nother year is coming to an end and in this December 2017 issue we are carrying some interesting reviews, besides a comparison among three leading C-segment cars—the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. We have compared these cars on several parameters that included comfort,
features, performance, design and price. Though one car has emerged as the winner, it does not mean the other two are in any way inferior. In fact, all the cars offer high levels of sophistication and are doing remarkably well in the market. In the review section, we have driven the soon to be launched Lexus NX300h, the allnew Land Rover Discovery and the Jaguar F-Pace. We have also ridden the new scooter Grazia from the stables of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India. For our two-wheeler enthusiasts, we are carrying an exhaustive report on the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. Several of the leading global motorcycle brands had displayed some of their new motorcycles at the show. From India, the notable entries were Hero MotoCorp and Royal Enfield. We also attended the two-day India Bike Week in Goa. The B2B section is also full of news from the corporate and technology worlds. Many of the reports carried in the magazine also have their YouTube footage and those interested in watching them can go to the Motown India and Motown India Corporate channels on YouTube. Last but not the least, we have bifurcated our B2C and B2B contents in the internet space by introducing a new website by the name of Motown India Corporate (www. micorporate.com). Our existing website www.motownindia.com will now be exclusively carrying B2C news, while the former will carry auto industry news along with interviews with leading CEOs and senior management of auto companies.

INDIA BIKE WEEK 2017
THE FACE OF INDIAN BIKING Report: Joshua David Luther Photography: Afsar Baig
I
was sitting in a cafe, sipping on my latte on a fine November evening. The street was empty and the sun had begun its decent from the skies above. All seemed peaceful and quiet until I heard a rumble in the distance. Just like that of a hound, my ears were up and my eyes keenly searched the horizon. The roar grew louder and louder. The riders had begun pouring in from all parts of the country. One, two, three or four. The cylinder count did not matter, they were all part of a brotherhood of bikers, pouring in to be part of the biggest biking festival of year - India Bike Week (IBW) 2017. I had arrived in Goa a day prior and was relaxing at a cafe waiting on the spectacle to begin. In its fifth iteration, India Bike Week 2017 was organised on November 24 & 25 at the Vagator Hill Top in Goa. This year’s event was graced by the likes of the fastest woman biker alive Leslie Porterfield and motorcycle racing legend Freddie Spencer. Aside from these legends many other notable personalities made an appearance. India Bike Week 2017 also played host to manufacturers like Triumph, Indian Motorcycle, BMW Motorrad, UML, Harley Davidson and Avantura Choppers.
culture in India is just beginning to take shape and India Bike Week has become the one-stop festival of the year that most bikers look forward to. “I think IBW has given a face to the biking community in India” said Dr. Amanda Gomez (a female biker) in conversation with this correspondent. She was one among many women riders at this year’s IBW. But the ride is just one bit of it all. There were many attractions including music by Apache Indian, Mojojojo, Colt Silvers, DJ Savyo, Jack Jigg, Lagori and G2 Live. This year’s festival also witnessed multiple bike parades and introductions by 30 biking clubs. As has become custom, the IBW Honour Roll posthumously recognised M. R. among many such as Neel Jagtap, Trichakra Riders and Vinod Rawat to speak to an audience about their biking journeys at the Big Trip Stage. IBW also became a platform for manufacturers to launch new products in front of a large biking audience. Triumph motorcycles was the first amongst the lot and launched their Speedmaster bobber styled

Honda’s Marc Marquez wins second straight MotoGP riders title

Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda RC213V secured his second consecutive Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) MotoGP World Championship riders title at the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix (Spain). This gave Honda the team title, and with the constructors title already won, Honda has achieved the triple crown in 2017. On November 11, Marquez had secured his 8th pole of the season, setting him up in the best possible way for the final race the next day. From the beginning of the race, he was consistently fighting aggressively for the lead. From mid-race, Marquez opted to maintain his position, and finished on the podium in third place to seal his championship victory. Team-mate Dani Pedrosa won the race, contributing to the team’s success in winning the team title. Marquez debuted in the MotoGP class in 2013 from Honda’s factory team, Repsol Honda Team, and became the youngest rider to win the championship. The following year was just as successful, with Marquez winning 13 grands prix including 10 straight wins, to become the champion for the second year in a row. With his fourth title this year, Marquez becomes the youngest MotoGP premier class rider to win the championship four times. Honda also earned a back-to-back constructors title, and with Repsol Honda Team taking the team title, Honda has achieved its first triple crown since 2014. “I pushed hard from the beginning to control the race, so I could win here in Valencia and secure my 4th championship title, but made a mistake at Turn 1 after overtaking Johann [Zarco, Yamaha]. I felt it was risky to keep on fighting him, so I concentrated on finishing the race. That’s when Andrea [Dovizioso, Ducati] retired and I realized I won the championship. The first half of the season was physically and mentally tough. I didn’t felt comfortable in the first few rounds, but thanks to the team’s efforts, I started to have fun in the following races. Today’s race was just amazing! It only really sunk in that I became champion when I returned to the parc ferme with my team!,” said an elated Marquez.

In spite of team mate Lewis Hamilton snapping at his heels for a good part of the race, Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes continued with his lead to win the 2017 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the last race of the season, making it a 1-2 for Mercedes. Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari could only manage a distant third for his team. Vettel was followed by his teammate Kimi Raikkonen, while Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing came in fifth. His teammate Daniel Ricciardo retired earlier in the race on lap 21 having experienced hydraulic problems. Force India drivers again found themselves in the first ten, with Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon coming in 7th and 8th. Nico Hulkenberg of Renault was sixth, with McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Williams’ Felipe Massa completing the top ten.
KTM Rally Factory Racing Team set sights on Dakar 2018 The Red Bull KTM Rally Factory Racing team is entering the final stages of their preparations ahead of the 2018 Dakar Rally – the 40th edition of the event, which will be staged from January 6 to 20, 2018 in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Competing on the all-new KTM 450 Rally, the official four-rider line-up of Sam Sunderland, Toby Price, Mathias Walkner and Antoine Meo are currently all busy training hard ahead of the gruelling annual event. Following an intense year of racing, training and preparation, the Red Bull KTM team is now all but ready to begin their individual quests to claim KTM’s 17th consecutive Dakar bike class victory, and take on the challenge of the longest and toughest event on the crosscountry rallies calendar. After two years of development and a rally win on its first competitive outing, the all-new KTM 450 Rally is also ready to face the challenge of the 2018 Dakar. Officially launched at the recent EICMA show in Milan, resplendent in its Red Bull livery, the bike boasts many performance improvements over last year’s The official four-rider line-up of Red model. A new engine and
management system gives the riders more accurate throttle response, a new chassis and swingarm provides sharper handling and newly designed fuel tanks and bodywork ensure the bike feels slimmer and is more manoeuvrable. Proudly displaying the number one plate on the new KTM 450 Rally, Sam Sunderland will return to the Dakar as defending champion. The British rider’s fight for the 2017 FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship went right down to the final round where unfortunately he was forced to retire after picking up a small injury on the second day. Now fully fit and confident of a good result in South America, Sam will be fighting to repeat his success of 2017.

LIKE NO LEXUS NX 300H
Report: Joshua David Luther Photography: Afsar Baig
W
hile most car manufacturers stick to the safe zone when it comes to designs, Lexus seems to have chosen a very radical path when it comes to styling of their vehicles. A case in point is the new Lexus NX 300h.
EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES Drop dead gorgeous! That is what the new
22 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2017
NX 300h is. Essentially a hybrid crossover SUV, the NX sports a very peculiar design unlike any other yet distinctly shaped Lexus. The angular front with sharp headlamps and a separated section for horizontal L shaped LED DRLs sets a fresh tone. I can’t call this one contemporary but much rather I would say its way ahead of its time. Something common on the NX 300h is the signature spindle grille design which is distinctly Lexus.
The Japanese luxury brand is offering the NX 300h in two variants -- Luxury and F-Sport. Both get a unique pattern for the spindle grille. While the Luxury variant sports horizontal slats, the F-Sport gets a woven pattern rendering an almost 3D like impression. Sitting smack in the middle of the grille is the Lexus logo. A few brushed aluminum bits around the grille and front skirting finish up a futuristic looking facade.

#LEXUSNX300H
OTHER From the sides, the SUV looks butch with protruding wheel arches surrounded by black plastic cladding. Adding to the unique design is the gently curving shoulder line which seamlessly emerges out after the A Pillar and dissolves into the C Pillar. The NX 300h rides on 225/60 R18 tyres which are proportionate to the SUVs size. Encased in the tyres are sleek looking 5 twin fin alloys with a machined and blacked out finish. Another feature which adds to the NX 300h’s style quotient is the massive fixed panoramic sunroof. The rear section of the NX 300h is as edgy as the front with a tapering roofline ending abruptly in a spoiler on the tailgate. The L shaped stop lights in the tail lamps add a touch of symmetry to the theme of the NX 300h. The rear of the SUV sports a rather boxy look with smooth edges. Ample plastic cladding has been used on the lower sections of the

bumper with brushed aluminum bits here and there.
INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The theme inside the cabin is equally futuristic and looks more like the cockpit of a luxury jet. Stepping inside, there is a rich blend between technology and earthy materials giving the NX 300h a very unique look. Adding to this distinct appeal is the fixed panoramic sunroof which ensures an extremely open and airy feeling inside the cabin. The seating is plush with leather upholstery and ventilated seats. The dash and doors feature leather and wooden trims that blend well to create a plush feeling inside the cabin. The layout of the dash is ergonomic with most switches and buttons well within reach of the driver. The Lexus NX 300h also gets a

host of features that add a lot to the comfort and convenience this SUV has to offer. Lexus is offering a 10.3 inch infotainment display and to operate this is a touch pad on the centre floor console. Now I do admit this does make it convenient to operate but decreases the ease of operation of the infotainment unit.

Lexus is offering power adjusted seats which can be operated not only from the seats but also by the driver as well as from the boot. Other features include a Heads-Up Display, kick sensors to release the tailgate, wireless phone charging, voice recognition, push button start/ stop and keyless entry. A mention must also be made about the simply amazing 14 speakers Mark Levinson unit which comes with impeccable clarity.
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE Powering the NX 300h is a 2.5 litre, 4 cylinder unit which has been mated to an e-CVT transmission. The hybrid SUV also gets two electric motors. The one powering the front wheels produces 140hp and 270Nm of torque while the motor powering the rear wheels produces 67hp and 139Nm of torque. Being mated to an e-CVT transmission the Lexus NX 300h is rather smooth and essentially that is what it has been designed to be. On many occasions while I was ambling around the city traffic in Goa, I noticed how smooth the NX 300h was to drive and when it came to swift overtakes there was ample power.
24 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2017
The engines power peaks at 5700rpm which lies high up in the band while peak torque kicks in above 4000rpm. The performance is linear and smooth. Lexus has also provided an option to drive in EV mode where the only source of power is the 204 NiMH battery cells in the NX 300h. When driving in electric mode the SUV is nearly silent and the ICE only jumps in on the driver’s demand for more power. There is no great lag when power is demanded with the ICE taking charge in the blink of an eye. At cruising speeds this hybrid SUV it takes the juice from the batteries. Lexus has also added the provision of different drive modes. One can choose
between Eco, Normal, Sport and Sport+. When it comes to flat out performance the ICE engine combined with the electric motors do a fine job but in all honesty it is not very thrilling but much rather silent and elegant in its approach. The company has claimed a 0-100kmph time of 9.2 seconds. However, in our runs we were able to best that with the NX 300h clocking a time of 7.92 seconds in Eco mode. In Sport mode the SUV reached 100kmph from scratch in a matter of 7.76 seconds while in Sport+ we were able to clock a time of 7.69 seconds. The braking performance of the NX 300h is also exception with the SUV coming to standstill from 100kmph in a matter of 6.61 seconds.
VERDICT The Lexus NX 300h is quite unlike any other competitor. It has the right bells and whistles to set it apart from a herd and definitely makes a statement where ever it goes. It is not a car that will give you an adrenaline rush but does pack enough performance to fare well against competition.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES It’s the inside of the all-new Discovery that really turns you on. Even before you step behind the wheels of a Land Rover vehicle, you can bet your last buck that it’s as capable as you can imagine. But what is it from the inside? It’s an SUV with space like crazy. Yes, this is what makes the all-new Discovery so awesome, because it is not just good on and off the road but it can seat seven adults in full comfort. I hopped on from the driver’s seat to the second row and then to the third row, and I almost could not believe the comfort the seats offered. No other passenger vehicle in my memory offers so much comfort for so many people and yet drives like an SUV and is an SUV and offers the most unimaginable levels of driveability. In fact, I would say the USP of this all-new Discovery is the seating space that has been created within the cabin with its umpteen permutations and combinations. It’s truly amazing. I shall not delve too much on the large infotainment touchscreen, the good use of materials like premium leather, wood and metal finishers. The electrically adjustable steering for rake and reach, the touch screen functions for anything from navigation to audio (controls the 380W Meridian sound system with ten speakers and a dual channel subwoofer) to seat adjustments, USB ports

and charging points, etc all of this makes the vehicle a lot upmarket. As for its practical side, it’s the seats that evoke a sense of accomplishment. Apart from the fact that all the seven plush seats can seat fully grown tall adults, it’s the several ways that you can adjust these seats with the touch of a button in the luggage load area or with the touch of your finger on the touchscreen that makes the vehicle unique.
It’s like a magic act in progress. You can fold the second row and third row seats or you can fold them separately or you can unfold them, it’s the best electronics can offer. I was truly impressed by these several seat combinations. The best
www.motownindia.com
#ALLNEWLANDROVERDISCOVERY
part is that the system understands when the seats are occupied or have heavy items on them and when folding automatically adjusts their positions to prevent any kind of conflict. If seating is a great plus point in this car, so is the storage spaces built into this vehicle. For a modern family with its obvious demand for electronic items like tablets and mobile phones, there is plenty of storage for these items. There is space in the upper and lower glove box, central armrest stowage with an optional chiller compartment and space for multiple tablets, space in the door bins to accommodate 1 litre bottles in front and 0.5 litre bottles in the second row, etc.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Like a Discovery has always been, this one too comes with a lot of magic to its performance. The 3 litre petrol engine is more than capable to carry the load of seven adults and their luggage through some of the toughest terrains on the global map. While at its launch in Mumbai I experienced the capabilities of the vehicle on some very exciting man made hurdles, I got an opportunity to rough it out on a terrible,
www.motownindia.com
uneven track in New Delhi. There is no denying the fact that the Discovery Terrain Response System optimises the vehicle performance on different terrains. With the twist of a rotary knob you can select General Driving, Sand, Rock Crawl, Mud & Ruts and Grass, Gravel, Snow---That kind of sorts out everything for you in some tough drive situations. Other standard features include Hill Descent Control, Coupled with a permanent four-wheel drive system and an electronic air suspension, driving is a lot more comfortable in the all-new Discovery. The electronic air suspension comes every handy when you come across some very tough terrains. With buttons on the console you can automatically lower the ride height by 40mm when the vehicle is parked. Also by using switches in the loadspace or on the key fob one can lower the rear ride height and this comes handy when loading or unloading luggage. While wading through some tough city traffic, I obviously felt that the vehicle was a bit too bulky, but I was not complaining because with a stop/start feature I knew I was saving on fuel and the electronic
power assisted steering surely made the vehicle easier to handle. When the roads opened up to some long and winding jungle tracks, the vehicle simply adjusted itself to soak in the undulations. Another very interesting feature of the all-new Discovery is its cameras that are used to view every angle around the car, bet it surround, rear, front or side. The touch screen doubles up as a screen to show you the different angles and in fact one can see two different angles using these cameras. The screen simply splits into two parts showing these two different angles you have chosen.
VERDICT The all-new Discovery is not just about brilliant performance and fun to drive, it’s a vehicle that offers dollops of comfort to each of the seven passengers seated in those seven different seats within it. It’s a brilliant all-rounder, to say the least!

ray, why would a maker of beautiful cars, get into making a humongous sized SUV? Maybe it’s just to tell the world, we can do that. Though we got our hands on the new Jaguar F-Pace almost a year after the car was launched in India, we still felt it demanded a lot of respect. The first thought that comes to your mind when you think of the word “Jaguar” is stylishly designed cars with oodles of attitude in them. Thus, when the F-Pace was launched, everyone wondered why was there a need to bring out a giant of a vehicle when, just across the fence, Land Rover was making some of the most capable SUVs in the world. After all, are not Jaguar and Land Rover brothers in arms?

I got the 2993cc V6 twin turbo diesel engine F-Pace R-Sport to drive which produces around 296 hp @ 4000 rpm and a peak torque of 700Nm @ 2000rpm. The engine is mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission. The vehicle is mammoth in proportions with a length of 4731mm, a width 2175mm (with mirrors) and a height of 1651mm. Except for its size, everything about the front remind you of a Jaguar, especially the grille in front with the Jaguar logo.
Jaguar and his team have put in a lot of efforts to ensure that the vehicle is a lot better than some of the premium SUVs that are there in this world. As my luck would have it, the moment I was handed over the keys to this big machine, I had to crawl through some very heavy traffic which has become so common place now in Delhi. But to a great extent I was unmindful of the chaos outside, thanks to a brilliant air-con, the electrically adjustable steering and the automatic transmission. The sporty seats in front were more than comfortable and these come with several levels of poweroperated adjustments. The seats in front can be adjusted electrically with memory settings.
As darkness sets in, the car surprises you with its interior mood lighting. LED-powered puddle lights project the leaping Jaguar at night. The vehicle comes with a 12.3 inches HD virtual instrument display and a 10.2 inches Touchscreen that can help you adjust your 380 W Meridian digital sound system, navigation, radio and your Bluetooth
As for your security, the F-Pace comes with emergency brake assist and hazard lights under heavy braking, perimeter sensing alarm and immobiliser and airbags. Your drive can be adjusted via the JaguarDrive Control, with modes such as Dynamic, Comfort, Eco and Rain/Ice/Snow. Depending on the mode you are in, your throttle response and traction controls are adjusted automatically. The most thrilling mode, of course is the Dynamic button with the gear selected to ‘S’. The Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport is like a fierce animal out on a hunt. For the limited time I had in the city roads, I was only briefly able to experience the animalistic characteristics of the F-Pace R-Sport. At Rs 1,10,54,000 ex showroom Delhi, I had to be careful driving it, lest someone got too close to my vehicle while admiring it!
The rear too comes with plush seats and plenty of knee room and headroom

hen you hear the name Honda, the first thought that crosses your mind is a precision cut machine with engineering capabilities trickling down from its race pedigree bikes. While a majority of their lineup in India is aimed at the mass market and blends well in a sea of two wheelers, there are a few products that simply don’t fit in and I mean this in the best way possible. Sometimes it is better not to fit in and just stand out. That is essentially what the new Honda Grazia does very well. It has been tailor-made for those who just don’t want to fit in.
DESIGN AND STYLING Since we are on the subject of fitting in let’s begin with talking about the fresh design language seen on the new Honda Grazia. The scooter is distinct and can easily be identified in a sea of two wheelers. The front is bold and aggressive with a rather broad LED headlamp upfront. To look at, it is modish and futuristic with neatly chiseled lines. A sharp and angular bikini fairing only adds to the edgy flavour of this scooter. Honda has added black cladding all around the scooter giving it a slightly butch look. A mild similarity to the angles featured in the front can be observed on the side profile which are pleasing to the eye and also add to the sporty character of this scooter. The story in the rear is quite similar and the incorporation of split grab rails compliments the edgy looks. The scooter

rides on 90/ 90 R12 tubeless tyres in the front and 90/ 100 R10 tubeless tyres in the rear which have been wrapped around stylish blacked out 5 fin alloys. The saddle of the Honda Grazia has been set at 766mm. The seat is broad with a soft cushion providing adequate padding. The floor board is wide and long to accommodate tall riders as well. The ergonomics and rider comfort of the scooter is exceptional and could easily be a bench mark in the industry. Adding to the modish theme of the scooter is an all digital instrument cluster. The digital gauge displays speed, engine rpm, fuel level, odo meter and time. catering to a connected universe and how important our smart phones are to us these days - Honda is providing a glovebox with a USB charging slot on the Grazia. Another smart feature is the ability to open the seat from the same ignition key slot.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Powering this urban scooter is a 124.9cc fan cooled, single cylinder engine. The motor turns 8.52bhp and 10.54Nm of torque. While the company has claimed the scooter can achieve a top speed of 85kmph we were able to push it over 90kmph. That being said the climb up to 80kmph is linear but quick. Post 80kmph the motor feels out of juice and takes a wee bit more time to get to 85kmph. 0-60kmph comes in rather quickly in about 8 seconds but it takes an additional 9 seconds to go from 60-80kmph.

WHEELZ & ROADZ A riding experience
The engine has been mated to a V-Matic automatic transmission which ensures a very smooth and jerk free ride. The variant of the Grazia which we were testing had a disc brake setup in the front. The 190mm disc gets a two piston caliper. Braking in the rear is facilitated by a 130mm drum brake. Honda has also incorporated their CBS (Combi Brake System) on the Grazia. Brakes on the Grazia are quite impressive. They not only get the job done well but also do so in a very sure footed manner thus inspiring more confidence while hard braking or panic braking situations. The braking time for the scooter from 80-0kmph is about 7 seconds. The scooter rides on telescopic forks upfront and a spring loaded hydraulic type suspension in the rear. We felt the suspension has been tuned to be a bit stiff and rides well over pristine tarmac but one does get rattled over bad and broken roads. The suspension and tyre setup ensure adequate stability and grip. Honda has made sure the build quality and finish of the Grazia remain impeccable and the scooter’s switch gear is no exception to this.
VERDICT Honda has really nailed it on the head with the Grazia. It comes in to a highly populated segment with most products offering similar features and is able to create a distinct space for itself. If you are tired of fitting in and really want to make a statement, the Grazia is one set of wheels you should definitely go and check out.

FINAL HONDA CITY Vs HYUNDAI VERNA Vs MARUTI SUZUKI CIAZ

f you have been planning your first sedan and want to upgrade from the premium hatch segment but are confused as to which one is your best bet, fret not! We have you covered. The c-segment sedan section can get a bit confusing with the big names and equally competitive offerings, especially if you want a fully loaded package. So we decided to pit the best against each other—the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the Hyundai Verna.
COMFORT We found the ride in the Honda City to be a shade softer than that of the Hyundai Verna. We found the driver to be the most well ensconced in the Hyundai Verna and the seating to be the most comfortable in the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. In terms of space inside the cabin we found the City had the most headroom trailed closely by the Ciaz. Ciaz beat the other two hands

down in terms of leg room for the rear seat occupants. The bench of the rear seat as well is the longest on the Ciaz making it the most comfortable for rear seat occupants. The least space in the rear is on the Hyundai Verna while the Honda City trails the Ciaz for rear leg room space. Shoulder room as well was the most in the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The Ciaz arguably has the best driver point of view. But convenience points must be given to Honda here for offering an adjustment both for rake and for reach was not being offered in either the City or the Ciaz for the models which we had. In terms of ergonomics we found the Honda City and the Hyundai Verna to offer more convenience. RIDE: The overall ride comfort amongst the three was better in the

PICK! FEATURES
The Hyundai Verna and the Honda City both offer a lot in terms of technology while the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz gets all the basic essentials to ensure it remains in the list of modern and contemporary. All manufacturers have catered to the basic essentials such as electrically foldable and retractable ORVMs, day/ night IRVM, touch screen infotainment with bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity, rear AC vents, 12V power sockets, rear parking camera/ sensors, push button start/ stop and plenty of cubby holes and storage spaces. Both the Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, that facility has not been offered on the Honda City. The City gets Mirror Link as well as an internet browsing features from wifi based streaming. Hyundai goes a step ahead of the lot and instead of offering a 12V charging socket in the rear is offering a USB slot. Honda has not made any provision for a rear sun blind that however has been offered in the other two sedans.

In terms of ease of operation and convenience we found both the infotainment units in the Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz to be the easiest to use and connect your smart phone to. On the other hand Hyundai is offering a cooled glove box and ventilated front seats which does add weight to a purchasing decision considering the climate conditions that we come across in India. PERFORMANCE If you are a petrol head and the thrill of a drive is what rocks your boat then both the City and the Verna will definitely impress you. The Ciaz on the other hand does feel underpowered when compared to its rivals. Then again if it is mileage and economy that mean more, the Ciaz leads the pack by a long shot. In terms of refinement we felt the competitors
BEST PERFORMANCE The HYUNDAI VERNA on the other hand is more punchy and Hyundai has it spot on with the way they have tuned the 1.6L, 4 cylinder unit. We felt the HYUNDAI VERNA also had the smoothest gearbox amongst the three followed by the Ciaz and then the City. When it comes to handling especially at higher speeds, we felt the HYUNDAI VERNA was extremely stable and controlled.

The naturally aspirated motor simply loves to rev and the linear climb up the power band only adds to the joy of driving this sedan. The Verna feels punchy to drive and can really get your pulse racing. It accelerates in a jiffy and the additional gear can prove handy on long highway jaunts.
the HYUNDAI VERNA also had the smoothest gearbox amongst the three followed by the Ciaz and then the City. When it comes to handling especially at higher speeds, we felt the HYUNDAI VERNA was extremely stable and controlled.
DESIGN Being a critic of design can be quite tricky, being an automotive designer can be even
more tricky. While all three sedans conform to prescribed textbook designs, the Honda City does feel more futuristic than the other two. The facade and the overall design theme even on the inside seems ahead of its time. In contrast the Ciaz looks quite plain and the Verna’s interiors are not too exciting either. The Honda City also sports a full LED headlamp setup while both the Ciaz and the Verna get a projector
The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz however gets the lightest clutch amongst the lot and we felt the most comfy in the Ciaz while navigating through city traffic. The suspension setup on the Honda City was impeccable but we felt the Hyundai Verna was more adept at tackling undulations and bumps. The Ciaz also fares well amongst the lot in terms of ride comfort. The sedan was able to handle its weight immensely well and fared better than the Ciaz as well as the City. That being said both the Ciaz and the City were not too far behind on the points table. Braking performance was found to be the best on the Honda City. The HYUNDAI VERNA on the other hand is more punchy and Hyundai has it spot on with the way they have tuned the 1.6L, 4 cylinder unit. We felt

COMPARISON TEST headlamp setup. A point to be noted however is the missing LED DRL setup on the Ciaz which has been offered on both the City and the Verna. While the City looks futuristic in its design, Hyundai has done away with the fluidic looks and gone with an executive appeal on the Verna. The Ciaz as well does feel premium and has a mildly regal feel to it. We found the Ciaz to sport a premium alloy wheel design while the rims on the City were more contemporary. As far as alloy wheel designs go Hyundai has gone by the book with the set bolted on the Verna.
While the facade of the City is definitely the best looking, we felt the Verna had the best looking tail lamps and rear section. The design of the tail lamps does conform to Hyundai’s current staple philosophy but then again is definitely better looking than that of the City and the Ciaz. Out of the three and in terms of design the HONDA CITY appealed to us the most followed closely by Hyundai Verna and then the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
PRICE The Honda City is a tad bit more expensive
than the Verna, to be precise around Rs. 36,000 more. What you do get for that extra is more leg room, head room, cargo space, touch enabled air conditioning controls, wifi enabled internet browsing, futuristic looks and a rev happy motor. The Hyundai Verna on the other hand does offer more power, a slightly better mileage, features such as a cooled glove box, USB charging slots in the rear and ventilated front seats. The most affordable amongst the lot is the MARUTI SUZUKI CIAZ which retails for Rs. 9,41,267 (ex-showroom Delhi).

REVIEW
DAIWA L55FVC5N 55 FULLHD SMART LED TV PRICE `41,990 Big-sized televisions have always fascinated people, but many baulk at their expensive price tags. However, in recent years a lot of brands have come up with smart looking TVs with big panels at affordable rates. Unfortunately, many a times there has been a tradeoff in terms of the quality of the product. The Daiwa (sounds almost like Aiwa!) L55FVC5N FullHD Smart LED TV is a 55-inch TV that comes at a rather affordable price of Rs 41,990. What about its picture quality? We find out! The TV definitely looks very modern. The bezel area is respectably thin and causes no distractions while watching content on the TV. It has a slim frame that gets a brushed type of finish. The back houses all the input ports and connectors on a separate panels. The connector list is pretty standard and you get all the necessary inputs such as 2 HDMI, VGA, 2 USB 2.0, RJ45 port for internet connection and more. The TV also has built-in Wi-FI and there is a screen capture and a screen mirroring option as well. The right side of the back also has a few controls in case you cannot get your hands on the remote. The Daiwa L55FV5CN is great when it comes to picture. The A+ Grade panel gets a something called as HRDP which enhances the clarity and colours that are produced by the screen. In my viewing experience I did not feel that any colour was too dominant compared to others and the brightness levels were adequate. Part of me only wished that the TV had a bigger resolution instead of the 1080p resolution. The 20W speakers are pretty loud and that is great as this 55-inch TV would most likely be kept at a distance. The bass output is lesser than what I like and if listening to music is something that you do regularly then I would suggest hooking it up with a dedicated sound system. For all other purposes like internet, etc the speakers suffice. Since this is a smart TV you can stream YouTube, Netflix and other services, browsing the web, managing your E-mail etc. In fact, the remote has dedicated buttons for YouTube, Netflix and Hotstar.
There is a button for viewing the TV in Eco mode as well and there are three levels of it. A mouse button has also been provided, which on pressing brings up a pointer hand on the screen. The disappointing thing, however, is that when you are in the mouse pointer mode then the mouse does not follow the motion of the remote. Instead you have to use the four arrow keys provided on the remote, in order to navigate through the various screens. There is 8GB of ROM for you to store any apps, audio or video files. The CPU on-board is a Cotex A7 1.3GHz dual core and is coupled with Mali-400MP2 GPU and 1GB DDR3 RAM. The OS that you get is Android KitKat 4.4.4. While you can browse through the various menus with relative ease, the hardware does struggle at times and there are occasional lags that you will experience. You can cast your smartphone or tablet screen on the TV and enjoy viewing those game graphics on a big screen. The Daiwa L55FV5CN is no doubt a capable TV at an affordable price that does not compromise on the picture quality. In fact it impressed me the most on that front. The looks too are also very appealing. The Smart TV capabilities are also carried well and the only real issue I had with the TV was the mouse. If you can overlook that, then this TV is a great buy for a large room.

Royal Enfield launches UK Technology Centre & unveils new engine Motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield, the global leader in mid-size motorcycle (250cc-750cc) segment, unveiled its first modern twin-cylinder engine at its new Technology Centre in Leicestershire, England. This new 650cc air cooled parallel twin engine will power the newest generation of Royal Enfield motorcycles. The company also announced the launch of its new Technology Centre in Bruntingthorpe Proving Grounds, Leicestershire. The brand new facility, located at the heart of central Midlands area of UK, is housed at the largest privately owned vehicle test track facility, thereby ensuring ease of access to a host of vehicle development, engineering and testing related facilities. In keeping with its ambition to expand and lead the global mid-size motorcycle segment (250-750cc), Royal Enfield has been investing extensively towards increasing capacities, infrastructure and product, and as well as people capabilities. The new technology centre in UK was set-up with a view to bring a more global approach towards product and technology. Also, the fact that UK is the birthplace of the brand, made it an obvious choice. The core idea behind the modern 650cc twin engine was to develop a global platform that would carry the Royal Enfield legacy and character into modern context. The engine has been designed to offer the right balance between power, torque and usability so as to ensure a smooth and unintimidating riding experience. It will
offer broad spread of torque which will make the motorcycle easy to ride without frequently shifting gears. This new engine has an output capability of 47bhp and 52Nm torque. This makes the ride experience hassle-free and smooth. The twin pipes and the cooling fins on the classic air-cooled engine render a visually beautiful impact. The engine maintains an under-stressed 9.5:1 compression ratio and the fuel injection system ensures that smooth, accessible power is available at all times. The focus of the development was on giving adequate torque, spread broadly throughout the rev range so that riders can tap into it instantly at anytime without the need for excessive shifting. As a result the engine feels fun, potent, and easy-touse. Making this possible are a number of elements, starting in the very depths of the engine where there is a single-piece
forged crankshaft (a first for Royal Enfield) which ensures strength and the ability to handle the twin’s torque. This crankshaft uses a 270-degree firing order, which gives a high degree of character to the engine’s power delivery. Also, thanks to the use of a balancer shaft, unwelcome vibrations have been eliminated. The motor retains Royal Enfield’s ‘air-cooled’ engine legacy, which lends to a simple, cleaner, more elegant look with fewer components and less weight. It ensures that the engine remains as uncomplicated and uncluttered as possible. Using ambient air-flow combined with engine oil to keep engine temperature at an optimal level means that a radiator, fan, hoses, and other components are unnecessary. This keeps the motor clean. Just as relevant as the engine’s individuality, is its sound. The characteristic ‘thump’ of Royal Enfield’s singles is cherished by legions of enthusiasts, and great lengths were taken to ensure that the new 650 twin gives an equally compelling soundtrack. Hours were spent tweaking every contributing variable to engine sound, resulting in twin silencers that rumble with just the right tone.

Continental Head-Up Display with DMD Technology goes into production
Automotive manufacturer Lincoln Motor Company, a division of Ford Motor Company is, for the first time, putting into production Continental’s head-up display with digital micromirror device (DMD) technology to allow drivers to communicate even better with their vehicles in the future. The solution from the technology company was first integrated into the 2017 Lincoln Continental, followed by the 2018 Lincoln Navigator. Head-up displays show all relevant information in the driver’s field of vision, reducing driver distraction and therefore making a significant contribution to enhanced comfort and safety. “It is a great achievement
for the entire team that our digital micromirror device technology is going into production for the first time at Lincoln. Our solution closes the gap between the classic head-up display and augmented reality head-up displays and provides a better image with a larger display area,” says Dr. Frank Rabe, head of the Instrumentation & Driver HMI business unit at Continental. Replacing previously used TFT LCD technology, the DMD generates graphical elements in the same way as digital cinema projectors, based on mirror optics and a picture generating unit (PGU). Thanks to an intermediate screen, sequential colour
management and a lens-based optical path, the image is brighter and sharper than with conventional head-up displays. The Lincoln head-up display is one of the brightest and largest in its class and allows drivers to see the display even through polarized sunglasses. Moreover, due to the increased display area, more information can be displayed, for example, from other elements of the holistic human-machine interface. These characteristics then enable Lincoln to reduce redundancy between the head-up display and cluster. The DMD technology also forms the basis for augmented reality headup displays.
Durr’s EcoReflect, an innovative light tunnel to check paint finish EcoReflect from Dürr is an innovative light tunnel for checking surface quality. With an innovative light concept and a perfectly ergonomic environment design, it delivers precise and highly focused vision. This permits continuous detection of irregularities in paint with maximum accuracy. Before car bodies leave the paint shop and go into final assembly, the paint structure is checked for the smallest flaws like inclusions of dust or small hairs. The EcoReflect light tunnel provides the best visual and ergonomic conditions for this difficult quality inspection task. Detecting deviations calls for a reflected image with high, but not too stimulating contrasts. With EcoReflect, the number of contrast lines in the field of vision is also based on a suitable stimulus frequency. Since it generates vertical contrast lines, the operators can follow the progression of the
48 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2017
car bodies when checking them. In contrast to conventional systems with horizontal lines, with this system the operators do not have to keep looking up and down, which is much more ergonomic and less physically strenuous. Glare-free vision is another important prerequisite for detecting surface flaws and at the same time minimizing fatigue symptoms for
operators. With EcoReflect, appropriate prisms at the lamps ensure that as much light as possible is shone onto the car bodies, and that the operators are not subjected to glare. The radiation principle of asymmetric lighting helps here. Dürr has also enhanced the luminaire concept with the use of LED modules. The result is both high contrasts in the reflected image and areas with homogeneous illumination. The LED technology used requires just the half of the energy of conventional fluorescent tubes. EcoReflect is also more economical than standard LED designs because the arched shape of the light tunnel casts a particularly large amount of light onto the car body. EcoReflect can be constructed as an individual station or as a line. The system can also be extended and customised in terms of light colours and materials for complex flaw types.
