P. THARYAN (ROY) he December 2020 issue of Motown India magazine has loads of car and bike reviews. Cars that have been reviewed include the Nissan Magnite, Mercedes EQC, Volkswagen Tiguan & T-Roc and a few others. The two-wheelers reviewed include the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 and the two smart motorcycles from the
Husqvarna family, the Svartpilen 250 and the Vitpilen 250. This issue also carries the latest from Global NCAP crash test results. It is heartening to note that India’s Mahindra Group is getting better at making safer cars for India. Their allnew Thar has scored 4 stars safety rating. While this is good news for car users in India, the bad news is that cars like the S-Presso from Maruti Suzuki, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and the Kia Seltos have not done well. The worst performance came from S-Presso which scored an absolute duck in safety rating. It is shameful that India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki, which is incidentally among the most profitable vehicle manufacturers in the country, has scored a duck when it comes to adult occupant safety during a crash test. Maruti Suzuki has to really pull up its socks when it comes to making safe cars in India. In the Features section we have some interesting reports. One of them explains the techniques of when and how to deploy the 4H and 4L gears while going off-roading. A lot of people are not aware that these gears have a critical role to play in off-roading and have to be engaged very carefully. As the year is coming to an end, I sincerely wish and hope that we are able to leave behind the torrid memories of a disastrous year that was badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. I wish all my readers good health and prosperity.

All-New MAHINDRA THAR receives Global NCAP 4-star safety rating

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Kia Seltos get low scores
The all-new Mahindra Thar has got a 4-star safety rating from Global NCAP. Global NCAP, a major programme of the Towards Zero Foundation, a UK based charity working internationally in support of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, has awarded the 4-Star safety rating to the all-new Mahindra Thar. The official Global NCAP test for the All-New Thar was conducted in Germany recently. This is in stark contrast to some
other Indian vehicles that performed badly in similar crash tests conducted by Global NCAP more than a week back. The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso achieved zero stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios achieved two stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. The Kia Seltos achieved three stars for adult
occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. Coming to the Thar, the vehicle achieved four star rating for both adult and child occupants in the new round of #SaferCarsForIndia crash tests. The recently launched Mahindra Thar was tested in its basic safety specification, two airbags, and reached 4 stars for adult and child occupants. The Thar also meets the side impact UN 95 regulation.

CAR NEWS Global NCAP also tested Thar’s Electronic Stability Control according to UN regulation. ESC is not fitted as standard on the Thar and although the model met minimum regulatory requirements, the car showed an unstable dynamic behaviour. Global NCAP recommends a review and improvement. Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP said, “Mahindra’s commitment to safer cars is once again displayed for consumers and shows that it is possible to offer good safety performance in the Indian market. It is encouraging to see manufacturers that also offer high levels of protection for children traveling in their vehicles. The Thar demonstrates the capacity of Mahindra to improve its fleet safety.” In a press statement, David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation said, “Another good result for Mahindra which shows the manufacturer’s commitment to safety. It is very satisfying to see this growing vehicle safety trend in the Indian car market, which combines minimum regulatory requirements with the purchasing power of #SaferCarsforIndia informed consumers, helping to drive demand for ever safer vehicles.” The Thar offers double frontal

airbags as standard. Driver and passenger’s head and neck showed good protection. Driver’s chest offered adequate protection and passenger chest showed good protection. The structure was rated as stable but the footwell area was rated as unstable, not being capable of withstanding further loadings. Both adult knee areas were optimizsd to reduce significant injuries. Both child occupants received almost full protection during the test. The Thar offers standard ISOFIX anchorages and top tether together with 3 point belts for all seating positions. Several Mahindra vehicles have done well in these Global NCAP crash
tests. The XUV300 established a new benchmark in terms of vehicle safety in India having been awarded a 5-star rating by Global NCAP and topped Global NCAP’s six-year safety rankings, making the XUV300 the safest among all the vehicles tested by Global NCAP between 2014 and 2020. The Marazzo was also certified with a strong 4 star rating by Global NCAP for Adult Occupation Protection. In fact, Mahindra was the first and only manufacturer in India to be awarded the “Safer Choice Award” by GNCAP.
MARUTI SUZUKI S-PRESS IS A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT In similar tests carried out by GNCAP earlier, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso achieved a disappointing zero star rating. The three models rated in the latest phase of testing were the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and Kia Seltos. Global NCAP chose the entry-level version of each model. The S-Presso was only fitted with a driver airbag as standard, while the other models offered both driver and passenger airbags as standard. The range of results, from zero to three stars, highlights significant differences in adult occupant protection even in cars that meet minimum regulatory standards. For the #SaferCarsForIndia project,

CAR NEWS Global NCAP currently only tests frontal crash protection for occupants and not side impact and pedestrian protection. These very relevant safety scenarios will form part of the future evolution of Global NCAP’s crash test protocols in India. Alejandro Furas said, “It is very disappointing that Maruti Suzuki, the manufacturer with the largest share of the Indian market, offers such low safety performance for Indian consumers. Domestic manufacturers like Mahindra and Tata have demonstrated high levels of safety and protection for their customers, both achieving five-star performance. Surely it’s time for Maruti Suzuki to demonstrate this commitment to safety for its customers?” David Ward said, “We have seen important progress on car safety in India, with new legislation introduced by the government and manufacturers like Mahindra and Tata accepting the Global NCAP five star challenge and producing models which go well beyond minimum regulatory requirements. There is no place for zero rated cars in
the Indian market. It remains a great disappointment that an important manufacturer like Maruti Suzuki does not recognise this.”
KIA SELTOS
HYUNDAI GRAND I10 NIOS The Grand i10 Nios achieved two stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. The Grand i10 Nios offers double frontal airbags and pretensioners for both front passengers as standard. Its structure was rated as unstable. Its footwell area was rated as unstable. Head and neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection was weak for the driver and adequate for the passenger leading to limitation of the Seat belt reminder (SBR) points having standard SBR for front passengers. Child occupant protection showed poor results mainly explained by the decision of the car manufacturer not to recommend the CRSs for the test. Global NCAP is of the opinion that car manufacturers are responsible for all the occupants and child occupants are frequent passengers. The car does not offer standard 3 point belts in all seating positions and does not offer standard ISOFIX anchorages.

Kia Seltos achieved three stars for adult occupant protection.
The Seltos achieved three stars for adult occupant protection and two stars for child occupant protection. The Seltos offers double frontal airbag and pretensioners as standard. Its structure was rated as a borderline case unstable. Its footwell area was rated as unstable. Head protection was adequate for both front passengers as both airbags bottomed out during the crash test. Neck protection for adult occupants was good. Chest protection was good for passenger and marginal for driver. The car offers SBR for the front seating positions. Child occupant protection showed poor results mainly because the manufacturers refused to recommend CRS for the test, and this decision brings the dynamic score to zero. The dynamic performance was poor as the head of the 3 year old showed contact during the rebound face after the impact. The car showed limited protection for the three-yearoldd head and neck while the 18 month old received acceptable protection. The car does not offer standard 3 point belts in all seating positions and has no ISOFIX anchorages standard.

PORSCHE Taycan e-car in Guinness World Records for longest drift The Porsche Taycan has entered the Guinness World Records for the longest drift with an electric vehicle. The scene of the world record was the Porsche Experience Centre (PEC) Hockenheimring in Germany. Porsche instructor Dennis Retera did 210 laps on the 200 metrelong drift circle without the front wheels ever pointing in the same direction as the curve. After 55 minutes the sideways expert had covered a total of 42.171 kilometres. By completing this marathon distance, Retera secured the world record for the longest continuous drift in an electric
car. The average speed was 46 km/h. The record was achieved with the rear-wheel drive version of the Taycan, which is already on sale in China. The Porsche Taycan is already a record holder in many other disciplines: whether it is the gruelling 24-hour endurance run over 3,425 km on the high-speed track in Nardò; the best time in its class of 7:42 minutes on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife or the 26 sprints from a standing start to 200 km/h at the airfield in Lahr – the record statistics of the first all-electric sports car from Porsche make impressive reading.

he all-new 2020 Mahindra Thar SUV looks bold and drives well, both in the city as well as off road, though people buying this muscular looking vehicle will be driving it a lot beyond the ordinary roads. In many modern SUVs, the 4 wheel drive systems have electronic push button, “on the fly’ features that let you shift while driving. You can also shift to different off road as well as on road drive modes by simply turning a knob on the floor console, for example. It’s as simple as that. But in the Mahindra Thar, in order to get into the 4 wheel drive mode, you need to manually engage this 4WD or 2WD mode as the case may be. The modes include 2H, 4H, N and 4L. In this report we shall be explaining to you about the Thar’s off roading features and most important, how do you engage the two four wheel drive modes, the 4 High or 4H and the 4 Low or 4L.

FEATURES Let’s start by explaining to you this 4wd feature. Just next to the gear lever on the floor you will see a small lever. This is the one that needs to be engaged when you need to go off roading. Now if you do not engage them correctly and use them incorrectly you may even end up destroying your transfer case.
TRANSFER CASE & DIFFERENTIALS Now what is a transfer case? Very briefly put, in order for the 4 wheel drive mechanism to work, a transfer case has to be part of the drivetrain. The transfer case transfers power from the transmission to the front and rear axles by means of drive shafts. Basically, it ensures that the engine power is send to the front and rear axles. Four wheel drive vehicles are equipped with a transfer case that switches between 2WD and 4WD operating modes, either manually or automatically. In the Thar it is manual. The 2020 Thar we drove had an all-new BS-6 compliant 2.2 litre mHawk diesel engine which produces around 130 bhp & 320 Nm of torque. This model also has a 6 speed torque convertor automatic transmission. The Thar has a Manual Shift 4x4 Transfer Case with Low Crawl Ratio. Other features include a body-onframe construction, independent front suspension & multi-link rear suspension set-up, mechanical locking differential on the rear axle and brake locking differential. This mechanical locking differential automatically locks the differential on the rear axle in low-traction situations when a wheel speed difference of around 100rpm or more is detected across the axle. Technically speaking, this feature, which has been there in the Thar for the last few years, prevents a wheel spin.
While driving at speeds between 25kmph to around 95km per hour, you can shift from your two-wheel drive mode to 4High without stopping the vehicle. You can also start your journey on a rough terrain by deploying the 4H high mode.
controlling wheel spin there is also a need to control the wheel speed side to side across a driven axle. That’s where the brake lock differential comes into play. BLD is not bothered how fast the wheels are turning, it ensures that they are turning at the same speed. The new Thar gets BLD
on the front axles and mechanical locking differential on the rear axle.
SHIFTING GEARS AND ENGAGING 4 WHEEL DRIVE MODES There are few things one needs to keep in mind while deploying your 4

wheel drive modes, whether it is shift on the fly or manual. While driving at speeds between 25kmph to around 95km per hour, you can shift from your two wheel drive mode to 4High without stopping the vehicle. You can also start your journey on a rough terrain by deploying the 4H high mode. The 4 High mode gives you more traction on all four wheels and this is for terrains like slippery roads, snowy or icy roads, gravel, rocky roads, rough terrain etc. 4H allows your vehicle to drive at fast speeds while power is sent to all four wheels providing your vehicle with better traction than an ordinary 2-wheel drive. Now coming to 4L, this is a 4 wheel

In order to deploy this, you have got to come to a halt, put the vehicle in neutral, depress the small lever and shift it to neutral and tap the lever further down to bring it to the 4L level.
halt and once you deploy 4L, your speed should be restricted to not more than 15 kmph.
If you notice that on the small lever, there is a 4L, N, 4H and 2H. The N or Neutral is there so that you accidentally do not move to 4L while at a speed and damage your transfer case. Thus, the most important lesson is that in order to shift to 4L, you have to bring your vehicle to a
Now that you have mastered the art of playing with the small lever next to the gear lever, you can go out in into the wild and enjoy the beauty around you, enjoy nature to the hilt and admire the wonderful animals that inhabit this beautiful world of ours.

he Nissan Magnite will be offered in four trim levels i.e. XE, XL, XV and XV Premium. The SUV will get two petrol engine choices, a 1 litre B4D naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.0 litre Turbo HRA0 petrol engine. Again, the normal petrol engine will only have the choice of a 5-speed manual transmission and will be offered in all four trim levels. The turbo petrol engine will be offered only in three trim levels starting at XL level. Each of these three trim levels will further have an option of a 5 speed manual transmission as well as a Continuously Variable Transmission or CVT. We got to drive the 1 litre turbo petrol model and took turns driving both the manual as well as the CVT.
EXTERIORS There are so many good looking products in the sub 4-metre SUV segment in India and the new Nissan Magnite simply adds to this growing list. Words that come to your mind when you see

the Magnite for the first time are bold, muscular, stylish, dynamic, handsome, etc. Let’s move to the front of the vehicle. The grille is big and endearing with ample chrome on either side of it. The new Nissan logo sits smartly at the centre. The Magnite gets sleek bi-projector, LED headlamps and LED turn indicator, L-shaped daytime running lamps (DRLs) and LED fog lamps. It also gets silver skid plates in front which give the vehicle a sporty stance. We got a brown coloured top end variant and this came with a black colour on the roof. Along with the muscular bonnet, it enhances the Magnite’s sporty looks. The side profile of the Magnite too is very sporty, with its high ground clearance of 205mm, square wheel arch finishers, smart 16 inches alloy wheels, integrated side cladding and chrome handles. The roof rails are functional and can take on a load of up to 50 kgs. The Magnite gets chrome beltline with the rear quarter window moulding also in chrome. your passions as you get to see a smart chunky spoiler with LED high mounted stop light. The radio antenna, I felt was very ordinary and a shark fin antenna, at least in the top variant, would have further enhanced the vehicle’s looks. The rear windshield or as some people call it the rear window, indicates that the vehicles comes with defogger. The Magnite has sporty, split signature tail lamps. The ‘Turbo’ and ‘CVT’ badges are prominently displayed at the rear.
INTERIORS As you step into the driver seat, you realise the Magnite has a great cockpit interface design. The 5-degree tilt of the centre-stack allows easy access to the centre console without diverting focus from the road. The cabin overall looks spacious and large. Thanks to a uniquely designed floor console or centre console, there is ample space between the two front seats. The seats per se in front have more than adequate bolsters and offer immense lumbar as well as under thigh support.

The front seats are height adjustable, and once you have set it according to your height, you realise that the visibility angle is brilliant. The rear seats too are comfortable with decent headroom and leg room. There are separate AC vents for the rear passengers with blower speed control. There is also a 12v charging socket. The SUV has 336 litres of cargo space which more than doubles once you fold the rear seats. It also has various utility storages. Talking of storages, the Magnite has a 10 litre glove box, 1 litre bottle holder on the inner panels of the doors and the rear arm rest comes with two cup holders and a mobile phone holder.

Since we were driving it mainly on the Delhi-Manesar highway in North India, we got to experience city driving conditions as well as clean highway experience. This is because we came across clumsy drivers on the highway who insisted on keeping their slow vehicles on the fast lane and some truckers who insisted that the entire wide road belonged to them. Thus we had to do a lot of maneuvering and the car behaved very well.

There is no dearth of power in this turbo engine and since this manual transmission comes with tall gear ratios, we could hold on to 2nd and 3rd gears and yet enjoy tremendous speed on the roads for overtaking. This vehicle boasts of best torque to weight ratio in its segment, and this was quite evident all throughout our three hours drive. The cabin too is well insulated and NVH levels well contained. Thus we not only experienced a very roomy cabin but also a relatively quiet one while we were driving on the highway full of trucks and cars. The ride and handling of the vehicle is good and even though the suspension is a wee bit on the stiffer side, we really were not troubled by the bumps on the road we confronted on our way. On our way back we got our hands on the CVT model. CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission is one that is very different from a conventional automatic transmission. Nissan is offering its popular Xtronic CVT in the Magnite. The Xtronic is already doing justice in several Nissan models globally like the Altima, Maxima and the Nissan Murano. Nissan has explained its CVT in its global site as one that provides smooth and “stepless” ratio changes, unlike conventional transmission systems that use sets of fixed gears. Nissan’s CVT technology offers smooth and fuelefficient “fun-to-drive” performance in an extensive range of Nissan models, from the compact class all the way up to high-powered luxury vehicles. The Magnite in India gets this all popular Xtronic CVT. To explain a bit of its technology, CVT is an automatic transmission that uses two pulleys with a steel belt running between them. To continuously vary its gear ratios, the CVT simultaneously adjusts the diameter of the “drive pulley” that transmits torque from the engine
and the “driven pulley” that transfers torque to the wheels. With stepless shifting of gear ratios, the CVT can avoid the shift-shock and deliver smooth driving. Well, to our delight, we did experience the smooth acceleration and a drive without any engine or transmission hiccups. We simply had to slot the CVT lever into the D or Drive mode and all we had to do was look out for the number of clowns driving on the national highway who had no understanding of the fast and slow lanes, no understanding of lane changes and no understanding of the word “decency”. There is also an ‘L’ mode. This is basically a Launch gear which is like a first gear in a standard transmission. The launch gear enables stronger and smoother acceleration from a standing position and it also provides increased engine braking for hill descent, etc. This gear is also beneficial when towing a heavy vehicle and also for hilly terrains. The Nissan Magnite has a lot of safety features too that include anti lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, vehicle dynamic control, electronic stability control & traction control system, hill start assist, dual airbags, hydraulic brake boost, anti roll bar, among others.
VERDICT The new Nissan Magnite offers a whole host of exciting features, many of them segment first and unique. When it comes to performance, the 1 litre turbo petrol engine is a powerhouse packed with tremendous energy. Both the transmission offerings provide their own advantages, without compromising on performance. Now all one has to see is how fast this Magnite SUV is able to ignite the passions of those keen on buying a sub 4-metre compact SUV.

MERCEDES-BENZ EQC 400
SUPREMELY ELECTRIC Report / Photography: Motown India Bureau
W
hen you look at the MercedesBenz EQC 400, you wonder why the company has made such a big electric luxury car. It’s simple; this German car major wants to convey to everyone that “hey look here, we can make a real big electric vehicle that is far smarter than all your electric cars out there”. It is like cocking a snook at everyone.
Rs.99.30 lakh ex showroom. The price includes for the first 50 units offerings like AC Wall Box charger, home electrical charger,5 years unlimited onroad assistance, 5 years comprehensive service package, 5 year unlimited kilometers extended warranty, 8 years/160000kms battery cover. The AC wall box charger looks very exquisite and hi tech and it makes a lot of sense when charging the vehicle.
But why launch such a vehicle in India? Again, simple, they want to tell every car maker in India offering those electric cars that “hey, we are the best”. Obviously they are not bothered how many they might sell in India, but at the end of the day it’s just a powerful statement from the company in the electric vehicle space.
The Mercedes-Benz EQC comes with three charging options – a 50kW DC fast charger, a 7.4kW AC wall charger, and a 2.4kW plug-in charger. While the DC fast charger will take about 90 minutes to charge the battery from 0 to 100 per cent, the AC wall box will take 10 hours to do the same. The standard plug charger will take about 21 hours to charge the battery from 0 to 100 per cent.

Yes, but the only thing that one has to worry big time in this car is its very low ground clearance. Even a small bump on the road or a pot hole is enough for the car to bottom out. shifts behind the steering wheel and these serve a very different purpose unlike the ones in conventional vehicles. These are used to adjust your regenerative braking. Recuperation – also known as regenerative braking – is the recovery of the kinetic energy released during braking or thrust operation. ... The smoother the braking process, the higher the proportion of regenerated braking energy. With these paddle shifts one can influence the recuperation level. The paddle on the
left increases the level of recuperation, the paddle on the right reduces it. The following stages are available: ∫ D + (coasting) ∫ D (low recuperation) ∫ D - (medium recuperation) ∫ D - - (high recuperation): This makes one-pedal driving possible, because in most situations the recuperative deceleration is enough not to require operation of the brake pedal. he 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan was launched in the country early this year and has since caught the imagination of several SUV buyers in the country. Since it claims to be an Allspace model, I was keen to know what space the company was talking about. It was by chance I discovered that the rear seat was so well designed and its immediate front seat so foldable that one could easily stretch one’s legs and remain comfortable during a long

But just to be more true to my observations, this SUV is a sevenseater and that means it fits five adults in the first two rows and two kids in the 3rd row. The 3rd row seat is ideally meant for children and is too cramped a space for two adults to sit. Now let us get back to the finer details of the 7-seater Volkswagen Tiguan which is priced at around

The side profile of the vehicle reveals the massive length of the vehicle with an equally long wheelbase. The car has a length of 4701mm, a width of 1839mm and a height of 1674mm. The dashboard is made of soft material and on the top you find a small storage area which I thought was very innovative. The flap opens up the moment you gently tap it. You can keep your toll receipt or coins in this small cavity there. The glove compartment has a light in it and slots for two SD cards and a CD. The vehicle also comes with LED ambient lighting. Then you have split folding and adjustable second row seats, besides front and rear centre arm rest. The front row and second row seats are very comfortable, though I will not say this for the third row of seats, where space has been compromised big time. Like I mentioned earlier, the third row is either best suited for children or even better if it is folded down, you have ample space for luggage. The luggage compartment space which is 340 litres increases to 1274 litres. You have keyless entry and drive system in the Tiguan with electricallyoperated tailgate opening operation, provided you have the key on you. A flick of the foot under the rear of the vehicle opens the electric tailgate. A digital cockpit with the Active Info display system replaces analogue meters with advanced digital screens. The analogue dial gauges are in fact shown only virtually. The vehicle gets 3-zone auto air conditioning with AC temperature

The touch screen infotainment system takes you through several functions like radio, navigation, vehicle settings, etc. The system has AppConnect, which uses MirrorLink, CarPlay and Android Auto for easy linking of smartphones. Then you also have data on driving dynamics, vehicle status, infotainment and assist functions in the centre area of the speedometer and rev counter. The switches mounted on the left of the steering wheel are primarily for cruise control and speed limiter, while the two on either side at the bottom are for volume adjustment and radio channel search. The vehicle also has Park Assist function which measures spaces on the side of the street while you drive past. If it finds a suitable parallel or perpendicular space, it takes over the steering to maneuver the vehicle into the spot. We did not get the right space to test this function.

on the vehicle’s exterior, there is also a badging of 4Motion on the fenders and the rear of the vehicle. You also find this badging inside the vehicle. It is like a badge of honour for Volkswagen. 4MOTION is basically Volkswagen’s smart four-wheel drive system. The Tiguan is powered by a 2.0l TSI engine mated to a 7-speed DSG 4Motion transmission. The engine delivers a peak power of around 187hp@4200 rpm and a peak torque of 320Nm@1500-4100rpm. The 4Motion 4-wheel drive system comes with a drive mode selector. By turning the rotary knob on the centre console, one can select Snow, Eco, Off Road and Off Road individual modes for driving. The Eco can be further changed to Normal, Sport and Individual settings. The Individual setting allows you to further change some of your
driving dynamic settings. Thus there are several settings to choose from for your drive depending on your terrain and requirements. I felt that was quite a versatile offering. The 7-Speed DSG which has a great reputation for smooth shifts and efficiency, proved its versatile characteristics during our drive, whether it was on the highway or the usual city traffic. You can always move your gear shift lever to S mode or the manual mode or even use the paddle shifts to experience the capability of this DSG. We certainly had no complains. The Tiguan driving characteristics reflect the true German engineering genes. Volkswagen has always had a great reputation for building solid vehicles that do not compromise on performance as well as ride and handling. The Tiguan simply carries

that legacy with great authority. Tiguan is powered by a 2.0l TSI engine mated to a 7-speed DSG 4Motion transmission. Tiguan driving characteristics reflect the true German engineering genes.
The Tiguan scores high even when it comes to its safety features. The Tiguan has 7-airbags, ABS, ESP, tyre pressure monitoring system, Electronic stability Programme, Anti-lock braking system and Electronic differential lock (EDL), besides features like Hill Descend Control, Auto Hold, seat belt warning, Isofix, etc.
VERDICT The seven-seater Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is a rock solid vehicle that is spacious and it comes with several features that offer the best of convenience and comfort. As for its performance, it allows you to experience a perfect drive on any terrain of your choice. Now does that not make the Tiguan a big shot of the SUV segment?

EXTERIOR The T-Roc is a decent shaped vehicle with a coupe style roof and a wide front end. Though it may not have an aggressive butch look, it has proved to be rock solid since it has earned a 5-star Euro NCAP rating for adult and child occupants. The front horizontal chrome-lined grille gives the vehicle a wide appearance. The integrated LED headlamps, the broad DRLs and the fog lamps below that make up for the rest of the front elements. The VW log sits bold at the centre of the grille.

of the Volkswagen T-Roc are decent to say the least. The quality of plastics used is good and the ‘Vienna’ leather seats are very comfortable. The dash area is almost plain Jane except for some subtle trim lining. You get heated front seats, but the same are not ventilated and above all, they are not powered. Since this SUV is not a tall one, in fact shorter than many of the sub 4-metre SUVs in the country, the ride quality is as comfortable and stable as a sedan with a low centre of gravity. At high speeds, the vehicle is firmly planted on the tarmac with no body roll whatsoever. Since the power is sent to the front wheels, the T-Roc is in a hurry to move ahead. The 7-speed DSG is a versatile transmission and when you are to drive it in the sport mode or the manual mode, you can feel the DSG at its best.

But there are also times when you want to take things easy and drive like a gentle soul, well that is the time when the Active Cylinder Technology (ACT) kicks in. What is does is that it deactivates two out of the four cylinders of the engine and this in turn ensures that the engine consumes less fuel.

Surprisingly, the vehicle does not come with cruise control feature which has become such a regular feature even in smaller cars. Their own Volkswagen Polo offers this feature. I wonder why VW omitted this from the T-Roc. But what it does get as a modern feature is the lane-keep assist which will gently nudge the car back into line if it detects overstepping the line on the road. This feature is not so important, rather in its place the vehicle should have had cruise control and speed limiter feature which come as steering wheel controls. Now coming back to the lane assist feature, this actually trains you into a good driver with good driving habits. Because each time when you change lanes, if you give your indicators, then this lane change warning does not get activated. It is only gets activated when you do not give indicators and you vehicle strays across its lane. The steering becomes hard and kind of tries to stop you from changing lanes and also gives you a warning through its voice enabled system. The flip side to this technology is that in case you are driving fast and you suddenly notice a stalled vehicle in your lane further ahead and you
www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com | www.motownindiacv.com
suddenly try changing lanes in panic, you will find it hard as the system nudges you back in your lane. You may panic in this situation and may not use your indicators to change lanes. But again, Volkswagen engineers will tell you that they also have a headon collision warning system which prevents the vehicle from colliding into a stationery vehicle. There is a bit of plus and minus there, in our views. Meanwhile, there are a lot of other safety features in this vehicles that include 6-airbags, ABS, ESC, tyre pressure monitoring system and reverse camera, disc brakes and isofix child seat mounts, etc.
VERDICT The high points of the Volkswagen T-Roc are its ride and handling, its engine performance and its super efficient transmission. But unfortunately the T-Roc is in a price sensitive segment where competition today is offering a lot more in terms of comfort and convenience. The large seat knob and the fact that it misses out on cruise control will definitely go against the T-Roc. Not so T-Roc-king, I would say!

The Multi Stage Shift Device varies the combined output of the engine and motor, amplifying engine torque and increasing drive force by 24%. It utilizes engine speed in a wide range from low to high speeds, harnessing maximum engine output from 50km/h, as well as enabling high-speed driving at lower engine rpms for a quiet ride. As is expected of a car of this nature, the cabin is so well insulated and comfortable that all you have got to do is drive with your hands on the steering. The car has a large head up display which measures a mammoth 600mmx 150mm. It offers a multitude of safety and convenience features that include not only to protection to the occupants but also to pedestrians in case of an accident. ROYAL ENFIELD METEOR 350
MODERN CRUISER Report: P. Tharyan; Photography: P. Tharyan & Afsar Baig
R
oyal Enfield, a leading cruiser motorcycle maker, launched an all-new easy cruiser, the Royal Enfield Meteor 350. The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 will be available in 3 editions − Fireball, Stellar and Supernova. The Meteor 350 will compete against the likes of the recently launch H’ness CB350 from Honda, Jawa, and Benelli Imperiale 400.
To begin with, the Meteor 350 inherits its name from a Royal Enfield motorcycle that was launched at the end of 1952. Since it takes over from where the Thunderbird 350 had left, it has been built on a brand new platform and a better technology.
EXTERIOR & STYLING The top-of-the-line Supernova comes in blue coloured fuel tank with matching body parts. The tank has a black colour at the base. It has smart ‘Royal Enfield’ badging on either side. It has a choice of premium split seats and a windscreen. The seats are well cushioned and comfortable and the pillion rider gets smart looking grab rails and a comfortable backrest. There is a generous spread of black colour around the wheel rims, in and around the engine, while the latter has machined fins. The bike gets chrome handlebars and exhaust. All editions are fitted with alloy wheels and tubeless tyres as standard. The Meteor 350 headlamp which is round in shape has LED DRLs but is halogen. The rear light is all LED. They give a retro-classic look. Handlebar controls and switchgear are of premium quality. The switches too are easy to operate and are made of good material. The new instrument cluster in the Meteor 350 combines an analogue speedometer and an LCD display for essentials such as gear indicator, fuel gauge, clock and trip meter.

Making its debut on the Meteor 350 is the new TBT (Turn-By-Turn) navigation pod, known as the Royal Enfield Tripper, a highly focused navigation display device for real time directions, built with Google Maps Platform. The Tripper displays the best route to reach a destination using Google Maps’ two-wheeler navigation, a first for any Indian made motorcycle. It is paired via the Royal Enfield App to the rider’s smartphone. A USB port is discreetly mounted below the handlebars to enable charging on the go. Since the port is below the handle bar, it’s not easily accessible and plugging and unplugging the charging wire can be a tedious affair. Ideally I would suggest people to fix an additional cable with male– female USB lead and clamp it on the handlebar for easy access and fixing of the charging wire.

WHEELZ & ROADZ A riding experience ENGINE & PERFORMANCE For starters, the legendary kick lever of the motorcycle has been done away with. The modern day rider now has to be content with a start switch on the handlebar. It is a kill switch which doubles up as a start switch also. The moment you start the machine, you realise the iconic thump of the engine remains Royal Enfield. Thankfully, all those who have got so used to the legendary thump can heave a sigh of relief. And what comes as a very pleasant surprise is the refinement of the engine. It is so smooth and good. There is no more rattling or vibration that was always associated with some of the RE bikes of this size. All this has been achieved by a balancer shaft. You can also call it the balance shaft. Simply put, these balance shafts are used in piston engines to reduce vibration by cancelling out unbalanced dynamic forces. I found the gear changes came very easy on the bike and any aberration of the past that saw rough gear changes, has been smoothened out. The throttle response, I felt was very accurate in the sense the acceleration came very strong and linear. The new engine has a 5-speed gearbox, with fifth gear being an overdrive, which is ideal for economical highway cruising. The Meteor 350 twin downtube spline frame ensures that your ride is very confident and planted to the surface, whether you are on the straight highway or one of those winding roads. It comes with 41mm forks with 130mm of travel and twin tube emulsion shock absorbers with 6-step adjustable preload at the rear. For the cruiser experience, the foot pegs are forward-mounted, with a heel and toe gearshift.
VERDICT I would say that with the Meteor 350, Royal Enfield has raised its bar in terms of quality and technology, thereby further strengthening its position in the Indian cruiser market as well as that of the globe. The Meteor 350 continues with the legendary Royal Enfield thumping journey.

and Jawas of the world these are high tech, high performance motorcycles. While the KTM 250 Duke (the engine powering the Vitpilen and Svartpilen are sourced from that of KTM 250 Duke) is more of a sporty kind of bike, these are meant for young urban riders who have a style of their own. Interestingly, the Vitpilen 250 and Svartpilen 250 models are only made and sold in India. In around 30 countries where the Husqvarna is sold, only the 401 and 701 models are available. Another interesting thing about these bikes is its pricing. It is available around Rs 20,000 less than the 250 Duke at Rs 1,85,000 approximately. Internationally, Husqvarna products, whether they are the 401 or 701 models, they are more expensive than KTM products. An exception has been made in India so as to attract customers towards the Husqvarna brand. These are introductory prices, I am assuming.
EXTERIOR & STYING When it comes to its design, it’s very minimalistic and sleek. The twin bikes are built on lightweight split trellis frame and the rest you see are all made of plastic. On the fuel tank you get a smart company logo. Both the bikes get a 3d logo and name, and if you look minutely you get to see the company logo stamped at one end of the textured seat. The bikes get a neo-classic headlamp and a distinct LED rear light with LED indicators. The Svartpilen 250 has a more rugged design with an upright stance. It comes with dual purpose tyres and is capable of taking both on and wee bit of offroad journeys. The Vitpilen250 has a sportier design, clip on handlebars and a front lean riding position. Interestingly, the Svartpilen and Vitpilen were originally meant to be ridden solo. But in India even though it is a lifestyle bike, we get a 5cm longer seat. And there is a small rear grab rail too. For India and Indians, so as to ensure that people below six feet are also able to ride the bike comfortably, the seat height is smartly adjusted at the rider seating position. While the saddle height for both bikes is 842mm for similar Husvarna models in Europe, the rider seat area is a wee bit lower in India at around 830mm, thus making it easy for those 5’ 7” to 5’ 8” being able to put their feet on the ground. Both the models are 5 kgs lighter than the KTM 250 Duke. While the 250 Duke weighs 171 kg, this is around 166 kg. This has been possible because of lighter rear sub frame, lighter fuel tank, and lighter alloy wheels. Then there are several forged

parts instead of cast ones, which make the Husqvarna lighter. The Svartpilen 250 has a metal tank rack on the plastic fuel tank. Now this rack is meant for metallic tank bags which can be purchased on e-commerce sites for around Rs 2000 to Rs 3000. It looks like a regular bag with shoulder straps, but if you want to place it on the tank, you can use the magnetic side of the bag to fix it on the tank. If you take a closer look at its plastic body, you may get to feel it is kind of flimsy. You wonder whether the plastic will be able to last in our rugged country. The number plate attachment is made of plastic. If this plastic support were to break, it would be very difficult for the number plate to be fixed back, unlike in a metal frame; you can always weld it back or screw it back somehow. Remember, in India a lot of things are fixed in a jugaad fashion, either through welding or through elfi instant glue. On the side of the bike where the gear shifter is located, there is a small key slot just beneath the handle. Once the key is twisted, your seat is unlocked and you can carefully pull it out or slip it out as the case may be to access your tool kit. While the Svartpilen comes with split seats, the pillion seat is the one that opens. In the Vitpilen, since it is a single seat, the entire seat can be removed.
While the colour schemes are a wee bit different on the side panels and near the radiator grille, the bikes have different type of handle bars. The Svartpilen has hydro formed mounting handlebar while the Vitpilen has clip on steel tube handle bar. The round speedometer has digital information pertaining to speed, rpm, low fuel indicator, engine temperature, gear position, odometer, etc and it also has broad black buttons on the speedometer frame which can be adjusted for mode and settings that include trip meter reading, etc.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The 250 cc machines feature a fuel injected, liquid cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke DOHC engine. The engine is mated to a six speed gearbox. In front you get USD fork with WP suspension. It is the same engine powering the KTM 250 Duke. The suspension too is similar to the Duke but has been tweaked for the both the bikes. The fuel tank capacity of the bikes is 9.5 litres and like in any modern bike one must refrain from running it empty as it could damage the fuel pump. Since the motorcycles are almost identical in every which way, it is the handle bar that defines each one’s role. The Svartpilen 250 has an upright stance. It

comes with dual purpose tyres and is capable of taking both on and a wee bit of off-road if you must. The Vitpilen250 has clip on handlebars and since you will have a front lean riding position most of the time, this bike is ideal for the city roads and that too for not very long distances. It’s on the lines of a café racer. One has to be really careful riding this bike around as it has a very low ground clearance as per Indian norms where we have pot holes and speed breakers that defy logic. But one thing I have to admit, you feel very young riding this bike. It is so sporty and so youthful in its riding character and that could be the reason why Bajaj has been calling these lifestyle motorcycles. These bikes have the genes of a café racer, especially the Vitpilen because of its clip on handle bar, the agility of a sport bike and along with the good looks it makes them very attractive. Speed comes naturally to this bike and as you accelerate, it demands quick gear shifts. Since the gear throws are very short, you are able to slot it into 5th and 6th in almost a jiffy. Ideal for college kids and the young at heart, this bike has speed from the word ‘Go’. The Husqvarna bikes can be termed as fleet footed, as they are so full of life. This motorcycle is not meant to take you to your office, rather it is meant to take you to your La La land. You get what I mean?
