With the permanent settlement of the Lower Cape Fear in the 1720s by a group of wealthy South Carolina planters, a new agricultural staple was introduced into North Carolina—rice. Rice by this time had proved to be the “golden grain” of South Carolina as tobacco had earlier become Virginia’s “golden leaf.” By 1700, rice was established as a major crop for the colonists.

eld each year in Cashiers as the leaves begin to change in this beautiful mountain village nestled at 3,487 feet in elevation, this free event has grown tremendously since its inception in 2009.
This year’s festival expects to welcome more than 100 artisans and merchants scattered throughout the Village Green and Commons park, located directly in the center of Cashiers adjacent to the crossroads of Highways 64 and 107. Visitors will find unique handcrafted wood, pottery, jewelry and much more on display and available for purchase throughout the weekend. There will be plenty of food and drinks available in both parking lots behind the two stages of the park, which will be filled with live music throughout the weekend. Live music is scheduled Saturday & Sunday. All shows are free and open to the public. Most of these performers are local and regional acts, ranging in genre from singer/songwriters, to jazz, blues, Americana, bluegrass, rock, soul, funk. utter’s Rod Shop, Inc. is a professional builder of street rods, classics, customs, and muscle cars. A lifetime of experience in the hot rod industry has qualified the folks at Rutter’s to build specialty vehicles and advise the interested car builder regarding the best options for his/her car. The shop, owned by husband and wife team Bob and Patt Rutlidge of Hickory, North Carolina began as a part time business in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1998. Bob had a passion for designing and building street rods most of his life and so he had been working at night and on weekends building cars for others while working full time in logistics for a pharmaceutical company. Patt was working full time as a shipping and receiving supervisor for a package printing company when they both agreed that Bob’s desire to build quality vehicles professionally should become a reality. So they quit their jobs in the year 2000 to establish their business full time. Bob met with the customers and built their vehicles in the 2000 sq ft. shop located behind their house and Patt worked the administrative and marketing side of the business from her office in the home. Then due to zoning restrictions and the desire to market the business better the couple was prompted to
move the shop from their backyard to a 4000 square foot building in a commercial location. In 2008 the Rutlidges decided to relocate Rutter’s Rod Shop to the milder climate of Hickory, North Carolina initially operating out of a 4500 square foot building and then at the end of 2013 moving to a larger building of 7000 square feet, just around the corner from their previous location. After fourteen years in business professionally, Bob and Patt say that the new location in Hickory has been a positive change. They are able to not only offer partial builds involving repair and installation but they can also offer every aspect of complete builds involving design, disassembly, frame off building, plus body and paint. The combination of popular hot rod parts, A-1 installation and repair, top-notch metal and paint work, plus great customer service is certain to allow this builder of street rods, classics, customs, and muscle cars to reach a wider audience in today’s competitive market.

n the 1980s, the red wolf was declared extinct in the wild, but its howls can still be heard in only one untamed place on the entire planet. Visitors searching for a unique animal exper ience can go on a Red Wolf Howling Safari in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The 152,000-acre refuge in northeast North Carolina has successfully restored the critically endangered red wolves to the area through a captive breeding program. About 100 red wolves roam their native habitats in five northeastern North Carolina counties encompassing the refuge. ky Valley Zip Tours provides a high-flying adventure across an Appalachian mountainside. And despite its Blowing Rock address, the attraction is located only a few minutes from downtown Boone.
The c anopy tour operate s on a 140-acre site that was formerly Camp Sky Ranch. It involves nine zips, a controlled jump, and a walk across a 120-foot rope bridge. All this takes place in a rugged forest just three miles from Boone Mall. “We’re giving folks the chance to see the Appalachian environment in as natural a form as possible, while creating a little bit of excitement,” said general manager Jack Sharp Jr. “You’re in the trees, you’re in the woods, you’re in an old-growth forest. People don’t see that when they’re sight-seeing and walking around.” The tour consist of 10 ziplines totaling over 6500ft of cable, including “Big Mamma”. At just under 300ft high and over 1600ft long it’s one of the highest zipline on the east coast. he 2014 Rural Hill Amazing Maize Maze will begin Friday September 12 a nd w i l l b e open weekend s through November 2. The Maze is also available through the week by special reservation.
