A Time To Remember T he power generated at Fontana made possible the accelerated production of the nuclear material needed for the secret Manhattan Project, at Oak Ridge,Tennessee. Uranium was needed to complete the atomic bomb, “Little Boy”, which was dropped over Hiroshima, bringing a tragic but quicker end to the war, saving many lives in the end.
We h o n o r t h i s c o n t r i b u t i o n with the creation of the “Proctor Revival”, an ongoing celebration of the self-reliant, self-sustainable lifestyle of the people of Western North Carolina prior to World War II with strong focus on honoring their great sacrifice to their country. The Proctor Revival Organization seeks to develop a site used to recapture this era depicting this historic time through dramatic interpretation with an ongoing drama which would be ”acted out” on site much like Historic Williamsburg, VA. The visitor would experience hands on activities with interactive learning opportunities having
to do with history, science and t h e e n v i ro n m e n t a s w e l l a s participation in drama, music and various other areas of awareness.
A celebration to honor the people of Western North Carolina who gave up their homes, land and way of life so that World War II could be won. Hosted by Fontana Village Resort, The Proctor Revival Organization and GREAT (Graham Revitalization Economic Action Team). As we wrap up a Time to Remember month, join us in the dance hall at Fontana Village Resort on May 25th, 2013 from 7pm – 9pm and bring the 50’s to life. The “Asheville Gentlemen” a 7 piece Swing Band will be performing. They will be joined by the Kennesaw State University Swing Dance Association on Sat. night. Follow the Ben Long Fresco Trail V isitors who follow the Ben Long Fresco Trail in Western North Carolina will find a touch of renaissance art in such unlikely places as a police station and bank building as well as a civic center, municipal auditorium and a few rural churches. Thanks to the effort of North Carolina native Ben Long IV, this unique trail showcases this unusual form of art to thousands of people who visit the frescoes each year for their religious significance and for their artistic merit. Frescoes are more common to Europe and Long spent many years learning from European masters to bring the craft back to his home. He created the first frescoes for free to assist two rural churches that were in need of attention. Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Jefferson is home to one of his most popular and controversial images,
Mary Great with Child. The Ben Long Fresco Trail now features 11 locations across seven counties in Western North Carolina and makes a perfect addition to an art tour along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
#35 Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

Crystal Bright & the Silver Hands will be on stage Friday, August 2. Crystal and her group are a Kaleidophrenic Cabaret. Corbie Hill of the” Independent Weekly” describes her music as “toeing a fascinating line, making for either an uncommonly dignified circus sideshow or a melodramatic, gorgeous Eastern European street performance. Think Tori Amos with Tom Waits’ sense of humor, or maybe a Tim Burton film with the steampunk quotient maxed. Their recent Muses and Bones is immersive and beguiling, alternating between reckless klezmer and enormous gothic ballads.”
Stan Stigall, “paying homage to the music that molded multiple generations and gave Detroit a claim to fame other than cars, The Legacy takes you back to the days of The Drifters, The Coasters, The Jacksons, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Temptations and so many more legendary icons. Featuring four very talented performers, you will transported back in time to one of the most influential periods of American Musical History.”

Film Junkies Guide to North Carolina Stokes County Locations Priddy’s General Store 2121 Shepherd Mill Road, Danbury (336-593-8796). The store is open from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M. Monday through Saturday.
T
ucked away in Danbury, a tiny hamlet near Hanging Rock State Park, is the centuryo l d P r i d d y ’s G e n e r a l S t o r e , where scenes were shot for the surprisingly successful horror flick Cabin Fever. First-time director Eli Roth hand-picked locations for the film. He found Priddy’s to be the perfect country store, thanks in part to its light yellow exterior and aged pine floors. Film junkies will recognize it in scenes that feature old man Cadwell, t h e e c c e n t r i c , g r a y - b e a rd e d storekeeper. The 70-something actor, Robert Harris, does not work at the store but is a Triad resident who impressed Roth with his first speaking role.
Cabin Fever revolves around five college friends who spend their vacation in a cabin deep in the woods. When one of them contracts a flesh-eating virus, their vacation takes a definite turn for the worse. The film stars James DeBello, Joey Kern, Jordan Ladd (daughter of Cheryl Ladd), and Cerina Vincent, who attended the East Coast premiere in Greensboro’s Carolina Theatre.
