Hendersonville Restaurant Week Showcases Flavorful Culinary Scene

H

endersonville continues to impress Blue Ridge travelers with its evolving culinar y scene. Downtown alone is home to 25 independent restaurants.

The lineup of restaurants includes a variety of eateries, ranging from elegant fine dining to upscale casual to tasty pubs, plus a food truck at a cidery.

This month, Hendersonville joins the ranks of other metropolitan areas by introducing its own Restaurant Week. From March 15 to March 24, restaurants throughout Henderson County will offer multi-course prix fixe lunch and dinner menus that showcase the quality and originality coming from area kitchens.

Postero, a must-visit restaurant on Main Street, is known for its open kitchen and fresh take on American classics made from local ingredients and served in an upscale setting. Never Blue is one of the more creative restaurants participating, with its internationally influenced tapas-style menu and great cocktails.

“The dining scene in Hendersonville is growing, so this is the restaurants’ time to shine,” says organizer Laura Huff. “It’s a great way for restaurants to share favorite dishes or new things they’re doing.”

Newcomer Brooks Tavern, which opened in downtown Hendersonville this past fall, will show off its friendly Cheers-like atmosphere and hearty bar fare.

We do banquets and buffets, wine dinners and cooking classes.” Bold Rock Hard Cider in Mills River will ser ve diners from its on-site food truck specializing in barbecue. The food truck is one of the newest additions to the tasting room, which provides cider tastings and tours, along with a regular schedule of live music.

love visiting small towns, looking for cute shops, strolling down the cobblestone sidewalks while admiring the historical architecture. Not to mention looking for a great place to eat. While exploring Davidson we came upon Restaurant X. With a mysterious name like that we just had to check it out. As we went into this cozy bistro with its warm welcoming atmosphere, I thought such a charming eclectic little place. We were further impressed to find out from our server that our food was made to order with all fresh ingredients, nothing pre-made. Checking out the menu it was a hard decision to choose between all of the entrees but narrowed it down to two, the Seared Ahi Tuna over soba noodles with thai peanut salsa or the New Zealand Lamb Chops

with fresh sauteed garlic spinach and mushroom sauce. Lucky for us it happened to be half price wine Wednesday so enjoying a bottle with dinner seemed all too appropriate. The food was fantastic, definitely a five star meal. I had the chance to speak to the owner and also the chef Nazira. I found out her back ground had her in Montreal and France in the restaurant industry and it shows. Restaurant X has been in Davidson for nine years ser ving American and International cuisine, I’m so glad we went & I look forward to our next trip.

ate night with my love! Girls night out! Anytime is a good time to go out to dinner... right? I must say I was extremely impressed the first time I went to Zaika Indian Cuisine restaurant in Mooresville. The aroma was exquisite, the atmosphere was very welcoming, the decor is done in warm rich tones and the ambiance is just right for all occasions. The staff was impeccable, as the young man shared the specials he made a few recommendations and a couple of dishes that were from his region of the countr y. When

the meal arrived I was amazed, the Lamb Saag is lamb sauteed with creamed spinach and ginger in lightly seasoned herbs and spices. Magnificent! It’s like a true adventure going to Zaika and tr ying a new dish with the complexity of all the different herbs and spices. Not to mention at lunch they have the buffet bar open and your able to indulge in so many different fabulous foods, a great way to pick a new favorite dish. Elkin’s Reeves Theater Given New Life as Music Venue & Café

A

fter a four-year restoration, The Reeves Theater in downtown Elkin is now open as a music venue and cafe. The theater’s grand reopening occurred in late December.

The Reeves originally opened in downtown Elkin as a 700-seat movie theater in 1941. Inside, the original tile floor welcomes visitors into the lobby café, which includes bistro tables and a bar serving local wine and beer. Chef Leanna Freeman, a Surry County native, oversees the café that is open Monday through Saturday.

Chef Leanna chooses organic, fresh and home made when she can for all her ingredients. From the home made crust, hydroponic tomatoes and eggs from just down the road in the tomato quiche, to making her own corned beef for her Reuben that substitutes pickled cabbage instead of sauerkraut. Surry Sonker Trail Showcases A Tasty Confection

T

he Surry Sonker Trail is a confectionary trail that showcases a heritage food passed down from generation to generation in Surry County in N.C.’s Yadkin Valley.

“The dumplings sit on top of the fruit,” says Flack. “When you cut into the dumplings they are like a biscuit inside – fluffy and soft with the flavor of the fruit.”

The trail leads visitors to eight places that serve sonker on their menu, which begs the question: what exactly is this authentic Southern delicacy?

In addition to Roxxi & Lulu’s Bakery and Rockford General Store, there are six more eateries on the trail. They are: The Living Room Coffeehouse in Pilot Mountain, Putters Patio & Grill in Dobson, Southern On Main in Elkin, Old North State Winery in Mount Airy, Miss Angel’s Heavenly Pies in Mount Airy, and Anchored Bakery, also in Mount Airy.

Sonker is similar to a pot pie or cobbler. It comes about by blending fruit and unshaped dough that is sweetened with sugar, molasses, or other secret ingredients. Catch The Elusive Bigfoot On His Stomping Grounds

I

n 1958, what turned out to be a hoax in California expedited the legend of Bigfoot across the United States. Since then, there have been rumors about Bigfoot sightings in Uwharrie National Forest. But could it be true? The term “sasquatch” was originally coined by a group of Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest and outdates even the settlement of the British. It typically describes a 6- to 8-foot-tall creature with a pronounced brow, covered in brown or red hair with enormous feet. The stor y says that when word of North Carolina barbeque began traveling west, Bigfoot headed east. Bigfoot has been sighted now and again across the country, but one of the creatures has never truly been revealed. In April 2017, the “Uwharrie Edition Jeep” was unveiled, named for the Uwharrie Off Road Training Center

as well as the looseness and fun the forest exudes. Since then, visitors to Uwharrie National Forest say they’ve seen signs of a sasquatch-like creature lurking. Could this offroader be what brings Bigfoot back on-road and out from under cover?

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com
