Grab it with Both Hands! W
hile walking around the old courthouse in Morganton I passed this sign in the window of this old time looking storefront proclaiming $3.99 for a cheeseburger, fries and a drink. I thought either you’ll get what you pay for, or it would be a great story. Well, it’s a story. Jake’s Way Back Burgers on the Corner of S. Sterling and W. Meeting Street you’ll find a 50’s style burger joint that serves a burger that you will have to grab with both hands and bend over your plate, or you will be wearing some of the 13 free toppings you can add to your cheeseburger. Load that burger with mush-
rooms, grilled onions, and sweet peppers, all at no extra charge. A quick lunch, tasty, messy burger, crispy fries, all waiting for you at the Trailhead of Western NC. What a great place to start your adventure exploring Burke County. 160 South Sterling St Morganton, NC 28655 Phone: 828-438-6936 www.waybackburgers.com

ouring Joara, a European and Sports Car Tour is set for October 1, 2011. This is the second annual tour to raise funds for Exploring Joara Foundation a 501(c) 3 non-profit which supports the archaeology at Fort San Juan and Joara. Joara is the name of the Native American village where the Spanish Captain, Juan Pardo, built Fort San Juan in 1567 making this the earliest European settlement in the interior of the United States. The Tour will include Hwy 226 A, “The Diamondback” one of North Carolina’s most challenging roads. This trail is the route the Overmountain Men followed as they marched towards the Battle of Kings Mountain. In this piv-

otal battle, patriot backwoodsmen defeated a well-trained force of loyalists in an event Thomas Jefferson called the turning point in the War of Independence. On the tour you will visit Quaker Meadows in Morganton NC, patriot leader Colonel Charles McDowell’s home, where the Overmountain Men camped the night of September 30, 1780. Step back into the 18th century with living history exhibits and tours of the historic McDowell House during the annual Revolutionary War Week events. At the Joara stop, travel further back in time to the 16th century. Joara is the Native American village where Spanish Captain Juan Pardo built Fort San Juan in 1567. The first Touring Joara was a wonderful success with great cars, fun roads, interesting people, and beautiful weather. There were 59 cars registered on the tour

Cruising Jackson County I
f you’re planning to cruise Western North Carolina, why not head to the county that’s home to Western Carolina University? Beautiful Jackson County has a number of excellent cruising options in and around the towns of Sylva, Dillsboro, Cullowhee, Cashiers and Whittier. In fact, parts of this region found their way onto the big screen in the iconic movie, “Thunder Road,” filmed in WNC in the 1950s. A great base camp for dashboarders and saddlebaggers is the Gearhead Inn in Whittier. The inn bills itself as a “destination for the young and young-aheart who have a love affair with the open road.” The inn’s website – www.gearheadinn.com – directs guests to some of the better-known spots in Western North Carolina, namely Cherohala Skyway and the Tail of the Dragon. You can’t
20
go wrong with either of those. However, Jackson County is a good place to consider the roads less traveled. A great example is the southern-most section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This stretch of road, which can be picked up in Cherokee, borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There’s great cruising to be had as the Parkway climbs into the Balsam Mountains and routinely reaches heights upwards of 5,600 feet, including the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway – 6,047 feet on the shoulder of Richland Balsam. For a few years, this stretch
Dashboards and Saddlebags The Destination Magazine
of the Parkway was used for a grueling bicycle challenge called the Tour de Tuck bicycle, where riders bemoaned the cumulative elevation gain of 11,000 feet. After about 40 miles on the Parkway, turn right onto Hwy. 215 and go 3.4 miles to Explorer Road, also known as State Road 1756. Take a right on Explorer Road/ SR 1756 and enjoy the winding route for just over 10 miles to N.C. Highway 281. At that point, turn right on N.C. 281 and begin heading back toward civilization. N.C. 281 takes you past Bear Lake and Cedar Cliff Lake, two tranquil high-mountain lakes that are mostly undeveloped. Eventually, that road ends at N.C. Highway 107 in the Tuckasegee community. At that point, the less adventuresome can turn
right and weave their way northward along the Tuckasegee River and past Western Carolina University. Eventually, you reach the welcoming mountain town of Sylva. The town has a quintessential Main Street with the old courthouse perched high above, looking down on the cityscape. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and watering holes in downtown Sylva, and on Hwy. 107 out toward the university.
A good place for an evening of food, drinks and music is O’Malley’s Pub & Grill in Sylva. The place offers tasty eats, regular beer specials, plenty of TVs and an outdoor patio with live bluegrass, country and hard rock bands. For those riders and mototourists who did not head north on Hwy. 107, the southbound section of that road is a real treat, winding uphill to the popular vacation retreat of Cashiers. Just before entering Cashiers, the road closely borders Lake Glenville. At 3,500 feet in elevation, it is one of the highest lakes east of the Mississippi, and has been voted one of the 10 most beautiful lakes in America. Rolling into Cashiers, you come to the intersection of N.C. 107 and U.S. 64. Turning right on U.S. 64 West takes you on a gorgeous and curvy route to the town of Highlands. Along the way is the Rhodes Big View Overlook, where from mid October through early November folks gather each afternoon around 5:30 p.m. to watch the “Shadow of the Bear” phenomenon. As the sun sets behind Whiteside Mountain, it creates the shadow of a large bear that stalks the valley below. It’s a Continued on Page 30

S
ix years ago, if you sat down and indulged a smoky rack of pork ribs, or a melt in your mouth thick cut of New Your strip with a dark aromatic glass of high gravity beer you would have been in violation of North Carolina State law. Now thanks to “Pop the Cap” Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse is able serve the best beers available from around the world, or down the street. In the early days Duckworth’s Cheesesteakery led the cheesesteak revolution in the Charlotte area with the best authentic Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwiches, Cheez Wiz and all. Today, Duckworth’s Grill and Taphouse is one of the first to acknowledge that a fine crafted beer can complement food as well, if not better than a good wine. With as many styles of beer as their is wine try something different. You may prefer a bold beer with your steak fajitas, or a

Big Flavor in Little Switzerland P
erched at the head of the Diamondback is The Chalet Restaurant. Just off Just off the Blueridge Parkway on the mountainside overlooking Table Rock and Lake James. This would be a most ordinary restaurant if you were in the Swiss Alps! The Chalet Restaurant is part of the Switzerland Inn Resort. Resort is not officially in the marketing for The Switzerland Inn, but what would you call a facility with a hotel, a lodge, and suites with amenities such as a swimming pool, hot tub, and tennis courts? Along with

those amenities Switzerland Inn offers 2 galleries, a fitness center, a general store, an ice cream shoppe, a Christmas store, and has a concert hall on site. The Chalet Restaurant has 3 indoor dining rooms, and a richly decorated European bar called the Fowl Play Pub. In addition to the inside service. The Chalet offers additional seating with an outside dining area and bar. What you are looking at are some of the features on the lunch menu. The Chalet prepares lunch from 11:30 until two, so plan your arrival to coincide with

these hours or you will be very disappointed. You will not find any other food service like The Chalet this side of the Alps. One of the most popular entrees is the Three Salad Plate pictured in the upper left corner. As the name implies you indulge in chicken salad, shrimp salad, and lobster louis all presented with fresh picked berries on one plate. The freshly prepared chicken salad enjoys the same accompaniment with a selection of fresh in season berries. If you choose the Corned Beef Reuben Thinly sliced corned beef, piled high with sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese on grilled marble rye with thousand island dressing you may be staying for the evening! That is one tasty, filling sandwich. The lunch menu offers a healthy variety of offerings including smoked trout, frog legs, lobster louis cocktail and fried green tomatoes for appetizers. Sandwich made with ground beef, prime rib, blackened fish, lobster, and pulled pork. Sp e c i a lt y pl ate s i nclu d e rainbow trout, cold water cod,
Carolina pulled pork, or a half rack of ribs with sweet potato fries. Whet her you are on the parkway or cruising the foothills around Morganton or Marion, the Chalet is right up the road. If you stop in on a weekend, you will more than likely encounter one kind of mototourist rally or another. It’s like stumbling into your own private car, or motorcycle show when you walk the parking lot. If you have a group you won’t be disappointed if you recommend The Chalet Restaurant for your next run, the roads are “sprited” from any direction and the staff is very experienced with large groups. Just one last warning if you are planning on stopping in for a quick lunch, if you eat the Reuben, you’ll want to stay and get a room. unique experience, but get their early to find a parking spot. Once in Highlands, bear right to stay on U.S. 64 to Franklin. Along this route, you’ll pass several nice waterfalls, including the Lower and Upper Cullasaja Falls and also Bridal Veil Falls. In Franklin, there are plenty of things to see and do, or you can wrap up your day’s adventure by heading north on U.S. 23/441 back to the Whittier area. Another day in Jackson County might be spent meandering country roads to remote trout streams. The county is home to the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail, the only officially designated fly fishing trail in the nation. It takes anglers to 15 prime spots to catch brown, rainbow and brook trout, many of which are accessed via scenic two-lane routes. The local tourism authority provides free water-resistant maps to the fishing trail.
