Winter Is The Best Time For Relaxing
Monty Stevens
O
utdoor adventures are just as FUN in the cooler winter temperatures of Stokes County. Locals say, “Winter is the best time for a relaxing, brisk hike to vistas of clear views for miles”. Take in the fresh mountain air of the Piedmont Region at Hanging Rock State Park, helping to clear the immune system of unwanted winter germs, as well as giving your mental health a boost to ward off the winter blues. Once temperatures drop below freezing for multiple days at a time, nature lovers flock to one of five waterfalls in the park, to admire the frozen wonder of icicles that form around rock outcroppings. If you are lucky, the most unique spectacle to experience, along an easy half mile trek, is the ability to walk behind or right up to the waterfall frozen in time. Kick off 2019 with a First Day hike at Hanging Rock! The event begins as the park opens, at the grand opening of Ruben trail on Ruben Mountain accessible from t h e To r y ’ s D e n p a r k i n g l o t a t Charlie Young Road. This trail is a 2.5 mile, moderate hike for novice and enthusiasts alike. The newest

t r a i l , a l o n g Ru b e n M o u n t a i n , gives park visitors a new peak to experience amazing views! Don’t miss this group hike with Park Rangers and trail builders for an insider’s perspective of the new trail and Ruben Mountain. At the turn of the New Year, Hanging Rock State Park offers something a bit outside the box — at least it is when the weather turns crisp. The Polar Plunge ushers in New Year for hundreds of crazy and happy thrillseekers. They flock to Hanging

Enjoy Shopping Small This Season In Uptown Lexington
O
n any given weekday, you’ll find parked cars lining Main Street in Lexington, people strolling the sidewalk with bags on their arms, and store doors swinging open and shut with customers going in and out. In an era of downtown revitalization, this small Piedmont town teems with activity. This time of year, the charming uptown district becomes a destination for shoppers seeking to spend their money locally. Uptown Lexington also promises an enjoyable alternative to larger shopping centers plagued by little available parking and lots of crowds. Storekeepers go all out for the holiday window display contest, decorating their businesses with artificial snow, Christmas trees, waving Santas and signature pink pigs (the city mascot). The Candy Factor y, recognizable by its red-and-white-striped awning, is not to be missed. Creaky floorboards lead the way to baskets filled with chocolate stars, Red Bird

peppermint puffs and multihued gumdrops. A large wooden display case contains fancy chocolates in all shapes and sizes, and homemade fudge. Select a gift box from the back shelf and staff members will fill it with your selection of candies and tie it with a ribbon. Legacy businesses here have survived for decades relying largely on ample inventory and customer service. Inside the Army Navy Store, shelves stretch to the ceiling with stacks of Carhartt jeans and overalls for those on your list who enjoy working or playing outdoors. Coats, vests and flannel shirts fill rack after rack, and a side room displays heavyduty work boots and lightweight hiking boots. Lanier Hardware has been in business since 1940, and it takes up nearly an entire city block. The store stocks the latest trends, such as Yeti coolers and Big Green Eggs; all manner of Christmas decor ; and old-fashioned standards, such

as wood stoves, housewares and sporting goods. Helpful sales clerks wait around every corner. Downtown also has several locally owned restaurants. Go for a casual bowl of soup and a sandwich at Cafe 35. When the shopping’s done, toast your success at Sophie’s Cork & Ale with small plates and a glass of bubbly. Known as the “capital” of North Carolina barbecue, Lexington celebrates with two major barbecue events: the BBQ Capital Cook-Off in late April and the Barbecue Festival in late October.

A Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas In Hendersonville
E
xperience the hospitality and warmth of a Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas with Home for the Holidays in Hendersonville. This popular series of holiday events kicked off Thanksgiving weekend and continues through the New Year. Main Street shopkeepers festoon their storefronts with decorations, while a downtown skating rink is open from Dec. 18–Jan. 1 offering a winter wonderland of activity. The rink features synthetic “ice” that allows for skating in any weather. The smooth surface is ideal for beginners, yet authentic enough for seasoned skaters. The skating area has increased this year, plus two curling lanes have been added.
Center stage Dec. 21-23 listening to wish lists and posing for photos. The Flat Rock Playhouse is the officially designated State Theater of North Carolina and it will present two holiday productions. “A Flat Rock Playhouse Christmas” is an original musical revue, and “Junie B. in Jingle Bells Batman Smells” is an endearing kids’ show based on the book series by Barbara Park. Other activities include greenery markets, the great cookie caper and “Holidays at the Movies” performed by the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra.
Several restaurants serve special holiday menus throughout the season, including Christmas Eve, Other activities at the rink include Christmas Day, New Year ’s Eve a fire pit for roasting marshmallows, and New Year’s Day. Relive The Last Of The Mohicans Where Its Final Scenes Filmed
T
he Last of the Mohicans last graced the big screen in 1992, but you can relive the beauty of its dramatic scenery by visiting Chimney Rock State Park located just 45 minutes outside of Asheville. Based on the James Fenimore Cooper novel of the same name, the Academy Award-winning film paints a portrait of life during the French and Indian War in 1757. The final 17 minutes of the historical epic feature sweeping views of the towering cliffs and 404-foot waterfall that hundreds of visitors travel to Ruther ford County to marvel each year. Stand at the top of Hickory Nut Falls and walk the winding Skyline Trail where stars Lake Lure and the Blue Ridge Foothills is an ideal destination all year long. Four distinct seasons offer visitors an abundance of opportunities to create unique experiences each time they visit.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com

The Sanctuary Simply Called “The Cabin”
T
he best part about turning 21, is that my mother, my sister, and I could text each other on a Friday and decide on a place to meet up, have a couple of drinks, and catch up on each other’s lives. Full disclosure, when I said “Friday,” I meant “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and also Friday.” Also, when I said, “catch up on each other’s lives,” I meant “whine about all the things that happened to us that day that made us want to punch a wall and cry. A lot.” The details aren’t important. The venue for our whining (and wine-ing) was, however, important. While there are so many businesses around Lake Norman that we support and adore, there is one spot in particular where we can minimize

the complaining and maximize the comfort. The Cabin in Davidson is a tr uly unique environment for unwinding. With a stunning view of L ake Norman, and the interior comfort of a cozy, rustic living room, The Cabin has all the elements for an evening of leisure.
