NC’s Newest Wine Country: Hendersonville’s Crest Of The Blue Ridge

T

he Blue Ridge Mountain town of Hendersonville is the latest North Carolina region to receive federal recognition of its vineyards and wineries. This past July, Crest of the Blue Ridge Henderson County became an American Viticultural Area, or AVA.

Burntshirt is one of three wineries located in the Crest of the Blue Ridge AVA. The estate-grown winer y operates 30 acres of vineyards at two different sites located on both sides of the Eastern Continental Divide. The winer y and tasting room overlook 19 acres of grapes off of Sugarloaf Road just east of downtown Hendersonville. Burntshirt produces more than 20 wines, var ying from bold reds, such as cabernet sauvignon, to a refreshing vidal blanc and dr y rosé. The apple wine, made from local Henderson County apples, is a nod to the area’s apple-growing tradition.

Only regions that have distinctive soil, climate and elevation earn this designation. Warm days and cool mountain nights during the growing season, along with the right soil and water quality, provide favorable conditions for grape production. Sometimes Smaller Is Better!

T

ucked into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains sits a tiny gem called Round Peak Vineyards. One of the first wineries in the Yadkin Valley, Round Peak Vineyards is a boutique winer y focused on small lot winemaking and is charmingly individual. The current owners Ken Gulaian and wife Kari Heerdt took over in 2008 and have remained dedicated to the production of classic French and Italian style estate wines. Their personalities can’t help but show through in the winer y though. Ken’s tireless dedication and Kari’s free-spirited nature come together to make Round Peak Vineyards what it is. A place where you can have an award-winning glass of wine, in a totally relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. By keeping things small they have been able to explore more creative endeavors. Skull Camp Brewing was

started on the back patio in 2012 and was named after the nearby Skull Camp Mountain. While the brewery has expanded and moved to Elkin, NC, Round Peak still carries a selection of Skull Camp craft beers, as well as a list of off-dry to sweet wines under the Skull Camp wines brand, the first wine canned in North Carolina. Over the years they have added rental cabins, and regularly host weddings as well as private and corporate events. Most of the guests come for the wine but end up staying for the outstanding views from the back patio. As much as Ken and Kari have added to the customer experience at Round Peak Vineyards, one thing will never change. Round Peak Vineyards will always be small and personable. There’s A Whole Lot Of Stompin’ Goin On In Stokes County

2

019 marks the 45th continuous year of “Stokes Stomp Festival on the Dan”, the longest running North Carolina Arts and Music Festival held along the beautiful Dan River in Danbur y. Stomp, the signature festival making the founding of local Stokes County Arts Council, is held each September on the second full weekend. Moratock Park, a unique county park in a bend of the Dan River having ties to Civil War time, is taken over by a stage, vendors and activities for as far as the eye can see. This year ’s festival will be a single day event featuring music, dance, clogging, and traditional music, Arts and Craft Vendors, food trucks, youth river activities, North Carolina Woodworkers Association interactive projects, annual Duck Race, Spark Fitness Endurance Challenge and more. Kick off your Saturday in Danbury with the towns annual Stomp Parade, ushering in the festival at 10:00am, following the parade vendors are open and the three area High School Bands kick off the entertainment lineup.

Music will fill the air with sounds of bluegrass, country, soul, and a little Americana, listen closely as bands get going, locals and those wishing to join in, will start to Stompin’ on the hardwood stage. Some say the festival picked up its name from this unique mix of flat foot dancing and clogging where dancers slide their feet heel to toe and stomp the ground as they move around the stage to each downbeat with the heel keeping rhythm. On stage entertainment features Telluride Band Contest Finalist “One Fret Over” a bluegrass band from central North Carolina made up of teenagers who met at youth band camp in 2016, formed their quartet in early 2017 and have filled their schedule performing at local venues and festivals. The Old Dominion Cloggers representing the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia will showcase their footwork during bluegrass music sets. Dori Freeman of Galax, Virginia will take the stage featuring original music inspired by all veins of Americana - notably old Country and Blues. Dori draws heavily from her Traditional roots - juxtaposing Continued On Page 30

Adding to the delicious Eastern NC Style BBQ at the legendary landmark that is Grady’s, are some more experimental styles of BBQ – Adam’s Roadside BBQ does a mouth-wateringly good brisket sandwich with a side of creamy mac n cheese for example.
