Come For The Food And The Beer At Tobacco Wood
W
e often take a drive to the unknown and wind up somewhere fantastic. It’s what we do! This time was a great surprise. Not only did we find an incredible brewery but we found awesome people like the staff at Tobacco Wood Brewing Co. and getting to meet and chat with owners Paul and Mara Shelton. TWBC started as a homebrewing class 13 years ago, and a love of craft beer, and has grown into a rural small town business that they are proud to call their own. Both Paul and Mara are veterans, and TWBC has the distinction of being the first female veteran owned brewery in NC. Several of their staff are veterans, and they represent this important part of their lives with the flags and décor on the ceilings and walls. The taproom shows some of the beauty of the county, through pictures of local tobacco barns, farms, local artists work, even to the reclaimed tobacco wood on the bar. They ’ve created an “English” public house feel, where everyone
and their families are welcome! Family game nights, run club, trivia night, community seed exchanges and more are just some of the ways the brewery pulls the community together. The taproom provides a place for local musicians to play every week and showcase their talent. Now I can’t forget to talk about the food O.M.G. Chef Jared & staff are on top of the game when it comes to cuisine to complement the craft beer. For example, the excuse me while I lick my fingers Chicken & waffles to the Hulking Baked potato with macn-cheese, BBQ, & onion rings on top. The entire menu is off the hook, and it even has a healthy option or two. Fried cheese curds are healthy, right? Taprooms are small town revitalizers, and that is what the Sheltons would love to see their brewery do for the lovely town of Oxford. An Insider’s Guide To The Craft Brewing Scene In Gaston County
T
he craft beer explosion that started in Asheville and Charlotte has finally made its way across the Catawba River into Gaston County. With an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities throughout the area, Gaston is the perfect setting for embracing the brewpub culture, and visitors will find several taprooms where they can taste award-winning beers from across the county. So after you’ve spent time paddling, biking, or hiking, discover what’s brewing with this guide to Gaston County’s top spots for craft-made beer.
Ole Dallas Brewery
Gaston County’s first brewery, Ole Dallas, is truly a homegrown operation. What started as a homebrewing hobby for five friends who grew up together in Dallas, North Carolina, is now a seven-acre production facility and taproom. The sprawling grounds are perfect for events you don’t typically find at urban breweries. Drop by for the pro wrestling tournaments in the parking area, a haunted trail at Halloween, and a vintage antique market on weekends. The partners are eyeing ambitious growth opportunities down the road, including a

brewhouse expansion, a restaurant, a private event space, and an outdoor concert venue for weekend festivals.
Rivermen Brewing Company
An old mill in downtown Belmont has been artfully restored with reclaimed wood and glass to house the Rivermen Brewing Company, which includes a brewery, taproom, and a full-service restaurant. There’s always a half-dozen seasonals and one-offs flowing from 20 taps, like the popular Almond Joygasm, a delicious play on its Peel Out Porter with coconut, chocolate, and almond notes. Guest ciders and proseccos round out the taproom offerings. Sandwiches, flatbreads, and salads are the mainstays of the pub dinner menu, while Sunday brunch beckons with treats like the Cinnamon Porter Pancake Stack. An outdoor patio is the perfect setting for a pint and pretzel or cupcake from the in-house bakery.

The first is a wine check service for those who purchase bottles and prefer not to carry them around all day. Purchases are taken directly to a wine check tent near the exit and held for pickup as patrons leave. The second perk is $5 shuttle service all afternoon to/ from hotels in the Elkin area.
