P. THARYAN s winter creeps its way into the smoggy capital city of New Delhi and as North India gets ready for a winter season, and as the entire country lives in the pain of a demonetisation that went horribly wrong (at least in the first 20 odd days), there is

despair and hope all mixed in a rather terrible concoction. But that does not mean there is gloom everywhere. Nico Rosberg of Mercedes won his maiden Formula One title in the 2016 season after racing his heart out in more than 206 Grands Prix in the past. Isn’t that a lesson for all of us? To never give up because some day you shall wear the glittering crown! At Motown India we continue to review new products as they come our way. This issue contains the drive reviews of the Hyundai Tucson, the Toyota Fortuner, the new Fiat Linea, the Aprilia SR150 and the TVS Jupiter MillionR edition. While we write about these cars and bikes in our magazine, we are also creating top class videos that are uploaded on the Motown India channel on youtube. Incidentally, among all the English auto magazines in the country we are ranked No.3 in terms of subscriber base and viewers. Mind you, it’s been an organic growth all along. This December 2016 issue also contains an OEM Performance Special wherein we have shortlisted 12 best products in the two-wheeler and fourwheeler passenger vehicle segment of the country. The 12 are the best of the lot that was launched during 2016. We ranked these vehicles based on several parameters. In the B2B section we have a report on the Busworld India event that was held in Bangalore. Interestingly, we are also the first auto publication to take the new products from the Volvo Buses stable, the 9400 series 12 metre and 14.5 metres buses, for a short drive on the testing tracks of the company’s Hoskote plant in Karnataka. This apart, we have the regular new launch reports and a clutch of B2B reports.

hey say one needs to strike when the iron is hot. The Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment in the country is currently growing

the fastest in the passenger car market and like all car makers Hyundai too is stepping up its act. They already have a Creta in the SUV space which has become a big hit among Indians.

16 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2016

They also have a Santa Fe, but that that’s bit out of reach for ordinary mortals, costing in and around Rs.30 lakh plus. Now the company has introduced the Tucson (pronounced Too Saw).

It comes in the premium SUV segment, but at a lower price band. It’s a smart move on the part of the company. The all new Hyundai Tucson comes with two engine options:

Nu 2.0 litre petrol and R 2.0 litre diesel. While the petrol is based on a dual VTVT engine technology, the diesel is based on an e-VGT engine technology. Both these models also have a further option of a manual as well as an automatic version. Of the two, the diesel model is more powerful as it churns out roughly 182.5hp @ 4000 rpm and a maximum torque of 400Nm in the rpm band of 1750 to 2750. The petrol mill

produces only about 153 hp @ 6200rpm and a peak torque of 192Nm @ 4000 rpm. We got our hands on the diesel automatic top end variant and took it for a short spin in and around Chandigarh. First and foremost, the all new Hyundai Tucson is a perfect fit between the Creta and Santa Fe. Obviously, there is an audience out there keen for premium products but not ready to pay as high as Rs 30 plus

lakh for it. The first generation Tucson, if one remembers, came into India around 2005, then vanished after five years or so. The second generation Tucson never made it to India and finally we have the 3rd generation Tucson. Its timing into India could not have been more appropriate. Like so many SUVs already present in the country, the Tucson too is smart looking. But it scores high on the

exterior styling front, be it those hexagonal grille, the dual barrel LED headlamps, fog lamps with LED DRL, etc. Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design is very evident on the Tucson. Further, the chrome door handles with pocket lighting, chrome finish belt line, the R 18 diamond cut alloy wheels, and twin chrome exhausts peeping out from the rear bottom, the roof rails, the shark fin antenna and the sporty spoiler with LED stop lamps

make the Tucson a good looking vehicle. The vehicle is made of 51pc advance high strength steel, thereby ensuring that you are safe in the vehicle while driving. The good looks on the outside simply extend their character inside in the form of premium fit and finish inside. The two tone beige and back combination with leather seats and leather wrapped steering wheel exude chic class. Apart from enough storage spaces and generous leg room both in front and rear, there are these chrome tip controls on door armrests. Like in all premium cars, this one too has leather console arm rest with storage. Interestingly the middle seat in the rear comes with a three point safety belt which is not very common among cars in this segment

The dual zone climate control, with cluster ionizer (this keeps the car environment clean), rear AC vents, a luggage screen for the boot area, auto folding ORVMs, compass on inside rear view mirror, smart key and push button, etc makes the Tucson a lot premium in its offerings. The vehicle also comes with a smart infotainment system, a 4+2 speaker

entertainment system, Apple car play as well as Android auto connectivity, smart HD audio video navigation with voice recognition and steering mounted audio and Bluetooth controls. Driving the car on the highways of Chandigarh revealed the brute side of the car when it came to power. The diesel mill churned out

tremendous torque and power, with the turbo kicking in around the 2000 rpm range. There are two drive modes, one ECO and the other Sport which change the dynamics of the car to a great extent while driving. The NVH levels are very good in this car and it handled well in some of the hilly terrains of the region. Ride and handling too scores high on this vehicle.

In short, the all new Hyundai Tucson scores high on several fronts, be it looks, performance and comfort. For all those who need to rough it out with this premium SUV, they need to wait a bit more‌a 4 wheel drive Tucson is just round the corner. But then it would have to tweak its ground clearance too which is currently at 172mm!

he Toyota Fortuner was launched back in 2009 and it was an instant hit with the masses. Its behemoth proportions and bold stance was nothing short of legend. But after witnessing mild updates and tweaks over the years, it lost steam and the company faced massive competition from the likes of Ford’s new Endeavor and other compact options which offered class and finesse. Toyota, however, is not a brand to sit by idling and just like a revenant they brought back the Fortuner, adorned in a shiny new armor, to reclaim all its

lost glory and the crown that made it king. The new Toyota Fortuner sports a very sleek design language, with crisp and clear lines defining its silhouette. If you were a fan of the old variant, then the new one will catch you off guard. It is nothing like the old variant, except maybe in proportions which are marginally similar. The façade sports angular headlamps sitting besides the bold chrome grille, giving this SUV a very imposing look. In the rear it is almost the same story, with wrap around tail lamps and ample of chrome adoring the boot. The new Fortuner is sleek from every

angle and that disguises its bulky proportions rather well. The head lamp cluster features Bi-Beam LED and projector lights while the tail lamps get LED Light Guides and Aero Fins. On the inside, the cabin is rather plush with exquisite materials adorning every corner of this luxurious SUV. The colour tones blend well with the overall design theme to give customers a premium and contemporary feeling. Soft touch materials have been used generously all over the cabin and the dash gets a healthy dose of piano black finish. The new Fortuner offers features such as a

The new Toyota Fortuner gets a 2.7 litre, VVTi, 4 cylinder, in-line petrol engine and a 2.8 litre, GD, 4 cylinder, in-line diesel engine. The petrol motor puts out 163.6hp at 5200rpm and 245Nm of torque at 4000rpm, while the

diesel manual transmission option puts out 174.5hp at 3400rpm and 420Nm of torque from 1600 to 2400rpm.

Both engines are similar to the ones found on the Innova Crysta. The 2.8L diesel has been re-tuned to put out more torque. The 2.8 diesel which is also available with a 6-speed automatic transmission puts out more torque than the manual, with torque figures standing at 450Nm from 1600-2400rpm. The petrol motor is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automatic with sequential shift, paddle shifters and shiftlock. The diesel mill is available with a 6-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) and a 6-speed automatic. To drive, the petrol motor is very smooth as it provides a gradual climb up the power band. It is an ideal motor for city driving conditions and caters

A DRIVING EXPERIENCE

to almost seamless up-shifts. Despite the peak power coming in at 5200rpm the petrol version of the Fortuner is quick through its paces and one can really stretch out its legs on highways. The diesel caters to a more peppy drive and can really throw you back in your seat. The turbo on the diesel kicks in rather quick and the surge of power is enough to get you going. The gear shifts on the manual transmission are crisp and easy to slot, with decent throws of the gear leaver catering to a comfortable driving experience. The Fortuner also comes with Eco and Power drive modes along with an option for cruise control. The driver gets a high point of view along with a good, clear line of sight, thus

24 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2016

driving this mammoth SUV is rather easy. Unlike the previous version, the new Fortuner gets ventilated discs on all four wheels. The brakes do lack a bit of feel, but they get the job done very well and inspire confidence during emergency situations. The new Fortuner also gets a Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) with Brake Assist (BA), along with features like Hill Assist Control and Downhill Assist Control as well as an Active Traction management system. The suspension setup is mildly stiff and soaks in most of the shocks from bumps and potholes with ease. The Fortuner also gets bounce and pitch control which caters for a more comfortable journey. The SUV rides on wide 265/65

R17 (2WD) and 265/60 R18 (4WD) tyres for enhanced grip and stability, making cornering and driving on winding roads a real treat. The various driver aides which have been incorporated into the Fortuner assist in various on and off road functions as well as ensuring safety of the occupants. The SUV also gets ABS with EBD, 7 Airbags, Child Restrain ISOFIX mounts among other safety features, making the Fortuner a league ahead. The Fortuner is priced at Rs. 25.92 lakh. It offers volumes of space and just the right amount of features. Its capability as a true blue SUV is immense and Toyota has armed the Fortuner in the right proportions to reclaim its crown.

was handed over the keys to a Fiat Linea 125-S on a rather quiet Wednesday afternoon. At the time, I never fathomed that a quaint looking sedan could change what seemed to be an extremely long day into an incredibly thrilling one. As I stepped into the sun and looked up in a hope to see clouds, my gaze fell upon her, while she lay baking in the scorching heat. The twist of a key brought her 1.4 litre, turbocharged, 4 cylinder petrol motor to life and only then did I realise what lay in store for the remainder of my day. The Linea 125-S is not a sports car, but it has the fastest petrol motor amongst all the c-segment sedans in the Indian market. To put things into perspective her 1.4 litre, turbocharged, 4 cylinder motor puts out a neat 123.2bhp at 5000rpm. Thanks to a turbo, the motor is extremely peppy and nothing feels linear about her motion. The engine churns out a healthy 208Nm of torque at 3500rpm but none of these figures can do justice to how aggressive this sedan feels. Once you slot in the first gear and floor the accelerator pedal, the world begins to blur out as you are thrown back into your seat. The Linea 125-S is quick through the first three gears but on highways one can really stretch out her legs and cruise at

healthy speeds, over taking literally feels like a breeze. On the inside as well, the cabin feels spacious and the warm colour tones are quite welcoming. The overall design theme on the inside does feel a tad bit dated but exceptional build quality as well as the use of fine materials can easily compensate. The Linea 125-S also gets plenty of features like bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity as well as a touch screen infotainment setup with navigation. The Linea also gets electrically adjustable ORVMs but they are not electrically retractable. The steering also has controls for the infotainment system and a lever for cruise control. Rear passenger comfort is also quite good with provisions for a rear AC vent and a centre arm rest as well. In the cabin, passenger comfort is quite good, the seats are comfortable and provide adequate support. The vehicles ride and handling dynamics also contribute to a smooth ride. The Linea rides on an independent wheel suspension setup in the front and a torsion beam in the rear. The suspension is on the softer

side, it gobbles up bad roads with ease and even while driving at speeds in excess of 130kmph, the vehicle feels planted to the road. To facilitate confident driving, Fiat has also installed a complete disc brake setup on the Linea 125-S. With all four wheels running discs, the vehicles braking performance is exceptional. The brakes, however, lack feel. That being said, one must understand that this does not in any way affect the vehicles braking performance. In panic braking situations the vehicle can come to a halt in a matter of seconds, which is rather good, when compared to some segment leaders. The Linea 125-S gets a ground clearance of 190mm which is extremely useful, especially considering the bad roads one faces in our country. The vehicle can easily clear undulations and is rather good when tackling

A DRIVING EXPERIENCE

poorly designed speed breakers. The steering on the Linea 125-S weighs up well, even at high speeds the mildest of inputs are accurate and one gets a very confident driving experience. The steering also provides just the right amount of feedback from the wheels and is a real pleasure to drive. The Linea 125-S delivers a fuel efficiency of 1314kmpl in the city, which is quite decent and gets a fuel tank of 45 litres giving the sedan a range of over 600kms. The Linea does come with right bells and whistles one desires in a vehicle of its category. But then it does feel dated in terms of interior design and styling. But when it comes to drivability the Linea 125-S is unmatched by all

its petrol rivals and that makes it one of the strongest contenders in the category. While the Linea 125-S is a tad bit pricey and will set you back by Rs. 11.78 lakh (on-road Delhi), it does appeal to a petrol head who craves undiluted performance and power.

A RIDING EXPERIENCE APRILIA SR 150

Little Big Things Report: Aakash S Paul; Photography: Afsar Baig

I

will be very honest here; when it comes to two-wheelers I have always preferred bikes over scooters. It is not that I don’t like scooters, I think they are very practical, handy and easy to drive. They can be a bit boring, but bikes on the other hand are full of fun and well they have that inherent ‘macho-ness’. However, all that changed the moment I mounted this seemingly slim and petite looking scooter called SR 150. Yes it had the Aprilia branding and I was expecting a different kind of performance than other scooters we have in the market but boy did the scooter perform on a completely different level! The 150cc engine in the SR 150 is all about ferociousness. With max power of 10.4hp and max torque of 11.4Nm coming at relatively lower rpm levels this one is in the true sense a ‘pocketsized powerhouse’. Be it carving corners, be it long stretches of highway or be it congested city roads, this scooter performs with grace and ease. It is literally the best example of ‘best of both worlds’. You get the power of a 150cc bike coupled with the ease of a gearless scooter. The slender figure of the SR 150 makes it a great vehicle to zip through traffic. The SR 150 eats speeds of 50-70kmph for breakfast! I did manage to push the speedo needle a little beyond the 100kmph mark on a long and empty stretch of tarmac. Somewhere close to 80kmph you feel SPECIFICATIONS

like the SR 150 is at its peak but can still go faster. While the official figures state that this scooter has a mileage of 53kmpl, real world figures might drop to almost 40-45kmpl. The front 220mm disc brake is precise and has enough bite to let you control this vehicle. The rear drum brakes also performed similarly. The large 14 inch tyres are one of the best parts about the SR 150 (engine being the best part). You get plenty of traction and confidence when you lean into a corner like a pro! Potholes can be a bit of an issue due to the suspension setup being stiff. This is expected however and forgiven as the telescopic forks upfront and unit swing in the rear do a decent job. After all who would buy a Lambo and complain that it has a low ground clearance? At 160mm, the ground clearance of the SR 150 however is pretty good. The slim figure allows for some great aerodynamics but also means that there are some compromises on the comfort front. The footboard can feel a little short for people with heights of 6 feet and above. The seat however, is adequately broad and long. The cushion is comfortable as well. Under the seat you get a modest amount of storage space and the provision to add a charging port. There are no pockets up front but you do get a single bag hook. If there ever was a Justice League made of scooters then the black and red colour variant of the SR 150 we had would definitely be the Batman amongst them. With sharp lines and curves running all along the scooter and the Aprilia graphics, this one is a mean looking little scooter. One would expect a very tech heavy meter console on this scooter but what you get instead is a simple analogue speedometer. You do get a dial that shows you the fuel level but a trip meter is nowhere to be found. This all-analogue meter is admittedly is a bit of a let-down but the overall build quality is very good and all the controls are within reach. One thing is for sure, the Aprilia SR 150 is not your everyday commuter scooter that has loads of features and convenience. This is for those who just want mad performance without the hassle of gears or for enthusiasts that wanted the boasting rights of owning an Aprilia but were on a budget. This is Aprilia’s most budget friendly offering in the country but by no means is it devoid of the Aprilia DNA that we all have witnessed in their high end bikes. With a 150cc engine and a price tag of Rs 67,395 (ex-showroom Delhi), the SR 150 really has no direct competition. But then in cities like Delhi, the company would have to increase its number of dealerships to reach out to the people.

TVS JUPITER MILLIONR EDITION

One In A Million Report: Aakash S Paul ; Photography: Afsar Baig

L

et me take you back in time to 2013. It was the year when TVS Motor Company decided to set foot in the male scooter segment. To make a mark in the already crowded market they needed a larger than life product and thus the people of India were introduced to Jupiter. Jumping back to present day (2016) we have a proof of the success that Jupiter brought for TVS, a sales figure of 1 million units in just 3 years! To celebrate the occasion TVS has introduced the MillionR edition for the Jupiter. We recently got our hands on it and discovered what is new in this one in a million scooter. The most striking changes would be the cosmetic ones. You get a new glossy Royal Wine colour scheme which is complemented by beige panels and floor mat along with a dual tone seat. Addition of chrome on the back of the rear view mirrors over the Jupiter logo further sell this as a premium looking scooty. A new MillionR Edition emblem on the front panel and a MillionR Edition keyring are also present to further stress on how exclusive this edition is. For me the selling point of the Jupiter has always been the features that it offers. You get a parking brake which can be very handy in case you want to park on inclines or uneven surfaces. There is an Econometer which shows you whether you are in Eco or Power mode and you also have a fuel gauge along with a low fuel indicator. Speaking of fuel, the company claims an average of 62kmpl which in real world conditions would come down to about 5055kmpl. You also get TVS’ patented E-Z centre stand that allows you to put the Jupiter on the centre stand with almost zero effort. While the 17 litres of underseat storage might it be the best in class, it does come with a provision to charge your mobile. Driving at night

is made even more easy and safe with the twin pilot lamps in the front and rear LED tail-lights. Drifting from the common tradition you get external fuel fill. While you do not have to open the seat while refueling, you still have to get off the scooty as the lock to open the lid is situated on the left side panel. This feature would have made more sense if there was a provision to open the fuel lid from the front. Now let’s get to the performance aspect of the Jupiter. It is still powered by the same 109cc, 4-stroke, single cylinder engine and puts out 7.9hp at 7500rpm and 8Nm of torque at 5000rpm. These figures straightaway point towards a great performance on city roads. You get good acceleration right off the bat which only declines a little, somewhere close to the 60kmph mark. They key change on the performance side comes in the face of a 220mm front disk brake. The rear still gets a 130mm drum brake. The two brakes provide quite the

opposite experience. While the front disc is quite powerful and can bring you to a halt in a few seconds, the rear brake is very progressive. We did wish that the rear brake shared the same enthusiasm as the front. The 90/90 12 inch tyres provide a good grip under most circumstances but if you take corners at high speeds then you might feel the rear end slip just a little. The Jupiter gets advanced telescopic suspension in the front and a gas charged mono shock suspension in the rear. This soft suspension setup is in fact my favorite in this segment. Also the 150mm ground clearance means that you don’t have to worry about most of the speedbrakers. Just like the planet Jupiter, the TVS Jupiter is big when it comes to features and convenience. The MillionR edition only couples these features and performance with stunning looks. All this comes at Rs 53,034 (ex-showroom Delhi) and if you ask us then it is quite a fair deal.

SPECIAL REPORT OEM PERFORMANCE SPECIAL

Top 12 of 2016

I

n 2016 there were several launches in the two-wheeler and four-wheeler passenger vehicles space. We saw monkey bikes hit Indian roads once more, behemoth pickup trucks being launched, iconic American muscle car tearing up the asphalt in India and uber luxurious SUVs paving the way forward for this industry. As the year draws to an end we line up the best of what has been launched in the Indian automotive market so far. We brought it down to the basics - design, performance, price, practicality and features, to evaluate the Top 12 vehicles, be it cars or bikes, launched in 2016. Each received stars on the basis of design, performance, price, practicality and features. More stars meant a better rating for the product. The results are as follows....

#12 YAMAHA CYGNUS RAY ZR India is one of the largest markets for two wheelers in the world. Its two-wheeler market is fierce and the competition is cut throat. Only the best of the best survive and one such product launched this year is the Yamaha Cygnus Ray ZR. The bold and chiseled design up front on the Ray ZR lends it an intimidating look. The separated headlamp and turn indicators give a pronounced design to the front. There is also an increased distance between the front fender and the mud guard to give it a sportier and motorbike like appeal. The scooter features bold and stylish designs on the side as well. Although the rear of the Ray ZR looks good but when compared to the front and the side it looks a little simple and therein lies its beauty. Yamaha has not gone overboard and has given this two-wheeler just the right amount of bling to make it a sure shot head turner. The Ray ZR has a 113cc, single cylinder engine which puts out 7.2hp at 7500rpm and 8.1Nm of torque at 5000rpm. While these figures might not sound too exciting, they get the job done rather well and cater to a very pleasant commute. Cruising around the city is relaxing and this scooty will be used mostly for that. Even on highways it provides a good and stable ride. The Ray ZR also returns a fuel efficiency of 66kmpl. It also comes with disc brakes up front which are very efficient and inspire confidence in the rider. The Ray ZR offers volumes of comfort and convenience in its category of products, it comes with a saddle long enough for two

people to sit comfortably and the foot board also provides enough space for tall people to sit with ample of space. Under the seat you get 21 litres of storage space apart from two cubby holes up front. The drum variant of the Cygnus Ray ZR is priced at Rs 52,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) and the disc brake variant comes at for Rs 54,500. The Ray ZR offers a rich mix of good performance, design, practicality and features, all at a reasonable price point.

#10 TVS APACHE RTR 200 4V We got our hands on this one a little late but none the less were thoroughly impressed with it. Yes it may not be a big deal to some but the Apache already has a cult following which is steadily growing day by day. This neat little bike packs quite a powerful punch when it comes to city riding. Its low end torque provides good pickup when in heavy traffic but the mid range is where the fun begins. Its sporty nature and aggressive design philosophy can surely put a spring in your step. But what makes this bike so special? The TVS Apache RTR 200 4V offers fuel injection, an oil cooled engine, optional Pirelli tyres and ABS. It may not sound much to racing aficionados but give the same specs to a college going kid about to buy his first bike and

4V can achieve a top speed of 129kmph which is quite decent for highways and cities. The bike is rather quick to a 100kmph and also returns a good 35kms to the litre. Our jurors were more than

impressed with the bike’s performance in terms of braking, safety, ride and handling, acceleration and overall fit and finish. The design of the Apache 200 also lends insight into the bigger bikes to come from

the stables of TVS. The bike incorporates all right elements to make this one of the most affordable (Rs. 1.07 lakh exshowroom Delhi) and thrilling entry level naked sport bikes to hit the market.

#09 HONDA NAVI This one is by far one of our favorites, infact we are so fond of the Navi we went and bought it after the launch earlier this year. The Navi in its own right is one of the most unique offerings in the Indian two wheeler market. It does not really go supersonic because it was never meant to do that, rather it is meant to appease the masses with its design and simplicity. In terms of design this little monkey bike is a sure shot head turner. It’s unique design and dimensions are striking, leaving on lookers in bewildered amazement. Since India is a country of volumes the Navi fits in snug, it comes in at one of the most reasonable price tags we have seen and is a very youth oriented product. But why this when there are so many others to chose from? Well for starters, its offbeat! Manufacturers at times get stuck in a rut and most end up making a me too product! But the Navi represents a bold move on behalf of Honda Two Wheelers. The sporty and unique design of the Navi makes it a head turner. In terms of performance this monkey bike is robust and dutiful. It comes with a 109cc, 4-stroke, single cylinder engine which has been mated to a v-matic transmission. The Navi can reach a top speed of approximately 81kmph and returns close to 60kmpl. It does miss out on some important features like a fuel level indicator but then again we have no complaints as Honda is not really charging a bomb for it. This monkey bike however can be customised to a great extent at dealerships and that makes it all the more fun to own as it makes the product very personalised. Honda is offering all of this at a price point of Rs. 43,084 (On-road Delhi) which in our books is truly a unique and wholesome offering. The Navi is deceivingly quick and very easy to navigate through crowded streets.

#08 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID As each day passes, the world around us is getting smarter and taking technology to the next level. Honda has been pioneering such products for ages and this year they launched the new Accord Hybrid which is a testament to their commitment to the future of automotive technology. The Accord features hybrid technology which implements the Atkinson cycle. To drive the Honda Accord is a real treat, it glides over surfaces gracefully and has fairy like aura no matter where it goes.

The Atkinson cycle engine is far different from what James Atkinson developed in 1882. Back then it was a complicated mechanical system in use but today with loads of electronics and software, the same purpose is met---to keep the engine valve open longer while the piston is in action so as to ensure increase in the cylinder’s displacement. It’s ideal for a hybrid engine. This old technology has been given a modern alteration like in this Accord where the electric motor helps to overcome the Atkinson’s

shortcomings on the power front without compromising on fuel efficiency. The Accord in many ways carries the spirit of a revolutionary and has set a bench mark for automotive technology to come. The executive sedan also features different drive modes for different driving conditions. It comes with plenty of features to enhance the users comfort and convenience, like the remote engine start feature which can enable you to power up your engine and cool the

car’s cabin much before you board it. Every corner of the Accord speaks volumes about practicality and ingenuity. The vehicle has features like a simply push button ignition to smart entry and power adjusted driver and co-driver seats, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers and much more. While the design profiles are simple, Honda has implemented a complete LED setup in the head lamp cluster and rear combination lamps to give the sedan an exclusive look.

had created. It has the looks, it has the power and is definitely one product to look out for if you are planning on picking up a vehicle in this market.

The 150cc engine in the SR 150 is all about ferociousness. Be it carving corners, be it long stretches of highway or be it congested city roads, the SR 150 performs with grace and ease. You get the raw power of a 150cc bike coupled with the ease of a gearless scooter. The front 220mm disc brake is precise and has enough bite to let you control this vehicle. The rear drum

brakes also perform admirably to cater for a very confident ride. While design and branding of the SR 150 is highly appealing, what makes this two-wheeler so unique is the fact that it is one of a kind and has no competitor. While the commuter class has been overloaded with 110-125cc scooters the SR 150 has immense power and performance to top its rivals. The scooter also gets a USB charging slot, a bag hoot and under seat storage as well. With a 150cc engine and a price tag of Rs 67,395 (exshowroom Delhi), the SR 150 really has no direct competition and a very wholesome offering indeed.

#06 TOYOTA INNOVA CRYSTA Over the years the Innova has garnered a frenzied following amongst Indians as an icon of family mobility. It has a special place in our hearts as well, the old Innova spoke volumes about what an MPV should be like and in many ways was a bench mark for the industry. When the new Innova Crysta made its way to

www.motownindia.com

Indian roads, one could not help but assume that it would out do its previous version, the real question was by what margin. Well to begin with the Crysta defines an entirely new level, when it comes to comfort and luxury. It provides adequate seating options for seven adults and has a ton load of handy

features. The Crysta also has a very boxy design which was rather appealing to us, it is out and out an MPV but from certain angles resembles an SUV. The sharp and crisp lines running seamlessly from front to back ensure this MPV stands out and is far from ever being a me too product. In terms of design

it incorporates all the require aspects and features, the best of what the market is offering today. What really stole the show, was the engines being offered by Toyota on the new Innova Crysta. Due to a diesel ban which was implemented late last year, Toyota incorporated a new 2.7 litre, 4 cylinder petrol motor for the Crysta. They are also offering the Crysta with a 2.8 litre and a 2.4 litre diesel mill. Both diesels and the petrol motor offer an extremely thrilling drive, while the petrol is more linear and gradual, ideal for city traffic, the 2.8 litre diesel is extremely punchy. If you floor the throttle on the 2.8L diesel, an almost instant surge will push you back in your seat and on highways the Crysta is a delight to drive. If you are planning to pick up an MPV, the Crysta is the top performer without a doubt. India is still a very price

DECEMBER 2016 | MOTOWN INDIA | 35

SPECIAL REPORT sensitive market, however that has not affected Toyota, their Innova Crysta does come with a steep price tag, which stands at Rs. 13.96 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base variant and it goes up to 20.93 lakh (exshowroom) for the top end 2.8L diesel. Other options are more affordable however, they do leave scope for massive improvement

when compared with the Crysta, which beats them in terms of space, comfort, utility, performance and features. When comparing all that one gets on the Innova Crysta it is good value for money, but we would have liked a more affordable price tag. While looking at every aspect of the vehicle, practicality is one area which can easily

be over looked. However the Motown team believes everyday functionality is something which is of prime importance. Here ergonomics, ease of operation of features, feature list and convenience among other aspects has been gauged. Toyota has this area covered rather well on the Crysta. Its ergonomics and functionality is impeccable and

the practical usage of features on a day to day basis is the best in its segment. For example, having a glove box is important but a cooled glove box is equally useful, however you wouldn’t want everything in your glovebox cooled. So Toyota built in a separate chiller unit right above the glove box which makes a world of difference.

#05 FORD ENDEAVOUR Big and Brawny, that is what an SUV is meant to be! and in our opinion, no one has done it better than Ford. They launched the Endeavour in a brand new Avtar which ensured the SUV maintained the essence of the old one, yet gave the new one an extreme make over all round. Its Titanic like proportions ensures an unmistakable road presence

and sets you apart from a compacting world. Ford has also incorporated ample of style and technology elements which equips the Endeavour with all the right bells and whistles today’s buyer desires. While the Endeavour gets the right proportions, Ford has also updated the mechanicals to give this true blue SUV all the

capability required to conquer any terrain. All it takes is the simple turn of a knob to change driving modes for varied surfaces like sand, snow, rocky, etc. It’s 3.2 litre diesel mill churns out a blistering 470Nm of torque and 197.2bhp to power this SUV through the most extreme of terrain and makes cruising on highways a walk in the park. Apart from the terrain management program on the Endeavour, Ford has also packed in

a stability management system, traction control, hill launch and descent control among a host of other safety features. On the inside as well, the SUV boasts of a feature packed and luxurious cabin. The materials used and combination of colour tones ensures a rich mix of sophistication and elegance. The Endeavour is one SUV which should not be overlooked if you are planning a purchase in this space. It’s an all-rounder and does not fail to impress, what you do need to concern yourself with is the price tag which stands to set you back by Rs. 29.77 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the top end variant. That said, this SUV is a great example of value for money and in our opinion will be an extremely satisfying buy.

#04 TATA TIAGO When Tata began bringing out products like the Zest and Bolt, we all knew their masterpiece was not far off! The Tiago in its mere existence is a resounding roar of what this company is capable of achieving. While there are more affordable options in the market, the Tiago offers a lot more at just a little more cost. This compact hatchback offers buyers a features, design and performance all at a price tag which is just too tempting to say no! Right from its honeycomb front grille to the angled headlamps and sharp tail lamps, the Tiago makes for a very attractive first car. Its smooth flowing lines and chiseled design makes one look on in ardor. Even inside the cabin, the quality of materials, fit/ finish and build quality seem to be quite good. The ride feels extremely solid and planted making it quite enjoyable on highways and busy city streets. The hatch is offered

with a 1.2 litre petrol and a 1.05 litre diesel. Both motors have their advantages, while the petrol is smooth and linear, the diesel feels quite peppy. The petrol motor is more powerful and feels a lot more refined than the diesel. The Tiago also offers customers the option of switching to an Eco Mode for more fuel efficient driving, quite a handy option to have in bumper

to bumper traffic. The 1.2 litre petrol returns almost 23kms to the litre while the diesel touches close to 27kmpl. The car also comes with ABS, dual airbags, parking sensors, electrically operated ORVMs, a Harmon sound system with navigation, bluetooth, USB and AUX inputs,

follow me home headlamps and steering mounted controls. In our terms the Tiago is a very good example of practicality, because it offers everything one would desire in a first car be it performance, features, design or the price which stands at Rs. 3.2 lakh (ex-showroom Gurgaon).

#03 HYUNDAI ELANTRA The Hyundai Elantra was a late entrant to our list and most of the favorites were already chosen. This executive sedan was launched late in August this year and when were done evaluating it the score card blew our minds. The Elantra was amongst the top 3 on our list, so we retraced to see what really made it such a great bet. To begin with we look back at our first impressions when we got to

drive the sedan in Chennai. While the outgoing model was more curvy and fluidic, this new Elantra spoke volumes of Hyundai’s ever evolving design philosophy and brought to the table looks which can rival some German and Swedish sedans. While big German brands have been synonymous with good looks, luxury and quality, there have only been a handful of car makers who dare to break that

stereotype. Most often than not these bold automakers end up failing miserably when pitching their products as premium offerings. Hyundai however has not failed and by the looks of their work, it would seem that they are quite close to cracking a bolt into the premium German locker room. The new Elantra may not be as fluidic in its design as the old one, but it has very subtle curves which give it ample

of class and finesse. Even on the inside, the cabin feels swanky and rich, with a fine blend of exquisite materials adorning every crevice. The new Hyundai Elantra offers premium looks and is definitely a head turner, but what made it to the top three on our list was the fact that it was an all rounder. Not only does the Elantra offer good looks but also offers great build quality,

SPECIAL REPORT features, fit and finish. The Elantra also now has a new 2.0 litre petrol engine which puts out 150bhp and 192.2Nm of torque. The engine is smooth and powerful the peak power lies high up in the band at 6400rpm and the climb up that mark is quite linear. The Elantra is also definitely fun to drive, one of the major improvements is that the steering is much more precise to inputs and the suspension feels more taut unlike the previous model, giving it a very sporty

driving experience. On the features and practicality front this sedan offers a lot, it comes packed to the brim with features like, ventilated seats, dual zone climate control, 10-way power adjusted driver seat, rear AC vents, cooled glove box, 8.0 inch touch screen infotainment setup, movement sensing boot unlock, voice recognition and cruise control to name a few important ones. The list of features is rather large and most

of these are extremely useful in day to day activities. But the pricing could have been more competitive! The top end petrol variant costs Rs. 18 lakh (ex-

showroom Delhi) and comes packed to the brim with practical and handy features that can be used in day to day life.

TOTAL SCORE 42 / 50 Amongst all the luxury car manufacturers operating in India, Volvo has been defining its own path and setting benchmarks in the industry with their unique and uber luxurious offerings. They recently launched their XC 90 Excellence which is their range topping SUV. It incorporates radar based safety features for the first time in India. This includes collision warning with full auto braking, large animal and cyclist detection, rear collision warning as well as park assist.

But safety is not all that is offered on the XC 90 Excellence. What makes it even more special is the fact that this is a plug-in Hybrid SUV with a total power output of 407bhp. The XC 90 Excellence can run almost 40kms on just electric charge and the batteries take approximately 2.5hrs to charge.

38 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2016

The bulky SUV can touch a top speed of 230kmph and does a 0-100kmph in just 5.6 seconds. The 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder petrol mill is turbocharged and supercharged, thus making it extremely quick and agile despite its mammoth dimensions. Volvo has come up with very striking designs on its products

of late and the XC 90 is no exception to that. It can stand out easily in a crowded German convoy and makes a very bold impression on road. It has crystal clear lines which define the silhouette and give the SUV a brawny yet elegant shape. The XC 90 gets unique LED DRLs upfront which can be identified from a distance. The real joy of this SUV however is on the inside where the cabin is extremely plush and exquisite. The second row features almost everything you would find on a first class seat in a aero plane and top of the line technology has been seamlessly blended in for the best comfort being offered in the market. The XC 90 Excellence comes in at a price point of Rs. 1.25 crore (exshowroom Delhi), it is rather steep, but then again it is not another run of the mill product either.

MARUTI SUZUKI VITARA BREZZA Over the last few years, many compact SUVs have hit the market. Amongst the lot was Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza which was launched early in 2016. It has a very bold and boxy design with subtle lines giving it a definite SUV like shape and appeal. The Brezza is one product which stands testament to the evolution of the auto industry in India. Like the Duster and the Eco Sport after it, the Brezza took the market by storm. Maruti also got their pricing bang on and the entire package offered on the Brezza is quite wholesome. FLYING HIGH! NICO ROSBERG CROWNED 2016 F1 CHAMPION

f late, Formula One races have been quite boring because it’s always Lewis Hamilton winning and the Silver Arrows dominating the podium. But in 2016, the race was stretched to the last mile, into the final race and despite the Mercedes dominance, a new winner emerged-Nico Rosberg. Rosberg won the F1 title for 2016 after contesting 206 Grands Prix in the past. Thus, after 21 races in the 2016 Formula One season and a neck and neck fight with teammate Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes Benz driver Nico Rosberg won the 2016 F1 championship title, despite coming in second in the final race at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. At the end of it, the points were in favour of Rosberg. In the process of winning the F1 title for 2016, this being his first, he emulated father Keke. After his maiden win, Rosberg is now the Silver Arrows’ third world champion, after Lewis Hamilton and Juan Manuel Fangio and as for the location, this was the third time in history that the title for F1 championship has been settled in Abu Dhabi. Before the final round of the season 21st, only 12 points separated Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton for the 2016 title. It was a tense 2016 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as less than two seconds covered the top four at the chequered flag. Third to come in was Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari followed by Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing. Daniel Ricciardo followed his Red Bull team mate home, with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen taking sixth ahead of Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez. Williams’ Felipe Massa and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso completed the top ten. Rosberg, in the meantime was all set to celebrate with his father Keke and mother Sina. Rosberg and his wife Vivian too hugged after the race as this was the greatest day of his racing career. As the race ended, Rosberg took permission on the radio for doing donuts on the track and when the answer was yes he went ahead and delighted the thousands thronged at the race circuit. “Thank you so much guys, that’s a childhood dream come true,” he screamed over the radio. With this victory, Nico Rosberg became the 33rd driver to win a Formula One world championship crown and is only the third German to win an F1 title. Other German winners have been Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. The three now account for 12 of the last 24 drivers’ championships, with of course, Schumacher dominating in numbers. Nico’s father Keke Rosberg won his championship for Finland. Germany now have three F1 world champions, Brazil too has three (Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna) and so does Finland (Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen and Kimi Raikkonen).

Podium and maiden pole position for Mahindra Racing in Marrakesh Formula E Mahindra Racing collected a second consecutive podium and scored its first ever pole position for the inaugural Marrakesh ePrix, the second round of the 2016-17 FIA Formula E Championship. Swede Felix Rosenqvist, in just his second Formula E race, finished third during the series’ visit to Africa after leading the race from pole for an impressive 27 laps. The 2.971km semi-permanent street circuit, the longest in Formula E history, put pressure on energy management for the entire field. Meanwhile, reigning Formula E champion Sebastien Buemi’s perfect start to his title defence continued in Marrakesh, with victory in the series’ first visit to Africa. Rosenqvist’s pole lap was the first ever (in Formula E) for Mahindra Racing and further underlines the team’s all

new season three powertrain development for the M3Electro. The 25-year-old lies fourth in the Drivers’ Championship on 19 points (coincidently, the same as his race number). In the number 23 cars, the team’s German driver Nick Heidfeld, who claimed a podium in the season opener in Hong Kong, qualified in 11th position. Some early jostling from the race start hampered his advancement through the field but he ultimately recovered to ninth place. The combined drivers’ results have elevated Mahindra Racing to joint second in the Teams’ Championship. One of the final ‘firsts’ for the team, a race win, will have to wait until 2017 when the FIA Formula E Championship continues with the Buenos Aires ePrix on February 18.

Yamaha’s Lorenzo wins in Valencia MotoGP It was the 250th Grand Prix start for Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo who said goodbye to that title in stunning style, as the Spaniard held off a late charge from reigning World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) to claim the crown in Valencia, Spain MotoGP duel. Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) took P3 on the podium Iannone was the one who initially led in number two as Maverick Viñales (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) joined him in the battle behind the lead, after the number 93 suffered a bad start off the line. After getting past Viñales, Rossi and Iannone fought it out at the head of the second group as the number 99 began to disappear

into the distance, with Marquez and the number 25 in close company. As Rossi got to the head of the chasers, Iannone hit back again – and so began Round 2. The podium decider was left to a brutal, classic battle between Iannone and Rossi - with the rider from Tavullia seeming to have got the better of his younger compatriot, until Iannone hit back with an aggressive move that also gave him a gap he was able to hold onto over the line. Viñales completed his final weekend with Suzuki in P5. Dovizioso eventually dropped slightly back from the front group into the clutches of Aleix Espargaro (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and brother Pol (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) to fight for P6 after grip issues - with the younger brother Pol finally taking the honours

42 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2016

over the line in a photo-finish against Dovizioso, and Aleix seeing the flag in eighth. Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) unfortunately suffered a crash to bid adieu to his fantastic latter half of 2016 – but he takes the title of Top Independent rider although bettered by Pol Espargaro on the day. Crutchlow’s compatriot Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) had another impressive ride as he gets back to fitness following a crash ahead of

the British GP and two knee surgeries, taking P9 in his final race with Tech 3 before he moves to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. Source: www.motogp.com

Andreas Mikkelsen victory in Australia as Volkswagen bows out of FIA WRC Andreas Mikkelsen won the WRC Australia on November 20, 2016 as Volkswagen bowed out of the FIA World Rally Championship with a 1-2 finish. He won despite a tough fight posed by his team-mate and world champion Sébastien Ogier, who spun away his victory chances on the dusty Bucca speed test early morning. Mikkelsen achieved his third career win by 14.9sec over his Polo R colleague.

Mikkelsen and Ogier delivered a perfect finale to four years of WRC domination by the German manufacturer. It was the team’s 43rd win from 52 rallies and came after a tough battle in the sweltering and dusty New South Wales forests near Coffs Harbour. Mikkelsen started the day under heavy pressure with a slim 2.0 sec advantage over Ogier. The Frenchman reduced it to just three-tenths midway through the

long Bucca stage before spinning and allowing Mikkelsen to ease through the final three tests. Hayden Paddon had an outside chance of victory in third but his i20 swiped a bank and knocked the rear left tyre off the rim. The time loss promoted Thierry Neuville onto the podium. Victory by Andreas Mikkelsen/ Anders Jæger in the Polo R WRC’s 52nd rally was both spectacular and hard-fought – and featured a close battle with Volkswagen team-mates

Sébastien Ogier/ Julien Ingrassia , who celebrated four titles in the Driver’s and Co-Drivers’ Championship with the world rally car from Wolfsburg. The French pair also won the Manufacturers’ Championship four times with fellow Volkswagen duo JariMatti Latvala/Miikka Anttila . The final hurrah down under developed into a real thriller, in which Mikkelsen/Jæger held his nerve to come out on top thanks to a magnificent performance. After four years at the top of the pinnacle of rallying, Volkswagen has now bid farewell to the most prestigious automobile world championship outside Formula 1 with an impressive record.

BOSSMAN

Speaks V.R.V. SRIPRASAD

Managing Director, Volvo Buses, South Asia Report : P. THARYAN Volvo has sold more than 6000 buses in India since you started operations in 2001. Are you satisfied with the progress your company has made? Many of the times your success should not be and cannot be measured in numbers alone. I think we are immensely pleased in our journey in the last 15 years as to what we have achieved in terms of our concept selling, in terms of changing mindsets and in terms of introducing modernisation to this country as far as passenger transportation goes. We pioneered many concepts on safety, on luxury, etc and on all those counts we have had a very successful journey. Of course we are never going to be happy on numbers, we could have done better. Your company has now launched two new buses, one, a 12 metre long bus and the other a 14.5 metre long bus. How are they different from your existing products? This new coach range we are launching in the Busworld 2016 is different from the earlier ones because these are Euro IV compliant which comes in effect from April 1.

They have newer engines than what we had earlier. We have worked on both the vehicles for delivering better value for customers. We have looked at enhancing fuel efficiency in both the vehicles. That is going to be different as well as beneficial to the customer. On the aftermarket side, we have looked at maintenance costs coming down significantly. We are also introducing a lot of new features in these buses, many of which are part of the standard specifications in Europe. Some of them are safety related while some of them are performance related. The styling too is different. Volvo has also introduced two hybrid buses in India, what’s been the feedback on that? What about electric vehicles? We sold our first two hybrids, in fact the first two hybrids in the country ever for any manufacturer, to Navi Mumbai. The buses have been in operation from June and the performance and fuel efficiency of these have been extremely encouraging. There has been a reduction of fuel consumption by almost 33pc. Besides that, we have been very encouraged by the

feedback of the passengers who said it’s noiseless and without pollution. Slowly as we develop and mature as a society, this is what is going to make a difference. As the population becomes more and more environment conscious, it will support such changes. From Volvo perspective, we already have electric buses in piloting in Europe. We have it plying in the cities of Stockholm and Gothenburg. They are turning out to be a phenomenal success there. This is a new technology and we will take our time perfecting it and learning it, before we go into commercial sale. In Europe too, we are a year away from commercial launch. What makes these vehicles tick, is it just a customer being driven towards it or has there to be a lot of hand holding with the Government? Public transport globally has always been supported and subsidised by governments because it serves a larger purpose of city mobility and keeping the city as a better place to live. Otherwise the roads will be flooded with personal vehicles if you

do not have good public transport. In every developed country where there are smart cities, the governments have invested in public transport or smart transportation. But in terms of adapting and making it a success, we have other stake holders who are the city corporations who run the buses, and the traveling public who have to make the switch from the personal vehicle to the public transport vehicle. With competition increasing in the commercial bus segment, how do you perceive the growth of Volvo Buses? I am very happy that competition is coming. For 15 years we have been a lone soldier furrowing in this country, doing missionary sort of work, trying to do conversion of customers from basic vehicles to modern Volvo buses. We are happy that now we have somebody who will work with us and share our work there. Our market potential is extremely large there and it can take on many players. emember the days of yore when bus rides were a trip to hell in India? While we blamed potholed roads for those uncomfortable back breaking journeys, we never really blamed the obsolete technology that went with the buses of those days. Nobody

really knew that buses in India were built on truck chassis, with engines mounted in the front, with both sound and fury and smoke and heat, all dissipating within the passenger cabin, sending many of the passengers into bouts of nausea and sickness. All that changed when

Swedish truck and bus maker Volvo came into India at the turn of the 21st century. People in India then realised that travelling in a bus meant a journey to heaven. For the first time Indian bus rides were undertaken in buses built on bus chassis which gave as much comfort as travelling in your favourite

sedans. Not only passengers were happy with their rides, but drivers too were pleasantly surprised with the ease at which the buses handled and the incredible steering response generated while driving the buses. Thus, when Volvo Buses invited us to drive two of their

mammoth luxury coaches that were launched recently, we readily agreed. The test was conducted at a track within their plant in Hoskote in Karnataka. I drove the 12 metre 8 litre vehicle first. The engine was mated to a 6 speed synchromesh manual transmission. Except for getting used to its size, there was almost nothing that was different from an ordinary sedan. It offered power steering, adjustable steering

wheel, and a whole host of controls that aided driving and braking well. All one had to get used to was how to corner the vehicle, which ultimately proved easy thanks to those massive outside rear view mirrors. Driving on a straight road was as easy as pedalling a bicycle in a park. The same went for the 14.5 metre bus which was powered by an 11 litre diesel engine. This engine was mated to an I-shift 12 speed automatic transmission. And driving an automatic bus was as effortless and easy. Here one had to be a tad more careful because of its massive length. But power steering coupled with features like hill start aid, EBS and ESP, it matched the ease provided by a sedan.

After driving a couple of times around the track, I certainly felt as though I have been driving buses all my life. To prove that the company is ahead of the curve in terms of technology, one must keep in mind that the engines powering these buses are Euro V emission ready and these are built in India along with Euro VI engines at the VECV Pithampur plant and exported to the outside world. Since India does not have norms for Euro V engines, these very same engines are being certified for BS IV norms! While driving these luxury coaches was rather effortless, it was the interiors which offered a slew of comfort features. Reclining and cushioned seats offer top notch seating comfort for the passengers. Features like your own charging points next to your seats for your mobiles and other gizmos come quite handy in long distance travelling. The 14.5 metre bus even has a small chemical toilet for passengers. I particularly did not like its location as it was built somewhere in the middle of the bus. This could inconvenience passengers seated close to the toilet. Ideally this should have been situated at the rear of the bus, away from where the passengers were seated. The long bus also has a small pantry area with a coffee maker attached. Long journey in such a bus would definitely be a treat. But what makes these new Volvo buses a lot more endearing is

64 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2016

that fact they are very safe. From the luggage area to the engine compartments, Volvo has fitted sensors that can detect fire, smoke and rising temperatures. In case of fire or smoke, fire extinguishers get activated, preventing any mishap. Volvo has also ensured several escape routes for passengers in case of any kind of mishap, by providing hammers, foldable ladders etc. Many of its large window panes comes with emergency buttons which when pressed during crisis can shatter the tempered glass, ensuring that you can escape through these large windows. There is no denying the fact that Volvo has established a benchmark in the bus segment in terms of quality, safety, passenger comfort, features and driving ease, ever since they have started doing business in India. With the introduction of these two new buses, the 14.5 metre one and the 12 metre one, Volvo Buses benchmark has gone a notch higher. As for my overall experience with these two mammoth vehicles from Volvo Buses, I must admit I had a whale of time!

Bosch’s new motorcycle ABS 10 goes into production with Kawasaki and Suzuki Following the introduction of the Bosch motorcycle ABS 10 in 2015, the Kawasaki Versys-X 300 ABS will be launched globally as the world’s first production model to be fitted with this system. Furthermore, the 2018 model of the Suzuki GSX-S125 ABS will also feature the system. Although nearly 30 percent lighter and 45 percent smaller than the current ABS 9, ABS 10 still has all the highlevel standard features and functions of its predecessor. This makes the system especially suitable for the small two-wheelers that are particularly popular in emerging markets. By 2021, approximately 160 million two-wheelers will be produced annually, roughly onethird more than today. Nearly 90 percent of these will be built in China, India, and Southeast Asia. “Bosch has designed and launched motorcycle ABS 10 with the aim of bringing this key safety technology to all vehicle classes and markets,” says Geoff Liersch, head of the Bosch Two-Wheeler and Powersports business unit. Worldwide, an increasing number of countries are mandating motorcycle ABS. In the European Union, motorcycle ABS legislation has been enacted, and will applied from the beginning of 2017 to all newly registered vehicles with an engine displacement over 125 cc. Similar legislation will also apply in Japan and India from 2018, and in Taiwan from 2019. Brazil plans to mandate ABS for all existing vehicle types with an engine displacement over 300 cc, with legislation being enacted between 2016 and 2019. Motorcycle ABS is also on the political agenda in the United States, Australia, and Ecuador.
