Annual Barbecue Festival Serves Up Family Fun
T
here’s nothing like sniffing the aroma, sharing the flavor, enjoying the taste and savoring every morsel of a barbecue sandwich with more than 100,000 other people at the same time… Sipping a drink… Talking… Laughing. Lexington is the place to be. Each year, on the 4th Saturday in October, the streets of Historic Uptown Lexington transform into a great big playground with food, entertainment, shopping and lots of family fun. It all begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs ‘til 6pm. Admission to the festival is free and plenty of parking is available. Shuttles
provide transportation service from satellite parking lots throughout the city. Amtrak trains, running between Raleigh and Charlotte, stop in Lexington in the morning and afternoon. The Piedmont and Carolinian reserve the festival day to make their only stop here during the year. Each year, the uptown area is filled with arts and crafts vendors, six entertainment stages, street performers, special attractions and festival food. Three large tents serve up thousands of pounds of barbecue sandwiches, freshly made from the festival’s official area restaurants. Continued On Page 20

Take A Bike Tour That Starts In The Mountains And Ends On The Coast
C
ycle North Carolina’s inaugural bicycle tour in 1999 treated participants to North Carolina’s first fully supported cross-state bike tour from Murphy in the mountains to Manteo on the coast. Over 500 riders participated in the first ride and the event has now grown to include more than 1,000 cyclists each year. Riders can enjoy shops, restaurants and local breweries near campsite or hotel stops along the way and can Cycle North Carolina 2016 The eighteenth annual ride is scheduled for a Banner Elk to Atlantic Beach route, from October 1 to October 8, 2016. With beautiful tourist stops along scenic back roads, the “Mountains to Coast” trek is the highlight of the year for many cyclists from across the nation. Cycle North Carolina will begin its full-service, cross-state ride on October 1st at the Tate-Evans Park in Banner Elk, and will arrive at the Atlantic Beach Circle on October 8th, with 1,100 bicyclists expected to participate.

take part in activities throughout the trip such as Cycle NC-hosted yoga classes and massages. Though the start and finish lines and overnight stops change, the unique experience of traversing North Carolina by bike remains a must-do for cycling enthusiasts.
Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.
