New Trail Showcases Secluded Mountain Lake In Burke County

A

scenic hiking and biking trail has opened along the rim of one of the most picturesque lakes in Western North Carolina. Fonta Flora State Trail debuted this winter along the northern expanses of Lake James near Morganton in Burke County. Two sections of trail are currently open and total 10 miles. Future trail will be added in sections to eventually loop the lake by 2023. The trail was conceived as a recreational offering for people of all ages and abilities. It is rated easy to moderate in difficulty with an average grade of five percent. “Some sections have 10 percent grade where the terrain doesn’t allow us to do anything differently, but really it’s supposed to be a gentle, rolling trail for everybody to use – wide and free of rocks and roots,” says Shane Prisby, operations manager for Burke County Community Development. Burke County began discussing the trail in the mid 2000s. When Scott Carpenter became planning director in 2012, he embraced the idea and was able to get Duke Energy involved through the relicensing process for Duke Energy ’s rights to produce hydroelectric power from the lake.

Photo Amy Swanson

The trail’s design philosophy is to showcase the natural beauty of Lake James with as many long-range vistas of the lake as possible. Hikers and cyclists wishing to use the two existing trail sections have options. A seven-mile stretch of the trail traverses the lake’s north side from one end at the Linville Boat Access Trailhead to the other end at the Harris Whisnant Trailhead. Parking is available at both spots. Another option to access the seven-mile stretch is the County Park Trailhead at the intersection of Fish Hatchery Road and NC Hwy. 126. That trailhead is easily identifiable by a giant iron tree marking the entrance to the Fonta Flora County Park, which is cur rently under construction. From the County Park Trailhead, folks can also access a three-mile connector to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. That connector was built as part of this project. For more details, go to www. BurkeNC.org and click on the Community Development tab.

Just Down The Road Yet Worlds Apart

L

ocated just west of Charlotte, Gaston County is a very accessible destination to visit. Four breweries reside in Gaston County. Each is only about a 10 minute drive, yet they are worlds apart. Ole Dallas Brewery is in, well Dallas and is the most rustic of the four. Located on the site of an old scrap yard. What sets this brewery apart from others is the emphasis on live music. With the large stage and great sound system Ole Dallas is becoming a regular stop for some of the finest musicians in the area. Even though the brewery is huge it’s easy to drive right by it. So look for the tiny water tower or the water cooler on steroids (I don’t know which it is) and turn down that dirt road, you won’t miss it! Next stop was Cavendish Brewing Company in the Gateway to Gastonia in an old Dodge Dealership. Cavendish steps outside the box and brings with it quirky events and Old World Beers. Would you not call an event for the release of the latest Star Wars Movie “Brew Wars: The Thirst Awakens” or a Game of Thrones event called “Winter is Coming” a little quirky? The majority of beers available are uncommon beers here in the “New World.” German, Czech and English recipes rule the taps here. Down the road in Belmont is Rivermen Brewing Company, the

12

only pub brewery in Belmont. It’s housed in an old mill with a big emphasis on conservation. Anything that could be used from the old mill site was. Large indoor and outdoor eating area and 20 rotating taps. Rivermen brings the feel of a big city brewery to historic Belmont. Around the bend and down by the Catawba River in Belmont is York Chester Brewing Company. An true nano brewery open to the public since October 2016. It’s in a former Dye Mill with tons of nooks for hosting events and music indoors. Outside is a deck and fire pit to enjoy a pint of a truly handcrafted beer and enjoy the river. Gaston County offers visitors a variety of attractions to enhance your trip including museums, botanical gardens, extreme sports, hiking, dining and entertainment parks, art and history and more. www.gogaston.org

Breweries & Bands On The Bay

T

he Kilted Buffalo is a gem, an Emerald in fact among pubs. Two locations have been serving the community for years in the Lake Norman region. This neighborhood Irish pub is the best place ever to enjoy some relaxation time while visiting Langtree or Birkdale Village. Bonus! The Kilted Buffalo is also a men’s salon. Enjoy a haircut, hot towel, pint and a shave while watching sports on the big screens. As I mentioned the Kilted Buffalo has been serving the community for years, I’m not just referring to the camaraderie and hair cuts. The Kilted Buffalo and Sun Up Café are putting on the second Lakefront Hops Fest. The only free craft beer festival on the shores of Lake Norman. The beneficiaries of this awesome event are The Ace & TJ Grin Kids Foundation with this festival. Spring date is Saturday April 28th, from 2-8pm, over 14 local breweries all pouring 3 beers each so that is over 40 craft beers on hand! A cider and a wine tent will also be on site. Food vendors, a hand rolled cigar tent, two great bands and a kids area that includes, bounce houses, carnival games will also be on the bay. E v e n t s a r e s c h e d u l e d a t seven venues across the three-day weekend. The venues include three cideries (Appalachian Ridge, Bold Rock and Flat Rock Ciderworks) and three vineyards (Burntshirt, Point Lookout and Saint Paul). Also hosting events is Saint Paul at Flat Rock, a new tasting room/cafe founded by Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards in the historic Village of Flat Rock. “The goal is to have visitors experience more than just a street festival. We want them to see our orchards, vineyards and farm country during apple blossom season,” said Michael Ar rowood, event coordinator for Henderson County Tourism. “Come enjoy food pairings and tastings, have conversations with cider and wine makers, and discover beautiful settings where these products are made.” More than three dozen events allow guests to tour cideries, hike or mountain bike through orchards,

This Historic Cotton Mill Has What You Really, Really Want

I

’m not one to write in platitudes, but it’s important to say that there is a time and a place for everything. Time is less imperative, but I agree that every event has an appropriate setting. Having spent nearly 30 years in Lake Norman, I have cultivated quite a list of my favorite places. Like this magazine, I love to tell people where to go. If you need a recommendation for the perfect weekday lunch spot, or somewhere to throw a few back while yelling unashamedly at a Panther’s game on the tv, or a restaurant with ambiance for a romantic occasion, I would have an answer. In fact, I would give you the same answer for all three; “you should go to Brickhouse Tavern.” It’s prime location in the historic Davidson Cotton Mill sets up both the restaurant and the tavern with a combination of rustic charm and a contemporar y vibe. Yes,

the restaurant and the tavern are separate sections, but with the same menu so you can pick a perch based on your mood. Sometimes you politely nibble a Greek salad while selecting mutual funds, and other times you get to cheer the Tarheels to victory with a draft beer in one hand and Buffalo Wing sauce all over the other. I have done both. I’ve also enjoyed a “girl’s night” over an ACME veggie pizza, had a couple glasses of white wine on the patio on the first warm Spring day, and demanded an impromptu date night because we were both craving a Blue Ridge Burger. The name of the establishment isn’t just clever, it’s apt. Brickhouse Tavern is famous all over the area for its pizza that is baked to perfection in their own brick oven and made with the freshest ingredients. So, you can choose to be in the restaurant, the bar, on the patio, or in Italy, all under the same roof.
