Much More Than A Wonderland Of Lights!
I
t’s so lovely living in a lake town. There seems to be no end to the activities that can be enjoyed. Sailing, swimming, dockside restaurants, kayaking, bottle feeding baby kangaroos, engaging in a staring contest/battle of wits with an emu, counting the humps on a live camel… Since 2010, Zootastic Park has been bringing the exotic to the domestic city of Troutman and surrounding areas, giving residents a unique and magical way to spend an afternoon. Owners Scott and Kim Brown have been working with exotic animals for over thirty years,
and their passion comes through immensely in their dedication to this wild attraction. From the leaping lemurs to the speedy ostriches, every square inch of Zootastic is teaming with intrigue. Families will love having an outing where both parent and child can be equally entertained. It doesn’t matter how old you are, tigers will always be awesome. Speaking of stripes, take a good look at the zebras and see if you can figure out if they are black with white stripes,

or white with black stripes… It’s hard to tell. The coatimundi is my favorite little forager, and if you don’t know what a coatimundi is, I promise you will want to find out. Parents, do not let your kids skip the petting zoo. I mean, if you haven’t been licked by a goat, have you really had a childhood? The answer is no. In addition, what better setting could there be for a birthday party? It’s every kid’s dream to send out an invitation that contains the phrase “MY PARTY WILL HAVE A TIGER.” I can say from experience that one trip to Zootastic will never suffice. Watching all the different animals eat, play, sleep, and sunbath never becomes boring. Even so, the park is constantly updating, adding new furr y and feathered friends
along with new habitats. Every trip is a different kind of treat, and a few trips a year still doesn’t seem like enough. An Epic New Year’s Sunrise
R
ing in an epic New Year on Grandfather Mountain with the first sunrise of 2018. On Monday, Jan. 1, the mountain will host another New Year’s Sunrise event, offering guests the chance to start off their new year on a literal high note. Plus, attendees will be able to join in a community breakfast buffet with their fellow early risers. Sunrise is at 7:38am. January 1, 2018, and Grandfather ’s gates will open at 6:30am. Due to safety regulations, participants may only visit the Mile High Swinging Bridge area during the event. Guests are encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear heavy winter jackets, hats, gloves and rubbersoled shoes, as there may be slick surfaces on the mountain. The event may be cancelled upon short notice in case of inclement weather.
Admission to the New Year ’s sunrise opportunity and breakfast costs $20, in addition to general admission. Guests are free to remain in the park all day, but those who leave before 9:30am. will have their general admission charge refunded. Bridge Club members, who receive free admission to the mountain, will only pay $15 for the sunrise and breakfast. The event is open to no more than 40 participants, and registration is required. milestone occurs this winter in the North Carolina mountains. Beech Mountain Resort marks 50 years of skiing on the highest elevation slopes in eastern America. The resort brought a new vision to Southern skiing when it debuted in the winter of 1967-68. It was the only North Carolina resort built around an alpine village, and remains that way today. “Skiing in the South was just being developed and this was a unique facility at 5,506 feet in elevation with a Swiss Bavarian village. It exposed the Southeast market to something new,” says general manager Ryan Costin. “That continues to be one of our strongest assets – a layout where you can navigate the village and experience all the wintertime activities we have here.”

Watch An Acorn Drop To Celebrate New Year’s Eve
A
s the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh offers a wide variety of activities for visitors, many of which are free and pay tribute to the state’s role as one of the original 13 states calling for freedom. But when New Year ’s Eve rolls around, the city pays its biggest tribute to its nickname as the “City of the Oaks.” For more than 20 years, Raleigh has celebrated New Year ’s Eve and its nickname by dropping a giant acorn at the stroke of midnight as part of its First Night celebration, one of several Raleigh holiday events. Visitors can see the 10-foot-tall, 1,250-pound copper and steel acorn as well as several of the oak trees that contribute to the city ’s nickname year-round at its home in Moore Square Park. The acorn sculpture was commissioned for Raleigh’s bicentennial in 1992. It travels

he quiet little town of McAdenville, which lies along the South Fork River in Gaston County, N.C., comes alive in spectacular fashion each year as Christmas draws near. Almost overnight, the little town is transformed into “Christmas Town, USA.” In 1956, the McAdenville Men’s Club conceived the idea of using lights to decorate a few trees around the McAdenville Community Center. With the permission of town officials and Mr. W. J. Pharr, President of Pharr Yarns, nine trees were decorated the first year. Mrs. Pharr suggested the use of red, white and green lights, the traditional colors of Christmas. Later, at Mrs. Pharr’s suggestion, the trees around the lake were decorated and the manger scene became the focal point of the Christmas decorations. The reaction to these early efforts was so favorable that each year the number of decorated trees has been increased. By 2005, more than 375 trees were giving off a warm holiday glow to the town and surrounding area.

Their support, along with the continuing cooperation of company management and townspeople alike, has ensured that McAdenville will be a special place at a very special time of year when almost every home and evergreen tree proclaims the birth of Jesus. The more than 375 trees which are decorated range in height from 6 feet to more than 90 feet. Only live trees are used. As few as 500 lights and as many as 5,000 lights may be used on one tree. One of the favorite spots for viewers is the lake which is situated near the heart of town. More than 30 trees, ranging in size from 12 to 40 feet, ring the lake. The reflection of the lights in the water adds to the beauty of the scene. A fountain, located in the center of the lake,

jets water 75 feet into the air. Lights shining on the fountain go through a sequence of red, green, blue and amber about once every ten seconds. Also adjacent to the lake is the historic bell tower that has served as a focal point for the Town of McAdenville since the establishment of McAden Mills in the early 1880’s. In 2010, this historic bell tower was restored to its former prominence. The new chimes welcome visitors with carols throughout the Christmas light season as well as play special hymns and songs to mark each holiday season, national holidays and play during special remembrances - such as a tribute each year to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Except for two years, 1973 and 1974, the lights have dazzled and delighted the eyes and hearts of local citizens and millions of visitors. In 1973 and 1974 the country was in the midst of an energy crisis, and the town remained dark in response to a plea for energy conservation from the President.
