T

his relaxed, family-friendly festival features children’s activities during daylight hours, plenty of shade, and free nearby parking, with free shuttle service. Food options include BBQ, ribs, and chicken, along with vegetarian and vegan offerings. The local focus extends into the beverage offerings, with Angr y Troll Brewing, Skull Camp Brewing and Slightly Askew Winery on site. Lineup of artists for Reevestock 2019 includes Mipso, Brent Cobb, Time Sawyer, Songs From the Road Band, Nicholas Jamerson, Isaac Smith and Shay Martin Lovette. Its tag-line is “Keep Yadkin Valley’s Music Alive (and Kickin’)” and it does just that, starting with the Downtown Get-Down Block Party at 5 pm on Friday in downtown Elkin. During this free outdoor kick-off party, featuring Swim in the Wild duo, the Reeves Theater will be open for drink purchases. Following the Block Party, Brent Cobb & Them will perform at The Reeves Theater ($20-$30.) Brent Cobb’s songs have been performed by Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney and Miranda Lambert, and many more country music heavy hitters, and his major- label debut album, Shine On Rainy Day, received a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album.

The party continues at 10 pm with the Late Night Hoot, as Charlotte-based funk band Akita keeps the music going at a free show at Angry Troll Brewing. The main event, on Saturday, August 3, from 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm, gives the public the rare opportunity to visit Elkin’s Hidden Amphitheater, a privately-owned entertainment venue nestled in the wooded, gentle North Carolina foothills. The main stage is an artfully designed gazebo surrounded with a running stream with connected waterfalls. The amphitheater glows in the light of illuminated trees at night. The headlining artist on Saturday, performing at 8:30 pm, is Mipso, a Chapel Hill quartet that has grown from its string band roots into a multi-faceted Americana band, winning praise from American Songwriter, Rolling Stone, Amplifier Magazine and more. ituated atop a knoll outside Morganton with gorgeous views of the South Mountains is Silver Fork Winer y. Owners Jennifer Foulides and Ed Wisnieski left corporate America behind in 2013 to move south and create a place to sip, nibble and relax.

Following a tasting in the cozy tasting room, most folks elect to move out to the patio or firepit area where a gentle breeze often wafts across the property. It’s quite easy to spend an entire afternoon or evening in this gorgeous setting, especially with the Stockwild Kitchen food truck serving up farm-to-fork appetizers and small plates on the weekends. Needless to say, the winery and grounds are pet friendly. Human friendly, too. Guests are free to stay as long as they like, roam the grounds and just be.

he Beech Mountain Brewing Company Taproom and Grill and the Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria will be the venues for the Beech Mountain Throwback Music Weekend, August 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The family-friendly event takes place over three days. Friday and Saturday night performances at the Taproom are $10 each night or $15 for both nights, while the Sunday performance at the Brick Oven is free. The Throwback Music Weekend will feature music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, though a few stray tunes from this century might sneak in here and there. The Collective is a classic rock, blues and countr y band from the mountains of North Carolina. They’ve evolved into a crowd-pleasing favorite over 20 years of playing all types of music. With Dave Calvert on lead guitar and vocals, Jen Calvert on vocals, Dennis Murphy on sax and vocals, Patrick McConkey on harmonica, percussion and vocals, David Cox on drums, Randy Buchanan on bass guitar, Mike Stamey on guitar, they can cover almost any song.

They play over 300 covers and have a substantial book of originals, so no two shows are ever the same. Rockit Science performs Saturday, August 3rd at the Beech Mountain Resort Taproom from 7-9:30 pm. Rockit Science was formed in 2016 by founding members/guitarists Hillary Edwards and Scott Nanney. The band formed out of their desire to play the kind of music they enjoyed listening to growing up. They created a powerhouse cover band, focusing on 70’s/80’s rock as well as current popular songs. With the powerful vocals of Ruth Glennon as lead singer, they cover a whole range of songs, from Pat Benatar and Heart to Pink and more. Amy Edwards, keyboardist and backing vocals adds to the versatility & synergy of the band.
