ALL-NEW 2018 MARUTI SUZUKI SWIFT
SUAVE & SWIFT
F
Report: P. Tharyan Photography: Afsar Baig
rom the 1st generation Maruti Swift launched in 2005, to the 3rd generation Maruti Suzuki Swift to be launched in February 2018, the popular middle class hatchback has come a long way. More than 5.5 million Swift cars have been sold worldwide since its launch and of that more than 1.7 million have been sold in India alone. So is this new 3rd gen Swift ready to take on the mammoth competition it will now be facing in the hatchback segment? We check it out.
EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The Swift continues to feature amongst the top five selling cars in India for over a decade and this is for good measure. The looks of the Swift are chic and suave. The

new third generation model carries forward a very radical attitude embodied in the two generations of the Swift that came before. This new model comes with a very curvy and saucy design. Its faรงade features a bold bumper with a distinct single aperture grille that houses horizontal slats. The front features angular headlamps with LED DRLs and projector headlamps with a follow me home feature but these are unfortunately only available with the top spec models. The side gets a floating roof design and a curvy belt line with a flowing architecture. The rear gets contemporary looking tail lamps and has an overall smart look. It is also interesting to note that the
wheelbase of the new Swift has gone up by 20mm. This means more legroom and that is evident. The width of the hatch has also gone up by 40mm. Boot space has also increased by 58 litres. Front shoulder room in the hatch has increased by 23mm while rear shoulder room has gone up by 8mm. The Swift gets a decent ground clearance of 163mm. These figures are according to the new ARAI standards and we found the hatch to clear most common undulations and bumps that we usually face on Indian roads.
INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The cabin of the Swift has been inspired by the design of a cockpit and feels quite modish. The qualities of materials used

It renders ample of back support, lumbar support and under-thigh support. The rear bench is rather flat and provides good back support and under-thigh support. A comfortable seating of three adults in the rear is also possible with the floor tunnel not being too intrusive. As for storage space, there is lots of it. The inner door panels now accommodate large bottles and other knick knacks. The steering wheel with a flat bottom looks

very sporty and feels chunky to handle. The material wrapping the steering wheel is also top notch. Thought the steering wheel can be adjusted for rake, it does not have a telescopic feature. On the features front as well, the Swift comes fully loaded with kit. The top features on the list include a SmartPlay infotainment setup with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Navigation and Voice Command. You also get USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity options. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Maruti is offering the new third generation Swift with two powertrain options, a 1197cc, 4 cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol and the 1248cc Fiat sourced, 4 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. These are the same as the ones found on the Dzire sedan. Maruti is also offering the Swift with the option of an automatic transmission which comes in the form of their Auto Gear Shift (AGS) technology which in essence means an Automated Manual Transmission.. The petrol powered 1.2L engine puts out a neat 81.8hp of power high up in the band at 6000rpm. The revs build up in a very linear manner and the high revving nature of the engine renders a very sporty and thrilling drive experience. This 1.2 L petrol motor churns out 113NM of torque which comes in the midrange at 4000rpm. If a burst of power is what you are looking for, then this petrol motor is not going to rock your boat. It feels more refined and one needs to wait a bit for the revs to build up.

The 5-speed manual gearbox is as crisp as a biting into Doritos. The gears slot quite easily and the clutch is light making it fun to drive. The automatic, however, is a different case all together with the gear box taking a wee bit of time to downshift when power is demanded. The AGS otherwise is quite happy ambling around at low speeds. You also get the option of shifting manually with the AGS and the transmission while driving manually responds more accurately. The diesel powered 1.3L engine is in another league. This Fiat sourced engine mated to the 5-speed transmission is a gem to drive and really puts a T in Thrilling. The engine puts out 74hp at 4000rpm and 190NM at 2000rpm. The engine takes a wee bit to get going but once the turbo kicks in, a jolt of force will throw you back in your seat as the car surges forward. The meat of the power in
www.motownindia.com
this engine lies higher up in the band but getting there is not too tough. The engine mated to the 5 speed manual gearbox is sporty to drive but it also means you may end up shifting gears more often than you would in its petrol counterpart. This diesel motor is quick through the first three gears and cruising on the fourth and fifth is quite a treat. The diesel mill mated to this auto does feel a little livelier than its petrol counterpart. The lag, however, is still quite apparent and only fades away once you reach higher gears. For city commuting the diesel automatic is an ideal option and is quite happy cruising at city speeds with gears shifting more subtly than you would expect. The new Swift has been built on the 5th generation HEARTECT platform which improves the hatchback’s strength and rigidity also benefitting its power to weight
ratio. The Swift rides on a mildly soft suspension which has been setup well to take on the varying Indian road conditions. Braking is facilitated by a disc brake setup in the front and drum brakes in the rear. The brakes are progressive and effective.
VERDICT All said and done, the all-new Maruti Suzuki Swift is a brilliant offering for the growing middle class in India who are on the lookout for a car that is contemporary in its styling, frugal when it comes to fuel consumption, is spacious in its seating, is responsive in its driving and most important is backed by a very trusted brand.

very year around Christmas time, my mother gets out her baking mitts and kneads up some of the best doughnut dough I have ever tasted. But this year was different. This year I decided to help out in the kitchen. While gathering the ingredients I suggested the addition of cinnamon to one batch, and that turned out to be a wise decision. The dough was more or less the same but the flavour was entirely different. It is almost like what Audi has done with the new Q5, a sprinkle of change on the design front, some new features and what you get is a brand new flavour, made from the same, great tasting dough.
EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES To behold, the new Audi Q5 is quite dashing. The designers of the Q5 have moved a little away from the straight line scheme and introduced a dash of curves to give this SUV a little more attitude than before. This becomes evident when you take a closer look at the SUV. The side profile

features a prominent belt line that has a flowing and minutely curvy design to it. The silhouette has a very gradual and gentle slope backward and ends in a neat and curvy behind. The rear LED lamps come with dynamic turn indicators and have a curvy yet sophisticated design. The facade of the new Q5 sports modish LED headlamps with a neat looking DRL design. The singleframe grille is reminiscent of the one on the Q7. The front also gets large air intakes and has ample of plastic cladding all around. Adding a bit to the butch appeal of the SUV are bold and pronounced wheel arches that play home to bulky 235/60 R18 tyres. The new Audi Q5 definitely has a good on-road presence. The new design language is not overly exciting but it has a nice twist to it.
INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES Step into the cabin of the new Q5 and you are greeted with warm and earthy interiors. Audi

has furnished the interiors with a beige leather and leatherette upholstery. The beige colour scheme goes well with wooden inlays which have been set all around the cabin. The German car manufacturer has seamlessly blended technology into the spaces of this cabin and has ensured efficient ergonomics. Some striking features which will set the Q5 apart from the herd include Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, a three zone climate control with an individual zone for the rear seat occupants and the Audi phone box with inductive charging.
The seating in the cabin is more than comfy and all occupants will get a very roomy feeling in the cabin. This is partly due to the massive panoramic sun roof up top. Rear seat occupants can also get a manual roll up blind. The boot space offered on the Q5 ranges from 550 litres and can be extended upto 1550 litres with the rear seats down. The rear seat back also gets a standardised 3 way split. Audi has ensured the cabin of the Q5 exudes luxury. That said it does not really stand out in the crowd but gets a very safe design theme.
Other features being offered on the new Audi Q5 include electrically adjusted driver (with memory function) and co passenger seat with a 4 way lumbar support adjustment, interior mirror with an auto dimming function, MMI control with touch pad, voice control, navigation and multiple connectivity options. The Audi Q5 also gets an electric boot release and boot lid closing function. That said, features like a boot release sensor could have been included. The new Q5 features a 21.08 cms MMI monitor which is a fixed unit. It also doubles up as a parking camera. For safety purposes the SUV also features sensors, the inclusion of a park assist feature would have done wonders in adding to the convenience this SUV has to offer, but that has sadly not been included on the package.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE
20 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2018
Powering the new Q5 is a 2 litre, 4 cylinder turbo diesel TDI mill that churns out a solid 400Nm of torque and 190hp of power. The engine is now 8pc more powerful and 20pc more efficient with a claimed fuel efficiency figure standing at 17.01kms to a litre. The engine renders its peak torque low in the range at 1750rpm. This ranges up to 3000rpm and then caters to a peppy surge when you floor it. Peak power comes in at 3800rpm and goes up to 4200rpm.
quite smooth while ambling at lower speeds and is responsive when you want to get going. Also on offer are various drive modes to for your different moods. The suspension leans to the softer side and takes care of most undulations and bumps quite well. The quattro setup ensures good control no matter what conditions you are driving in. Even at high speeds the Q5 holds well to the road and in corners displays the best of German engineering. Braking is facilitated with an all disc brake set up, the brakes are crisp and accurate. The overall drive experience of the Q5 is admirable and the SUV does well both on and off the beaten path.
VERDICT The new Audi Q5 is made from the same great tasting dough that made the previous generation SUV. It does get a new flavour thanks to the introduction of a few curves to the body and the addition of new features. All of this goes to make a fine purchase if the price is reasonable.
The performance of the Q5 is not entirely too exciting but it does get going in a hurry if you want it to. Audi has claimed the new Q5 to be able to touch a top speed of 218kmph and that it can accelerate to 100kmph from standstill in 7.9 seconds. The DCT is also

ver ended up with an aching left foot after your dreadful commute back home from work through nightmarish traffic? Well, that’s what most of us staying in metropolitans face on a daily basis. The effort put into braking, clutching and shifting gears can get a bit too annoying after a hard day’s work. Thankfully two-pedal technology has trickled down to entry level hatchbacks and thewe had a go at the latest in the lot, the Datsun redi-GO AMT. This new variant of the redi-GO comes with a 1.0L, 3 pot petrol unit, the same that powers the 1.0L Renault Kwid. The transmission is a 5-speed automatic and comes with the option to shift manually as well. This is something the Kwid misses out on with its rotary dial style gear selector. There is no cosmetic update on the new redi-GO AMT, neither are there any badges or decals to differentiate it. The only new addition aside from the AMT is a new music system that now gets bluetooth connectivity along with USB and AUX inputs. We took the new AMT for a spin around the crowded streets of Delhi and were pleasantly surprised with the way it performed. If you are planning on ambling around the city or

are moving through bumper to bumper traffic you will hardly notice the gearshifts. The AMT performs very well if you are not pushing the vehicle hard, it also comes with a creep function to enhance the convenience offered on the redi-GO. This we found particularly helpful when we were stuck in traffic jams across the city and the traffic moves at a snail pace. What we did find unusual was the manual shifter on the AMT in the redi-GO. Like most automatics with a manual shifting option, you push the lever up to up-shift and down to down-shift. But it was the complete opposite in the redi-GO. That is something you may need to get used to if you are already driving or have driven an automatic before.

transmission responds well to driver inputs. The Datsun redi-GO AMT is a smart choice for city commutes, this is primarily because of its compact dimensions, tall boy design and obviously the new AMT which makes the commute less of a burden. It does what is has been designed to do, but push the hatch too hard and the performance may leave you disappointed. While driving in auto, we found the transmission lagging a bit. If you are ambling around traffic and want to pick up pace it takes the gear box a second or two to downshift before you can get going. In manual mode this lag is not apparent and the
Our overall experience with the Datsun redi-GO AMT was quite a fair one. We took it all across the city of Delhi from morning to evening and were quite comfy in this cabin even while we were in the thick of traffic. The drivability and zippy nature of this hatch is complemented with the addition of the automatic transmission. What’s more, the redi-GO has the best-in-class ground clearance and in my opinion the best driver’s point of view. It’s definitely a favourable choice in this segment.

VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT
WINDS OF CHANGE Report: Joshua David Luther Photography: Afsar Baig
I
t was a foggy morning in Delhi, I was behind the wheel of the swanky new Volkswagen Passat when a familiar song echoed over the radio. It was the ‘Winds of Change’ by the Scorpions, a song I grew up hearing. There was something about the lyrics of the song and the way the new Passat drove that simply put me in a wonderful mood. But it was only quite later that I realised this song was a perfect representation of the Passat which offers a lot of luxury, comfort and convenience at a reasonable price.
EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The design of the Passat is not drop dead gorgeous but yes it can definitely make heads turn and look again. Volkswagen has given a modern and sophisticated twist to the design of the new Passat. Out and out VW has followed a very safe design with minimal experimentation.
22 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2018
That being said, there are a few elements which do hint at a futuristic look. The headlamp design for example, is quite bold and easily stands out in a crowd. The Passat also features a prominent shoulder line which is characteristic of the current design theme from VW. The side profile also features 10 spoke, 17 inch alloys which look smart and enhance the profile of this sedan. The LED tail lamps go well with the overall design scheme but are not too exciting to look at. Volkswagen has added a dash of technology on the exterior features. The sedan gets an automatic headlamp function as well as rain sensing wipers. The passengers are also offered keyless entry and an easy to open boot with a sensor based boot lid release function. We found this system installed on the Volkswagen Passat to work efficiently every single time. I cannot say the same for its competitors which offer the same

Another feature which has been included on the Passat is a tyre pressure monitoring system which proves to be quite handy.
INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES If you liked the exterior design, then you would definitely fall in love with the interiors. The cabin of the new Passat comes with Nappa leather upholstery which complements the black colour theme inside. The dash sports wood finish

inserts and also gets an analogue clock adding a touch of class to the overall theme. The centre floor console, dash and steering also feature a piano black finish which does look good but is prone to fingerprints and dust. The seating is incredibly comfy in the Passat and to add to the comfort is the provision of heated front seats which are also electrically adjustable. The driver seat also gets a memory function and a massage function as well. Another handy feature which has been incorporated on the Passat is a three zone automatic climate control setup with rear ac vents. VW has also added a push button start/ stop function, electrically adjustable and retractable ORVMs, voice commands, cruise control, rear view camera with 360 degree viewing angle and an electrically operated roll up sunshade. The new Volkswagen Passat comes with Park Assist -
24 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2018
Hands Free Parking. We extensively tested out the system to conclude that it does do its job decently well but the driver will definitely need some getting used to it. The overall comfort inside the cabin is quite good and the ambience boasts of a premium and luxurious feel. Rear seat occupants also get a clear view of the road ahead and a roomy feeling inside the cabin is enhanced with the addition of a sunroof.
ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE At the heart of the Passat is a 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo diesel unit. This diesel mill churns out a blistering 350Nm of torque that makes the drive very spirited. The engine produces its peak torque low in the band from 1500rpm ranging
www.motownindia.com

up to 3500rpm. If you are ambling around in the city the ride is rather smooth thanks to the 6-speed automatic DSG gearbox but put your foot down on the accelerator and the heady dose of torque will surely thrill you. The engine has been tuned to produce 174hp which ranges from 3600rpm to 4000rpm. The Passat renders a very spirited and fun drive. It can be sporty on highways and VW has catered to various drive modes, simply to enhance the driving feel this saloon has to offer. The suspension setup on the Passat is a bit stiffer than I would have liked but does the job decently well. It also renders ample of control at high speeds and takes care of most undulations with ease. The braking
www.motownindia.com
setup is facilitated by disc brakes on all wheels and the progressive braking will surely inspire confidence in you. The turning radius of the Passat is short and it is quite easy to maneuver, even in city traffic. The sedan comes with multiple sensors and a very accurate map of distances from other vehicles, however
the acoustic warning system can get a bit annoying after a while. On the safety front the Passat offers customers 9 airbags, hill start assist, electronic stability control, ABS, ASR and EDL.
VERDICT The overall package that Volkswagen is offering in the new Passat is quite enticing to me as a buyer. At a price point of close to Rs. 33 lakh one does get a lot comfort, convenience, performance, luxury and utility in a single platform. For us the Volkswagen Passat is definitely a must buy in this segment and should soon usher in the winds of change.

et us not just hail the winners in each of the categories of the 40th edition of Dakar Rally in 2018, whether it is Matthias Walkner of Red Bull KTM Factory Team in the bike section, or Ignacio Casale of Casale Racing in the quad section. Or as a matter of fact, let us not just applaud Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz of Team Peugeot Total in the car section or the troika of Eduard Nikolaev, Evgeny Yakovlev and Vladimir Rybakov of Kamaz – Master in the trucks section or the pair consisting of Reinaldo Varela and Gustavo Gugelmin of South Racing - Can Am in the SxS section. The winners are each of the participants at the Dakar who may or may not have completed the 13 stages of the rally (Of the 14 stages, one was

cancelled). Because at Dakar they say Dream, Dare and Live it. The ones who got off the starting line at Lima in Peru need to be saluted for having dreamt, dared and lived it. And that does not just include the gritty men but also the several female participants who proved to the world that they too are made of the sterner stuff. Two Indian motorcycle companies Hero MotoCorp and TVS Motor Company too need to be applauded for getting three riders each to compete in the rally. While a rookie for Hero MotoSports Team Rally Oriol Mena came in 7th overall, for Sherco TVS Rally Factory it was a 40 year old man with a massive build Juan Pedrero Garcia who was the sole rider to finish the race and come in 11th overall. Our very own Indian rider from Hero MotoSports
Santosh Chunchunguppe Shivashankar or CS Santosh as he is known here in India, came in 34th overall. While Hero’s Joaquim Rodrigues was knocked off the contention very early in the race, Sherco TVS’ Adrien Metge and Aravind KP too withdrew after being injured. A special mention needs to be made of Laia Sanz the gritty female rider representing KTM Factory Racing Team who completed the race and came in 12th overall. In the quad section too, Olga Rouckova, another female rider, representing Moto Racing Group (MRG) finished the race in 26th position. The rally which started on January 6, 2018 ended on January 20 with one day of rest and one cancelled stage. It crossed three countries starting from Peru, then

to Bolivia and finally ended in Argentina’s Cordoba. This was the 10th Dakar to be held in South America. Córdoba was host to the Dakar finish line for the first time. The race which started from South America’s Lima in Peru to Pisco to San Juan De Marcona to Arequipa to La Paz in Bolivia, then to Uyuni to Tupiza and Salta, Belen, Chilecito and then San Juan and finally to Cordoba in Argentina was no ordinary track. The race was divided into 14 stages covering more than 9000 km. Stage 9 was cancelled because of bad weather. Seven of the stages consisted of 100pc dunes and off-road. When the race started more than 500 competitors were in the fray. There were
28 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2018
11 women on the start list. The traditional motorcycle, quad, car and truck categories was joined by the S×S for the second year running. These light-weight buggies limited to 1000 cc saw 11 crews participating this year. Around 188 motorcycles and quads, 103 cars and S×S and 44 trucks were cleared to start the 40th edition of the Dakar. Around 114 of the 523 competitors made their Dakar debut, while 51 had already taken part in 10 editions or more. In the last stage, the victories achieved by Kevin Benavides in the bike race, Ignacio Casale in the quad category, Giniel de Villiers in the car race and Ton van Genugten in the truck category did not affect the positions at the top of the rally’s hierarchy. Matthias
Walkner became the first Austrian winner on a bike, with Austrian brand KTM continuing to dominate the event thanks to a 17th consecutive success. For its last participation, Peugeot also retained the title, but this time only one of their cars was on the podium, namely the 3008 Maxi driven by winner Carlos Sainz. Under threat until the day before the finish from Federico Villagra, in the end Eduard Nikolaev obtained a third title behind the wheel of his Kamaz. As for Chilean Ignacio Casale, to win his 2nd Dakar he dominated the general standings from start to finish. In total, 191 vehicles completed the 40th edition: 85 bikes, 32 quads, 49 cars including 6 SxS and 25 trucks, meaning 55%

of the competitors that set out from Lima two weeks ago reached the finish. More open than ever before, the bike race soon produced its first surprise with the premature exit from the rally of Sam Sunderland in the dunes of San Juan de Marcona on only day 4 of the rally. The title holder and winner of 2 out of the first 3 stages left the field clear for a hungry chasing pack led by the new guard represented by Adrien van Beveren and Kevin Benavides. The two men challenged the usual domination of KTM, exchanging the lead in the general standings on several occasions. This battle was interspersed with exploits from Joan Barreda or Antoine Meo, before an intense and devastating tenth stage. A day which should have allowed the
www.motownindia.com
young Argentinean to triumph in his home country instead put an end to his hopes due to a terrible navigational error in the river beds of Belén towards the end of the special. He dragged a good number of the favourites down with him, including Toby Price, with Matthias Walkner and Van Beveren the only leading riders to come out unscathed. However, the Yamaha rider did not remain unharmed due to a terrible fall 3 km from the finish, which put the Austrian in sole command of the Dakar. Controlling the race perfectly up to the end of the event, at the age of 31 years the Austrian has grabbed the biggest prize of his career, allowing KTM to continue an incredible sequence of 17 consecutive triumphs.
The day after his first stage victory and the 10th of his career on the Dakar, Sébastien Loeb was forced to exit the race, undone by the Tanaka Desert’s dunes! It was not the first or last dramatic turn of events in this unpredictable and untameable Dakar: Nani Roma rolled out of the rally early, on the loop around Pisco, whilst Stéphane Peterhansel lost the lead of the rally following an accident on the marathon stage at Uyuni. Even a dunes specialist like Nasser Al Attiyah got stuck in the sand around San Juan de Marcona and lost more than one hour after just four days of racing! In the midst of this carnage, Carlos Sainz put in a faultless performance which nobody had been expecting from him. “El Matador”

was precise in his attacks, reeled in the lead and then controlled the race with assurance behind the wheel of his 3008 Maxi. In Córdoba, he climbed onto the top step of the podium that is strikingly similar to that of 2010, when the Spaniard also beat Al Attiyah (by just 2 minutes). Giniel de Villiers finished in the top 3 for the 8th time in 15 participations, while Stéphane Peterhansel missed out, after slipping off the podium the day before the finish. With three consecutive victories on the first three stages, Ignacio Casale spread panic among his rivals in the quad category. Sergey Karyakin, the distanced title holder, exited the rally injured, just like Rafal Sonik, the winner in 2015. In

imperial form in the dunes, the Chilean was also able to boss the rest of the pack, whilst allowing leeway for expression on their home terrain to two young Argentineans who represent the future of the discipline: Nicolas Cavigliasso, 26 years old, and Jeremias González Ferioli, 22. The three men made up the final podium in this order. Eduard Nikolaev started his eighth Dakar at one hell of a pace. Thanks to imperial performances in the Peruvian dunes, the 2017 champion soon opened up big gaps over all his rivals, except for the tenacious Federico Villagra. The Argentinean was the only driver able to take the battle to the Kamaz clan leader and had to grin and bear
it during the first week, before putting the Russian under pressure as well as taking the general standings lead from him. However, a gearbox problem put paid to the Iveco driver’s hopes as he exited the race the day before the finish. This let Nikolaev triumph for the 3rd time on the Dakar. The runner-up, Siarhei Viazovich, finished the rally more than 4 hours behind him. For the second year of the SxS category, Reinaldo Varela displayed superb consistency at the forefront of the category, with 5 stage victories enabling him to occupy the top step on the podium. The Brazilian was involved in a fierce battle with Frenchman Patrice Garrouste, who also picked up 5 stage wins.

AUTO EXPO 2018 AUTO EXPO 2018 CURTAIN RAISER
An Electric Flair Teaser shot of high speed e-motorcycle to be launched by Emflux Motors
Motown India Bureau The 14th edition of the biennial Auto Expo 2018 will again see auto component manufacturers and automobile manufacturers hosting their respective shows in two different venues. While the Components Show will be held in Pragati Maidan in New Delhi (from Feb 8 to 11, 2018), the Motor Show will be held at the India Expo Mart in Greater Noida on the outskirts of Delhi in the state of Uttar Pradesh (from Feb 9 to 14, 2018). The Motor Show will be spread across 74,500 sq metres with automobile majors participating in 14 indoor exhibition halls. The Components Show will be spread over 60,000 square metres with seven country pavilions and participation from over 20 countries. The Motor Show will see an array of new electric vehicle launches and concepts that would have an electric flair to it. Though there would be launches of new vehicles run on IC engines, an electric push would be quite evident. At the Motor Show in 2018, the number of vehicle exhibitors has come down to 51 from the previous level of 59. But the number of start ups has gone up to 12 as compared to two in the last expo. Moreover, there were 88 exhibitors in the last expo, while this year it has gone up to 100, said the organisers. Around 24 new launches are expected at the 2018 Auto Expo. 32 | MOTOWN INDIA | FEBRUARY 2018

AUTO EXPO 2018 Four-wheeler makers like Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota, Mahindra, Honda Cars India, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Renault have taken up huge spaces at the expo. South Korean car maker Kia Motors will be making its debut at the show as the company will soon be manufacturing its cars in India. Honda Cars India will unveil its exhibition line-up in the presence of Takahiro Hachigo, President & CEO, Honda Motor Company, Japan and Yoichiro Ueno, President & CEO, Honda Cars India Ltd. Among the four wheeler big ticket players there is a huge miss this time around. The drop outs include the entire Volkswagen family that consists of Volkswagen India, Audi India, Skoda Auto India, Scania and MAN Trucks. The Fiat Chrysler Group is also missing. Hence, neither Fiat India, nor Jeep would be at the show. Mitsubishi and Volvo Auto India will continue to shy away from the Auto Expo, as they have been doing so in the past. Ford India too has gone missing this time around. Isuzu Motors with its adventure vehicles have also opted out of the show. Though Renault is taking part in the show, it’s other half, Nissan is not participating. Datsun
too will not be participating. A one-time great participant General Motors India will be sorely missed. GM India is no more selling its products in India, rather it is exporting its products to the global markets from India.Truck majors Daimler, Eicher and Volvo will not be participating at the show. Big names in the car industry like Lamborghini, Maserati, Ferrari, Porsche, Rolls Royce and Bentley, among others may be selling in India in small numbers, but they never really bother to participate in India because of the limited market scope here in the country. For those not selling at all in India like the Paganis, Bugattis, McLarens, Spykers, Aston Martins, Pininfarinas and Koenigseggs, well it makes no sense to be at an auto expo here. Big motorcycle players have also taken up huge spaces at the expo. Showcasing their new products will be the likes of BMW Motorrad, Suzuki Motorcycle, Piaggio Vehicles, Hero MotoCorp, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, Yamaha, TVS, Kawasaki,
UM Motorcycles, Hero Electric, Lohia Auto and Okinawa among others. Hero MotoCorp and TVS Motor Company can be expected to showcase their Dakar 2018 motorcycles. After all, both the companies managed to do relatively well in the recently concluded rally in South America. Meanwhile, in the two-wheeler section, superbike makers like Harley-Davidson, Triumph Motorcycles, Ducati, KTM, Indian Motorcycles and local brands like Bajaj Auto and Royal Enfield are also giving the show a miss. Organisers say that despite the absence of several companies at the show, the 2018 Auto Expo is expected to be a major hit with at least 24 new launches and unveiling of over 100 products. Little known brands in India are also gearing up to launch their products in India. Cleveland Werks of US and start ups like Emflux Motors and Twenty Two Motors will be launching new products. Not to be missed are the stalls put up by car toy brand Hot Wheels, motorcycle super store brand Riderz Planet and motor home makers Pinnacle Speciality Vehicles.
MOTOWN INDIA will be one of the media partners to the show and would be present at stall number E3Q2 in HALL NO.1 on the Ground Floor of the main building of the INDIA EXPO MART. Motown India will be offering huge discounts for the subscription and purchase of its magazine, along with hefty discounts on Motown India merchandise and other products. Merchandise will include helmet covers, sweat shirts, caps, wall calendars and a lot more.

TECHNOLOGY NISSAN’S new technology uses brain waves to improve driving Moving towards the future, Nissan unveiled their latest technology - Brain to Vehicle (B2V), which enables a vehicle to interpret signals coming from the driver’s brain. According to the car manufacturer the technology is set to redefine how people will interact with cars in the future. The B2V technology is said to enhance the reaction time for drivers and will eventually assist in making cars that can constantly adapt. The B2V technology was showcased at the CES 2018 trade show in Las Vegas, USA held from Jan 7 to 12, 2018. This technology is one of the latest to be developed by Nissan Intelligent Mobility. The B2V technology uses signals from the drivers mind to make the drive even more exciting and enjoyable. This one of a kind system uses a device (worn by the driver) which maps brain wave activity and then analyses it. The system can thus anticipate an intended movement by the driver and then take actions like turning the steering wheel or slowing down the car upto 0.2 to 0.5 seconds faster than the driver but doing so very subtly. This new technology has been derived by Nissan after extensive research in brain decoding technology. The technology predicts driver actions and detects any discomfort being faced. It catches
the signs that the driver’s brain is about to initiate movement, like turning the steering wheel or pushing the accelerator pedal, then the various driver aides take over and make the action more rapidly. Thus improving the reaction time and improving the manual driving experience. The technology also picks up signs that the driver is facing discomfort and changes the driving configuration and style. Dr. Lucian Gheorghe, Senior Innovation Researcher, Nissan Research Centre hinted that the technology can also be used to adjust the vehicles internal environment. This can be achieved by creating an augmented reality which adjusts what the driver is able to see, thus catering to a more relaxed environment inside the vehicle.
