Enjoy the Last Days of Summer in Valdese at the Waldensian Festival T
he 38th Annual Waldensian Festival will be held on August 9th and 10th, 2013 in Valdese, North Carolina. On the second Saturday of each August, Valdese holds its annual Waldensian Festival to commemorate the return of the Waldenses from exile in Switzerland to their native valleys in the Cottian Alps of Italy in 1689. This event, known as the Glorious Return, is celebrated all around the world by other Waldensian communities. Now, as with the first Valdese celebration held in 1976, we invite you to enjoy the rich heritage and magic of the 38th Annual Historic Valdese Waldensian Festival.
This year the Main Street will close on Friday, August 9th at 5:30pm to prepare for over a 150 antique and classic cars to park on the street for visitors to view. Children’s rides will be located across the street from the Valdese Fire Department and begin at 5pm. The stage area will be located on the corner of Roderet and Main Street and will showcase the Beach Music of Jim Quick and Coastline beginning promptly at 7:00pm. Quick and his band have been touring the Southeast for more than 15 years, playing nearly 300 shows per year and has released more than 11 albums including his newest, Down South. Originally introducing their music as the Coastline Band-a band of friends who played the Carolina Beach areathe group pushed Quick to the forefront and naturally transformed into Jim Quick & Coastline. Known for his all-out performances and deliberate, off –the-cuff wisecracks, Jim has been a gracious recipient of the Carolina Music Awards “Entertainer of the Year” nine times. The festival continues with over 170 food and craft vendors lining the streets for visitors to enjoy on Saturday, August 10th. Careful consideration Continued On Page 30

A Trip To The Taps 4,000 Feet Above Sea Level
VisitNC.com - Bill Russ
H
alf the fun of a road trip is getting there. Which means that the other half is being there. Both sides of the adage prove true on an excursion from Hickory to Lenoir and Blowing Rock, where folk art and folk heroes fill the space between beer stops.
Hickory delights in craftsmanship, and it shows in the city’s sites and beer. Stroll through Union Square, the delightful downtown hub, and artistically rendered benches will catch your eye: dogs with adopt-me eyes, jazzy figures, wild animals in “hidden picture” style. The Union Square seats are part of the citywide “Art on the Bench” project saluting the region’s furniture heritage. Stop to sample beer craftsmanship at the Olde Hickory Taproom before tracking more benches, including one at the Hickory Museum of Art, home to an innovative hands-on Southern folk art gallery. Hickory Boulevard’s famous “20 Miles of Furniture” leads to Lenoir, home to an extensive outdoor

sculpture collection. There, Howard Brewing celebrates its first birthday and celebrates with a intriguing releases: General Lenoir’s Old Ale, made from the Revolutionary War hero’s handwritten recipe. William Lenoir settled in Historic Happy Valley, which travelers can explore from the route to Blowing Rock. Follow blacksmith Dean Curfman’s highway markers along N.C. 268 past Fort Defiance (Lenoir’s house, built on the site of a frontier fort) into Daniel Boone and Tom Dooley territory. Download a music-filled podcast about the Tom Dula legend for the road, which takes you to Laura Foster’s grave (visible from the road) and Whippoorwill Academy & Village, which preserves Dula artifacts and an art collection depicting his life. Whippoorwill Academy also displays a replica of a cabin Daniel Boone shared with his wife and eight children in the 1760s. It includes rocks from the original chimney.

Dig For Jewels At The Nation’s Only Public Emerald Mine G
em mining is a popular activity for visitors to North Carolina and when it comes to emeralds, the Hiddenite area in Alexander County is unmatched. The largest and longest emeralds ever found in North America were found in the Hiddenite area, which is home to Emerald Hollow Mine, the only emerald mine in the United States open to the public for prospecting. Visitors can search for emeralds and more than 60 other types of gems at the Emerald Hollow. Most guests select from buckets filled at the mine and use sluicing to separate the gems. Emerald Hollow has three sluiceways where water washes over the soil as a filter. Visitors can also opt to prospect creek-side along the property’s 70 acres in specific areas where digging is permitted. Film Junkies Guide to North Carolina Lake Lure J
ohnny lifting Baby out of the water. Baby’s bridge. The resort staff dancing to Motown and blue-eyed soul. All of these are memorable moments from Dirty Dancing. The gorgeous setting for this iconic film from the 1980’s homage to the 1960’s—is still attracting film junkies in the new millennium. Beautiful Lake Lure has provided a backdrop for a few other films over the years, including Firestarter and A Breed Apart, but it will forever be viewed as Kellerman’s, the Catskills resort where the aptly nicknamed Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) comes of age, drawn by the swivel-hipped magnetism of Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). Film junkies can relive it all thanks to Lake Lure Tours, which has hosted over 200,000 passengers since 1994. The tour will take you past several locations, point out shots, and share a few stories from the film. However, don’t look for the Kellerman Hotel, which is actually the Mountain Lake Hotel in Pembroke, Virginia but that’s another book. All of the ballroom and dirty dancing scenes with Johnny and the hotel staff were done in the gym of the old Camp Chimney Rock, which has unfortunately been claimed by fire. Part of the floor, however, was used in the lobby of the Esmeralda Inn. But even though no buildings survive, the spirit of Dirty Dancing lives on. Don’t miss all the family-oriented

attractions offered at Lake Lure. You’ll have the time of your life.

Don’t Pass This Landmark A
ltapass Orchard is on the north side of Little Switzerland along the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you’ve ever been on the Parkway I’m sure you’ve seen that big red orchard building down the side of the mountain, I know I have and just kept on driving. Now that I’ve taken the time to stop in and see what Altapass Orchard is about, and what goes on inside it will be hard to ever just drive by again.
It’s not just a working orchard, The Historic Orchard at Altapass is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian Heritage. Located on a hundred year old apple orchard on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Over the Mountain Trail, Altapass Orchard features mountain music, historical plays, storytelling hayrides, craft demonstrations, butterfly and herb & wetlands gardens, monarch raising, amazing views and old apple trees May-Oct. If you are on a bike I hope you have some big saddlebags, you’ll find so many mountain treats your bags
