P. THARYAN (ROY) f all the vehicles we got our hands on for this issue, the one that fascinated us the most was the Force Gurkha 2017 edition. It’s based on the old Mercedes G-wagen, and continues to look butch and attractive. We drove the vehicle on the outskirts of Pune and we
were impressed by its remarkable off road capabilities. With hardly any electronic features to boot, this vehicle is probably targeted at the hard core off roader, thanks to its 4X4 capabilities and its differential locks for the front and the rear axles. But what surprises us is why Force Motors insists on having plain Jane features within its cabin space? One can imagine how exciting this vehicle would be once its interiors are spruced up? On the other hand, the Volvo V90 Cross Country is a vehicle in a different league completely. Loaded with electronics and a host of upmarket features, this vehicle is the ideal vehicle for a large family that wants to travel in style and comfort not only on normal roads but also on some off road terrains. Other vehicles we have reviewed in this magazine include the Audi A3 and A4, the new Triumph Street Triple S and the BS IV Jupiter scooter from TVS.

REVIEW MOTO Z2 PLAY PRICE `27,999
is also providing a dedicated microSD card slot, for adding a card of up to 256GB. The device runs on the latest version of Android, 7.1.1 Nougat and also comes with Google Assistant. You get a largely stock Android experience which is great as it does not bog down your hardware.
The Moto Z Play was quite the ideal mid-ranger back when it was launched during the end of 2016. It’s successor, Moto Z2 Play, tries to maintain that image but how successful is it in doing that, we find out. DESIGN & DISPLAY Going with the trend of sleek looking mobiles, the Z2 Play sheds some serious amount of flab making it just 5.99mm thick. This really makes the phone look very premium and desirable but the camera bump on the back kind of ruins it by protruding out too much. This was done to make the phone compatible with previous Moto Mods. The rest of the dimensions remain the same as well. This means you still get a 5.5inch FullHD (1920x1080) Super AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass 3. Above the display is the speaker which is used as both an in call speaker and a loudspeaker. The display gets great viewing angles as expected and the brightness is also adequate for outdoor usage but the glass is a bit reflective. A physical key below the screen acts as a fingerprint sensor and can be used to navigate the OS by swiping left and right. The right side gets the two volume keys and the power key which are quite identical in size and thus a bit hard to identify when you are not looking. The bottom holds the 3.5mm audio jack and the USB Type-C port. The phone comes with nano-coating to make it resistant towards water splashes. The build quality feels great thanks to the all aluminum body and the Gorilla Glass up-front. The bezel area, however, makes handling this huge phone a bit hard in crowded places. BATTERY Due to the thinning process the phone went through, it had to settle for a smaller 3,000mAh battery which can still last you a day on heavy usage and about one and a half days easily on moderate usage. Charging is not a problem either as it comes bundled with a fast charger, that can charge the phone completely in close to 1 hour and 45 minutes. PERFORMANCE The updated SoC inside the mobile consists of a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 octa-core CPU coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and 4GB RAM. Day to day usage is butter smooth while gaming performance is satisfactory but not the best in class. We got some stutters and low framerates but all games were playable. The phone does not heat up even on heavy usage. Apart from the 64GB internal storage, Motorola
CAMERA The camera setup consists of a 12MP rear facing camera with Laser and Phase Detection autofocus and dual LED flash. There are options for turning on HDR and manual mode which provides a great level of control. Videos can be recorded at 4K resolution at 30fps while you can also shoot 120fps slow motion videos by dropping down to 720p. We were able to get some great and natural looking photos from the device and the large f.1.7 aperture also allowed for a great depth of field. However the phone still did struggle with low light shots and unwanted noise was visible. Focusing can also be a slight issue when you are very close to the subject. The videos do not get Optical Image Stabilization which we would have really appreciated. The front 5MP camera with dual LED flash however, performed great and we had no issues with it. VERDICT The Moto Z2 Play is a great phone, no doubt, but it is the price and what the competition is offering, that makes the shine of this smart looking mobile a bit dull. At Rs. 27,999/-, you get a great battery life, a fast charger, likable camera performance, premium looks that make every onlooker ogle your device and the trust that comes with the brand’s name.

It was two wins in a row for Sam Bird of DS Virgin Racing on July 15 and 16, 2017 at the FIA Formula E Qualcomm New York City ePrix. But for India’s Mahindra Racing, it was a very eventful Sunday when it recorded a double podium in the second race of the inaugural New York City ePrix weekend, the penultimate location of the 2016-17 FIA Formula E Championship. Felix Rosenqvist led teammate Nick Heidfeld to the line in a Mahindra Racing 2-3 finish in the second race. With these wins, Mahindra Racing has strengthened its hold on best-ever third place the Teams’ Championship. Following on from the team’s maiden win and double podium last month in June in Berlin, drivers Felix Rosenqvist and Nick Heidfeld put their mark on the race early on. The duo, driving the all-electric M3Electro racecar, both reached Formula E’s unique Super Pole shootout session to start the race from 2nd and 5th place respectively. Series young gun Rosenqvist took advantage of a clean starting line to pass eventual race winner Sam Bird into the first corner of the 49-lap feature. Heidfeld also made gains in the opening laps of the race to follow his teammate into the podium positions. The team was unable to hold the lead, as Bird took back P1 shortly after lap 10 of the race. Mahindra Racing had to however experience a disappointing first race on the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal circuit, which was run on Saturday.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes won the British Grand Prix for the fifth time on July 16, 2017. With this he cuts Sebastian Vettel’s championship lead to just a single point. For the Ferrari drivers Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, issues with the tyres hit their chances bad, even though Raikkonen finished third while Vettel had to be content with 7th position. Hamilton’s team mate Valtteri Bottas grabbed the second position, making it one-two for Mercedes in England. Force India drivers Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez managed to finish in the first ten, with eighth and ninth respectively. Max Verstappen managed to come in fourth for Red Bull Racing while his teammate Daniel Ricciardo managed a fifth. Nico Hulkenburg finished 6th for Renault whileFelipe Massa of Williams came in 10th. The race was dominated by Hamilton when he started from pole, leading all the way and setting the fastest lap of the race.

TECHNOLOGY Audi project “25th Hour”; Researching use of time in robot car What is a premium experience like in a self-driving car? Audi is researching this in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO. In the futuristic driving simulator, the experts on human-machine interaction investigated, for example, how the car interior can become a perfect workplace. The findings help the car maker to provide every user with a personally optimised automobile interior in the future. This research cooperation is part of the Audi project “25th Hour.” “When cars no longer have a steering wheel, premium mobility can be newly defined. In future, people traveling from A to B will be able to surf the Internet at leisure, play with their children – or do concentrated work,” says Melanie Goldmann, head of Culture and Trends Communication at Audi. “Together with the experts from the Fraunhofer Institute, we want to find out what is important for making optimal use of time in a self-driving car,” she said. For the laboratory experiment at the Fraunhofer Institute in Stuttgart, Audi has specially built a driving simulator that reproduces the situation of automated driving: with a variable interior and without a steering wheel. Large-scale projections convey the impression of a city drive by night. Via displays, the researchers can introduce digital distractions, the windows can be dimmed, and the colour of the lighting and noise background change. The focus was on young test persons, so-called millennials, who were born after 1980 and are regarded as receptive to selfdriving cars. In the experiment, the 30 test persons carried out various tasks requiring concentration – comparable with a work situation in a self-driving car. As they did this, their brain activity was measured (EEG), as well as reaction times and error quotas, and subjective impressions were noted. The results of the EEG were unambiguous: in an environment without disturbances, the human brain is more relaxed. The windows were dimmed, the light settings optimized, and digital messages were suppressed. Tasks were then solved better and more quickly. The test persons also stated that they were less distracted. By contrast, a driving situation that was “close to reality” in the robot car made greater demands on the brain: in this case, the participants saw some advertising, received information from social networks, and did not benefit from pleasant lighting settings or dimmed windows. “The results show that the task is to find
18 | MOTOWN INDIA | AUGUST 2017
the right balance. In a digital future, there are no limits to what can be imagined. We could offer everything in the car – really overwhelm the user with information,” says Goldmann, adding that “But we want to put people at the centre of attention. The car should become a smart membrane. The right information should reach the user at the right time.” Today drivers spend an average of about 50 minutes per day at the wheel. In the 25th Hour project, Audi is investigating how this time could be used better in a self-driving automobile. The project is based on the
assumption that an intelligent humanmachine interface will learn the user’s individual preferences and adapt flexibly. In this way, Audi customers will gain full control of their time – they will be masterful time managers.

TECHNOLOGY
Continental CUbE helps tech development for driverless vehicles More and more people are flocking to cities. According to a 2014 UN study, two-thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities by 2050 – and they will also be driving their cars there. However, it would perhaps be more accurate to say that they’ll be trying to drive their cars there, because global traffic jam statistics tell us that individual “mobility” in cities will be severely restricted. The current average speed in London, for example, was only 7.8 miles per hour in 2016. Accidents, emissions, loss of time, notorious parking problems and stress are the ever-present consequences of this concentration of traffic in urban areas – and in view of the fact that the world’s megacities are growing, this is one of the reasons why future mobility is radically evolving. The technology company Continental is using its corporate expertise in automation, new mobility concepts, and electrification to develop solutions for the urban transport of the future and for a better quality of life in cities. “The future of individual mobility in cities is autonomous and electric, and it will become part of the shared economy,” says Frank Jourdan, member of the Executive Board of Continental AG and Chairman of the Chassis & Safety Division Management Board. “This is why we’re developing cross-divisional solutions for driverless robo-taxis – and we will be starting with practical testing this year. Continental has therefore access to an almost complete product portfolio of its own sensors,
www.motownindia.com
actuators, control units and communication and networking technology,” he adds. According to a study by the consulting company Roland Berger, driverless vehicles will account for around a quarter of transportation services by the year 2030 – and this potential revolution in the world of the automotive industry was a clear motive for Continental to initiate a corporationwide development project named “SelfDriving Car”. Continental has built a demo vehicle to enable driverless mobility, especially in cities. The vehicle, named CUbE (Continental Urban Mobility Experience) will start its trials at Continental’s Frankfurt location, which contains a typical city infrastructure such as street signs, cross-traffic, pedestrian crossings and curbs, providing optimum conditions for a complex and therefore realistic route. Many aspects of the technology used in the vehicle are based on the driver assistance systems and sensors that are already installed in today’s serial production vehicles, but new technologies are also used, such as the laser sensor. Based on this expertise, these systems will be further developed to control the vehicle completely autonomously. “The trials will be used to identify all the essential technical requirements that enable safe, driverless passenger transport in urban areas,” says Dr. Andree Hohm, Head of the Self-Driving Car project at Continental and adds that “This helps us to find answers to questions about our
product strategy and to deliver leading technology for individual mobility in the future – including driverless systems.” Thanks to the CUbE, Continental is among the pioneers in crucial technology for robo-taxis. “In recent months, the topic has really moved into the limelight,” says Jourdan. “This tells us that we have chosen exactly the right time for our bold approaches to practical testing, enabling us to pave the way towards the future,” he adds. Driverless vehicles will use a great number of technologies with which Continental has vast experience – from sensors and control units to software algorithms, braking systems and powertrain technologies.

he Volvo V90 Cross Country, though shaped like an estate car, promises to offer the best of both the SUV and sedan worlds. We test drive it to find out.
Going by today’s popular design trends prevalent in the Indian car industry, the Volvo V90 Cross Country does not come across as a very exciting design. It’s more on the lines of a station wagon or an estate as we call that in India. Estates have never been popular in India, but the V90 Cross Country is in a different league altogether with its features, performance and its various capabilities. Yes, capabilities. That’s the area where it outshines even some of the present day SUVs and sedans. The car sits on very handsome 20 inches 10-spoke black and diamond cut wheels. The 245/45 R20 Pirelli P Zero tyres give it a confident look, as though the car can take on any terrain. And surprisingly it does too with great elan. As smart as the front is the rear of the vehicle with those almost L shaped LED tail lamps, the high gloss black decor side windows, black wheel arches, bright integrated roof rails, panoramic sunroof and dual integrated tail pipes. It has a length of 4936 mm, a width of 1879 mm (it increases to 2019 mm when you take into account the mirrors), a wheelbase of 2941 mm and a height of 1475 mm. The car comes with a lower profile spare tyre, as compared to the regular four tyres fitted on the vehicle. That could be a tad disconcerting for many drivers, especially in India, if they were to ever have a puncture.
INTERNAL DESIGN AND FEATURES Step inside, and the magic begins. The car has Nappa leather seats with amber in charcoal interior. It’s then you realise, this car has all the finer features of the popular XC90 SUV and the elegant S90 sedan. There are not too many confusing control buttons in the car, only a 12 inch tab-like screen on the centre console area that has almost all the functions to change settings from that of the radio to navigation to the air conditioner and to the car’s other functional settings. Now beyond the touch of the finger are the real buttons that include the engine start stop button, a scroll button to change the drive mode and two electronic buttons “A” and “P” for auto holding the vehicle in the Drive mode and for Parking respectively. There are four different drive modes to select from: Eco, Comfort, Off Road and Dynamic. The car comes with 4-zone electronic climate control, cooled glove box and heated steering wheel. Even though the tab screen gives the car a very upmarket look and feel, the only flip side is when you are driving, you really cannot operate it as you need to place you finger on each command on the screen to activate it. Obviously you cannot do this without taking your eyes off the road ahead. That could be dangerous. I personally feel that more manual buttons are much easier to operate when you are on the move. But then I must also confess that the new generation of buyers prefer modern technology like the tab settings. Though the seats are immensely comfortable, both in the front and the rear, the front seats get electric adjustments with memory settings and massage functions. The seats in front are ventilated and they also get power adjustable side and

WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience lumbar support, power cushion extensions, etc. There is ample use of leather inside, from the seats, to the dashboard and even the steering. The inside of the car has decent amount of storage space for your bottles and the centre console arm rest has outlets for USB and aux in. The car comes with power folding rear headrests. The car has a huge boot space which can be increased dramatically by pushing down the rear seats with a touch of buttons placed in the boot space. So from 560 litres of space you get 1,526 litres. The boot lid is power operated and inside there is a grocery bag holder and luggage net and back rest. There is also a 12V outlet in the luggage area. From the inside of the boot space you can also open a small window to the rear seating space. This is primarily to squeeze in something long like your skis that cannot fit inside the boot space. This feature is quite interesting. But one of those days when you are being chauffeured around, and you are seated at the back, which is the scenario with expensive cars, you will miss the massage functions terribly. The only controls at the back are that for the AC vents and the temperature setting. Well, there is an arm rest with two cup holders, if that is any consolation. You can listen to music streaming out from the 19 speakers of Bowers and Wilkins upmarket audio system.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE Hey, but who is going to sit at the back? The car is powered by a 1969 cc diesel engine which delivers a 235hp and a peak torque of 480Nm. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic all wheel drive transmission. The D5 diesel motor surprises you with its extreme refinement. As for the turbo lag expected from diesel mills, this one has none. Yes, almost none, because of the Power Pulse system which the car comes with. An electrically operated air compressor feeds air into a storage tank by sucking air from the air intake. The tank in turn diverts the entire compressed air to spool the turbo,
www.motownindia.com
#VOLVOV90CROSSCOUNTRY so every time you step on the throttle you get an almost instant response. Yes, it’s almost like magic. For city driving, it’s the Eco and Comfort modes which are ideal and when you want to be a little more aggressive on the roads, you can move the drive mode to Dynamic. For the rough roads you can opt for the
Off Road mode. Each mode automatically alters steering and engine response as well as the rear air suspension. The off road mode can only be activated if you drive below 20kms per hour speed. It basically increases the ride height by a few centimetres. With air suspension at the back, and double wishbones in front, the ride quality is top notch.
SAFETY FEATURES Volvo cars have always been built perfect on the safety front. I am not just talking about the airbags and inflatable curtains, EBAs, etc or support systems like hill descent control, hill start assists, head up display, park assist camera, etc. It’s the radar based safety system which sees adaptive cruise control
www.motownindia.com
at its best. You can maintain a safe distance behind a moving vehicle and in case the vehicle in front stops abruptly, your car too screeches to a halt.
VERDICT All in all, the Volvo V90 Cross Country is like a Magic Box on four wheels. The more you dig inside, the more you drive it, the more it has to offer, and the more joyful you get. Be it its plush interiors, its overall features and the way it drives and handles, this car could very well redefine the way estates have been looked upon in India. This could be the real estate for many a smart and matured driver.

ith its body design based on an old version of the Mercedes G-Wagen, the 2017 Force Grukha Xplorer 4X4 now comes with a BS IV engine and some spruced up features. We check it out for you.
EXTERNAL DESIGN AND FEATURES The three-door Force Gurkha Xplorer with a shorter wheel base is a smart looking vehicle. Designed on the shape of an old Mercedes G-Wagen, this iconic looking vehicle continues to turn heads. The Force Gurkha today comes in two variants--Force Gurkha Xplorer and Force Gurkha Xpedition. The Xplorer comes in two versions, one a three-door with a short wheel base of 2400mm and a larger 5-door with a wheel base of 2750mm. Both the models have 4X4 capability. The Force Gurkha Xpedition comes only in one version with a wheel base of 2750mm and has a 4X2 capability. The latter is meant mainly for families who prefer highway drives. We got our hands on the hard top 3-door Force Gurkha 4X4 Xplorer. The 2017 Xplorer has been spruced up and comes with a new facia with front and rear steel bumpers. Despite its boxy looks, the vehicle has a great macho appeal and sits on 245/70 R16 all terrain tyres with smart wheel arches. The Gurkha Xplorer also comes with a lot of add ons which make the vehicle look stunning. These include alloys and off roading tyres, front bull guard, rear guard, roof carrier with fog lamp rod, shovel holder, axe holder, roof rail, windshield guard, body colour spoiler, jerry can holder and ladder, door visor, winch and fog lamps. Now with all these snazzy fitments, the vehicle looked extremely attractive.
INTERNAL DESIGN AND FEATURES The inside of the Force Gurkha Xplorer has been improved with a new steering wheel, better placement of the gear lever and the hand brake etc. But what has not changed is the interior fit and finish. I was a tad disappointed with the interiors, especially the quality of plastics used, the lack of storage space for bottles and cups etc, lack of adjustments in the steering wheel for rake or reach, quality of steering wheel and fit and finish. It looked as though the vehicle was only meant to cater to a hard core off roader

who really did not bother about the comfort and aesthetics of the interiors. Even though the quality of seats has improved vastly compared to the earlier model, the overall appeal of the interiors still lacks class. The vehicle does not have any electronic infused features, be it power windows, electronically adjusted seats or electronically adjusted drive features. But that can be overlooked, since that in short means less maintenance for the vehicle.
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE The Force Gurkha Xplorer is powered by 2596cc diesel engine that produces just about 85hp and a peak torque of 230Nm. This, when compared to competition, is rather low. Yet, the vehicle has been improved dramatically when it comes to its ride and handling. This 2017 model also gets a new G28/5 manual transmission with five forward gears and 1 reverse. This gearbox is far superior to the one that was in the older model. The vehicle now sits on a new high strength C-in-C chassis with coil spring suspension on all four wheels. Body roll and jerks have been contained to a great extent in this new Xplorer. The Gurkha has been known for its off road capability, especially with its four wheel drive feature and its front and rear differential locks. None of the vehicles in its class offers diff locks and this is a massive advantage when one has to indulge in real off roading. In terms of capability as an off-roader, the Force Gurkha continues to be perfect. Four wheel drive options in both high and low, apart from front and rear differential locks are standard in the XPlorer. The snorkel air intake also ensures that the vehicle can wade in deep waters, much more than 550mm claimed by the company. Despite the treacherous terrain I drove on, not once did I have to deploy diff locks. I wondered as to why the company cannot offer another variant with a 4X4 option but without diff locks? Please remember, diff locks are engaged when wheels are perched precariously and it guarantees equal wheel speed on either the front wheels or the rear wheels or on all 4 wheels, depending on the diff locks engaged. This prevents spinning of wheels. Only real off roaders know when to engage the diff locks. The moment the diff locks have done their job, it needs to be disengaged or it can bomb your transmission. Only a disciplined driver will appreciate such a feature.
VERDICT The new Force Gurkha is definitely a much better version of the previous model. All the company needs is to iron out some of the irritants within its cabin area, if the company wants some of the customers in the city to go for this handsome brute. The Force Gurkha Xplorer continues to remain a true explorer.

he A3 has been Audi’s most affordable model in India. It has contributed a lot to the German manufacturer’s sales volumes here in India. A few months back the A3 facelift was introduced, it features some aesthetic changes and a more efficient 1.4L petrol engine. The new Audi A3 is a little more functional, sporty and lavish but continues to remain the workhorse it was originally intended to be.
EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES Audi’s entire lineup resonates a very sophisticated and neat design language. The A3 is no exception to that, it features

clean straight lines and gets a bold stance. The list of changes includes a larger hexagonal front grille which makes the fascia look bolder than before. Audi has also redone the headlamps and LED DRLs. On offer are projector lamps with an almost surround like LED DRL setup. This, however, is not standard fitment. Adding more flair to the front is a revised bumper with larger air intakes along with subtle hints of chrome. The front looks chiseled and neat with a muscular hood adding to this sedan’s bold character. The side features new smart looking 16-inch 5-spoke alloys and a bold shoulder line.
Audi has also introduced redesigned tail lamps in the rear along with a new LED pattern. The rear also gets a refreshed bumper and dual tip exhausts. The changes which have been made on this facelift do give the sedan a smart and sporty look while keeping it very functional and sophisticated.
INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES Inside the cabin of the new A3 one can find a stark similarity with the design language of the exterior. The cabin is sleek and refined, which only goes to compliment this sedan’s design scheme. The dash

maintains a similar layout and does not see much change. The multi function steering wheel has been updated and definitely looks more contemporary. Audi has bolted on a suave looking three spoke steering wheel which goes well with interior design. Also on offer is the Audi Phone Box for wireless charging of select devices. Features such as dual zone automatic climate control, retractable MMI display, bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity and a lot more have been added for the convenience of passengers. What Audi could have included is push button start stop and more contemporary features such
as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which are at present being widely offered even in mass market cars.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE We got our hands on the 1.4L, 4 cylinder, TFSI turbocharged petrol variant of the A3. Like the A4, Audi has done away with the 1.8L engine and introduced the more efficient 1.4L variant. Capable of unleashing 150 horses this engine is more than able and quite quick through the paces. The new engine also comes with Audi’s Cylinder on Demand (COD) technology which ensures a fuel efficient drive. The company has claimed a fuel efficiency figure of 19.2kms to a liter which is quite impressive. The COD tech ensures all four cylinders are running when power is needed, in situations like coasting, idling or even at lower speeds two of the four cylinders shut down. The engine has been mated to a 7-speed S Tronic Dual Clutch

The gear operations are smooth giving the driver a seamless and powerful experience. The ride is comfy and jolt free with the suspension soaking in most of the undulations and bumps rather well. The overall engineering standard is top notch and leaves very little room to complain. The performance of the A3 is admirable but will not leave you breathless.
VERDICT The Audi A3 is essentially a workhorse which was made to delight customers looking to upgrade to a more premium brand. It has all the underpinnings of the Audi brand and offers a more refined experience. Some subtle changes and some bold ones do ensure this new A3 is a tad bit more functional and sporty. For the asking price of Rs.30.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), one cannot possibly find a better deal.

every time you floor it. The A4 35 TDI can achieve a top speed of 237kmph and gets a 0-100kmph time of just 7.7 seconds. The addition of paddle shifters ensures you have the capability of milking the engine for what it’s worth. Audi has also made this new A4 120kgs lighter than its predecessor. That’s not all, it is also 7pc more powerful and 7pc more fuel efficient than the outgoing model. The sedan gets a mileage figure of 18.25kms to a litre which in my opinion enhances the versatility of this package. Not only does it dish out healthy performance figures but it also serves up mileage figures which are class leading for this segment.
Holding true to the heritage of the Audi brand, the new A4 35 TDI is also immensely pleasurable to drive. You get accurate control over the vehicle and thanks to a well engineered suspension you also get a very smooth ride. The steering did feel a bit wooden but is precise to inputs and the braking performance will only inspire more confidence in this vehicle’s capabilities. Audi has also added various driver aides on the A4 to ensure maximum control. Also on offer are four driving modes - Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual.

This bestseller from Audi has got a shot of spinach in its arm to make it a Popeye amongst competitors. It packs the right punch, something that was previously lacking and with the addition of features such as Audi Virtual Cockpit, Audi Smartphone Interface and new Audi MMI Display, the new A4 35 TDI will surely impress.

TRIUMPH STREET TRIPLE S
PETER PARKER

hen it comes to strength, the rule of thumb is, the bigger the better. But looks can be deceiving. Take for example, Peter Parker, the average looking college teen who is also the wall crawling superhero ‘Spiderman’. Despite having the looks of an average person, he has the reflexes of a cat and strength that can rival a whole ring full of wrestlers. It is a similar case with the new Triumph Street Triple S as well. The S variant is the lowest of the three Street Triple models, the other being R and RS, yet has a lot to woo riders and naked bike lovers.
DESIGN & STYLE If you are a motorcycle enthusiast then you will instantly recognise the iconic twin headlamps which are also seen on the higher end Speed Triple bikes from Triumph. Whether you like them or not, is subjective. For me this is the perfect embodiment of what a street fighter should look like. The Street Triple S has a confident stance when it is at a standstill, awaiting its return on the streets. The sharp looks are a premonition of what to expect when you bring the engine to life. The rear has a sleek tail lamp that tapers off towards the inside along the frame of the bike which looks like the open mouth of an alligator due to its design resembling the inside upper jaw of the said predator. The engine area is the only part that looks bulky, albeit well built. Overall the bike looks like it went to the gym and came back with chiseled and muscular lines all over. The only design choice that put me off was the side stand. It is placed very close to the foot pegs and is the same colour as them. This makes it a bit hard to find the stand when you want to swing it open. Another thing that some riders with shorter height would struggle a bit with would be the 810mm seat height. Otherwise the seat cushion is comfortable and the foot pegs have also been position well to provide a good riding experience for both long and short trips. Unlike the outgoing model, this one gets a pillion seat for added convenience although I doubt you would be using it much. The instrument cluster consists of an LCD panel and an analogue tachometer. You can view things such as current speed, trip distance, toggle riding modes and check fuel level on the LCD panel which is easily visible under the bright light of the sun. The rearview mirrors are positioned nicely and are big enough to see the jealous faces of others as you leave them behind riding this beauty.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE The new Street Triple S comes with a new 765cc engine derived from the Daytona and it puts out some impressive figures of 111.4hp @ 11,250rpm and 73Nm @ 10,421rpm. This is definitely a step up over the previous incarnation of the bike that had a 675cc engine. Despite the bike not having the biggest of engines around, it delivers a thrilling performance and you get instant power at the slightest of inputs. The light weight of the bike aids in not only in achieving a great power to weight ratio but also makes the bike very nimble. You can swivel in and out of traffic with great ease. Apart from raw power you have loads of electronics aiding you. There are two riding modes - rain and road, which change the dynamics of the bike and how it responds to throttle inputs. There is switchable traction control and ABS to make your rides safe. The twin 310mm discs upfront combined with a single 220mm disc in the rear have a lot of braking power. The suspension setup however is stiff. This makes the bike great around corners but also makes your ride through bad city roads a bit bumpy.

VERDICT The new Street Triple S makes a lot of improvement over the older Street Triple 675 and then goes on to challenge the competition head on with the attractive pricing of Rs 8,71,500 (ex-showroom Delhi). It is pitted against other street fighters like the Kawasaki Z900, DSK Benelli TNT 899 and the yet to be launched Ducati 797. Personally, I feel the Street Triple S is one of the best looking naked two wheelers you can wrap your legs around and it is a great pick for enthusiasts who like a balance of speed and everyday practicality.

design for the stop lamp and turn indicators. Unlike traditional designs, the TVS Jupiter can be refueled without the rider having to get off the scooter thanks to an external filling feature which is quite functional. Additionally TVS is also offering many convenience features on the Jupiter to make it quite appealing. On offer are features such as USB charging, retractable bag hook, dual sided handlebar locks, large under seat storage and a patented E-Z centre stand. The engine has been mated to an automatic CVT which caters to a smooth and thrilling ride. The Jupiter pulls neatly and can get going quite fast. An almost instant throttle response ensures you get going with ease and even at speeds in excess of 70kmph the scooter does not feel out of breath. Thanks to its light weight, the Jupiter is agile and

can easily be negotiated even through the tightest of streets that Indian cities have to offer. TVS has also added their Sync braking setup as standard across all variants of the Jupiter. We tested the variant fitted with 130mm drum brakes in the front and rear. The brakes are progressive but could have done with a little more bite. Overall braking performance is admirable and gets the job done. The suspension also facilitates adequate comfort and control. The Jupiter rides over bad and bumpy road quite easily. The quality of materials used in its construction and the overall build quality of this scooter is rather good.
VERDICT While the Jupiter has been a popular model selling more than 1.5 million units, these new additions give it a touch of zest. Also aiding the convenience and practicality of daily use are a host of useful features. All of this paired with a chic design and solid performance makes the Jupiter a hot pick for 2017.

B2B NEWS Saitama City, Honda, Yamaha begin evaluating e-motorcycles Saitama City in Japan, Honda Motor Co and Yamaha Motor Co will begin evaluation testing towards the expansion of the use of electric motorcycles. As part of Saitama City’s “E-Kizuna Project” measures to promote the spread of electric vehicles, this collaborative initiative by the three parties also aims to resolve the issues in areas which are lacking in transport accessibility. This evaluation testing programme marks the first joint initiative between a local government body (which aims for a low-carbon society in which electric vehicles can be used in safety and comfort), and the two motorcycle manufacturers (which aim for the spread of EV motorcycles). It is an important step towards the reduction of CO2 emissions and the spread of electric motorcycles. Evaluation testing will utilise Honda and Yamaha’s electric technology and Saitama City’s existing infrastructure in order to realise a low-carbon society and verify the extent of improvement in transportation convenience in areas lacking in transport accessibility. Building on its previous initiatives towards the expansion of use of electric automobiles, Saitama City hopes that by encouraging the usage of EV motorcycles as well, this evaluation testing program will contribute towards realising a lowcarbon society in which a wide range of electric mobility options can be used in safety and comfort.

It will launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance car arm. Full details of these models will be announced at a later date.
