September ‘63’ Plate To Bring Used Car Bonanza

AA Cars: ‘used car sales will hit new high’. Half of buyers will use savings to buy their next car. AA Cars is gearing up for a busy few weeks following the September ‘63’ registration plate change, thanks to an increasingly optimistic new car market. David Bruce, director of AA Cars points out that for every new car sold, at least three used cars change hands over subsequent weeks. “Between September and November we’re expecting dealers to be busier than they have been for some years,” he says. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new car sales are expected to pass 2.2m by the end of 2013 - the highest since 2008 and 8.4% ahead of 2012. During September around 424,000 ‘63’-plate cars are expected to be sold.

Saving wins over borrowing to pay for a car According to the AA Financial Services Car Purchase Index, which tracks the car buying intentions of AA members, just over half of buyers (52%) expect to pay for their new car with savings. Mark Huggins, director of AA Financial Services points out that with continuing low interest rates, many people are cashing in savings and are avoiding taking on more credit. “Being a cash buyer could give you an edge in terms of bargaining for a discount. With a glut of used cars on the market many dealers will be keen to see stock move quickly and may be ready to do a deal.” However, not everyone has the luxury of spare savings to spend on a car and, according to the AA’s

Mr Huggins says it’s worth comparing car dealer finance with personal loans. “Shopping around could get you a good interest rate for a personal loan, which then puts you in the position of a cash buyer,” he says. “Another relatively new option is to use a fixed rate money transfer credit card, which enables the card holder to transfer cash into their bank account and pay it back at a fixed rate for as long as they wish to take. “This can be useful to top up available cash to perhaps go for a younger or improved specification car.”

Pink Car Rally 2013 Two days - two destinations. The annual Pink Car Rally is ready to roll its pink positivity across UK roads again, on the 7th & 8th September. The Pink Car Rally was created as a 5-year awareness and fundraising initiative for the Little Princess Trust charity, which gives ‘real hair’ wigs to children and young people across the UK and Ireland, culminating in the John O’Groats to Land’s End rally in 2012. Sali Gray, creator and organiser of the Pink Car Rally explained “We raised £16,000 last year, which would have been the perfect way to end the pink project, but two of our regular Pinkies had a horrific year and missed the rally, so this one is for them.” Sisters, Nadine and Tania had been Pinkie participants in every rally, but a few months before the last rally Nadine - who was 22 years old and 26 weeks pregnant - discovered she had cancer, which meant she couldn’t commit to the epic 6-day event. With Nadine’s encouragement, her sister Tania decided to drive her pink car from Nottingham to Webbs of Wychbold, to meet the Pinkies on Leg 5 of the rally. She had only managed to travel a short distance on the M1, when an out-of-control car careered into her, launching her into a lorry, which in turn catapulted her car into the central reservation. Thankfully Tania and her friend survived the horrific crash, but missed the rally rendezvous. Sali was so shocked by these events that she pledged to bring the rally to the girls’ home town of Nottingham this year.

We have to rely on word of mouth and social networking.” It certainly seems to be working - the Pink Car Rally Facebook page has over 3000 ‘likes’ from 20 countries and Sali has received expressions of interest for Pink Car Rallies in Canada, America and Germany. “I would be more than happy to help organise a Pink Car Rally in another country”, enthused Sali. “I feel very

Pirelli And MINI Challenge Set Sail For Zandvoort For the first time in six years, the Pirelli-supported MINI Challenge will compete on European soil as the one-make racing series prepares for the penultimate round of the year in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, this weekend (7-8 September). First opened back in 1948, the 2.7 mile Zandvoort circuit hosted the Dutch round of Formula One until 1985. It is characterised by fast, sweeping corners such as the Tarzanbocht hairpin (Tarzan corner) and will be a true test of talent for the MINI Challenge drivers who will have no chance to test on the circuit before the race. Following his double victory at the most recent round at Castle Combe, Englishman Shane Stoney will be hoping to extend his lead in both the overall standings and the Cooper Class. With two rounds remaining Chris Smith leads the John Cooper Works Class, 11 points ahead of Chris Smiley. “Zandvoort is my best chance at taking a race win so far,” explained Cooper Class driver, Ricky Page. “Everybody going there will be in the same boat nobody has tested there so the pressure is on to learn. For once track experience won’t be a factor

and it will be whoever finds out the tricks to the track first that will benefit.”

Pirelli UK Motorsport Operations Manager, Matthew Corby, added: “Zandvoort could be one of those races that separate the men from the boys. It’s a new addition to the MINI challenge calendar and this time nobody can benefit from knowing the circuit better than the others. It’s going to be a level playing field and with none of the drivers having had the chance to test at Zandvoort, it’ll be interesting to see who comes out top. Longrange weather forecasts show that temperatures will hover in the late twenties on Saturday so we are expecting Pirelli’s 225/62517 DH slick tyre to be the tyre of choice. However, we

Franchitti Targets New Book Three-times Indy 500 winner and four-times champion Dario Franchitti has a new book coming out in late November. The publication, a joint project with friend and former editor of Autosport and RACER magazines, Andy Hallbery, is a collection of essays written by the Scot about legends, his heroes and friends in racing from the 1950s to date. The high-quality, 128-page coffee-table book is illustrated by some of the sportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest photographersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; archives, including LAT Photographic, Sutton Images, Cahier, and Getty Images, as well as gifted individuals. The foreword
