Polar vortex no match for TOYOTA fuel cell

Record low temperatures have stranded many East Coast drivers in the United States, but not those driving a Toyota fuel cell hybrid vehicle. Connecticutbased Proton Onsite, which operates a fleet of ten Toyota FCHV-adv fuel cell vehicles, says that even in single digit temperatures, the FCHV-adv shows no signs of frostbite. “We had another snow storm Tuesday night and this morning the temperature was 3 degrees,” says Mark Schiller, Proton vice president of business development. “I went out to my Toyota FCHV-adv and brushed off a foot of snow before starting the car right up. No problem.” Unlike pure battery 12 / MARCH 2014

electric vehicles that can see reductions in driving range in extreme temperatures, fuel cell vehicles’ performance stands up to freezing temperatures. “I continue to get range of about 300 miles despite the cold and blasting the heater,” says Schiller. “The vehicle performed flawlessly.” Air Products in Allentown tells the same story. “Our employees have driven it to community and businessrelated events during one of Pennsylvania’s worst winters in recent memory,” says Nick Mittica, Air Products’ commercial manager, hydrogen energy systems. “The FCHV-adv has had great performance.” That

performance is by design. Over the last decade, the Toyota fuel cell fleet has logged millions of miles in some of the most extreme climates on the planet. In Yellowknife, Canada, where temperatures reach -30 degrees Celsius, fuel cell engineers spent weeks verifying cold weather start up, performance and durability. In Death Valley, they verified that it also can beat the heat. Wherever they go, Toyota engineers are working to ensure the fuel cell vehicle can handle whatever is thrown—or blown— its way. So when it hits the road in 2015, cold-weather customers can chill out about everything but bundling up! MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

The MCLAREN 650S ready for Geneva show McLaren Automotive will return to the International Geneva Motor Show this year with its fastest, most engaging, best equipped and most beautiful series-production supercar yet. Available as a fixed-head coupé or as a Spider, with a retractable folding hard top, the McLaren 650S promises to redefine the high performance supercar segment, and has been designed and developed to provide the ultimate in driver engagement on the road and on the race track. The 650S badge designation refers to the power output – 641 bhp – of the unique British-built McLaren M838T twin turbo V8 engine. ‘S’ stands for ‘Sport’, underlining the focus and

developments made to handling, transmission, drivability and engagement. Performance figures will be confirmed ahead of the Geneva Show but will improve on the already rapid 12C which continues on sale. The design is inspired by the McLaren P1, previewing a new family design language. The front bumper gives the McLaren 650S a dramatic, yet clean appearance and sits below new LED headlamps which reflect a similar look to the McLaren P1. The more integrated front splitter contributes to increased levels of downforce, giving a greater level of steering feeling and confidence to the driver on turn-in, while also adding to the agility and the car’s handling balance. Unique door blades behind the front wheels direct air from the trailing edges of the front splitter, further benefiting

front-end grip and vehicle balance. The aerodynamic performance of the McLaren 650S is as efficient as the 12C, boasting the same drag coefficient figure, yet the air is being worked harder and more efficiently as it flows over, and through, the functional bodywork. At 150mph, downforce levels are increased by 24pc. ‘As always with McLaren, the new design is there for good engineering reasons,’ says McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt. ‘The newly designed front bumper improves downforce and steering turn-in. The high speed handling balance is now even better. The LED lights use less power and last longer.’

HYUNDAI Motor unveils new concept car Intrado

Hyundai Motor has unveiled Intrado, its vision of how cars will meet future mobility needs. Far more than a styling exercise, Intrado demonstrates Hyundai’s belief that advanced vehicle technologies and intelligent design can combine to engage more effectively with driver and passengers. Set to be revealed to the public at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, Intrado has resulted from fresh consideration of what consumers will need and expect of their cars in the near 24 / MARCH 2014

future: cars that are easy to use, intuitive to interact with, and readily adaptable to the varying demands of their busy, active lifestyles. Intrado takes its name from the underside of an aircraft’s wing – the area that creates lift. The car’s advanced materials and technologies also draw inspiration from aircraft, such as the removal of all unnecessary weight, logical solutions to complex challenges, inspired by a purity of purpose, and a highly efficient powertrain.

The exterior of Intrado presents a progressive interpretation of Hyundai’s established fluidic sculpture form language. The vehicle’s distinctive shape is dictated by the need to be aerodynamically efficient; it is free of unnecessary adornments and features minimal detailing. The body panels are made of advanced super lightweight steel from Hyundai Motor’s steel plant. The central carbon frame structure is constructed using new, patent-pending manufacturing and joining techniques that together have the potential to change the way cars are made. The strength and rigidity of this central structure also allow body panels to be constructed from any material, giving designers greater flexibility and aiding repairability. Lightweight steel impact structures further enhance crash performance and repair times. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

Intrado is powered by a nextgeneration hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain that utilises a Li-ion 36 kWh battery. Refuelled in just a few minutes, Intrado has a range of up to 600 kilometres and emits only water. In addition to improved performance and increased range, Intrado promises more responsive and agile driving dynamics, thanks to the reduced weight and greater efficiency of its powertrain. Intrado is the first Hyundai to have been developed under the direction of Peter Schreyer, who became President and Chief Design Officer of Hyundai Motor Group in January 2013. He commented: “Effortless and sensual, Intrado reflects the open-mindedness and constant renewal of the Hyundai brand. It also shows that Hyundai wants its customers to rediscover the joy and freedom that should be associated with personal mobility. That’s why this car has such purity of purpose – it’s logical, lovable and liveable.”

The result of close collaboration between Hyundai Motor’s design and engineering teams, Intrado was styled and engineered primarily at Hyundai Motor European R&D centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany – as indicated by its codename, HED-9 (Hyundai Europe Design). Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre, led the design team that created the Intrado: “In line with its promise of a motoring future that is more relevant to users’ lifestyles, we have given Intrado a distinctive exterior and interior shape, formed from the lightweight frame that incorporates only what is necessary. The exterior is defined by a simple yet sporty profile which displays the latest interpretation of fluidic sculpture, while the interior shows how minimal ornamentation will perfectly fit into the varied lifestyles of the millennial generation.”

NISSAN BladeGlider to enthral European audience Nissan will be showing to the European audience for the first time at 84th Geneva Motor Show a bold new BladeGlider concept that challenges conventional thinking on performance car design. Inspired by Nissan’s innovative Zeod RC Zero Emission on Demand race car – set to take part in the 2014 Le Mans 24hr race under the event’s “Garage 56” rules – the BladeGlider features radical narrow front-track design layout that creates a distinctive swept-wing shape when viewed from above. Featuring perfect weight distribution thanks to the placement of the lithium ion batteries and in-board motors between the rear wheels, the

T

he Santa Fe was one of the very first offerings in the premium SUV segment when the very segment started blooming. Then along came a wave of other manufacturers bringing in their versions and the Santa Fe sort of faded away somewhere behind in the family picture. But this did not dishearten the Korean manufacturer. They buckled up and went back to the drawing board. And now for the year 2014, in all the grandeur of the Auto Expo, Hyundai presented the new Santa Fe. This brilliant looking machine gets straight thumbs up in the looks department. From every angle you behold it, it looks absolutely graceful. It just has about enough creases and lines everywhere, not more not less. The chrome trapezoidal

30 / MARCH 2014

grille sits perfectly between the striking angular headlamps. The new Santa Fe is based on the StromEdge design, which is an extension of Hyundai’s fluidic design language. The large SUV is a mix of sportiness and sophistication. The interiors of the Santa Fe are now as radical as the exterior.

The angular lines flow across the entire dashboard. Sitting in here you feel the Santa Fe has grown to the next level in terms of quality and appeal. Most important is that the interiors are not just form, but function as well. You get keyless pushbutton start, Bluetooth audio connectivity, steering mounted

controls, a reverse camera and 12 way adjustable driver’s seat just to name a few. You also get a dual zone climate control which works really very well. The new Santa Fe will come as a 7-seater. The front row and the second row are extremely spacious. The second row of seats can be reclined for added comfort. The boot space is enormous with the last row of seats folded down, and generous enough with them open. Even the last row gets

air condition vents for comfort. However do not expect much in terms of shoulder and head room in the last row. The engine powering the Santa Fe is a 2.2 litre diesel with 4WD which has more than enough pulling power for most customers needs. You can choose from a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission. We tested the automatic variant and are happy to report that it is a very smooth shifter. The engine is

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

refined and has a lot of grunt. One issue is the diesel clatter that seeps in the cabin, but is a very tiny one so can be ignored.

The handling dynamics are a massive improvement over the previous version of the Santa Fe. The steering response can

be optimised between Sport, Comfort and Normal. What that does is makes it heavy for sporty driving and soft for comfort driving. Coupled with the automatic gearbox and the Santa Fe is a very easy car to drive. The 4-wheel drive system comes with differential lock to conquer very difficult terrain. This is another very impressive

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

thing about the Santa Fe, it can actually get its shoes dirty and come out the other side. The price range of 26-30lakh is steep and might put-off a few buyers, but Hyundai is not worried. It is a technical showcase that how well their engineers can make a car. The way we see it, the Santa Fe is a brilliant SUV for the price.

I

n the mind of a true motorcycling enthusiast, Triumph Bonneville, or better known as Bonnie, is an iconic name. Back in 1959, the days of the original Bonneville T120, this motorcycle was considered as the E-Type of two wheels. Anybody with a Bonneville considered himself as an action hero. And just as the year 2013 ended, the British manufacturer announced its entry in India. And joy of joy, so did the Bonnie. I felt ecstatic riding this beautiful icon. Further through the years Triumph gave the Bonnie a bigger heart, equipment kept updating, more technology replaced older parts, even the ownership of the brand changed, but what did not change was that glorious styling which remained intact. There are lashings of chrome and black in the correct amounts across the entire body. The cool retro dials and the classic peashooter exhausts are a perfect mix of the old school and the new. The cooling fins on the engine block get chrome finishing as well. Triumph has even left the ignition at the side of the headlamp, just like the classic Bonneville, and even shaped the fuel injection like carburettors to keep the styling intact. Back when the Bonnie was conceived, it had a 650cc parallel twin engine with a 4-speed transmission. In the 60s, the Bonnie was well known for its engine prowess. It could cross 160kmph which was mind blowing in those days. Later the engine size increased to 724cc, and further bored to 744cc in the 70s. In 2001, the completely new Bonnie was launched with a 790cc engine. Finally the 865cc engine, with a new fuel injection system, made its debut in

2008. This parallel twin mill pumps out 67 horses and 68 Nm of pulling power. The critical word to be considered for this motorcycle is ‘effortless’. For all the hotheads, this is not a crotch rocket. This is the Bonnie. Riding an iconic machine like this sets a retro tone. You ride it like somebody who is not bothered about performance figures and lap time numbers. You ride it to make a statement that you have grown past these things. Mind you this does not mean that the Bonnie is not fast. When the mood takes you fancy, the Bonneville responds as a very capable and nimble motorcycle. Being a parallel twin completely changes the appeal from a lazy V-twin. The engine spins high and responds quickly through the shifts, in fact a bit too quickly. The fuelling system is abrupt in response for most riders liking, but hopefully you’ll get used to it. The Metzeler tyres are extremely good and can negotiate a variety of surfaces

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

found on our roads. The retro looks of the Bonnie might fool you in thinking that it handles like a sofa, but it is brilliant in the handling department. The steering feels light and responds to the slightest directional inputs. Another ace up its sleeve is the suspension which gives a very comfortable and planted ride. Getting to 160kmph is very easy for the Bonnie. However, what you’ll love is the brawny delivery it gives. Vibrations creep in after you go past that mark. A word of warning, the oil filter placement is problematic and the slightest scrap on a speed humps will make it pee. All I say is the ground clearance is fair, but be careful. As a bonus, the Bonnie returns about 20-25km to a litre of petrol. At 5.7lakh, the Triumph Bonneville not just gives you a lot of motorcycle, but also that strong evocative motorcycling legacy which is hard to find in today’s sea of mindless numbers.
