Dashboards # Saddlebags The Destination Magazine and
on to something! W
hat a great year it has been, and what a exciting start to 2012! The April Issue of Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine is our Anniversary Issue! Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine was started with one goal in mind. A desire to find new destinations. With our travels we used to make plans based on destinations we may have seen on TV or other big glossy statewide publications. We found that year after year we were traveling in the same circles over and over again. One trip we decided to do a little more exploring, getting a little further out groove. It was then we realized how sheltered we were, only relying on the major media for our travel plans. We learned that their are many great destinations out there that seem be just waiting for the MotoTourist to drop in and “discover” them. They just have not found that cost effective marketing tool to help them out. It costs a lot of money for a community or destination to advertise in a major publication or purchase air time in a major market. Some folks do the best
4
they can and advertise locally. In most small communities the residents are already spending their money locally. To bring in new money you must look at new markets. Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine is a Destination Guide to 1000’s of people each month. Our magazine is found in over 25 counties and is a proven draw. MotoTourists watch for Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine each month. People approach us at any of the dozens of events we attend and ask “is that the new issue?” If y ou a re a bu s i n e s s or destination trying to attract Mo t o To u r i s t s p l e a s e u s e Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine as your cost effective marketing tool. Live Simply Think Big
T
he All-America City of Reidsville’s slogan, “Live Simply. Think Big,” mirrors life in this beautiful historic small town. Incorporated in 1873, the City named after Governor David Settle Reid was built on a strong tobacco heritage. While tobacco no longer drives the economy today, its historic value can be seen throughout the community. In 2008, Reidsville was awarded the National Civic League’s coveted designation of “All-America City” for its humanitarian projects. In 2009, the City opened Market Square, a beautiful park and amphitheater located in the heart of downtown. This venue not only houses the local Farmer’s Market but also serves as an entertainment center for the local community and beyond. Each month April through September, national, local and regional artists can be found performing here. These events are designed to provide the community
with diverse entertainment not usually associated with a small city. This venue not only entertains our local community but also brings many people from outside the area into downtown. Once there, one can’t help but find the downtown a beautiful and unique place to shop. Specialty stores abound and the merchants take pride in what they offer. Reidsville is fast becoming the place for entrepreneurs to open their doors for business, and for folks to come “play”. The Reidsville Downtown Corporation (RDC) holds monthly events, such as the Cruise-In featuring classic cars and 50’s entertainment and nightly themed shopping events during holiday weekends or special local events. The RDC organizes the County’s largest festival, the Reidsville Downtown Homegrown Festival, the second weekend in October. Festival entertainment

offers a variety of artists from Bluegrass, Beach, Country, Motown and Rock to take the stage at Market Square. This event brings in over 200 vendors and 500 classic cars from across the Southeast. Truly a weekend of Homemade, Hometown and Homegrown Fun! The City also recognizes the importance of recreation and quality of life in the community. The Penn House, a gorgeous historic home built by Lucky Strike Cigarette inventor Charles Penn now owned by the City, is the backdrop to weddings and events every weekend and hosts functions for the business community. Lake Reidsville is another beautiful “playground” in Reidsville. This 725-acre lake offers, boating, skiing, camping and fantastic fishing, canoeing and bird watching. It also houses
a championship disc golf course, built in 2007 and designed by Russell Schwartz of Innova Disc Golf. The City is also home to nine neighborhood parks and several ball fields, including Jaycee Ballpark, which was recently revamped by the City. Greenway trails throughout the City offer our citizens a place to exercise and enjoy nature. Our senior citizens enjoy a facility certified as a “Center of Excellence” by the State, which provides them with fun and educational activities. All of this, along with our beautiful residential areas, quality housing, deeply rooted s ma l l tow n v a lu e s , s ma l l business opportunities, and caring citizens, shows that Reidsville “Lives Simply and Thinks Big”, making it a fantastic place to live, shop, stop and play.

A Bike Night You Can Bring Your Family To!
L
ancaster’s BBQ & Wings o n R i n e h a rdt R o a d i n Mooresville is a family restaurant with a reputation for great food served in a racing atmosphere. Sheet metal, posters, all sorts of racing memorabilia wall to wall to ceiling. Inside Lancaster’s it screams stock car! A few years back Jeff Lancaster built a two wheel shrine called the Hawg Trawgh. This cinder block addition built on the side of the main building has motorcycles hanging behind the bar, a covered outside seating area and a ton of bike parking. It’s a man cave! Every Wednesday the place to be is outside. Tables and chairs are set up in the parking lot looking over the outside stage. The Lancaster’s team bringing you your food and drink faster than you can count the L.E.D.’s on that bike next to you! Even a few muscle cars make it to the show, but they don’t get the good parking! Lancaster’s Bike Night has the feel of a back yard BBQ that’s been invaded by a bike show. Great food, music and people. You can’t help but have a great attitude at the Hawg Trawgh, it’s the place to celebrate down time with friends and family. Film Junkies Guide to North Carolina Randolph County Locations
R
andolph County’s claims to fame are pottery, exotic animals, racing, and a handful of movies. Four generations of NASCAR’s first family—the Petty family— hail from Level Cross, where Petty Enterprises and the Richard Petty Museum are based. Since they are central figures in the history of stock-car racing, their stories and talents are sought by filmmakers. The Petty drivers’ Randolph County film credits include The Petty Story, based on Wilmington author Bill Neely’s book Stand on it, and the documentary “Beyond the Glory,” which filmed at the Richard Petty Museum. Non-racecar productions have also been drawn to the rural charms of Randolph County. Thanks to the over 90 acclaimed potteries and the North Carolina Pottery Center in Seagrove, a slew of documentaries about noted potters has emerged in recent years. Among them is Crawdad Slip, which features fifthgeneration potter Sid Luck. Located just minutes away, Asheboro is home to the worldclass North Carolina Zoological Park, which boasts movie credits including “Healthy Pets, Healthy People.” Studio and independent productions, while few and far between, include the gangster movie Killers Three, which filmed in downtown Ramseur, Liberty, and Seagrove. The Dick Clark production stars Clark,
Robert Walker, Jr., and Merle Haggard, who stayed at the Day’s Inn (formerly the Holiday Inn) in Asheboro. Based on a Stephen King short story, Children of the Corn II Final Sacrifice made use of rural locations in Randolph County, including the eerie cornfield that became the film’s centerpiece. Hous e of C ards, st ar r i ng Kathleen Turner and Tommy Lee Jones, found an idyllic farmhouse and land in Trinity on which to build its unusual spiral staircase to the moon. Ten years later, the surprise hit horror flick of 2003, Cabin Fever, filmed at the Terrell Farm in Trinity. The establishing shots in Spike Lee’s He Got Game include aerial footage of rural Randolph County farms.

The Taste of Route 66
W
hen you cruise to Mac’s Speed Shop on your bike or in your bucket, you’ll catch the unmistakable smell of smoked meats nestled in grills until they are penetrated to perfection. You can’t help but feel a little nostalgic when you visit Mac’s. Comfortable outside seating to enjoy the weather and take in the mini cruise in that is a big part of the Mac’s experience. Inside it’s retro cool! Bikes, rods, a mix of flair and a ton of motor driven artwork from the 70’s to today. Family friendly all the way, it’s a place you can talk report cards with your kids or go over that TPS report with your co-workers. White collar, blue collar, no collar. The menu will take you on a tour down Route 66 and then some! Start the journey with Beer Can Chicken, then cruise down the road a way and discover St. Louis and Kansas Stye Ribs. Next, take it to Texas for what’s been called “the best brisket I’ve ever had,” by

Rick Browne, host of “Barbeque America.” Next take a little taste detour and try some Tex-Mex Tacos and Quesadillas with your choice of Pork, Brisket, Chicken or Blackened Fish. Finally taste the coast with sunny beaches and all that is healthy with a Veggie Burger or a Wrap. Now that you’ve devoured all the meat the “mother road” has to offer come home and wrap your hands around a Hand Pulled Pork Sandwich and pair it with one of the many Carolina Craft Brews featured at all the Mac’s Speed Shop Locations. Mac’s is a fun, energetic destination. Whether you are dropping in after work or stopping in after long day on the road. You’ll find sports on the televisions, music to keep the energy up, and the smells from the kitchen teasing you as car hop cute servers bring food and drink to the masses. Before you leave, give in and grab a dozen of Grilled Wings to go. Remember to double wrap them or you’ll mess up your upholstery or sauce your saddlebags on the way home!
