ith a “Hart” for pres ervation and keeping traditions alive - Hart Square takes you back to a time where handcrafted and hard work was the way of life. Most people aren’t aware of Hart Square Village and that it’s located in Vale, NC. One of the best-kept secrets from the Hickory Metro region, Hart Square Village is home to North America›s (maybe even the world›s) largest collection of log structures from the 1800s. The village is truly hidden in nature and has been kept that way through the years to preserve the sacred space that preserves the history of this part of the Appalachian›s. Every October, the Village comes alive with the Annual Hart Square Festival, and this year being the 37th year, we look forward to seeing the hun dreds of volunteers, docents, and descendants of families join together to time-hop back to the 1800s. A unique and eye-open ing experience to the way things truly were in the 1800s - there is no other experience like it. While you’re in town for the Hart Square Festival, make sure to tack on a few more things to round out your weekend this Autumn. Another hidden histor ical gem is The Harper House, located in Downtown Hickory. BOCA features beautiful outdoor dining in a garden/patio atmo sphere with a stone wood-burn ing fireplace. Take your pick from the family-style Mediter ranean and Tapas menu items or choose to taste test your way through traditional Moroccan fare. Mas Amor Cantina is one of our newest locations and offers a second-floor view of Hickory’s beautiful sunsets. Whether you are outdoors on the patio area or inside by the industrial floorto-ceiling windows, you are in for one of the best sunset views in the area. 2nd Street Inn is in Downtown Hickory along the newly finished City Walk. This 14-room location can be booked through AirBnB or the 2nd Street Inn website. Catch outdoor con certs in downtown Hickory on the Square or at the Hum, Hicko ry’s newest outdoor music venue. Muddy River and Javesca Coffee Roasters in Charlotte partnered to create a special coffee blend that is then added to the Silver rum to create a smooth, sweet flavor that is easily enjoyed by itself or in various cock tails. Let that percolate.
Want to know more about their other rums, like their single barrel 4-year rum Queen Charlotte’s Reserve? Or even better, do you want to watch their videos showing viewers how to concoct their own cocktail creations? Or best of all, do you want to check out their Mill to Still video series docu menting and detailing every step along
A “Must See” Distillery
f I told you the perfect rum recipe existed, and it’s made right here in the Southern Piedmont region of North Carolina, would you believe me? Well, there’s only one way to prove it! And here’s your opportunity – at Muddy River Distillery located on the banks of Gaston County’s Catawba River in Belmont, North Carolina. Whether it’s just stopping by to view the collection of best sellers and uniquely crafted rum flavors, a fun, flavorful, and air-conditioned daytime outing during the week for a rum tasting, a fascinating tour featuring custom-built stills, wood barrels floor to ceiling, and the wonderful back story about how Muddy River came to be, or even cocktail classes and dinners, Muddy River Distillery has fun activities for almost any schedule. And if you haven’t heard of Muddy River Distillery until now, you’ll want to know more. Owners Robbie and Caroline Delaney started this business in 2011 with a passion for distilling rum after creating their perfect rum recipe. This passion and drive led to fast and massive growth – after start ing with just 500 square feet they moved to their current location with 6,000 square feet. But just recently, they made an ambitious purchase adding another location with over 17,000 square feet and four acres at the historic Mount Holly Cotton Mill. Muddy River Distillery prides themselves on using the best ingre dients, hand crafted recipes, and cus tom-built stills to make all seven of their current rums. Offering interest ing and intriguing flavors like Basil, which is made with hand-picked local basil and soaked in their Silver rum. Its fans say it will become a favorite of yours after just one sip. Another popular palate pleaser is their Coffee rum!
