P. THARYAN My Lord, You have got to see the bigger picture! On December 16, 2015 the Supreme Court of India put a blanket ban on sale of all diesel vehicles till March 31, 2016 in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) that have an engine capacity of 2000 cc or above. “Why should a rich man travel in a diesel car and pollute the environment,” a bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur had asked a day before this ruling. Chief Justice Thakur may not have realised that while Mercedes-Benz vehicles may be driven by the rich, it is the middle-class which drives all Mahindra vehicles! A few days later when companies like Toyota, Mahindra and Mercedes appealed to the court against this ban, the Supreme Court refused to roll back its order. “Do your cars emit oxygen?” the same bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur asked a battery of senior counsel appearing for the car manufacturers. I know the Supreme Court is the highest authority of justice in this land and what they say is the final word. But are not the judges and lawyers humans too? Can they not err? Was it not Alexander Pope who in 1711 wrote in his poem “Essay on Criticism”, “To err is human; to forgive, divine”? I am neither a rich man and nor am I on the payroll of any auto company that manufacturers diesel cars with engine capacities more than 2000cc. I am just an automotive writer and I need to put across my points to the Honourable Judges of the Supreme Court. I just want to know, why is it that you have ignored the recent study carried out by IIT-Kanpur on pollution? It says that road dust emerges as the biggest threat to decent air quality levels in Delhi. The study also revealed that road dust, burning of biomass, industrial stacks, and municipal solid waste contributed a greater share in the city’s air pollution, as compared to pollution due to vehicular emission. Particulate matter levels, both PM 2.5 and PM 10, received major contributions from road dust. While 56pc of all PM 10 pollution was due to road dust; around 38pc PM 2.5 pollution was also due to road dust. The study further said that vehicular pollution too contributed 9 to 20pc of the particulate matter pollution. But does that call for banning modern cars that met BS IV emission norms and are way cleaner than cars older than 10 years and more. Come to think of it, everything and everybody emits some form of dangerous gas. The CNG vehicles emit large amounts of NOx, while petrol cars emit large levels of carbon monoxide. Diesel cars emit large amounts of particulate matter. Even living beings emit unwanted gases. So what all do we ban in this land? WHAT ARE THE REPERCUSSIONS OF THE SUPREME COURT BAN? The Indian automobile industry is the backbone of the Indian economy. I recently learnt that the dealerships of a leading car manufacturer in India employed more than 50,000 people. You can now imagine how many people, directly and indirectly, are employed in the Indian automobile industry. And if one were to take into account the people employed in the ancillary industry, the count would run into millions. The recent Supreme Court ban has definitely affected the sales of companies like Mercedes-Benz India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota, General Motors India etc. What have these companies done wrong? They were only making cars according to a set of rules laid down by the government. They were merely following the rules of the land in pursuing their business. Now coming back to pollution, I have lived in the Delhi for most of my life. There are several factors contributing to pollution in this city: 1.
Dust. This dust is caused by hundreds and thousands of illegal sand and gravel being sold across the
6 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2016
www.motownindia.com
city, the trade controlled by a mafia of sorts. This sand and gravel are dumped on encroached land and sold to all those carrying out illegal construction across the city. Each time the wind blows hard, this sand spreads wide and far. 2.
Illegal car and two wheeler repair shops run all over the city. Without any consideration
for environment, these illegal shops service cars and two wheelers without having adequate means to dispose of rancid oils, damaged or worn out filters etc. Moreover, old and dilapidated cars and two wheelers owned by these garages are dumped in by-lanes and service roads in many localities, leading to congestion and pollution. 3.
Bad and incomplete roads. Why do we allow unauthorised construction to come up in the
middle and sides of roads? These do not allow proper construction of road, service lanes and foot paths. With so much dust and gravel on the roads, how can these so called “vacuum machines” clean the roads? It’s like using your vacuum cleaner on a sandy beach! 4.
Has one noticed the number of unauthorised taxi stands that have come up on footpaths
and service roads? Have you also noticed that many of them are not having proper taxi number plates and rather have “Government of India” stickers on them? Who allows these taxi sheds, along with their toilets to be built on service lanes and road sides? Are they not blocking the smooth flow of traffic and movement? Like all businesses, should they also not be having their own building or shop as their office? 5.
The green lobby seems to be lobbying for all wrong reasons. A tree that is in the middle
of the road or obstructs the construction of a road has to be felled. A stray animal that walks on to the road has to be removed. A stray dog that sinks its teeth into a human has to be exterminated. Unless we have smooth flow of traffic, how can we get rid of congestion and pollution? I know of several incidents where the green activists and animal welfare people have done extreme harm and caused immense harassment to people. Some of them are worse than the sand mafia. 6.
Burning of fields in neighbouring states. This too needs to stop because when the direction
of wind changes, Delhi is affected badly. With due respect to all the courts and governments of the land, I have only one thing to ask them: Do we want the Indian automobile industry to survive? If no, them clamp them down and ask them to shut shop. If yes, then please adopt long term policies that not only encourage the industry but also ensure free flow of traffic. First and foremost, dismantle the green brigade. They are doing more harm than good. Even if we have 100pc electric vehicles running in Delhi and NCR, there would be chaos on the roads. Pollution too will continue. Take the auto industry into confidence and frame a great roadmap that ensures India not only emerges as a clean and green country, but also a progressive one. It is not just about Delhi, why not make our entire nation pollution free? At the 2016 Auto Expo a lot of new cars and two wheelers would be launched. They eventually need to be sold. Banning them would make no sense! www.facebook.com/MotownIndia @MotownIndia

Mahindra back in Delhi NCR with XUV500 & Scorpio There is now reason for Mahindra fans to smile. All those disappointed by the sudden Supreme Court order of December 2015 banning diesel cars with engine capacities more than 2000cc in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), have now plenty of reasons to cheer. Their favourite vehicles like the XUV500 and the Scorpio are back. Mahindra & Mahindra has announced the launch of its new mHawk 1.99 litre diesel engine. This engine would power the New

Generation Scorpio as well as the New Age XUV500. It would be available for customers within the Delhi and NCR to begin with, said a press release issued by the company. . The new 1.99 litre engine will power the New Generation Scorpio and will deliver 120 bhp while for the New Age XUV500, it will deliver 140 bhp. It may be recalled that the abrupt Supreme Court decision had come as a shocker to several car manufacturers like Mercedes-
Benz India, Toyota, General Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra. Mahindras were severely affected by the ban as many of their best sellers like the XUV500, the Scorpio, Thar, Bolero etc were powered by diesel engines more than 2000cc in capacity. Only the TUV300 was available for sale in Delhi NCR. Some of the shock was contained after the company launched a smart hatch back on the lines of a compact SUV, the KUV100 with a 1.2 litre mFalcon petrol as well as diesel engine.

DAKAR RALLY 2016
It is Stéphane Peterhansel (Peugeot) and Toby Price (KTM) story, with the two Patronelli Bros. running the show and Marcos at the forefront. The 2012 champion Gerard de Rooy claimed his second Dakar win in the truck category. The 9,000 km extreme rally which took a heavy toll on both machines and drivers, involved the two countries of Argentina and Bolivia. The prologue started on January 2, 2016 in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and then the rally crisscrossed the mighty terrains of the two countries to finish on January 16 in Rosario.

Around 218 vehicles (84 motorcycles, 23 quads, 67 cars and 44 trucks) managed to finish the 2016 edition of the Dakar, which saw Stéphane Peterhansel claim his sixth win in the car category after another six in the motorcycle race for a grand total of twelve. Mister Dakar, the leader of the Peugeot dream team that dominated the race with nine stage wins out of twelve, expanded his palmarès (list of accomplishments in sports; French word) with a symbolic victory that restored the Lion brand to its former glory 26 years after Ari Vatanen’s last win at the wheel of a 405. Nasser Al-Attiyah (Mini) and Giniel de Villiers (Toyota Hilux) completed the podium. Toby Price posted a flawless performance in his second Dakar participation to win the motorcycle category and become the first Dakar champion from Australia. This edition was also a watershed for the category, with five rookies in the final top 10. Meanwhile, the quad race was a classic comeback

ry Team Toby Price (AUS) of Red Bull KTM Facto r 2016 in celebrates at the podium of Rally Daka Rosario, Argentina on January 16th, 2016 of the dunes of Fiambalá on the race, let alone the performances of the Peugeot 2008 DKR after a lacklustre 2015 edition or Stéphane Peterhansel’s supreme dominance. All these factors helped decide the outcome of the 38th edition, which was marked by the ascendancy of the Peugeot buggies, first arrogant, then uncertain, and finally triumphant thanks to the talent of their leader, who won his 12th Dakar! Halfway through the race, the dream team was in the lead with a trident headed by Sébastien Loeb, who eventually floundered on the dunes and the ríos, while Carlos Sainz pushed his car too hard for it to survive the journey to Rosario. In two days, the three-man act gave way to a one-man show with the climax in the stage to La

However, the defending champion got stronger and more aggressive in the second week, capping his trek through Argentina and Bolivia with two stage wins and a silver medal that seemed a pie in the sky when he left Salta after the rest day. The Toyota was unable to threaten the Peugeot any more than the Mini, but four Hilux cars finished in the top 10 thanks to the solid performances of Leeroy Poulter (fifth) and Vladimir Vasilyev (eighth). However, Mini dominated the top 10, where Nasser AlAttiyah was closely followed by top rookie Mikko Hirvonen (fifth), Nani Roma (seventh) and another rising star making his debut, Harry Hunt (tenth).
MOTORCYCLES: PRICE LEADS A WHOLE NEW GENERATION / KTM Not even Stéphane Peterhansel, Marc Coma and Cyril Despres, the most decorated competitors in the history of the Dakar, managed to do what Toby Price did this year —winning the most
prestigious rally raid in the world in his second participation. “It’s an amazing record”, blurted the KTM rider at the finish in Rosario. “To be the first Australian to win the Dakar in all divisions is crazy.” Price built his success on a surprising degree of maturity. The 28-year-old lad read the two weeks of racing like an open book. “I pushed the days I needed to push and I looked after the bike the most in the marathon stages”, he explains. Toby Price made no mistakes in this department. The Australian made the most of a reliable KTM that won its fifteenth Dakar in a row, skilfully avoiding the pitfalls that swallowed his main rivals and seizing the lead just after the rest day. MOTORSPORT failed to reach the finish. The Spaniard was hit by a mechanical near Uyuni, while the Portuguese rider saw his hopes go up in smoke in Fiambalá, also due to engine troubles. Bolivia was also the graveyard of Ruben Faria and Matthias Walkner’s podium ambitions. The Portuguese suffered a broken hand and the Austrian a broken femur. Slovak Štefan Svitko and Chilean Pablo Quintanilla had a better Dakar and escorted Toby Price on the final podium. The 38th Dakar also consecrated a new generation of riders who made their debut this year. Argentinian Kevin Benavides was the South American revelation and finished fourth overall after winning the third stage. Antoine Méo fought Kevin Benavides and Pablo Quintanilla for a podium place for most of the race. However, a heavy fall on the day before the finish in Rosario pushed the five-time enduro world champion down to seventh place overall. The two-time winner of the Enduropale du Touquet, Adrien Van Beveren, also rode strongly and overtook Méo for sixth place in the closing stage. American Ricky Brabec, who flew the flag in the general classification for Honda, and Spaniard Armand Monleón rounded off the top 10.

Marcos Patronelli (ARG) of Yamaha Racing Team races during stage 11 of Rally Dakar 2016 from La Rioja to San Juan, Argentina on January 14, 2016 from the other favourites’ bad luck. After last year’s winner, Rafał Sonik, was forced out of the race by mechanical problems, it was the turn of his predecessor Ignacio Casale to go home with two stages… and a broken collarbone. The pace set by the Patronelli Bros. quickly cleared up any doubts except which of the two would take the trophy in Rosario. The younger brother, Marcos, eventually outgunned Alejandro and overtook him both in the general classification (by just 5′23′) and in the number of overall wins (three to two). but they will leave Rosario with quite an empty bag (three stages for Nikolaev and zero days in the lead). Their inspired and competitive rivals at Iveco and Man put paid to their chances. After 2012, this was the second South American edition to feature just one Kamaz on the podium (Mardeev). At least back then they could say they were bang in the middle of the post-Chagin transition. With the Kamaz trucks found lacking, Gerard de Rooy moved into the lead in stage 8 and never looked back. It is his second win, after the one he took
in 2012, as destiny would have it. The heir, De Rooy, finished with a comfortable margin and three stage wins under his belt. The race was energised by an old acquaintance, cousin Hans Stacey (Man), who won the 2007 edition and the closing stage this year, as well as a surprising Federico Villagra (Iveco), who finished third in his first participation in the truck category. The constructors’ results also reveal a new balance of power in the category: Kamaz only got two trucks in the top 10, compared with Iveco’s four.

TOUGH BLOKE! Report: P. THARYAN / Photography: MOTOWN INDIA
I
t’s perhaps an unwritten rule at Mahindra & Mahindra that when they make a vehicle, it better look tough, it better feel tough and it better ride tough. In short, it better rule the Indian roads. Mahindra & Mahindra, the kings of the Indian SUV world, have only ensured over the years that their DNA never got diluted whatever the size of car they built. With the KUV100 (pronounced KUV one double “Oh”), the inherent Mahindra flavour is very much present in abundance. To be fair, though it’s not big enough a car to be called a compact SUV, you end up calling it one, knowing that it looks muscular and sporty. Personally, I would like to refer to this car as a smart hatch with muscles! But first and foremost, the company has finally got its own petrol engine. That’s “Make in India” at its best. Kudos to the hundreds of engineers at Mahindra & Mahindra who slogged day and night to make this 1.2 litre mFalcon petrol as well as diesel engine. Motown India salutes these heroes! This is a first petrol mill from Mahindra & Mahindra. Clean and strong are the two words best suited to describe this new machine. The petrol and diesel models come in four variants: K2, K4, K6 and K8 each offering more and more features as you go up the ladder. Among the variants there are more offerings. There is a K2+ which is offered with dual airbags. There is a K4+ which is also offered with dual airbags. There is a K6+ which comes with dual airbags and steering mounted controls. The K8, of course is the completely loaded variant. I drove the vehicle on the Mahindra test tack at Chakan in Pune, Maharashtra. The petrol powered car performed beautifully. Making an engine is not the only thing a car manufacturer has to do, he has to mate that to an equally efficient gearbox (in this case a five-speed manual transmission) and then all this needs abundance of support from the suspension, the shape, the interiors, etc. For doing a good job with the KUV100, I give the Mahindras full points. The mFalcon is an all-new engine family. The “K” in KUV100 stands for the ‘kool’ & trendy generation of youth, while UV represents an SUV. The numeric ‘100’ represents the pecking order of the series which comes in below TUV300 and XUV500.

EXTERIOR On the looks front, the KUV100 is a butch looking hatch, and with a wide wheelbase, it provides immense space inside and stands on 12 spoke 14 inches spider alloy wheels. The KUV100 has a sculpted bonnet like the XUV500 and a sculpted rear too with smart roof rails. In fact, the design flow from near the C pillar to the rear is bold and smart. The front and the rear of the vehicle carry bold design elements and the wrap around headlamps in the front seem to taper off all the way to the A pillar. The words “powered by mFalcon” are prominently displayed on this side. The car comes with “follow me home” headlamps and “lead me to vehicle” headlamps. Compared to crossovers in the hatch segment, like the Volkswagen Polo Crossover, the Hyundai i20 Active, the Toyota Etios Cross and the Fiat Avventura, the KUV100 is definitely much more rugged and bolder in it is stance. Even though it does not have major claddings on its sides, the SUV look is not diluted. Then there are the pinched grille, the bulging wheel arches, the sloping roofline, the rear door handles perched high almost in alignment with the C pillar, all of which adds
to the aesthetic appeal of the car. The prominent hood and high beltline make the car look like a trendy urban crossover. The rear spoiler enhances the sporty look of the vehicle. The KUV100 is available in 7 colours of Fiery Orange, Flamboyant Red, Dazzling Silver, Aquamarine, Pearl White, Designer Grey and Midnight Black.
INTERIOR All the stretched wheel base and wide track of the vehicle have led to freeing up a lot of space inside the car. To ensure a lot more space, the car comes with a floating dashboard design in piano black finish which has a sculpted steering with bolsters (adjustable for height but is not telescopic) as well as a dash mounted gear lever and a hand brake. The car comes in both a six-seat configuration as well as a five-seat configuration. The company is offering the car with three seats in front as well as an option of two separate seats in front. The three seats in front

have provision for individual safety belts. The seating position in the car is high, thereby giving it a SUV feel once you are seated inside. I feel that three seats in front have their own set of advantages—more seating space, more practicality when it comes to ingress and egress, besides instilling a great element of romance! There is no better way of cuddling up in front when you have a seat without an arm rest coming in between. Also, if you want, you can fold the front middle seat and that becomes a broad arm rest. There is also massive storage space under the front seats. The rear seats too are quite comfortable because of the flat floor construction of the vehicle. In short it means that the person seated in the middle at the rear can actually sit comfortable because there is no
hunch on the floor. There is also an innovative storage space on the floor board wherein you can stash some valuables if you want. The rear seats are foldable and therefore frees up more boot space. Talking of boot space, there is enough space for bottles and there is also a cooled glove box in the car. The car has mood lights inside that can be changed accordingly. It has a twin pod instrument cluster and an infotainment system with a 3.5inches display screen and four speakers. The system can be synchronised with the Mahindra exclusive Blue Sense App which in turn offers a plethora of services.
PERFORMANCE Designed in-house and engineered at Mahindra’s hi-tech research and development facility, the Mahindra Research Valley at Chennai, the KUV100 is powered by the mFalcon,

an all-new engine family with options of both petrol (mFalcon, G80) and diesel (mFalcon, D75). The 1.2L, 82 bhp, dual VVT three-cylinder petrol engine and the 1.2L 77 bhp turbo-charged three-cylinder diesel engine both deliver high, low-end torque for the perfect SUV performance and an enjoyable drive. The mFalcon G80 is an allaluminium MPFI Petrol Engine which is compact and light weight and meets BS IV emission

norms. It is also future emission protected till BS VI. The mFalcon D75 is a turbocharged CRDe (Common Rail Diesel Engine) which meets BS IV emission norms. This engine is also future emission protected. The 1198cc engine delivers 77 bhp @3750 rpm and a peak torque of 190 Nm @1750-2250 rpm. Both the engines are mated to a manual five-speed transmission. The diesel engine is light primarily because the cylinder heads are made of aluminium and the base out of bi-metallic. While the top end variants
come with Micro Hybrid technology (Start / Stop), the diesel model offers Power and Eco modes. Anti Lock Braking (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) are standard, while the car also comes with Corner Braking Control. The car meets the yet to be announced Indian crash test norms and also comes with pedestrian crash protection feature. We drove both the petrol as well as the diesel cars for a very limited time distance at the Mahindra Chakan plant and found the vehicle very peppy and
stable. At high speeds, it was well grounded and at corners too the car handled well. Of the two, the diesel engine had a lot more pep to it more so because its turbo charged and comes with a good level of torque that peaks early at around 1750 rpm. One thing is for sure, the KUV100 is stable both on and off the beaten path. While it offers the comfort and grace of a car, it also offers the performance and aggressiveness of a compact SUV. That’s why I feel the KUV100 is the smart hatch with muscles. A tough bloke, no doubt! MI

NEW CHEVROLET CRUZE
REJUVENATED! B Report: AAKASH PAUL / Photography: AFSAR BAIG & JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER
ack in 2009 General Motors India brought a magnificent car, the Chevrolet Cruze, that mixed luxury, comfort and technology in the right proportions. Since then it has been a best seller and that is only because over the years the Cruze was treated to subtle facelifts as and when needed. I say subtle because it was already such a great car that not a lot needed to be changed. Recently we got our hands on the 2016 facelift of the Chevrolet Cruze and it looks pretty! When you take a look at the front end of the car, you will notice some subtle changes. It looks more rounded than before. You have the signature chrome finished
dual port radiator grille. Between the grilles is the golden Chevrolet bowtie that is now a tad bit smaller than it was in the last iteration of the Cruze. The headlamps come in dual bezel design and just below them are projector fog lamps that now come with LED daytime running lights (DRLs). Apart from that there is not much to note at the front. You get chrome strips on the door handles and the ORVMs are embedded with turn indicators. The rear remains more or less the same and we have no problem with that since it looks great with the twin-port tail lamps and its chiseled looks. The 15 inch alloys also have also seen some changes in styling. Get inside the car and you will instantly appreciate the beauty of the Corvette inspired dual

cockpit design. The premium jet black interiors give you a feeling of luxury and class, just like when you wear an expensive black ‘Suit & Tie’. The car comes with a start/stop button and you get steering mounted controls for the infotainment system. Speaking of the infotainment system, you now get an all-new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with support for CD, Aux. USB and Radio supported by a premium sound system. You can also connect your mobile to the infotainment system using Bluetooth. So basically you get a nice little place of your own that is comfortable and filled with quality music. To add the icing to the cake, you get a sweet sunroof! The seats are comfortable and the side bolsters keep you padded and in place. The front

row passengers won’t have to fight for leg room and head room, there is enough of that. The driver seat is a 6 way power adjustable so finding a sweet spot is easy. Although sadly the same cannot be said for the rear. The low floor combined with an inclined roof can make it slightly less comfortable for anyone above 5’ 10”. The presence of a tunnel in the middle means inconvenience for a third passenger seated at the back. The boot space is enough to carry enough stuff for your weekend picnic. There is also a compartment beneath the boot area that holds a spare wheel. The Cruze also has many pockets and cubby holes to hold any small belongings of yours. In terms of safety there are 4 airbags in total, 2 at the front and 2 on
the side. Other features include a rain sensing wipers and a passive entry/ passive start (PEPS) which enables operation of central locking system, anti-theft alarm system without use of mechanical key. beauty. It still roars and runs like a beast. The variable geometry turbo charged engine with common rail direct injection produces 164bhp @ 3800rpm and a lovely torque of 360Nm @ 2000rpm. In simple terms, prepare to be thrown back into your seat if you floor the throttle. The engine is mated to a Gen2, 6-speed automatic transmission that makes the ride a breeze. The only hassle here is that when you floor the throttle, it takes about 3 seconds for the expected response to kick in. But fear not, for you can shift the car into manual mode by simple putting the gear to the left. This makes the throttle response more accurate. The suspension
is on the softer side so expect a comfy ride over broken roads. But you have to be a little careful not to damage the underbody. I felt confident while braking due to the presence of Disc brakes in all four wheels and ABS. Cruise Control and automatic headlamps add to your driving comfort. Reaching high speeds is not a problem with this car and the stability is commendable. Taking sharp right turns can be a bit frustrating as the A pillar is thick enough to give you a blind spot and you have to be careful. While this new facelift of Cruze might not look as Camaro-ish as the North American release, it still looks great! MI

primary one being a shift-fly Terrain management System that maximises traction and stability to effortlessly stay in control. But unfortunately, the one we got our hands on (the 2.2 litre, 6-speed 4X2 automatic version) did not have this great feature. But that did not deter us from
having our share of fun with the vehicle. But before that, let me very briefly tell you what the 3.2 litre fully automatic has to offer. It has a terrain management system wherein you turn on the sand mode and you get increased accelerator sensitivity and aggressive wheel spin. The Snow/

It can be opened both with your car key and with a button near the driver’s side. Another press of a button on the tailgate ensures that it is closed. The vehicle has a 800mm water wading ability and a ground clearance of 225 mm. This is typically a driver’s car. The SUV had seven leather upholstered seats with 8-way power driver’s seat with lumber. It comes with Ford’s advanced in-car connectivity system SYNC 2, featuring an eight-inch colour display. The Sync feature allows you to call your family and friends just by saying the name. You can ask it to read incoming tests too.
Music is also at the tip of your fingers. Its TFT touchscreen, two USB ports and SD card slots make it easy to view and use multiple devices, including videos when parked. It’s only in the case of the top end that the electric power fold 3rd row seat folds flat for a stable surface. We
had to do that manually to create extra space. With all rear seats folded, the all-new Ford Endeavour can hold up to 2010 litres of cargo. The 2.2 litre TDCI diesel engine produces 158bhp @3200rpm and a peak torque of 385Nm @1600– 2500 rpm. The 2.2 litre automatic transmission model will deliver a fuel economy of 12.62kmpl. We shall have a detailed report on the 3.2 litre fully loaded automatic transmission model soon. All we can say is that, if you want to have fun with this model, just turn off the traction control and toss it around on some rough terrain. reatness Starts, when you don’t stop; That’s the way Audi describes the new Audi Q7. With the Audi Q7 you feel the essence of greatness the moment you step into its luxurious interiors and navigate through the pot holed, terribly built roads of ours. It’s then you realise the mighty level of comfort this SUV has to offer to its owners and passengers. The new Audi Q7 sports utility vehicle was launched in the country early December 2015. The vehicle is powered by a 45 TDI (3.0 TDI) diesel engine that delivers 249 bhp and 600 Nm of peak torque. With this new model becoming 325 kgs lighter than its predecessor, it means the vehicle can accelerate faster, move faster and deliver a better fuel efficiency, thereby ensuring that its environment friendly too. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.1 seconds. Fuel efficiency is improved in this new vehicle at 14.75 kmpl. Let me first describe the exteriors and interiors of this brilliant car for you.
EXTERIOR The new Q7 comes with a moulded single frame grille. It has horizontal struts in aluminium with the Audi rings on it. The new Audi Q7 has smart Matrix LED headlights featuring double- arrow graphics and intense wheel arches. The exhaust tailpipes at the rear have a dual-branch design, with rectangular trims, adding to the smart looks of the vehicle. While the window slot trims are in aluminium, the outer B and C pillar trims are in gloss black. The car also comes with a panoramic glass sunroof that has two sections. It has an electrical activation to raise and open the front glass section. The Matrix LED headlights are no ordinary lights because each headlight divides its high beam into 30 individual light- emitting diodes paired with three reflectors. The control unit, which communicates with the camera on the rear view mirror, can switch the individual diodes off and on and dim them in 64 stages as needed. The intelligent cornering light is created by a shift in the light centre position. With millions of different resultant beam patterns, the Matrix LED headlights always superbly light up the road, without dazzling other road users, claims the company. The headlight range is automatically increased when the speed of the vehicle crosses approximately 110kmph. Sensors control the automatic lights-on function and the automatic windscreen wiper function, including coming home/ leaving home function. It also controls the delayed switching-off/automatic switching-on of the main headlights, rear and number plate lights when parking/opening the vehicle. Like I mentioned earlier, electronics at its best! Overall the car looks quite appealing with its quality paint finish and the dark grey coloured sections that warp itself around the car in the form of the front and rear bumper sections, sill trims and wheel arch trims. The door trim strips have the

quattro embossing and under body protection both in front and rear are in a dull silver finish. The cast aluminium wheels in 5-spoke star design enhance the looks of the car.
INTERIOR It’s when you step inside the large vehicle you realise how luxurious and comfortable it is. The cabin is spacious and the seats are made of high quality cricket leather. The company claims that the leather is extremely hard wearing and durable, tanned without the use of chromium. The front seats are electrically adjustable which also includes a memory function for the driver seat. Whether you like it or not, sometimes the driver has all the fun! There is electric adjustment of seat height, fore/aft position, seat and backrest angle as well as electric 4-way lumbar support. There are also two pre-sets for the electrically adjustable driver seat, the exterior mirrors and the electric steering wheel adjustment. The car comes with a leather steering wheel in 4-spoke design with multifunction plus and shift paddles with 14 multifunction keys for operating the available infotainment features. The steering wheel can be adjusted for height and reach. The gear selector knob is also in leather, with the colour
coordinated with the selected vehicle interior colour and to match the dashboard top side The fully digital 12.3 inch instrument cluster displays shows multiple information as per the driver requirement such as vehicle speed/engine speed, map representation, radio/ media information etc. The Audi virtual cockpit is operated via the multifunction steering wheel. The sound quality in the cabin is amazing because of the Bose 3D Sound System with 19 loudspeakers including 3D Sound loudspeaker, centre speaker and subwoofer, 15-channel amplifier with a total output of 558 watts.

Additional loudspeakers have been fitted in the A-pillar. All these together create a uniquely authentic 3D surround experience in the vehicle. Also, through the Bluetooth interface one can make hands-free calls in the vehicle using the microphone. Bluetooth audio streaming too is possible from your mobile phone. As in the company’s flagship A8 L sedan, the inlays come in two parts, with the different materials forming effective contrastsUpper inlay in brushed aluminium and lower in walnut terra brown. A newly developed luxurious four-zone climate control system is standard on the all-new Audi Q7 with the temperature display integrated in the rotary control. While the front has a centre armrest, the rear seats have at the centre armrest with two cup holders. The rear seats in second row allow individual manual adjustment of fore/aft position at a ratio of 35: 30:35 as well as the backrest angle. The 2 seats in the third row include additional double-folding mechanism. The new Audi Q7 has an electric luggage compartment with a cover that can be electrically opened and closed. This can be done via a button on the vehicle key or in the driver door or by means of the soft-touch button in the luggage
compartment lid handle recess. The lid can be closed via a button on the inside of the luggage compartment lid, the button in the driver door or the optional convenience key (long press). The height of the vehicle can be adjusted for comfortable loading / unloading of the luggage. Luggage space inside the car can be increased by electrically folding third row seats. A massive luggage space of 1,955 litres can be obtained by folding the second row seats which splits in the ratio of 35:30:35. But we noticed that the moment you bolt a spare wheel at the rear portion of the luggage compartment, then it’s not possible to open up the third row seats. So it’s a choice between a spare wheel or the third row seats. Knowing the rich who buy the Audi Q7, we know they keep their families small and trim to enjoy the good things in life! Speaking of storage, there are storage compartments in the front and rear door trims for for bottles up to 1 litre, storage nets on the reverse of the front seat backrests, storage compartment in the centre console, besides the usual glove compartment on the front-passenger side and two cup holders on the centre console and one 12V socket. If the headlights of the car are

impressive, so are the interior lighting in LED technology. There are lights in the front and the rear and one for the optional 3rd row of seats, including capacitive reading lights in front, reflected lighting on centre console, vanity lights, front and rear footwell lighting, glove compartment light, front and rear entry lights, front and rear inside door handles, active door warning lights, luggage compartment lights to the right and left as well as courtesy lighting in the luggage compartment lid for easy loading and unloading. In addition to this lighting, there is also contour lighting for dashboard and front and rear door trim, lighting of front and rear door pockets with capacitive activation (contactless light control) and front and rear ambient door lighting Air-conditioning too has a touch of luxury in the new Audi Q7. The car boasts of a 4-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning. Everything in the cabin, even the footwell temperature in front can be adjusted to one’s liking.
PERFORMANCE The Audi Q7 is a large vehicle but the moment you get behind its wheel, it’s like you are driving a car that is so easy to handle and the massive girth does not intimidate

you. This is primarily because of the massive engineering embedded in its chassis, engine, gear box and suspension, all weaved together with loads of electronics. The self-locking centre differential – the heart of the quattro all-wheel drive system – is integrated into the housing of the eight-speed tiptronic transmission. The design with centre differential and front axle drive integrated in the tiptronic transmission is significantly more compact and lighter in weight than the predecessor model. One could feel while driving that the Q7 felt quite nimble even in some of the most off-road conditions. Through the Audi Drive Select one can opt for any one of these modes: Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Individual and Off-road. In conjunction with adaptive air suspension the All-road and lift/off road mode is added. The all-new Audi Q7 displays the tilt angle of the car when in the all road or lift/off road. When we drove the vehicle on some hard off-road terrains, the lift-off mode came quite handy, ensuring that the underbelly did not rub against the large mounds of mud and stones. The air suspension made it feel as though
we were floating on seated on bales of cotton. Thanks to the Quattro technology, there was permanent distribution of the drive force to all four wheels. There was nothing much we had to do, except keep our hands on the steering wheel and our eyes on the uneven roads. Since the rear axle is variably controlled via a self-locking centre differential, traction to the wheels was perfect and handling an absolute joy. Later as we drove the car on smooth roads and purposely took those sharp corners we realised that the wheel-selective torque controls mean so much to the over stability of the car. The centre differential distributes the drive force between the axles as needed. The electronically controlled air suspension including tilt angle display acts separately on each of the 4 wheels, providing for balanced handling characteristics. The quick-shifting eight speed tiptronic transmission, along with the quattro drive, allowed the car
to perform superbly on both the rough and smooth terrains we briefly drove on. This new Audi Q7 is also equipped with assistance systems like the auto park assist and 360 degree surround camera with bird’s eye view. Hold assist stops the vehicle over an indefinite period of time both in the uphill and downhill gradients. It also has a tyre pressure monitoring system. Air pressures and temperatures of the individual tyres are displayed in the MMI system whilst driving. Cruise control features comes handy at speeds from about 30 to 250 kmph and above. Ideally, if you have to unhindered road before you, then with the Audi Q7 you can simply move on.... MI

ost Indians wake up to a world of chaos and anarchy every day. We follow a daily grind and leave the comfort of our homes to battle our way to work. But what if the battle were to be made easier? What if comfort and convenience can make the daily commute a more pleasurable experience? Maruti Suzuki recently launched
their most popular sedan the Swift Dzire with their Auto Gear Shift technology. The automatic transmission of the car promises to bring in a more pleasurable driving experience. We put it to the Motown Test to find out how good this AMT version really is. The Dzire AMT comes with the same 1248cc litre diesel mill which the other versions of the car have. The engine produces 74bhp@4000rpm and 190Nm of torque at 2000rpm. There are no

doubts that this diesel mill is one of the peppiest engines in the segment but what happens when you mate it with an automatic transmission manufactured by Magnetti Marelli? Well to be honest it makes driving in city traffic a hell’uva lot easier. The petrol version of the car was already available with an automatic gearbox but that was a 4-speed box. The Dzire diesel ZDI gets a brand new 5-speed gearbox which we found to be more than capable.
When the gear is in Drive mode the transmission shifts automatically depending on your throttle inputs. If demanded of it the gearbox will rev all the way up to 4500rpm. But unlike a petrol motor the turbo lag is quite prominent on the diesel powered cars. The turbo kicks in just about 2100rpm after which a surge of power gives you enough momentum to pull ahead of traffic. In Drive mode we felt that while the car was up-shifting it

did feel a little rocky, like a boat over troubled waters. There was a definite lag before the turbo kicked in and every time the transmission up-shifted we would have to wait for 2-3 seconds after which the turbo kicked in. If you don’t mind that swaying motion then this is probably the best automatic sedan to buy in the segment. If we stick the gear into manual however it’s a different game altogether. The gearbox will let you redline and go beyond if required. You can let the engine rev all the way up to 5200rpm and the shifts feel smoother. The turbo lag also does not feel so obvious and the drive is more enjoyable with all 74 horses at your disposal. The 60kmph mark comes at just a few seconds over 5.3 seconds and by no means do you feel left wanting for power

while overtaking city traffic. The AMT version of the Dzire is a tad bit expensive when compared to the manual ZDI version. But if it is comfort and convenience that you want along with a great mix of build quality, technology and features, then Rs. 8.39 lakh is just a number. MI

RIDING WILD! MAHINDRA GUSTO 125
FIRST RIDE
I
Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER / Photography: AFSAR BAIG
woke up to a rather lazy morning in the beautiful lake city of Lavasa. Having stayed in Lavasa before it became my customary routine to first go and open the window blinds. Every time I end up doing this I just sit and stare into the endless abyss of the valley in which the lake lies. Since my childhood I have always been fascinated by the unknown and it beckons me like the song bird to a bard. For me living in a metro and working with a corporate house does not present too many opportunities for that little child in me to have his day. But today was that day where I could let the explorer out and go do something wild. When I hear the word Mahindra the first thing that comes to my mind is off-road adventure. And today I would be testing a Mahindra vehicle. But this is no ordinary Mahindra vehicle mind you! It is the big boy’s Gusto from Mahindra Two Wheelers. I say big boy because it has a bigger engine which produces more power and torque. To be specific the new Gusto is now available with a 125cc engine. Now everyone would ask me this is just a scooter... what the hell can you explore with a scooter? My response is quite simple; The last time around I had a go at the 110cc Gusto I took it 3kms into the dunes of the Desert at Khimsar, Rajasthan. Not only did the scooter manage to get me there it also ferried me out hassle free. So I had
planned to definitely push the Gusto – 125 to its limits and see what I can get out of it. Now the Gusto 125 has a 124.6cc engine which produces 8.5bhp and a peak torque of 10Nm. All of these numbers can be compared and co related with its competitors but by Jove this scooter has something the others will never have - The Mahindra off-road DNA. Mahindra has been manufacturing SUVs since ages and they have perfected the art of making vehicles meant for India. This DNA has definitely trickled down into their two-wheeler division. We tested the 125cc Mahindra Gusto in Lavasa which offered a variety of terrain. In and around the city we got some really smooth roads and as we moved away we got some really bad roads as well. But that was not really what I had in mind to test this scooter on. So I went in search of something that is worthy to wear the off-road badge for our test. Alas we hit a spot where we could take the Gusto down to the dried up lake bed. The Gusto 125 is supported by a telescopic air suspension in the front and a coil type hydraulic suspension in the rear. The interesting part to note is we were riding over really bad terrain; there was no tarmac just fine sand, rocks, pebbles and sudden inclines. Apart from holding its own this scooter managed to provide quite a comfy ride. The saddle is broad enough to fit a large adult (me) and the cushion kept my rear

cheeks quite cosy. The scooter rides on 90/ 90 R-12 tubeless tyres in the front and rear. We did a lot of panic breaking on and off the tarmac.... the tyres squealed and kicked up dust but not once did I get the feeling that the brakes did not have enough bite. Another factor to keep in mind while on bad roads (most Indian roads) or off the beaten track is the ground clearance of your vehicle. Now I do admit wedging an SUV over a rock can be a lot trickier than having the same happen with a scooter but one can land in a much bitter pickle if you were riding at high speeds on off-road tracks or bad roads. The ground
clearance on the Gusto 125 is 165mm which is quite decent by my standards considering that not once did I hit the underbody despite managing a few jumps, riding over rocks bigger than my fist or through deep crevasses created by the water current. Now coming back to how fast you can go on the Gusto 125... Well it is not speed which you will buy this one for. Yes it is fast there is no doubt about it but the Gusto will pick up speed once it clears 6000rpm post its mid range where the meat of the power band lies. So on road I was able to reach 75kmph in a matter of seconds which should be sufficient to keep up and over take in city traffic. The scooter does feel out of breath
42 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2016
past the 75kmph mark but then again “it isn’t built to do that”. The scooter also offers 10Nm of torque at 5500rpm and the VX variant (top end) which I rode weighs a 123kgs. That plus the added weight of 86kgs of pure soulful human being (me) ended up in a total of plus 200kgs. But this was not a problem for this gutsy scooter. It climbed up steep inclines both off and on the road with ease and a determined self to not let it give up. I also found that the ride of the Gusto 125 was quite a sturdy one. It is not easily shaken up and feels well built. Going wild came so easy! Now that I knew it was more than capable for Indian roads I settled to find out just how
convenient this scooter was. The first thumbs up it got was for the small pocket it has up front to hold your mobile phone and other pocket sized things. Apart from that it has a baggage hook and a roomy under seat storage area. But what really sets this one apart is the thinking gone behind its making. A height adjustable seat for starters. Man, woman and kids all have different heights and the seat can be adjusted for each user according to their preference. The upper seating position is measured in at 770mm while the lowest position is at 735mm. The second distinctive feature on this scooter is the LED DRLs which have a follow me and guide me function. They may not make sense now but in crowded parking spaces they can be precious time savers. So to sum it all up I can simply say that if you have driven a Mahindra Thar then this has to be its counterpart in the 125cc scooter segment. It handled every hurdle I threw its way with grace and finesse while ensuring I had a comfy ride. The scooter also comes with new colour options – Orange Rush, Bolt White, Monarch Black and Regal Red. The styling has been tweaked with a chrome plate for the Mahindra logo and chrome accents around the turn indicators. The colour scheme on the scooter also adds spunk and appeal to the offering. We estimate it should be priced around the Rs. 53,000 mark (exshowroom Delhi) which if true would be a steal. MI

MAHINDRA ROYAL ESCAPE
A NEW YEAR’S BASH ON THE DUNES Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER / Photography: AAKASH PAUL & JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER
I
t was seven in the morning on the 27th of December, 2015. I could barely see the sun through the haze and smoke surrounding the busy city of Delhi. A chilly breeze had set in the night before. We were about to set off on an expedition to the wild untamed Thar desert. The allocation of vehicles was taken care on the night before and I was handed over the keys to the sporty and
handsome looking Mahindra Thar. I slotted the key and tweaked it a bit as the 2.5 litre diesel mill roared to life and we were off on an adventure. But this was no ordinary adventure! It was organised by a group of people who like doing things differently and love it when you break the monotony of a daily grind. They are the people of Mahindra Adventure. The whole idea of the expedition was to conquer the unforgiving

terrain of the Thar Desert and soak in the royal hospitality of Rajasthan. As we pushed off from the Hyatt Regency in Gurgaon the convoy took shape. More than 30 Mahindra 4X4 SUVs were running in a single file and it looked nothing less than a pride of lions charging through the highways of Rajasthan. Our destination for the day was the Gajner Palace which is situated at the outskirts of Bikaner in Rajasthan. The Palace was originally the hunting lodge for
the Maharaja of Bikaner and would be our boarding and lodging for the night.
THE JOURNEY TO GAJNER The journey to Gajner was about 453 kms and was quite a scenic one. A few kilometres into NH 8 and we took a right turn for Rewari. This is where the real test began. The roads were narrow and there was plenty of city traffic around to breach the convoy.
www.motownindia.com

Sticking together or maintaining visual contact with each other was essential to ensure no member of the convoy lost his or her way. But even if they did every vehicle was equipped with a CB radio which could be used to communicate with the convoy. A majority of the members in the convoy did not know each other but that did not limit the chatter over the radio. The 2015 edition of the Royal Escape consisted of a varied variety of Mahindra vehicles. One
www.motownindia.com
could see the top end XUV 500, Scorpio, Thar and the Scorpio Getaway. Even the participants who had gathered for this year’s Royal Escape came from diverse backgrounds from all across the nation but were all united under the Mahindra banner. The thing that set this convoy apart from any other was the uniform Mahindra Adventure colours on every vehicle. Like any convoy moving through traffic or populated areas this one also attracted a
lot of attention. It was a different experience altogether. We even had a couple of locals come up and ask which minister is travelling in the convoy. This just goes to show the Royal status one dons while signing up for a Mahindra Adventure. Close to night fall the air was getting cooler and we could feel the chill setting in. Moving through lesser travelled paths we weaved through the back roads of Rajasthan. The convoy stretched
over 3 kms and looked like a long snake in hues of white and orange. Finally the vehicles in front started kicking up some dust and a cheerful voice over the radio announced we have arrived... we could see the Gajner Palace. Through the looming dust and dark shrouds of the night I saw it standing in all its magnificence, the Palace which played home to the Royal Rajputs of yore. The Gajner palace is built with Red Sand Stone and was lit up by

light shades of yellow. We were welcomed by a traditional song and dance by the local folk as we sat around a fire. The rooms at the Palace are also something to look forward to with ardour. The choicest of luxuries adorn the historic suits which overlook the Gajner Lake and palace grounds. After some fine dining of traditional Rajasthani cuisine we all retired to our rooms for the night.
DESTINATION OSIAN The morning came before I had anticipated and after a hearty breakfast we were once again on the move. The next destination for the day was Osian, an ancient oasis town smack in the middle of Rajasthan. As all vehicles in the convoy bunched up on the highway I could sense the fervour amidst the group. The next stop was almost 212 kms away and it was a place we only read about in magazines or see in the movies. The desert town of Osian possessed a certain mystery about it. Majorly because
to reach our campsite we needed to go off road and in the Desert off road would mean through the dunes. The roads to Osian were stunning and my photographer wanted to stop at almost every corner because he saw something spectacular to shoot. We came across herds of sheep flocking the roads and wild camels crossing over to greener pastures. By five in the evening we were full steam through the barren straights of the Thar Desert with nothing but dunes and shrubs in sight for miles. As the sun began to set behind the dunes our convoy moved off road. A sharp voice over the radio called out “ 4-High...4-High. All members of the convoy were instructed to shift their vehicles to four wheel drive in High mode. Technically put, you deploy a 4 wheel drive high mode when you

are in a non tarmac stretch like sand and you also need speed. High and Low 4 wheel drive settings are basically transfer case settings that help the vehicle push though stick conditions like snow, ice, steep gradients etc. The 4WD Low is deployed when the
situation worsens and you need to travel a lot slower. Once all were set in 4-High we embarked on our affair with the dunes of the Thar Desert. The Thar Desert is not a little boys sand box and any wrong move can result in injury to man

and machine. Slowly but surely we crawled our way through the winding path chosen by our Leader Raj Kapoor. The tyres were clawing away at the sand while the SUVs brushed past shrubs and bushes and then we saw our destination for the night. The facade looked more like the ruins of an old fort abandoned in the desert. It just took us a bit of time to bring the ruins back to life by the cheer and celebrations that followed. As soon as we moved through the impressive doorway and looked around for our rooms I realised it was not a room but a tent. The set up was quite impressive and I could already begin establishing a connection with the Rajasthani culture. I pulled a chair and dug my feet into the warm desert sand. It was not long before night was upon us and with it came the light from a million stars which adorned the desert sky. Soon we were called to assemble for our night expedition. All vehicles lined
www.motownindia.com
up and began rolling out of the camp sight. The destination was unknown and all I knew was we were rolling in the deep dunes of the Thar. After driving for about 20 kms, a Scorpio with the call sign Adventure No.4 got stuck in deep sand. We waited for 10 minutes and were then directed to move on. Slowly we moved through the barren terrain and landed up at a fork in the trail. The first half of the convoy had moved on and one of the media vehicles was leading the second half. We took the left fork and began moving at a steady pace to catch up with the rest of the convoy. Almost half an hour had past and there was no trace of the first half of the convoy. We broke radio silence and called for
the lead vehicle. All we received was a broken copy. We had lost our way and had come too far into the wilderness to back track to the first fork on the trail. The second half of the convoy halted in a panic and soon a few of us were out looking for a solution. It was getting darker by the minute and driving through the dust was not getting easier. Finally Bobbie Bhogal, one of the organising members stepped up and began leading the convoy. Maintaining a safe pace he led the convoy through the dirt track and back into the dunes. There was no set route, no comms with the main convoy and just the low beams from the Mahindra SUVs to guide us through the desert.
A few minutes in we hit really deep sand and Bobbie’s Scorpio got beached. “4-Low, 4-Low” he barked over the radio. It was too late, most of the vehicles which had hit deep sand were stuck or on the brink of digging themselves a nice hole. I turned off the ignition and stepped out to see what the commotion was all about. Forget driving, walking through this sand was a task in itself. After pushing and shaking Bobbie’s Scorpio free he slowly moved out to a clearer patch and began guiding the other members out to safer territory. I hopped on to my Thar and shifted the gears to 4-Low. Gently pressing the accelerator I gained momentum and climbed up the dune. At the summit of the dune I

FEATURES & TRAVEL saw a majestic sight. Like an Oasis in the desert sitting in a valley of dunes I saw fires burning, a tent and a few locals scurrying about. We had reached the rendezvous point. This is where the convoy was to halt. I shifted to the third gear and made my way to the site. Only the second half of the convoy had arrived. I got out of my Thar and inspected the vehicle for damages. A minute or so later an XUV 500 pulled up beside me and brought with it a God awful stench of a burnt clutch plate. The desert was brought to life that night with fires surrounding the site and traditional folk music
sung by local artists. It was reminiscent of an age gone by where men were nomadic and all that mattered was the next meal. We returned late to our tents that night as people engaged in conversations and some just chose to sit and star gaze.
DUNE BASHING AND DRIVING TOWARDS JAISALMER I woke up early the next morning to watch the sun light up the dunes once again. We were heading out to the desert to test out the vehicles and our skills behind the wheel. Now dune

bashing does not come naturally to most people. It is an art in itself where one needs to perfect the level of acceleration and respond to the feedback coming from the vehicle. Shifting on the dunes is also a challenge as you can break the momentum and the sheer weight of these vehicles will prevent them from rolling forward. We hit the dunes at around nine in the morning and most members of the convoy had perfected the art of dune bashing within minutes. Over and around the dunes we went, each trying something different and a few did end up stuck in deep sand but

were eventually winched out by other vehicles. The dunes near Osian are majestic, for miles all you can see is the Thar Desert and a little greenery here and there. Every dune is an obstacle in itself and has a different technique to conquering it. So for hours we tried our hands at the different challenges presented by the dunes and at the end of it all emerged proudly out of the dunes unscathed and intact. Despite a few vehicles getting beached in the sand and their drivers having bruised egos we emerged out of the dunes victorious and had nearly mastered the art of driving

in the desert. We headed back to our campsite to gather up our belongings and wash of all the dust in our shoes and places where the sun doesn’t shine. An hour later we were on tarmac headed towards Jaisalmer. The day’s run was about 237 kms and we wanted to make good time to reach Jaisalmer before sun down. About mid way through our journey I realised that my Thar was running on one fourth tank of diesel and had to make a sudden stop to refuel. After seeking permission from the convoy leader I broke off at the nearest re-fuelling station. It took me about ten minutes to tank up and hit the
road again in which time I knew the convoy would be miles ahead. All I was getting over the radios were broken copies and I knew we needed to catch up before we hit Jaisalmer. I floored the pedal and began gaining speed. It was at this time that I realised that the Thar had not failed me once. While we were in the dunes it managed to claw its way over every obstacle I threw its way and now on the highway as well we were doing about 145 kmph and it was as stable as a rock. The new generation Thar has a 2498cc CRDe diesel mill which produces 105 bhp @ 3800 rpm and 247 Nm of torque @ 1800-2000 rpm. All
that power and raw toque is what helped me conquer the dunes and achieve a good speed on the highway. In about fifteen minutes I had caught up with the convoy and announced over the radio ‘Media-3 back in formation’. We were a few kilometers outside the city of Jaisalmer when the sun began to set. The sky was unlike anything I had seen in my life. It turned to hues of orange and red as though it were on fire and we all could not help but stop to take pictures. Once we arrived at Jaisalmer we stopped to refuel and then moved on towards the Sam dunes where we would be spending the night. We were

into a world of my own. After a while I felt like the sky was shaking only to realise it was my photographer who was pointing at his watch and saying “boss lets go for dinner I hear they have Lall Maas. After a sumptuous dinner of the Rajasthani delicacy we headed back to our tents to retire

night. The next day was quite a lazy one and we all woke up to quite a dreamy morning. We had till one in the afternoon to relax or go sightseeing so I decided to speak to a few locals and figure out what was worth visiting. After talking to a few people one old man told me there is an abandoned village a few kilometers away by the name
of Kuldhara. So we decided to go and have a look for ourselves. Upon entering the village premises nothing seemed eerie about it but once we headed further into the main corridor of the village it came across as a something very morose had infested the place. The buildings were dilapidated and most of the houses did not have roofs. According to legend the locals of the village left the place in a

hurry after being threatened by a minister of the Jaisalmer court and put a curse upon the village that none shall dwell there. The locals say the place is haunted and spirits exist there. We decided it was best to leave and figure out something more interesting to do so we headed out in search of a place to cool our thirst.
RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR Soon after the convoy was once again in full shape and we

were rolling to Jodhpur. Our nights stay would be at the ITC Welcome Hotel in Jodhpur. The journey to Jodhpur was filled with different sights from hills to army convoys. We even spotted a battle tank being ferried by an army truck. We reached Jodhpur by nightfall and every one settled into their respective rooms to cuddle up in the lap of luxury. The next morning was the final leg of our Journey as we made our way to the humble town of Pushkar. The route chosen was a much more relaxed one as we navigated the back roads of Rajasthan once again at a
steady pace. Incidentally it was also the last day of 2015 and a big celebration had been planned for the New Year. We drove through remote villages and got to see the local lifestyle of Rajasthani folk. Adults and kids alike looked at the convoy with a puzzled expression on their faces. For them this was a sight unlike any other. At around seven in the evening we reached our resort and were given passes for the party which was planned later that night. The whole journey was the highpoint of this adventure and the intricacy which had gone into the planning made all the difference. When I look back at the time we
spent travelling and indulging in the royalty that is Rajasthan I can think of no memory which will rival the time I spent at the Mahindra Adventure Royal Escape 2015-16. We burnt clutches and rubber, we bashed the dunes and met beautiful souls. At the end of the day we sat together, held our glasses high to welcome in the New Year and celebrate our triumph over the terrain over the Thar Desert. The music that played at the stroke of mid night was still echoing in my ears as we parted ways and bid adieu to one another the next day. After all, a Mahindra Adventure Royal Escape is not just music to our ears, it’s also music to our souls! MI

Ranging from distribution of premium riding gear, motorcycle accessories to organising luxury and adventure motorcycle tours across India and Asia(with a fleet of Ducati Scrambler, Harley Iron 883 and Triumph Bonneville), Motoziel aims to provide a total motorcycling experience under one roof. The company launched its inaugural ride “The Rajput Trail” in December 2015. Conceptualised by Biswaroop and Kalyan over multiple cups of coffee at odd locations, the ball finally rolled after it received funding in the form of angel investments from the Steelbird Helmet group. The company was registered in January 2015 and operations

DELHI-JAIPUR We started off early to avoid the traffic on the busy NH8, the agile Scramblers helping us weave through the ponderous trucks and stay ahead of the madly driven cars. A quick stop for breakfast at a Coffee Day outlet after Neemrana followed by a mandatory lassi stop and we were on the outskirts of Jaipur by lunch time. Our destination for the day was the luxurious Lebua resort adjoining Amer fort. We got off the highway and entered the national park and after 5 km of riding through the forest trail we were on time for lunch. During lunch everyone was comparing notes on how the motorcycle felt and in unison we
decided to explore the trails a little more on the Scramblers. Once we got back on the trail the Scrambler felt at home on the light sand trails and the Pirellis that it comes fitted with did inspire us with confidence. The going can get a little rough on rocky paths but the Scrambler still managed it without complaining too much. The final stop was the Delhi Gate which used to be the gateway for all trade moving in and out of Jaipur to Delhi.
JAIPUR-BIKANER Day2 was to be long ride. We had planned to cross the Sambhar Lake. Setting off from Lebua early in the morning we made excellent time on the Ajmer highway before we left it near Dudu. Riding on narrow single lane roads is always more fun and 5 km before Sambhar village we took the track leading us towards the Salt lake. The track soon ended and we were

riding on fine powdery sand with thorny scrubs all around us. All of a sudden there was no vegetation and we were on the edge of the salt flats that’s extended for 20 kms in every direction. The sight of the vast open flats was magical and we spent the next hour riding around before we decided to cross it to get to Nawa village. Fifteen minutes into the flat was when the lake bed told us it has a mind of its own. The lake bed hadn’t dried enough and soon the bikes were digging ruts into the crust , with the clay getting packed into the chain, swingarm and every other gap that the a motorcycle can possess. We extricated the bikes and made our way to Nawa via a different route before stopping near Rupangarh for lunch. From Rupangarh we headed for

Nagaur, and this stretch of road has minimal traffic and we did excellent time. However the time we spent on the Salt Lake meant that we were behind schedule and at 6 pm we were 70 km from Bikaner. The stretch from Nokha to Bikaner which is beautiful with same sand dunes on the side, also has numerous potholes that can swallow a wheel and soon one of our riders hit a particularly bad crater and cracked the rim, and the bike wouldn’t move forward. This cost us additional time as we had to arrange for a pickup to carry the bike and by the time we arrived at Laxmi Niwas Palace it was 9 P.M. Although we were all a little tired because of the long day, for some of us it was the first time we were spending a night in a palace. With a beer in hand

BIKANER-MANWAR The ride to Manwar from Bikaner is pretty short and the original plan was to the desert camp before lunch. However because of the previous day’s incident we had a delayed start. The road from Bikaner was pretty smooth and soon we had crossed Phalodi and sighted the dunes near Dechoo. After riding around a little we rode up to the top of one of the dunes to watch the desert sunset. The camp was 5 km away and we made it to the camp as the day was coming to a close. The Manvar camp was as luxurious as a 5 star hotel and we spent the evening watching some traditional performances by the villagers. The lights went out after dinner giving us a magnificent view of the star filled sky and soon we retired to the cozy tents/
MANWAR-JODHPUR Rising up early , partly because of the cold, we finished breakfast and headed towards Jodhpur. Our goal for the day was to reach Jodhpur and see if we can spot the well that Christian Bale climbs out of in “The Dark Knight Rises”. We were staying at Raas Haveli a heritage property that was situated right behind the impressive Mehrangarh fort. After a quick ride we reached Raas for lunch and made up our
minds to climb up the hill to the fort. The Mehrangarh fort is impressive and we spent a lot of time in it but we were disappointed when we were told that the well was off limits to public. Walking down from the fort we decided to check out the local market and soon most of us were in tears, thanks due to the Mirchi Wada which Kevin aptly christened the Chilli Bomb. Shumi would be leaving the group today as he was only doing half the leg and since he had an early morning flight we bid him adieu and called it a night.
narrow hill roads and after 60 km of winding roads passing through lush greenery we reached “The Aodhi”, our shelter for the night. A quick visit to the fort followed by a brilliant Rajasthan dinner, a poolside folk dance presentation and we were off to bed.
JODHPUR – KUMBALGARH
KUMBALGARHDEVIGARH
After 4 days of pretty straight highways with a little offroad thrown in between it was time to head into the mountains. Nestled in the Aravalli range Kumbalgarh is a majestic fort of the erstwhile kingdom of Chittor. Riding on the Jodhpur Udaipur Highway we soon got off the highway and headed towards Nadol and Sadri. Situated at the bottom of the hills is the famous Ranakpur Jain temple. Famous for its interlocking marble architecture, it was also our lunch halt. We began our climb on the
Another day of riding in the hills, we started early in the morning and passed Haldighati before descending down to the Udaipur Beawar highway. Our destination was Devigarh a palace 26 km away from Udaipur. Reaching the palace we were awestruck with luxury on offer and soon we were checking out each other’s room to see who had the best digs. We decided to chill in the palace for the evening and explore the nearby town of Delwara. The next day was a rest day and we went into Udaipur, called
54 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2016
“The Venice of the East” because of its lakes and palaces. The day was well spent and we returned to Devigarh for the night.
DEVIGARH-NIMAJ The ride was coming to a close and Rajasthan still had a gem to offer, Nimaaj a small village close to Barr. Taking the six lane high way that soon turned to a single track broken road we reached Sojat before landing into Nimaaj. Owned by the Thakur’s family for the last 400 years the Nimaaj Palace with it turrets and citadels stands out proudly in the center of the village.
NIMAAJ- JAIPUR This as a transport section again and our destination was the Lebua lodge. We made good time and reached the resort in time for coffee. Later sitting by the bonfire with glasses in our hands we toasted to the first successful Rajput Trail. MI

NEWS Govt decides to directly shift from BS-IV to BS-VI emission norms
Michelin enters scooter tyre market in India
The Government has decided to skip Bharat Stage (BS) V emission norms altogether and move on to BS VI emission norms from the current BS IV norms. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has decided to leapfrog from BS-IV to BS-VI emission norms directly by April1, 2020. A unanimous decision was taken on January 6, 2016 in a meeting chaired by Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari and attended by Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Anant Geete, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar, and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan along with senior officials of the Ministries to directly switch over to BS-VI emission norms from the present
Tyre major Michelin has announced its entry into the scooter tyre market in India with the launch of Michelin City Pro tyres for scooters and motorcycles of up to 150cc. With robust tyre construction, the Michelin City Pro is an advanced two-wheeler tyre range that is best suited for daily commute. Pradeep G Thampy, Commercial Director, Two Wheels, Michelin Asia, Africa and Middle East, said, “Scooters have become increasingly popular in India and emerged as a preferred choice of commuting because of ease of riding and parking in congested areas. The convenience of push start, fuel efficiency and comfort of automatic transmission are enablers to this new trend, which has also seen more and more women adopt scooters as
BS-IV emission norms. The Ministry will soon issue a notification in this regard. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured supply of BS-VI fuel across the country by 01.04.2020. The Ministry has withdrawn an earlier draft which had suggested shifting to BS-VI after switch to BS-V. The Ministry is also sure that the Indian Automobile industry with its technical competence and commitment to environment will rise to the occasion and support the decision. It may be mentioned that the Auto Fuel Policy had recommended implementation of BS-VI norms by 2024. Earlier in the draft notification by the Ministry the date was advanced to 01.04.2021 and now it has been further advanced to 01.04.2020.
their choice of mobility. Michelin City Pro, a robust tyre will offer daily commuters with a comfortable in-city ride experience” Michelin City Pro is the latest generation of Michelin scooter and motorcycle tyres, especially designed for intensive urban use, subjected to the most demanding of impacts and stresses. The combination of Michelin Overlap Technology (MOT), three reinforced plies and a layer of rubber beneath the tread makes the Michelin City Pro extremely robust, thus reducing the risk of punctures. Its new tread pattern with large circumferential grooves delivers improved wet grip.

Optare electric buses to ply for 322km on one charge Optare, the market leader for pure electric buses, has announced that it is well underway with a project that will increase the range of its MetroCity and Solo EVs to 200 miles (322km approx.) with no net weight gain and no intrusion into passenger space. “This ongoing project will double their range,” says Engineering Director Alastair Munro. “It is supported by our parent company Ashok Leyland, which has phenomenal technical ability, but at the moment the range extension project is managed by Optare,” he says. Phase two of the plan will be joint between the two companies, he says adding that
www.motownindia.com
“Much of the project is how we match high-performance motors and transmissions. We are also looking at battery technology, and how they are packaged.” Munro adds that a key part of extending the range of EVs is how on-bus heating is managed. “That can make a huge difference to energy consumption, and part of the project is to engineer things correctly to use energy in the best way possible,” he says, which may extend to pre-heating the bus during its overnight charge and adding insulation. Keeping whole-life costs low is also a priority. “Almost anything is possible with an electric bus, but we have to be
realistic. We could fit very highperformance batteries, but they would significantly increase the purchase price of the bus. It’s a balancing act between weight, passenger capacity – and how much the operator is prepared to spend,” he says. Work to convert a demonstrator and the first of six in-service Solo EVs to double their range has already begun at the Sherburnin-Elmet plant, with the last to be completed before June. Munro also confirms that an
electric MetroDecker doubledecker is expected to debut towards the end of 2016. It will retain the diesel version’s 18,000kg GVW and will not need to take advantage of the forthcoming relaxation of the maximum weight for two-axle PCVs to 19,500kg.
