he Goan rains were not a deterrent, rather it added to the fun quotient when it came to driving the Kia Seltos SUV. Kia Motors India is offering this vehicle with a plethora of permutations and combinations. The Kia Seltos SUV is being offered with a dual trim concept. One is the Tech line and the other is the GT line. The former is a premium looking vehicle that offers family oriented comforts and technology features. The GT line has a sporty design and very youthful in its styling and features. Thus the variants in the Tech line are the High Tech –eXtreme (HTX), the High Tech –Klass (HTK) and the High Tech-Energy (HTE). The GT Line consists of the GT Line-eXtreme (GTX), the GT Line-Klass (GTK) and the GT LineEnergy (GTE). Are you confused? Well, there is more to the story. The Kia Seltos is being offered with three BS VI compliant engine options. One is the 1.4 litre Turbo Gasoline Direct Injection petrol engine. This again has an option of either a 6 speed manual transmission or a 7 speed Dual Clutch Transmission or DCT. The engine produces a peak 138hp and a torque of 242Nm. The second engine is a naturally aspirated 1.5 litre petrol engine that also has an option of a 6 speed manual transmission and an Automatic Infinitely variable transmission (IVT). This engine produces 113.5hp and a peak torque of 144Nm.

This one also produces a peak 113.5hp, but a peak torque of 250Nm. For record’s sake the 1.4 litre TGDI petrol engine delivers a fuel efficiency of 16.1kmpl for the manual transmission version and 16.5 kmpl for the DCT verison. As for the VGT 1.5 litre diesel engine, this churns out 21 kmpl for the manual transmission version and 18kmpl for the automatic version. The Seltos has an overall length of 4315mm, an overall width of 1800mm, an overall height of 1620mm and a wheelbase of 2610mm. HTX model with the six speed automatic transmission. Let me reiterate at this point, the models I drove were the top end variants in its respective class. Now let me begin to describe the vehicle and its features, including my drive experience.

EXTERIORS The front has the Kia signature tiger nose grille with a sweeping LED light bar. Zoom your eyes into the grille area and you notice its chrome diamond knurling pattern. It has a smartly designed lower air dam and bumper. The GT line gets front skid plates with red accents and the GT line emblem in one corner of the grille. It’s a lot of LED in the SUV as it gets crown jewel LED headlamps, heartbeat LED DRLs and Ice cube LED fog lamps. The side profile is equally refreshing with a floating roof design and the SUV has a door garnish with silver accent line. In the GT line, this line has a red accent. Not to be missed are the beltline chrome

moulding, roof rails, sun roof and shark fin antenna which is standard across the variants. The top end Tech Line vehicles get R 17 hyper metallic alloys while the top end GT lines vehicles get R 17 crystal cut alloys. Coming to the rear, the vehicles get connected LED lamp and tailgate garnish along with reflectors with air dam design. The vehicles also get a dual muffler design with rear skid plates and a rear spoiler. . The GT line gets a GT line emblem on one side of the tail gate, while the rear skid plates get a red accent here.

INTERIORS Everything looks and feels rich inside the Seltos cabin with the comfortable seats, the 2 step recline rear seats being 60:40 split with folding feature and a centre arm rest, the smart dashboard, the connected infotainment along with the D cut or flat bottomed steering wheel and an automatic air conditioner and rear AC vents. The steering wheel is tilt

adjustable and telescopic with buttons mounted on it for various functions. There is provision for quick wireless charging (10W) with air cooling function. Let me talk of the interiors of the GTX automatic. This SUV has LED sound mood lights, ambient mood lighting, rear door sun shade curtain, sporty alloy pedals, black leatherette sports seats with red stitching, a 10.25 inches HD touch screen navigation, rear view camera with guidance, driving rear view monitor, an air purifier with perfume diffuser, a fixed arm rest, a 7 inch colour display cluster and a 8.0inch head up display. The front windshield and windows of the vehicle are UV cut. It has rain sensing wipers.

But it’s the manual top end GT line which gets a few more features that are not there in the automatic DCT variant. These are an electric sunroof, ventilated front seats, 8-way driver power seat, BOSE premium 8 speaker sound system, 360 deg camera surround view monitor, a blind view monitor in the cluster LCD and front parking sensors. The top end Techline diesel vehicle gets more or less similar features like the GT Line top end manual, except for a HUD. I found the legroom, shoulder room and head room quite adequate, both for the front as well as rear. There is adequate storage space, with spaces to store in the front console armrest, front console cup holders, glove box, bottle holders and map pockets as well as a rear arm rest cup holder. The boot has a luggage capacity of 433 litres with a wide mouth to fit in large dimension luggage. Since this is a UVO connected car, the UVO Lite app once downloaded into your smartphone has its own set of exciting features. The company is giving a three year free subscription for this app that has around 37 smart features. The prominent features include audio source changes, set your air purifier levels and the sound mood lamp, live car tracking, find my car, remote engine start/stop, remote AC control, remote smart pure air ON, TPMS status, fuel level information, stolen vehicle tracking, geo fencing, among others.

PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY Now as I took turns driving the three different variants, I realised that each of the three has

20 | MOTOWN INDIA | AUGUST 2019

its own set of merits. For example, the GT Line 1.4 litre petrol automatic variant is the only one that comes with multi drive modes and multi traction modes. But then you need to remember, this variant does not have Bose speakers, driver power seat, sunroof, ventilated front seats among others. The 7-speed DCT is however very responsive and quick on its feet. It drives well without any fuss. On the other hand, the top end GT Line 1.4 litre petrol manual comes with a lot of bells and whistles. Even the gear shifts are prompt and impactful. You can feel the engine power and almost no turbo lag as you step on the accelerator. Ride and handling too are impressive and braking too is very effective. Whether it is wading through water or going through some bad pot holed roads in Goa, the Seltos soaked in

all the bumps quite efficiently.

VERDICT

The Seltos comes with a smart key and a push button start and also offers cruise control. The diesel automatic is also quite nimble and swift thanks to the torque convertor feature. There is no compromise on the safety front with the GT line top end models which come with side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold control and vehicle stability management. The top end Tech line only comes with ABS with EBD and dual air bags for the driver and passenger only.

If I were to choose among the three different variants I drove, I will opt for the GT Line 1.4 litre TGDI petrol variant that comes with a manual transmission. This one impressed me the most, especially since it is loaded with a lot of features. So has Kia Motors India made it confusing for customers with the number of variants it is offering? To some extent it has, but the Indians love to evaluate a car very carefully and the Kia offering will only be a puzzle that they will love to solve. On the whole, the Kia Seltos SUV is a tiger nosed marvel.

mode. The vehicle was zippy and even at those sharp corners, the tyres screeched but stood its ground, balancing the vehicle superbly on the track. Now this car comes with paddle shifters and mind you unlike conventional cars where these shifters are used to manually change gears to have some fun kicking around the vehicle, in the Kona, the paddle shifters are used for Adjustable Regenerative Braking. Thus these paddle shifters are basically regeneration paddles.

Kona Electric offers different driving modes (Eco+, Eco, Comfort and Sport). Since we had just three rounds to ourselves on the F1 track, we opted for the Sport

To make things a bit more clear let me explain to all the novices out there that when you apply the brakes in a vehicle to stop it, the kinetic energy gets converted

WHEELZ & ROADZ

A driving experience

into heat energy as the brake pads get into action and this heat is dissipated into the atmosphere. This energy that is wasted or dissipated into the air can be tapped. This is the basic principle of regenerative brakes. It is basically an energy recovery mechanism. Thus with the help of electric motors in fully electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, regenerative braking takes place. How is that? One of the properties of an electric motor is that, when it is run in one direction, it converts electrical energy into mechanical energy that makes the wheels of a vehicle move. But the same motor when it is run in the opposite direction, it plays the role of an electric generator, converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. This electrical energy is stored in lithium ion batteries to be used by the motor to move the vehicle. It is similar to filling up your fuel tank in a conventional ICE vehicle. Now regenerative braking gets into action when the brake pedal is depressed as well as when the vehicle is decelerating. Coming back to the Hyundai Kona, when decelerating or coasting downhill, electric motor can generate electricity rather than consuming it. This charges you high voltage batteries and extends your driving range. This is shown on the power charge gauge in the instrument cluster. When regenerative braking takes places you can see the amount of charging take place with the number of bars on the screen increasing gradually. Hyundai Kona Electric allows four different levels of regenerative braking from 0 to 3. The higher the level, the greater is the amount of regenerative braking and more aggressively the vehicle decelerates as you take the foot off the vehicle. With the paddle shifters on right and left of the steering wheel, you can select your levels which get indicated on the bottom of the instrument panel’s LCD screen. The left shifter increases the level while the right decreases the level of regenerative braking and increases the deceleration level. Thus at level 0 there is no regenerative braking. So even if you lift your foot off the accelerator, the vehicle is coasting away. Higher levels are ideal for stop and go traffic or when you are going down a hill. One must also remember that the levels of regenerative braking using paddle shifters act different in

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

terms of response in different drive modes. At the track, I must confess I was driving at 0 level to get as much momentum as possible! The Hyundai Kona also has a function of a one pedal driving. This is controlled by the left paddle shifter. While you are coasting, you can press and hold the left paddle. That applies a higher level of regenerative braking for your speed. This will bring your vehicle to a complete stop. You have to step on the accelerator to move the vehicle forward. In normal driving, with this function activated, you need not use your brake pedal at all, only the left paddle and your accelerator. If you release the left paddle while travelling more than 3.2 km per hour, regenerative braking returns to your previous preset levels. But at speeds lower than 3.2 kmph if you release the left paddle shifter, regenerative braking remains at its maximum level. Electric vehicles need to be charged and for this, Hyundai Motor India is providing customers with two chargers along with the car – A portable charger and an AC Wall Box Charger. The Portable charger can be plugged into any normal 3 Pin 15 Amp socket. This charger can top up daily running of 50Kms in less than 3 Hours. Whereas AC Wall Box charger (7.2 kW) can top-up charge the vehicle within 1 hour for running 50Kms. When it comes to safety, the Kona Electric comes with Electric Parking Brake with Autohold, 6 Airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, Vehicle Stability Management, Hill Assist Control, Rear Camera with Guideline, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, All Disc Brakes and a Virtual Engine sound System (VESS). Unfortunately, the drive lasted barely a few minutes and we really could not test out the VESS.

VERDICT The Hyundai Kona Electric will definitely change the perception of Indians about electric cars. No longer will they be looked upon as primitively designed and shaped cars with lithium ion batteries. With modern features and a technology that is so sophisticated, the Hyundai Kona Electric can definitely give a modern ICE car a run for its money.

Introducing BENTLEY’S new flying bees Bentley Motors’ historic site in Crewe is already famous for producing the models that have carried its “flying B” emblem on the bonnet for one hundred years, but thanks to a new biodiversity initiative, the company is now creating a buzz with the introduction of 120,000 “flying bees” of a different kind. Bentley produces some of the most luxurious cars in the world under the brand names Bentayga, Continental, Flying Spur and Mulsanne. With the help of local beekeepers, two national hives, which are collectively home to 120,000 British Apis Mellifera honey bees, have been successfully installed on grassland at the edge of the Bentley site. The area has been sown with bee friendly wild flowers – and as it borders the Cheshire countryside, it is proving to be the perfect habitat for the bees, who are settling in well and showing promising signs for the first honey harvest at the end of the summer. Each hive has the potential to create around 15kg – or approximately 50 jars of honey.

ROAV A0 DASHCAM (`5490/-) Roav by Anker Innovations has introduced its advanced entry level ‘Dashcam A0’ in India, engineered with class leading panoramic optics, built-in Wi-Fi, a dedicated App. The dashcam has been priced at Rs 5490. Roav A0 DashCam attaches to your windshield to track and record every drive in wide-angle thanks to its 170 degree wide angle lens. The Roav A0 when connected to the ROAV Dashcam App (Supports both, Android & Apple, using your smartphones Wi-Fi) streams video from the dashcam to your smartphone to view and download.

Peter Bosch, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Manufacturing explains: “Although our Pyms Lane site is over 80 years old, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our environmental footprint and achieve our goal of carbon neutral operations. “We already have the largest solar car port in the UK on our site - which means that all of our electricity use is now either solar or certified green – so we’ve also started to look at ways we can use our site to

increase local biodiversity. “Bees populations are in decline in the UK, so installing two hives to help boost biodiversity is a great way to make use of the grassland at the edge of the site. “Our “flying bees” are honeybees that have been bred by local beekeepers with over fifty years’ experience. With their help, we’re checking on them every week and it’s great to see that they’re already starting to produce the first Bentley honey”.

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

That aside, the dashcam’s setup can be managed from the App itself through the smartphone, rather than reaching for the camera itself. The recording starts automatically when the camera is plugged into the car’s cigarette lighter socket The camera supports rich and clear videos, with an advanced chipset, 6 lens elements, and Wide Dynamic Range image balancing combined to record every drive in crisp 1080p HD resolution. It has been built to withstand extreme heat and cold for reliable use in virtually in any environment. The amendments in the Bill mainly focus on issues relating to improving road safety, citizens’ facilitation while dealing with the transport department, strengthening rural transport, last mile connectivity and public transport, automation and computerization and enabling online services. Some of the important areas of amendment are as follows: ROAD SAFETY In the area of road safety, the Bill proposes to increase penalties to act as deterrent against traffic violations. Stricter provisions are being proposed in respect of offences like juvenile driving, drunken driving, driving without licence, dangerous driving, over-speeding, overloading etc. Stricter provisions for helmets have been introduced along with provisions for electronic detection of violations. Penalty regarding motor vehicles is to be increased by 10 % every year.. VEHICLE FITNESS The Bill mandates automated

fitness testing for vehicles. This would reduce corruption in the transport department while improving the road worthiness of the vehicle. Penalty has been provided for deliberate violation of safety/environmental regulations as well as body builders and spare part suppliers. The process for testing and certification for automobiles is proposed to be regulated more effectively. The testing agencies issuing automobile approvals have been brought under the ambit of the Act and standards will be set for motor vehicle testing institutes. The Bill also provides for compulsory recall of defective vehicles and power to examine irregularities of vehicle companies. RECALL OF VEHICLES The Bill allows the central government to order for recall of motor vehicles if a defect in the vehicle may cause damage to the environment, or the driver, or other road users. The manufacturer of the recalled vehicle will be required to: (i)

32 | MOTOWN INDIA | AUGUST 2019

reimburse the buyers for the full cost of the vehicle, or (ii) replace the defective vehicle with another vehicle with similar or better specifications. ROAD SAFETY BOARD The Bill provides for a National Road Safety Board, to be created by the central government through a notification. The Board will advise the central and state governments on all aspects of road safety and traffic management including standards of motor vehicles, registration and licensing of vehicles, standards for road safety, and promotion of new vehicle technology. PROTECTION OF GOOD SAMARITAN To help road accident victims, Good Samaritan guidelines have been incorporated in the Bill. The Bill defines a Good Samaritan as a person who renders emergency medical or nonmedical assistance to a victim at the scene of an accident, and provides rules to prevent

harassment of such a person. CASHLESS TREATMENT DURING GOLDEN HOUR The Bill provides for a scheme for cashless treatment of road accident victims during golden hour. THIRD PARTY INSURANCE The Bill has included the driver’s attendant in 3rd Party insurance. re will be no cap on liability of insurers. There will be a 10 time increase in insurance compensation, from Rs 50, 000 to Rs 5 lakh. Claim process has been simplified. Insurance firms have to pay claims within a month, if the victim’s family agree to accept Rs 5 lakh compensation. The Bill also increases the minimum compensation for hit and run cases from Rs 25,000 to two lakh rupees in case of death, and from Rs 12,500 to Rs 50,000 in case of grievous injury. MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT FUND The Bill requires the central government to constitute a

Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, to provide compulsory insurance cover to all road users in India. It will be utilised for: treatment of persons injured in road accidents as per the golden hour scheme, compensation to representatives of a person who died in a hit and run accident, compensation to a person grievously hurt in a hit and run accident, and compensation to any other persons as prescribed by the central government. This Fund will be credited through: payment of a nature notified by the central government, a grant or loan made by the central government, balance of the Solatium Fund (existing fund under the Act to provide compensation for hit and run accidents),or any other source as prescribed the central government. IMPROVING SERVICES USING E-GOVERNANCE Improving delivery of services to the stakeholders using e-Governance is one of the major focuses of this Bill. This includes PROVISION FOR ONLINE DRIVING LICENSES. The Bill provides for online Learners License with mandatory online identity verification Driving test will be computerized to avoid fake D.L. The Bill will bring transparency in RTO offices. Commercial licenses will be valid up to five instead of three years. Application for renewal can be made one year prior to or after license lapses. Driver Training Schools will be opened so that more efficient drivers may be available. PROCESS OF VEHICLE REGISTRATION To improve the registration process for new vehicles, registration at the end of the dealer is being enabled and

restrictions have been imposed on temporary registration. The Minister has however said that state transport departments can inspect the vehicles at dealers end. To bring harmony of the registration and licensing process, it is proposed to create National Register for Driving License and National Register for Vehicle registration through “Vahan” & “Sarathi” platforms. This will facilitate uniformity of the process across the country. DRIVERS TRAINING The driving training process has been strengthened enabling faster issuance of transport licenses. This will help in reducing the shortage of commercial drivers in the country. More and more drivers training schools and vehicle fitness centres will be opened To facilitate transport solutions for Divyang, the bottlenecks have been removed in respect of grant of driving licenses as well as alterations in the vehicles to make it fit for their use . REFORMS IN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM Development of integrated Transport System will be possible from the National Transportation Policy. This will also enhance the powers of the State Governments, provide better last mile connectivity, rural transport etc. TAXI AGGREGATORS: The Bill defines aggregators as digital intermediaries or market places which can be used by passengers to connect with a driver for transportation purposes (taxi services). The Bill provides guidelines for Aggregators. At present there are no rules in many states for

regulating aggregators, taxis etc. REFORMS IN DRIVING LICENSES The Bill provides for online Learners License. Provision of online identity verification Aadhar Card has been made mandatory for making Driving Licenses and driving test of the applicant will be computerized to avoid fake D.L. The Bill will bring transparency in RTO offices. Commercial licenses will be valid upto five instead of three years. Application for renewal can be made one year prior to or after licence lapses. Driver Training Schools will be opened so that more efficient driver may be available. SIMPLIFICATION IN THE PROCESS OF VEHICLE REGISTRATION The vehicle owners may register their vehicle anywhere in the state and process of registration will be done by dealers. Differently abled persons will get facilities for registration of vehicles. Checking of fitness of vehicles will be computerised and laws for scrapping of old vehicle. Now since the National Register is in place, transfer of vehicle from one city to another will be easier and the stolen vehicles will not get registered. NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION POLICY: The central government may develop a National Transportation Policy, in consultation with state governments. The Policy will: (i) establish a planning framework for road transport, (ii) develop a framework for grant of permits, and (iii) specify priorities for the transport system, among other things. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways and MSME thanked the Members of the House and said that this was a

matter of great happiness for him. He said the much needed amendments will improve road safety, facilitate citizens in their dealings with transport departments, strengthen rural transport, public transport and last mile connectivity through automation, computerization and online services. The Minister reiterated that the Bill would, in no way, encroach upon the powers and authorities of the states. He said the Bill would rather empower the states. He added that the Bill will provide an efficient, safe and corruption free transport system in the country. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019 is based on the recommendations of the Group of Transport Ministers (GoM) of States constituted by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways to address the issue of road safety and to improve the facilitation of the citizens while dealing with transport departments. The GoM was headed by Yoonus Khan, the then Transport Minister of Rajasthan, and had 18 State Transport Ministers from different political parties as members. On the basis of recommendations of the GoM and other pressing requirements, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways introduced the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016. This, along with amendments, was passed by Lok Sabha on 10th April, 2017. Govt issues draft notification allowing motor vehicles, parts to be affixed with microdots The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has issued a draft notification GSR 521(E) dated July 24, 2019, amending Central Motor Vehicle Rules, allowing motor vehicles and their parts, components, assemblies, sub-assemblies to be affixed with permanent and nearly invisible microdots that can be read physically with a microscope and identified with ultra violet light source. Microdot technology involves spraying the body and parts of the vehicle or any other machine with microscopic dots, which give a unique identification. Use of this technology will help check theft of vehicles and also use of fake spare parts. The microdots and adhesive will become permanent fixtures/affixationwhich cannot be removed without damaging the asset, that is the vehicle itself. The notification says that the microdots, if affixed, will have to comply with AIS 155 requirements. The Ministry has sought comments / objections on the draft notification within thirty days.

IT IS ALL IN THE DOT South Africa based Recoveri, manufacturer and exporter of technologically superior micro tag identification and trace solutions for vehicles and other movable domestic and corporate assets world -wide which plans to enter India with its Microdot technology , a highly effective form of vehicle marking and powerful theft deterrent has welcomed the MoRTH draft notification allowing affixing of Microdots on motor vehicles and their parts in its recent notification . MicroDot technology is a very effective form of Whole of Vehicle Marking. It involves spraying thousands of the small dots laser etched with a PIN (Personal Identification Number) number, linked to the Vehicle VIN Number. As the polymer dots are 1mm by 1mm it is impossible to locate and remove them all, so no matter how well it’s disguised, the car’s true identity can always be established.

“The technology is already used across the world as a way of identifying car engines and components. The microdot etched with a PIN number and other identification details are printed onto a microdot, which is then attached to the engine or component. Microdots contain an ultraviolet tracing agent that fluoresces under an ultraviolet or black light, allowing dots to be easily read with a magnifier, but are difficult to detect with the naked eye If the vehicle is stolen, the authorities can trace it quickly and effectively just by reading the information on the almost invisible dot without the need to resort to shining black lights or using complicated technological trickery. All they do need is a simple handheld UV Light and microscope,” said Sooraj Dhawan, India Representative, Recoveri, a leading South African MicroDot solution company. “The company plans to set up a state of the art manufacturing unit in India to meet the Indian requirements as well as open a Recoveri data center here linked with law enforcing and insurance companies in India . The company will also train police people in India with tracing system,” said Dhawan. “Once an asset is microdotted, the unique DNA is enacted, proving undisputed ownership. Each tag is linked to the Recoveri International database. The dots enable police to find missing vehicles and to identify parts that have been mixed and matched in a “chop shop”. All Recoveri micro dotted assets are logged onto a database and this information is used to track the rightful owner of an asset. With introduction of this technology car hijackers and thieves are in for hard times in future as Microdots are virtually impossible to remove which makes them one of the best vehicle security measures. Recoveri microdots

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com

can also be used on other assets also including laptops, mobiles, luggage, jewellery and expensive household items; the list is endless. They also help in making counterfeiting impossible” said Dhawan. “The dots are also noninvasive and, of course, pretty near invisible. The unique code they contain is linked to the vehicle and is stored on a secure database to which the security services alone have access. Police and other law enforcement agencies world-wide love microdots because the physical technology is low-tech (all you need is a microscope) and the dots themselves are as invisible as it is almost impossible to detect without a investigative kit. What’s more, once the dot has been read on the stolen or lost goods, tracing the owner is as simple as reading a database,” he added. In essence, “Recoveri Dot is used to discretely label assets in such a way as to be able to identify and trace ownership. The micro tags are mixed into a solution that is detectable under UV black light. With up to 15,000 coded micro tags deployed across both covert and overt areas of an asset, Recoveri provides a level of identification that makes theft and the resale of stolen property unviable to criminals and syndicates. The tags are impossible to remove without damaging the item, making resale difficult,” he further stated. Recoveri plans to set up authorised microdot fitment centres across India and they also come in small kits. Recoveri is also in talks with several car manufacturer’s in the country as the Indian government, through its highest automobile technical standard making body ‘Central motor Vehicle Rules -Technical Standard Committee (CMVR-TSC) set up by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has already framed the standards for auto industry to use microdots.

ACMA calls to avert looming crisis; Indian Auto components Industry grows 14.4pc Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), the apex body representing India’s Auto Component manufacturing industry, announced the findings of its Industry Performance Review for the fiscal 2018-19. The automotive component industry that contributes 2.3 per cent to India’s GDP, 25 per cent to its manufacturing GDP and provides employment to 50 lakh people, stood at Rs.3.95 lakh crore (USD 57 billion) for the period April 2018 to March 2019, registering a growth of 14.5 per cent over the previous year. Vinnie Mehta, Director General, ACMAsaid, “ The first-half of the fiscal 2018-19 witnessed a robust double digit growth. However, the second-half saw a significant slump in vehicles sales. The component industry, in tandem, posted a some-what subdued performance with growth of 14.5 per cent over the previous fiscal, registering a turnover of Rs.

3,95,902 crore (USD 57 billion). Auto Component exports grew by 17.1 per cent in FY 2018-19 to Rs.1,06,048 crore (USD 15.16 billion)”. Speaking on the need for urgent government intervention to kick-start a long-term growth cycle for the Auto and Auto Component industry, Ram Venkataramani, President, ACMA noted, “The automotive industry is facing an unprecedented slowdown. The vehicle sales in all segments have continued to plummet for the last several months. Considering the auto component industry grows on the back of the vehicle industry, a current 15 to 20 percent cut in vehicle production has led to a crisis like situation in the auto component sector. If the trend continues, an estimated ten-lakh people could be laid-off.” The subdued demand, recent investments made for transition from BSIV to BSVI, lack of a clarity on

policy for electrification of vehicles, especially for two and three wheelers, has left the industry unsure of its future and has caused it to stop all future investments. Ram further added, “The industry needs urgent Government intervention. There is an immediate need to stimulate vehicle demand and also sustain it post BSVI implementation, as vehicles will become significantly expensive thereafter. We strongly recommend that the government instates 18% GST rate across the entire auto and auto component sector.” On the need for a stable policy for electric mobility Ram said, “As we prepare for introduction of electric mobility in the country, the FAME 2 scheme and the associated Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP) are indeed welcome steps in this direction and will ensure a successful ‘Make in

India’ programme. Any further changes in targets for rollout of electric vehicles would increase India’s import bill and damage the current robust auto components manufacturing ecosystem. This will also result in significant job losses. Therefore, a stable, technology agnostic, e-mobility policy is the need of the hour to ensure a smooth transition and creation of a strong local supply base”.

Their company with brands FillNow & Synergy Green Diesel, are already popular in the industry. Prasan is an oil industry veteran and has more than a decade of experience in automation and on-site delivery of fuels. Prasan Surana said, “Non transport fuel consumers in India follow a traditional concept of purchasing fuel, where they buy

fuel in barrels and jerry cans from petroleum retail outlets and transport them unreliably to consumption points. Hence it becomes difficult for an owner to ascertain the quality and quantity of fuel delivered in his absence. During my tenure with one of the leading oil companies, I realised this need-gap and founded Synergy Teletech. We started our pilot project with our trademark brands in various areas and after successful operations, we are now launching our fuel delivery service, FillNow in Noida and NCR region. Our customers are only from B2B segment –MSMEs, Hotels, RWAs, Office Complex, Construction Sites, Telecom Towers etc. “All our deliveries are fully automated and every drop of fuel delivered by our refueller is

accounted for, so customers are billed only for what is delivered. Our professional service will protect consumers from a number of problems, such as oil spills, accidents, theft and pilferage, corruption and difficulty in the reconciliation of quality and quantity of fuel delivered.” Synergy Green Diesel is a

revolutionary distilled grade advanced Bio Diesel made from variety of feedstock, such as Tallow, Used Cooking Oil, Acid Oils, etc. It can be used in its pure form (B100) as a substitute of Regular Diesel in existing Diesel engines. A

n Eicher truck was always referred to as Mileage ka Badshah but now it is known as Business ka Badshah, or King of Business. This tag came after the Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles (VECV) launched the Pro 2000 series of trucks. Motown India visited the Pithampur plant of VECV in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and got to drive the latest from the Pro 2000 series, the Eicher Pro 2049 and the Eicher Pro 2095XP. Let’s check out why these trucks are called Business ka Badshah.

EICHER PRO 2049 Before we go any further, let me tell you about both the trucks. The smaller of the two, the Eicher Pro 2049 has a gross vehicle weight of 4995 kg. It has a cargo body length of 10.4 feet, a width of 6.1 feet and a wheelbase of 2580mm. The truck has a payload of 2697 kgs in FSD or Fixed Side Deck or half deck form. The vehicle is powered by a BS IV, E483 4 cylinder 2V CRS engine which delivers 95hp@2600 rpm and 300Nm of peak torque @1200-1800 rpm. This 3298cc diesel engine is mated to a five speed gear box. With a ground clearance of 160mm, the vehicle has a turning radius of 10 metres. It has a fuel tank capacity of 60 litres and comes with disc brakes on all four wheels. These are hydraulic brakes. Interestingly, the vehicle gets grease free semi elliptical leaves with anti roll bar in front and rear. Basically it also means that the suspension is grease free and now the truck owner does not have to grease any points and only after 150,000 kms or so does he have to change a few bushes that would cost him just a few hundred rupees. The Eicher Pro 2049 comes with 225/75 R16 tubeless radial tyres.

Once you step inside, you realise the interiors are new with an infotainment system, steering mounted controls and a lot of utility features. The steering wheel is tilt and telescopic manual steering vacuum assisted though power steering is optional. More of that later. This Eicher Pro 2049 comes with a one year unlimited kilometres warranty on the vehicle and

This truck too is powered by the same E483 4 cylinder CRS diesel engine. But here the power is more at 115hp@2600 rpm and the peak torque too is higher at 400Nm@13001500rpm. This Eicher Pro 2095XP gets a six-speed transmission. The turning circle for this model is 12.9metres and upwards and has a ground clearance of 195mm. The Eicher Pro 2095XP gets air brakes that are basically drum brakes with air assisted braking. The vehicle comes with 235/75 R17.5 tyres. The vehicle gets a 2 metre wide

The Eicher Pro 2095XP is the bigger of the two with a gross vehicle weight of 10,700kg. It comes in different cargo body lengths of 14.1 feet, 17.6 feet, 19 feet, 20 feet and 21.5 feet. Accordingly the cargo body width also changes to 6.6 feet for the 14.1 feet and 21.5 feet bodies and to 7 feet for the remaining three cargo bodies. The gear shift of the Pro 2049 is a lot smoother than the gear shift of the Pro 2095XP where I found slotting the reverse gear quite a tough job. But there is no denying the fact that these trucks are indeed Business ka Badshaah.

Full-hybrid vehicle with 48-volt high-power technology from Continental For years now, technology company Continental has been backing environmentally friendly and costeffective 48-volt electrification, which can be used with both gasoline and diesel engines. In the run-up to IAA 2019, Continental Powertrain is now presenting the latest innovation to come from its 48-volt drive solution: the 48-volt high-power drive system with 30 kW. A full-hybrid vehicle with 48-volt

technology – this was previously deemed impossible. For a hybrid vehicle to drive using just electricity, the electric part of the drive would normally use high voltage technology – high voltages of up to 800 volts. However, Continental’s engineers have now succeeded in developing a 48-volt hybrid system that boasts features similar to those of a high-voltage electric drive, namely 48-volt highpower technology.

“Thanks to its broad systems expertise, Continental Powertrain is mastering all variants of the electric drive, from 48-volt systems to hybrid technologies, right through to high-voltage components. We offer expertise and state-of-the-art technology from a single source,” said Andreas Wolf, CEO of Continental’s powertrain business. The new 48-volt high-power system, comprising an electric motor

TECHNOLOGY complete with integrated power electronics and a battery, reduces fuel consumption and thereby also CO2 emissions by around 20 percent compared with similar vehicles fitted with combustion engines. At the same time, the new 48-volt technology is also considerably cheaper than the high-voltage systems used up to now. “Our development objective was to achieve a level of driving efficiency with 48-volt technology that was previously reserved for high-voltage systems and we have now done exactly that,” said Stephan Rebhan, head of Technology & Innovation at Powertrain.

NEW STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT: FULL HYBRID WITHOUT A COMPLEX, HIGH-VOLTAGE SYSTEM The 48-volt systems were previously known as mild or P0 hybrids. They involve relatively unobtrusive electrification of the powertrain. Fuel consumption is reduced mainly with the support of the combustion engine (boosting) during acceleration and the recovery of excess kinetic energy (recuperation) when the vehicle decelerates. However, purely electric driving is not possible with such systems, which Continental already manufactures for a number of automotive manufacturers. In the latest stage of development, the 48-volt system was repositioned in the powertrain. The electric motor was no longer placed in front of the combustion engine on the crankshaft, but behind it – between the combustion engine and transmission (P2 hybrid). This meant that fuel savings were able to increase and, in certain situations, such as driving through a 30 km/h speed limit

electrical components are smaller and cheaper, and even the design can be made significantly more compact, because smaller gaps are required between the individual components than is the case with high-voltage technology.

zone, the vehicle could be driven using the electric motor alone. With the new 48-volt highpower technology, this hybrid system enables the same functionality as previous, full-hybrid vehicles. The key component here is a new, watercooled electric motor, the peak output of which was doubled to 30 kW in comparison with that used previously. Electric-only driving is therefore possible up to a speed range of 80 to 90 km/h. The developers were able to achieve a 100 percent increase in power while maintaining the diameter of the motor. Overall, 48-volt high-power technology requires only slightly more installation space than the previous system. The difference in weight is also minimal. However, the electric motor is not the only new component of the 48-volt high-power technology. The integrated power electronics also uses a new technology that now enables it to handle significantly higher

currents. The innovations of the new 48-volt high-power technology result in a level of electrical efficiency that surpasses the previous system by almost 10 percent. And during recuperation (the recovery of excess kinetic energy when the vehicle decelerates), the new technology is much more effective than was previously the case, because the losses incurred in the electric drive system has been halved. The 48-volt high-power technology therefore provides all the benefits of a conventional, full-hybrid vehicle with a highvoltage system – significantly lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as optimized driving efficiency and drivability. There is also another argument in favor of the new hybrid solution from Continental, which is its relatively low cost. This is the key to making cheap hybrid vehicles available and achieving high market penetration. The reason for this is that a 48-volt system requires considerably less effort in terms of insulation protection,

Continental is showcasing the new 48-volt high-power technology, which is also ready for series development, in a Ford Focus test vehicle. “With the new hybrid system, we are making the most of what is currently technologically possible for a 48-volt system,” said Stephan Rebhan. With the 48-volt high-power technology, Continental is playing a leading role in terms of performance, power density and efficiency. Full hybridization is made possible – all without the effort and costs involved in a high-voltage system.

EVEN A 48-VOLT PLUG-IN HYBRID DRIVE WOULD BE POSSIBLE With an eye on the new approval regulations that have been in force since September 1, 2018, in accordance with the WLTP cycle, the 48-volt high-power technology could be developed even further. If, for instance, the system was supplemented by on-board charging technology and a larger battery, this would make even a plug-in hybrid drive featuring 48-volt technology possible. This is because the ability to drive in all-electric mode is no longer the main criterion for benefiting from the support for plug-in vehicles. Instead, it is the conversion of electrically stored energy into traction in general. The deciding factor for different funding initiatives is whether CO2 emissions can be reduced to below 50 g per kilometer.

TECHNOLOGY

Hyundai Motor Group unveils world’s first CVVD engine technology Hyundai Motor Group has developed the world’s first Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology to feature in future Hyundai and Kia vehicles. The innovation was revealed at Hyundai Motor studio Goyang alongside the Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi the first engine to feature the technology. CVVD optimises both engine performance and fuel efficiency while also being eco-friendly. The valve control technology regulates the duration of valve opening and closing according to driving conditions, achieving a 4% boost in performance and a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the technology cuts emissions by 12%. “The development of the CVVD technology is a good example how Hyundai Motor Group is strengthening our powertrain technology,” said Albert Biermann, President and Head of Research and Development Division at Hyundai Motor Group. “We will continue our innovation efforts to bring forth paradigm shifts and ensure sustainability of our business model,” he added.

INNOVATION: CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE VALVE DURATION Until now, an internal combustion engine performance and efficiency have been governed by variable valve control technology that adjusts the timing of valve opening and closing and depth of the valve’s opening, with engine power produced through the fuel intake-compression-expansionexhaustion cycle. Typical variable valve control

technologies manage the timing of the valve’s opening and closing (as in Continuously Variable Valve Timing - CVVT) or control the volume of air admitted by adjusting the depth of the opening (Continuously Variable Valve Lift - CVVL). Previous variable valve control technologies could not regulate valve duration, as the valve’s closing timing was subordinate to opening timing and could not respond to diverse driving situations. CVVD takes the technology in a new direction by adjusting how long a valve is open. When the vehicle is maintaining a constant speed and requires low engine output, CVVD opens the intake valve

from the middle to end of the compression stroke. This helps to improve fuel efficiency by reducing the resistance caused by compression. On the other hand, when engine output is high, such as when the car is driving at a high speed, the intake valve is closed at the beginning of the compression stroke to maximize the amount of air used for the explosion, enhancing torque to improve acceleration.

SMARTSTREAM G1.6 T-GDI ENGINE Unveiled alongside the new CVVD technology is the new Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi Engine, a V4 gasoline turbo unit with 180 horsepower and 27.0kgm of torque. The new powertrain

The exhaust gas recirculation system returns some of the gas burnt by the engine to the combustion chamber, producing a cooling effect and reducing the emission of nitrogen oxides. The G1.6 T-GDi also features a low-pressure system that redirects the burnt emission gas to the front of the turbocharger compressor, rather than the intake system, to increase efficiency under the high load condition. Additionally, the new unit has an Integrated Thermal Management System that quickly heats or cools the engine to an optimal temperature, and a strong direct spray system that achieves 350bar, surpassing the 250bar of the previous T-GDi engine. In addition, engine friction is reduced by 34% with the application of low friction moving parts.
