ust when we were going to the press, a new car was unveiled in the US by Tesla Motors. The Model 3 is an electric car for the mass market and is expected to be priced at around US $35,000 (approx. Rs 23.18 lakh) onward. Believe it or not, in just two days Elon Musk’s company received 276,000
bookings! The car is expected to be made available across the globe, including India.
India has to learn a lot from this Tesla model. We have our own brave hearts in the country like the Mahindras in the four-wheeler segment and Hero Electric in the two-wheeler segment. These companies and several others like them have hardly received the encouragement they deserve. On the one hand when the Indian government wanted its automobile industry to do well, it came out with an Automotive Mission Plan. When Indian companies started investing big time in the auto industry, the Supreme Court played spoilt sport and banned cars with diesel engines above 2000cc in Delhi NCR. That sent a very bad signal to the auto companies. Several of them were left stranded with some of their best sellers. They could not any longer tap the markets of Delhi NCR. That is bad economics.
Given the right direction and encouragement, even companies like Mahindra & Mahindra can come out with cars like the Tesla Model 3, or even better. Electric vehicles are good for the environment, but very important is a proper roadmap for the Indian auto industry. The April 2016 issue of Motown India has an interesting report on the new Model 3 electric car from Tesla Motors, besides the usual road test reviews and industry news.

Tesla Motors unveils mass market electric Model 3 car • To be made available in India • 276,000 bookings in 2 days

esla Motors, the US based manufacturer of electric cars, has just unveiled its latest vehicle, the Tesla Model 3. The car was unveiled by Elon Musk, Founder and CEO of Tesla Motors in California, US. Several high net worth Indians have already booked the car and have tweeted about it. The car carries a starting price tag of US $ 35.000 (Rs 23.18 lakh), less than half of what the upmarket Model S costs. Deliveries of the car will start end of 2017. Within hours of the unveiling of the car, people jammed the internet and stores worldwide to book this car. Bookings in just two days stood at 276,000. At the time of going to press, this figure was steadily rising. Analysts estimate that bookings could touch 500,000. Tesla Motor’s Fremont, Califronia based plant is far from

solar Powerwall technology. Modi and Musk had also apparently discussed the possibility of a more affordable car from the company. Musk stated that Model 3 will have a minimum 215 miles (346km) range on a single charge. “We have got an amazing product to be shown to you tonight and you’re going to be blown away. ...Why are we making electric cars? It is very important to accelerate transition to sustainable transport. This is really important for the future of the world. We have record high CO2 levels. What it does is that it is steadily increases temperature. We have already increased that by 2 degrees. But that does not tell the whole story because extremes of temperature increased by as much as 20 degrees,” Musk said before unveiling the electric car. Musk in his address took the audience through the company’s
journey wherein it started with the Roadster as part of the company’s secret Tesla Master Plan. “This was the first plan that I wrote for the company. Originally it was a three-part trilogy but now it is a four-part trilogy,” he said. He elaborated n the success of the Model S and the Model X. “Both of them are really important because the revenue from Model S and X is what was needed to develop the Model 3. ... The models S and X are what paid for the Model 3,” he said. “We now come to the final step in the Master Plan, a mass market, affordable car. It was only possible to do that by going through the prior steps. The Model 3 is going to be an incredibly safe car. We really believe that safety has to come first. The Model 3 will be five-star in every category. Even the base model will do 0 to 60 miles (almost 100km) an hour in

less than 6 seconds. Of course there will be versions of Model 3 which will go much faster. The range will be at least an EPA rating of 215 (346km) miles per charge. These are minimum numbers and we hope to exceed them. All Model 3 cars will come standard with auto pilot hardware. Auto pilot safety features will there in all cars. The car fits five adults comfortably,” he explained to the audience in his speech which was shared live around the globe through internet. The Model 3 has enough leg room for both rows of seats and the rear roof area is one continuous pane of glass. “It gives you amazing headroom and a feeling of openness. By far it has the best roominess for any car of its size. Like the Model S it has the front and rear trunks. It has more cargo capacity than any gasoline car of same external dimensions,”
he noted. The Model 3 will come with supercharging as standard. “The reason supercharging is very important is that it gives you freedom of travel. We have built 3600 superchargers worldwide and about the same number of destination chargers. By end of next year we shall double the number of superchargers and quadruple the number of destination chargers. You would be able to go virtually anywhere because the on board charging in Model S is able to adapt to any country’s voltage. Wherever you go in the world, wherever there is electricity you can charge. What about buying and servicing? Today we have 215 locations in Asia, North America and Europe and by the end of next year expect to double that with 441 locations,” he further added. Musk also informed that in order

to supply lithium ion batteries for the large number of cars he intends making every year, the company has built a gigafactory. “This is a vital element. The gigafactory will have the largest footprint of any building of any kind. Volume metrically it will only be second to the Boeing factory in Washington. It will produce lithium ion batteries more than all other factories in the world combined. We shall also be producing the

Reva electric car has a long way to go in terms of performance when compared to a Tesla model. The Indian company has also plans to launch an all-electric version of its Verito car. On the policy front, there is already a National Electric Mobility Mission plan under which the government is offering subsidies on electric vehicles. The government aims to put at least 7 million electric and hybrid vehicles
on road by 2020. The government had launched the FAME India scheme offering incentives on electric and hybrid vehicles. FAME India - Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India - is a part of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan. The scheme envisages Rs 795 crore support in the first two fiscals starting with 2015-16.

MARUTI SUZUKI VITARA BREZZA
HERO Report: P. THARYAN / Photography: AFSAR BAIG

aruti Suzuki had been keen for a while to introduce into the Indian market a sub 4 metre compact SUV. And smartly enough, the parent company let their Indian engineers led by CV Raman to take complete control. The result has paid off. Everything about the vehicle is kind of perfect, including the pricing. With the S-Cross crossover the company goofed up a bit on the pricing (it later corrected the prices by cutting it by around Rs 1 lakh for the top end). Now the company has filled the critical space of compact SUV with the Vitara Brezza, a vehicle heavily engineered in India. The Brezza has been launched in the country in several variants with prices starting at Rs 6.99 lakh. We got to drive the top end variant (but without the dual tone body colour scheme), the ZDi+ and found the vehicle adequately powered with some very modern features. Initial power delivery is a tad delayed but as the needle goes up on the rev meter, the engine power enhances considerably. The Vitara Brezza is powered by the DDiS 200 1.3 litre diesel engine, the one that also powers the S-Cross. The engine churns out around 89bhp@ 4000 rpm and

a peak torque of 200Nm@1750Nm. Maruti Suzuki has used multiple technologies intelligent battery management, gear shift indicator, low rolling-resistance tyres etc that make the Vitara Brezza high on fuel efficiency. The company claims it can give you 24.3 kmpl. A petrol variant for the Vitara Brezza is expected in the future. The vehicle definitely has a bold and masculine stance, while its styling is a lot on the sporty side. Incidentally this is the company’s first compact urban SUV. The signature ‘Bull Horn’ LEDs with unique turn indicators add to the smart looks of the vehicle. The belt and rocker lines are raised and along with a gently sloping roofline it adds dynamism to the Brezza. On the rear, Vitara Brezza gets split tail-lights with LEDs and an embossed signature chrome bar that again ensures that the SUV has a smart derriere. Balanced proportions, square wheel arches with large tyres add to the appeal of the vehicle. The Vitara Brezza has a 198mm ground clearance which I felt was a tad short for experiencing some rough terrain driving. Though this vehicle is really not meant for some tough off-roading, it is more of an urban machine and definitely comes strong on comfort features. When it comes to the interiors, the chic

element is evident. The vehicle has a contemporary dashboard with a very modern layout. The meter cluster looks good and the decent garnishing in the dash area is subtle and classy. It’s even got an advanced infotainment system. This unique cockpit style instrument cluster with mood lights, and SmartPlay infotainment are some of the first-in-class features in Vitara Brezza. There is also a gear shift indicator. Customers get a choice of 5 preset colours in the speedometer, which they can choose as per their mood. Though personally I did not understand the value of this mood light, I was told the young find it very trendy and chic! Other comfort features on Vitara Brezza include rain sensing wipers, auto headlight, cruise control, aircooled upper box, card holder in glove box, among others. The cabin scores well on the
practical side too. There is a lot of usable space. The cabin is really spacious and even when the front seat is pushed back completely, the leg room space at the rear is quite remarkable. Another interesting fact is that the vehicle with a height of 1640mm, offers ample headroom and the company claims that occupants with various (at least 18 different) Indian head gears can be seated with the slightest hitch. That’s good news for a lot of folks in Rajasthan and Punjab who wear colourful head gears! The boot can accommodate 328 litres in volume terms. The space can be extended with the flip folded seats and 60:40 rear split, maximising the utility space. While driving the vehicle on the national highway connecting Pune to Bangalore, I was impressed by the engine’s effortless surge beyond the initial speeds. Speeds

up to 140kmph are touched rather effortlessly. Power delivery is also very linear as the speed gather momentum. The engine is torque plenty with its peak being achieved at a low rpm of 1750. As for the ride and handling, there is a lot to be said. Despite the rather tall structure, the body roll is minimal and the vehicle
handles very well. The R16 tyres on the top end also plant the vehicle quite firmly the ground. Because of some very good insulation, the outside noise too is filtered out from the cabin. The NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels have been kept at the lower level as a result of some great work on the

suspension. Moreover with the use of pendulum engine mount system, acoustic insulation and absorption materials around the cabin and engine compartment have also ensured low NVH levels. The monocoque body design has very much enhanced the ride handling

and stability even at higher speeds. Safety too has not been compromised in the vehicle. Hitensile steel brings strength along with low body weight. While driver airbag is a standard on all variants, front passenger airbag and ABS with EBD are offered as an option
from base variant onwards. Despite the intense competition in the mid SUV segment, Maruti Suzuki should be able to clock some good numbers with the new Vitara Brezza. After all, it’s a compact hero in the compact SUV segment. MI

Practically speaking, this car is actually meant for a country like India where roads are generally plastered with pot holes of all shapes and sizes. Besides you really are not sure where a road starts and where it ends! The cross country tag means that this car is no ordinary fourwheeler. It is a luxury sedan with some sporty features. No, it’s not a hard-core off roader, but it is definitely a soft-roader that takes on the bumpy terrains with great ease. The car is powered by 2400 cc D4 diesel engine with an all wheel drive transmission. The engine produces 190bhp and a maximum torque of 420Nm. The best part of the sedan is that it’s got a ground clearance of 201mm. The S60, its city cousin has a ground clearance of only 136mm. Let’s compare this S60 Cross Country with some of the existing SUVs and sedans in the country. The BMW X1 has a ground clearance of 193mm, the Audi Q3 has 170mm and the GLA from Mercedes has 183mm ground clearance. Coming to sedans, the BMW 3 series has a ground clearance of 157mm, the Audi A4 128mm, the Mercedes C class 157mm. In short, the S 60 Cross country is an weather, all terrain vehicle. On the road, the S 60 Cross Country has an imposing and muscular presence. This sporty sedan has a cross over design and it stands tall with its high profile tyres (Michelin 235/50

R18). The car has black fender extensions, scuff plates, coated skid plates and integrated dual exhaust tail pipes , all of which add to the sporty stance of the vehicle. The high ground clearance also means the car has a relatively high seating position. Driving the Volvo S 60 Cross Country is akin to painting a landscape with Picasso holding your hands. This is because of the tons of electronics installed in the car that assist you drive on any type of terrain, however difficult it is. Be it straight roads or twisty roads, the car behaves pretty disciplined. The Corner Traction Control, the Hill Descent Control, advanced all wheel drive system with instant traction, the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, all come into play whenever the need arises. For example, the AWD with instant traction has an electronic management system that constantly monitors the speed of the wheels, the throttle, the engine torque, engine speed and the brakes. As driving conditions change, wheels with the best grip get the most power. When a tyre loses traction, power is reduced to the wheel and instantly transferred to the one that has a better grip. Mind you, this traction control feature comes so

instantly and so seamlessly that a person driving the vehicle seldom notices it, except that you believe that you are the one driving superbly! On Indian roads this feature comes quite handy as our roads are extremely unpredictable with pot holes and rubbles surprising you at constant intervals while driving. The electronic treat does not end there. The Dynamic Stability and Stability Control helps in

providing stability when roads conditions get slippery. The Corner Traction Control by torque vectoring balances the torque between the front wheels during acceleration while cornering, thereby reducing understeer. This feature comes into play when you are cornering the car at high speeds. The automatic car can also be driven in S mode wherein you can use the paddle shifts to change gears. In sport mode you can experience better acceleration and can have fun with the car. The car also comes with a lot of other capable features like Cruise Control, Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, Adjustable steering wheel, rain sensors, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS, Active High Beam headlights etc. Once you are inside the car, the sculpted sports seats keep you firmly ensconced. The front seat positions can be adjusted electronically, besides there is also an option for three memory settings. The leather seats with a combination of offblack and beechwood brown colours gave a very chic feel to the interiors. Volvo’s Sensu Connect offers full connectivity with entertainment and navigation apps. The moment you sit in the driver’s seat you realise that the cockpit has been literally designed around you. The dashboard gently angles towards you, making it easier to see as well as reach out for the buttons on the dash. The three-spoke steering wheel feels solid when you grip it. With loads of electronics and the host of safety features installed in the car, the S 60 Cross Country is a premium car built with a purpose. The Volvo S60 Cross Country is a very practical car and is definitely an Indian delight! MI

hen Renault Duster was launched in the summer of 2012 in India, the name “Renault” was not so popular in the country. The Duster became a runaway hit and the name Renault almost became a household name in the country. With the launch of the butch looking Kwid a few months back, there seems to be no looking back for Renault in India. The Duster of late has lost some of its sheen because of the intense competition in the mid SUV segment. The Hyundai Creta has taken this SUV segment by storm. In the compact SUV segment too the likes of Mahindra TUV300 and the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza have intensified competition big time. Renault had no other option but to go in for yet another face lift for the Duster, this one a bit more significant. It’s now got itself an additional transmission for the Duster. The Duster, mind you is a very successful SUV. More than 140,000 of them are running on Indian roads ever since it was launched mid-2012. The most prominent change in the vehicle is that now it’s being offered with a 6-speed Automated Manual transmission (AMT) (it’s called Easy-R AMT), a first for a transmission of this kind in the country. Around 32 new features have been added on, a few of them cosmetic and few critical too. Since its launch the Renault Duster has been fighting with some of the attractive products introduced in the Indian SUV space. These include the Ford EcoSport, the Hyundai Creta, the TUV300 and the recently introduced the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Barring the Creta, all the others are subfour metre vehicles and come in the compact SUV segment. The 6-speed Easy-R AMT version is one of the several variants being offered by the company. The manual transmission version is available in five variants – Standard, RXE, RXL, RXS and RXZ, with both petrol and diesel powertrains. The petrol engine is a 1598cc four cylinder in-line engine producing 103bhp@5750 rpm and a torque of 148Nm@3750 rpm. There is also a 1461cc engine that is offered. While one diesel

engine produces 84bhp@3750rpm and a peak torque of 200Nm@1750rpm, the other diesel engine, a turbo charged one, produces 108.5bhp@4000 rpm and a peak torque of 245Nm@1750rpm. The AMT variant comes with the turbo charged diesel engine. So what are the changes to the Duster? There is a new dual winged front grille. There is also this new hawk eye cluster headlamps with firefly fog lamps. The top end variants get the exquisite looking gun metal finish 16 inches alloy wheels. There is also now electrically adjustable and foldable ORVM’s with turn indicators. The new Duster will also be available in a bright and sporty colour – Cayenne Orange. The interiors too have gone in for a

change. The vehicle now comes with crimson-black interior theme with sporty double spacer fabric for the all wheel drive and a cedarwood-black Interiors theme with premium embossed fabric for other variants. There is also a dual tone soft touch dashboard. Convenience features include new rear view camera with guidelines, new automatic air conditioning, new auto-up/down window with anti-pinch, new media nav, and new centre fascia. Driving is made a lot safer with ABS, EBD with Brake Assist, dual airbags, ESP & Hill start assist. Apart from the visually appealing changes, what we really went out test was the new 6-speed AMT. Smartly enough the company

has not mated this transmission to the 4 wheel drive variant. It’s only the 2 wheel drive 1461 cc diesel engine that has got this luxury. We all know 4X4 buyers are assumed to be a lot more adventurous that their 2 wheel drive counterparts. The 6 speed AMT is a bit slow on the take. Even when you gun the machine fully, the transmission takes a tad bit of time to move from the first gear. Finally when it settles down at the third gear, everything looks up and the machine starts to roll and the vehicle gathers tremendous speed. But please remember, the Duster has been a hit among a lot of young Indian families. Safety is their prime concern and none of the customers seems to have a maniacal bent

of mind. Thus by fitting the AMT to a 2 wheel drive variant has been a very sensible step by the company. For someone who loves speed, and worships it as though there is no other God, this new AMT is a big “NO. They could rather go for the other manual transmission variants. But then if AMT is what he has
www.motownindia.com
decided, then he or she has the option to go into the manual model and get his machine rolling faster. On a personal front, I liked the new AMT. It makes life a lot easier in the heavy traffic and long distance driving. With this facelift, the Renault Duster has just got a lot smarter and
safer. But then it was always a good looking practical SUV. Apple to apple if it were to be compared to the Hyundai Creta (this is also not a compact SUV), both also have a six speed automatic transmission. But then the Duster has a 4X4 option! With the new AMT option, Renault has thrown in a new automatic challenge to others in this segment. MI

he Indian subcontinent is a land filled with wonders and beauty. The expanse of the country is filled with a variety of terrain and most of the exotic destinations it offers can be traversed by road. But on these journeys your friends and family are not your only companions. The vehicle you choose to take on these expeditions is also your companion. We got our hands on the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga SHVS and decided to take it on a journey. But this journey was chosen specifically to test the Ertiga SHVS. Maruti Suzuki calls this a Smart Hybrid Vehicle so we took it for a spin through the crowded streets of New Delhi and on to the open highways of Uttar Pradesh. The hybrid function in this car is a start stop function which is useful in stop-and-go traffic. When the vehicle is not moving, the gear is in neutral and you decompress the clutch pedal the engine cuts off. Press the clutch pedal and the engine comes back to life. The vehicle uses deceleration and braking to generate energy to power this start stop function and therein lies the Hybrid technology. The Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) is a new age technology driven, Smart Hybrid car. Apart from the features like Engine Idle Start Stop function offered by Micro Hybrids in the market, SHVS takes it to the next level by adding Engine Assist (engine power assistance using an electric motor and efficient power regeneration (brake energy regeneration) system, which improves energy efficiency thus contributing to the environment. Also the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) ensures quick and silent restart, which is not possible by conventional starter, based Micro Hybrids. During deceleration / braking, the ISG charges the advanced high capacity battery and provides energy to assist the engine’s idle stop start function and helps the engine during acceleration In terms of convenience and fuel saving the vehicle does score top marks because it makes switching the

engine on and off so easy. During our daily commutes we encounter jams at almost every corner be it at a red light, a toll booth or just bad roads but the Ertiga SHVS does the job with ease. Maruti Suzuki has seamlessly integrated this technology into the car making it extremely convenient for users to operate and save fuel. Speaking of fuel efficiency the vehicle offers 24.52kms to a litre of diesel which is quite decent. The Ertiga when launched was an extremely popular MUV simply because it was much more affordable than an Innova and was very practical for city users. Yes, the Toyota Innova which comes with a more powerful engine, has its own strengths to offer. The Ertiga has now received some aesthetic changes and has a bolder looking front grille with ample chrome garnishing and an aggressive looking bumper. The Ertiga has an impeccable stance and road presence despite the fact that it is an MUV. On the inside the car now gets a smart play infotainment system which offers Bluetooth connectivity of navigation, audio streaming and smart phone integration. The dashboard is well laid out with all buttons easily accessible to the driver. The Ertiga also comes with power adjustable and retractable ORVMs as well as steering mounted controls for audio and mobile phone access. The Ertiga has practicality built in to its spaces, the car has 3 seating rows and can seat up to 7 people. The first and second row can be adjusted to increase space for third row occupants. The driver
28 | MOTOWN INDIA | APRIL 2016
seat provides ample of support of the thighs, back and shoulders. The second row also gets a centre armrest but it does not have cup holders. There are plenty of cubby holes and spaces in all three rows to store pocket sized items apart from the usual bottle and cup holders. The seats are quite comfy and 7 average sized Indian adults can fit into this car with ease. The Ertiga however does not come with a lot of boot space. At just 135 litres the boot space I felt was grossly inadequate but the vehicle does offer foldable second and third rows to create more space. The MUV also gets AC vents for the second row. The Ertiga is powered by a 1248cc diesel mill which produces 88.5bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. For urban commuting the vehicle has an optimal power output and can achieve a good speed easily with 3 to 4 passengers seated. However if you are seating 7 people in the vehicle there is a slight drop in performance but nothing that
is detrimental at all. The 1.3 litre diesel mill is very peppy. The turbo kicks in anywhere north of 1800rpm after which the Ertiga is able to pick up speed quickly. The build quality of the vehicle is very sturdy and the ride is quite solid. The suspension set up is on the stiffer side and riding over bumps and potholes is not too much of a bother. The Ertiga also has a decent turning radius (5.2 metres) despite is size and is very manoeuvrable through traffic and tight corners. We had previously taken the Ertiga to Tirthan valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh and drove through some really bad roads as well as very narrow mountain stretches. The vehicle got us there with ease and did not pose any problems on the way. It provided enough room for our luggage and catered for a very comfortable journey. A car as I said earlier is also a companion on your journeys and this is one companion who I would take along with me any day. MI

FIRST DRIVE NEW HONDA AMAZE CVT

hen Honda first launched the Amaze back in 2013 it was an instant success. Consumers looking to buy a car in the compact sedan segment finally had another choice apart from Maruti Suzuki’s Swift Dzire. Not only did the Amaze offer consumers a refreshed design but it also brought Honda’s engineering prowess to the table. Almost three years went by and the car did not see any changes until the morning of March 3, 2016. Honda announced the official unveil of the facelifted 2016 Amaze. The car has undergone some not so subtle changes like a new front grille, new front bumper, new fog lamps, new taillamps and a brand new dash. The car does leave hints of the old Amaze but has definitely got some zing to it. The front grille now has a single bold chrome wing which bears the Honda badge while the bumper gives the car a more modern and aggressive look. Moving to the rear end of the car one can see a brand new taillight design. The overall design of the casing remains the same but the interior casing has been revamped. Honda has given a more symmetrical look to the layout and I feel it is a much welcome change. The interior of the car is where we can
30 | MOTOWN INDIA | APRIL 2016
see some real changes. Contrary to the previous design the dashboard on the new Honda Amaze is much more contemporary. However it does remind you of the Honda City and the design has definitely been borrowed from the City as well. It now features a Bluetooth enabled audio system with steering mounted audio controls. The car also gets an optional fully automatic climate control system which I found to be one of the better ones in the segment. The quality of plastics, however, is a letdown and has not seen too much improvement. The overall package of the Amaze has definitely got some handy features like electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs, rear reading lamp, Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity but one does feel the need for parking sensors or a rear view camera as well. Two-paddle technologies are increasingly becoming popular in urban areas and most of the contenders in this segment have brought forth their champions. While Maruti Suzuki has the Dzire AMT, Tata Motors introduced the Zest AMT. But Honda had other plans. Along with the launch of the facelifted Amaze, Honda also launched the CVT version of the car. This is the first time any manufacturer has brought in a CVT in this segment

in the country and we just had to find out how good it was. The CVT version of the car gets a minutely bigger engine but is one smooth cat. The Amaze CVT is powered by a 1.2 Litre, 16 Valve, petrol mill which churns out 88.7bhp and 110Nm of torque. Now it does take time for the car to reach the meat of the power band but once it does, all is smooth sailing. However this configuration is for pocket friendly driving and will return a decent mileage of 18.1 kmpl. You have the option of throwing the stick into Sports mode and squeezing some more power out of the engine to make for a zippier ride. While I was cruising on the streets of New Delhi I couldn’t help but admire how easy and comfortable it was to drive this car. The Honda Amaze has one of the shortest turning radiuses in this segment, set at 4.7 meters. It makes for a very manoeuvrable ride while driving in congested traffic or parking in tight spaces. The CVT just lets you glide
through traffic without the hassle of clutching and I did not feel a single jerk. Ride comfort and quality are also commendable on this vehicle and Honda has done a fine job with the suspension set up in the car. The front features a McPherson Strut while the rear has a torsion beam setup. The tuning of the suspension is a tad bit stiff but I felt it to be perfect for Delhi roads. We went over some really rough patches and I did not have to worry too much about the smaller pot holes. The steering on the Amaze does feel a bit wooden but is very well weighted and constant at all speeds. Honda is offering the top end CVT version of the car with driver and passenger airbags as well as ABS. The car is available for Rs. 8,19,900 (ex-showroom Delhi) which I feel is definitely worth every penny. MI

he open road has beckoned many a rider and its call is soft and endearing. But when we step up onto those two wheels the worries of this world transform into just a blur. With the world behind we set off into the abyss with nothing but the deep low thumps of a motorcycle for company. And that to me is freedom beyond all boundaries. Royal Enfield entered the market back in 1955 and ever since has been liberating many a rider. But this time around
34 | MOTOWN INDIA | APRIL 2016
they did something different, something which will shake up the very foundation of how we Indians perceive motorcycles. They envisioned a purpose built motorcycle but they ended up granting a million dreams instead. Royal Enfield motorcycles have traversed vast distances, not just across the plains of India, but also some of the highest motorable roads of the country, to prove their prowess. Khardung La, a mountain pass located in the Ladakh region at a height of 17,582 ft is witness to the Royal Enfield’s almost mythical reputation as a
dependable motorcycle. The company has offered customers a variety of motorcycles from retro cruisers like the Bullet to timeless icons like the Classic series. In more recent times the company has also brought in more contemporary motorcycles like the Thunderbird and Continental GT. While the GT gets Enfield’s biggest engine (535cc) currently on offer the other motorcycles are available with the trusty 350cc and 500cc engines. With tons of data culled out from those endless touring experiences, the company decided to build a motorcycle

just for the mountains and call it the Royal Enfield Himalayan Royal Enfield did not just envision an adventure touring motorcycle but has poured its heart and soul into this bike. They began building this bike from the ground up and ended up with a brand new engine. They call it the LS-410. This new engine has a fuel capacity of 411 cubic centimetres and is powered by a single cylinder with an overhead cam. The engine is also air cooled and has been designed to deliver high torque and usable power at lower RPMs. It produces 24.5bhp at 6500rpm and 32Nm of peak torque from 4000-4500rpm. The motor, however, feels unlike any previous Enfield motorcycles. The technology and refinement which has gone into this bike is quite evident from the way it behaves.
While most Enfield lovers adore the bike for its thump, this new motor is more about performance and agility, the bike feels nimble and eager to accelerate. What the rider gets is a smooth ride even on higher gears at lower speeds making it surprisingly easy to traverse the varied terrain of the Himalayas. The fuel delivery system currently on the bike is a carburetted one while a fuel injected system could have enhanced performance further. The LS-410 engine has been designed using some of the most modern technology and materials available which cater to increased efficiency and low maintenance

costs. The Himalayan is capable of going 10,000kms without an oil change. The bike also comes with a counter balance which minimises engine vibrations making this a very welcomed change from the previous Enfield engines which have dominated the market so far. Royal Enfield tested and designed the Himalayan over a span of two years. They finally chose to build it on a rugged half-duplex split cradle frame. The Himalayan also features a mono shock rear suspension with linkage which allows for a longer suspension travel delivering
a smoother ride performance irrespective of the terrain. The suspension set up on the bike is on the stiffer side but is perfect for off road conditions. The front telescopic fork suspension is capable of 200mm of travel while the rear monoshock can handle 180mm of travel which is more than adequate to take on the roughest of terrain in the mountains. The Himalayan’s 220mm ground clearance also ensures it gobbles up hurdles be

it the Rocky River beds of the Himalayas or potholes in the urban jungles. Royal Enfield has brought in a whole new level of engineering standard with this bike. The fit and finish, the build quality and ergonomics all seem to have been thoroughly thought out. Touring utility has also inherently been built into the Himalayan. The bike features a 15 litre fuel tank which returns a range of almost 450kms. The bike also gets luggage mounting points for hard panniers, soft luggage and jerry cans. A simple instrument cluster keeps track of speed, direction, ambient temperature, travel time, service intervals and multiple trip distances as well. The ride and handling of the Himalayan is one which can take you by surprise. While most Enfield riders will not associate their bikes with the word agile, the Himalayan has defined it. Leaning at corners or making tight u-turns on narrow dirt roads seems like a breeze. The bike comes with 90/90 R21 front and 120/90 R17 rear dual purpose tyres which grip road very well and are decent on other surfaces as well. The overall design of the front section of the bike aims to reduce weight and the company has even factored in a new light weight hub in a bid to make this bike as nimble as possible. Rider comfort has also been factored in with the bike providing an ergonomical sync between the foot pegs, the handlebar and seat height. So riders get an upright seating posture and don’t tire easily.
www.motownindia.com
The seat height has been set at 800mm with a lower mass balance to ensure your feet are planted to the ground giving you complete control of the bike. We covered almost 200kms in the Himalayas and found the bike to be one of the most comfortable adventure touring motorcycles currently on offer in the country. The braking set up on the bike is progressive and is facilitated by a 300mm disc in the front and a 240mm disc in the rear. The front disc has been borrowed from another Enfield motorcycle but has been fine tuned for the Himalayan. We felt the brakes were well suited for off road conditions but while on tarmac having the option of an ABS would be very welcomed. The Himalayan is being offered in two colour schemes – Granite and Snow. Royal Enfield has also introduced meticulously designed, purpose built protective riding gear that caters to the long range tourer travelling to unpredictable places, terrains and climates. We found the gear immensely useful as it protected us from the elements during our road tests. The gear kept us safe from snow, hail, rain and sub zero temperatures as well. The admirable capability of the Himalayan combined with the protection offered from the riding gear enabled us to explore the wild untamed mountains. For me the bike marks a new age of engineering for Royal Enfield and has definitely set the standard for off-road capability in its class. It has set itself a new benchmark, a Himalayan benchmark! MI

INTERVIEW WITH
SIDDHARTHA LAL MD & CEO, EICHER MOTORS LTD.
Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER / Photography: AFSAR BAIG Your bikes have been conquering the terrain of the Himalayas for a while now. Is this a cumulative result of all the bikes going there and coming back? Yes, Enfield has been in the Himalayas since 1955 when we first came to India and the Indian Army took the Bullet to the Himalayas. For the last few decades Royal Enfield has been definitive for adventurers in the Himalayas. That’s been the inspiration behind this motorcycle. So we said let’s do a new motorcycle absolutely ground up which embodies what our feeling towards the Himalayas is. To make a motorcycle that is purposeful which does the Job of traversing the Himalayas in a very good manner. If you look at it from top to bottom and front to back, this motorcycle with its suspension and travel as well as the big wheels, the monoshock and the low end torque of the engine embodies what we feel will make a good adventure touring motorcycle in the Himalayas. It is also there to make sure it’s easy to ride on a daily basis. That is what the Himalayan is all about. Do you feel this bike will be popular for those who want to tour the Himalayas or it will also be popular amongst those who are not really aiming to get out there and do so much touring? The Himalayas is our inspiration and that is what draws people out with its beautiful landscape. It is also the most difficult landscape in the country. But really this motorcycle is great for any adventure because anywhere you go in India, by and large you find some decent roads, some bad roads and some off-road conditions. In fact in the cities you will find a bit of that environment. The motorcycle has been made in a way which makes it easy to ride on everyday basis as well. This is not an extreme motorcycle, it has low end torque, it is not fussy, it is forgiving and is easy to manoeuvre as well. The Himalayan has been designed in such a way that it can be ridden on a daily basis. But even if you are going for
38 | MOTOWN INDIA | APRIL 2016
little weekend rides or if you are going for long distance or pan India rides, it should be able to all those jobs with equal easy. We have plenty of luggage options as well like panniers at the back and facilities for jerry cans in the front as well. It is in our opinion an accomplished adventure tourer and can also do your daily job really well. What kind of inquiries have you been getting for this product and what has been the response in the consumer base surrounding the Himalayan since it has been a while since the hype has been there in the market? Till now none of them have got their hands on it and so it more the idea of the Himalayan which is interesting to people and more interesting than I would have imagined from the start. People are interested and excited about it. They are curious about various aspects of it. The media persons here are going to help them get the first idea of what where about of this motorcycle will be. We are encouraging people to take a test ride and don’t just put a deposit for the bike. We are going to try and have tracks in as many cities as we can where a bit of off roading can be done. We want people to understand the motorcycle before they actually buy it. That is the idea and hopefully people will warm up to the idea of adventure. It is the idea of adventuring which is important to us. But here is an anecdote we were discussing about the wide spread popularity of this bike. It was in January and I was travelling from Goa to Bengaluru via Hampi. In a village in Karnataka, a boy comes up to me and says “Sir, this Himalayan?” the bike was covered and there was no branding on it. I was sitting and having coconut water on the side of the road and this chap knew which bike it was. So my point is that it has already permeated down into smaller towns and cities. People who are adventure minded are already seeking it out and this is interesting for us. So this is a very refined machine compared to the previous Enfields
that are largely considered raw and rugged. There are also a lot of talks about a 750cc engine as well so is this a definite direction we are looking at where you bring out sleeker looking bikes? Well I personally would not call it sleek, I would not go to that extent and it is chunky enough. It is also purposeful in its look and nature. The refinement comes from the way we have constructed the engine. We have an overhead cam in the engine. We have a counter balancer which takes off most of the primary unbalanced forces. So you have a very refined engine which helps you go hours and hours with very low vibrations and therefore it aids the long distance nature of what we are trying to accomplish. So yes, it is to that extent a much more refined vehicle and certainly this is part of the direction because consumers always want something which keeps stepping up the pace and we are going to keep moving forward. Your company is also moving into accessories in a big way. How has this business been for you and how do you see it picking up in the near future? For us motorcycling is about the motorcycle as well as everything around it. So when you are in gear it makes you confident and protects you and when you have a helmet and boots it gives you that assurance that if anything happens you are relatively safe. That is a more enjoyable ride in our opinion. On the Himalayan from day one it was setup to have panniers and luggage at the back and front. The entire idea was for it not to be a juggad where people are trying to figure out something and rope something on it. That is what the idea was to make it fixed and to make it engineered as well as robust in its capability. So you don’t need to think about it. You go plug the sub frame, put on the panniers and ride. So we included all this to serve our customers better and to give them a better ride. All of this was made to give it at a price point which is accessible to the rider and is not over priced.

MOTORSPORT Philippos Matthai wins 3rd JK Tyre Arunachal Festival of Speed The 3rd JK Tyre Arunachal Festival of Speed concluded with Philippos Matthai of Delhi winning the overall title after stringing together consistent performances in the Auto Cross, Hill Climb and Rally Sprint events. 4th Edition of JK Tyre Himalayan Drive set hills ablaze
India’s only International T.S.D. (Time-Speed-Distance) CrossCountry Rally held in North Bengal and Bhutan culminated to a thrilling finish after an intense five-day rally. The first three editions of Himalayan Drive-- held in March 2013, January 2014 and January 2015-- witnessed tremendous success and this edition took the event to a higher level. This time the event saw the vehicles crossing the international borders. Kolkata duo Sudip and Arindam Ghosh championed the 4th edition of the JK Tyre Himalyan Drive, notching 568 penalty seconds, just eight seconds short of their closest rivals Jogendra Kumar Jaiswal and Prasenjit Roy who had a score of 576 penalty seconds. The other close call was between the third and fourth rankers. Pratik Sirkar and Debasish Ghosh who had a final score of 832 penalty seconds finished third, while Rajiv Sarkar and Chandu Sekhar followed close behind with 836 penalty seconds to finish fourth.
Di Grassi stripped of Mexico win in Formula E The familiar Mercedes 1-2 formula comes to rule again! The 2016 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix saw the all too familiar Mercedes winning formula in play as the team came in first and second with Nico Rosberg and his team mate Lewis Hamilton winning the race in Melbourne. Rosberg’s victory was his second in Melbourne, coming two years after his first and 31 years after his father Keke won the very first race on Australian soil in Adelaide, said an F1 report. Rosberg has now won four successive races, his winning streak starting in Mexico in 2015. The Mercedes team has been victorious for seven straight races. The race was dominated by Ferrari in the beginning but a mid-race stoppage after a huge accident involving Fernando Alonso resulted in Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg scoring an unlikely victory. Team mate Lewis Hamilton too recovered from a bad start to finish second. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel came in third after 57 laps of Albert Park.

Lucas di Grassi who was announced winner of the Mexican FormulaE race was excluded from the result of the Mexico City ePrix. The victory was handed over to Jerome D’Ambrosio. Di Grassi’s Abt Schaeffler car that he used for the first part of the race, was found to weigh 886.2kg, 1.8kg under the 888kg minimum. Abt decided not to appeal the decision. The decision meant di Grassi is now 22 points behind Sebastien Buemi, who was promoted to second place. Nico Prost moved up to third, and the Renault e.dams driver also gained two more points for setting the Visa Fastest Lap after D’Ambrosio’s best effort was removed for being set while cutting a chicane. Loic Duval remained classified fourth but was handed a 15-second penalty for repeatedly cutting the chicane and then ignoring the black and white flag he was shown for this offence. Robin Frijns was promoted to fifth, Sam Bird to sixth, Daniel Abt to seventh, Nick Heidfeld to eighth, Stephane Sarrazin to ninth, while Bruno Senna collected the final point in 10th.

Royal Enfield Darcha Riding Gear Review Riding the Royal Enfield Himalayan in the mountains at temperatures close to 3 degrees Celsius was a challenge. But the Darcha riding gear which we had donned in the morning was proving its weight in gold. The gear comprised of a four season touring jacket, textile trousers and gloves. The gear has been designed and made by Royal Enfield in collaboration with Rev’it. The jacket is made using outer shell polyester 600D with water resistant PWR|Wax 500D coating. It also includes a detachable insulated thermal liner detachable waterproof and breathable Hydratex|G-liner. The design includes ribbed stretch panels at elbows and shoulders which I felt improved the flexibility and wearing comfort of the gear tremendously. The touring jacket also gets reflective strips on the upper arms, chest and back for night riding visibility. The jacket doesn’t just protect you from the elements but also offers protection in case of a fall. The outer shell is abrasion resistant and durable while you also get Knox Flexiform CE 1 approved protectors for the shoulders and elbows as well as an EVA foam back protector which is upgradable to a CE approved Sastec. The jacket is not only protective and comfy but also has a great deal of utility built into it. You get ventilation zippers at the back, chest and arms as well as adjustment tabs at the waist, hip and arms to give a better fit depending on the
www.motownindia.com
user. It also has multiple storage pockets on the inside and outside as well as a large storage pocket at the back. I had stored maps and my mobile phones in these pockets and despite the incessant rain all of it was bone dry. The price tag attached to it is for INR 21,999 but I feel it is definitely worth the cost because without it I don’t think I would have survived the journey. Like the Darcha four seasons jacket the touring textile trousers are also very versatile and offer good protection. The outer shell of the trousers is made of polyester 500D with a water resistant PWR|wax 500D coating. The trouser also comes with a detachable insulated thermal liner and an integrated waterproof/ breathable Hydratex|G-liner. The Trouser also gets a reflective liner as well for night riding visibility. On the safety front it has an abrasion resistant and durable outer shell as well as Knox Flexiform CE 1 approved knee protectors and a Seesoft CE1 approved Hip protector. The touring trousers are quite comfy to wear and kept me safe from the elements. The fitting was quite good and easy to wear or take off. The quality of materials used was good because even in sub zero temperatures I was quite warm and despite incessant rain the water resistant layer worked wonders and kept me dry. The trousers also have adjustable knee protector pockets which are quite handy when your waist size is big like me. The trousers are also adjustable at the waist and the bottom hem to personalise the fitting. You also get slit pockets which are quite easily accessible and can connect the trouser to the jacket using a zipper. The Darcha 4 Seasons Touring Textile Trousers cost Rs. 13,500 but are definitely a must have if you plan on taking on the mountains. The overall feel and fit of the gear is great. It is not only comfy but very practical as well. The gear also offers personalised fitment and offers plenty of waterproof pockets which I felt
was a big thumbs up considering the amount of things we require and need to keep handy when we go on a ride. The overall weight of the gear is not so bothersome and it is definitely effective in keeping you warm and dry. While the bike assisted us taking on the terrain it was the gear which enabled us to be physically capable of enduring the journey. The Himalayan along with the Darcha gear is probably the best combination to use when heading to the hills.

CAYENNE P
orsche’s uber rich world consists of iconic models like the 911, Boxter, Cayman, 918 Spyder, Macan, Panamera and the Cayenne. It’s a common perception that these cars are best taken on a race track and made to scream their hearts out. Their engines waste no time in generating enough power to set the tracks ablaze! But some of the Porsche models like the Macan and Cayenne SUVs are also known for their off-road capabilities.
42 | MOTOWN INDIA | APRIL 2016
Keeping this in mind, the Porsche India Delhi office invited a few journalists to test drive and experience their Big Boys on a specially made off-road track on the outskirts of Delhi. Sitting behind the wheels of an SUV that costs upwards of Rs 1 crore, I was really keen to test the capabilities of this rich brute of a vehicle. It was a Cayenne Diesel model I was driving. Just to give you a few technical specifications, the maximum power output of the three-litre (2,967 cc) V6 engine is 245 hp @ 3,800-4,400 rpm whilst the maximum torque
is 550 Nm @1,750-2,750 rpm. The engine is mated to an 8 speed Tiptronic S Transmission. The car can achieve a top speed of 218 kmph. The Cayenne has a monocoque lightweight body in a combination of steel, aluminium and magnesium. The car sits on 255/55 R 18 tyres. But we were here not to test the speed but its off-road manners. The Porsche Cayenne is offered in India in several variants that include the Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S Diesel, Cayenne, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, Cayenne Turbo

S and the Cayenne GTS. Porsche claims that the new Cayenne models have increased performance and torque coupled with a lower fuel consumption compared to its predecessors. The short course consisted of the usual rumble strips to test out the NVH levels, uphill and downhill hurdles to test out the hill-hold and hill descend functions respectively, the deep pits full of water to test out its wading capabilities and different types of steep angle courses to test out the traction control and suspension of the vehicle. There was also a short strip for acceleration and sudden braking in order to test the ABS feature of the car. On a personal front, I found the experience a cake walk. Having attempted similar challenges in both an artificial environment and in the real world (like the desert challenge in Rajasthan etc) in vehicles that cost a fraction of a Porsche car and fitted with below par mechanisms in terms of dependability, driving the Porsche Cayenne was like a walk in the park. The electronics in the car made it such an obedient vehicle and all the mechanical parts contributed towards its sturdiness. The 3 litre diesel engine Porsche Cayenne had some splendid features to boast of that made off-road driving a pleasure. It is no doubt a sports car with some well endowed off-road capabilities. As we moved on from the regular tarmac to the off-road track, all it needed was a tug of a button and the air suspension ensured that the
www.motownindia.com
ride height increased accordingly. As for taking on the rough terrain, there is this Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) along with all-wheel drive that comes into play almost immediately. The Porsche Cayenne can handle uneven terrain with great ease. Even in extreme conditions when the vehicle has just one or two wheels on the ground and is tilted precariously, its intelligent suspensions management system provides the right amount of traction to the right wheels to pull the massive vehicle back on the ground. The car was also tested on tracks that had a side inclination of more than 30 degree angle. The heavily tilted car remained well planted on the ground as it drove along with considerable ease. So much for the Cayenne’s great off-road capabilities!

Report: P.THARYAN & JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER / Photography: AFSAR BAIG
his race was not simply about “Make in India”, rather it was more about “Making an Indian”. For generations, the trucking community in India has been exploited to the hilt. Underpaid, long working hours, miserable
working conditions and a crumbling infrastructure to operate in, the job of a truck driver in India was far from glamorous. Of late, with truck manufacturers launching modern trucks in the country and with fleet operators providing a better deal to their drivers, their lives had begun to improve a lot. Glamour, however, was a

farfetched dream for them. All this changed in 2016, with Tata Motors hosting the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship Season 3 with Indian drivers. For once, the popularity of the professional British drivers took a back seat as the thousands of spectators at the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in
Greater Noida rooted for the local boys as they raced their hearts out in the massive Tata Motors trucks. Former FMSCI President Vicky Chandhok who is a prominent figure in the Indian motorsport arena, described the journey of these Indian drivers as one from the “highway to the speedway”. When Tata Motors announced

that it was keen to train and promote its truck drivers for the T1 race, not many truck drivers were enthused. A few of them reluctantly joined in. Finally after several months of training and several qualifying rounds, 12 of them were shortlisted for the final race. While 17 Indian racers

participated in the Level 4 of the first T1 Racer Program (TRP), only 12 Indian drivers were selected to compete on the final day. The T1 Racer programme (TRP) was organised by Tata Motors for the very first time. The final 12 shortlisted drivers competed for glory in Season 3 of the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship 2016
held at BIC on March 20, 2016. Talking about the T1 race Programme, Ravi Pisharody, Executive Director, Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, said, “Trucking is vitally important to the nation’s economy and the T1 Racer Programme has been designed to help put a name and face to the men, who deliver
essential commodities across the country every day. Since inception in 2014, with the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship, we had made a conscious decision to give Indian drivers an opportunity to be part of this prestigious event...” R. Creation, Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors, said, “In season 1 we created history, by hosting the very first truck race here in India. In season 2, we showcased race trucks that were ‘Bigger, Better & Faster’. In season 3, Tata Motors is unfolding a new chapter in the history of Indian trucking, with a theme of ‘India to the World’ involving Indian talent, and is all set to create history yet again, in the one of the world largest commercial vehicle markets....” The 12 Indian drivers selected for Season 3 of the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship were – Nagarjuna A, Bacchu Singh, Rabinder Yadav, Bhag Chand, Rajkumar Mahato, Jitendra Singh, MD Parvez, Jagat Singh, Anand, Mohd. Iliyas, Malkeet Singh and Syed Akram Pasha. The Tata trucks that were part of the race

had undergone several changes in the 2016 race. Some of these changes included reduced centre of gravity by 100 mm, to improve dynamic stability at high speeds, new lighter suspension system, to improve the ride and handling characteristics, new improved shock absorbers, for stability during high speed corner turns, improved brake cooling system with jet nozzles, new lightweight aluminium fuel tank and water tanks, new tyres of 315/70 R 22.5 introduced in place of 315/80 R 22.5, from last season, among others.
THE FINAL DAY On the final day Jagat Singh of Mercurio Pallia Logistics and Nagarjuna A of Shekar Logistics created Indian motorsports history when they won the maiden race T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship, organised for Indian truck
drivers. The Indian drivers competed in the Super Class category comprising of some of the most experienced Indian drivers. These drivers were selected through one of the most comprehensive training and selection programmes, for Indian drivers, from Tata Motors fleet customers’ operations across the country. Trained by some of the best race instructors in India, roped in by MOMA, over a period of three months, the T1 Prima race saw the trucking heroes take home Rs 10 lakh. This amount was awarded to each of the first place winners of the two Super Class category races. Thirty-three-years-old Anand who works with Supreme Auto Carrier and who was among those who managed a podium finish told Motown India after the race, “We have learnt a lot here, our trainers have taught us how to

drive with cones using a smaller vehicle. They showed us how to turn the vehicle through the obstacles. Then we were given camper vehicles and then later the Prima trucks. As we improved, they removed the cones. Later we were made to practise alone on the track and then all the drivers were made to practise together on the track. So I am really happy. Anand feels that all the training will help him a lot in the coming years. “The greatest lesson I have learnt here is that at almost every corner and turn my vehicle used to spin out. Even today in the morning practise my truck spun out, my coaches kept telling me how to tackle these turns but I was relying more on my instinct and knowledge. I always think of doing something new and even today I was trying something new on the track and then I spun out. So I asked my coaches why this tends to happen. So he said that the tyres right now are cold and are new tyres. That is why they are slipping and had the tyres been warm then it would not slip. Now the

first batch of drivers had already practised and raced with these trucks so when I drove in the race the way I did in the morning practise session the truck did not lose balance and that was really good for me,” he pointed out after winning the race. Like Anand, the other drivers too were very grateful to their “Guruji” for the training imparted to them. The skills will definitely come in handy while they go about doing their routine driving across the length and breadth of the country. Racing is just one part of the story; it’s the discipline they will nurture and treasure as they go about doing their job behind the wheels of their load bearing Tata trucks. Meanwhile, for the British drivers, having finished fourth in the first 8-lap race of the two Pro Class races comprising of international drivers, David Jenkins of Team Tata Technologies took top honours in the final 20lap race, with Rick Collett and Graham Powell both from Team Tata Cummins, taking second and third place respectively, in an action

packed race. Mat Summerfield of Team Castrol Vecton, winner of the first 8-lap race, clocked the fastest lap of 1:50:691 seconds, in the second race, around the 3.1 kilometers race track. While Season 3 witnessed Indian drivers competing in black Prima race trucks, which were identical to each other – in look and built, the 12 coloured trucks competing in the Pro Class of the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship Season 3, represented six teams, who participated in the previous two seasons of the championship, with one new team – Tata Motors Finance. INTERVIEW WITH
JACQUES ESCULIER
CHAIRMAN AND CEO, WABCO HOLDINGS INC.
How would you describe the progress of truck racing in India? I would say it is an increasingly popular event. In fact, last year’s T1 Prima Truck race was extremely well attended. This year the trucks are lighter and they will be able to touch speeds of up to 130kmph which for a truck is a breakthrough level of speed. It’s not only a race there are a lot of other events around the race which are very exciting for people. Your company offers braking solutions and you just spoke of increasing speeds. For high speeds you need very good brakes and I’m sure your company provides the right ones. So is there a difference in the products you provide for the trucks here and the ones
which you provide for trucks running on the roads? Actually ABS is now mandatory on medium and heavy duty trucks in India and the system which we put on those racing trucks is exactly the same for every truck which comes off the assembly line in India or around the world. This is a very basic feature in enhancing the safety of commercial vehicles on the roads. So the technology is the same. What about racing trucks around the world? Are the products going into those trucks similar? Sometimes we offer EBS for European trucks but the functionality is the same and on those trucks we also offer products and systems which we install on general
trucks over there as well. We don’t have special systems for those special cases. We want to actually demonstrate like Tata that whatever we provide on normal trucks off the production line is stretchable and works very well in extremely demanding situations like truck racing. When it comes to India you have five manufacturing centres and a software and engineering centre? Do these centres and manufacturing outlets also contribute to the global markets as well? Well actually believe it or not we have more Wabco people in India than in any other country in the world. We sure have a very strong presence and share of the market here locally in India but we are also very rapidly increasing the supply chain and leveraging the supply chain from India to serve markets globally. For example we manufacture air compressors for one of the key global manufacturers and we send them from Chennai to all the centres in the world from where these trucks are manufactured. We also increasingly manufacture air suspensions for luxury cars and SUVs out of India to support manufacturers around the world. We have actuators which we have been designing and manufacturing in India. These will end up on trucks of a major leading brand in the US. So India is more and more becoming a pillar of engineering and supply chain for Wabco for sure and also more importantly for Wabco globally. Is your software and engineering centre in
60 | MOTOWN INDIA | APRIL 2016
India integrated to your other global centres? Firstly we now have a lot more software developers here in India versus what we have in Germany. For example, we are developing the latest braking system for global manufacturers, one of them being Daimler. The majority of the software related to this braking system is generated in India. That is to tell you how fundamental these people are for the progress of Wabco and they are themselves bringing a lot of breakthrough ideas and technology as well as better ways of building software. So they are contributing a lot to the future success of Wabco. Apart from supplying to OEMs, what is your presence in the aftermarket? We take support of fleets very seriously because for us it is a major part of the value proposition we bring to any truck, bus or trailer manufacturer in the world. It is one thing to deliver a differentiated products to the OEMs to be mounted on the commercial vehicles but it’s also as important to support those products and provide technical support as well as spare parts in the field. Wabco has committed to grow in this area for decades. Not only do we deliver support and spare parts but are also helping fleets to connect to their ground base thorough these fleet management solutions. We have acquired a leading company in Europe and we are actually introducing some elements of fleet management solutions here in India which are very well aligned with the local requirements from fleets. We want to make ourselves the best partners of fleets overall.
www.motownindia.com
COVER REPORT How significant is truck racing to your company? There are a lot of interesting outcomes we have when we are participating in a race like this. Firstly, the pride of the Wabco team, because it demonstrates how we have brought a
differentiated level of technology, safety and efficiency contribution to the truck manufacturers to the point where they want themselves to highlight that Wabco is one partner to them. So I think there is a lot of pride generated within the Wabco
team. Secondly, it also sends a strong signal to the region, to India at least that we are a major truck manufacturer as they bring vehicles into this racing environment which we all know is very demanding particularly for braking systems. I think it is
also a sends very strong signal to the global world that Wabco is part of an event like this. It is very hard to find a truck on earth which does not feature Wabco products and systems. Thus, we are also supporting all other manufacturers in India.
P KANIAPPAN VICE PRESIDENT, WABCO INDIA
Wabco’s business depends a lot on the progress of the commercial vehicle industry. Is the CV industry out of the woods in india?
educate the drivers of the different fleets about the dos and don’ts in order to ensure its proper effectiveness?
The year 2015 has been a very positive one. The air brake segment where we are playing a major role, has grown by more than 25pc. The base was low, but the growth has been nevertheless, very impressive. Particularly in the heavy duty segment, the growth has been very prominent.
The advantage we have is the connectivity in the field. We have touch points at every 100km. We connect with the mechanics, with the drivers and even the fleet managers. Since our core value is the safety we provide, this is one of our key elements of training. To support this, we have also set up 200 authorised service centres. At the end of the day, the people should be told about this technology. We have an extensive network that takes care of the training in this field.
Your company is the first to introduce ABS. Now that it is mandatory here for commercial vehicles, what’s been the demand for it? The ABS mandate came into force from October 2015. We have worked with all OEMs to introduce this new technology to the Indian market in a very smooth and affordable manner. ABS is meant to reduce the accidents on road. The good thing is that Wabco has the capability to retrofit all vehicles that are on the road with ABS. We have fitted around 47,000 vehicles, many of them hazardous goods carriers through the retrofit route which we started five years ago. Essentially, we are trying to make the trucks safer on the road. Fitting ABS on new vehicles alone will not reduce accidents. When you retrofit such a product, do you also
www.motownindia.com
Does Wabco make products for segments beyond commercial vehicles? Largely we are there in the CV segment. We have a few products for the car segment. One such product is the vacuum pump. We have one of the most advanced products which meets the Euro IV regulation. We have secured some business from the Indian OEMs. We are connecting with other players in this segment and we are trying to grow this business in a big way. We will also be the manufacturing base for vacuum pumps for our global requirements. You have five manufacturing

doing business in India since 1962, how do you perceive the current times? Exciting?
The advantage of Wabco is the flexibility and agility with which we create capacities. We have been working on lean manufacturing principles. We are creating capacity as per our needs. As of today our utilisation levels are around 85pc. We anticipate the market demand and accordingly create our capacities.
Very much. The industry is transforming primarily towards technology now. A few years ago it was more of a cost focussed environment. But today with a lot of focus from the government, safety becoming a key element of the value, technology becomes a differentiator. Since we became a part of Wabco global network it gives us access to the entire global portfolio of the advanced technologies, which is one by one coming to India. First is ABS, which is a base technology. On that we can build many more functionalities to provide value to the customers, in terms of safety and in many cases efficiencies also. Wabco also provides AMT for commercial vehicles. We have already partnered with many OEMs and we are ready to launch
What about exports? We have a plant in Mahindra City which is exclusively for exports. Today we export close to Rs 500 crore. We are trying to make India as a base for manufacturing and supply chain, apart from engineering for the world. In that pursuit, exports from India will be a key growth driver for us. Your company has been
this product in a big way in the Indian market. The complete range of advanced technologies that are available in Europe is now available in India or is going to be here. We shall be able to offer these products, leveraging our cost competitiveness, redesigning this at a cost level where the market can accept, etc. In the process, the market also moves to a higher standard, whether it is quality, delivery performance, project execution. This also gives us an opportunity to work with all OEMs. We are ahead of the market already in terms of the standards. This provides us the best opportunity to the most preferred supplier to all the Indian OEMs. Mr Jacques Esculier, CEO of Wabco Holdings Inc mentioned that being a part of the Tata T1 Prima Race is a matter of pride for
everyone at Wabco here in India. What is your view on that? Absolutely. One aspect is that it is a natural extension of our association with Tata Motors for the last 50 years. The second is that most of our people in Wabco know Tata because we work with them. But we want our entire aftermarket team, our drivers, our mechanics, people who are using our products to feel proud of being part of this race. Racing per se is addressed towards drivers, mechanics, and those in the field and they feel proud to be associated with this brand. With India drivers competing in the race, this entire exercise gets a lot more meaningful for your company? That is the main objective because our business is built around the drivers.
JK Tyre new low aspect ratio tyres add stability to the trucks JK Tyre & Industries Ltd. partnered with Tata Motors for the Tata T1 Prima Truck Racing championship for the third consecutive year in 2016. The Jetracing tyre from the company is the first-ever truck racing tyre in India. The Jetracing tyre uses the new design technique of ‘Tapered tread profile’ completed with ‘HE wire’ and ‘special wire wrap’. With Jetracing, JK Tyre has reinforced its truck radial technology and motorsport leadership in India. The tyres used in the first two seasons were 315/80R22.5 size. In the 2016 season, the tyre size was 315/70R22.5 which is approved for European and British truck racing. The lower aspect ratio of the tyre 70 series in comparison to 80 series is based on the requirement of the vehicle. This helps in keeping the centre
of gravity of the vehicle lower thereby leading to better stability during cornering. The tyre is designed with

special low heat and high traction compound to meet the most gruelling braking conditions of a racing circuit. Overall the tyres
have been designed to take speeds more than 160 km/h with extra reinforced steel belts and dual layer tread compound.

TECHNOLOGY
Hitachi, Honda tamper proof device to curb drunk driving Hitachi and Honda Motor Co have announced they have successfully developed a prototype of a portable alcohol detector that is tamperresistant as it can distinguish human breath from alternative gases and that can be integrated into smart key. This device is capable of distinctively detecting the saturated water vapour from human breath and accurately measuring alcohol level within 3 seconds once a driver exhales breath onto the device. Hitachi and Honda jointly collaborated on this technology development in an effort to create the ideal alcohol detector. They also developed a system that can show the alcohol level measured by the detector on the vehicle’s display
panel. It can become an ignition interlock to stop a vehicle starting its engine when it detects a driver under the influence of alcohol. The effort to prevent or stop drunk driving is global and is an on-going focus of progress in safe driving technology. In Japan, transportation operators are required to use an alcohol detector to test whether professional drivers are under the influence of alcohol before they begin their shifts. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched and directed the development of ignition interlock technology that connects alcohol detectors to a vehicle’s engine.
The prototype developed by Hitachi and Honda has advantages over the other ignition interlocks. These other systems require drivers to perform the test from the driver’s seat once they are already inside the vehicle. With the Hitachi/Honda device, drivers can measure their alcohol level from anywhere and, importantly, prior to entering their vehicle, thus reducing the temptation to drive. In addition, the Hitachi/Honda device can confirm that the applied gas is human exhaled breath and can detect the level of alcohol at the same time, an enhancement over currently available devices. Advancements like these will contribute to reducing or eliminating instances of drunk driving.

INTERVIEW
INTERVIEW WITH
CHRIS REIDER, Vice President, Global Engineering, Packard Electrical/ Electronic Architecture, Delphi Packard (Shanghai) ARUN AWASTHY, President and Managing Director, India, Delphi Automotive Systems Pvt Ltd MARKUS KERKHOFF, Global Engineering Director DCS, Delphi Electrical/ Electronic Architecture, Delphi Deutschland GmbH
Report: P.THARYAN & Photography: AFSAR BAIG The vehicle on the road is no more just a mode of transportation. It offers so much more in terms of entertainment and safety. We also hear of autonomous driving. In short, it means a lot on the electric/ electronic architecture (E/E) front. Is it an exciting phase for your company? Chris Reider (CR): It is probably the most exciting times that I can remember in the automotive industry right now. The industry is in a transformation as we all have read. The drive for increased safety, the movement towards consumer connectivity and the integration of consumer electronics into the vehicle as well as the demand of the industry mega trends for better fuel efficiency. All of this is impacting vehicle E/E architecture in a significant way. So we are seeing some very exciting things happening in the industry that is driving a whole transformation in terms of the technology and in particular the change in vehicle software requirements to drive this. For example in the area of fuel efficiency the drive towards electrification is moving into hybrid electric vehicles -- EV 48 volt vehicles. It is moving our product portfolio in a different direction. While we are downsizing so many products we are also increasing the size of other products to move a significant amount of power. What is also coming with it is new opportunities for product portfolio to support these megatrends. Yes, active safety is really dominating our development activities for now. The move towards more autonomous driving is driven by the need in the industry to reduce fatalities. With more
www.motownindia.com
Chris Reider vehicles coming on the roads every year, it’s going to get much more difficult for the automotive industry to protect people. So we are in a transformation of moving functionality from the driver to the vehicle and we are confident that that is a significant amount of development in the form of electronics, active safety features, sensing systems and so forth. When we talk of just the E/E space typically how many different kinds of parts are
made which join together to get under the hood or other parts of a vehicle? CR: There are thousands of parts and this depends on the level of vehicle. So the number of parts and the contents will vary from premium vehicles to full sized trucks and SUVs, down to smaller A segment vehicles. But the electrical system is extremely complex. There are miles and miles of cables in every vehicle and hundreds of connection systems and thousands of
terminals in every vehicle. All of these parts come together and are packaged. They are not just designed electrically but need to be packaged in a vehicle in a reliable way to achieve the quality standards that we have come to be expected to provide. Suppose a car which comes with a particular kind of entertainment system, adds on a few safety parts like a safety bag or some other critical parts, do you have
APRIL 2016 | MOTOWN INDIA | 71
INTERVIEW to then reinvent what you supply or is it some kind of an add-on? CR: Well it depends on how you have designed the original architecture. A lot of the architectures which we are developing now are scalable. So they have the ability to add on features and functionality. So we are developing electronics and computers today that have the versatility and ability through software downloads perhaps even over the air downloads to change functionality. We are working on computers today which will be used on the platform for fully autonomous vehicles. That is why it is very important to think through your long term plan and with electrical architectures you can design them to be scalable. They always come with effort and a considerable development when you are re-packaging vehicles to add functionality. But the best way to do it is with early designs. So when you say scalable, does it also mean that Delphi needs to be a little ahead of the curb in terms of technology offerings or are you dependant on what the OEM does or are you doing your hard work while they make their future vehicles. Are you also developing new stuff so that you can offer it before OEMs start making them? CR: Usually with customers you work on custom solutions for those OEM customers. So the architectures may be unique to their designs and their vehicle styling and so forth. But Delphi also does its own development and we do our own portfolio of products and capabilities which become building blocks that we can offer to our customers. We are not a car manufacturer but we recently built an autonomous vehicle that we drove from San Francisco to New York city about 99pc driverless. So we took on this task in order to create the capability and also generate data
and information by going through that experience. This development and this experience will be shared and passed on to our OEMs when we have the opportunity to co develop their electrical systems. It is a similar situation with 48 volts which is a new trend for mild hybrids moving towards 48 volt systems. We have developed our own 48 volt vehicle on the platform of a 12 volt system. When we move on to a 48 volt does it mean that every part that goes into a system changes? CR: No, not right away. So you will see some of the systems will convert to 48 volt but for some of them like air-conditioning system for example, it will happen Arun Awasthy over time. The advantage and the opportunity with 48 volts is that all of these ago like 15 years ago to invest in sub systems can convert to 48 India for its capabilities in product volts you can drive significant development. We were able to do improvement in fuel efficiency that effectively by leveraging it and because you are not driving the doing work for other regions with power of these sub systems from our local capabilities here but it the engine but you are able to do is also positioning as well so that it electrically. And there maybe we can do full service design and some tradeoffs like infotainment development here locally. So the which may stay 12 volt because reason for the event today is for of practical reasons. So the cost the expansion of our connection benefit analysis will always be systems and our engineering site something the OEMs may have to here in Chennai where we have consider when making decisions just expanded the R&D facility but we see that over time you and have just added full service may see more and more systems automotive testing equipment convert to 48 volts in the area of capability. So we are now able to the mild hybrid segment. develop here locally just about any connection system in our How critical is India in your portfolio of products at Delphi--entire Delphi operations From product design to simulation especially when it comes to and analysis to tool design and product development? tool build which we do here in CR: India is extremely critical for India as well. We can also do full our business. The Indian market is service validation testing as well. a high growth market and we are The capability that we have here expecting a significant amount of is growing and it is strategic and our revenue to come from local we will continue to invest. software front. So we have got a very large software team here in India that does development work for global Delphi Automotive. Arun Awasthy (AA) From the engineering capability now we have under EA two technical centers. One is a DCS which we have now upgraded and added the validation lab. The other is for wire harnesses in Pune. Our manufacturing capability has also grow from one plant has grown to three plants for wire harnesses which is located in now north and south as well as the rest of the country where the automotive hubs are located. Our connection system plants as well as the global tool room are also here and these are the capabilities which we have invested in over the years and are now growing. Our R&D team is already doing advanced engineering work for the globe. So their capability and skill level are already there. We are closely working with OEMs as co designers and supporting them.

INTERVIEW With your vast experience and observation on how the industry has eveolved in such a big way, do you envisage a time where cars will fly? CR: I see for sure that the vehicles are going to be much more heavily driven by software. So the influences of consumer electronics and the communication from the vehicle to the infrastructure and information fed to the vehicle via the cloud will drive behaviors and safety systems. We are going to see evolution in that area. I can’t say right now at what point are we going to see more vehicles on the road with no drivers, I think there are a lot of challenges in the industry to build the infrastructure and to build the safety systems in vehicles before we are ready for that. But I can tell you things are moving fast and it is an amazing time in our business because we are able to now leverage tech companies and technology all around the world which will come together to provide automotive systems solutions. The ability to communicate from a car to the cloud and the software which goes with that will be incredibly important. The challenges of cyber security as we get more dependent on over the air downloads to vehicles and upgrade software and safety systems, we have got to be able to protect the integrity of the software. That is going to be a big challenge. The level of government regulation around the world is also going to drive the speed of some of these advancements as well. I think it is an exciting and the technology is moving at light speeds. So our position is that we are going to be ready for it and we are investing appropriately in the technologies which we believe are going to be needed for OEM customers in the long term and near term. We are moving towards autonomous driving, technologically a lot of
www.motownindia.com
things are happening. Will India be able to absorb that technology in the way the western world is doing or will it take a long time before it catches up? AA: The government wants BS IV norms to get implemented by 2020 which is still under discussions. There are a few technologies which need to be implemented like mandatory airbags, rear sensors for parking and cameras for parking and fuel economy regulations. There are safety aspects which need to be take into consideration and implemented. The government has been discussing things and rear view cameras are in demand. Most OEMs (car manufacturers) are either discussing it or implementing it. Since most of the Indian vehicle manufacturers Markus Kerkhoff are exporting vehicles to many developed centers in India. We started one countries in Europe and in Bangalore 1995 with 10-15 products which are made engineers and now there are by Delphi are embedded in 950 engineers. They are doing them. So does it mean that active safety programming and they are at par with global infotainment programming from quality standards? AA: Yes, all our products and there for the global programmes. manufacturing facilities are of the We have added two more after same bill of process. As earlier that. The DCS centre which we stated whatever engineering will strategically grow and a wire centers are linked with the global harness technical centre as well. engineering. So they follow the So the answer to your question same specifications in all the is yes we are doing work for the engineering places. We have a region and the globe as well. standard specifications for the From the company’s perspective equipment in engineering and there are more opportunities to manufacturing, so the quality of grow them. the product is the same either you take from India, Shanghai or Can you throw some light Europe. Markus Kerkhoff : The reason why we are here in Chennai is Do you see Delphi globally the re opening of the enlarged now shifting some of its facility here --- Chennai global critical work into India? engineering center. We are using AA: We have three technical engineering capabilities for the
local market but also for the global market. So components which are being designed here for local markets and customers and local needs but we are also using the same methodology, capability and skills for our global tool room and use this globally as well for global customers. The methodology which we do have here and the capabilities which we have here start from advanced development to serial production to tool manufacturing to serial production. So the entire chain of the entire engineer process we are going to do here in Chennai. In fact we started 15 years ago with normal print improvements and we improved this capability over the last 15 years and now I am very proud to say that the Indian team has picked up the needed capabilities to serve the globe out of India. Currently we have over 100 people working in this environment.
