New Hotels Make It Easier To Escape To Hendersonville

H

endersonville is emerging as the next great getaway in the North Carolina mountains, and a slate of new hotels makes it easier to plan a visit. Three hotels have opened within the last year, with a fourth set to come online this month. The most recent property to open its doors is the upscale Holiday Inn Express & Suites. The Holiday Inn Express opened this past summer with 85 guest rooms and suites. Its location off Interstate 26 provides convenient access to downtown Hendersonville, as well as area wineries, breweries and cideries along the Cheers! Trail. “It’s a beautiful property designed with millennial travelers in mind with more open spaces and social areas, and better connectivity,” Henderson County tourism director Beth Carden said of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. “The colors are more modern, too.” Earlier in 2017, Cascades Mountain Resort opened with 100 rooms nestled around a giant indoor

pool facility, while the 114-room Wingate by Wyndham debuted just north of Hendersonville near the Asheville Airport. The recent flurry of openings will conclude this month with a new 84-room Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott. “With our breweries, cideries, outdoor activities and the Flat Rock Playhouse, there is so much to offer here. The biggest concern we’ve had is finding enough rooms,” Carden said. “It has been nine years since a hotel opened in Hendersonville. These new hotels will really make a difference.” The Holiday Inn Express & Suites is the second local hotel owned by Ty and June Rhodes. The Rhodes also own the Quality Inn across the street from their new hotel. “They are ver y supportive of tourism here and part of the reason why we’ve grown as a tourist destination,” Carden said. hat a curious name, wouldn’t you agree? In fact, even the names of the beers have an interesting twist I can’t quite figure out, but we’ll touch on that later.

Two cousins, David & Stuart are responsible for bringing this “community hub” to the Winston-Salem community. When they were kids they would hike and fish in the Blue Ridge Mountains close to the area of one of the biggest fiddle festivals T h i s b e a u t i f u l l y r e f i n i s h e d in the world. Now on their new tobacco Warehouse gives a nod to adventure the two wanted a name the historic roots of the community, that represents what they enjoy. most of what you come across in the taproom has been reclaimed, Fiddlin’ Fish is much more refurbished and refreshed, for such than a taproom for tasting a great a large space it feels “cozy” when beer brewed on site, it is a place to you walk in. meet with your friends, enjoy social gatherings and make new friends. A special treat this month is a beer and chocolate pairing for Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 9th with Black Mountain Chocolates. Another great match up is the pairing of great beer and sports entertainment with the Carolina Thunderbirds Hockey Team. Yes the newest brewery is the official beer sponsor of Winston-Salem’s newest sports franchise.

So, we know where Fiddlin’ Fish comes from. The names of the beers produced also reference local places or history. But how they tie together confuses me. Hike Through A Graveyard That Has No Graves

D

on’t be fooled by the somber name. Graveyard Fields, the location for one of Asheville’s favorite hikes off the Blue Ridge Parkway, is a prime spot for hiking, camping, waterfalls, fall color and summer blueberries. How the area got its name depends on whom you ask. One theor y explains a time when an incredible windstor m blew down hundreds of the spr uce and fir trees that originally grew there, leaving uptur ned roots that resembled gravestones in a graveyard. The other is a tale of extensive logging, leaving stumps of cut trees to become overgrown with moss, resembling an overgrown graveyard. However it happened, a catastrophic fire later consumed the area, destroying the “graveyard” and sterilizing the soil. To this day, plant life struggles as it slowly heals from the fire. Don’t let

#186 that deter you from the excellent trails nearby. You can travel to see two major waterfalls, walk over Graveyard Ridge and get a taste of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail for adventurous day or overnight hikes.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com
