helped me be a better husband and father as a transition. I’m more motivated to work out, to go out and do things, and generally happier to be alive after the race weekend.” That is one experience from the many veterans whom Operation Motorsport has helped transition into new careers following their military service. Operation Motorsport is a veteran-led and operated, not-for-profit (US 501(c)(3)) that serves American & Canadian service members and veterans and was founded on the basis of three simple words: Excite, Engage and Empower. New Beneficiaries with a familiar team New to Kevin Boehm’s #9 CrowdStrike / AWS / DXDT Racing program is returning beneficiary Sgt Cody Reinecker (Ret.). Cody will be picking up where Will left off at the end of 2020 and join Kevin Boehm’s effort for the full 21 season. Joining Cody to help the effort, and get his feet wet is new OpMo beneficiary, Chief Master Sergeant (Ret.) Craig Neri. The Foundation’s goal by the second round is to add one more beneficiary to the mix in a hospitality or digital media capacity. “We’re so fortunate to have found this partnership with such a wonderful and caring group at CrowdStrike and DXDT Racing,” said Tiffany Lodder, Executive Director of Operation Motorsport. “This team is what it’s all about, introducing beneficiaries to a new team and identity, and giving them a renewed purpose. Activating in motorsports brings them back into a team environment that they have lost by leaving the military.” Operation Motorsport is one of many veteran programs that CrowdStrike supports corporately. It is active in many avenues of placing veterans in employment opportunities with the aim of helping service members integrate into private workplaces. CrowdStrike consistently enhances its strong veterans’ community through programs like Operation Motorsport and has developed its own

global employee resource group, led by executive Shawn Henry. CrowdStrike also is a proud part of American Corporate Partners (ACP), which provides CrowdStrike mentors for service members looking to transition to the private sector. In addition, CrowdStrike is a partner with HireMilitary to provide meaningful internship experiences to service members exiting the military via the DoD SkillBridge program. Motorsport Immersion, when used as a Diversionary Therapy, has the ability to provide transitioning service members with a renewed sense of team, identity, and purpose. Through mutually beneficial partnerships in the motorsports industry with organizations like SRO Motorsports America, and groups like CrowdStrike, DXDT Racing and Boehm Racing we bridge the separation and provide a new sense of identity. Operation Motorsport Board Member and Event Coordinator, Lynn Friedman, witnessed this partnership firsthand throughout the 2020 season and will continue in that capacity for the 2021 season recalling “While Operation Motorsport provided the opportunity for Will and Chad to engage in the motorsport community, it gave the motorsport community many with non-military backgrounds an opportunity to engage with our veterans firsthand, and understand many of the challenges they face. It was a win-win year for all of us.” Beneficiaries find Operation Motorsport through veterans’ advocacy agencies like the USO and the Air Force Wounded Warrior program, America’s Warrior partnership Four Star Alliance, Soldier Recovery Units, through fellow veterans, through our virtual iRacing League or by chance through social media. BMW M2 CS Racing starts in four one-make cups in 2021. The number of series in which the new entrylevel car from BMW M Motorsport – the BMW M2 CS Racing – can be seen in action continues to grow. In addition to the one-make cups within the DTM and the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS), which had already been announced, the car will also compete in the hands of private teams and drivers in one-make cups in the Benelux countries and Italy in 2021. Newly on board is RECARO Automotive as ‘Technical Partner of BMW M Motorsport M2 CS Racing’. The new BMW M2 CS Racing is already very popular, even ahead of its first complete racing season, proof being the four one-make cups in Europe in which the car will start in 2021. The BMW M2 Cup, which will hold its races within the DTM in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, and the BMW M2 CS Racing Cup NLS on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (GER), that will start into the season next Saturday, were announced some time ago. They are now joined by BMW M2 CS Racing Cup Benelux and the BMW M2 CS Racing Cup Italy. In both of these one-make cups and the BMW M2 CS Racing Cup NLS, the teams will have a choice of various performance levels for the BMW M2 CS Racing for the first time. As well as the variant with the 365-hp six-cylinder inline engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, there is also a 450-hp version for more ambitious drivers. As the new ‘Technical Partner of BMW M Motorsport M2 CS Racing’, RECARO Automotive is supplying the race seats for this more powerful car, which is used in the one-make cups. “The way the BMW M2 CS Racing has been 34

received by teams and drivers is really impressive and shows that we have really hit the spot with the development of our new entry-level motorsport model,” says Thomas Felbermair, Vice President Sales and Marketing BMW M GmbH. “As well as the BMW M2 Cup in the DTM and the three one-make cups in Benelux, Italy and within the Nürburgring Endurance Series, the car will also compete in many other race series around the world. I am particularly pleased that we have found an equally fantastic partner for this fantastic car. I would like to extend a warm welcome to RECARO as ‘Technical Partner of BMW M Motorsport M2 CS Racing’.” RECARO has been impressing automobile manufacturers and end users with pioneering vehicle seat solutions since 1906 – from the legendary sports seat and the first road-approved bucket seat, to the first advanced racing shell with longitudinal adjustment. At three locations in Germany, the USA and Japan, RECARO Automotive develops and manufactures complete seat units, which demonstrate the core areas for which the RECARO brand is known: design, ergonomics, craftmanship, lightweight design and high-class workmanship.

We lose the Queen! The Queen of the ‘Ring that is. Just recently the Internet was full of the sad new that Sabine Schmitz, the famous driver of the BMW M5 Ring Taxi had passed away. Only 51 years old she had been fighting cancer since 2017. She became famous outside of the racing world when she joined BBC’s Top Gear program. Seen above with BMW CCA’s Bill Wade at a BMW Club HPDE. The Badger Bimmers Chapter had brought her over after a group of them had gone over to drive the Ring. The venue was another great rad race circuit, Road America in 2007. Wade told us, “She was a guest instructor and was incredibly gracious, and very approachable. She loved to talk and laugh as can be seen in the photo. She was an incredible talent gone too soon.” C.R. Krieger almost mirrored Wade’s comments, “This is incredibly shocking and sad. This pic is from the time Badger Bimmers had her here at Road America about a dozen years ago and I, too, was lucky enough to meet her. She was exactly what you might expect. We did Jägermeister shots at Siebken’s (which, if I’m not mistaken, is where this photo was taken) and had dinner the next evening. What a delightful woman. What a loss to the world. I will always remember her sparkling personality, her easy laugh, and a stunning smile and those eyes framed by slightly touseled blonde waves.” R.I.P. Sabine

Blan 2020 was a weird year in motorsports. Blanchet Motorsports had finished the abbreviated Canadian Touring Car Championship season with a mid-pack finish and feeling the need for speed they decided to go endurance racing by entering the 66th running of BEMC’s 3-Hour Late Summer Trophy Race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Partnering longtime Blanchet Motorsports driver Damon Sharpe was PWC Touring Champion, Michael Di Meo who last raced with the team in 2013. Considering that was where he took his first sports car win we are excited having Michael back with us. All the good vibes the team felt going into the race came to nought when Sharpe was involved in a huge accident at that started at Turn 8 and finished at Turn 9 during Friday practice. Heavy 36

front end damage pretty well ruled the car out for the weekend but the team was more worried about Damon who required a trip to the Lakeridge Health in nearby Bowmanville. Sharpe was stabilized on arrival and the Lakeridge team liaised with one from St. Mike’s in Toronto. His injuries were pretty severe which was only to be expected considering the accident started at around 220 kph and finished at 0 kph. As they poked and prodded Damon the list of injuries grew, five broken ribs on his left side, with a wayward rib or two tearing into his left lung and collapsing it and finally a fractured T11 vertebrae. “Anyone who has broken a rib will tell you it is no fun” Sharpe said, “ I had five of them! I’m not a guy that likes Opioids to kill the pain so the first while in hospital was interesting to say the

“We have more or less been involved since the CTCC started 15 odd years ago and when we built our own cars we always were wondering whether we had we brought enough to be competitive. If we were lacking in horsepower we just had to run it harder and that tended to cause issues, so during the race weekend we tended to be focused on keeping the car running and that took time away from other more important things like car setup. “Our Audi RS3 LMS TCR has been a dream to work on and race, it is a Global platform after all and the BoP format makes us more comfortable knowing the cars are all running in the same ballpark. The

nchet Motorsports Returns in 2021 least. And I think that by refusing them I advanced my recovery quite a bit. They must have hated me there, normally someone with my injuries would be sedated and not much work for them. I actually ‘Broke Out’ of my ‘prison’ three times. I was then transferred to Newmarket which is closer to home and by the second day I was up and walking, and I mean serious walking around the hospital. Considering my injuries I recovered pretty fast and only recently have had some issues the doctor is wanting to check up on.” To say the team were down in the dumps was an understatement but on the 12th of January this year I got the chance to talk to team principal Frank Blanchet. “It was a bit disappointing to say the least” before going on, “The team was really getting the hang of this Audi RS3 LMS TCR.

cars are well developed, all the electronics have been developed to suit racing without any of the advanced driver assistance systems (nanny systems) that are pretty well seen on most road cars these days interfering.” Damon Sharpe agreed, “We never really progressed with our own cars, it was just a long slog getting them to where we were competitive but working on them the whole time. Our Blanchet Motorsports crew is just a great bunch of enthusiasts who want to go racing. “The TCR cars are perfect for a team of part-timers like us, they give us more value for the money even with the purchase price being pretty high. We get more laps for the money, we have the time to hone in and develop the car from out data and there is no more wondering if we have got the aero setup right, we just have to run what we brung. “As a driver it is an easy car to drive up to a point. Betz Pools have a slogan on the rear of the car saying ‘For A Life Time Of Fun’. It is talking about the swimming pools they build and install but when you see me climb out of the Audi after a race the smile on my face tells everyone just how much fun the Audi is to drive.” I talked to both Frank and Damon about the 2021 season and what were the plans for the team. Frank has been chasing down the TCR specific parts required to complete the rebuild. “While is has a pretty hard hit, the car stood up to it well,” he said. “We had Pfaff Autoworks look at the car and with their wealth of experience they gave us the nod that is was rebuild able and did not require a new shell. Jeff Pabst up there is a racer and his guys have have the Betz Pools Audi back looking as good as new.” When asked about a schedule the duo did what many racers are doing this year, shrugging their shoulders and with a blank look on their faces. “Obviously it all depends on what happens with Covid and how soon the government will open up the tracks,” said Sharpe. Blanchet added, “We are approaching the year as if it is a regular race season. Once Pfaff gets the car back to us, we as a team have a bunch of work to do to get the car ready. When that’s done and if the government allows track to open we are ready to go racing! We do this for fun and with the TCR Audi we have seen how rushing things like we used to is no longer required. Just a case of ‘Git ‘er done, load ‘er up and let’s hit the track” And with the recent announcement that FEL will also be running a TCR/GT4 series in Southern Ontario and Quebec the team can pick and choose what events they want to do. Blanchet elaborated, “When we first started racing with CTCC many moons ago I never really intended to race the whole season, my goal was always to run at the Molson Indy as it was called in Toronto. Running as a support series at that event was so special, it was the ‘Big Show’, it was in our backyard and a 38

great place for family, friends and sponsors to see us racing on a huge stage. They were great days back then, running in support of the Indy and the Canadian Grand Prix and Grand Am/NASCAR in Montreal. Now with two series we can choose where we race. FEL is hoping to pick up TV and create a prize fund. That sits well with me, after all these cars are not cheap to buy or run. Things have changed big time from the start of CTCC and having pay drivers like Damon on the team means that his marketing partners might dictate the direction we

Support the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act to Save Our Racecars This insanity from the EPA has been going on for to many years now. Like too many other government bodies they love to pick on the little guy and come up with rules and legislation that they then can beat their chest and say, look what we have done. This time it is ruling that street vehicles, cars, trucks, and motorcycles with VIN numbers can’t be converted into racecars. And the reason that they have jurisdictione is that the vehicle originally had a VIN and they have control over these vehicles. The EPA has announced that enforcement against high performance parts—including superchargers, tuners, and exhaust systems is a top priority and not only on road cars but road cars converted into race cars too. Just where built from the ground up race cars like those in the Trans-Am series will fit in who knows? Probably the bright spark that came up with this idea has no idea cars like that exist. While I am really upset about this, the legislation applies in the USA not Canada. But what happens in the South tends to influence laws that emerge in Canada. So down the road the fight will move North. Another reason I am upset goes back to my comment near the start of the article where I say they love to pick on the little guy, the easy target. A few years ago we had a similar fight with Big brother but ours was over the ability yo use leaded fuel in motorsport. There had been multiple 40

waivers in the past that allowed leaded fuel to be used on track but finally they said enough. The motorsport community banded together and the SEMA Action Network (yes they work in Canada too) came on board to fight the legislation and were successful. What did we find out during all that fighting? Less than 2% of the leaded fuel sold in Canada was used in motorsport. Yep, that’s right 2%. The rest was by light aircraft. For some reason they cannot change their engine components out to allow the use of unleaded fuel. So, thinking about this now, all of this toxic exhaust fumes and unburnt fuel (lead, which is heavier than air) is falling out of the sky onto the general public. How is this similar to this latest legislation that the EPA are pushing? The E stands for Environmental and the P for Protection. Their legislation for stopping race car builds does not seem to combat the big problem but instead knock a pimple off the face of North America. Because the fan base numbers that motorsport has and the number of race cars being built or road cars being tweaked for the road the EPA could probably rule that nobody could drive to any baseball game, professional or amateur and they would do more for emissions than the meagre benefits they are claiming by stopping race car builds. Not that I want to stop baseball fans enjoying themselves but this was just an example showing there are other options out there and I did not really think all that hard to come up with it. And how about the EPA going and getting after the companies fracking and causing people to turn on water taps and gas comes out of it. That and dumping of all sorts of bad things are the things I believe they should be doing, not getting involved with an industry that generates $2 billion annually. Remember most of the vehicles raced on the estimated 1,300 racetracks in the USA are in the category they want to ban. Motorsports is strongly ingrained in our culture at C17media. From our inception, we have worked closely with different motorsports organizations to satisfy their printing, livery and vehicle protection needs. When we reflect on where we’ve come from, a lot of our favorite projects involve designing and installing race liveries. There are many components that come together to create an attention grabbing livery that offers a competitive edge. This ranges from brainstorming designs that match an owner’s creative inspirations all the way down to using a variety of textures, materials and print techniques to elevate the appearance of a race car’s exterior.

Standing the test of time Reflecting on motorsports history, in its most basic form, a “livery” was as simple as black-and-white number decals which were designed as a way of identifying drivers and their cars. Over time, the exterior bodywork of a vehicle has evolved to serve as a blank canvas for race teams looking to differentiate themselves from competitors, generate

attention at events and improve brand awareness for drivers, sponsors and businesses. In essence, a well-designed livery capitalizes on the shapes and body lines of the car to generate an identity for the team and its fan base. In drawing a comparison between racing and nature, the terms camouflage, intimidation, and attraction come to mind when thinking about how an animal’s outer appearance contributes to its survival as a species. A race livery serves a similar function on the racetrack, offering aesthetic value in the form of differentiation, visibility and intimidation. These elements can be seen through one of our most iconic projects. The PFAFF Motorsports Porsche GT3 R - a car that originally began with a livery bearing shapes, patterns and sponsor colors - has progressed over the years to develop an identity around a distinct “plaid” pattern. This iconic design has created a global fan base that recreates the livery in video games and purchases collectibles bearing the branding. Looking beyond the aesthetic benefits that a livery offers, there are protective advantages as well. The vinyl film on which a livery is produced offers a thin layer of protection between bodywork and road debris. The greater number of layers that are added to a livery, especially in high contact areas such as the bumpers and fenders, the better resistance the bodywork will experience to track wear-andtear. Although vinyl wrap is not a permanent solution for eliminating damage, it helps minimize it. For the greatest appearance defence against race-inflicted damage, is often recommended that paint protection film (PPF) be applied beneath the livery due to this film’s thicker composure and self-healing

properties. The best part is that by installing PPF beneath the actual livery, designs can be changed multiple times without sacrificing the protection on the bodywork.

Finding Design Inspiration

This is a tribute to the 1970 Le Mans winninf Porsche 917K

Whether it’s motorsports icons, factory race teams or pure imagination, inspiration for a design can come from virtually anywhere. When reminiscing on legendary cars in motorsports history, the “Pink Pig” and “Salzburg” Porsche 917 race cars along with the “Gulf Racing” Ford GT 40 come to mind. These vehicles paved the way in motorsports for their respective teams and wore memorable, eye-catching graphics while doing so. It’s not a surprise that for those looking to pay homage to the trailblazers, these vehicles and their liveries serve as inspiration. For those seeking a more original and tailored design, a ground-up approach can be taken. Often, these liveries require a flexing of the creative muscles for both our in-house creative team and the customer. Finding the right elements that suit each owner’s unique tastes and circumstances can be a challenge, but digging into personal and professional preferences can be a good place to start for sources of inspiration. For example, an original livery can be imagined using business brand colors, vehicle sponsor logos, and a combination of abstract shapes or patterns that highlight features of the car.

Bringing it to Life The process of bringing a livery to life can take anywhere from days to weeks depending on the design chosen. Often, if a livery is being designed from scratch, it can take multiple renditions to achieve a satisfying result. To offer a better visualization of the finalized design, a digital mock-up is rendered onto a photo of the vehicle model so both the owner and vinyl installers can All Action, All The Time from MotorWerks Magazine

envision the final product before production and installation begins. During the installation process itself, it is not uncommon to see liveries with multiple layers. Layering introduces a hyper realistic effect that captures attention and makes the livery standout on track. During an installation where the vehicle’s bodywork undergoes a color change, a base layer of colored vinyl film is applied. This layer sets the canvas for the following design elements. To create depth, the largest design elements which can consist of various gradients, patterns or shapes are then placed atop the base layer using custom cut vinyl decals. The final piece of the puzzle involves applying sponsor decals in their respective locations. Of course, no true race livery is complete without the addition of a race number which are placed in key areas on the exterior of the vehicle – namely the hood, doors, or trunk. Once it all comes together, a winning race livery design can offer drivers and teams an extra competitive edge to achieve victory both on and off the racetrack!

From my point of view as the editor of Motorwerks Magazine I like seeing stunning liveries for a slightly different reason. They are a bit more selfish I am afraid. I tend to favor brightly colored cars with a well thought out livery and decal application because they will look good on the pages of MotorWerks Magazine. Just check out the photo of the Pfaff Porsche leading into this article. It just pops! It catches your breath and makes you go wow! That is good for Pfaff and Motul. We have just grabbed the readers attention and that can lead to brand exposure for everyone with decals on the car. The money you would spend on a livery and wrap installation pays off when the design is executed properly like it was in this case. Your investment has turned the race car from a white board into a billboard and you just have to see how many of them are located by any major highway to know they must work. Personally when we got our 2006 MINI Cooper S as a project car there was not too much

The Audi RS3 LMS TCR that Zachary Vanier drove to the CTCC Championship last year is a prime example of a well designed livery that performs well on track. The photographers love it, pretty well all the partners decals show up well and don’t meld into the background where they would be difficult to read. The FEL Motorsports owned car run by Pfaff Motorsport has inherited the “plaid” design made famous by their IMSA GTD Porsche and it quickly became a fan favorite. There is no mistaking who runs the car, the ‘plaid’ red and black just say Pfaff and the fans cottoned on to that fact very quickly. This is where a properly styled livery develops a brand awareness without all the hard work normally associated with that job. If racers take note os that fact and develop something along similar lines they would have a very good product to sell to a prospective marketing partner. Peter’s point of having a rendering that you could actually present to the potential client is spot on. Kenny Bernstein painted his whole race rig and pulled up to Budweiser to show them the possibilities. That turned into a sponsorship agreement that would last 30 years. You don’t have to go to that extreme but a proper rendering will go a long way to conveying the message.

thought put into a livery. This was for two reasons, the first being that the car would evolve and it did not make sense to come up with a design that would evolve as quickly as Cooper RSR would itself. Secondly, the magazine was in it’s younger days and we could not fund it. So it all became a bit piecemeal but still looked very presentable when we took it to the Motorama Show to go on display on our booth. We were recommended to go see MYC Graphics in Mississauga to get them to install the basics for the show, They designed and cut the yellow/black stripes that ran over the bonnet, doors and boot. What you can’t see in this photo is the subtle MOMO logo that is placed multiple time on the yellow portion of the stripes. The logos were a few shades different and looked really cool close up.

You will notice our marketing partner logos are placed along the rocker panels and are one color. There are pros and cons to doing this; you can see in the photo the logos are easily seen and read. The negative side is that the logo was developed in colors that they want to promote their company with a logo that is easily recognizable as being theirs. The problem could be that a red logo will just disappear on a red car. Using monochromatic logos is something you may have to discuss with your partners but the way I see it is my job is to give the company maximum exposure if monochromatic logos are the best way to do it, so be it. Now logo placement is also important. Don’t make the car look like a NASCAR! Sorry guys but the way the Cup cars logos are placed is silly as far as I am

concerned. Too much color splashed all over and clashing with one another which makes it so hard to see what company logo is being displayed. Pretty well all of the decals you see on Cooper RSR in the photo below has been cut on my personal Roland Stika vinyl cutter. It is a great

investment for a race team. It means no more running out to the graphics shop when you need a couple of decals cut. Companies like C17media have far more important jobs to do and cutting a couple of odd decals is not really their forte. Now I’ll let you into a little secret that I used when I was in charge of PR for a couple of World Champion drag racers. Many of our marketing partners wanted good photos with their logos prominently displayed. So I would swap decals on the prime front bumper area and get lots of photos that can then be printed and given to the marketing partner for them to put on their office wall. Hopefully this article gives you some insight into maximizing your marketing/promotional endeavors. Good luck and see you at the track.

The K-Tuned supported duo of James Houghton and Chris Boersma have also relied on C17media to design their livery and make and install their wraps. If you look at the photo of the Type R on the left of the page you can seen how the design has evolved since 2016 when another company designed the wrap. You can see how it was transformed by C17media by checking out the 2019 photo directly above this panel. Above it you can see how Boersma’s Civic almost has an inverted livery but both are instantly recognizable as the K-Tuned cars. When Houghton built his Acura TSX the livery was very similar but with more red camo applied. The camo is discrete but sticks in your mind, which is what the designers at C17media wanted it to do. One of the most important parts of a race car build is making sure you have a fuel system that will do the required job. There is nothing worse than not having enough fuel whether it is caused by too small a pump, overly restrictive filters or a poorly designed fuel tank. This article discusses the pertinent points about having a properly designed fuel system and fuel tank/cell for your particular application and the intent is to help our readers bypass any issues they may come across when it is their turn to look for a complete fuel system solution. I am fairly familiar with drag race fuel systems from certain manufacturers but over the past few years I have been watching Fuelab out of Collinsville, IL making their mark in all types of motorsport. My friends Mike Lewin, Grant Davis and Dan O’Donnell have run Fuelab systems in their Professional Awesome Time Attack EVO as has another friend, Gary Parker who runs his SVT Mustang in NMRA’s Modular Muscle class. Both teams have good words to say about the Fuelab products and because of those endorsements I’ve been talking to Josh Davis at Fuelab for a couple of years in preparation for the time we needed to put

together a gasoline/E85 fuel system for Cooper RSR. Our annual trip to the 2019 PRI show sealed the deal when I spied a fuel cell sitting on a shelf at the back of the Fuelab booth. With part of the cell tank and foam cut away you could clearly see the Fuelab H/E Series flange mount brushless screw pump sticking down into a cutaway fuel cell.

So, I grabbed Josh and asked what was up. “Just something they have been playing with over the past few weeks.” He went on, “We were sort of surprised when the assembled display unit arrived but here it is at the PRI Show. Wouldn’t that be perfect for your Cooper RSR project?” The Fuelab H/E Series pump was mounted on a SAE 6x10 bolt in plate that housed both the fuel pump and fuel fill connector. The fuel fill can either be local at the cell or remotely connected to a dry brake or fender adapter. This makes for a clean installation and with the functionality of a properly designed fuel cell it is perfect for our Cooper RSR project. have changed along the way including where we decided to source the fuel cell. In fact, the first article in this series was pretty well put to bed and was very close to being published. What transpired I am not going to talk about but putting the article on hold and the extra time I had to research the product got me thinking that maybe the article needed a severe revamp. The guys at Fuelab have been fantastic with their support and have freely and generously given their time to this project, including answering all my silly questions. So, what made me think I needed to revamp the article? It was something I found when I was researching on the Harmon Racing Cells website. Harmon, based in Covina, CA have a section on the site called Fuel Cells 101 and that got me thinking. The first line states unequivocally ‘While there are many products on the market today using the term ‘fuel cell’ this is, often times, a loose or incorrect association’. During all my researching on the World Wide Web using the term, ‘race car fuel cell’ quite a few options came up. Many of them were what I would call a fuel tank, not a fuel cell, because as far as I was aware a fuel cell always requires a bladder. It was something I remembered from the dangerous days of Formula 1 back in the Sixties and Seventies where the likes of triple F1 Champion Jackie Stewart believed he lost in the region of fifty-four fellow drivers and many of them were physically 58

unharmed, they just could not get out of the burning car in time. And just as the safety at the circuits got better so did the technology to safely contain racing fuel in a crash, minimizing the risk of a blazing inferno that previously snuffed out the lives of super talented drivers. what we were talking about. Yes, the FIA fuel cell is going to be more expensive, but it will add value to the race car as it can do double duty and run both TA and W2W. From here fuel cells can be broken down into two main categories: FIA certified and nonFIA certified. Most sanctioning bodies require a standard FIA certified fuel cell in order to compete in their series, so the first thing to do is read the rules and see what is required for you to compete there. If you are buying a car and it is advertised as having an FIA cell, try to get some proof that it is FIA legal and also not out of date. While most soft-resin bladders are built to FIA specifications (as outlined under the FIA FT3/3.5/5-1999 specifications relating to fuel safety bladders) not all fuel cells come with an FIA certification/rating, it has to have a special testing and a tamper-proof sticker adhered to the bladder itself listing the build date and expiry date Most companies, including Harmon Racing Cells, charge an additional fee that ranges from as little as $25 to nearly $100 USD to ‘certify’ a fuel cell and make it legal for use in competition. This sticker is only available through FIA approved fuel cell manufacturers and signifies that the fuel cell meets or exceeds FIA FT3-1999 standards for fuel cell bladder strength, construction, and assembly. The great thing is that this allows the safety bladder to be used in any competition worldwide in any FIA sanctioned event or any sanctioning body adhering to FIA safety standards. The idea behind this article was two-fold with the primary issue being educating racers as

to what actually is required when choosing a fuel cell. Non-certified cells may or may not be allowed for competition use, depending on the particular racing body. While most soft-resin bladders are FIA certified most hard-bladders, many such as plastic polyethylene or polypropylene tanks with an outer metallic container are not as they are not built to FIA standards. While plastic tanks are considered a fuel cell by definition, they are not an equivalent substitute in terms of strength, construction, or safety. Hard bladder cells will not perform as the FIA require in an accident when a cell is punctured. Remember a fuel cell is another safety item that needs to perform as designed what catastrophe hits, you cannot test it beforehand; re-install it and say now we are good to go. My advice is don’t scrimp, get a proper FIA certified fuel cell right from the get-go. Also remember this is not a fit it and forget it application, there are things you need to do to maintain it, so it works when required. So what made Harmon different as far as I was concerned? Years of experience has exposed the company to different types of materials for use in bladders, plates, and cans. They have been able to test and determine which are the best and that is why their products last, on average, 30-40% longer than comparable fuel cells. Harmon sells their products to almost every continent on the planet. Always learning the company has made designing fuel cells easier than ever, whether it’s a one-off or a production design. Now we have that part out of the way we can get back to the install on Cooper RSR. How big will All Action, All The Time from MotorWerks Magazine

the fuel cell be? I am not sure yet, but it will fit in the passenger side of the car where the rear seat squab used to be. The cell will be filled by a remote filler located above the passenger side quarter panel in the window area. That should allow us to properly insulate the fuel cell from the driver should fuel manage to escape. I reviewed photos on the Harmon Racing Cells Facebook page and was pleased to see that they offered an internal lip for fastening the container cover to the box section. To me that is a far nicer solution than the external flange used by so many of the other manufacturers. As we will be installing the cell from the bottom of the car, having a fuel cell with an external flange on four sides would reduce the fuel capacity quite a bit. I wanted to confirm with Jim Harmon that

replicate your mockup in aluminum with a bladder to suit” While that is a great option for many people, I use AutoCAD LT for my electrical drawings, so drawing up the fuel cell with the proper dimensions and sending Harmon a digital file will be a better solution. The next issue sees us go more in depth in designing a complete fuel system!

the cells listed on their website were not the only sizes available. “For sure.” He said, “The majority of our fuel cells are built to custom dimensions.” My intention was to build a cardboard model of the cell so I could ensure it would give me the capacity I would require as well as fit in the limited space found in a R53 MINI Cooper. The capacity would be especially important on days where we would be running Cooper RSR on E85 when fuel consumption is almost doubled. “No problem” Jim said, “We can 62

Many of the articles and comments about 2020 in this issue say the same thing; we can’t believe how the Covid 19 pandemic affected the motorsport year. Is 2021 going to be any better? I don’t really know but last weekend on 23rd and 24th of January 2021, I took the opportunity to get a motorsport fix by heading to the 3rd round of the Italian Ice Racing Championship. Called “The Ice Challenge” it is organized by BMG Motor Events and ACI Sport. Because of the Covid 19 pandemic the series is based on four single races, two in Livigno in the North-East of Italy and two in Pragelato near Turin. Pragelato means “icy meadow” and was named for the harsh climate and the fact that the ground is covered with ice for long periods, which is perfect for an ice racing venue. Usually, the final race of the series would be held in France at Serre Chevalier, which is not that far from Italian border and has a 50-year history of putting on events like the famed Andros Trophy where famous racing names like Yvan Muller and Alain Prost are multiple time Champions. With studded tires the drivers put on an excellent show sliding through the corners and ice driving techniques. With numerous crews sharing the same car, competing in different rounds, where they start 30 seconds apart. The event comprised of three individual races on each weekend, preceded by some free practice and the timed practice sessions that sets the grid for the first race. Each driver is assigned a score based on their finishing position in the race and at the end of the day the 68

sum of the three heats establishes the overall winner of the event. Although it is an Italian National Championship it is very interesting and hard-fought by racers from Switzerland, France and Ireland, with every kind of car, 4WD, 2WD, Kart-cross, Sideby-sides, Legend Cars all have a place to play. This third round of the series was guaranteed a large participation as there was two rounds of the series still to count. Seventy-three drivers showed up, there had never been so many entries before, I guess the lack of Emanuele Lagrotteria motorsport in 2020 in 4WD had everyone hungry for competition. The perfect track conditions offered a great chance for any driver in the championship hunt to really go for broke and with none of the class titles set in concrete, yet they had it all to shoot for. The competitiveness of the series was shown by the results so far with 9 different winners in the various classes so far. The series features some really interesting cars, some are rally cars, others are prototypes built purely for ice racing, such as the Opel Astra Andros Snobek or the Giannini Proto 350Gp4 driven by Sergio Durante and the Fiat Punto 4WD driven by Ivan Carmellino. In the fan favorite 4WD class Lukas Bicciato is leading with his iconic Lancia Delta Integrale, followed by the Skoda Fabia R5 driven by Corrado Pinzano. The 2WD class is leaded by Luca Fiorenti and his Renault Clio R2C ahead of Stefano Nadalini’s Opel Corsa. Lukas Bicciato the current leader of the

4WD class said, “I am impressed with this season on ice, never seen with such a high level of drivers and number of participants. Delighted with our results we have obtained so far, I leave this event very excited looking forward to the Pragelato Reverse and the last race of the championship. A big thank you goes out to my father, our team, all the sponsors who support me both on ice and in the hillclimb championship and to all the spectators and fans who always follow us” Something of a European specialty is the Kart-cross class which is very similar to the Lyfe Motorsports Sierra Car that they class as a Sport UTV. The class is super competitive with a lot of drivers close together, Christian Tiramani (Planet KartCrossK3) is leading, closely followed by Simone Firenze (Semog Bravo) and Raffalele Silvestri (Nico Racing). Tiramani the KartCross Leader had this to say, “This is the first time this type of car has run on snow and ice and the race did not go as we wanted unfortunately, unlike the first two races in Livigno, we had traction problems that we will try to solve before the last championship race. All in all, the championship is going quite well for us and we hope a good performance in the last race will bring home the championship win.” Armando Bracco had taken time away from KartCross and was back for this event, “I came back to racing after one year away from motorsport, unfortunately my own mistakes affected the final result, but my pace was still top five as in the past, that encourages me I hope to do better in the next race!”

Above: Christian Tiramani Below: Armando Bracco

Now something the North Americans can understand is the Side-by-Side class where Craig Breen leads followed by Vittorio Gonella. With Breen not showing up for this event and we are not sure if he is coming to the finale, the class championship is up for grabs. All Action, All The Time from MotorWerks Magazine

71

Simone Romagna took his rally Ford Fiesta to the 4WD win on his ice racing debut. Unfortunately he missed the first two events so a championship is not on the cards for him. He is looking to win the finale and be the only two time winner in the class. Maurizio Rossi leads in the Legend Cars category, followed by Michele Mottura. Rossi was over the moon with his win!, “Leading the brand new Legends class is quite something for me” he said. “I know I had a lot of luck at this event but with the first ever Legends Championship up for grabs at the finale, you can be assured I will be giving it everything!” I am sure our American friends will enjoy the fact that the Legends are being used for other than Oval racing but they do look a little odd sitting so high on studded tires. The competitiveness of Rachele Somaschini, the young female Lombardy rally driver, who is spokesperson for the FFC (Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation) has been putting on remarkable displays with her stunning looking Citroen C3 R5, arrived sitting 2nd in class position and 5th overall. 72

in this 3rd round. The Pragelato Reverse will be her last ice racing event of the year before returning to her rally schedule which starts on March 12th and continues to the last event in Hungary in October. Check out the article we have run on Rachele later in this issue. The last round of the series will be on 13/14 February for “Pragelato Reverse” event where racers get a curved ball thrown at them and they will tackle the track, running in the opposite direction. Watch for more coverage from the Ice Challenge in the next issue.

An interesting aspect of the series is night qualifying as can be seen in these photos. In most cases there is a substantial difference in the track surface as the temperature drop as night falls.

g n i n n u R o N ! h t a e r b f o out Rachele Somaschini was born in Milan, Italy, in 1994. The joy of her birth was tempered by a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disorder that affects the lungs and breathing. Many years ago it quite often meant newborns would rarely outlive their first year. There was a great possibility that this bright eyed little girl would not reach adulthood. But today, if you Google Rachele Somaschini you see plenty of results regarding her career in motorsports: not only she became national rally champion, but she is known as a relentless advocate of the fundraising project “Running for a Breath”, that is aimed at increasing awareness about her disease and collecting funds for the Italian Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation (Fondazione Ricerca Fibrosi Cistica). Thankfully medicine has advanced to a level where being diagnosed with CF is no longer the death sentence it used to be. with impeccable responsibility, doing all she can to maintain healthy physical conditions and yet living life to the fullest. It was thanks to her father Luca that she learnt to love speed and racing, starting with motard and motocross before moving quickly to hill climb championships and then rally driving. Being a female driver within an environment traditionally reserved for men was both a challenge and a great opportunity for Rachele, who chose to exploit all the curiosity and attention she was getting as a female driver to put Cystic Fibrosis, it’s research and it’s hunger for funds under the spotlight. Sustained by her high level performances, “Running for a Breath” has been very succesful and the impressive sum of 200.000 euros has been collected. Rachele has created a community both in her life, racing and medical struggles, she chooses her her advertising mediums carefully to finance the project and spread her cause. She loves sharing her daily challenges with Cystic Fibrosis, from the food choices to talking about her travel bags full of medications and tools for therapies, with the thousands of followers who loyally support her, thankful for their reaching out and actively participating in the most important of all races to beat, Cystic Fibrosis thanks to ongoing scientific research. 82

One on One with Rachele IR: How old are you? RS: I’m 26 IR: How long have you been in motorsport? RS: It’s been a while, my father Luca gave me a passion for engines, I always prefered cars and everything with engines. I started in motard and motocross, sat my driving license at eighteen and shortly gained a competiton license. In 2014 I debuted in the storic race “Coppa Intereuropea” at the Autodromo di Monza racetrack. 2015 saw me competing in hillclimbs. In 2016 raced at many famed Italian circuits, in the MINI Challenge. 2017 saw me win the Italian Hillclimb Championship. In February 2017, I became a driving instructor, at driving schools focusing on safe driving and motorsports courses. 2018 was a good year where I was selected for the Hankook Young Project and took part to the entire Italian Rally – CIR Championship. In 2019 I continued with the RS Team’s Citroen DS3 R3T where I won the Ladies Trophy and the R3 class in the Italian Rally Championship. In 2020 stepped up to the ERC Junior Championship with the Peugeot 208 Rally4 and also raced in 3 events of WRC: Rallye MonteCarlo, Rally Italia Sardegna and ACI Rally Monza. IR: You ice race to stay sharp through the winter?

84

© MotorWerks Magazine - The Ultimate Reading Experience!

SC: I just discovered the ice races and I find them very entertaining and educational. I’ll be back in rallies gaining more experience and I hope it is useful to achieve my goals. IR: What are the challenges of ice racing compared to rallying SC: The ice driving is very enjoyable but at the same time challenging, the gap between all the drivers are close. Ice driving allows you to become familiar with the dynamics of the cars, thanks to poor grip conditions. You learn the importance of the use of the car’s weights, and you can acquire great feelings and skills for rallying, especially on gravel rally. IR: Is it the European Rally Championship you compete in? SC: Yes, I compete in the ERC, last year, due to the Covid pandemic, I didn’t finish the program in the Junior championship but I really want to continue that beautiful experience for the future.

There wasn’t much happening with Time Attack back then but he was hooked and eventually moved from the S13 platform into a R32 GTR, continuing to run as many track days as he could attend. Age 27: Purchased the M3 with an epic 24 hr road trip back from Denver Colorado with his dad. At the time, Scott was tracking the GTR so intended to preserve the M3 as a nice, street car. Age 30: Scott participated in his first CSCS event and after running a few Time Attack events was quickly pulled in by some early success and podium finishes (keep in mind sub 1:20 at TMP was almost unheard of back then!). So what’s next for you and the M3, Scott? The next step with the M3 is not fully known at this time. The car is very reliable and a blast to drive, however Time Attack doesn’t stand still! To remain at the top, both driver and car must be consistentlyimproving. Since the car remains driven and not trailered to events, sacrificing drivability and reliability for performance is a tight rope act. There is a constant push from competitors that has helped develop the car and myself as a driver. I mostly run with CSCS and occasionally compete with the Ontario Time Attack series.

Ontario is fortunate to be able to support three Time Attack series with a variety of accessible tracks. For sure I am looking forward to returning to Calabogie this summer and I am stoked that their track is on Assetto Corsa so I can refresh my memory of its many, many turns.

I would love to see more Time Attack events at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park GP circuit (CSCS are you listening?!) and speaking of legendary tracks, when will we see time attack at Watkins Glen International? After travelling there four years straight (pre COVID) for DE days I would love to compete in an event there. It’s an amazingly fast, challenging, but fun track to drive. It’s definitely a track worthy of respect. How about one ‘away’ event being included in the series? Many series do things like that. It may even bring more Americans up to race with us. RENEWABLE FUEL TO POWER CONTINENTAL GT3 TO THE CLOUDS – BENTLEY’S 2021 PIKES PEAK RACER UNVEILED ▪ Bentley launches new sustainability initiative with a return to Pikes Peak ▪ “Continental GT3 Pikes Peak” to run on renewable fuel ▪ Modified race car to be the most dynamic Bentley ever built ▪ Bentley bids for triple crown of Pikes Peak records ▪ Targeting Time Attack 1 record, to add to Production SUV and Production Car records attained in 2018 and 2019 ▪ Former King of the Mountain Rhys Millen returns to drive for Bentley ▪ Car developed in conjunction with GT3 customer team Fastr ▪ Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to take place on 27 June 2021 (Crewe, 12 April 2021) Bentley has today launched a major new sustainability initiative, with the announcement of a renewable fuels research and development programme spearheaded by the most extreme road-car-based Bentley in its 101 year history. The Continental GT3 Pikes Peak, designed and built to compete for the Time Attack 1 record at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, will be the first competition Bentley to run on renewable fuel, ahead of a goal to offer sustainable fuels to Bentley’s customers around the world. The modified Continental GT3 racer, based on Bentley’s race- and championship-winning car, will power its way through the 12.42-mile course running on a biofuel-based gasoline. Various blends of fuels are currently being tested and evaluated, with possible Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reductions of up to 85% over standard fossil fuel. This first step marks the start of a longer programme that will investigate both biofuels and e-fuels for their potential to power the Bentleys of past and present in a sustainable way. To break the record, the car will have to complete the nearly 5,000 ft climb, which includes 156 corners, at 102

an average speed of more than 78 mph to cross the finish line in less than nine minutes and 36 seconds. To help achieve this ambitious target, Bentley has once again turned to three-time Pikes Peak champion and former “King of the Mountain’ Rhys Millen (NZ) – who holds individual class

records. It was with Millen that Bentley captured its two existing Pikes Peak records – the Production SUV record attained in 2018 with a Bentayga W12, and the outright Production Car record scored in 2019 with a Continental GT. The Continental GT3 Pikes Peak now enters

a major test and development phase, based initially in the UK before being shipped to the USA for altitude testing. Things have changed a lot in the photography world since the first consumer digital single lens reflex cameras become popular in the late nineties. The advantages of not changing film rolls and not having to develop the film was great for the everyday Joe but for some reason it took the Pro photographer a lot longer to embrace the technology. The reason? Quite simply at the start of the digital revolution the digital SLR had not evolved to where it could provide a better image for the customer. Now when the cameras did get to that point, it was off to the races and not just for motorsport shooters. As the technology advanced rapidly new cameras were popping up like the flowers in the spring. Pro shooters had a tough choice to make; in most cases it would be Canon or Nikon. Photographers are very brand loyal, but this new digital era brought new challenges and choices. Depending on what brand you were shooting

to is it anyway?

with, one or other may give you a better image and to Pro shooters that is paramount. Cameras with small sensors provided images with a lot of noise. The sensors came in various sizes which was called crop factor. A full frame body would have a crop factor of 1.0 which would make it the same as a 35mm but crop factors like 1.3 and 1.6 would mean lenses to that body would actually be multiplied by the crop number, making a 300mm lens 480mm on a 1.6 body. Some lifelong Canon shooters went in headfirst and changed to Nikon just because of the online ratings of a particular camera body. But the buying cycle did not stop there. Some of the previous lenses did not fit the new DSLR bodies. And if you were changing brands they definitely did not fit. For the Pro shooter or advanced amateur going digital would be a major expense. Which brings us to why I’m writing this article. I personally have been shooting motorsport

from the mid-seventies featuring hillclimbs, circuit racing and autocross (the UK version). I could not afford a name brand like Canon or Nikon so made do with a Russian made Zenit-E SLR before upgrading to an East German built Praktica. Back then those who sold photos took orders for prints and before sending them out branded them with an ink stamp on the back that stated their ownership and in most cases that the copyright stayed with the photographer. So now with digital cameras to the fore and every amateur believing they are the next Jeff Bloxham or Camden Thrasher. Add in how easy it is to share your work with other over social media on the Internet and all motorsport fans get a great insight into what in going on at a particular race event. That’s good isn’t it? Well yes and no. Firstly, many amateurs will load every shot they take into their galleries. What’s bad about that? Well, there may be some good shots but there will also be many bad ones. The driver may not think they are bad and wants them. That is where the “Can you just e-mail those to me” comment comes from. The amateur is delighted and rushes away to

package them in an e-mail and send them on their way. Now the Pro shooter is a bit more choosey and looks at all his shots. Rates them and then does some post work on them to make them better. When that is complete they will post a selection of photos online. But the same e-mail comment tends to come All Action, All The Time from MotorWerks Magazine

from the racer. And what is wrong with that you ask? It’s like this, many of these shooters have a huge investment in camera gear. In some cases, just a lens and a body easily exceeds the value of a sequential gearbox. And believe me nobody is showing up with just a body and lens. I personally have a cabinet stacked with out-of-date bodies and the odd redundant lens. In fact, my 300mm F2.8 lens is waiting to get packed up to get sent to Michigan to try and repair it because Canon no longer supports that lens. Of course, Canon Canada would sell me a new lens at $8000 but at this time that is not an option. How can I replace a lens at that price when people just want me to e-mail them the .jpg or digital negative? I was talking recently to fellow shooters who were seeing their photos appearing in online articles, all be it with a photo credit given. That’s ok isn’t it? Well, it all depends on where the images were obtained from. If it is from the photographer with his permission and there is absolutely no problem. But if the racer that is featured got them from the photographer either for a fee or free gratis there 106

probably was never any intention of images being passed on especially to a media outlet. Rob Wilkinson’s work can be seen in the Featured Photographer article further back in this issue. You can see by the EXIF data he has at least two camera bodies. When I discussed how he covered off the rights to his images when he lost them to racers he admitted, “I did in fact tell drivers they could pass their images along to their sponsors, in the past but I am currently reviewing the uses allowed by those rights and control the spread of images somewhat.” Now unlike my example above talking about the old days and the ink stamp laying out the acceptable uses for the image with digital we have no physical image to place a similar stamp on. Or do we? Each digital image has a file that is attached to it that we photographers refer to as EXIF. Exchangeable image file format holds data that is produced by the camera as it is used. Body type, lens type, aperture settings etc, but it also has a section where the copyright info can be filled in and that info stays with the image.

No matter whether the copyright information is filled in or not in the digital file, the industry standard for use after being sold is very similar. If we look at it from a motorsport point of view the following things apply. Being granted official media credentials comes with many rules and conditions. Normally the sanctioning body can have the use of the images but not the rights to them. That means they can use them in their social media to gain exposure. It does not give them the rights to hand them out willy nilly or give them to sponsors for use in advertising. In most cases they have their own photographers paid to provide photos for those uses.

Global Time Attack’s Jason Dienhart confirmed to me that their policy is very similar. “I have two or three photographers flying the GTA flag at every event. I review the media credentials for each event and some like yourself get an automatic add to the list as I know you are genuine media. Then there are local Pro shooters and gifted amateurs who also get accredited. My goal is to get coverage of the event and exposure for my racers.” Now where GTA differs is that their agreement that the shooter signs requests that twenty images be provided after the event for social media. Dienhart explained, “Those images are for GTA but I also provide links to my sponsors to allow them to see the albums and if they wish to use

images for social media they can. But it they want an image to run in advertising they have to contact the photographer and reach an agreement for its use. I know that has happened in the past and to my knowlege there has never been any use for commercial use without the photographer coming to an agreement with the sponsor.” Now many shooters are getting access without really being part of the media. That is up to the series to decide whether the benefits gained from allowing access is worthwhile. Being a team photographer does not automatically grant access, in fact IMSA requires team photographers to pay a fee to allow them to retail images. Media access there is truly that; it takes a letter from an Editor requesting access with the application before the request is considered. Now we get to the murky and most misunderstood part of motorsport photography, retail sales to racers. The digital age changed all this, where previously you bought a print and all you could do with it was hang it on your race shop wall, a racer that buys a digital image can pretty well do what he wants with it. Sponsored racers quite often agree to supply photos to their sponsors for their use in social media and advertising. The racer very often does not clarify that is the case with the shooter that they purchase the photo from. The use of the image just moved from personal to commercial because someone involved is making money. Any reputable company involved with a contract like this would clarify they had the rights to use the image or images and would give the appropriate credit to the photographer or media concern they represented. Now can you imagine arriving at a racetrack and seeing one of your images used by one of America’s leading auto makers on a huge billboard high above the track in direct view of one of the TV cameras. And to make it worse, you watch TV replays of the race and see the billboard repeatedly in the coverage. That is what happened to one of All Action, All The Time from MotorWerks Magazine

of Canon products are expensive, for instance the EOS-1D X Mark III body on its own is $6499. Then there is the cost of getting to an event. If it was not for the fact, I travel with James Houghton I would not be able to make as many events as I do. Accommodation is another cost that most shooters have to consider unless they are lucky enough to be offered space in an RV like I am. Most shooters, even the Pro ones have other jobs, they have to take time off work to get to travel to and from an event. These people are as dedicated as the racers themselves to promoting your sport to the masses.

our photographers. And best of all they had not supplied the image to the automaker; it had been passed on by the race team made things worse by not paying their bill. Another good friend our ours sold a digital image for personal use and at the next event here were 24” prints of the very same image for sale. Just because the person selling them is the person who bought the image does not keep the image in the personal domain. As soon as money changes hands the High Performance Urethane Bushings transaction becomes commercial. These stories and the fact that Pro Available for: shooters are out in all weathers for hours VW - Audi - BMW - Subaru - Mitsubishi on an end is one of the reasons that a Pro Lotus - MINI - Mazda - S2000 and more... photographer’s life is not as glamourous as most imagine. Yes, you get in for free but there can be a huge cost to that. So just what are those costs? We mentioned the crazy money that most have invested in equipment. And it is not just the cost of the equipment you shoot with, but everyone has at least one backup sitting at home to enable you to head out the following weekend if your #1 body www.powerflexusa.com is still under repair. So why did I write this article? Myself and the other shooters I talked to just wanted racers and sponsors to understand that the use of images online is not really as free as most people think. The fact that images are so easily found online does not make them fair game for any use. Photographers invest heavily in their equipment just as racers do and without support they could not covers event week in and week out. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not down Time Attack or any motorsport getting exposure, it’s great getting coverage for all the racers out there, in fact that is why I publish MotorWerks Magazine. Do I make money out of it? Hell no, but I am working hard towards that goal. This is my 51st year in motorsport and I joke that drug addicts can kick the habit easier than a racer or race fan. Motorsport can be one of the most exciting sports in the world and once introduced to it, MotorWerks Magazine has run some great racer features in the past like the one we did on Rotheli Racing. The images were shot by a great friend of theirs and we negotiated their use and the resulting article recieved many positive comments. The great thing about articles like this is that they are easily linkable with a dedicated hyperlink and can be easily found no matter how long they have been online. Those posted to a wall on Social Media disappear after a few posts and are hard to find in the future. I would never think of including images given to us by a racer without getting the original shooter’s permission. Hopefully this article has given some insight into the guys standing at the side of the track making racers look good. Keep the shiny side up and see you at the track. More Parts for Cooper RSR

Since the last issue we have recieved more parts for the build. As usual they are all from reputible companies and are great upgrades to anyones R53 MINI. All our Product Partners have a dedicatred page on out CooperRSR page on Facebook. Feel free to check them out.

CravenSpeed Parts

Portland, ON based Craven Speed are famous for making your life a little easier. They may not produce physically large components but but ones that have been cleverly designed to either fix problems with OEM parts One particular fix was engineered because of the MINI’s penchant for breaking the OEM dipstick and leaving the remains inside the dipstich tube and engine. The CravenSpeed Dipstick flexy spring style dipstick seen in the photo below does away with all the worry associated with the OEM version, will never break (And if it did, they would replace it!) The Oil Pressure Adapter is simply fitted by removing the OEM sensor from the filter housing and installing this adapter and replacing the sensor and new sensor or line. Cravenspeed also saw the need for proper instumentiation on the MINI range of cars. Like the BMW products MINI does not provide guages that most of us go faster owner would like to see. In my case I had already updated my cooling system with an adapter to bring the water temperature into my Racepak G2X Pro datalogger which then transmits the data and displays it on my Racepak IQ3 display dash. In addition to retailing the gauges to display the readings Cravenspeed, has machined adapters that are required to hook up lines or sensors to display the oil temperature and pressure data.

The Oil Temperature Adapter replaces the sump plug. It is shown here with a Racepak Temperature sensor installed into 1/8 npt threaded hole in the adapter.

Cartek Wireless Control System The Wireless Control System from CARTEK Motorsport Electronics is the quickest and easiest way to install pushbutton controls to a detachable racing steering wheel. The system has 8 pushbutton switches which are wirelessly linked to 8 relays within a

Powerflex Race Bushings

Relay Control Unit. These relays are microprocessor controlled and individually configurable to provide a choice of functions including momentary, latching and flashing modes for uses such as: PTT radio, pit lane limiter, dash menus, lights, indicators, etc.. The wireless control system ships with a universal fitting steering wheel panel, incorporating eight sealed pushbutton switches and infra red transmitter module, an infra red receiver and a relay control unit.

When you need to tighten up your cars suspension one of the easiest and cheapest ways is to replace the rubber bushings found in the many suspension joints on your car. Powerflex bushings are available in multiple durometers (hardness) polyurethane to suit your particular needs. Three options are available, for stock replacement choose Powerflex Street (Yellow: 70A) which maintains the OEM ride quality while improving tire life. For street performance, Powerflex Street maintains ride quality but tightens up the suspension to suit spirited driving (or Purple: 80A) or choose Powerflex race for ultimate performance. Race (Black: 95A), includes autocross, time trials, rally, and road racing. The option to choose your durometer is available on each part listing. Where necessary as decided by our product engineers some parts may only be available in the Black Series race version. It was a no-brainer of a choice for us, black Race bushings, all the way.

now been extended to the Zero 360 range. This is the perfect introduction for anyone looking to upgrade their fire suppression system to enjoy the efficient, lightweight and compact benefits of the Zero 360 Novec™1230 range.

Momentum Motorsport Tuned LSD Lifeline Zero 360 fire system I was really entreaged when I saw James Clay of BimmerWorld drop his cell phone in a jar of Novec™1230 fire extinguishant. And it still worked afterwards. UK based Lifeline have been in the business of saving racers from fires since 1994 and are particularly proud of being at the cutting edge of technology. The one thing has has changed since then is the extinguishants that have been developed. What we used to think was the best for the job are now frowned upon and are classed as bad for the environment. That is where Novec™1230 came along. Developed by the industrial giant 3M Novec™1230 does not deplete ozone and has a global warming potential of less than 1. It is used as gaseous fire suppression agent in places where water-based fire suppression would be impractical or where it could damage expensive equipment or property so that makes it perfect for motorsport applications. Lifeline USA offers the unit in two sizes, a 2.5kg (equivalent to 5#) or a 3.0kg that is slated for rallying. For Cooper RSR I chose to go with the larger unit as I have seen friends race cars that have had fires. Everything in the kit is the same except for the slightly larger bottle and when you campare it to many of the other fire system offerings on the market it is not big at all. When youOffering all the benefits of a Zero 360 Novec™1230 system but competitively price positioned, Lifeline’s popular Fire Marshal brand has 112

We got to know the name Momentum Motorsport when our friend James Houghton bought a pair of Quaife sequential gearboxes for his Integra Type R. When it was time to put a plate type limited slip differential in his road race Acura TSX he went back to Momentum and they supplied a 3J Driveline NXG Performance diff with a custom Momentum tune and it performed flawlessly during its debut year 2020. James could not say enough good things about the diff and it made sense for us to go the same route with the one for CooperRSR. Andrew the head honcho over at Momentum took the time (over 1/2 hour) to chat to me and find out exactly what we were going to use the car for and the type of driver I was. With that all noted down the order was put in the system and the LSD shipped from Northern Ireland a week later. You can’t beat that for service, can you?

APR Racing Hood Vents One of the major issues the R53 MINI has is excessive heat that can cause major and expensive damage as well as limiting performance when the DME (ECU) retards the ignition. We sourced some carbon fiber APR Hood Vents that will vent any excessive heat that builds up in the engine bay. They are built using pre-preg. carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials for superior strength-to-weight ratio, and add both function and “lightness” where it counts. They also come with a UV resistant coating to keep them looking as good as new. The vents have external dimensions of 10.5” x 8”.

Rice-Rocket Powder Coating Isn’t the Internet a wonderful thing? I was searching for a powder coating company within easy driving distance of our Oakville, ON base when I surfed onto a company called Rice Rocket Powder Coating. They had a very professional looking website that showcases their services well and the facility itself seemed to be very well appointed. So i dropped them an e-mail as we were in Covid mode at that point and Colin and I had a great conversion via keyboards. When our government got around to opening things up a bit so we could move around I took the opertunity to head out by the Toronto airport and check them out and the website did not do them justice. The facility was everything the website portrayed them to be and more! The company is owned and run by a great couple called Colin and Sky. They were very down to earth and as Sky is a bit of a MINI fan she thought it would be great to get involved with our project. Colin showed me around and it was very impressive. They have the ability not only to powder coat your wheels but remove the tires, coat the rims, reinstall and balance the tires, all ready to go. This is the third facility that they have worked out of with everyone of them having to be bigger to meet demand. in fact they are so busy just now they are looking for help. The better weather showed its face in Toronto and wheels just started rolling in. Everyone has had enough of winter and Covid and they are ready for road trips. A huge part of their business is recoating brake calipers . They not only have the ability to give your calipers a great new custom look they can also incorporate decals that match the brand of the brakes or the car itself. In fact check out the custom Toronto Raptors championship winning calipers for the ultimate basketball fan. What attracted me most? The fact their oven is large enough to take Cooper RSR and the whole bodyshell can be powder coated! 116

Just What Is It? Seen at the 2020 CSCS Finale

This be-winged, carbon monster was spotted at the Canadian Sport Compact Series finale at Toronto Motorsport Park. It has a powerplant you would not expect to find in a Time Attack car and it had to run in the Exhibition class as it was not production based. Further investigation led us to find out it pretty well is home built and with a bit of luck and the cooperation of the Covid-19 virus and the Ontario government we hope to see it at the track and get enough photos for a full-blown article for a future issue.

Operating as Syndicate Race Photos Rob Wilkinson is a very talented photographer living in Grand Rapids, MI. One of the official Gridlife shooters Rob can be seen at every event scurrying around trying not to miss that ‘great capture’ His passion for motorsport and graphics opened up a new avenue for him when we got struck by the Covid epidemic, he turned his talents to creating livery design. With the popularity of iRacing while everyone was stuck at home Rob set to and started designing rac car liveries for bot the real and virtual world’s.

Although Rob is well known for his action shots taken at the track his combination of static shots with great lighting really create an image that tells a story. This shot of a Viper almost reminds you of the snake it was named after, just sitting there all coiled up just waiting to strike! The image would not have had the same impact if the background was totally black. There is enough seen in the background that your eyes are roaming all over trying to figure out what it is but with the way the Viper is lit your eyes always return to the car. 122
