Thank you for reading Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine. We are always very happy to hear from our clients, and our mototourists how much you enjoy our fresh approach to MotoTourism. We love to hear stories about unique places you have been. When you find a great destination, it’s fun to hear how you describe the destination you found with such enthusiasm. It’s easy to see that a large number of people are wanting to get out and find somewhere new to go, and this is why we print Dashboards and Saddlebags “The Destination Magazine” for you each month. We are having such a great time getting out and meeting new people and finding destinations to write about. We are very happy to hear how you enjoy the different types of

destinations we write about. We try to find destinations you might not have heard about. For example, how many people heard about the Livermush Festival in Marion this year? If you picked up the first Issue of Dashboards and Saddlebags you knew about it! We are looking for people who share the same enthusiasm we have for getting out and finding new destinations and sharing the experience. If you have ever thought; “I’ve passed this place a thousand times, it’s time to stop and check it out” you are the kind of person we would like to hear from. First Time Walk Through The “Hall”

ast Wednesday, Danny and I went to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC. We both heard about it but never got the chance to go. Danny was off last week and I’ve been off for over a year now so we decided to go see what the museum had. We are both NASCAR fans and have gone to a few races. We’re not fanatic fans though. I think that we’d both like to watch it on TV rather than being at the track. We can see more at home than at the track but we don’t get the smells and sounds relating to the race. We also avoid all the traffic. In the morning, I went on-line to look at what to expect at the Hall of Fame. They had a promotion where you get a free simulator ride if you bring in a Coca-Cola product. I went out and bought a six-pack so we’d have a couple Cokes to bring. Also it said to bring the parking ticket into the Hall and get 25% off. I downloaded the directions just in case

we got lost. It’s easy to get lost in Charlotte! We arrived at the Hall about 11:00AM and bought our tickets. We also got free simulator rides with the two Cokes and got the parking ticket stamped. Now we were ready to go into the Hall. We walked into the Hall and went into the Belk High Octane Theater to watch a motivational movie about NASCAR to get us in the NASCAR mood. Then we started looking at all the cars. We recognized the first group of cars because we were fans of the drivers who drove them – Davey Allison, Tim Richmond and Alan Kulwicki. All three drivers died too soon. Tim Richmond died of AIDS and Davey and Alan both died in helicopter crashes. There’s no telling what the sport would be like now if they had lived. They were all great drivers in their time. Next we walked up the Sunoco Glory Road where many of the old NASCAR legends were honored. Continued on page 30

nCorked is a quaint wine shop located in Mt Air y, North Carolina, a small town in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area was first settled in 1747 and the first post office was established in 1832. The town of Mt. Airy was formed in 1889. The area became known as the Hollows because the community sits in a bowled depression surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Mount Airy was world renowned for the White Sulfur Springs. A BMW, a Nash, a Mountain Run

ast Saturday, I was trying to figure out where to go for my Sunday Morning ride when I remembered the Hill Top Restaurant in Burnsville. One Sunday morning a few years ago, I passed it and there were a few bikes parked out front. They said that they would meet there before going on their Sunday ride. I went on line and learned that the restaurant opened at 8:00AM so it would be good to get there about 8:30 to visit with the bikers. I left home Sunday morning about 7:00AM heading north on Rt 226. When I got to Marion, I turned left onto Rt 70. After a mile or so, I turned right onto my favorite road – Rt 80. The farther north I got, the cooler it became. I stopped at Lake Tahoma because the water looked like a big mirror. There was almost no wind to break up the surface. It was beautiful. I followed Rt 80 up to the Blue

Ridge Parkway and down the other side. I was glad that I wore a long sleeve shirt and a jacket because it was much cooler on the other side of the mountain. At the stop sign, I turned left to go to Rt 19E. I followed Rt 19E into Burnsville. I rode up to the Hill Top Restaurant and it was closed and wouldn’t open until 9:00AM. I was 25 minutes early. As one of the waitresses walked into the restaurant, I asked if bikers still met there on Sunday mornings. She said that the motorcyclists come only on Tuesday night for the “Bike Night.” Well so much for my plans. I said thanks and goodbye - then headed back to the town square, and the statue of Captain Otway Burns (Naval hero of the war of 1812). The square is very picturesque with the mountains in the background. Burnsville is a nice place to visit. Cindy and I have eaten lunch at Continued on page 22

the Garden Deli a few times. Good food and pleasant atmosphere. I got back onto Rt 19E heading toward Spruce Pine. After a few miles, I had to stop because of what I saw parked on the side of the road. I didn’t know it at the time but it was a beautiful 1929 Nash four-door – for sale for only $10,000. The outside has some surface rust but the interior looks perfect. I was surprised to see four-wheel brakes. Many of the cars of that vintage only had rear brakes. I also loved the “Wooden Wheels”. After the disappointment of the Hilltop Restaurant, this car made my day. After leaving the old Nash, I was thinking of how it would be to own it. I know it would be fun to just leave it the way it is and drive it. Of course, I’d have to stay off the interstates – not that it wouldn’t go highway speeds but it probably wouldn’t stop too good. It would still be fun! I followed Rt 19E until I turned right onto Rt 226. After a few miles, I stopped at the Mineral Museum. I was surprised to see that Yvonne was working again. I hadn’t seen her for months, but then I’d see her twice in three days. We had a pleasant chat, and then I got onto The Parkway to ride to Little Switzerland. I w a l k e d i nt o t h e L i t t l e Switzerland Trading Post and again, Bill wasn’t working. This time, I was the only customer so

I could talk to the other man who works there. His name is Craig and he’s the manager – Bill works for him. Craig owns the old BMW parked in front and has owned it since the ‘70’s. It’s a pretty rare piece of machinery. Craig and I had a very interesting talk. There was an article I wrote in Dashboards and Saddlebags about the Diamondback that he liked.
Craig is a very talented photographer with many of his pictures from around the world for sale in the Trading Post. He also likes to share his experiences with you – in other words, he’ll talk your ear off. It was very interesting – he’s had a very colorful life. When you go in, ask him about how he sold his old BMW. It’s a pretty funny story. I said my goodbyes and headed down “The Diamondback” (Rt 226A). I took my time and enjoyed the views. I followed it onto Rt 226 and all the way to Shelby.

f you have never been to downtown Valdese on a Friday night, any Friday night just picture “Happy Day’s” and swop Fonzie for an Elvis and you’ll know what to expect when you drive or ride to the heart of Valdese for this weekly event during the summer. Motorcycles fill the small lot in front of the diner while cars and trucks fill two large lots next door. A stage is set up in the big lot playing music, old and new along with some live music belted out by the man himself, Elvis. This is a great family destination for a Friday night or an entire afternoon. Myra’s is not just a Diner, a very unique antique store and an Italian restaurant like I’ve never seen before are right next door. Grab lunch at the diner, check out some antiques and enjoy the downtown, then finish with a great dinner at Myra’s Little Italy. At least, this is how I plan to spend my next visit to Valdese.

Continued from page 16 The banking on the track where the cars were mounted increased as it went up. There was a spot where people could feel what 30 degree banking was like to walk up. It was difficult. We continued to walk around. There were many old NASCAR artifacts along with the many vintage cars. Most of the driver’s names I remembered but there were a few that I didn’t. Every driver listed had a short bio about his (or hers) NASCAR career. We located the simulator. They wanted us to go take some practice laps before getting in the car but there was a line. We decided that we didn’t need the practice and signed up. When it was our turn to race, there were six other racers with us. It was a strange set-up. There were only two pedals in the car (gas and brake). The problem was that the gas was where the brake should be and the brake was where the clutch should be. When I was on the parade lap, I wrecked the guy in front of me because I pressed the gas instead of the brake. I quickly learned the locations. The race was short (a little over 5 minutes) and Danny won. He had everybody else at least a lap down. I came in 4th 2 laps down. Danny came out with a big smile. I would have done better but I got in three wrecks that I didn’t start. I can see now how
good drivers get caught up in the wrecks every week. There were displays where they showed actual production cars that were sold everyday to the public that were converted to racecars. That’s how the sport started but it’s definitely not that way now. Every racecar is built from the ground up to race. NASCAR stands for National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing. They should take out the words: “Stock Car”. We left the Hall and walked into the gift shop where they had clothes and collectables for almost every driver. Danny bought a few things and then we left. When we go back the next time, we’ll spend more time logging in with the “Hard Card” that we were given. It keeps track of everything you do so we won’t miss anything.
