BROWNLIGHTS MOUNTAIN (AT YOUR OWN RISK)
Not too far outside of Morganton, North Carolina in the Pisgah National Forest, a mysterious light can sometimes be seen floating above the mountain or down in the valley below. This light was considered folklore or legend until Appalachian State University captured the light on two cameras in June, 2016. The light defies all scientific explanation. Come try to see it for yourself.

On The Water In Gaston County
W
ith everything from mirrorlike flatwater to Class III rapids, Gaston County, N.C., features a place to paddle for ever yone from novice to expert. Spring has arrived and summer’s not far behind, so stock your dry bag, strap down the kayaks and SUP boards, and head to the launch for a day on the water. Here are some of our favorite destinations. The Cramerton Riverside Park Kayak Launch. Seven well-marked public launches between Spencer Mountain and Cramerton make it easy to plan half-day and full-day paddles. Start your trip with a kayak or SUP board rental at Sun’s Up Scuba at the South Fork Village launch. Or stop off at the Village to refuel with a snack and craft brew at District 8 Beer Company. Take out at Goat Island for a taco or sandwich at local Tex-Mex favorite Doffer’s Canteen.
With three new launches in town, Cramerton Parks & Recreation is organizing group paddles throughout the summer. BYO boat or rent a boat at the Goat Island launch to Float the Fork. Pick up a latte and a scone along with your kayak rental at Floyd & Blackie’s and The Floating Goat Rentals just steps away from the launch. Catawba River The water is wide and calm on the Catawba River, providing some of Gaston’s best opportunities for kayak and SUP lessons, as well as guided trips. The Catawba River Paddle Club offers kayak and SUP board instruction and rentals out of Tailrace Marina with lessons provided by ACA-certified instructors. It also offers two-hour and full-day rentals, as well as membership and season-pass options for those who own their own boat. Guided group paddles start with orientation at the marina and a boat ride to the Continued On Page 29

Duckworth’s Huntersville Decompression Destination
E
veryone in the Lake Norman area is aware of the sudden manifestation of breweries. We are surrounded by a multitude of fantastic craf t beer ; hidden in business parks, upgrading to compounds, ser ving artisanal cer vesa with a garden full of cornhole games and picnic tables. However, we also live in a world where combining all luxuries and necessities is routine and expected. If my phone, email, daily step count, and Twitter can all be in one place, then why can’t my appetite have all of its needs met in one spot as well? At Duckworth’s, it can. As the wife of a craf t beer connoisseur and the daughter of a chef, I have very high standards when I drink and dine at any establishment. To clarify, I am a born and raised North Carolina girl, so when I say ‘high standards’ I mean there better be a beef hot dog and the BBQ should be on point. My husband and I call Duckworth’s our “Wednesday night” place. That always seems to be the day that we both could use a high gravity beer and some soul-satisfying comfort food. As much as we love our brewery expeditions, Duckworth’s has 112 beers on tap, with a vast
selection of local brews. We can experience all that craf t L ake Norman has to offer with only one stop, and get a taste of beer from across the entire country (not to mention a perfectly poured Irish Guinness). It may sound counterintuitive, but I like to wash my beer down with food, not the other way around. Some juicy, smoky Carolina BBQ and a great burger will always be a first choice and Duckworth’s never disappoints. Add on some of their signature Garlic Fries and your pallet will be so incredibly satisfied. Despite the fact that we call it our “ Wednesday Place” it’s also my favorite go-to spot for Sunday Panther ’s games. We live in a beer, wings, and football kind of town and Duckworth’s completely understands, and fully satisfies our colloquial needs. Maybe us North Carolinians are just stuck in our ways, but when we find a place we love, we love it for life. –Kara Werts 16609 Statesville Rd Huntersville, NC 28078
