Recently expanded Moore’s Springs mountain bike trails offer an additional eight miles of beginner, intermediate, and advanced trails like the Rattler, a half mile trail of varying difficulty, sure to rattle even the most experienced. While working your way to the top, you’ll need extra pedal strength to push up short hills

Work on the Moore’s Springs trail system began in 2009, supported by a federal stimulus program, spearheaded by local trail builder Tony McGee, and built utilizing help of many volunteers. Within a years’ time the crew had blazed three miles of trial, doubling that to six miles of mountain bike paths the following year. In April of 2019 Hanging Rock officially opened the Black Racer, Copperhead Connector, Hognose, King Snake, Rattler and Ring Neck. Mountain Bike trails at the park now total nearly 15 miles, perfect for a thrill on two wheels or a casual hike by foot.

Must-Stop Spots Along The South Fork River Blueway

N

ot as well known and heavily traveled as the Catawba River, the South Fork River is an under-the-radar destination that you’ll want to keep all to yourself. Paddling the narrow South Fork River Blueway from Spencer Mountain to Cramerton is just the right amount of Class I-II whitewater to get the adrenaline pumping, but it’s mostly long and peaceful stretches of slowmoving flatwater.

McAdenville

It’s another 2.5 miles to the R.Y. McAden Access on river right, just after you paddle under a soaring train trestle and busy highway bridge, the most visible signs of civilization you’ll come across during your trip. The launch is also the trailhead for the South Fork Trail that follows the South Fork for two miles to connect downtown McAdenville with the Town of Lowell.

Part of this blueway’s magic is the protected shoreline that runs almost the entire length of the route. The woods are home to white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, great blue heron, osprey, and bald eagles. Here are the top spots to come ashore.

Returning to your boat, you’ll immediately paddle river left to take out at the Adam Springs Portage Trail just 450 feet downriver. It’s a short portage around the McAdenville Dam on a well-marked trail to continue past downtown McAdenville to South Fork Village.

South Fork River Park

South Fork Village

Depending on water levels, you’ll navigate two of the most challenging sections of whitewater between your launch at Spencer Mountain and South Fork River Park 3.5 miles downriver. Pull ashore on river left to grab a picnic table or bench and watch other paddlers float by. There’s a one-mile loop trail through the forest that you can hike before getting back on the river.

Just over a mile from your last take-out, you’ll come to the South Fork Village launch on river left. Secure your boat at the launch and hike up the hill to District 8 Beer Company, where they stock close to 100 craft beers from all over the U.S. While the nearby Sun’s Up Scuba is a full service scuba shop for certification, it also offers boat rentals to get you out on the water at the South Fork Village launch. Downtown Hendersonville Welcomes Colorful Characters To Main Street Photo: Sam Dean

S

ome of downtown Hendersonville’s most beloved residents retur n this spring. Twenty colorful bear statues take their places along Main Street for the annual Bearfootin’ Art Walk & Auction. The bears start as blank, white forms, and local artists decorate them with creative designs. The bears appear in May and stay in place until October when they are auctioned. Proceeds from each statue go to a different charity. Last year’s auction raised $47,200. This year’s bears include such themes as a scarecrow, mountain landscapes, flower gardens, a cat lady and Mardi Gras. The design often ties to the charity it represents. “The bears encourage people to get out and walk,” says Beth Carden, executive director of the Henderson County TDA. “It’s a nice place to get outside and enjoy art.” Throughout the season, visitors and locals alike pose for pictures with their favorite bears. Some make it a mission to snap a photo with each bear before fall arrives.

T h e B e a r f o o t i n ’ A r t Wa l k complements the everyday beauty of downtown Hendersonville, which encourages pedestrian traffic with wide tree-lined sidewalks and a curvilinear shape. Many of the eateries offer sidewalk dining, and shops create enticing window displays. Murals, water fountains and other public art installations make downtown a picturesque place to spend an afternoon. Several downtown businesses have purchased bears at previous auctions and given them a permanent home on Main Street. The Bearfootin’ Art Walk covers six blocks from Allen Avenue on the south end up to Sixth Avenue. Brochures with a complete listing of bears, artists, nonprofit beneficiaries and bear locations are available at the Visitor Center. Digital versions may be downloaded at www.DowntownHendersonville. org, the website for the Downtown Hendersonville organization, which oversees the project. State of Origin Festival Expands Reach, Yet Remains Local

T

he State of Origin Beer Festival in Morganton expands its reach this June while remaining true to its “drink local” philosophy. The sixth annual event takes place Saturday, June 8, on the square in downtown Morganton. In its first five years, the festival focused on breweries making beer from local ingredients. That scope has expanded to include distilleries, wineries and cideries this year, while remaining true to its “drink local” mission.

“The goal is to show people that local is not a trend, but rather a sustainable way to do business,” says festival co-founder Todd Boera, head brewer at Fonta Flora in Morganton. “For too long, the importance of ingredients was simply left out of the beer brewing community. Beer is an agricultural entity more than anything, and we hope to show Continued On Page 23

Rivermen Brewing Company

O

ur story started out on the creeks and rivers of the southeast. The four original partners of River men Brewing Company met on various paddling trips and adventures, lots of beer was enjoyed and friendships formed. We all share a love of paddling, outdoor adventures and beer. Over the course of many long drives and countless hours around campfires Pat started talking about opening a brewery. Having spent many years home brewing, the formation of Rivermen Brewing Company is a dream come true. We chose a location in Belmont, North Carolina that met our criteria. We wanted to have water access for the occasional afternoon roll session or paddle, we want to make a significant local impact and we needed good water. Our new location is located in Historic Downtown Belmont within an old mill, the structure is beautiful and it has an undeniable character. The overall

22

site lends itself to outdoor festivals and we are now a pedestrian destination for all of downtown Belmont. Pat and the entire team are excited to be a part of the Belmont community and share our craft beer, food and culture with you! Drink local and enjoy beers that are several hundred miles fresher. Must-Stop Spots Continued From Page 12

Downtown Cramerton and Goat Island Park

Paddle another mile downriver to the Town of Cramerton, the best spot along the blueway to grab a bite to eat. As you enter town, you’ll see a footbridge crossing over the South Fork and launches on both sides of the river. Take out on either side to explore downtown. Across the footbridge from downtown is Goat Island Park, a public park on a small island that used to be maintained by goats that were released on the island back in the early 1900s. In the evening, you can listen to the owls hooting in the thick trees lining the river. Play a round of disc golf on Goat Island’s 18-hole course, walk the paved .7-mile greenway trail, or turn the kids loose at the playground. There’s a fitness pavilion, fenced dog park, and amphitheater where the town hosts concerts and special events.

Cross the bridge to downtown for a lunch stop at Mayworth’s Public House, a local favorite for salads, burgers, and tacos. A couple doors down, Doffer’s Canteen serves quesadillas, rice bowls, tacos, and sandwiches in portions you’ll probably struggle to finish. Even if you leave the restaurant full, make a stop at Floyd & Blackie’s down by the river for an ice cream cone on your way back to the launch. Floyd & Blackie’s is also home to The Floating Goat, the spot to rent a canoe or kayak..

Riverside Park

The final 1.5-mile stretch of the South Fork Greenway takes you to Riverside Park. Pull your boat out to walk the 1.2-mile greenway, or continue paddling to the blueway’s final access point at the foot of Cramer Mountain. Written by Ann Gibson for RootsRated Media in partnership with Gaston County
