We know we are on to something!

I

t’s HOT out! Hey this is a

destination magazine not the Weather Channel. So lets find some destinations that may be a bit more comfortable than the steamy flatlands. Yes, that would be the Mountains and the foothills. Quiet towns, light traffic (if you know where to go) and more unique festivals and charm than you can shake a thermometer at! The entire month of July is packed with destinations for the adventurous or those who just want to relax. Like the 8 th Annual Red White & Bluegrass Festival - Morganton or Christmas in July up in West Jefferson. Head a little further west and hit the 55th Annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games or enjoy one of the many Pig Roasts, BBQ CookOffs or Gallery Crawls. Experience one of the quirky festivals like 48th Annual Coon Dog Day in Saluda. Music is a large part of Western Carolina and the number of music festivals reflects that. Just a few... Bele Chere Festival in Asheville, 46th Annual Macon County Gemboree, Live Music & More at The Historic Orchard at Altapass just so many to choose from.

4

That’s what it is like all year in North Carolina, 100’s of events to choose from. That’s where Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine comes in, The Destination Magazine. We will sort through dozens of calendars, travel to out of the way destinations to find out what is happening and present those choices to you. Our online calendar is one of the best. We incorporate Google in our web page so when you visit us online you will get the same look and feel whether you’re are on a desktop computer or your mobile phone. The calendar can be viewed by week, month or as a list. You can add events to your Google calendar with one click. And best of all we have a website and a map tool that will show you where the event is and how to get there. If you are looking for a destination our Destination Guide will bring a map right to your computer or phone. Please check this out online and give us some feedback, it’s pretty neat! – Andy

Bass Lake & Down The Diamondback L ast Wednesday, I headed out early for a nice ride. I planned on visiting Bass Lake near Blowing Rock, NC and then take The Parkway back to Rt 226 and Marion for a visit with Sam at Moondoggy’s Diner. The ride to Blowing Rock was on a very relaxing four-lane. As I rode up the mountain, I remembered how it was only a few years ago when it was only a two-lane road. It was treacherous especially with all the trucks using the road. It was a great improvement. Once in Blowing Rock I followed Business 321 through town until I turned left onto Rt 221. After a couple miles, I turned right into the Bass Lake parking area. It was a little before 9:00AM and it was cool and a little hazy. The lake was beautiful with the Water Lillys in bloom and the Rhododendron along the shore. It was like walking through a garden. I always enjoy the short walk around the

6

lake. The other people who walk and run it regularly for exercise are very friendly too. I continued on The Parkway and my next stop was on the side of the road in view of the Linn Cove Viaduct. It’s an engineering marvel. It always amazes me that they built The Parkway around Grandfather Mountain instead of through it like so many others. The viaduct was the last piece of The Parkway built and is probably the most photographed. I continued on The Parkway until I turned off at Little Switzerland (Rt 226A). I had heard from a friend that “The Diamondback” was being promoted in one of the shops. I went into the Little Switzerland Trading Post and talked with Bill about The Diamondback and other motorcycle related subjects. I got a lot of info about the ever growing number of named Continued on page 32

Wanna Wreck Your Diet? S

eafood at it’s best is not only a motto for Big Daddy’s, it’s a way of life. For 37 years the y have b een serving up some of the best seafood the area has to offer. “We hear customers say all the time that they have been at the beach all week but waited to get their seafood fix when they got back home,” explains owner Freddie Lancaster. It all started back in 1963 when Tommy Lancaster, Freddie’s grandfather, opened a small hangout for the local teens in Kure Beach. Everyone began to call him Big Daddy after his resemblance to Burl Ives who had starred in the hit movie Cat on a Hot Tin Roof a few years before. From there, it stuck. The hangout grew into a restaurant appropriately named Big Daddy’s. The restaurant moved to the Lake Norman area in 1974 becoming a favorite spot among a new set of locals. “We have regular customers that eat with us a least once a week,” says Lancaster. “We know about their family, birthdays, businesses; they are just as much apart of the restaurant as we are.” Ask any of these regulars and they will tell you all about Big

Daddy’s. There is a reason they don’t miss their weekly visit. The food can explain that. The fried seafood platters are sure to wreck your diet. Piled high with a mixture of lightly breaded seafood, a side of homemade slaw, and your choice of side, these entrees will please any taste buds that crave something from the sea. However, if you are not aiming to gain a few extra pounds in one sitting, they offer an array of healthier choices. The salad bar could make a meal out of itself if you choose, offering countless toppings and dressings. All of the choice steaks and broiled platters are popular as well. They also carry a catch of the day that varies from grilled Grouper to Mahi. If you aren’t in for a feast, the menu provides options for those with a lighter appetite also. Smaller portions of select dishes are available under the children’s and senior citizen’s section. Don’t worry though, there’s no age limit.

If seafood isn’t something you appreciate, don’t write this one off just yet. They have a menu of over 50 items, with many of those favorites of landlubbers. This includes Baby Back Ribs, Prime Rib, Chicken Alfredo, and so on. However, come in on a Monday night, and you won’t hear any talk of these items. Oysters are what’s on everyone lips, literally. You can get a peck (which is give or take 3 dozen) for the half peck price. Or if you have a lighter appetite or are just looking for a starter, the dozen is sold at the half-dozen price. Don’t be surprised if there is a wait for this 50 seat oyster bar on Monday nights. “We shuck them for you. All you have to do is eat!” Freddie says with a smile. He knows how to keep his customers coming back. Sit around and you’ll see him walking through

Run To The Ridge W

inding roads, spectacular scenery, the Blue Ridge Parkway, live music, and the chance to win up to $50,000. All that and more is on tap during the Run to the Ridge Bike Fest, to be held July 28-30 at Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Mount Airy. This unique bike rally promises to be something special, and a worthy trip for Charlotte-area moto-tourists. Organizers created the Run to the Ridge in hopes of raising $15,000 for the Second Harvest Food Bank, and also to showcase what’s available for tourists in Surry County and the surrounding area. The main event is the poker run, which is open to all bikers and drivers of pre-1979 cars and trucks. Participants, at their lei-

sure, can ride Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or all three days. The run includes six stops interspersed among the Yadkin Valley wine country, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the highlands of Virginia. Experienced riders will recognize many of the stops, including Freeborne’s Eatery & Lodge on the Parkway in Laurel Springs; Wytheville Harley-Davidson in Wytheville, Va.; Tuggle’s Gap Restaurant & Motel in Floyd, Va.; and the Mayberry-inspired Wally’s Service Station in Mount Airy. The remaining two stops are the famous Snappy Lunch in downtown Mount Airy, and the popular RagApple Lassie winery in Boonville. There will be two prizes up for grabs in the poker run – best hand

and worst hand. Best hand wins $4,500 and the worst hand gets $500. Plus, both winners will cut a deck of cards for the opportunity to draw for a chance to win $50,000 or a custom bike valued at $45,000 from Kendall Johnson Customs in Winston-Salem. Entry fee for the poker run is $25 per bike/vehicle or $30 per couple, and that fee includes entry into all

weekend events. In addition to the poker run, the Rat Rod & Bike Show takes place Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park on South Main Street in Mount Airy. Custom cycle builders from across the Southeast will be there, along with a dozen or so vendors. The cost to enter a bike or rat Continued on page 34

you know Karen and Tim have fun with their wines. That dedication and passion shows when you uncork the bottle. Pick a bottle of wine, get one of the bags of goodies available and a jar of Rothschild or Slightly Askew’s own label of mustard, jellies or sauces to dip them in. Enjoy some relaxation time on the raised back deck. The deck faces west so be prepared, you just may have to deal with a spectacular sunset with your wine. A unique twist at Slightly Askew… if you taste a wine you really like, you can purchase a bottle or you can purchase all the accessories necessary to produce that wine (or similar) in your own home. They also carry a line of beer making products for the home brewer. As tempting as it may be to spend your enter day at Slightly Askew, you are encouraged to venture on to one of the other tasting rooms of the Very Surry Wineries. As they say in Elkin, 20 tasting rooms within 20 minutes.

Fill ᾿er Up Please When I think of BBQ I think of a little white shack with a smoker and a ton of wood out back. That’s the BBQ I remember growing up. I know those shacks are gone, but the feeling of that era can’t be beat. Drive down Beatties Ford Road in Huntersville and you’ll see this BBQ joint on the side of the road, and you immediately think of cruisers parked under those iron light posts. It just looks and feels like a great place to hang out and talk about your ride. The building is a restored service station, the center of social gatherings back in the day. The old service bay is a full service bar and the sociable side of the service station is now a dining room filled with auto and shop memorabilia. Jeff Lancaster started selling his BBQ and Wings here in 2006. Much attention was given to updating the look of the restaurant without destroying the character of the building. The food is old tyme great tastin’ home made gifts for your mouth. I eat a lot of BBQ and I can’t tell you where to find any better. Special attention is given to the fried food with homemade batter and sauces to enhance the flavors. You get the idea that this is a unique place to grab a bite or a beverage with your friends and family. Now, I just have to remember to ask Jeff where he hid the little white shack... roads in and near the North Carolina Mountains. When I passed Rt 226, I noticed that there was a long line of traffic due to construction halfway down the mountain so I decided to ride The Diamondback down to Marion. “The Diamondback” is the name given to Rt 226A from Little Switzerland to where it joins up with Rt 226 just north on Marion. It is a very twisty road with a few of the corners named as well – “Down & Dirty”, “O’ Dear Corner”, “Off the Deep End”, and “Post Office Sweeper” are only a few. After enjoying the ride down, I stayed on Rt 226 as it went into Marion. I stopped at Moondoggy’s Diner for a cold glass of Sam’s great sweat tea. One of the customers said that she lived on Rt 226A and has noticed a growing number of motorcycles and sports cars on her road. She told us how she put a group of Corvettes in their place earlier in the year when she pulled away from them in her mini-van. She knew the road and they didn’t. I still think that it was embarrassing for a corvette to be out done by a mini-van - they couldn’t keep up. I said my good-bys and was home a little after 1:00PM. It was a great way to spend a morning in the mountains. I will do it again soon. – Wally Wersching
