Tissues At The Ready As UK Gears Up For Fond “Au Revoir” To Twingo RenaultSport 133

Just over five years since bursting onto the pocket rocket scene, to a blaze of glowing media punditry, the time has nearly come to say “au revoir” to the beloved Twingo Renaultsport 133. Or, at least as we currently know it. With a new Twingo being readied behind the scenes for launch next year, Renaultsport’s entry model is preparing to hang up its road and track boots. All is not lost just yet though. As, like little puppies chomping at the bit, six of the little wonders are currently in UK stock awaiting new loving homes. So, eager pocket rocket aficionados had better be quick off the line to secure one, before this country’s allocation runs out completely. The halo model in the iconic Twingo range first launched to Brits back in July 2008, with a total of 1,203 Twingo Renaultsports having found cherished homes in the UK since. Right from the get go, it didn’t take long to see that the Renaultsport arm’s crack performance team had worked their chassis and performance magic on the baby of the range. To stunning effect some might say, given the car’s humble city car origins. Critically acclaimed from the outset, not just by the way it drove and handled, but also for its sporty looks and cheeky character, its departure, be it temporary or otherwise, is sure to be sorrowfully noted. With its peppy, naturally-aspired 133hp 1.6-litre engine, revving to 6,750rpm at full tilt, and powering only 1050kg, its endeared itself to a whole host of admirers. Track or road, the Renaultsport 133 left smiles on the faces of everyone who got behind the wheel.

Its cute, but racy looks set the scene for a focused driving experience even before you got behind the chunky Renaultsport leather steering wheel. The flagship Twingo still bore a strong family resemblance, but with plenty of visual drama added into the mix. Among its bespoke touches were a unique tailpipe, plus beefed up bodywork, including extended side sills and wheelarches, and a rear spoiler. Striking 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels and an F1-inspired front blade completed the purposeful look. Once inside, the performance theme continued with an array of sporty touches. Several of its highlights being the Renaultsport rev counter and front sports seats, plus brushed aluminium pedals. Hardcore trackdayers and gadget fans weren’t forgotten either, with the onboard telemetry system, Renaultsport Monitor, recently made available too. Whichever version buyers opted for, be it the standard version with Sport chassis, the even more sought after Cup chassis versions, or exclusive Gordini or Silverstone GP limited editions, in any guise, it offered a bucketload of smiles. In fact, with a great foundation to work with, the road car even spawned successful rally versions, R1 and R2. Entry into the hallowed realm of Renaultsport ownership world didn’t come too steeply either. The single run out version, simply Twingo Renaultsport 133, is priced at £13,955, excluding the optional Cup chassis, making it one of the simplest, but most effective and affordable ways to learn the delights of

hot hatchery. Unsurprising then, that it was consistently hailed as the benchmark pocket hot hatch for the money, racking up multiple awards along the way, including Best Hot Hatch under £15,000 What Car? in 2010 and 2011. Its hidden talents didn’t end there either. Belying its compact footprint, the top-of-the-range Twingo, like the standard range, was eminently practical. Top billing going to its individually sliding and folding rear seats. This meant that bootspace or rear legroom could both be juggled around at will, whether it was for a four-up trip with some mates to an adrenalin-fuelled trackday at Spa, or a zen-scented romantic break with a loved one to a slightly more tranquil type of spa. So, what’s in store for a future performance Twingo? Officially, there’s been no confirmation of a replacement sporty version of the eagerly-awaited new city car. However, speculation’s rife. Not least as Renault’s Chief Operating Officer, Carlos Tavares, only recently shook the streets of Monaco over the Grand Prix weekend in the jaw-dropping 320hp V6 midengined and rear-wheel-drive Twin’Run concept car. Style and powertrain-wise, its bigger brother, the Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo EDC has also recently ushered in a chic, five-door bodyshell, plus a downsized turbocharged TCe engine to deliver the same power as its preceding 2.0-litre. Whatever happens, one thing’s for sure, it will be sorely missed.

Out of 1,500 drivers surveyed involved in an accident in the past 8 months, 15 per cent said they had not replaced their car, instead switching to using public transport, sharing a car with family or colleagues or relying just on a single family car. And when drivers suffer even minor damage in an accident nearly a half (47 per cent) of drivers used the accident as an excuse to replace their car. That could account for nearly 70,000 cars annually as the Department of Transport recorded 140,000 accidents between April 2012 and March 2013.

Generally drivers said they replace a damaged car with a smaller car to reduce motoring costs. Eighty eight per cent of those drivers whose cars received light damage and who weren’t already driving a small car downsized their car to something smaller. Only where a driver’s car was written off did they decide to upsize their car, with 85 per cent converting their insurance cheque into something bigger and older. Meanwhile 86 per cent of those drivers with moderate damage who didn’t already own a small car have bought one and generally spent less money on its replacement. “As far as we can make out drivers feel their car is tainted once it has been damaged in an accident as 47 per cent admitted to not wanting it after it

has been repaired,” explained Jerome McManus, Helphire group’s marketing director. “We believe those drivers who have decided not to replace their car after it has been written off are generally responding to a continued rise in motoring costs combined with a change in their own travel requirements,” he added. www.helphire.co.uk

Honda Takes The Covers Off New Civic Tourer

Honda has taken the wraps off the new British built Civic Tourer ahead of its official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013. The sleek exterior design of the new Civic Tourer houses a spacious interior which delivers exceptional versatility and functionality. It features Honda’s innovative Magic Seat system and offers a class leading boot space of 624 litres with the rear seats in place, up to the window line. This expands to 1668 litres with the rear seats down and up to the roof. The Civic Tourer will be available with the choice of two engines; the new 1.6 i-DTEC engine from the Earth Dreams Technology series and the 1.8 i-VTEC engine in manual or automatic transmission. The introduction of a brand new Adaptive Damper System (ADS) will help to enhance stability and comfort under varying load and driving conditions. There is also a very handy hidden compartment perfect for storing the tonneau cover when it is not needed. Furthermore, there is additional under floor storage in the boot which makes carrying tall objects in the boot easy, plus the height of the loading lip has been reduced by 137mm* compared to the Civic hatchback to facilitate effortless loading. The exterior design of the Civic Tourer is sleek and sporty, its distinctive style is defined by a bold line that runs continuously from the front A-pillar to the D-pillar creating the impression of a floating roof line. The glass of the rear quarter window has been extended to cover the body work of the D-pillar and the rear door sash has been raised by 17mm compared to the Civic hatchback to create this bold styling line.

Driving Performance: Advanced and Efficient Technology The Civic Tourer will be available with the1.6 i-DTEC engine from the Earth Dreams Technology series or the 1.8 i-VTEC engine in manual or automatic transmission. 1.6 i-DTEC The 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine was first applied to the Civic hatchback and subsequently to the new CR-V. The engine is the first of Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology series to be introduced in Europe. The philosophy behind Earth Dreams Technology is to deliver an impressive balance between fuel economy and driving performance and this is certainly the case in the Civic Tourer. The 1.6 i-DTEC engine is comprised of an aluminium cylinder head joined to an open deck aluminium block and is the lightest diesel engine in its class. The mechanical friction has been reduced to the level equivalent of a petrol engine. Used Car Values Continue To Rise Year On Year Following the trend set by other sectors of the UK economy, July was also a good month for used car values according to the latest data from leading vehicle remarketing specialist, British Car Auctions (BCA). The latest BCA Pulse report shows that yearon-year values are up by 11.2% as good quality stock remains in short supply. In particular, the company reports that demand from professional buyers has continued to be relatively strong despite the market entering one of the traditionally slower times of the year.

Across the board used cars averaged £6,875 in July, down by £125 compared to June, but significantly ahead of July 2012 by £695 (11.2%). Average mileage continues to fall and cars are one month younger when sold in 2013 compared to last year. Commenting on the figures Tim Naylor, Editor of the BCA Pulse Report said: “The summer holiday period is typically quieter in terms of buying activity in the wholesale markets, but that is being balanced by the on-going shortage of good quality used cars. This

means there is plenty of competition for cars that feature a decent specification, an attractive colour and a sensible mileage “In particular, cars entered from dealer part-exchange sources have outperformed the market in recent weeks because these are generally very affordable. It’s Porsches For Courses For Car Owners Made In Chelsea

With its prestigious properties and upmarket department stores The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is renowned for its wealth. Now data from Aviva shows that the cars on the King’s Road fit the reputation, with sports cars and luxury motors a regular sight. Aviva analysed car ownership data across ten key areas of the UK, including; Chelsea and Kensington, Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff*. Among these places the wealthy borough has the highest proportion of Porsches (1.31%), Mercedes (7.41%), BMWs (6.88%) and Audis (5.89%). Porsches are nearly four times as popular and Mercedes three times as popular as many parts of the UK. And if you add up the number of Porsches, Audis, BMWs and Mercedes in Chelsea it is more than double the amount of Fords - generally the most popular make of car on the road. In comparison, Norwich has twice as many Fords than the combined number of Porsches, Audis, BMWs and Mercedes in the London borough. Size also matters with Chelsea having the highest proportion of large family cars (10.56%) and the lowest proportion of small family cars (27.50%). This compares to Cardiff which has 41% small family cars on the road and just over 5% large family cars. But the high proportion of sports and executive cars has left many Chelsea pensioners off the road. Chelsea and Kensington has the lowest proportion of drivers over the age of 60 (10.45%) compared with Norwich which has the highest proportion (16.4%). And younger drivers are also staying off the King’s Road with less than 4% aged between 17 and 21. Exeter has the highest proportion of young drivers with over 14%, while Birmingham has over 11%. The data also shows: Edinburgh has over double the proportion of 4x4s than Manchester (6.4% - 3.1%) Newcastle has the highest proportion of people carriers (6.2%) Exeter has the most old cars (41.3%) and the fewest new

cars (16.6%) Glasgow has significantly more new cars than old (30.4% - 20.4%) Exeter is the only area that has more young drivers than old drivers (14.6% - 14.4%) Heather Smith director of car insurance at Aviva said: “Chelsea and Kensington has a reputation for being a place where the rich and famous reside and their cars certainly match that image. With proportionally three times as many Porsches and four times as many Mercedes as other parts of the UK, it would be hard to miss one driving down the King’s Road. “The rest of the UK tells a very different story, with small family cars being much more numerous and sports cars being more of a rarity - around 40% of the cars in Manchester, Newcastle and Cardiff are small family cars like a Ford Focus and a Volkswagon Golf, significantly higher than the 27% driving around Chelsea.

“And regionally there are further differences with Edinburgh having over double the proportion of 4x4s than Manchester and Exeter having the most cars over 10 years’ old. Biggest Change In Traffic Policing For Decades, Says IAM Fixed penalty notices for careless driving offences such as middle lane hogging came into effect on Friday 16 August 2013, according to road safety charity IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists). Following a government consultation announced in June, the ÂŁ100 fine will be introduced for a wide range of careless driving offences including tailgating and middle lane hogging. The IAM advise that in car distractions that cause you to swerve or drive badly could lead to prosecution, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to inconvenience other road users to be issued with a ticket. Some typical examples of careless driving are: Overtaking on the inside; driving inappropriately close to another vehicle; inadvertently driving through a red light; emerging from a side road into the path of another vehicle; tuning a car radio; when the driver was avoidably distracted by this action; selecting and lighting a cigarette or similar when the driver was avoidably distracted by that use. IAM chief executive Simon Best said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;If the police target the worst and most persistent offenders this could be good news for road safety. If, however, it just becomes another numbers game with thousands of careless driving tickets issued then the impact will be limited. The IAM believes that driver retraining courses have a much bigger potential to actually improve poor driving than simply issuing a standard fine and should always be offered as the first stage of prosecution.â&#x20AC;?

How good are you at parallel parking?

You’re running late. It’s a busy town centre High Street and there’s nowhere to park your car apart from one tantalisingly small car parking space. You can just about squeeze in, but it’s not going to be easy and self doubt creeps in.... after all, passers-by may well be laughing as you try to parallel park between two parked cars! Do you attempt to reverse into that space or should you carry on hunting for an easier spot? Well, the answer seems to depend largely on which gender you are! The fact is many UK drivers - some 45% consider themselves to be pretty good, or even excellent, at parallel parking, according to a new nationwide survey by breakdown service Autonational Rescue. But only six per cent of women drivers thought their parallel parking skills were ‘excellent’ (compared with 19% of men), while 27% said they were ‘good’ (again compared with 36% of male drivers). The figures between the sexes evened out among the number of drivers who thought they were ‘average’ at this type of parking, with 34% of women believing just that, compared with just under a third of all men. However, 18% of women drivers accepted they were ‘poor’ parallel parkers (compared with

just 10% of men) while 12% of female drivers admitted they were actually ‘terrible’ at it, compared with two per cent of men. Said Ronan Hart, Autonational Rescue’s Motor Breakdown Class Underwriter: “Despite the use of some clever parking aids by some motorists, such as parking sensors, the survey highlights just what motorists think about their own essential car parking skills. “Everyone wants to avoid that nightmare scenario of a wheel mounting the kerb, a hubcap being scraped, hitting the bumper of a neighbouring car or leaving your car stranded several feet from the pavement. “Taking account of the complete set of results, nearly 13 per cent of all drivers said that their parallel parking skills were ‘excellent’ while a further 32 per cent thought they were ‘good’ at parallel parking.” What’s more, a third of all drivers described their skill as ‘average’ while almost 14 per cent admitted they were ‘poor’ at parallel parking. While seven per cent of drivers (male and female together) held their hands up and agreed that their skill at this type of parking was simply ‘terrible’. Regional variations of the main statistics told a different story.

In the North of England, 14% of all motorists considered themselves excellent at parallel parking, 29% good, 32% average, 16% poor and 8% terrible. In the Midlands, 13% of all motorists considered themselves excellent at parallel parking, 31% good, 32% average, 18% poor and 5% terrible. In the East of England, 8% of all motorists considered themselves excellent at parallel parking, 35% good, 36% average, 14% poor and 7% terrible. In London, where arguably more practice is gained at difficult city parking, 22% considered themselves excellent at parallel larking, 25% good, 37% average, 12% poor and 3% terrible. In the South of England, 8% of all motorists considered themselves excellent at parallel parking, 36% good, 36% average, 11% poor and 8% terrible. In Wales, 15% of all motorists considered themselves excellent at parallel parking, 33% good, 33% average, 10% poor and 10% terrible. In Scotland, 12% considered themselves excellent at parallel parking, 33% good, 31% average, 12% poor and 11% terrible.
