n the Western North Carolina town of Hendersonville, where craftsmen have drawn inspiration from the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains for centuries, a new era has emerged of handmade, locally sourced products. Nowadays, breweries, hard cideries, and wineries produce smallbatch beverages prized for their quality and originality. The easiest way to find these thirst-quenching treasures is via the Cheers! Trail, which connects 11 different craft beverage destinations throughout Henderson County. There are six breweries, three cideries, and two wineries. Henderson County is a longtime leader in apple production, growing the most apples in North Carolina. This abundance makes a natural home for the emerging hard cider market and three cideries produce a variety of styles.
Six breweries, from local standouts to a nationally known label, create a well-rounded beer scene. Sierra Nevada’s state-of-theart brewery is a mecca for craft beer. Take a tour, sip a sampler paddle and don’t miss the back patio of the brewery’s East Coast headquarters just outside Hendersonville, while Sanctuary Brewing serves customers in the heart of downtown with live music. Sanctuary is pet-friendly with a commitment to pet rescue. Southern Appalachian Brewery and Triskellion Brewing Company have spearheaded a renaissance of Hendersonville’s Depot District. Blue Ghost Brewing is gaining notice as a popular small-batch brewery with a focus on sustainability.
Flat Rock Ciderworks operates on Hendersonville’s popular Main Street, while Bold Rock Hard Cider’s large production facility and tasting room in rural Mills River features an industrial-chic taproom, tasty food truck, and regular live music.
Two vineyards produce highquality wines from European varietals. Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards is on farmland that’s been in the family for more than nine generations. Two miles away, Burntshirt Vineyards offers tastings in Appalachian Ridge Artisan Ciders its renovated farmhouse overlooking is the newest Cheers! Celebrate 125 Years Of Community In Valdese
O
n May 29, 1893, Southern Railway’s No. 11 chugged its way three miles west of Icard Station at Connelly Springs to a prearranged spot ‘in the middle of nowhere’ and stopped long enough to deposit a travel-weary band of t went y-nine souls who were to break ground on a settlement… The impoverished band of Alpine farmers quickly realized the rock infested ground was unsuitable for farming and to top it off, none of them spoke English” (McCall, M. (1993) What Mean These Stones. Valdese, NC: Historic Valdese Foundation). The Waldensian settlers must have been shocked at the uselessness of the rock infested soil. One may think this would have been a recipe for disaster. Instead of moving on to greener pastures, the Waldensians brushed the dirt off their shoulders and built a community that has withstood the test of time. The settlers persevered by adapting to their environment, building their homes out of rock and forging new
economic endeavors with textile and bread manufacturing. The postWWII period witnessed the best economic years for Valdese when it was recognized as the “fastest growing town in North Carolina.” This year marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of our community. I believe we can learn important lessons from our founders and build upon their legacy as we head into the next 125 years. The 125th Committee has worked hard over the last year to provide our community with many opportunities to recognize this significant milestone. I encourage you and your family to join us for this year of celebration! I’m also thrilled by the commission of a new public art installation depicting the arrival, which will be unveiled at this year’s Waldensian Festival near the railroad tracks in front of Town Hall.
