here are many treasures to experience in Burke County. Many local attractions have done a lot of adapting to make sure that they are able to still provide fantastic, one of a kind experiences during the uncertainty of COVID-19. One of those attractions is the Henry River Mill Village located near Hildebran in Burke County. They combine the need for time outdoors with lessons in history that would make a fun family or “quaran-team” excursion. The Henry River Mill Village was built in 1905 as a planned, contained community centered around a cotton mill. The Village had 35 small houses for the workers and their families to live in, an independent fire department and emergency services, and a company store for the workers to buy basic necessities and even toys for their children. The mill shut down in the late 60’s due to manufacturing moving overseas, then the main mill building burned in 1977 but some workers still lived on the property until the late 90’s. The site stayed mostly abandoned until it was chosen as the site of District 12 in the first Hunger Games movie

that came out in 2012. This brought a lot of attention to the site and the momentum lead to it being placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in 2019. The village is offering self-guided tours as a way to aid with social distancing and have made admission for children (12th grade and younger) free with accompanying adult. Adult entrance into the Mill Village is $15 and 100% of the proceeds go directly to the Henry River Preservation Fund. hen the time is right for traveling again, those who enjoy outdoor adventure and craft spirits will find an ideal getaway in the small riverside town of Elkin.

A new movement is afoot in this former manufacturing town encouraging locals and visitors to explore Elkin. The Elkin Valley Trails Association, whose volunteers are in the hundreds, has built miles of hiking and mountain biking trails along the old Elkin & Alleghany Railroad line and in the hills and hollows surrounding Big Elkin Creek.

Locals are quite fond of saying “all trails lead to Elkin,” and there’s a lot of truth in that. But here we are in the midst of a ver y difficult time, and also at the beginning of the North Carolina Strawberr y season. The great news is these two points can intersect in Granville County as farms are cleared as “essential” because of the food supply they provide to households.

TRAIL POST MUDDY RIVER DISTILLERY

M

uddy River Distiller y announced it will make hand sanitizer to supply healthcare and first responders in Belmont, N.C. and Gaston County. Since Muddy River has temporarily closed distillery tours, production of sanitizer is a new priority. On Friday, Muddy River donated 95 gallons of hand sanitizer to CaroMont Health. Additionally, Muddy River Distillery plans to produce and donate over 300 gallons of hand sanitizer for use by CaroMont Health, first responders and nonprofits in Belmont and Gaston County. Home improvement retailer Lowe’s is stepping in to help offset additional operating costs for the distillery, allowing the initial 300 gallons of hand sanitizer to be made and donated to these heroes of our community. “We’re happy that Muddy River can do our part in responding to the coronavirus pandemic in our local area and thankful that Lowe’s wanted to step in to ensure

our small business could do this without worrying about additional operating expenses to do the right thing,” said Caroline Delany, co-owner of Muddy River Distillery. The distillery is asking organizations in the area to visit muddyriverdistillery.com and submit a request. Muddy River is also looking for access to various container sizes for distribution and will only be able to provide hand sanitizer to organizations versus individuals.
