B2B COVER REPORT : DIESEL CARS ABOVE 2,000CC ENGINE KNOCKED OUT! (PAGES 58 TO 63)

P. THARYAN t is the beginning of a new year. Unfortunately, the year 2015 ended on a sour note for the auto industry, especially manufacturers of diesel cars. The Supreme Court of India banned sale of diesel cars with engine capacities larger than 2,000cc in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) till March 31, 2016. The ruling came like a

punch below the belt for the car manufacturers, especially for the likes of Mahindra & Mahindra and Mercedes-Benz India. Though respecting the court ruling, as a media house, Motown India is appalled by this decision and does not endorse it at all. Car manufacturers whether foreign or Indian have invested large sums of money in the country setting up plants and giving employment to thousands of workers. The vehicles that came out of their factories were as per the norms established by the Indian government, whether it was pertaining to the build of the product or whether it was meeting the prescribed emission norms. Simply banning diesel vehicles is not the answer and is unfair to say the least. The Supreme Court said that by banning diesel vehicles there would be a control on the growing pollution in the city. Yes, we agree, pollution levels are alarming in the capital city. But the fact is that most of the pollution comes from dust, burning of wood and leaves, construction work and from old trucks plying in the city. Rather than getting rid of old and dilapidated vehicles plying or stranded on the roads, the court has banned brand new vehicles meeting the existing stringent pollution norms. So is this really fair? The year 2016 has also begun on a crazy note. There is an odd-even game in progress till January 15, 2016 on the roads of Delhi. How daft can our rule makers get? There is still time to correct such anomalies. The year 2016 has a lot of hope for all of us.

2016 LAUNCHES

MAHINDRA’S PETROL HATCH KUV100 PRICE: `4 LAKH (ESTIMATED) REPORT BY P. THARYAN This could be Mahindra & Mahindra’s Magnum Opus for the year 2016. For the first time, this king of the Indian SUV world which only has diesel engines in its portfolio has announced that it entering the domain of gasoline (petrol) engines. The announcement came just a few days after it was delivered a full body blow following the Supreme Court ruling that all diesel cars with engine capacities more than 2000 cc would be banned in the Delhi National Capital Region. In one terrible stroke, all its leading vehicles that included best sellers like the Bolero, Thar, Scorpio, Xylo and XUV 500 were banned from being sold in Delhi NCR till March 31, 2016. A few days after the Supreme Court body blow Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M) revealed its much awaited compact hatchback codenamed S101, calling it the Mahindra KUV100 (pronounced as KUV ‘1 double Oh’). The vehicle will be launched on January 15, 2016. From the pictures the company has released, one can make out that it’s not a compact SUV, rather it’s a smart hatchback, on

the lines of a compact crossover. From its front aggressive styling, it has the stance of a compact SUV. At Motown India, we expect the starting ex showroom price of the vehicle to be around Rs 4 lakh for the petrol version and around Rs 5 lakh for the diesel car. The company also unveiled an all new, world-class engine family named mFALCON, marking its entry into the ground up petrol space. The “K” in KUV100 stands for the ‘kool’ & trendy generation of youth, while UV represents an SUV. The numeric ‘100’ represents the pecking order of the series which comes in below TUV300 and XUV500. The KUV100 will be powered by the mFALCON, an all-new engine family with options of both petrol (mFALCON, G80) and diesel (mFALCON, D75). Named after a bird of prey, the mFALCON is a compact lightweight engine built to deliver peppy and high performance, much like its

12 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2016

namesake. The 1.2L, 82 HP and dual VVT three-cylinder petrol engine and the 1.2L 77 HP turbocharged three-cylinder diesel engine both deliver high, lowend torque for the perfect SUV performance and an enjoyable drive. The mFALCON G80 is an allaluminium MPFI Petrol Engine which is compact and light weight and meets BS IV emission norms. It is also future emission protected. The 1198cc engine delivers 82bhp @5500 rpm and a peak torque of 114 Nm @3500-3600 rpm. The mFALCON D75 is a turbocharged CRDe (Common Rail Diesel Engine) which meets BS IV emission norms. This engine also future emission protected. The 1198cc engine delivers 77 bhp @3750 rpm and a peak torque of 190 Nm @1750-2250 rpm. The engines will be mated to a manual five-speed

transmission. The aggressive styling of the KUV100 has no match in the Indian affordable hatchback segment. The closest one can get is the Kwid from Renault but with its 800 cc engine, the latter is no match to the brute stance of the KUV100. Compared to crossovers too in the hatch segment, like the Volkswagen Polo Crossover, the Hyundai i20 Active, the Toyota Etios Cross and the Fiat Avventura, the KUV100 is definitely much more rugged and bolder in it is stance. The pinched grille, the smart headlamps, the bulging wheel arches, the sloping roofline, the rear door handles perched high almost in alignment with the c pillar make the car different and appealing. Speaking at the brand name and engine reveal event, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, M&M Ltd. noted “We are all set to create a new

2016 LAUNCHES segment with the launch of the KUV100 which also marks our foray into ground up petrol engines. An ambitious project from the very start, the KUV100, is all set to carve its niche amongst first time car buyers with its unique propositions. I am confident that the KUV100, like its predecessors, will become an extremely popular brand and will be cited for taking Mahindra to a whole new orbit”. Pravin Shah, President & Chief Executive, (Automotive), M&M Ltd. said, “With the evolving aspirations of today’s youth we needed a product that will effectively address their needs for an SUV lifestyle. Being a listening organisation, we identified the need gaps among consumers and started planning for the product. Coming from our state of the art

Dr. Pawan Goenka with the new mFalcon engine manufacturing plant at Chakan, the KUV100 is a no-compromise, next-generation compact SUV

that will set the stage for the emergence of an all new category. While being a market leader in

NEWS the SUV segment, I am sure that with the addition of the KUV100 in our portfolio, we will effectively address the entire gamut of customer segments from entry level to high end SUV with our product portfolio”. Designed in-house and engineered at Mahindra’s world class research and development facility, the Mahindra Research Valley at Chennai, the KUV100’s sculpted body with its prominent hood and high beltline has the design of a trendy urban crossover and elements like the headlamp, styled like wrap round shades, give it a whole new dimension. The KUV100 will be available in 7 colours of Fiery Orange, Flamboyant Red, Dazzling Silver, Aquamarine, Pearl White, Designer Grey and Midnight Black.

In addition to that we also expect the newly updated Accord and Civic to return to India this year, but nothing is concrete as of now. Both cars were pulled out of the market due to poor sales. Would Honda be willing to try it a second time? Only time will tell.

The competition, organised by the IMSC Motorsport with active assistance from Abu Teyang, Director of Transportation, Arunachal Pradesh, and held under the aegis of the FMSCI, saw over 20 teams from across India besides a clutch of daredevils from the North-East region. The event was part of the Arunachal Pradesh’s Orange Festival of Music and Adventure which is designed to promote tourism in the region. It was held in some more beautiful settings along the Dibang and Sineh riverbeds. A stage in the nearby swamps was run in the night before concluding on a artificial course of five obstacles.

The winners with Hari Singh

In the 4X4 Fury challenge the teams battled through terrifying declines, river beds with massive rocks, swamps, 10-foot deep pits, steep hills, and freezing rivers. The force of the Brahmaputra is so fierce, sometimes constructing bridges becomes impossible and it also claims some parts of the bridge of its own at times washing away the pillars that were

constructed. The inhospitable conditions coupled with Central Government apathy when it comes to assistance have in a way stagnated the development in Arunachal Pradesh. The region is almost isolated from the modern world. Supplies and people take days just to get from one place to another. A small example of how the

locals live is when one family in a village wants to build a new house, there are no contractors, labourers, machines, or anything that is called upon. The entire village voluntarily comes to help the family to physically construct the person’s home with natural resources from the forest in return for a similar favour in the future and nothing more.

Coming back to the 4X4 event, the entire competition ran smoothly and despite a couple of mishaps when the vehicles toppled, the competitors walked away unhurt, highlighting the safety measures. Kudos to JK Tyre and the others for bringing in a glimpse of modernity and adventure in the mundane lives of those living at Dambuk. MI

MOTORSPORT Buemi wins Uruguay round FIA Formula E Championship

Jaguar enters Formula E; Trulli Formula E Team exits

Sebastien Buemi, the Renault e.dams star, recharged his title assault with a sensational win in the Julius Baer Punta del Este ePrix. For the first time this season the Renault e.dams star failed to take pole position, but from fifth position on the grid he produced a charging drive, much to the delight of over 10,000 Uruguayan fans to score his fifth career victory. From the word go, he sprinted off the line to instantly take fourth place from Abt Schaeffler’s Lucas di Grassi. The DS Virgin car of Sam Bird and the Dragon Racing entry of Loic Duval soon fell prey to the Swiss, and it was only a matter of time before pole-sitter Jerome D’Ambrosio (Dragon Racing) yielded as well. The move for the lead was met with a huge cheer from the grandstands, and once ahead Buemi showed no signs of relinquishing his grasp on the winner’s trophy. Meanwhile, Mahindra Racing’s Oliver Rowland could only manage a 13th position in the race while his teammate Bruno Senna came in a distant 16th in the final standing.

Another Indian company has made its entry into the world of Formula E. Tata Motors controlled Jaguar has announced its return to global motorsport. In the autumn of 2016, Jaguar will enter the third season of the exciting FIA Formula E Championship as a manufacturer with its own team. FIA Formula E is the world’s first global single-seater championship for electric powered cars. Williams Advanced Engineering will be Technical Partner to the Jaguar Formula E Team and provide extensive motorsport knowledge, combined with high performance EV Systems experience and success. Jaguar Land Rover has a long term relationship with Williams, who partnered with Jaguar on the development of the Jaguar C-X75 plug-in hybrid concept car. The team entry has been granted by Formula E and approved by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). In another development, Trulli Formula E Team has announced that it will leave the FIA Formula E Championship with immediate effect. Trulli joined Formula E ahead of the inaugural season after it took over the entry from Drayson Racing. For the second season the team were one of eight approved manufacturers, but both technical and supply issues with its Motomatica JT-01 forced Trulli to miss the Beijing and Putrajaya ePrix.

Mysorean Urs, driving the Mitsubishi Evo VIII, destroyed the Asia Cup field with relative ease despite encountering set-up problems on the previous day which cost him some time. Having registered for the FMSCI Indian Rally Championship, Urs collected sufficient points to win the title despite finishing Overall second behind Gill who ended an otherwise wretched season on a high, but lost his National crown. “I am obviously delighted to win the Asia Cup and the National championship. We had some problems with the car early on, but we managed to set things right,” said Urs. I would like to congratulate Raj Singh Rathore, Kabir Waraich and Gaurav Chiripal for displaying the grit and determination to secure the top three positions. I commend the professionalism of these drivers. The participants rocked and dazzled the whole Bikaner and I would like to thank each one of them for making this rally a fun filled event. There are a lot of good things to take away from the event and we can now look to build on this performance for the next rallies“. Polaris participated in this challenging and demanding speed event with 7 high output RZR’s including 6 RZR S 800 and a RZR XP Turbo. More than 40 vehicles participated in UDC 2015. Commenting on his victory, ace rallyist Raj Singh Rathore, said,” Ultimate Desert Challenge (UDC) is an all-terrain event never seen before. It has been an extremely positive rally for me, and I am really happy to finish it in the top position . We had a positive and a trouble-free rally and Polaris RZR XP Turbo has been very nice to drive. I don’t think I could have achieved this feat without Polaris. It was fun to be in the fight with fellow rallyists and I’d like to congratulate all of them for participating in what has been a very tough rally for each one of us.”

hile Indians were arguing over odd and even number plates of cars and over the ban of diesel engines above 2,000cc capacity in Delhi NCR, I took out time and visited the state of California in the US to test drive a Model S car from Tesla Motors. I learnt a lot as to why a Tesla car is “ludicrous” and why they are so electrically supercharged. California boasts of all kinds of cars and all kinds of technology driving these cars. From fuel efficient gasoline engines, to eco friendly diesel powertrains and super duper hybrid machines and electric dream technology, this state has it all. The Tesla factory in Fremont, CA is huge and apparently it is one of the world’s most advanced automotive factories. Tesla Motors purchased the facility in 2010 and extensively remodelled it before the first Model S rolled off the line in June 2012. The factory is capable of producing more than 100,000 vehicles annually. The Tesla Motors facility was once home to General Motors and Toyota’s New United Motor

The large 17 inch screen is quite handy! Manufacturing, Inc (NUMMI) from 1984 until the partnership ended in 2009. Here I got to see an array of different variants of Model S, lined up invitingly for people to come and test drive. The Model S comes in both an all-wheel drive as well as a rear wheel drive. The models on display included the 70D All-Wheel Drive (AWD), the 85D AWD, the P85D Performance AWD, the 70 Rear Wheel Drive and

the 85 Rear Wheel Drive. Among the different variants of the Model S, it is the Performance model (P85D Performance AllWheel Drive) that is super exciting. But to really appreciate it, I had to drive the 70D AWD. The 70D too is not a pushover. In fact, this too comes with exciting features and a 70kWh battery that has a 240 miles (386km) range and does 0-60 miles (96km) in a mere 5.2

seconds. The lithium ion batteries have an 8 year infinite mile warranty. Everything about this Tesal Model S is super...the build, the interior comfort, the features, the drive and handling and obviously the technology. Once you sit on the driver’s seat you cannot miss seeing the large 17 inch touchscreen which controls most of the car’s functions.

Opening the all glass panoramic roof, customising the automatic climate control, and changing the radio station all happen with a swipe or a touch. A plethora of functions can be operated through this touch screen whether it is the radio, Bluetooth, USB audio devices or controlling driving personalisation, climate controls and cabin controls. One can also navigate through Google maps, access information on the real time energy consumption and range estimation, synchronise your calendar etc. The touchscreen never gests dated. Software updates happen over the air that adds new features and refresh the touchscreen look and feel. There is so much leg room and seating space, that you can actually

accommodate seven people in this car! Since the super efficient lithium ion batteries are laid out on the floor, the car has a very low centre of gravity thus ensuring that the car is planted to the road even at high speeds. Tesla battery packs have the highest energy density in the industry. To achieve this energy density, Tesla starts with thousands of best-in-class Lithium-ion cells and assembles them into a liquid-cooled battery pack, wrapped in a strong metal enclosure. The battery is optimised for performance, safety, longevity, and cost. Tesla will be building the world’s largest and most advanced battery factory in the state of Nevada in US. in this car. While the All-wheel Drive is available as an option Model S 70D and Model S 85. Model S Performance comes standard with All-Wheel Drive Dual Motor. The car has two motors, one in the front and one in the rear. The result is that the Model S digitally and independently controls torque to the front and rear wheels, which in essence means great traction control in all conditions. Acceleration came so easy for this car. In the Performance model, there is something called the Ludicruous mode wherein acceleration enhances tremendously. As I stepped on the accelerator, the car surged like a race car on a track. Zero to 60 miles per hour (almost 100km per hour) comes in 2.8

seconds. It was impossible to say that it was a 100pc electric vehicle. In terms of driving abilities, it had all the intrinsic advantages of a gasoline powered car, yet it was clean like your early morning dew when it came to environmental preservation. One should remember that unlike a gasoline internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving parts, the only thing that moves in the electric motor is the rotor. The Performance model also had an Auto Pilot mode and on the highway I tested its usefulness. This mode allows the Model S to steer within a lane (A double tap of the cruise control lever and Model S pilots itself with a lane), change lanes with the simple tap of a turn signal, and

manage speed by using active, traffic-aware cruise control. You can also keep your hands off while driving as the car manages to automatically steer the car. Everything is controlled through an array of sensors combined with GPS and high resolution digital maps. Digital control of motors, brakes, and steering helps avoid collisions from the front and sides. It also remarkably prevents the car from wandering off the road. The super intelligence of the car also scans for parking space once you reach your destination. It alerts you when one is available, and once you give a command it does a parallel park. On safety front, apparently the Model S is designed from the ground up to be the safest car

www.motownindia.com

on the road. It has got a 5-star rating in all categories of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash test. Much of its safety is owed to the unique electric drivetrain that sits beneath the car’s aluminum occupant cell in its own subframe. This unique positioning lowers the car’s centre of gravity, which improves handling and minimizes rollover risk. The conventional engine block is replaced with impact absorbing boron steel rails in the Model S. In the event of an accident, eight airbags protect front and rear occupants, and the battery system automatically disconnects the main power source. This electric car has been designed so aerodynamically built

that at high speeds, the rushing winds simply blow their kisses as they swiftly pass by. Obviously battery range is extended as a result. Besides, the smart air suspension lowers the car’s height at highway speeds to reduce its frontal area. Electronically controlled vents stay closed until sensors detect that cooling is necessary. The front bumper routes air beneath the battery’s flat skidplate and past the rear diffuser, resulting in super duper unrestricted speed. Not to miss are the Model S door handles. When a key is in close proximity, they automatically extend. When no longer in use, they retract into the body of the car, creating a seamless surface for air to pass over. With the

Model S, aerodynamics takes a new meaning! Once out of the car you may wonder where the car’s fuel door is. As you approach the driver’s side taillight with a charging connector and the hidden charge port automatically opens. The charging connector cannot be removed until Model S is unlocked. Coming back to India, Mahindra & Mahindra already has an electric car company by the name of Mahindra Reva. It is time for the Indian government to encourage this company to build cars like the Model S and put to an end the silly debate on deteriorating pollution levels. Banning something is easy; Building something useful is a lot tougher! MI

SIMPLY ZIPPY! TATA ZICA

Report: SEEMA PAUL

he Tata Zica from Tata Motors is a refreshingly designed hatchback. It is to be seen whether this product finally captures the imagination of the Indian masses. A one-time confident player in the Indian passenger car segment, Tata Motors has lost a lot of its sheen because of some intense competition. The Bolt and the Zest from its stable did not in particular set the company’s sales charts afire. Nevertheless, with the Zica, the company hopes its fortunes will change. Tata Motor’s small cars (read Indica) and sedans were always a favourite with taxi operators in the country. But with the likes of Toyota Innova and Maruti Dzire and several other successful products capturing this lucrative market, Tata Motors lost a lot of its share in this crucial segment. With the Zica, they

hope to regain this lost ground. The Zica car is a smart looking car. It is based on an all-new platform. Unlike the Bolt and the Zest which had a very “Indica” look about it, this one’s a lot more contemporary in its design. An erstwhile Tata Motors dealer told Motown India that the Zica model was showcased to them several years back and it’s a bit late in the day for the company to bring out the car, especially when rivals have a lot more savvier products. (Motown India cannot agree or disagree with that statement since its team was not invited by Tata Motors for a test drive in Goa). From the pictures sent by the company, the Zica does seem to have a fresh look about it, especially with its large swept back headlamps and the mesh-type grille. The new threedimensional ‘T’ Logo is placed in a semi vertical position on the signature

hexagon grill. The overall design including the rear hatch with smart tail lamps and the smart spoiler spats give the car a contemporary look. Not to miss are the smartly designed 14-inch alloy wheels for the top variant. The interiors also seem bright and smart. We cannot comment on the quality of plastic used for the interiors, but definitely the dashboard looks appealing with its smart buttons and switches. The company, like in its earlier models, has a small steering wheel in this car too, in order to give it a sporty feel. Talking of the dash, the car comes with Connectnext Infotainment system by Harman, complemented by the sporty instrument cluster pods. The central console sports rotary. The company has introduced new segment-first applications like the Turn-by-Turn Navi app and the Juke-Car app. This first-in-segment app displays Turn-by-Turn navigation when connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth. The audio prompts and hard key operations are used to control navigation providing sheer convenience. This app also provides guidance on Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) and Next Maneuver, which helps in simplifying navigation while driving. Along with Bluetooth pairing, it also supports speed volume control, steering wheel mounted information controls and phonebook on-the-fly. The Juke-Car app, a first-insegment feature, utilises mobile hotspot to create a virtual network and host a service for sharing list of available songs in the device. All connected devices can view the song list on the hotspot device. Users can place their requested song queuing. The Juke-Car app then plays the songs one after the other. Enhancing the comfort and convenience of passengers, the car also has user selectable vehicle setup like ‘follow me home’ timer and steering mounted controls. The Interior consists of a geometric texture accented with

chrome handles, knitted fabrics, colour harmony, layered design theme with a dual tone interior, customisable air vents, premium graphics on the fabric and body hugging seat bolsters. The topend variant comes with colour¬ accentuated air conditioning vents in line with the body colour. Then there are also the height adjustable headrest and seat. There are multiple storage spaces in the car. The car has been designed to provide 22 utility spaces, despite keeping the

interior roomy. On top of that it has a luggage space of 240 litres with the added convenience of shopping bag hooks along with markings mentioned on each hook for the weight. A separate partition for the tool kit and smart use of moulded carpets make the boot space very user-friendly.

REVOTRON 1.2L (PETROL ENGINE) AND REVOTORQ 1.05L (DIESEL ENGINE) The Zica will be available in petrol and diesel variants. The

engines are the Revotron 1.2L (petrol engine) and Revotorq 1.05L (diesel engine), indigenously developed by the company inhouse. The Revotron 1.2L is the second new petrol engine from the Revotron series. The Revotron 1.2L delivers a power of 84 bhp and a flat torque of 115 Nm @ 3500 rpm. It is an all¬ aluminum engine, making it light, fuel efficient yet powerful. The three cylinder naturally aspirated engine comes packed with many

new technologies like Variable Cam Timing (VCTi)- which provides ideal cam events at various engine speeds, delivering optimum performance. This also allows ‘internal’ exhaust gas re-circulation to improve the fuel efficiency. The Revotron engine is designed for low-friction performance and comes equipped with a low-weight crankcase set-up and a variable oil pump, it delivers higher fuel efficiency. It has hydraulic lash adjusters, durable chain-drive and an

auto-tensioner at the Front-end Accessory Drive (FEAD) for low cost operation and maintenance. Revotorq 1.05L is the first new diesel engine from the Revotorq series. The Revotorq 1.05L delivers optimum power of 69 bhp for ease of drive, both in city and on highways with the highest torque in the segment for wider engine speed zone - 140 Nm @ 1800-3000 rpm. The engine has dual overhead camshafts, central injectors, optimised valve lift & low friction

crank train to deliver superior fuel efficiency. It comes with a well-balanced turbocharger, electronic throttle control and optimised compression ratio ensuring flat torque delivery for better drivability. It is equipped with a balancer shaft to reduce engine vibrations and allows refined engine operation, resulting in a smoother drive. The engine has an improved timing belt life, auxiliary belt life, oil change interval and fuel filter change intervals, which results in low cost

of ownership.

MULTI-DRIVE MODE: Both these engines have been designed and programmed to deliver superior fuel economy and a peppy driving experience, says the company. They come with a segment-first feature, the Multi-drive mode -City and Eco. With this, it is equivalent to offering the performance of two engines in one. The two drive modes are supported by an advanced Engine Management System (EMS). MI

n the world of wild cats the cheetah is famous for its speed, agility and raw instinct. It is a fleet footed creature which has evolved into one of fastest killing machines in the animal kingdom. What really makes the cheetah so special is the way it has evolved. Every genetic code in its body has purposefully equipped this big cat to achieve speed and maintain its balance in high speed manoeuvres and take downs. You would say a lot of wild cats are

fast but then again they are not the fastest, the most agile or the most graceful beasts out there. Now that you are informed let me tell you my encounter with the petrol powered cheetah of the 160cc motorcycle world. It was six in the morning and I could smell the fresh ocean breeze in pristine Goa. My heart was racing because I had just got behind the bar of a brand new Honda CB Hornet 160R. When I first set eyes on this bike I knew there was something special about

it. The bike doesn’t really scream for attention but is graceful in establishing its presence. Just like the cheetah the 160cc Hornet also has been purposefully equipped to achieve speed and maintain its balance. Pumping power into its paces is the 162.71cc, single cylinder, air cooled, 4-stroke, SI engine. The engine pumps out 15.6bhp at 8500rpm and 14.76Nm of torque at 6500rpm. While these figures may not be so high they are in fact the best the 160cc segment has to offer and help the

Hornet achieve a top speed of 110kmph. Being a Honda you can expect a lot of refinement from this bike. The engine feels smooth and the bike seamlessly accelerates on command. The design and styling on the Hornet make it look like a much bigger bike with a higher capacity engine. The muscular looking tank with forward leaning shrouds and a carbon patterned cover on the tank give the bike an elegant yet edgy and aggressive look. The headlamp also comes with two

positioning lamps and the side indicators have been placed a little higher for increased visibility. The Hornet has a distinct ‘X’ shaped LED tail lamp which adds appeal to the bikes aggressive. The bike also sports a compact two piece muffler and wider rear tyres which provide immense grip while cornering. Riding the Hornet in corners is a real treat, the front tyre profile is a 100/80 R17 the rear is a fat 140/70 R17. The tyres grip the road well and the bike handles like a dream. To enhance the offering Honda has also added 5 spoke split alloy wheels which give the Hornet a very sporty look. The Hornet rides on telescopic forks in the front and a monoshock suspension in the rear. The bike

www.motownindia.com

has a low set seating position and the single saddle provides ample body support for the rider and pillion. Braking on this bike has been facilitated by a 3 pot calliper on 276mm petal disc in the front and a 2 pot calliper on the 220mm petal disc in the rear. The bike comes with a CBS (Combi Brake System) which give the brakes adequate bite on road. The brakes did not lock up but we could feel the CBS at work in panic braking conditions. The Hornet comes with a 12 litre fuel tank and returns almost 62 kilometers to the litre. The switch gear on the bike has been places in an ergonomic manner and feels comfortable to operate. The bike has a fully digital console which can be

operate and read quite easily even at higher speeds. We felt that the switch gear on the bike could have been a bit different from that on Honda’s other models and an engine kill switch could have been added. The bike is available in 5 different colour options which are al quite subtle and look good. We rode the CBS variant of the CB Hornet which is available for Rs. 84,400 (Ex-showroom Delhi). The design philosophy on the bike is quite refreshing and this 160cc cheetah is fun to ride in the city. The Hornet offers a well rounded package of performance, design, mileage and technology. The bike has been priced attractively and definitely offers a lot of bang for your buck. MI

LADAKH AND BACK ON A

MAHINDRA GUSTO Ladakh! The name conjures up visions of snow-capped lofty mountains and equally steep gorges, a royal blue sky spotted with wispy clouds, and icy winds blowing through a barren and brown landscape. Ladakh is probably one of those few places where nature’s beauty is represented in its starkest form. Naturally, a trip to Ladakh tops the wish-list of innumerable adventure-lovers. But the barelythere roads – strewn with rocks of various sizes and forms and often covered with treacherous sheets of thin ice – usually tends to deter wannabe travellers. Given the nature of this inhospitable terrain, most prudent travellers would baulk at the very idea of riding a scooter across treacherous terrains. But Pushpinder Singh Batra, 29, a resident of Kharar, a small town in Punjab, had different ideas. Egged on by his charming wife, Karishma, they decided to circumnavigate Ladakh on their trusted Mahindra Gusto. Just back home after completing the arduous journey in 12 days, Pushpinder shares two interesting anecdotes from this trip.

PUSHPINDER’S DIARY Starting from Kharar on a sunny September morning, it took us almost 10 hours to reach Manali. The next morning, when I approached the government office that issues travel permits to Ladakh, a funny incident happened. The official, in charge of issuing the permit, almost fell off his chair when I told him about my chosen mode of transport. “Are you serious? How can you possibly think of taking on those high roads with a scooty?” To

www.motownindia.com

that, I solemnly answered, “Sir, my Mahindra Gusto is not a scooty. It’s a full-bodied scooter with a 109.6 cc, 4-stroke engine.” By the incredulous look on his face, I could clearly make out that he was not convinced. He issued the permit with the warning that the Mahindra Gusto would not even cross Rohtang Pass. The fact that it did and went much, much beyond had to do with Mahindra Gusto’s sound engineering. To tell you the truth, initially, even I had serious doubts on how much punishment the scooter could endure. So, I posted an enquiry on Mahindra’s Facebook page, asking whether the Mahindra Gusto would be able to undertake such a tough journey and, if yes, whether any modifications were required. To my surprise, I got the feedback from Mahindra Two Wheelers that the Gusto with a torque of 9 Nm @ 5500 rpm would comfortably rise to the challenge posed by the Himalayan terrain. In specific terms, specs such as a superior suspension design (telescopic with air spring in the front) ; Large Tubeless tyres, and a very high ground clearance of 165 mm gave me that much-needed comfort

while planning the trip. Mahindra Two Wheelers Team helped us prep the Gusto for the journey. They were really helpful. We carried extra fuel that was duly fitted on my friend Gursewak’s bike who was accompanying us. The second anecdote relates to our scooter developing a flat tyre on Day 4. With a night’s rest at Sarchu, a favourite halt between Manali and Leh, we had set out towards Rumtse, a small village beyond the Taglang La Pass, which is among the highest motorable roads in the world. We were curious to visit the Rumtse monastery. However, on the slopes towards Rumtse, the Gusto’s front tyre gave in. Until then, we were maintaining

an average speed of about 30 kmph but given the mishap and the condition of the roads, we were forced to reduce the scooter’s speed by 10 kmph. What’s remarkable is that apart from this slight manoeuvring, we did not face any other problem. As we made our way safely down the slope, both Karishma and I thanked Wahe Guru. And, I must say this incident reinforced our faith in our beloved Mahindra Gusto. The journey across Ladakh was tough but the scenic beauty more than compensated for other perils such as freezing temperatures, treacherous roads, and low oxygen levels. Along our beautiful journey, the Mahindra Gusto also got some admirers among the local people due to its Remote Flip Key and Find Me Lamps that turn on with buttons on the key and that surely was a first for many of the local inhabitants. Meanwhile, I did not forget the government official at Manali. DIESEL CARS ABOVE 2000CC ENGINE

Knocked Out! P. THARYAN

O

ut of the blue, the Supreme Court on December 16, 2015 put a blanket ban on sale of all diesel cars in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) that have an engine capacity of 2000 cc or above till March 31, 2016. The ruling came two weeks before the Delhi government’s 15-day odd-even experiment to regulate the number of cars on city roads begins from January 1

to15, 2016. “Why should a rich man travel in a diesel car and pollute the environment?,” a bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur had asked a day before this ruling. The moot point, however, is that rich men may be driving luxury cars like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, but it’s the middle class that drives the cars from Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota, Tata Motors, etc. Besides, with Delhi’s terribly maintained roads, Mahindra SUV vehicles are the ones that are able to withstand

58 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2016

the rough conditions. This decision effectively stopped sale of popular vehicles such as Toyota’s Fortuner and Innova, Mahindra & Mahindra’s Scorpio, XUV 500, Thar, Bolero and Xylo, Tata Motors’ Tata Safari, Safari Storme and Sumo, and Mitsubishi Pajero, among several other vehicles during the ban period (till March 31, 2016), but existing diesel cars can continue to ply. Among the luxury car makers, the biggest blow was reserved for

Mercedes-Benz India and BMW India. The apex court, however, said it would consider a plea for new registrations when Euro-4 diesel engines with improved emission standards are introduced in April 2016. It added that buyers of diesel vehicles should pay environment compensation charge while getting their cars registered. Delhi adds around 1400 new cars to its streets every day (these are mainly small cars from the stables of Maruti Suzuki

www.motownindia.com

COVER REPORT and Hyundai Motor India). It has around 8.5 million vehicles currently plying on its roads. Cars definitely pollute, but worse polluting are the burning of waste, dust raised by construction activities, etc. The SC bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur also banned the entry of trucks registered before 2005 into the city and hiked up by 100pc the Green cess levied

on commercial vehicles entering Delhi. Any commercial vehicle not bound for Delhi will not be allowed to enter the city through entry points at National Highway 1 and 8. Taxi operators, even private ones like Uber and Ola, will have to have a CNG kit installed in them by March 31, 2016. On December 11, 2015, the NGT had banned registration of new diesel vehicles till January 6,

2016 in Delhi amid rising concerns over pollution in the city. It also told the government not to renew the registration of diesel vehicles more than 10 years old. The three prime sources of air pollution in Delhi as well as NCR, according to NGT are burning of municipal waste, dust generated by construction and vehicular pollution. The NGT had addressed the issues related to

waste burning and construction dust in its previous orders. Sadly, waste burning still continues while construction continues in full force in every corner of Delhi and NCR. Motown India magazine compiled a list of vehicles that have been affected by this new Supreme Court decision on banning diesel vehicles with engine capacities of 2 litre plus.

COVER REPORT

Auto Industry is a soft target; SC ban order unfortunate, says SIAM The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers has laid out a series of facts and observations that clearly proves that by banning diesel cars with engine capacities of 2000cc through the December 16, 2015 order of the Supreme Court, the court has merely gone after a soft target (read automobile industry). This order has been passed after totally ignoring the findings of the most summary of the recent study on source apportionment for NCT of Delhi shared with the Court, which mentions that the vehicles are responsible for only 20 pc of the pollution in Delhi, out of which only 14-15pc is attributable to passenger cars. This makes the overall pollution load of passenger cars a miniscule number of just 3 pc. SIAM further noted that the Auto Industry is also concerned on the unavailability of a Comprehensive Action Plan for addressing the issue of air pollution in Delhi. “The Automobile Industry appreciates the concern of the Hon’ble Supreme Court on the high levels of air pollution, specially particulate matter emissions in Delhi. The pollution issue in Delhi needs to be looked at holistically if the objective of improving the

air quality is to be achieved, said SIAM. In light of this, the Hon’ble Supreme Court Order banning private diesel passenger vehicles and SUVs of 2000 cc engine capacity and above is most unfortunate. While this would certainly hurt some segments of the automotive industry, it will not bring about any perceptible improvement in the air quality of Delhi. However, Auto Industry welcomes the Hon’ble Courts direction for controlling pollution from other sources which has been neglected for last couple of decades,” the SIAM noted stated.. Meanwhile, Zakir Merchant, Partner, Khaitan & Co, commenting on the recent ruling by SC on the ban of registrations of diesel vehicles in Delhi stated, “It may be unfortunate for manufacturers to be banned who are meeting emission norms. A review petition on this particular issue with stronger scientific data could be the way forward”. He said, “Emission norms applicable to diesel vehicles are primarily governed by the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. BS-IV standards only apply to certain large cities while the rest of India is

still on BS-III standards. Migration to higher standards is the need of the hour. The order of the Court in part has directed a segment of luxury vehicles which in the ideal world would meet Nitrogen Oxide levels as per Indian standards.”

SIAM REACTION SIAM stated that restricting sales of BS IV compliant vehicles will further delay the proportion of BS IV vehicles on the road, while older BS 1/2/3 vehicles would continue to ply. “If reduction of pollution was the objective, the Hon’ble Court could have encouraged more BS IV vehicles to be sold and could have restricted use of older vehicles that pollute more, as one old vehicle emits emissions equivalent to five new vehicles. Hence, old vehicles entering from outside should also pay environmental compensation tax. Bringing in better technology to replace older technologies would have been more effective in meeting the challenge of pollution and air quality,” SIAM observed.

NO COMPREHENSIVE ACTION PLAN The Auto Industry is also concerned on the unavailability of a Comprehensive Action Plan for

addressing the issue of air pollution in Delhi, SIAM stated. Way back in the year 2003, the Auto Fuel Policy had recommended several measures to address the issue of air pollution. Out of these, only handful of recommendations concerning the auto industry was implemented while no action was taken on the other causes of pollution. “Single minded approach to address only the auto industry which is a soft target has resulted in high pollution continuing in Delhi, despite of auto industry moving rapidly to BS IV norms within a short period of 10 years – a feat not performed by any other country till date. It is distressing to note that lessons from the past have not been learnt,” SIAM said in a press note. Historical data shows that the pollution levels in Delhi always rise from September to December and always starts falling from January till August onwards, whether the number of vehicles increases or not. Therefore, taking any decision to ban a certain segment of vehicles based on rising pollution from September to December would not yield the desired result. SIAM suggested the following measures if pollution has to be effectively addressed:-

Blame it on the cars!!!

COVER REPORT a) Complete the construction of bypasses in Delhi, which has been delayed for several years, so that the truck traffic not destined for Delhi could be effectively diverted. b) Have accountability to ensure

that burning of biomass and paddy fields is immediately stopped in and around NCR. c) Employ dust collectors and vacuum cleaners to clean the dust on the road kerb-sides

d) Urgently lay down a policy for remove and scrappage of old and highly polluting vehicles off the road. e) Constitute an Expert Committee consisting of all

stakeholders to draw up an holistic action plan for short, medium and long term with quantifiable targets based upon data to ensure sustained air quality improvements.

No cap on number of diesel powered vehicles, says Govt Even while the Supreme Court banned diesel cars in Delhi NCR, the Government said it is not considering putting any cap on the number of diesel vehicles including passenger cars registered every year. This information was given by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises G.M. Siddeshwara in a written reply in Lok Sabha on December 8, 2015. Meanwhile, the years 2013-14 and 2014-15 have only seen a negative growth when it comes with domestic sales of diesel vehicles that include passenger cars, utility vehicles and vans. Shocked Dr Goenka says diesel vehicles have become “whipping boy” Speaking to the media a few days before the Supreme Court ruling and commenting on the National Green Tribunal decision to ban diesel cars in the National Capital Region (NCR), Dr. Pawan Goenka, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, noted that “diesel vehicles have become the whipping boy” and are being seen as the “biggest villains”. “Over the years diesel fuel and vehicles have become a favourite whipping boy in our country,” he said. He asked that “when our product is meeting all laws of the land how can it be banned overnight.” Dr Goenka said the debate on pollution was not new and in fact started in 1999 when the Supreme Court made it clear that no distinction was to be made between diesel and petrol fuel when it came to curbing pollution. “In 1999 an application was made to the Supreme Court to ban diesel vehicles in Delhi and the court made a decision that we implement emission norms and not look at the fuel

www.motownindia.com

diesel or petrol. The court said that BS II norms should be implemented immediately for diesel and petrol. Therefore the question of differentiating diesel and petrol was kind of settled by the Supreme Court in 1999. Since then the emission norms were made tighter for both diesel and petrol and therefore I don’t know why once again diesel is being looked at as the culprit even thought the vehicles sold today are meeting all the emission norms being prescribed by the Government of India,” he pointed out. “I am an engineer and as an engineer I only understand scientific data and cannot be swayed by directional unquantified statements. I would like to put some facts in front of you. These facts have been talked about in bits and pieces over a few years. I believe that all the hard work being done by our engineers and scientists in the last 15 years to make vehicles cleaner has been thrown out off the window by one order given

by NGT,” Dr Goenka stated. Putting things in the right perspective, Dr Goenka said by introducing the BS IV emission norms, the PM level of 2.5 had come down by 82 pc and NOx by 51pc and in going from BS IV to BS V the PM level will come down by another 80pc and NOx by another 36pc. “The fact is that BS V implementation has been delayed by almost 3 years from the original plan that we had because of late introduction of BS IV fuels throughout the country. BS IV should have come by 2014 as per the original plan and BS V should be coming about now. But it is delayed by 3 years as BS IV fuels were not available throughout the country in the time frame,” he explained. He said the government needs to look at the pollution issue in a “holistic manner”. “Why not ban construction,” he said, alluding to the fact that there are a lot more

industries and activities that are causing pollution and banning them was not the solution. “I find it amazing that diesel vehicle is made culprit,” he said. “One can say banning diesel will improve the air quality in Delhi but we have to look at many more things and look at it in a holistic manner. If we were to ban things then many things can be banned to improve air quality. Why not ban construction? If you ban construction then air quality will also improve. It is a ridiculous thing to do but I am just making a point,” he said.

On the one hand while Autodesk softwares are put to use in industries like architecture, building, construction, and media and entertainment industries— including the last 19 Academy Award winners for Best Visual Effects, on the other, today’s automotive players, whether big or small cannot ignore the immense contribution they make to their industry in the design and development of products. Speaking to Motown India at the three-day event in Las Vegas, Diego R Tamburini, Manufacturing Industry Strategist, Industry Strategy & Marketing, Autodesk, Inc noted that for the automotive industry specifically, his company has broadly five areas or segments: 1) Industrial Design and Visualisation, 2) Mechanical Design & Engineering, 3) Systems

Alias software is used by every automotive company in their industrial design. “On the simulation side, we have Moldflow which is the leading tool to simulate injection moulding. It was a recent acquisition, around two to three years ago. Before that Autodesk was the biggest player in injection moulding simulation. On the manufacturing side we have a tool by the name of Delcam. It is a household name in manufacturing. It helps in generating a code to drive the numerically controlled manufacturing machines like the lathes, drills, milling machines, etc. From the 3D model, you take it into Delcam and it generates instructions to manufacture,” he explained.

A BIG BOON FOR AUTOMOTIVE PLAYERS Autodesk softwares have helped not only OEMs but also tier I, II, and III players in their businesses. Among OEMs not just the big ones, but even start ups like

Liverpool (England)-based Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) have benefitted immensely in bringing out their products (in their case the BAC Mono single seater sports car). In one of the Innovation forums, “It’s a New Innovation Game, Baby”, Ian Briggs, Co-Founder, BAC remarked, “We didn’t want a car for driving from point A to point B. We wanted to create a piece of sports equipment for the extreme sport of driving...We developed a clay model checked against our early sketches. All the time, with the dull, brown clay, we needed to start playing around with design before it was digitised.... We used Autodesk CFD software to develop innovative solutions - sometimes solutions that you wouldn’t normally even imagine.” Briggs told the audience that it was indeed a big challenge for the transition of BAC as a design company into a car manufacturer. BAC was set up by Ian and Neill Briggs in 2009. Since then they have developed the Mono, a single seater sports car for the

uber rich (Mono pricing starts around $200,000). The BAC design team also develops each Mono around the dimensions of the driver. That is not all, everything about the car has an element of extreme refinement, power and performance. The 2.5 litre four cylinder engine delivers 305 bhp and does 0 to almost 100km in around 2.8 seconds. The car could not have got into the real world had it not been for Autodesk softwares such as Alias AutoStudio, Helius PFA, Inventor, Moldflow, PLM 360, Recap 360 and VRED. Briggs Automotive Company produces this highly bespoke single-seater supercar at their plant in England and sells it to elite customers across the globe. Recently the company set up its dealership in Hong Kong in order to address the Asia Pacific markets. Said Diego R Tamburini, “One customer of our which we are highlighting a lot is Briggs Automotive Company....We love them because they are our

customers. They are a small company, for example they cannot do wind tunnel analyses because it is very expensive. So they use our tools, especially computational fluid analyses, to at least bring down their wind tunnel analyses. They fix most of their problems virtually through software. At some point they have to go to the wind tunnel. But without having to go there maybe ten times, they may have to go there twice. They have said in their presentation before that they would not have been able to compete if they did not have digital prototyping tools.” Simon Alford, Sr. Manager, Automotive Products, Autodesk Ltd, UK also agreed that the tools his company offers are not only for major OEMs. “They are equally applicable to start ups. We have a collection of tools to support start ups, from sketching, designing, fast concept modelling, Alias surface modelling, simulation, etc and these tools have empowered companies like BAC to create these beautiful and often complex organic sculpted forms,” he stated.

INTERVIEW WITH DIEGO R TAMBURINI Manufacturing Industry Strategist, Industry Strategy & Marketing, Autodesk, Inc, USA Your job is that of a Manufacturing Industry Strategist at Autodesk, so what does it entail? It involves two things. Internally, I am an industry analyst to help the product and marketing teams to get their strategies right. I do not set the strategies for them; rather I help them build their strategies. These strategies are for or software solutions and services for our manufacturing customers. We do not do manufacturing per se ourselves, we do software tools. Can you explain the tools that you offer to your customers? When I talk of tools, these are

It involves planning of the manufacturing processes like the sequence of operation, the layout of machines in the factory flow, etc. Are these tools used in areas beyond automotive? Yes, of course. For example VRED is our tool for visualisation of

surfaces. It makes this beautiful photographic quality renders of 3D models. Of course, automotive is a sweet spot for that. You could render anything, any 3D model. Some of the tools were specifically developed for automotive. Some are generic mechanical engineering tools that are kind of pitched to the automotive industry. Which are these tools that are popular in the automotive industry? From Autodesk we offer VRED, which is very popular. Alias software is used by every automotive company in their industrial design. It helps in generating a code to drive the numerically controlled manufacturing machines like the lathes, drills, milling machines, etc. From the 3D model, you take it into Delcam and it generates instructions to manufacture. Is it fair to assume that all automotive players whether it is a car manufacturer, a heavy vehicle manufacturer or a twowheeler manufacturer, use your tools at some stage or the other? Yes, they either have our tools or our competitors or a combination of our tools. No automotive manufacturer can actually do without these tools. These tools are actually enabling start ups in the automotive industry, which was previously unheard of, to generate very competitive products. One customer of our which we are highlighting a lot is Briggs Automotive Company (BAC). They manufacture street legal cars that look like race cars. It was a company started by five people in Liverpool in England. Because of the availability of tools like these, they are able to compete with the Porsches and the Ferraris. They have come out with the car BAC Mono. We love them because they are our customers. They are a small company, for example they cannot do wind tunnel analyses because it is very expensive. So they use our tools, especially computational fluid analyses, to at least bring down their wind tunnel analyses. They fix most of their problems virtually through software. their presentation before that they would not have been able to compete if they did not have digital prototyping tools. Of your total Autodesk business, how much comes from the automotive industry? In Autodesk we have three big divisions. We have manufacturing, we have architecture, engineering and construction and we have media and entertainment. Architecture is the largest in terms of business Diego Tamburini generated. This is because historically we started with I think we need a new breed of AutoCAD. Manufacturing is tools. I shall give you an example. second and within manufacturing The main driver of composites we have three segments. These being used in vehicles is light are Automotive, Industrial weighting. now loads of software and electronics in a car are working together. Thus the tools to design, simulate and to manage information, now they need to know about software and electronics. The tools need to evolve. This is done by either adding new tools from scratch or adding capabilities to the existing tools. Are your tools a way of life for automotive companies in the western world or is it much in demand among companies in developing countries like India? The biggest scope of doing business in several countries is moving from 2D to 3D. In fact it is a kind of stumbling block which is preventing many automotive companies from really benefitting from digital prototyping. We have noticed that in developing countries there are several who have been AutoCAD customers for decades. They find it difficult to move to 3D. But once they do it, they realise that the information they get is much more efficient for their downstream processes. You cannot simulate a 2D model. You cannot create manufacturing instructions from a 2D drawing. Once they realise this, they realise its true potential. The main thing about 3D is the shape, you are defining the geometry. Let’s assume there is a tier I supplier of brakes. They define the brake disc in 3D. That digital file becomes the design and now the supplier can define materials on that disc. And with the materials and the geometry, one can run analyses and simulations, how much it can heat when brakes are applied, how much it will deform, that digital information can be used for analyses, for manufacturing. It becomes the single source of information about the product. The benefits our tools give is that it leads to increased efficiency in the product development life cycle. Once you have the product in a

www.motownindia.com

NEWS digital form, many stakeholders can use it. And the fact that you can do more tests digitally, it leads to better quality. Of course you have to do a lot of physical tests in order to get certified etc. But by going digital, the efficiency of their operations and the quality of their products go up significantly. Many automotive companies today have digital prototyping tools.

You cannot run an automotive company today without digital prototyping. Within the automotive industry, the supplier chain is also an integral part. Are your tools in demand here too? Many of our customers are automotive component suppliers. They are tier I, II and III players.

As you move from I to II to III, the smaller the companies are. They adopt these tools faster. They realise that not only are these tools efficient and can do things economically, but they also communicate better with the OEMs. You can collaborate more easily over a digital file than over a paper. For collaboration for the components supplier, digital

prototyping is key. Since the companies are smaller and they do not have major resources, our tools are very attractive because we offer subscriptions. They need not buy our tools for prices as high as US $ 10,000 but can subscribe to our tools for a year or so. They can also ramp up their subscriptions in case they get a big order from the OEM.

INTERVIEW WITH SIMON ALFORD

Sr. Manager, Automotive Products, Autodesk Ltd, UK Are the tools for the automotive industry tailor made or are they made to be used across the industry? Autodesk has a huge stronghold in automotive design. My role involves tools like Alias, VRED, Alias SpeedForm and Stuido Wall. The products that we manage are largely focussed on automotive design. Design has two or three key elements. It can be broken down into sketches, conceptual design which is fast modelling to explore themes and concepts very quickly, and then finally production-ising those designs. Our tool Alias is an altering tool and is used for creating surface forms. We also have the VRED tool (it is a German tool), we acquired it three years ago. That is a visualisation software. That supports the entire process in automotive design right through to the customers point of sales. When you walk into a showroom and you want to configure your vehicle, you can look at an online configurator—you can select the type of model you are interested in, the different variants and options, and then you can see that in real time using our VRED technology. Our VRED visualisation tool works all the way across automotive. We also have an automotive factory solution for designing the factory layout. How many different tools can you offer to an automotive

www.motownindia.com

client? We have a tool called SketchBook Pro. As you would see a designer initially they sketch a very artistically looking form. Then they need to capture that in a 3D digital form. The tool that we use there is something called Alias SpeedForm. In the process they create a full size clay model. This clay modelling process is also available in digital form. This is called virtual clay modelling. This is based on a technology that is water tight and enables people to create the forms without worrying about the kind of complexity. Then they start to identify on what kind of design to invest in, and then the process shifts to capturing the surface data so that we overcome manufacturing constraints and build in more detail. We use Alias Surface tools. These are standard concept tool used by OEMs world over. It is not just an automotive tool but is used in industrial design, consumer products, jewellery, etc. It is unique. Does that mean clay modelling days are over, now that you have tools that let you do that in the virtual world? It does not replace the clay. It complements the clay. Sometimes it happens ahead of the clay model. It is a real enabler. A designer may sketch in 2D but that

designer is not the one who generates the 3D form. That is the job of a digital sculptor. They take that data and then they mill the clay. They build a clay model, they overbuild it, add more clay to a full size car, and then they use fix axis milling to machine the shape of the virtual clay tool. This happens throughout the design process. You have a case where it was captured in digital form and the digital form is leading the physical. When it is in physical clay now they scrape it and make changes and that is fed back into the digital process. I do not think the clay will ever go away. It is a very valuable form of visualising a design to everyone in the studio. Of course, you can touch and feel it too.

Are the tools that you offer to your clients upgraded regularly? We have a commitment to our customers to provide continuous subscriber value. We are continuously driving to improve our products and enhancements to our products and introduce new technology that enhances the designer’s capability to design new patterns. The tools are not only for major OEMs. They are equally applicable to start ups. We have a collection of tools to support start ups, from sketching, designing, fast concept modelling, Alias surface modelling, simulation, etc and these tools have empowered companies like BAC to create these beautiful and often complex organic sculpted forms.

TECHNOLOGY

Emergency braking and lane assist systems on the rise, says Bosch evaluation Driver assistance systems are playing an increasingly greater role when it comes to purchasing a car. The importance of lane assist and automatic emergency braking systems in particular has grown significantly. According to a Bosch evaluation based on the 2014 registration statistics, one in five of the nearly three million newly registered passenger cars in Germany last year were equipped with such systems. By way of comparison, the evaluation for 2013 revealed that the two assistance systems featured in only one in ten new cars. The Bosch board of management member Dr. Dirk Hoheisel welcomes the positive trend: “Driver assistance systems can only make traffic safer if they are widely used.” In Germany alone, up to 72 percent of rear-end collisions resulting in injury could be prevented if all vehicles were equipped with an emergency braking system. According to

Bosch accident research, lane keeping support can prevent up to 28 percent of accidents resulting in injury that are caused by drivers accidentally leaving their lanes. Technical requirement found in increasing number of modern cars The added degree of safety that driver assistance systems provide is one key reason for their growing popularity. Automatic emergency braking systems in particular are also benefiting from the new Euro NCAP ratings scheme. From 2016, new vehicles must have a predictive pedestrian protection feature if automakers wish to receive the European consumer association’s top five-star rating. Driven by changes to the testing specifications and fostered by decreasing costs, an increasing number of modern passenger cars are equipped with sensors that monitor their surroundings. This trend is reflected in Bosch’s sales figures as well: radar and video sensor sales will once again double in 2015.

74 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2016

One surround sensor facilitates several driver assistance systems Bosch is the world market leader for radar sensors with 77 GHz technology, and 2016 is poised to see the production of the ten-millionth radar sensor. With its mid-range radar sensor (MRR), Bosch has made radar technology affordable for the general market. The MRR is used, for example, in the VW Polo and Golf, which means that it can be found in the price-sensitive segment for small and compact cars. One sensor can serve as the basis for several driver assistance systems. Apart from an emergency braking system, the MRR also facilitates adaptive cruise control (ACC). ACC automatically maintains both the driver’s chosen speed and a programmed safe distance to the vehicle in front. When combined with a rear-end collision warning system, the ACC can reduce the amount of heavy braking on freeways by 67 percent. It also results in 73 percent fewer

instances of tailgating. ACC was found in eight percent of all new cars in 2014, which is twice as many vehicles with this technology as after the first Bosch evaluation a year before. One in every four new passenger cars can detect when drivers are tired The number of new cars equipped with road sign recognition and drowsiness recognition systems also grew – each by two percentage points over 2013. Six percent of all cars that were newly registered last year are able to recognize certain traffic signs on the side of the road with the help of a video camera. The information is then shown as a symbol on the dashboard display and helps drivers to navigate the “road sign jungle.” The drowsiness recognition system was installed in one-quarter of all new cars in 2014. Bosch’s solution uses the steering angle sensor and electric power steering to constantly analyze the driver’s

www.motownindia.com

TECHNOLOGY steering behavior for typical signs of drowsiness. The system immediately registers small, abrupt steering maneuvers, and when it factors in additional parameters, such as the length of the drive and the time of day, it recognizes signs of the onset of drowsiness. Before the driver threatens to nod off, the drowsiness recognition system warns him or her in due time to pull over for a break. Parking assistance systems are the most common in new cars Intelligent headlight control automatically switches on the high beams outside built-up areas as long as it does not detect any vehicles ahead or any oncoming traffic. It also constantly adjusts the headlights to the course of the road. Systems that are only capable of continuously adjusting low-beam headlights were not included in the latest evaluation. As a result, the proportion of vehicles fitted with intelligent headlight control has decreased. In 2014, it featured in only 13 percent of newly registered passenger cars. For the first time, Bosch included parking assistance systems in its evaluation. They include parking aids based on ultrasonic sensors, which use acoustic signals to inform drivers of the distance between the vehicle and obstacles while parking, as well as reversing cameras and parking assistants. The latter also take control of the steering when parking, while the driver remains in charge of accelerating and braking. In 2014,

according to the Bosch study, one in two (52 percent) newly registered cars in Germany was equipped with parking assistance systems, which makes them the most common assistance system in new cars. Different countries – but similar preferences for driver assistance systems Parking assistance systems are very popular outside Germany as well. In 2014, every second new car (50 percent) in Belgium as well as the Netherlands also came equipped with such systems, which are also found in 19 percent of newly registered passenger cars

in the United Kingdom. Automatic emergency braking systems are even more common in Belgium than in Germany. One in four newly registered passenger cars there support drivers with braking when encountering an obstacle. In the Netherlands, 17 percent of new cars are capable of providing such support, while the same is true of eleven percent in Spain and five percent in the United Kingdom. A look at the other EU countries with respect to lane keeping support reveals that 14 percent of new cars in Belgium in 2014 were equipped with such a system, eleven percent

in the Netherlands, nine percent in Spain, and six percent in the United Kingdom. Bosch study based on the 2014 statistics for newly registered cars To conduct its evaluation of driver assistance systems, Bosch used data from the service provider Polk and the German Federal Motor Transport Authority’s 2014 statistics for newly registered cars. On this basis, Bosch identified the most important vehicle models in each segment. Bosch then examined the lists of vehicle features to determine what driver assistance systems were offered.

New lightweight Bosch M Li-ion motorcycle battery The new Bosch M Li-ion battery for motorcycles, scooters, quads and jet skis is a real powerhouse. Thanks to its innovative lithium-ion technology, it features just one third of the weight of comparable lead-acid batteries. Due to the usually pretty high installation position of batteries in motorised two-wheelers, the particularly lightweight M Li-ion battery can even reduce the bikes’ centre of gravity thus optimising its driveability and handling. In addition, the new battery features a deep-cycle resistance which is up to ten times higher than in case of conventional batteries. It is particularly vibration-resistant and can be installed in any position. Thanks to its low self-discharge rate, the lithium-ion battery maintains its charge up to four times longer thus allowing it to overcome extended winter breaks without any problems. On time for the sales launch, the Bosch M Li-ion battery is available for all common motorised two-wheelers, quads and jet skis on the market. Using the innovative lithium-ion technology, Bosch will continue to expand its range of starter batteries in future.

INTERVIEW

Interview with RAJEEV MISHRA Director, India & AMEA, UM India Two Wheelers Pvt. Ltd.

Report: P.THARYAN UM is a motorcycle brand born in USA. Can you briefly tell us about your global presence and the products sold across the world? UM is a brand born in America. Our head office is in Miami and we started our journey way back in the year 2000. We started with designing bikes and later we started manufacturing and selling these bikes. Currently we are present in almost 35 countries and we have got more than 1500 stores across the globe. We are the leader in most countries in Latin America where we are competing with Indian brands. We are also doing well in the African and Asian markets. Of late we have started expansion in the Asian and South Asian market. In the ASEAN market we are going to develop our export and manufacturing hub in Philippines and Thailand. So our plans are very robust and currently we are covering most of the African countries from China. In Latin America we are covering the market from Venezuela in Mexico. We are planning to cover the South Asian countries from Thailand and India. We have a complete range of products from scooters to cruiser bikes. But since it is an American company the DNA is of a cruiser bike. We are focusing on cruiser bikes in most countries but we have a complete range from 100cc to 500cc. We have sports, commuter bikes, scooters, step-through bikes for Asian and other markets. It depends on the market we are in. In the African market we have 100cc - 150cc. The South Asian market is a little different since it is a growing market we need higher cc products. So we have 250cc, 300cc, 200cc, etc. The Latin American market is very varied. If you go to Chile

and Colombia it is 100cc-150cc while Brazil is 200cc. We have a product ranging from sports, dual sports, dirt bikes, scooters, cruisers and step-through. We sell these across the world under the UM brand. You signed a joint venture agreement with Lohia Auto in September 2014. Can you tell us what has been the progress of this JV? September 2014 was the time when we had indicated that the product will be launched in the second half of the year of 2015. But with motorcycle development and localisation it will take a little time. The new plant coming up in Kashipur has the basic infrastructure. But the assembly line is being set up and a completely new line has

76 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2016

come up which took a little time. Now we are ready with our plant. The product took some time because we thought that unless we localise these components the cost would be on the higher side and we will not be able to offer what we have been committing to Indian consumers. So to live up to the commitment we began localising a lot of components and today we have 60pc localisation. We are now set to start assembly. We have begun assembling sample bikes for road tests this month. From next month we will start the trial. From February 2016 onward we will begin commercial assembly. We have marked certain markets on the basis of the industry size and the motorcycle sales in terms of cruiser bikes. In India we will launch only cruiser bikes

as of now. Considering that we have appointed dealers in 25 towns and a pan India presence will be there. We are covering every market which is important in terms of cruiser bike sales. Currently we have 35 dealers and by the time we launch in the Auto Expo 2016 we will be having almost 50 dealers on board. How many models will you be launching initially? We will be launching three models for Indian consumers. To begin with during the Auto Expo 2016 we will offer two products and later on by the end of June the third bike will be introduced. So we will start with three models. What about indigenisation levels of these motorcycles? As we move forward the Make

www.motownindia.com

INTERVIEW in India is at the back of our mind and we are going to move towards a 100pc localisation figure. But it will happen in phases as certain things will take some time. Almost 90pc localisation by the end of 2016 and by 2017 we should have a 100pc localisation in India. Is there an export potential for these motorcycles from India? Yes it has a huge potential. Particularly in the European market and we displayed these bikes in AICMA in Italy. The response has been phenomenal. We have a distributor in UK, France and certain other European markets like Romania and Bulgaria. We see a huge scope for these bikes and Make in India has a lot of credibility and this carries not only to European and South Asian markets where people look at these bikes with respect as made in India bikes are considered to be quality products. We look forward to export these products to the South Asian and European Markets.

What is the engine capacity of the bikes coming in? In the Indian market there are a lot of cruiser bikes coming in of late. If you see in 2013 HarleyDavidson entered and after that a few more products came up. There has been a desire to have a bike which can suit the middle class. Most of the bikes are expensive and are heavy on the pocket. The middle class doesn’t have many choices. Secondly, when consumers are asked they say they are looking for the best of both worlds. They want sports bikes and cruiser bikes. The cruiser bike culture has not percolated down to the middle class consumers. They still believe that the sports bikes are best because of speed and power. When we surveyed the market we saw that most consumers are looking for speed and power of a sports bike and the comfort of a cruiser bike. Keeping this in mind we started designing the bikes for the Indian market and this is a completely new product being launched in

India. So it will have power and pick-up of a sports bike and the comfort of a cruiser bike. So we call it a sports cruiser bike. Having said that we also have the option of going up and down in engine capacity but we aimed at giving the optimum product at the optimum cost. So going above 500cc probably would be the choice but then it would have deprived most of customers in terms of affordability. If we go below 200cc then it loses power and pick-up. So the optimum was 300cc and we will bring in 300cc to be precise a 280cc engine which will be water cooled, four valve, high speed and 27bhp engine. So consumers will be pleasantly surprised with power and pick-up at the same time

enjoy the comfort of driving a cruiser bike on highways. The Auto Expo is around the corner can we see some pleasant surprises from your company? We are going to come out with certain products to surprise the consumers. We are looking forward to showcasing these products. One surprise is that we will be launching two products. The second surprise is that we will be bringing some future products to showcase and for the consumers to evaluate and for us to take their feedback.

Renegade Sport will be showcased at the 13th Auto Expo 2016
