P. THARYAN he Ford Mustang, America’s pony car and also an iconic muscle car has finally arrived in India. At Rs 65 lakh price tag, it’s a tad expensive. It should have come for around Rs 45 lakh. But then this two-door coupe has been brought into India through the CBU route, attracting more
than 100pc import duty. We got our hands on this 5 litre V8 model and drove it for several laps around the Buddh International Circuit. After the drive the public relations manager came up to me and presented me a certificate saying, “You have driven the fastest today among all the drivers and your heart beat is the best too”. I felt good, not for being the fastest driver, but knowing that at my age past the 50 years mark, my heart continues to respond normally. As for the drive experience, we have a detailed track report in this issue. We also got to ride two motorcycles from the UM Motorcycles stable. These are basically American bikes, doing reasonably well for themselves in the world. UM has tied up with Lohia Auto for assembling these bikes in India. The UM Renegade Commando and the UM Renegade Sport S are good looking bikes. They ride well also. But it seems that a lot of issues on the quality front need to be addressed. Though I personally found the ride and handling good, areas like braking, build quality, NVH levels etc need to be fine tuned. Our reports give an honest feedback of our ride experience. In the B2B section we have a special report on South India. Despite the growing competition from other regions when it comes to attracting investment from automotive companies, south India remains a favoured destination for fresh investments. Among the south Indian states, Tamil Nadu takes a lead. This issue also contains all the other regular features. www.facebook.com/MotownIndia @MotownIndia www.youtube.com/MotownIndia

CEO, Hero Electric & Director‐Corporate Affairs, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles Report : P. THARYAN
Do you think e-vehicles are the need of the hour? The answer may have different perspectives considering various factors such as societal conditions, consumer preferences, level of infrastructure etc. In terms of the Indian society, a push for the adoption of electronic vehicles is the need of the hour. Given the fact that crude oil accounts for about 34% of India’s total imports, and that almost all the major Indian cities feature on the world’s most polluted places lists, I would say that our country needs to adopt e-vehicles on an emergency basis. Are government policies encouraging the growth of e-vehicle industry? The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020, of which Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric vehicles (FAME) is a subset, was an excellent policy which was well-researched, drafted and documented. FAME, which is more of an implementation wing of the prescribed objectives in NEMMP, has, however, not been able to deliver what it promised and was expected.
The major fault has been in the implementation of the incentives promised to consumers such as subsidies, rebates and cashbacks. ‘Sticker shock’ is still a significant bottleneck for consumers as they realise the initial cost of acquisition of an EV, whether twowheeler or four-wheeler, is about 1.5 times more than that of petrol/diesel vehicles. Developing an understanding of the consequent benefits to follow, such as energy savings and reduced pollution, in the minds of the consumer was an essential function of FAME and it has failed to execute it in an optimum manner. What are the core areas that need to be addressed? The government needs to address the EV issue on war footing rather than put it on a backburner after some announcements of exuberance. The core areas that need to be addressed by the government are:
• Lack of infrastructural blueprint: Probably the most fundamental aspect which limits the scope for EVs is the
severe unavailability of allied infrastructural requirements for Electric vehicles such as charging points. It seems the government has simply jumped onto the bandwagon of EVs to be more ecologically responsive without having the proper infrastructure, money or vision in place. Even the period of subsidy provided was short lived, running for only two years between April 2012 and April 2014.
• Absence of financial support: Providing essential financial support to EV manufacturers is necessary to stop them from burning out. The support should not come in the form of emergency doles or debt write-offs, but as a sustained form of financial investment that will help in market creation. • Imbibing EVs in government usage: The government can set a precedent by using EVs in different governmental operations. This would provide an initial market of considerable size, set an example for citizens and provide a safe ground for
experimentation and practical implementation of EVs. Such stable client base will also motivate manufacturers to undertake more Research and Development efforts to further reduce per unit cost of EVs.
• Non-existent marketing: The government has failed to create an awareness or interest in consumers regarding the use of EVs. The government needs to initiate policies and implement them with immediate effect. Pockets of small cities could be identified to initiate an experimentation project. . Is it possible for India to become a 100 percent electric vehicle nation by 2030, as a Minister claimed recently?? The intention of the government deserves accolades, but the ground reality is in stark contrast with these projections. To imagine a country as big as ours becoming 100% EV-driven nation, that too within the next 15 years, is an improbability, especially when considering the present scenario where only 4000 units have been sold this year.

T
here can be no better deal than driving a fast car on a race track, not bothering to look out for stray animals or reckless jaywalkers. The fast car I got to drive was the American iconic muscle car -- the Ford Mustang GT. It took Ford Motor Company almost five decades to build a right hand drive version of this pony car, as it is called in the US of A. Though Left Hand Drive Mustangs are available in various engine options including a race track version (Shelby GT 350), India will have to just do with a single variant with a 5.0L V8 petrol engine, churning out a 395.5 hp of peak power and a peak torque of 515 Nm. The peak engine power and torque are a wee bit lower than in the Mustang available in a country like Britain. This is primarily because of the slightly inferior quality of fuel that we have here in India. The modern Mustang has retained the essential characteristics of the iconic Mustang of yesteryears, but when the engine starts, you feel the growl is in place and the machine is rearing to go. The long sculpted bonnet and short rear deck still evoke nostalgic memories of the Mustang’s glorious past. The emblem of the Mustang wild horse running from left to right of the vehicle defines the born free character of this vehicle. Unfortunately, driving a fast paced vehicle for the first time on a race track for just about five rounds at menacing speeds with a class teacher like instructor by
your side is no real fun. I mean you like the car, but you wish you could push the instructor out of the window and make him disappear. So the impressions I gathered about the car was limited to those five rounds around the Buddh International Circuit, India’s only F1 race track. The two-door coupe looks stunning from all sides. It’s not like an overdressed woman going for a party looking garish after the make-up. Rather, the Mustang is more on the elegant side. The front has the signature sharkbite front fascia and trapezoidal grille with the emblem of the Mustang horse in silver adding character to the car on the whole. The rear is of course very aggressive three-dimensional, tri-bar tail lamps giving shark teeth like look. Though the car comes with seating for four adults, the truth is that this car is shaped more in favour of the front two seats. The longish bonnet, the short rear, and a tight passenger compartment, makes the Mustang look aggressive and bold. The new Mustang GT has had some design changes as compared to its predecessor. It’s got a lower and wider stance for which the roof height has gone down. The car is now much more planted to the road, even at higher speeds. The windshield and the rear glass are a bit more steeply sloped The interiors of the Ford Mustang GT are designed in favour of the driver. More leg room, more comfort and a lot of controls to change your driving experience. It’s almost like sitting inside a cockpit. A large, high-

The six-way power-adjustable leather-trimmed driver and front passenger seats in Ford Mustang are heated and cooled. the key fob with you and press on the start/Stop button on the dash. The throaty noise from the V8 machine let’s you know that the car is ready to eat up the road in front of you. Technically, this engine features an upgraded valve train and cylinder heads. But you will not let any of that mundane information bother you. It’s the speed which you are waiting for and the moment you get the signal, the car leaves the pit lane to begin its sprint in the open. By simply tapping the toggle switches on the console, one can adjust the steering effort, engine response, and transmission and electronic stability control settings. There are different Drive Modes to select. These include Normal, Sport+, Track Mode and Snow/ Wet. It’s obvious that I selected the Track Mode to start my five lap drive around the BIC. On normal roads it is best to choose the Normal Mode because it delivers a balance of comfort and responsive handling. Sport+ mode provides a more responsive steering and throttle response, plus different shift points. It is in the Track mode that an enthusiast discovers his slice of heaven. The engine sound gets more powerful and loud and the engine responds so quickly to the tap of the accelerator pedal. The Snow/Wet mode is ideal when inclement weather forces
you to be careful on the roads. Paddle shifters should best be used in the Sport+ mode and the track mode if you want to get a bit more oomph out of the car. On the track with a track mode on, driving the Mustang was a breeze. With right kind of braking and acceleration, I realised the car showed its predictable wheel control. With new fully independent front and rear suspension systems, one can have loads of fun with this rear wheel drive car. I managed my share of drifting as I cut into a corner and braked hard without accelerating. As the large disc brakes froze my tyres, I noticed that the car remained stable trying its best to pull me out of the corner. It’s only when I accelerated hard that it stopped its slide and promptly put me back on the track with absolute confidence. The new Ford Mustang also comes with an electronic linelock - which automatically locks the front brakes and releases the rears so you can spin and heat up the rear tyres, raising smoke like nobody’s business. But then the instructor did not allow me to do that. Like I said earlier, if only I could have thrown him out of the car, me and my Mustang would have crafted an entirely different and exhilarating driving experience on the race track. Screaming Horses are fun! MI

ome to think of it, every person who feels he or she has arrived in life wants to own at least a few up market products, be it Gucci shoes, Rolex watches, Montblanc pens, Roberto Cavalli clothes or Moschino luggage. Besides owning these, one would also love to drive a car from a royal lineage that offers a heavenly experience. Now there’s a catch here. Cars of royal lineage like the Rolls Royce, Bentley and others cost a bomb. But what about decent upmarket brands like Jaguars and Land Rovers? Surprisingly these are getting more and more affordable. What is Rs 40 lakh or Rs 50 lakh in today’s world? With money to be made in start ups, stock markets and well paid jobs, decent up market cars are up for grabs. So when I got to test drive a Jaguar XE, the first thing I told myself was, “Wow, good cars are getting affordable by the day”. The new jaguar XE sports saloon was launched at the Auto Expo early this year. It came in two variants, the Pure and Portfolio. Recently the company added a Prestige variant. All these are powered by a 1999cc 4 cylinder turbo charged petrol engine but the Portfolio model I drove is the most powerful of the lot, producing 237 horse power @ 5500 rpm and a peak torque of 340Nm at around 2000 to 4500rpm. When test cars are given to some of us journalists, they are given for very limited time and we have to review them come what may-- hail, rain or storm. It was pouring in Delhi when we got the car and it continued pouring even when we were driving it around. Slush, pot holes, water logged roads, traffic jams, all of these greeted us as we drove this car. In Delhi’s
monsoon weather, the car moved without complaining. Test passed with flying colours. The Jaguar XE is a very practical car to drive even in India’s tough road conditions. The all-new Jaguar XE prices start at Rs 39.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) but the Portfolio one costs Rs 46.50 lakh (ex showroom). One look at the car and you conclude that it’s a sports saloon with its short overhang at the rear with the high intensity LED tail lamps, obviously inspired by the sporty Jaguar F-Type. Twin exhausts enhance the rear looks, though I wished the tail pipes had come with smart tips. Rather it’s a bit plain Jane look out there. Not to miss is the Jaguar emblem on the boot. It simply adds magic to the car’s good looks. Coming to the front of the car, the radiator grille with gloss black insert and chrome surround gives a neat appeal to the car. The round emblem on the grille depicting the jaguar face, brings out the usual Jaguar signature styling. The chrome side window surround gives the side profile of the car a good look. Not to miss are the chrome side power vents. Convenience features like power folding exterior mirrors in body colour, side turn indicators, puddle lamps simply add value to the car. Rain sensing wipers are convenient to some extent but sometimes it gets a bit irritating as the wipers seem to scrape on the windscreen as a few rain drops land on them. The heated rear screen is a must have feature, especially when the weather turns humid or in extreme winter conditions. The car sits on 17 inches Goodyear tyres (225/55 R17) made in Slovenia! The car has a ground clearance of 110mm which is expected of a sports saloon of this kind. Step into the Jaguar XE, it’s truly heavenly. The seats are softgrain Windsor leather ones with perforation that provide comfort of the occupant. You can adjust the front seats electrically (10 way). Four memory settings for the driver seats enable you to store your favourite seat position. The leatherette wrapped instrument panel and a bit of piano finish on the console exudes elegance. The multi function steering wheel wrapped in grained leather is power adjustable for reach and rake. There are metal sill finishers with Jaguar lettering. Seating is comfortable in front, with dual zone

climate control. For the rear, there is space for three adults with three separate seatbelts for safety. The AC vents at the rear are located between the two front seats towards the back. There is enough leg room and knee room for the rear passengers. However, for someone above the six feet height, head room may be bit of a problem. Boot space is ample at 455 litres. Storage spaces are just about okay—twin front cup holders, sunglass holder in overhead console, front armrest with storage compartment, lockable glove compartment and carved out space in the car door panels. The InControl Touch feature allows you control over the car’s major functions through an 8 inch touch screen. These functions include audio, climate control and navigation system. Also, the 380 W Meridian sound system gives you a great acoustic experience. From the word ‘Go’, the Jaguar XE offers a great driving experience. The moment you strap yourself in the driver’s seat, you are in a wired world. Put your foot on the brake pedal and press the start/stop button once. The engine roars to life and you will notice that a large knob on the console gently surfaces to enable you to rotate it and select the drive mode. You can only rotate the knob if your foot is pressed on the brake. This is obviously for safety reasons. It’s a simple setting—P (Parking), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Drive) and S (Sport). Moving from Drive
mode to Sport mode will require you to gently press the knob and turn. The Jaguar XE is first of a new generation of cars to be launched on Jaguar’s all new Aluminum Intensive Architecture. It is exceptionally strong and light. The all-new Jaguar XE comes with Advanced Driving technologies like Electric Powered Assisted Steering (EPAS). It does give adequate feedback and control on the different surfaces. The car also has an All Surface Progress Control (ASPC) which is a low speed cruise control that helps cope with low traction situations. The car also has Torque Vectoring by Braking. Torque vectoring in essence means that in an all wheel drive vehicle like this, it can get power to any wheel nearly instantly without having to use the brakes
22 | MOTOWN INDIA | AUGUST 2016
or cut power. It controls wheel spin by braking a spinning wheel or cutting the power from the engine. This is best tested on a track while cornering or on bad surfaces. The engine is mated to an 8 speed electronic automatic transmission with Jaguar sequential shift. In the D mode, the moment you floor the accelerator, the car gains speed almost instantly, kicking in the turbo at rpms above 2000. On the slushy rain hit roads of Delhi, the car performed well, making us experience its traction control features. When the weather cleared later and the roads had dried, we belted the cars on lonely stretches and came back impressed with its seamless acceleration and ability to handle well during high speed cornering. To get more zing out of the car, the Sport mode is awesome and if
you combine paddle shifters with it, the car speeds faster. So now what? Well, I assume you may have bought your Roberto Cavalli attire, so go out and buy the Jaguar XE! MI

FIRST RIDE UM RENEGADE COMMANDO

he word “Commando” brings to your mind images of tough and brawny soldiers with black grease paint smeared across their face and wearing fatigues with all kinds of weapons strapped around them, looking menacing and purposeful as they walk around. But did you know there is a motorcycle from UM Motorcycles, a company based in the US that goes by the name “Commando”? Does this UM
Renegade Commando motorcycle live up to its name? We find out. This Renegade Commando comes with a 280cc engine that produces a peak power of 24bhp and 21Nm of torque. These are

really good numbers but you get to enjoy the maximum amount of power and torque only close to the top end of the rpm band which means that you really have to rev the engine in order to get it to its best. The engine comes mated to a 6 speed transmission. The bike has overdrive gear so while you are cruising in the 6th gear you can actually ride at slower speeds as well. The only hindrance in the experience is caused by the somewhat clunky nature of the gear shifts. While the exhaust note on the Renegade Commando is sweet to listen to, it is not as good as its sibling - the Renegade Sport S.
I personally found this a bit odd since the Commando is supposed to be a proper cruiser so it should have had that deep rumble like sound and not the Sport S which is aimed to be sportier. Talking about the overall ride, it is enjoyable and feels how a solid cruiser should feel like. Once you are on a highway, this bike has long legs and the presence of a 6th gear really makes a big impact. The bike is heavy and thus even after crossing speeds of 100kmph (which you can do easily) it felt rock steady. This cruiser comes with broad 110/90-16 tyres in the front and 140/90-15 tyres in the rear and these provide a good grip on the road and surprisingly allow for some great cornering capabilities. Now since we live in India, we are bound to come across bumps and pot holes more often than not. The Renegade Commando is equipped with hydraulic telescopic suspension in the front and twin hydraulic shocks with springs in the rear. The suspension gobbles up the

smaller bumps with ease and you almost don’t feel them. It even handles bigger bumps nicely and you won’t find yourself hopping on the seat every now and them. The Renegade Commando comes with a large 280mm disc brake in the front which really lends some great stopping power to this vehicle. Although the drum brake in the rear was not at the same level as the front disc, it still did a decent job. The switch gear has been placed ergonomically and everything is within reach. We also liked the tank mounted speedometer. It has an analogue speedometer and a decently sized digital display underneath that. The blue color illumination really looks good, especially in dark conditions and is not too hard to read. This digital meter shows things like fuel level, current gear and trip meter. Another neat feature added by UM is a USB port tucked on the left side of the speedometer mounting. The overall aesthetics of the bike are good but we felt that since it is competing with big and established names like the Royal Enfield and Bajaj, it could have been improved even more. Although we feel that with time UM will improve on this aspect of the vehicle. There are hooks on both sides of the bike for hanging your gear or groceries. This can be very handy considering that this is a cruiser and you will most likely

be taking it on long journeys and will need to carry stuff along with you. The rider seat height is set at 750mm which is good enough for any average Indian. The long seat is comfortable and combined with the T-shaped handlebar, it provides for a hassle free long journey. You can easily ride for long distances without feeling any kind of fatigue or stiffness. There is also a backrest at the very end of the seat that can provide good support for the pillion. Renegade Commando casts a decent beam and is sufficient for when you ride at night. The turn indicators also do their job well. Although the UM Renegade Commando competes with cruisers like the Royal Enfield Thunderbird (350cc) and the Bajaj Avenger(220cc). I personally feel that since the Renegade Commando has a 280 cc engine, it actually

carves out a separate space of its own in the market. It sure might have a few shortcoming here and there but success and finesse comes to those that ‘soldier on’ and continuously strive for something better and we feel UM’s Renegade Commando has a lot of potential. So if you have ever fancied yourself an American cruiser but are on a tight budget then the UM Renegade Commando is the way to go. MI

hen someone says cruiser, the first thought which comes to mind is a big black Harley. But Harleys are hardly affordable, moreover they were never meant to be affordable in my opinion. Should that really stop the vast market of Indian consumers from owning a cruiser with American heritage? Well honestly it should not but up until now there were no options available. All of this changed when United Motors decided to bring their range of Renegade
motorcycles to India. Soon I found myself cruising behind the broad T shaped bars of a UM Renegade Sport S. The Sport S has a very urban look with crisp and clean lines running seamlessly along the edges of the bike. The Renegade Sport S definitely has a commanding road presence and turns heads quite often. It also comes with a 360 degree LED system and blindspot mirrors as well. At the heart of the Sport S is a 279.5cc, single cylinder, liquid cooled engine. The petrol motor

puts out 24.8bhp at 8500rpm and 21.8Nm of torque at 7000rpm. To be absolutely honest, I was completely taken aback with the response and handling of the Renegade Sport S. I had expected a very lukewarm performance from the single cylinder engine, but instead what I got was a very thrilling ride unlike a typical cruiser, it was more like riding a fire cracker. The throttle response is very accurate and almost instantly you can feel a surge of power from the rear wheel pushing you forward. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed, manual transmission with overdrive gears. The shifts are smooth and the Sport S has
long legs be it on highways or city roads one does not need to shift that often. The bike climbs up to 100kmph in a few seconds and has the capability of going upto 125kmph. The bike sits on a 110/ 70 R17 tyre in front and a 140/ 90 R15 tyre in the rear. The fat profile of the rear tyre gives the bike a very beefy look and also provides immense grip on tarmac. The bike has a softly sprung suspension which is facilitated by 41mm hydraulic telescopic forks in the front and spring loaded twin hydraulic shocks in the rear. The bike rides over bumps and potholes with ease and the

suspension soaks in most of the jerks. The Sport S has a low centre of gravity and that caters to a well balanced and stable ride. Even while cornering at high speeds the ride feels quite solid and planted. Braking on the bike is facilitated by a 280mm disc up front and a drum in the rear. The front disc comes with a 2 pot caliper and provides a more than adequate bite but then we felt the rear brakes could have been a bit sharper. The build quality of the Renegade Sport S is also quite good, the ride feels solid and the

overall quality of materials used is more than satisfactory. The rider seat height has been set at a comfortable 750mm and the seat cushion is quite soft, thus cruising along highways even for long hours feels like a breeze. The bike has a decent ground clearance of 150mm and a 1545mm wheelbase. The seating position, handle bars and foot pegs all have been laid out in a manner to make it more comfortable for the rider. The switch gear has been ergonomically placed on the handlebars making them easy to

access and operate. The Sport S comes with an Analogue Speedo and a Digital Tachometer with a fuel indicator. The Instrument cluster is simple and easy to read. The UM Renegade Sport S comes with an 18 litre fuel tank and returns approximately 30kms to the litre giving it quite a decent range on a single tank of fuel. This bike goes up against the Bajaj Avenger and Royal Enfield’s cruiser bike line up. The Sport S does have that characteristic American cruiser appeal and a very peppy performance. What

is most appealing however is the price tag of just Rs. 1,49,000 (exshowroom Delhi). This fire cracker of a motorcycle is definitely a not to miss if you are in the market for an affordable cruiser. MI

Marc Marquez wins rain soaked MotoGP in Germany Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda RC213V) who at one point in the race thought that his “run at this circuit was going to come to an end” achieved a historic result in MotoGP race in Germany. At the rain soaked German Grand Prix he scored a unique seventh consecutive victory at the Sachsenring across three categories: 125cc, Moto2 and MotoGP. To complete Honda’s joy in this most enthralling of races, Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda RC213V) finished a superb second to make it a Honda one-two. Both Marquez and Crutchlow were delighted with their results. Marquez’s third win of the year doubled his championship lead at the halfway stage to 48 points over reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) who could only manage a 15-place finish this afternoon. Meanwhile Crutchlow was ecstatic with his first podium since last year’s Argentine GP, just a few weeks before he and his wife Lucy are expecting their first child, said a Honda press release. Marquez, who suffered a high-speed spill in morning warm-up, could hardly have achieved his 53rd career victory in more treacherous and challenging conditions. The race started on a soaking track but by half-distance a dry line appeared at certain parts of the circuit. Marquez was the first rider to enter the pits and change to a bike fitted with full slicks. This was a brave and risky decision because the track was still damp in many places, which made it very difficult to work enough heat into his slick tyres. But the 23-year-old’s spectacularly aggressive riding style soon had his slicks up to temperature and he became the fastest rider on track, catching the leading group, who were still using rain tires, at the rate of six seconds a lap! So his decision to change bikes turned out to be inspired, but it was anything but an easy decision when he took it. Most of the leading group did finally enter the pits to change bikes and tires – some to intermediates, some to slicks (including Crutchlow) – which left Marquez with only one rider ahead of him: last month’s Dutch TT winner Jack Miller (EG 0,0 Marc VDS Honda RC213V). Marquez quickly swept past the Australian and was soon well ahead, while the battle for the runner-up finish waged between Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati), who had led much of the earlier stages. The Briton pounced on the Italian at the final corner with two laps remaining and then established himself in second place. Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC213V) had high hopes of a great race after topping this morning’s rain-affected morning warm-up session. However, a challenging qualifying session had put the 30-year-old Spaniard tenth on the grid, so it wasn’t easy for him to fight his way through the pack. At one stage it seemed like he might have a shot at the podium but it didn’t quite work out like that and he ended the race in sixth place, a fraction ahead of Miller and Valentino Rossi (Yamaha). Andreas Mikkelsen snatches dramatic last-gasp victory at WRC Poland Andreas Mikkelsen snatched a dramatic last-gasp victory at the PZM 73rd Rally Poland on the afternoon of July 3, 2016 when long-time leader Ott Tanak was cruelly deprived of a maiden FIA World Rally Championship win. Tänak’s Ford Fiesta RS suffered a puncture in the penultimate rain-soaked speed test, wiping out his near-20sec lead and allowing Mikkelsen to claim a second career success. He became the sixth different winner in the last six rounds of a hugely unpredictable season. “We pushed so hard all weekend and with the weather as it was today we knew it was going to be difficult and we gave it everything. It was like a war in the penultimate stage and it was all about luck, who got out without problems, and we were the lucky ones,” said Mikkelsen on Sunday July 3. Mikkelsen, showing great sportsman spirit went and empathised with Tanak. The former too was on the receiving end of a similar situation when he spun out of the lead in Sweden in 2015 in the final test. “I told Ott before the final stage that I felt so sorry for him. It would have been an adventure story but that’s the way rallying is. It’s very unpredictable,” said Mikkelsen, who climbed to second in the points. Tänak had excelled on the sandy but lightning fast roads since Friday afternoon and was inconsolable at the finish. “There’s nothing I can say. All this and then you get nothing, it’s too hard,” he said. Hayden Paddon completed the podium in a Hyundai i20, 2.3sec behind Tänak, to end a run of accidents in the previous two rounds. However, the New Zealander almost relaxed too much in the final stage, allowing team-mate Thierry Neuville to close to within 0.8sec. Jari-Matti Latvala finished fifth, a further 4.5sec back in a Volkswagen Polo R. Team-mate Sébastien Ogier was sixth, the championship leader admitting conditions were so bad that simply surviving the final day was his sole aim. Craig Breen was seventh in a DS 3, moving up after team-mate Stéphane Lefebvre smashed his car’s rear left suspension after spinning into a tree. The Frenchman eventually finished ninth. Mads Østberg overhauled both Lefebvre and teammate Eric Camilli, who limped through the final stage with damaged suspension on his Fiesta RS after going off the road in the previous test. Camilli took 10th. Dani Sordo retired after firstly slamming his i20 in chicane bales and then damaging his rear suspension against a tree. Poland marked the midpoint of the 14-round campaign and the second half begins with Neste Rally Finland which is based in Jyväskylä on July 28 - 31. (Source: WRC / Red Bull Content Pool)

Hungary F1 win pushes Lewis to lead position in driver standing After a victory in Budapest in the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes now heads the driver standings for the first time this year, getting ahead of his team mate Nico Rosberg who was leading all this while. Hamilton has a six-point advantage over Rosberg who finished second at the Hungaroring. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo came in third. Nico Hulkenberg of Force India came in among the points with a tenth position while his teammate Sergio Perez could only manage an 11th. Winner Hamilton went into a lead position got into a lead position immediately as the race starter and got ahead of polesitter Rosberg. The Mercedes drivers were initially threatened by the Red Bull drivers but they could not get ahead. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel came in fourth followed by Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing managed a fifth. Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari could only manage a sixth while Fernando Alonso took a distant seventh for McLaren. His team mate Jenson Button was the only one who did not finish the race. Button was the only retirement. After complaining of a brake pedal which kept going to the floor he was told by his team not to change gear, and then received a drive-through penalty for unauthorised radio communication. Later his hopes ended when his car suffered an oil leak.Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz, Williams’ Valtteri Bottas and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg completed the top ten to take the remaining points. Both Red Bull and Ferrari showed moments of potential. Riccardo so nearly went round the outside of both Mercedes for the lead at the start but having got by Rosberg in Turn 1 he then lost out to him almost immediately in Turn 2. The result gives Hamilton 192 points to Rosberg’s 186, as Ricciardo moves to third on 115 just ahead of Raikkonen on 114. Vettel is fifth with 110, as Verstappen closes up with 100. In the constructors’ stakes, Mercedes have 378 points, Ferrari 224 and Red Bull are closing still with 223.

abali, the blockbuster Tamil movie starring south Indian superstar Rajnikanth got off to a roaring start in July 2016 across cinema halls in India. While Rajnikanth is, without doubt, a showstopper and a star to reckon with in the celluloid world, there’s lot more that south India offers in terms of investment and a healthy business environment for several industries. The automobile industry is one that has thrived here and continues to do so. Latest data on investments reveal that Southern states continue to attract major investments. By 2020 when Indian vehicle production will touch 46 million units and auto component revenues will increase several fold from its current annual turnover of US $ 39 billion, south India will contribute at least a third of this output with Tamil Nadu scoring over its immediate neighbours that include Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala. Several major car companies like Hyundai, Renault-Nissan, Ford India, Mitsubishi, BMW India, TVS Motor, India Yamaha, among others operate out of Tamil Nadu alone. Supporting the OEMs are several automotive component manufactures that form the formidable supply base for the vehicle manufacturers. The Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor is a major region for automotive players in the country. On the other hand, states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana too are wooing investment in the automotive space. “The Southern states of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have collectively emerged as hubs for IT, aerospace, automotive and defence manufacturing over a period of time. Clearly defined policies, in some cases special subsidies, supported by good roads and railway infrastructure and specifically ports in the case of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have played a role in this.

“Many of India’s top ranking engineering colleges are located in the Southern states. These institutions are a source of high quality talent for the automotive industry. Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai are India’s IT / software hubs. With the highly skilled engineering talent available in these cities, they are emerging as important centers for automotive R&D,” says Claude d’Gama Rose, Managing Director, Continental Automotive Components India. While Continental has a well established presence across the automotive hubs of the country, it has an electronics plant as well as an R&D centre in Bangalore, Karnataka. Recently Continental opened an office in Chennai to support its customers better. Many automotive majors operate out of different locations in South India. These include both OEMs as well as automotive component manufacturers. Among them are India Yamaha, Allison Transmission,Turbo Energy, Titan Automation, Simpson, Roots, Hyundai Motor India, Ford India, TVS Group, Royal Enfield, Hero MotoCorp (Will be setting up plant in Andhra Pradesh), BMW India, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles

A note (updated July 2016) put together by the Investment and Technology Promotion Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, says “In order to keep up with the growing demand, several auto makers have started investing heavily in various segments of the industry during the last few months. The industry has attracted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) worth US$ 14.32 billion during the period April 2000 to December 2015, according to data released by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP)”. Of these investments, several were directed towards southern states. Isuzu Motors, the Japanbased utility vehicle manufacturer, inaugurated its greenfield manufacturing unit in SriCity, Andhra Pradesh, at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore (US$ 450.94 million)
a few months back. Global auto major Ford plans to manufacture in India two families of engines by 2017, a 2.2 litre diesel engine codenamed Panther, and a 1.2 litre petrol engine codenamed Dragon, which are expected to power 270,000 Ford vehicles globally. Ford has plants both in Chennai as well as in Gujarat. Germany-based luxury car maker BMW’s local unit based in Chennai has announced to procure components from seven India-based auto parts makers. MRF Ltd plans to invest Rs 4,500 crore (US$ 660.231 million) in its two factories in Tamil Nadu as part of its expansion plan. Hero MotoCorp is investing Rs 5,000 crore (US$ 733.59 million) in five manufacturing facilities across India, Colombia and Bangladesh, to increase its annual production capacity to 12 million units by 2020. Part of that investment will be in a new plant in Andhra Pradesh. In September 2015, India Yamaha Motor announced that it would invest Rs. 1,500 crore in phases till 2018 in its new plant at Vallam Vadagal in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. The plant has an initial production capacity of 450,000 units which will be increased to 1.8 million units by
2018 This was Yamaha’s third manufacturing facility in the country. The plant was inaugurated during the opening ceremony of the Global Investors Meet 2015 by Chief Minister Ms. J. Jayalalithaa. The new factory is the first in the Yamaha Motor group to have a vendor park in its vicinity. Spread across 177 acres, the new facility covers an area of 109 acres for IYM and 68 acres for vendor partners. The vendor park has 9 vendors who plan to invest Rs. 1,000 crore and will employ around 3,000 people by 2018. Mahindra has a state of the art R & D facility, Mahindra Research Valley at Chennai which regularly churns out a range of vehicles from utility vehicles to tractors. In April 2016, Mahindra & Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Sector (FES) raised the bar in farm technology with the launch of the Mahindra Yuvo, a new age, superior technology, range of tractors in the 30-45 HP category which added to the company’s existing range of highly successful 15 – 57 HP tractors. M&M invested over Rs 300 crore towards the development of this new platform of tractors. These

German auto components maker Bosch Ltd opened its new factory at Bidadi, near Bengaluru, which is its fifth manufacturing plant in Karnataka. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru with a view to

We should treat it like that because of the awareness level and the way the behaviour and preferences of customers are different. The South is four to five years ahead compared to the North. .....No manufacturer can think of moving
away from the South, whether it be Tamil Nadu, Karnataka or Andhra Pradesh, you have to be present there, because from OEM and logistics point of view, it makes more sense if you want to cater to those customers....Eventually everyone has to come to the South, the way the automobile industry is growing,” says Roy Kurian, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt Ltd. Giving his views on Tamil Nadu, Kurian noted, “Tamil Nadu is a
good place. Not only Yamaha, but the entire industry is growing there. The market is booming and it is at an all time best. Market share is increasing year by year, in fact, month by month. As a brand, we’re very happy with Tamil Nadu and would like to go more aggressive as far as Tamil Nadu is concerned”. “There are several factors that work together towards making South India an attractive destination for automobile players. Gadkari offered to promote joint ventures between Tesla and Indian automobile companies with a view to introducing pollution-free road transport in India, especially commercial and public motor vehicles. Tesla senior executive admitted that their manufacturing hub has to be outside the US for markets in rest of the world and appreciated the Indian offer of cooperation which they said will certainly be considered at the appropriate time in future. They evinced keen interest in knowing whether there was any subsidy on electric vehicles in India. Gadkari asked Tesla executives to outline their

of fierce competition. India still lacks in fundamental areas like infrastructure, business environment, operational ease, transparency and access to credit which are critical to driving the country’s attractiveness as a manufacturing hub. India needs to show dramatic improvement when it comes to policy implementation on ground. India’s position has improved slightly in the Ease of Doing Business Report by the World Bank, and currently stands at 130 (among 189 countries in 2016). The key to “Make in India” is productivity in manufacturing and one of the most important contributors to productivity is a stable, reliable and efficient infrastructure.
commit to better planning, policy implementation and technology adoption to bring down road fatalities. With much needed intervention from the Government and increasing demand from customers, there is a growth in the adoption of safety technologies such as ABS, ESC and airbags. The implementation of more stringent emission norms – the Government’s proposal to skip BS V and advance to BS VI by 2020 – will intensify the need for electronically controlled engine and emission management systems. As CO2 norms continue to get tighter, hybrid and electric vehicles will demonstrate significant environmental advantages over conventional gasoline or dieselpowered cars. Incentive schemes like FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles) will drive the uptake of 48 Volt mild hybrid systems, full and plug-in hybrids as well as full electric vehicles. Electronics penetration in vehicles is increasing significantly; however the demand for electronics and advanced functionalities often conflict with price sensitivity in India. Localisation is important in order to meet the specific technology and cost requirements of the Indian market but there should be no compromise to quality in the process.
With a “Make in India” initiative being encouraged by the Indian government, how do you see the various economic policies that are in place? What are the areas where the government needs to look into urgently so as to give the much needed fillip to the Indian automotive industry? Daimler Buses presents autonomously driving city bus of the future The world’s biggest bus manufacturer, Daimler Buses, continues to make rapid progress in modern day technology. The Mercedes-Benz Future Bus with CityPilot has driven autonomously for the first time on a route of approximately 20 kilometers in Amsterdam. On a section of the longest bus rapid transit (BRT) line in Europe, the bus drives at speeds up to 70 km/h, stops to the nearest centimeter at bus stops and traffic lights, drives off again automatically, passes through tunnels, brakes for obstacles or pedestrians and communicates with traffic signals. The driver is on board and monitors the system, but with a much easier task than before. Daimler Buses is the world’s first manufacturer to put a city bus into automated operation in a real-life traffic situation. Daimler Buses will invest approximately Euros 200 million in the further development of its citybus portfolio by 2020 CITYPILOT FOR AUTONOMOUS DRIVING: FASCINATING TECHNOLOGY ENHANCES SAFETY, EFFICIENCY AND COMFORT The first step towards fully automated driving with buses in urban traffic consists of BRT lines with separate lanes. The Future Bus recognizes whether the route is suitable for automated driving and informs the driver accordingly. The bus driver then presses a button and CityPilot is activated. One condition is that the driver does not press the accelerator or brake pedal and does not steer, because any driver activity overrules CityPilot – the driver is always in charge of driving and can take over at any time. CityPilot comprises current assistance systems, those used in Mercedes-Benz coaches for example, as well as additional systems, some of which have
been taken over from Daimler Trucks and further developed for urban traffic. The equipment includes long- and short-range radar, a large number of cameras and the satellite-controlled GPS navigation system. The intelligent connectivity of the cameras and sensors is pioneering, and allows a precise picture of the surroundings and the exact position of the bus. ON THE ROAD IN THE MERCEDES-BENZ FUTURE BUS WITH CITYPILOT Take Amsterdam as an example: signals from special traffic lights ahead of the bus. Two red lights next to each other mean stop, two white lights one above the other mean go ahead. The white lights come on and the bus starts gently and follows its lane. CityPilot recognizes the traffic lights with its sophisticated camera system. In addition, the vehicle communicates via Wi-Fi with the route infrastructure, receiving information on traffic-light status. This means that the bus can take advantage of a “green wave” of traffic lights. Two bridges, a tunnel. The bus safely stays in its lane. After leaving the built-up area, it accelerates to the allowed 70 km/h. The maximum speed is programmed; even at this speed the driver does not steer. The bus arrives at the bus stop in automated mode. It stops, opens and closes the doors, and drives away again. Red lights ahead; the bus independently brakes gently and comes to a standstill safely. While the lights are changing, pedestrians are still crossing the road. The bus waits, lets them cross, and does not drive away until the road is clear. In order to
64 | MOTOWN INDIA | AUGUST 2016
avoid a collision, CityPilot has an automatic braking system that decelerates the vehicles as required. The Mercedes-Benz Future Bus with CityPilot therefore significantly enhances road safety. Thanks to its anticipatory driving style, it improves efficiency, puts less stress on the engine and reduces fuel consumption and emissions. And with its smooth, fluent progress, it also enhances passenger comfort. With this technology, Daimler Buses is following the development path of Daimler Trucks, which will bring Highway Pilot to series maturity by the end of the decade. Daimler Buses will develop bus-specific aspects of the CityPilot system towards series application independently – like driving to and away from bus stops. A MORE ATTRACTIVE CITY BUS WITH A REVOLUTIONARY DESIGN The Mercedes-Benz Future Bus is much more than just a technology carrier for autonomous driving: For this city bus, the Daimler Buses team has developed a
specific, attractive vision for public transport that breaks with many conventions. The roughly twelve meter long solo bus on the basis of the global bestseller Citaro goes completely new ways in terms of design. For example, it appeals with an asymmetrical and thus more modern and attractive exterior design. The interior is open and light. The completely low-floor bus is divided into three areas: The “service” area is at the front near the driver; the “express” area for short journeys with a focus on standing room and quick passenger flow is in the middle. Behind that is a “lounge” area where passengers spend more time. Their smartphones can be charged wirelessly, inductively that is. The completely redesigned cockpit is an integrated part of the whole space. The driver receives the required information on a large display in an innovative presentation style, and can concentrate fully on his or her core tasks. An electronic ticket system dispenses with the conventional selling and checking of tickets by the driver. The ticket system is an important element of the bus’s connectivity.

CV TECHNOLOGY
Getting from Toronto to Texas in a truck, using Bosch technology In the dark skies over Texas, the turban’s orange glow stands out. Normally people around here wear a cowboy hat, but Jaspreet Bola knows more about horsepower than he does about horse riding – and anyway, he prefers to stick to his own traditions. It’s eight in the morning as this young Sikh climbs out of the cab of his semi tractor-trailer. In this grey, wet weather at a truck stop outside Dallas, it’s time for a quick coffee, a soda, and a burger. He’ll be choosing the chicken and avoiding the beef – and the same goes for his copilot, Manjinder Sidhu, who has no cowboy hat either, but instead a blue and white knit cap. The Texas Longhorn cattle quietly grazing on the horizon have nothing to fear from this pair. Jaspreet and Manjinder come from Punjab, a region in northern India, but have both lived in Canada for many years. Every week, their job as truckers sees them driving thousands of miles through North America’s varied landscapes. Day and night. One drives while the other sleeps. They almost always take the same route: from Toronto, Canada’s biggest city, to Laredo, in the far south of the United States. BOSCH WAREHOUSE IN LAREDO HANDLES AROUND 100 TRUCKS DAILY There they head for the Bosch warehouse, which stretches over more than 11,000 square meters and is just a stone’s throw from the Mexican border. The pale yellow building is one of the Bosch logistics hubs for North America. Some 750,000 pallets pass through here every year, and the site handles around 100 trucks daily. “It takes no time at all,” says Jaspreet, “you just reverse up to the ramp, unload the raw materials, fill up with finished components, and an hour later
www.motownindia.com
Pictures Courtesy: Bosch you’re back on the road.” This time, too, Jaspreet and Manjinder are transporting nuts and bolts, plastic parts, and seals made in the United States and Canada to Laredo. There, together with similar components, they are readied for onward transportation to Bosch’s Mexican plants, and generally spend no more than 24 hours in the warehouse. Heading back north, Jaspreet and Manjinder’s truck is loaded with finished products from Toluca, San Luis Potosí, and Aguascalientes: ignition coils, wiper systems, brake components, sensors, and much more – most of them destined for the big automakers in and around Detroit. UP TO 1,200 BAR INJECTION
PRESSURE FOR EFFICIENT COMBUSTION But these two truckers don’t just have Bosch technology in their cargo hold. It’s also under the hood of their Freightliner Cascadia Evolution. The truck is powered by a Detroit DD15 engine with six cylinders, around 500 HP, almost 15 litres displacement – and the highly efficient Bosch CRSN4 common-rail injection system. The high-pressure pump and rail come from the Jihlava plant in the Czech Republic, while the extremely precise injector is manufactured in Homburg, Germany. “The Freightliner has plenty of power, uses less fuel than other trucks, and is nice and quiet,” Manjinder says. The pump provides system pressure of up to 1,200 bar, while
the injector features an integrated hydraulic pressure amplifier that can more than double the maximum injection pressure. As a result, the engine is economical, and efficient – and provides power whenever it is needed. And this not only in the Cascadia, but also in millions of commercial vehicles in North America and the rest of the world. But back on the soaking wet parking lot in Texas, thoughts such as this are not the issue. Jaspreet and Manjinder prefer to spend their time working out how long it will take them to reach Laredo – and above all whether they will manage to get back to Toronto in time for Diwali, the Indian festival of light. They’ve already put around two-thirds of
AUGUST 2016 | MOTOWN INDIA | 65
CV TECHNOLOGY the journey behind them. “We reckon on roughly 34 hours each way,” Manjinder says. There are rarely any traffic jams, they fill up just once, and the mandatory rest periods aren’t too long when there are two drivers. They know the route like the back of their hands: 2,948 kilometres through the southern tip of Canada, crossing into the U.S. near Detroit, then across the industrial heartlands of Michigan and Ohio, straight through the fields and forests of Indiana and Illinois, and over the Mississippi to Missouri. And when the sky gets bigger and the light changes, and when it’s banjos and not guitars on the radio, that’s when they’ve arrived in the South: welcome to Texas. Now Canada is a long way away. Doesn’t it get boring? Always taking the same highways and stopping at the same gas stations? Jaspreet laughs. “It depends on whether there’s something to look forward to,” he says. For him there is: he dreams of having a small house in the suburbs of Toronto and of marrying his girlfriend. That’s what he’s saving up for, regularly putting a little money aside. He and Manjinder are two of a great many truckers with Indian roots who drive for Canadian logistics companies. “People consider us Sikhs honest and reliable,” says Kashmir Singh, one of Jaspreet and Manjinder’s fellow truckers. Kashmir has been driving all over North America for many years and has already been to all 48 contiguous U.S. states. Like the other two, he now works for himself, driving his own truck, despite the Giggs Express logo on its side. Giggs Express is the company that sent the three drivers on their current journeys. Independent drivers are paid by the mile, which means they are directly affected by the price of diesel. Each time the price goes up, Jaspreet’s house in the suburbs recedes another few months into the future. BOSCH ECO.LOGIC. MOTION CAN REDUCE FUEL
CONSUMPTION BY 5 PERCENT What the drivers need, therefore, is more economical engines. That’s why Jaspreet’s brother – who owns the truck – opted for the Freightliner. Not only does it feature state-of-the-art Bosch diesel technology, it also has Eco. Logic motion, the smart assistance system provided by Bosch’s Car Multimedia division. This system makes use of a digital map and knows long before the driver does whether the road is going uphill or downhill, and whether to expect a bend or a long stretch of straight road. Because the system also detects the current speed and the selected gear, it can work with the automatic transmission to accelerate in advance or avoid unnecessary gearshifts – without the driver having to do anything. Eco.Logic motion can potentially reduce fuel consumption by 5 percent. “Every litre less helps,” Jaspreet says, filling up for a few hundred dollars somewhere in deepest Missouri. All the drivers agree that diesel will remain the most important powertrain in the logistics business for the foreseeable future. That makes it all the more important to further improve internal-combustion engines and make them more efficient, and more cost-effective. Bosch is working hard on this – so

Kashmir, Manjinder, and millions of other truckers don’t have to fill up so often. To reduce environmental impact. And to help Jaspreet’s dream of a wedding and a house come true that little bit sooner... BOSCH CONCEPTS AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR TODAY’S AND TOMORROW’S TRUCKS American powertrain: The Freightliner’s diesel engine features Bosch injection technology. The CRSN4 common-rail system ensures optimum performance, low fuel consumption, and reduced emissions. At some point, heavyduty trucks will also be largely automated and connected. The steering system will play a major part in achieving this. Robert Bosch Automotive Steering GmbH, the world’s biggest manufacturer of power steering systems, already offers Servotwin®, the first integrated electro-hydraulic steering system for heavy-duty trucks (not installed in the truck presented in this article). This steering system allows precise steering actions at high speeds as well as comfortable truck maneuvering at low speeds. As Servotwin® is developed further, it will bring to trucks many of the assistance systems that have already proved
so valuable in cars. These include corrective steering interventions should the vehicle unintentionally leave its lane and a traffic jam assistant that relieves drivers of a lot of stress. It can also support an assistance function that determines how much steering has to be corrected to counter a sudden gust of wind, and actuates an electric motor to help with the maneuver. Digital exterior mirror: Lower fuel consumption – the large-surface exterior mirror that increases drag is a thing of the past. On top of that, drivers have a much better view of what’s happening to the rear, even at night. Freely programmable instrument cluster: The days of fixed mechanical instrument clusters are over. Today’s displays can be adapted to the traffic situation and to the requirements of drivers and automakers. The extremely high-resolution display allows information to be presented more accurately. Display unit: The display unit is the central user interface for navigation and entertainment. Drivers can connect it directly with their smartphones, and in this way safely operate many apps on their truck’s touchscreen. The display’s design and interface dynamically adapt to the driving situation.

Lanxess polyamide 6 for the engine oil pan of a six-cylinder boxer engine The trend of manufacturing engine oil pans from plastic instead of metals such as aluminum is continuing to gain ground. For historical reasons, the plastic of choice to date has almost always been polyamide 6.6. However, newer designs are favoring polyamide 6, an alternative that offers a similarly high-quality property profile, but is much more economical. The latest design of this type is the oil pan module for the new six-cylinder boxer engines of the Porsche 911 Carrera, which is being manufactured using Durethan from Lanxess. “The component fully satisfies the specific requirements for functional integration, lightweight construction and cost-effective production that the new generation of engines has to meet,” explains Jorge Soares, project manager for the highly complex component at Polytec Plastics Germany GmbH & Co KG, which is based in Lohne. The oil pan module has been developed in close collaboration between Polytec and Porsche. MATERIAL DATA FOR DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS In a study carried out for Porsche, Lanxess proved the feasibility of manufacturing motor oil pans from polyamide 6. For example, aging tests were carried out to determine the durability of the thermoplastic under exposure to elements such as new and used engine oil. Specimen storage tests spanning a total of 3,000 hours at 150 °C were performed on highly reinforced, hydrolysisstabilised, easy-flowing and high-temperature-stabilised Durethan grades, among others. “The test results show that the aging behaviour of heat-stabilised polyamide 6 is only marginally different to that of heat-stabilised polyamide 6.6 in terms of tensile

strength, Young’s modulus, elongation at break and impact strength. Appropriately optimised polyamide 6 compounds are therefore ideally suited for use in components that convey engine oil,” says Christof Boden, expert for engine compartment
applications from Lanxess. The specialty chemicals company is making the test results – and other material data – available to development partners as part of joint projects. Furthermore, customers are supported through every stage in the development
of an oil pan as part of the HiAnt customer services package. This brand incorporates HPM’s extensive material, simulation and processing competence, which it offers to customers through all stages of component development. Services include, for example, simulating mold filling including warpage calculation, simulation of stone impact and sealing forces, or testing of components with regard to sealing gap expansion and stone impact. GREATLY SIMPLIFIED PRODUCTION AND INSTALLATION The engine oil pan for the Porsche 911 Carrera consists of an upper and a lower part

TECHNOLOGY made from 30 percent glass fibre-reinforced Durethan BKV 30 H2.0 from Lanxess. The upper part is screw-connected to a pipeline carrier that is also made from polyamide 6. Using plastic instead of aluminium means that numerous functions can be shaped directly during injection moulding, thereby integrating them into the component. This has helped to reduce the number of separate parts that need to be manufactured and mounted for
the oil pan from 14 on the metal design to eight. The number of key work steps needed in the final assembly of the engine has also been cut from eight to two. For example, the bulkhead panel is integrated into the lower part of the pan and no longer has to be installed separately with a seal. Furthermore, the oil return lines of the turbocharger, the oil separator and the air-oil separator are combined in the pipeline carrier.
MORE THAN TWO KILOGRAMS OF WEIGHT SAVED Polyamide 6 has helped to reduce the weight of the upper and lower sections of the oil pan to 1.3 and 1.8 kilograms respectively. Overall, the oil pan is more than two kgs lighter than its aluminum predecessor, due to the lower density of the plastic and the optimised wall thicknesses. INJECTION MOULDING PROCESS WITH BENEFITS
A key argument in favour of manufacturing the oil pan using injection moulding was the huge potential that the process offers for integrating functions and thereby cutting costs. What’s more, as the parts are produced in a single step in the mould, there is no need for complex finishing work such as deburring die-cast aluminum parts. The lower energy costs are another benefit in favour of manufacturing injectionmoulded parts.
Xtrac launches latest family of gearboxes Transmission technology specialist Xtrac, has announced its latest family of gearboxes launched initially for use in that exclusive and rarefied segment of the global car market focused on the development of ultra-high performance road vehicles. Xtrac’s project P1227 Integrated Lightweight Electric Vehicle (ILEV) transmission system made its debut at the international Driving Future Motorsport Business Growth Conference. Arranged by the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), this event took place at the Sahara Force India Formula One Team’s headquarters at Silverstone on July 7, 2016 on the eve of the British Grand Prix and was supported by the UKTI Innovation is Great campaign. Xtrac has become a worldleader in the design and manufacture of transmission products and components, which are used throughout international motorsport and in particular within F1, IndyCar, Touring Car, Rallying, Rally Raid and many forms of sportscar and GT racing, including its major involvement in the World Endurance Championship, Le Mans 24 Hours, Daytona 24 Hour and Sebring 12 Hour races. Xtrac’s P1227 gearbox family has been developed to address the growing market requirement for single speed, lightweight and power dense electric vehicle (EV) transmissions. It offers a range of installation possibilities for fast
and powerful electric supercars with front-wheel drive, rear wheel drive or four-wheel drive configuration. “There is substantial innovation and intellectual property in the design of this new transmission system,” says James Setter, head of Xtrac’s Automotive and Engineering business unit, which focuses on developing
integration of the gearbox with numerous proprietary traction motors, and in particular, reducing its mass by almost 20 per cent compared with our previous P1092 electric vehicle transmission to provide the ultimate electric drive transaxle,” he added. The new transmission system can
be integrated with motors supplied by BorgWarner, GKN and YASA, all of whom worked with Xtrac on the integration of their technology into this transmission. The dual electric motors of the transmission system also provide an inherent torque vectoring capabilities. For lower power applications a single electric motor can be specified, reducing the overall vehicle weight further and requiring an even smaller space envelope. The highly

TECHNOLOGY configurable nature of the design also enables an open or a limited slip differential to be specified. In addition, the P1227 family of gearboxes offers a range of single gear ratios, as well as considerable motor-generator
configuration and hence vehicle installation possibilities. This enables the transmission, for example, to be installed within a 90-degree angle from the motors positioned vertically above through to horizontally in front of
the output. “The design draws on Xtrac’s precision design, analysis and manufacturing engineering capabilities,” says Setter, “ensuring that the ground helical gear sets, necessary for road
vehicle transmission systems, offer exceptional levels of NVH refinement for the most demanding silent driveline electric vehicle applications, as well as the durability required for this marketplace.”
Denso, Exa tie up set to transform way vehicle manufacturers work with suppliers Exa Corporation, a global innovator in simulation software for product engineering, and Denso Corporation, a leading supplier of advanced automotive technology, systems and components, have announced a new collaborative partnership that will transform the way carmakers have traditionally interacted with suppliers. The partnership enhances the product development process by moving key engineering and design work from automotive suppliers to a certified simulation-driven process that can be done much earlier in the development process, reducing the number of late-stage vehicle design changes. Using Exa’s digital simulation platform, Denso and Exa will create a validated PowerFLOW simulation database of Denso thermal products that will be offered to authorised automotive and heavy vehicle customers, providing the ability to simulate and integrate Denso’s technology and components early in the development process. This new process represents an important breakthrough in new vehicle design, as it replaces the current process which selects and tests
supplier components much later in the development cycle, resulting in costly fixes to already established designs. Steve Remondi, President and CEO of Exa, commented: “This expanded ecosystem of validated components and subsystems will greatly change how the global auto industry develops new vehicles – by enabling OEMs and suppliers to collaborate in the earliest stage of design. The insight enabled will significantly reduce the billions of dollars spent annually testing and retro-fixing late-stage design problems. Ultimately, automakers will move into production with greater confidence that their
supplier subsystems will perform as expected, achieving cost, time and quality targets.” Hirotsugu Takeuchi, Executive Director from Denso added: “After more than 15-years of working closely with Exa for the design and development of our own products, we see an enormous potential in this collaborative partnership with Exa to dramatically impact our joint OEM customers. By reducing the amount of time and effort required to fix late-stage design problems, we’re helping carmakers bring better vehicles to market, more efficiently.” Carmakers are experiencing a period of dramatic
change, and Exa’s simulationdriven design simulation platform will help them as they work to fully comply with dramatically changing global emissions and fuel efficiency regulations and simultaneously reduce their development costs and improve product quality and passenger comfort. Exa Corporation’s visualisation and simulation software helps designers and engineers produce better vehicles and equipment. As a design evolves, Exa accurately predicts the performance of that design while providing actionable insight to optimise the performance of the product. With Exa, the need for costly physical prototypes and expensive late-stage changes is reduced. Now, designers and engineers are freed from the risk of producing compromised products that do not meet market and regulatory requirements. Some of the most successful product companies in the world use Exa, including BMW, Delphi, Denso, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Hino, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kenworth, Komatsu, MAN, Nissan, Peterbilt, Peugeot, Renault, Scania, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo Trucks.
