The last month of just thinking, dreaming of getting out of the house and on the road to new destinations. Once March hits, it’s practically summer! North Carolina is truly a treasure when it comes to diversity in destinations. My family is from Cooleemee North Carolina. I moved back to North Carolina nearly 20 years ago. I still get a kick from riding to the coast for a breakfast while enjoying the sunrise. Then up to the Yadkin Valley and savor lunch at one of the many vineyards in the region. To conclude the journey I proceed to the mountains for a fresh caught trout dinner and a warm, colorful sunset.

Helen is a little town is as German as you can get from the food to the beer and other spirits. Additionally, the Helen area is blessed with a number of excellent twisty roads and is a great way to start the year of Mini driving. The clubs usually base their lodging at a hotel called the Helendorf, where, last year, they had river side rooms for $79 and others for $59. They have an auction at the Troll Restaurant with Mini Stuff, NASCAR stuff and a lot more with all the monies going to the Speedway Childrens Charity. Lake James State Park T he park is located on N.C 126 In Burke and McDowell counties near Morganton and Marion It opens at 8A.M. The list of film credits for Lake James State Park, located in the foothills near Morganton, is short but A-list all the way. Film junkies can explore the more than 150 miles of shoreline and visit the location of Fort William Henry, the centerpiece setting for The Last of the Mohicans. Though little remains of the set today, the beauty of the area is just as it was in the film. Numerous devotees of the movie still seek out the foundation markings. Besides being the British stronghold of Colonel Munro (Maurice Roe’ves), this site was also the location of the French camp.

Other memorable scenes filmed here include the canoe escape led

by Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) and the sequence when Duncan (Steven Waddington) falls during the Massacre Valley scene. All

of the Mohicans locations are near the Haney’s Island/White Creek area of the park. If you’re lucky, members of the park staff will guide you to the spots used in the film. Lake James also appears in the Sean Connery/ Alec Baldwin thriller The Hunt for Red October, though just barely. It seems the executive producer was unhappy with the film’s ending, and a location was needed for quick reshoots. Lake James had the right look, so a two-day shoot was done here between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The lake may have been a good-luck charm for the sound crews of both films. Red October picked up an Oscar® for Best Sound Effects, while Mohicans won for Best Sound.

ilmed entirely in North Carolina, The Hunger Games movie locations included a dense forest where the arena that hosts the games themselves was created to an actual deserted mill town that was transformed into Katniss’ home, District 12.

Even a North Carolina sound stage was used for the futuristic sights and sounds of The Capitol, the controlling city of the post nuclear nation Panem. The Movie will be out March 23 rd and is the first in a trilogy. Who knows what the future holds for District 12. Well, OK, you can read the books and find out!

Mountain Retreat Offers Horseback Riding All Winter With Spectacular Views Year Around!

M ORGANTON, N.C. – Summertime isn’t the only time for folks to enjoy outdoor activities in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Po c o R hy t h m Mou nt ai n Retreat, located on Burkemont Mountain in southern Burke County, offers horseback rides to individuals and groups throughout the winter.

The ranch has access to more than 30 miles of trails on its property and in the adjacent South Mountains State Park.

Rides range in length from one to six hours. Each ride includes safety instruction and trail guides, and utilizes trail horses born on site and raised by ranch owner A.J. Hodge, a certified horse trainer.

“We have beautiful mountain trails,” says co-owner Juleigh Hodges. “The rides are through the mountains on logging roads.

They go into the woods and up to where you have great views.”

“We adjust our packages to suit what people want. We offer trail rides and hiking trails, and have cabin rentals, too,” says A.J.

The ranch sits at an elevation of 2,400 feet with panoramic vistas. On a clear day it is easy to see iconic Blue Ridge peaks like Table Rock, Mount Mitchell and Grandfather Mountain.

“It’s a specialty place – you don’t find many places that offer cabins and trail rides together, where you can stay and ride,” says Juleigh Hodges. “And we’re not really remote because Morganton is nearby, but you feel like you are remote.”

Trail ride prices start at $30 per person. Stay-and-ride packages begin at $149 per couple.

The Old Mill of Guilford T

he Old Mill of Guilford was founded in North Carolina on Beaver Creek in 1767 to grind grain for the early settlers of what is now Guilford County.

Today, the mill continues to produce allnatural, stone-ground, whole grain foods, just as it has for over 250 years.

The mill produces all natural corn meals and grits along with a wide range of mixes including: sweet potato and oat bran muffin mixes, gingerbread, Scottish scones, Scottish shortbread, and heidesand cookie mix (a German shortbread). Visit the Old Mill Store for these products and other fine foods and crafts from North Carolina.

The Old Mill of Guilford is a popular, scenic tourist attraction and has long been a favorite subject for artists and photographers. So, please make plans to stop by and visit. In 1767, before the colonists decided to seek independence from England, Daniel Dillon built a small tub mill in North Carolina on Beaver Creek, and

went into business grinding grain for the early settlers. The Earl of Granville had granted Dillon the tract of 552 acres on Reedy Fork and Beaver Creeks in 1755.

Rowan County later granted him a license to build the mill in 1764. Rowan County court minutes from January 10, 1764 read: “Ordered that Daniel Dillin have License to Build a Publick Grist Mill on the Reedy Fork of Haw River at the mouth of Beaver Creek.” The mill was located in what is now Guilford County, which was created out of Rowan County in 1771.

Legend has it that British troops seized the mill to grind grain for the soldiers prior to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781.

The original tub mill and dwelling on 175 acres was sold to Joel Sanders for $900 in 1808. In 1819, Sanders moved the mill 500 feet down stream and built a new dam across the creek, which increased the millpond to 10 acres.

The new mill was designed as a merchant corn and wheat mill with an overshot wheel to replace the small tub mill.

In 1913, the mill was purchased

by K. L. Hendrix who later converted the mill to a roller mill and replaced the water wheel with a turbine. In 1932, state highway 68 was built between the dam and the mill. To keep the mill in operation, the long overhead wooden flume, which carried water from the dam to the mill, was replaced by a 26” diameter steel pipe which ran under the new road. Clarence E. Bailes purchased the mill in 1954. Bailes removed the roller mill machinery and replaced the turbine with a 24’ x 4’ Fitz overshot water wheel which still operates today.

The Most Patriotic Coffee Shop in America W

hat once was P a t ’s G o u r met Coffee Shop, un k now ing ly b e came much more.

Not only a Coffee Shop but a “Living” Military Museum.

Richard made a point of greeting every veteran who came in the shop “Welcome Home”! Always having a great big smile and or even a hug. Over time, Pat’s became a gathering place for veterans of all ages and a collection of artifacts, slowly accumulated.

Richard’s is an incredible place of support, healing and camaraderie for veterans, their families and many members of the community. They have veterans of all ages and time periods from WWII to the current conflicts coming to the coffee shop, several of the veterans have even called it therapeutic.

Each Thursday, a traditional free coffee day, they often have gatherings of more than one hundred veterans of all ages. Saturday is a music day when veterans and professional musicians alike gather to play country, bluegrass, traditional old hymns, and patriotic music.

They sponsor the “Book of Honor,” which is signed by the veterans when they first visit the coffee shop and carries the names of around 9,000 veterans from all over the world.

With this signing, they are formally presented a two-row,

beaded keychain that represents the American Flag, which they served, and either the branch of service or conflict(s) they served in. This keychain is visible and recognized symbol in almost any part of the world in which the United States has a presence.

Sadly, in May of 2009, Richard died of complications from exposure to Agent Orange. He had spent many years of his life providing assistance and support to veterans. But, just months before he passed away he started forming a non-profit organization and he wanted it to be named “Welcome Home Veterans.” This nonprofit would oversee and keep Richard’s dream, to see that what he started grew and continue to recognize, serve, support, and honor those who gave so much.

After his death a number of Richard’s regular patrons were determined that his special legacy would not be lost.

Richard’s Coffee Shop is the only non-profit coffee shop and living military museum in the United States. Named in honor of Richard Warren, a U.S. Army, Vietnam combat pilot who flew a Huey attack helicopter, or “gunship”, with the callsign “Mustang 53” the man who spent the last 14 years of his life honoring and supporting America’s Veterans.

With the need to create a stateof-the-art media center to further exhibit the growing collection of artifacts. The goal is to provide both an exhibit and meeting resource for the many groups with which they are involved in.

Richard’s Coffee Shop, and with oversight from Welcome Home Veterans, Inc., opened on

July 4th, 2009 just down the street from the original site of Pat’s Coffee Shop, underwritten by the members of the non-profit’s Board and the generous contributions of so many others from around the world.

As a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization they have the following mission statement: “To ensure the memory of, and support to, those who serve through Welcome Home Veterans Living Military Museum at Richard’s Coffee Shop.”

With this mission statement we are continuing the legacy of Richard Warren’s love and respect for all of those who have served our country.

“We strive to carry forward the values of Honor, Respect, Duty and Love of country that is reflected by not only by the veterans but by a large part of the American people.”

The “Living” segment in their name consists of all of the veterans who gather on a daily basis to Continued on page 24

Continued From 23 share their memories and stories with each other and the community, through the outreach and school programs, and with anyone who values our heritage.

The “Military Museum” consists of artifacts donated to us by our patrons, by the very people who used, lived, worked with them. Many are donated by the families of veterans. Some are priceless.

The many awards that hang on their walls, such as “Beetle Bailey” presented and signed, the “Tuskegee Airmen” presented and signed, and the North Carolina State “Order of the Long Leaf Pine” (highest State Governors’ award), remind us of the value we represent and our duty to the American people.

Sadly, there is very little time left with most of the WWII and Korean veterans and a short time

left with the Vietnam veterans.

But gratefully, we see the current veterans and active duty members of the military picking up the torch of freedom in the stories they share when they come to the coffee shop and get signed into the “Book of Honor”.
