eafood at it’s best is not only a motto for Big Daddy’s, it’s a way of life. For 37 years they have been serving up some of the best seafood the area has to offer. “We hear customers say all the time that they have been at the beach all week but waited to get their seafood fix when they got back home,” explains owner Freddie Lancaster. It all started back in 1963 when Tommy Lancaster, Freddie’s grandfather, opened a small hangout for the local teens in Kure Beach. Everyone began to call him Big Daddy after his resemblance to Burl Ives who had starred in the hit movie Cat on a Hot Tin Roof a few years before. From there, it stuck. The hangout grew into a restaurant appropriately named Big Daddy’s. The restaurant moved to the Lake Norman area in 1974 becoming a favorite spot among a new set of locals. “We have regular customers that eat with us a least once a week,” says Lancaster. “We know about their family, birthdays, businesses; they are just as much apart of the restaurant as we are.” Ask any of these regulars and they will tell you all about Big Daddy’s. There is a reason they don’t miss their weekly visit. The

food can explain that. The fried seafood platters are sure to wreck your diet. Piled high with a mixture of lightly breaded seafood, a side of homemade slaw, and your choice of side, these entrees will please any taste buds that crave something from the sea. However, if you are not aiming to gain a few extra pounds in one sitting, they offer an array of healthier choices. The salad bar could make a meal out of itself if you choose, offering countless toppings and dressings. All of the choice steaks and broiled platters are popular as well. They also carry a catch of the day that varies from grilled Grouper to Mahi. If you aren’t in for a feast, the menu provides options for those with a lighter appetite also. Smaller portions of select dishes are available under the children’s and senior citizen’s section. Don’t worry though, there’s no age limit. If seafood isn’t something you appreciate, don’t write this one

off just yet. They have a menu of over 50 items, with many of those favorites of landlubbers. This includes Baby Back Ribs, Prime Rib, Chicken Alfredo, and so on. However, come in on a Monday night, and you won’t hear any talk of these items. Oysters are what’s on everyone lips, literally. You can get a peck (which is give or take 3 dozen) for the half peck price. Or if you have a lighter appetite or are just looking for a starter, the dozen is sold at the half-dozen price. Don’t be surprised if there is a wait for this 50 seat oyster bar on Monday nights. “We shuck them for you. All you have to do is eat!” Freddie says with a smile. He knows how to keep his customers coming back. Sit around and you’ll see him walking through the dining room
talking to his guests. People know him by name. They’ve practically grown up here. “We have people come in that have been coming in since they were kids. Now, they are bringing their kids in. We are pretty proud of that.” – N.L.

History Preservation Never Tasted So Good A

If you’ve ever been on the Parkway I’m sure you’ve seen that big red orchard building down the side of the mountain, I know I have and just kept on driving. Now that I’ve taken the time to stop in and see what Altapass Orchard is about, and what goes on inside it will be hard to ever just drive by again. It’s not just a working orchard, The Historic Orchard at Altapass is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian Heritage. Located on a hundred year old apple orchard on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Over the Mountain Trail, Altapass Orchard features mountain music, historical plays, storytelling hayrides, craft demonstrations, butter-

A Most Unusual Yet Official Morganton Trail Guide W
ant to learn about Wineries and Breweries, Art, History, and Hiking in Morganton? The regions’ tourism marketing arm has just released a new booklet of various trail themes in the area. This 16-page fold out brochure features breath-taking photography, helpful maps, and unique facts about Morganton and Burke County. Tagged as the “Trailhead of Western North Carolina” Morganton is home to so many exciting adventures in the Pisgah National Forest, Lake James, South Mountains and Catawba River. History lives on in Rockford A destination that is living history W
ho says you can’t go back in time? When you make the turn into this little town of Rockford they will prove you can! Since 1890 The Rockford General Store has been the center of activity in the village of Rockford. The store sits on the banks of the Yadkin River just over the Surry county line. Creaky wooden floors, old fashioned candy jars, fried apple pie, hoop cheese, and bottled soft drinks are just a few old time items you will discover at the Rockford General Store. Rockford was once the county seat of Surry County. Surry once encompassed Forsyth, Stokes, Yadkin, Davie and Rowan counties. With that came a booming, bustling town. The county seat was moved to Dobson, NC in 1850. Village of Rockford, established in 1789 has a rich history and many of the historic buildings are still standing. Some are in the process of being restored,

others either destroyed by fire or are waiting for their new beginning. The Antebellum house (ca. 1848) situated at the crest of more than 6 rolling acres, is the Historic Rockford Inn Bed and Breakfast. It will provide you with the simple pleasures and charm of country living while enjoying modern conveniences. One of the most visited buildings is the Rockford Methodist Church circa 1916. A lot was obtained from Dr. Daniel Holcomb and men from the community donated logs, lumber, and labor. The women served lunches at the building site during construction. The Women’s Society purchased the pews from the old Centenary Methodist Church on Liberty Street in Winston-Salem. In 1967, the Rockford Method-

ist Church was closed by the Methodist Conference. In 1989 the fresco “Come Unto Me” was finished by artist Tony Griffin. Today the church is always open for your to come in and tour. Railroad Section Foremans House circa 1883 is the 1st building on your right as you cross the tracks into town. When the railroad was being built the section of track from Winston-Salem to Wilkesboro the foreman for the railroad and his family stayed here. Today Yadkin River Adventures is located in the left hand side of this building, the right hand side is a private residence. For the sixth year, the sound of battle cries will ring out across Rockford during the Civil War Battle and Living History event. The reenactors, who travel from Surry, Stokes and Yadkin coun-
ties as well as from Virginia, will begin assembling in the town. They will camp out in preparation for the main event. There will be three battle reenactments which include infantry, cavalry and artillery. When not participating in the battle, the reenactors will be around town and in their encampment orchestrating skits and talking to visitors about life during the Civil War. Take the time to “Discover” Rockford, you’ll be glad you did!

erched at the head of the Diamondback is The Chalet Restaurant. Just off the Blueridge Parkway on the mountainside overlooking Table Rock and Lake James. This would be a most ordinary restaurant if you were in the Swiss Alps! The Chalet Restaurant is part of the Switzerland Inn Resort. Resort is not officially in the marketing for The Switzerland Inn, but what would you call a facility with a hotel, a lodge, and suites with amenities such as a swimming pool, hot tub, and tennis courts? Along with

One of the most popular entrees is the Three Salad Plate pictured in the upper left corner. As the name implies you indulge in chicken salad, shrimp salad, and lobster louis all presented with fresh picked berries on one plate. The freshly prepared chicken salad enjoys the same accompaniment with a selection of fresh in season berries. If you choose the Corned Beef Reuben, thinly sliced corned beef, piled high with sauerkraut, and Swiss cheese on grilled marble rye with thousand island dressing you may be staying for the evening! That is one tasty, filling sandwich. The lunch menu offers a healthy variety of offerings including smoked trout, frog legs, lobster louis cocktail and fried green tomatoes for appetizers. If you stop in on a weekend, you will more than likely encounter one kind of mototourist rally or another. It’s like stumbling into your own private car, or motorcycle show when you walk the parking lot. If you have a group you won’t be disappointed if you recommend The Chalet Restaurant for your next run, the roads are “sprited” from any direction and the staff is very experienced with large groups. Just one last warning if you are planning on stopping in for a quick lunch, if you eat the Reuben, you’ll want to stay and get a room.
