Trump National Goes Classic

T

he 18th Annual Charlotte Antique & Classic Boat Show is from 10am-3pm on August 20, 2016. We will have a DJ from 11am-3pm. Trump National will have a snack bar set up selling hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks, soft drinks, beer, and wine. We should have 20 boats in the water and another 20 or so on land. The public will be able to view these boats up close and talk to the owners and restorers. Most of the boats on display will be from NC, SC, and GA but we will have boats from FL and VA also. We will have a very special race boat in attendance called Miss America IX. This is the first boat in histor y to break the 100mph barrier. This is one of the

rarest wood boats on the planet and is displayed in water. This boat is a 1930 Gar wood Harmsworth race boat. Back in the day the Harmsworth trophy was similar to “Americas Cup” with the US and England competing. This event is free to the public and will be a great representation of wood, classic fiberglass, and aluminum boats from the 1920’s through the 70’s. We expect about 10 vendors to include the local Coast Guard Auxiliary, and other marine related organizations. It is not too late for exhibitors and vendors to register. Registration closes at 10am on show day for vendors and boat owners. www.blueridgechapter.com

The Cedars Davidson

riving up to Tom and Sue’s beautiful home, I knew that I had stumbled upon something special. Their beautiful wrap around porch, expansive lawn, and cedar tress had me entranced from the moment I pulled into their driveway. After welcoming me into their home and giving me the grand tour, we began to talk about how Tom and Sue came to own their popular Davidson NC bed and breakfast.

allows them to make friends and learn people’s life stories for a living. Tom and Sue love Davidson, and bought their home specifically to create their ideal bed and breakfast. Davidson has a small-town atmosphere, and having Davidson College and the restaurant “Kindred” nearby make it a great place for a business. The couple chose Davidson because of the home’s close proximity to Main Street, the supportive community members, the abundance of cultural events that take place, and the great restaurant scene. The Cedars Davidson gets residents for lots of different reasons, sometimes because of an event the college is hosting, such as graduation or a high school student touring, mom’s and dad’s looking for a “staycation” who don’t want to be too far away from home, and sometimes they even get highway traffic from long-distance travelers going north.

After a fulfilling career in nursing, Sue decided to pursue a life-long passion and went to culinary school in Charlotte. Upon finishing, she realized that she did not want to be in the fast-paced environment of the restaurant industry, her thought when starting culinary school, but rather wanted to do something involving food that was more relaxed. The idea of a bed and breakfast came to Tom and Sue after staying at one on a vacation in the mountains. Sue noticed the food that was served, and realized that she could combine What makes The Cedars the two things she loves: taking care Davidson a unique bed and breakfast of people and cooking! Visit the Ava Gardner Museum

V

isitors to Smithfield can celebrate the legacy of Hollywood golden age film star Ava Gardner in the hometown museum dedicated to her life. Part of North Carolina’s rich film legacy, Gardner appeared in more than 50 movies including Night of the Iguana, The Killers and Show Boat, and was married to Frank Sinatra and Mickey Rooney spanning a 50-year career as a leading Hollywood actress. She was born and raised in Johnston County, a rural area of central North Carolina, until New York and Hollywood called her to fame. The museum tells the story of her life with an extensive collection of memorabilia, and each item has a personal connection to Ava or her family. More than 20,000 pieces of memorabilia are in the collection, including costumes like the dress from The Great Sinner (which showcases her 18-inch waist), movie posters

#106 and awards. The museum also showcases a mix of personal items, including a gold-plated derringer pistol given to her by John Huston to diffuse tension between Richard Burton and Liz Taylor during the filming of Night of the Iguana, and an engraved watch she gave to Sinatra.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.
