hank you for picking up our eighth issue of Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine. I hope you are having as much fun going through the pages of our MotoTourist magazine as we are looking into new and unique destinations to publish. There are so many different things to do within a few hours drive. You can run up to Asheville on Saturday and stroll through the Grove Park Inn viewing the 19 th Annual National Gingerbread House Competition.™ Then Sunday you can take a spirited drive to the coast and take in the Holiday Lighting of the Battle Ship in Wilmington and return home fresh for Monday morning. Our focus is to find as many different destinations as we can nearby so you can take off on a whim and be able to enjoy a change in scenery or an escape from everything going on at home for a few hours. We don’t want you to feel as if you need a vacation to recover from the weekend!

Pick up a magazine, pick a destination, and get in your car or on your motorcycle and go! Enjoy the day and when you get back home don’t even think about cooking, stop off at one of our advertisers and let them prepare the perfect meal for the end of your excursion. November is a great month that is sure to offer something that will get you on the road to enjoy a new destination no matter what your passion is. For me, I’m gong to indulge in quite a few of my favorite things. Driving my own car on a road coarse at VIRginia International Raceway, riding my motorcycle to the Wheels Though Time Museum’s end of year celebration and bike raffle. And last but not least a Culinary Weekend in Highlands that the entire community participates in. Yes, November is a great month! – Andy

ur second annual trek to the Blue Ridge began at Flow BMW around 9:00 AM with an excellent brunch kindly provided by Jason’s Deli. As a diverse gathering of cars lined up outside, the main topic among the CruZers were the two events that had occurred the day before, the Euro Classica at Old Salem and the Grand Prix D’ Monaco Casino Night at Flow BMW. A brief review of the drive was conducted with pointers about staying together, obeying all traffic laws and a reminder that this was a scenic CruZ, not a race! Our escort from the W-S police department arrived just in time and we departed from our staging area with about 30 cars and over 60 participants. We discovered later that our escort had underestimated our numbers and just over 1/2 had made the left turn before he departed. Apparently, the ones left behind made up for lost time

as we arrived at Hanging Rock State park, our first stop, with all present and accounted for! The twists and turns of route 66 were a drivers delight with lots of gear changes and tight apexes.

Leaving HRSP our group consisting of everything from Maseratis to Miatas (BMW’s were the largest marque represented) snaked up Squirrel Spur to Meadows of the Dan and the Blue Ridge Parkway. A short sprint up the parkway, past the photogenic Mabry Mill, brought us to our final destination Chateau Morrisette Winery. The weather was perfect and even at these higher elevations all the convertibles remained topless as we arrived at the winery. Many CruZers enjoyed a wine tasting and tour while others seemed to just enjoy the mountain top views. Departing around 4:00 another trek Southward on the parkway to Orchard Gap brought us to some of the most exciting backroads in the Blue Ridge, plunging

Cradle of Forestry -Wally Wersching
A
fter thinking about places to go, I realized that I hadn’t been to the Cradle of Forestry in a couple years. I had passed by it on RT 276 but never stopped. I laid out my route and what I planned to do for the day and get back by around 2:00pm. I left home about 7:15am heading west on Rt 74. The sun was just coming over the horizon. It was going to be a beautiful late summer day. I followed it as it merged with I-26. I got off at Upward Road and followed it until I turned left onto Greenville Highway. After a mile or so, I turned right onto Little River Road and passed the Carl Sandburg Home. After a few miles, I turned left onto Berea Church Road (it’s a short cut to Kanuga Road). At the stop sign, I turned left onto Kanuga Road and followed it all the way to Rt 64 where I turned left. At the next light, I went straight onto Rt 276 and stopped at the ranger station/ visitor center. The lady rangers (or volunteers) were very friendly. I continued up Rt 276 which is a fun road to drive. The turns are sharp and the air was cool. The road surface is a little bumpy in spots but that all adds to the
excitement of the drive. Before I knew it, the Cradle of Forestry was on the right. I paid the $5.00 admission and parked. I was the only one there at the time. For those who never heard of the Cradle of Forestry, here a brief synopsis of it. In 1888, George Vanderbilt bought 2,000 acres of land south of Asheville, NC which he called “Biltmore”. The land was mismanaged when the farmers clear cut trees for lumber and firewood. The Europeans were practicing forestry which is using the forests wisely so that they will be there for generations to come. Vanderbilt hired Gifford Pinchot who started to manage Continued on page 20

his forests which expanded to 80,000 acres in 1895 which Vanderbilt called “Pisgah Forest”. Pinchot was replaced by Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck from Germany. Since America had no forestry schools, those who wanted to learn about the profession asked to volunteer under Dr. Schenck and in 1898, Dr. Schenck founded the Biltmore Forest School. During the 15 years the school operated, over 350 students practiced tree stewardship, lumbering and maintenance of productive woodlands. The site of The Cradle of Forestry

was actually the site of the old school which still has many of the original buildings. There are two trails in the Cradle of Forestry. I decided to walk the Biltmore Campus Trail which has all the old school buildings. The other trail – The Forest Festival Trail has the train and sawmill among many unusual trees. Many of the buildings have a small button that when pushed, a recording starts that tells all about the life at the school. It is very informative. I walked back to the main building to watch the new movie. I heard that a new movie was made last ye ar and I wanted to see it. I had seen the old movie a few times – it was done well. The new one was supposed to be much better. There

was a problem though. The ranger had not set up the movie to run and the volunteers were not authorized to mess with it. I’ll check it out the next time I’m in the area. The scenery from the inn is breathtaking. They also have a very good restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cindy and I ate there before and the food was great. Go to www.pisgahinn.com for more info. I continued heading north on The Parkway and enjoying the cool temps and overcast skies. My next stop was Craggy Gardens. I was glad to see that it wasn’t foggy like it sometimes is because I wanted to hike up to the peak and get some pictures. I drove by the visitor station and after going through the
tunnel, I turned left to go to the parking lot. I parked and started up the trail. I was glad that I wore my hiking boots because there were some rough sections of the trail. Once at the summit, it started to mist. The views were outstanding in every direction. It was almost like being on top of the world. The people at the visitor station looked like ants as they walked around. It was great! It took me a half hour to walk up to the summit and back down. I had to leave the top up on the Miata because it was wet. It wasn’t raining that bad. If I hadn’t stopped, I probably would have driven right through it. I continued on The Parkway and drove through some very wet roads. I must have just missed the heavy rain. I turned off at Rt 80 and it was dry so I dropped the top again. The drive down Rt 80 is always fun especially when there is no traffic. It was great. I made it all the way to Rt 70 with nobody slowing me down.

The Wheels Through Time Museum Remains in North Carolina for now J
ust moments before Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine went to press I had a chance to confirm with Dale and Matt Walksler that The Wheels Through Time Museum is going to stay in Maggie Valley for another season. Dale was busy welcoming guests from all over the country so we did not have time to chat long, but Dale will have an official statement on WheelsThroughTime.com by mid November. Why is this such a big deal? WTT is a treasure that North Carolina should fight to keep. The Wheels Through Time Museum is home to the world’s premier collection of rare American Vintage Motorcycles. This All-American motorcycle museum houses over 300 of America’s rarest and most historic classic motorcycles, with over 24 marques on display, including the likes of Harley-Davidson, Indian, Excelsior, Crocker, Henderson, and much more. Western North Carolina’s premier museum and tourism attraction features dozens of motorcycle-

related exhibits, ranging from board track racers, hillclimbing, and original paint machines to American Dirt Track racing, choppers and bobbers, and oneof-a-kind motorcycles. Founded by Dale Walksler in 1993, WTT has become an integral piece in discovering, maintaining, and preserving American motorcycle history. The collection houses tens of thousands of motorcycle pictures, historic memorabilia, and other motorcycle artifacts, and has been featured in hundreds of motorcycle publications.
