Project 543 #34

Project 543 Alamance Battleground Follow A Battle That Was A Preview Of The American Revolution I n the late 1700 s , a group of colonists disgruntled with British rule decided to revolt and overthrow the government. This wasn’t Washington and Jefferson, it was a group called the “Regulators.” And unlike their counterparts a few years later, these patriots were defeated in battle and several were hanged as traitors. However, their tactics would become a model for the American Revolution. Today, visitors can tour the site of this pre-Revolutionary War battle at the Alamance Battleground Historic Site in Burlington, see a home that is characteristic of Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com. The First Footin’ Five Miler T

he five mile course’s challenging terrain varies and includes plenty of hills, roots, rocks, grass, uneven surfaces, and gravel. Watch out for the possibility of mud in some areas. Runners will start near the Rural Hill Cabin site and will run the course once in a clockwise direction before doubling back and returning to the start. Historic Rural Hill’s Director of Education Zac Vinson is an avid trail and ultra runner who trains near-daily in and around Rural Hill. In designing this and other Rural Hill trail races, Vinson’s philosophy is to design a challenging and fast-paced run over unique and varied terrain that will be a fun and challenging introduction to trail running for those who are more accustomed to paved surfaces. The First Footin’ Five Miler is held in conjunction with the First Footin’ walk, a free family event held every year at Rural Hill as an observance of Hogmanay, or Scottish New Years. The walk is led by Rural Hill staff and circles around the property, ending at the cabin site with a free meal of soup, fresh bread, baked goods, and much more. For more information on the walk and its history, click here. Runners and their families are certainly welcome at this community celebration, and are encouraged to bring one or more non-perishable food items to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Rural Hill’s property dates back to 1765 when John Davidson, the son of Scottish Immigrants, first settled on land he had purchased from his father in law. Eventually John would become a Major in the Mecklenburg County Militia, sign the May 20, 1775 Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, and serve in the Cherokee Campaigns of the American Revolution. Rural Hill continued forward in history as one of the most profitable plantations in Mecklenburg County until

after the Civil War. At that point it transitioned to a family farm, remaining in the same Davidson family line until 1992, when the last surviving members of this line sold the property to Mecklenburg County. Today Rural Hill is one of the largest pieces of public property in the county and is managed by Historic Rural Hill, a nonprofit organization. Rural Hill continues to be utilized as a working farm, center for educational programming, and cultural events site.

Choose & Cut An Old Fashioned Family Tradition W TREE FACTS North Carolina ranks second in the nation in live Christmas tree production. Fraser Firs are native to the Southern Appalachian region. They are extremely well-adapted to the environmental conditions of Watauga County. Christmas trees are grown as a renewable crop, and therefore add more living trees to our planet. Unlike Christmas trees of the past, modern Christmas tree farms replant up to 3 tree seedlings for every tree that is harvested from their farm. Modern-day Christmas tree farms do not cut down trees in the forest and sell them to customers. By planting Christmas tree seedlings every year, farmers are helping to decrease the carbon footprint of their farms. Living Christmas trees will absorb and retain carbon from the atmosphere and utilize it for photosynthesis, producing sugars and carbohydrates for the trees to live off of. Christmas tree farms provide shelter, food, and habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including bears, deer, groundhogs, squirrels, turkey, quail, songbirds, insects, and microorganisms in the soil. Real Christmas trees, as opposed to artificial Christmas trees, are 100% biodegradable and can be recycled in many ways: chipped up for mulch, sunken in ponds to create fish habitat, placed in the backyard for use as a birdfeeder or using trees to stabilize sand dunes on coastal areas. Artificial Christmas trees are made overseas from petroleum-based products and non-recyclable PVC plastics. Some artificial trees are packaged with a pair of gloves, to protect customers from directly touching the Lead that artificial trees contain.

atauga County, known as the “Choose and Cut Capital”, is home to some of the most entertaining and scenic Choose and Cut farms across the region. Choose and Cut involves customers visiting a tree farm and roaming across tree-covered hillsides hunting the perfect tree to take home with them. Choose and Cut is the essential holiday family tradition, where young and old alike can enjoy a day on a real farm. Many farms offer hayrides, farm animals, cookies and cocoa, and even Christmas Shops where wreaths and roping are also available. Many families visit the same Choose and Cut farm year after year, establishing long-lasting friendships and cherished family traditions. Countless couples have chosen Choose and Cut as the occasion to ring in an engagement as well as the Christmas Season. Come bring your family to the Boone and Blowing Rock areas in Watauga County. Shop at unique mountain craft stores and visit classic destinations like Dan’l Boone Inn and Mast General Store. Come explore Watauga County and Choose and Cut farms…you’ll be glad you did!

the American Revolution many North Carolina people became strongly discontented with the way the provincial government was handling the colony’s affairs. However, their quarrel was not with the form of government or the colony’s laws but with abuses by government officials. Grievances affecting the daily lives of the colonists included excessive taxes, dishonest sheriffs, and illegal fees. Scarcity of money contributed to the state of unrest. Those living in the western part of the province were isolated and unsympathetic with the easterners and it was in those frontier counties that the War of the Regulation began. Minor clashes occurred until the spring of 1768, when an association of “Regulators” was formed. Wealthier colonists considered them to be a mob. The Regulators never had an outstanding leader, though several men were prominent in the movement; including James Hunter, Rednap Howell, William Butler, and Herman Husband. Husband, a Quaker and follower of Benjamin Franklin, circulated political pamphlets advocating peaceful reform.

Violent Resistance Discouraged over failing to secure justice through peaceful negotiations, the reformers took a more radical stand. Violence, lawlessness, and terrorism reigned. When the government retaliated against them, the Regulators defiantly refused to pay fees, terrorized those who administered the law, and disrupted court proceedings.

It fell to royal governor William Tryon to bring the backcountry revolt to a speedy conclusion. In March 1771, the governor’s council advised Tryon to call out the militia and march against the rebel farmers. Volunteers for the militia were mustered. When the expedition finally got under way, Gen. Hugh Waddell was ordered to approach Hillsborough by way of Salisbury, with Cape Fear and wester n militia at his command. Tryon and his army proceeded more directly toward Hillsborough. Waddell, with only 284 men, was challenged on his way by a large groups of Regulators. Since he was outnumbered, the general decided to turn back. On May 11, Governor Tryon and his forces left Hillsborough intending to rescue Waddell. After resting on the banks of Alamance Creek in the heart of Regulator country, Tryon gathered his army of approximately a thousand men. Five miles away, 2,000 Regulators had assembled.

The Battle of Alamance The battle began on May 16 after the Regulators rejected Tryon’s suggestion that they disperse peacefully. Lacking leadership, organization, and adequate arms and ammunition, the Regulators were no match for Tryon’s militia. Many Regulators fled, leaving their bolder comrades to fight on. The rebellion of the Regulators was crushed. Nine members of the king’s militia were killed and 61 wounded. The Regulator losses were much greater, though exact numbers are unknown. The Christmas Flotilla

F

ishing boats and pleasure craft electrically decorated with thousands of lights present a spectacular display on the Intracoastal Waterway. They cruise from Snow’s Cut to the Carolina Beach Boat Basin and back. The boats compete for prizes and add to the wonderful holiday spirit. This year’s Christmas flotilla will be on Saturday, December 1st, starting at 6pm. A panel of judges will be on hand to pick the winners. Every holiday season Pleasure Island turns into an Island of Lights. All events are family friendly and all are free with the exception of the fashion show and tour of homes fundraisers. For information about entering a boat call Kathie Winseck at the Checkered Church. (910) 458-021 www.islandoflights.org

Film Junkies Guide to North Carolina Biltmore Estate 1 Approach Road off us 25 in Asheville Biltmore is open daily except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The hours are 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. January though March and 8:30 A.M. to 5 P.M. April through December. An admission fee is charged. For information, call 800-624-1575 or 828-225-1333 or visit www.hiltmore.com

The first film shot at Biltmore was Tap Roots, starring Van Heflin and Susan Hayward. Almost a decade later, The Swan featured the future princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly,- Alec Guinness, playing a character named, ironically, Prince Albert, and Louis Jourdan. Biltmore staffers of that era were amused over a sequence in the movie in which a horse-drawn carriage pulls up and a bag is thrown into what is supposed to be a stable, but is actually a kitchen. Filming was dormant over the next couple of decades but came back strong with Being There, starring the brilliant Peter Sellers in the career-topping role of Chauncey. Exterior shots lovingly show the grandeur of Biltmore House, which is supposed to be a mansion outside Washington. Melvyn Douglas won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar®, and Shirley MacLaine and Jack Warden also appear. And yes, that’s the lagoon in Chance’s famous final “divine” scene. The 1980 s saw only the Don Knotts/Tim Conway vehicle The Private Eyes and the obscure A Breed Apart utilize the house and grounds, but the I 990s started a renaissance of first-rate productions, including

the Michael Caine/Jim Belushi comedy Mr. Destiny, Richie Rich, Best Picture Forrest Gump, My Fellow Americans, Patch Adams, and Hannihal Most of the areas utilized in films are open to the public. Staff members will be glad to point out various locations, including the following highlights, starting with the grounds. Film junkies will have to use their imaginations to re-create the mock-up of the White House built beside the lagoon for My Fellow Americans, starring Jack Lemmon and James Garner as expresidents on the run. The stone bridge over the bass pond on the way to the winery appears in Duncan’s trip to Albany early in The Last of the Mohicans. Remote areas of the grounds appear briefly in the montage of Forrest Gump (Best Actor Tom Hanks) running across America. In Patch Adams, Robin

Williams uses a run-down cabin on the estate as a medical clinic, this area is not accessible to the public. Moving inside, the tapestry gallery was the setting for the opening shot of Richie Rich, - observant film junkies will note the close-up of the portrait of George W. Vanderbilt hanging over the door to the library. Later, young Richie (Macaulay Culkin) rides his tricycle through the room. The opening scene in Hannibal, in which Verger (Gary Oldman) is offered Dr. Lecter’s mask, takes place in the beautiful, wood-paneled library next door, which contains Mr. Vanderbilt’s collection of 23,000 volumes. Other films using the library have included Mr. Destiny, Richie Rich, and Being There The banquet hall, the largest room in the house, is

where the Vanderbilts entertained and where their descendants continue to hold traditional Christmas parties. The room’s long banquet table invites a Citizen Kane moment, Richie Rich supplied a satirical twist in the scene with the telephones. Another favorite is the music room, converted to a hospital in Being There The billiard room is seen in The Private Eyes and Richie Rich And though it sports a red color scheme, Mr. Vanderbilt’s bedroom isn’t Richie’s bedroom. The staff also points out that there is not a McDonald’s on the site.

Credits Hannibal (2001); Patch Adams (1998); My Fellow Americans (1996); Forrest Gump (1994); Richie Rich (1994); The Last of the Mohicans (1992); Mr. Destiny (1990); A Breed Apart (1984); The Private Eyes (1980); Being There (1979); The Swan(1956); Tap Roots (1948); and others

15 prisoners; seven were hung later. Many Regulators moved on to other frontier areas beyond North Carolina. Those who stayed were offered pardons by the governor in exchange for pledging an oath of allegiance to the royal government. T h e Wa r o f t h e R e g u l a t i o n illustrates how dissatisfied much of the population was during the days before the American Revolution. The boldness displayed by reformers opposed to royal authority provided a lesson in the use of armed resistance, which patriots employed a few short years later in the American War for Independence.
