CAR NEWS
Base variant of Renault Duster scores Zero Stars in Global NCAP crash test The base variant of the Indian made Renault Duster has scored a rating of zero stars according to a Global NCAP test. The international organisation has been conducting a campaign ‘#SaferCarsForIndia’ under which it has tested multiple indigenously made cars. The base version of the Duster comes without any airbags and at the request of Renault, a variant with optional driver airbag was also tested. The Duster has been one of the most popular models for the French auto maker in India and has sold in big numbers previously. In its base version the compact SUV proves to be unsafe as per the Global NCAP test results. The tests showed that a lack of airbags cause driver injuries to be unacceptably high. Global NCAP has given the base version zero stars for adult occupant protection. The same variant has scored 2 stars for rear seat child occupant protection. Renault asked Global NCAP to conduct a test on another version of the Duster after the first test. The company recommended a variant which included a single driver airbag. This increased the Duster’s rating to 3 stars for the adult occupant protection. However, rear seat child protection remained at 2 stars. Investigating further, the international organisation discovered that a single airbag version of the Duster tested by Latin
NCAP in 2015 scored 4 stars. The Indian Duster’s airbag was found to be smaller than that of the Latin American Duster. David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP, said, “It is troubling that during the UN Road Safety Week we yet again encounter a zero star car in our crash testing in India. Renault produces the Duster in a number of markets and yet it seems content to provide a version for India which falls so far short on safety. The version of the Duster with an airbag scores three stars, but this too fell short as it was fitted with a smaller airbag. A model with a correctly sized airbag should be provided as standard.” Rohit Baluja, President of the Institute of Road Traffic Education said, “The maximum speed limit for passenger cars in India has been notified as high as
100kph. Highways in India are witnessing very high speeds of Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) and therefore it is of utmost importance that our new generation cars are built to the highest safety standards. The Renault Duster has been created as a sporty vehicle and drivers tend to drive these at high speeds. Renault must make the Duster with an airbag as standard, as they do in other parts of the world. Indian consumers should no longer be subject to second class status on occupant protection from global manufacturers who achieve high levels of safety in other markets. “The Prime Minister’s call for ‘Made in India’ should be well respected by car manufacturers to demonstrate that Indian cars are as safe as the best produced in the developed world.”

CAR NEWS ONE MILLIONTH PORSCHE 911 ROLLS OFF PRODUCTION LINE It was a few years back in 2015 that the Porsche 911 (pronounced Nine Eleven) had turned 50. And now on May 11, 2017, Porsche (part of the Volkswagen Group of Germany) rolled out the one millionth Porsche 911 from its factory in Zuffenhausen in Germany. The one millionth model rolled off the production line – a Carrera S in the special colour “Irish Green”, with numerous exclusive features following the original 911 from 1963. The two-door car remains the most strategically important model in the product range and makes a huge contribution to maintaining Porsche’s position as one of the most profitable car manufacturers in the world. Not only has the car graced the garages and hearts of customers all over the world, but it has also starred in some classic English films like ‘Annie Hall’ and ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’. Remember Jordan Belfort’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) garage in the movie ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’? Not to forget singer Janis Joplin singing that “all my friends drive Porsches” in her song ‘Mercedes-Benz’. The roll out was a very emotional and nostalgic moment for Dr Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Porsche AG who has been a part of the development of the 911 since day one.

ISUZU MU-X 4-WHEEL DRIVE
BAAHUBALI Report: Joshua David Luther | Photo: Afsar Baig
B
aahubali, the name invokes masculinity in its purest form. You imagine brawn in epic dimensions and strength insurmountable. That’s the name that came to my lips when I set eyes on this mighty Isuzu mu-X sports utility vehicle. Is the new Isuzu MU-X really the Baahubali of SUVs? I was only too eager to find out.
EXTERNAL DESIGN AND FEATURES
The Isuzu mu-X has a very clean, yet bold looking demeanour. The vehicle looks muscular from all angles. The company says the design is inspired by the Tiger. In front you have the shiny double slat chrome grille. A two-tone front and rear bumpers add to the aggressive looks of the vehicle. The vehicle stands tall on multi-spoke 17 inches diamondcut alloy wheels. Crowning these wheels are muscular flared wheel arches. The projector headlamps give this huge vehicle its strong eyes. The headlamps come with daytime LED lights, while there are fog lamps also for this vehicle. Enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the vehicle are the roof rails that also carry loads up to 60kg. At the rear is a roof spoiler which improves the aerodynamic character of the vehicle. Mounted on its middle is a stop light. While the front has a bold design, the rear too carries forward this character beyond the D-pillar where the rear windscreen seems to be spreading its wings. Broad side steps enable passengers easy entry and exit. These also protect the body sides from minor scratches. The vehicle comes with electrically adjustable and retractable body coloured ORVMs. The Isuzu mu-X is big in size. It is 4825mm long, 1860mm wide and 1840mm tall.
INTERNAL DESIGN AND FEATURES
There is something very masculine about the interiors of the mu-X. It’s subtle, practical and yet not overloaded with technology. The interiors are spacious too. There is ample room inside the cabin in all three rows with extremely comfortable seating for 7 persons. The third row has adequate knee room and headroom for seating 2 adults but it can get a tad bit cramped if you are taller than 5’7”. The Isuzu mu-X comes with power adjusted driver seat, 7 inch touch screen infotainment with navigation and connectivity for USB, AUX and Bluetooth, steering mounted controls, roof mounted 10 inch entertainment screen for 2nd & 3rd row, automatic climate control, 3-row cooling with separate controls for the 2nd & 3rd rows, passive entry and Start/ Stop button ignition, cruise control and one touch easy

tumble seats for the second row. All these features enhance the comfort and convenience of the passengers. Isuzu has added plenty of cubby holes and storage space throughout the cabin. Sadly, the steering is adjustable only for rake and not for reach. The mu-X has a boot space of 235 litres, but that is with all three rows up. The boot space can be extended to 1830 litres which is quite a bit. Even with just the third row folded flat one gets 878 litres of storage space.

ENGINE & PERFORMANCE
The mu-X is powered by a 3.0 litre, 4 cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine. This 4 cylinder mill is good for 174 plus horses and whips up a beastly 380Nm of torque. Peak power comes in at 3600rpm while peak torque lasts from 1800-2800rpm. The engine has been mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. No manual transmission is being offered in either of the variants. The mu-X comes in two variants: 2-Wheel drive and 4-wheel drive. We drove the latter. Isuzu is offering this transmission with a shift lock function and the driver can also manually select gears. What is more, you can select between 2WD
High to 4WD High on the fly upto a speed of 100kmph. This transmission also offers brake shift lock and lock up torque converter on the 3rd, 4th and 5th gears for fuel saving. It also holds the gear on varied gradient ascents and automatically selects a gear on descents to match speed with engine braking. All of this simply adds to this SUV’s capability and convenience, I personally did not feel the need for a manual box. The suspension setup on the Isuzu

mu-X is what thoroughly impressed me. Driving over bad roads, broken tarmac or just over rubble, the suspension gobbles up all undulations with ease, absorbing most of the shocks and jolts. Flooring the accelerator will give you the feeling of a ‘Baahubali’ flexing his muscles. The 3.0 litre Hercules sitting under the hood will roar as the mu-X surges forward. The punchy response from the engine ensures a very spirited and peppy drive on highways and smooth up-shifts cater to a jolt-free ride. In the city the ride is quite smooth and carefree. Take the mu-X on a broken path or down a slushy slope, this SUV will not disappoint you. The ground clearance of this SUV stands at 220mm and it gets a 30.1 degree approach angle which also happens to be the best in the segment. The mu-X has a departure angle of 25.1 degrees and a gradability of 30 degrees. To those who don’t make much of these figures, I shall be plain in saying the mu-X is immensely capable off-road as well. Be it crawling over rocks or small boulders, or driving over gravel
or through slush, the mu-X will take all in its stride without even flinching once. The mu-X comes with features such as ABS with EBD, Traction Control System and Electronic Stability Control. With all these driver aides kicking in at just the right time, the Isuzu mu-X also proves to be a very safe ride on and off tarmac. Noise insulation in the cabin needs to be improved though.
SAFETY FEATURES
The vehicle comes with discs on all four wheels. While the rear ones are larger measuring 318mm the front discs measure 300mm. Braking is progressive and inspires a lot of confidence. Even over loose surfaces we found panic braking to be quite effective with the 4 channel - 4 sensor ABS working spot on. Isuzu has also added EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), 2 Airbags, Hill Start Assist, 3 Point retractable seatbelts with an emergency locking retractor, anti intrusion bars in the doors and many more functions to ensure the safety of occupants.
VERDICT The mu-X is indeed the “Baahubali” of SUVs and has a lot to offer in terms of features, safety and technology. It gets the right blend of materials with excellent fit and finish. Not just its behemoth proportions, but even its capability off the beaten path will surely impress you.

t is obvious that the slates were wiped clean by designers when they took to the drawing boards with the 3rd generation Maruti Suzuki Dzire. The results are quite refreshing. While most of us are used to seeing similarities from one generation of cars to the next, that is not the case with the new Dzire. I can safely tell that this new sedan boasts of unrivaled class and finesse. Premier League? I needed to find out more.
EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES
This sedan’s facade sports angular projector headlamps and a chrome surrounded four slat polygonal grille. The front is bold and instantly makes a statement. An arched hood adds a touch of macho appeal while a curvy belt line running out of the headlamps toward the B-Pillar builds on a dapper character. The headlamps also get LED DRLs which at first glance look a bit plain but blend in well with the overall design scheme. The roof line and belt line on the new Dzire lend the side profile a very refreshing look. While most modern design schemes boast of bold and straight belt lines, the Dzire gets a very striking
one. It emerges from the headlamps in an upward arch running across the A-Pillar. Seamlessly the belt line fuses with the body before the B-Pillar and resurfaces after the B-Pillar running across the C-Pillar in an arched manner. The belt line builds a muscular look over the sculpted wheel arches making the side profile butch and beefy. Moving over to the rear section of the Dzire, we find broad and prominent lines aide a definite character. A solid chrome bar accentuates the mid section of the boot lid and LED tail lamps sprinkle a dash of contemporary flavour. The Dzire also gets eight dual fin 15 inch alloys housed in 185/65 tubeless tyres. The alloys have an elegant design, blending well with the overall scheme of things.
INTERNAL DESIGN AND FEATURES
While the exterior design boasts of elegance, the interiors resonate sophistication. A dual tone beige and black format sets the tone right for a very crisp and symmetrical layout all around the cabin. The infotainment setup is partially biased toward the driver and found to be ergonomically fit. Maruti Suzuki has

“I found the 1.2L petrol engine mated to the 5-speed manual transmission the most impressive amongst the lot. The rev happy nature of this engine proves to be quite thrilling on short sprints. ensured exceptional levels of build quality making the Dzire feel quite solid and well bolted. The front section of the cabin also sports Burl Wood ornamentation on the dash as well as door trims giving this sedan a never like before up-market feel. In terms of technology the Dzire has on offer infotainment system enabled with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link which has connectivity options for Bluetooth, AUX and USB. The Dzire has also been loaded with features like rear parking sensors and camera, automatic headlamps, push button start/stop, keyless entry, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, electronically adjustable and retractable ORVMs, 12V power sockets in the front and rear along with

many more features. In terms of comfort and convenience, the Dzire speaks volumes about progress. Ample features have added to convenience of day to day functions and the in cabin ergonomics is quite commendable. The seats are more than comfortable and Maruti Suzuki has ensured even more space within the cabin. There is more headroom, shoulder room and leg room for occupants. I found myself pleasantly comfortable in the driver seat which provides adequate bolstering. The Dzire can easily seat five average Indian adults. However, the hunch on the floor may prove to be a bother for some. The rear AC vents are a boon for those sitting at the back.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The 3rd generation Dzire has been built on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform which is lighter and gets a slightly rigid chassis. The Dzire is powered by the same engines which were available on the previous version. On offer is a 1.2L, 4 cylinder, VVT petrol engine and a 1.3L, 4 cylinder, DDiS Diesel engine. The powerplants have been offered with options of a 5-speed AMT and a 5-speed manual. I found the 1.2L petrol engine mated to the 5-speed manual transmission the most impressive amongst the lot. rev happy nature of this engine proves to be quite thrilling on short sprints. On highways you can really stretch the gears out and the Dzire redlines quite easily. What makes things a little more entertaining is the smooth operation of gear shifts and a light clutch. The same engine when mated to the 5-speed AMT still proves to be quite a spirited drive. While ambling around in traffic I did not feel disconcerted with the gearshifts but if you step down on the accelerator pedal you will surely notice them. The gear shift response on the AMT is reasonably quick but a scope for improvement is always there. Even in Manual mode, gear
shifts are quick and you can redline a little beyond 6000rpm with the transmission holding the gear. While on inclines the gear box is quick to downshift to the right gear and you get enough torque to power you up the slope. The petrol motor feels light
www.motownindia.com
#MARUTISUZUKIDZIRE and fleet footed to drive around in the city and on highways. The buildup of revs and matching power outputs are all in a linear fashion. The 1.3L, 4 cylinder, turbocharged diesel on the other hand is punchy in its mannerisms. This was instantly noticeable on the previous generations of the Dzire but the turbo spool now is a little more subtle and the power delivery feels smoother. Nonetheless, the diesel is fun to drive and quite thrilling on highways as well. The sedan is quick through the first two gears with the 3rd, 4th and 5th having longer legs. The diesel mill belts out 73.7bhp at 4000rpm and bruises the road with 190Nm of torque at 2000rpm. Peak power comes a little high in the band with the engine redlining at 5000rpm. The 5-speed AMT mated to this diesel engine performs admirably well. Shifts come in quick and the sedan gathers speed quite easily. Even on the diesel, while ambling around in city traffic gear shifts are rather smooth and barely noticeable. The same cannot be said if you are flooring it. The 1.3L diesel caters to a very lively drive and feels much smoother than before. While the diesel returns close to 28.4kms to a litre the 1.2L petrol returns almost 22kmpl. Both mileage figures are arguably the best in segment. The suspension setup on the new Dzire is slightly on the softer side and the vehicle rolls over bad roads rather easily. Most undulations and bumps are soaked in quite well by the suspension. Maruti has dropped the ground clearance to 163mm but that does not really affect the vehicles performance as we did not find one instance of it bottoming out, be it over breakers or bad roads. The slightly stiffer chassis and suspension setup cater to a stable ride with a display of good control even at high speeds. Braking is facilitated via discs in the front and drum brakes in the rear. The Dzire’s braking is progressive and inspires confidence. Overall, there has definitely been an improvement in how the new Dzire handles and drives, in many ways better than its current competition. A few niggles I have with the sedan are the lack of a telescopic steering, wind noise at higher speeds and the need for more boot space. Maruti has also offered ABS, EBD, dual front airbags and ISOFIX mounts as standard.
VERDICT The new Maruti Suzuki Dzire is a wholesome and well rounded package offering just the right features and performance for an entry level sedan. The car rather feels much more premium, as though it’s in a league of its own. Premier League? Without a doubt, yes!

had just left a boiling New Delhi and the 43 deg C of heat behind when I landed in Ooty. The temperature was around 17 deg C. In such green and cool surroundings, what’s better than driving a hybrid premium luxury sedan from Lexus?
EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES
The 6th generation Lexus ES 300h is an aerodynamically crafted beauty. The car has a wheelbase of 2820mm, an overall length of 4915mm, a width of 1820mm and a height of 1450mm. The bold signature spindle grille has a Lexus logo with the iconic ‘L’ letter planted on a shade of blue which denotes that the car is a hybrid. The car has two-eye LED headlamps with the Lexus arrowhead-shaped daytime running lamps and the signature L-shaped combination lamps at the back. There is also an LED high-mount stop lamp. The aerodynamic shape of the car has been matched to perfection with aero-stabilising fins on the front door frame covers and tiny fins on the tail lamps. The paint quality is top notch. The five dual fin 17-inch aluminum wheels enhance the looks of the car further. The glass for the windshields and windows has an acoustic characteristic which blocks outside noise into the cabin. They are also water repellent. Enhancing the exterior looks is the sunroof which opens, closes and tilts up and down at the touch of a switch inside.
power adjustments. The driver’s seat has an adjustable seat cushion length. There is ample space for seating as well as leg room in the rear. LED illumination in the foot areas make it easy for getting in and out when it is dark. The airconditioning system provides 3-zone independent control of temperature in the driver’s seat, front passenger seat and the rear seats. Those sitting at the back can control temperature for their area through controls located in the rear centre arm. The sunshade for the rear windshield can be controlled electrically. This shade retracts automatically when the reverse gear is engaged. But the rear door windows and the quarter glass have manual sun shades. From the lower instrument panel, front and rear door trim there is subtle illumination that can be adjusted. The optitron meters are easy to read. When one is driving on Eco or Normal Mode, the instrumentation turns a tranquil blue. On Sport Mode the instrumentation illuminates to a vibrant red. Positioned in the centre of the meter cluster is a 4.2 inch colour TFT. The TFT multi-information display provides a wide range of vehicle

information, data and warnings that also include tyre pressure warnings on each of the four tyres. Incidentally, Lexus is offering even its fifth spare tyre of the same size as the other four, unlike the donut tyres and run flat tyres offered by competition. The intuitive remote touch interface on the centre console area helps you to change settings that show up on the TFT. The touch, I felt was a bit too sensitive for my liking. Then there are steering wheel controls for the audio system and multi-information system. The TFT screen doubles up as a parking assist monitor too. The car comes with the Mark Levinson surround sound audio system with a 12-channel
amplifier and 15 speakers.
PERFORMANCE
This car is silent to begin with and as the petrol engine kicks in, there is a constant charging of the batteries. In EV-drive mode, the car can be driven using only the electric motor power up to speeds of around 40kmph. The Lexus ES 300h comes with three drive modes—Eco, Normal and Sport. It’s best behaved in the Eco mode where throttle control and airconditioning are set at levels with an eye on fuel efficiency. Put it on Sport mode and the throttle control changes and the electric power steering gets far more responsive. The
Normal mode optimally balances the Eco and Sport modes. I could gather from the short drive that the car was quick on its feet when it was needed and the suspension took the rough roads with a lot of confidence. NVH levels were excellent and car handled well on all the twists and turns of Ooty. Every time I braked, I knew that kinetic energy was being converted to electric energy to charge the nickel-metal hybrid (Ni-MH) batteries that are installed in the luggage compartment behind the rear seats. Cruise control can be set and adjusted by a lever on the right side of the steering wheel. The hybrid system in the ES 300h gets a total output of 202hp. The 2.5L engine has been mated to an E-CVT transmission. The car can achieve a top speed of 185kmph and goes from 0-100kmph in 8.5 seconds. On the safety front the car comes with ten air bags.
VERDICT
The Lexus ES 300h luxury sedan is elegant to look at, has well crafted interiors and exteriors, and has an engine that has a graceful approach to its drive. The signature spindle grill may not appeal to you in the first glance, but once you have spent some time with the car, you may love its bold and uber design language.

There is also a Customise Mode wherein one can set one’s preferred settings for the powertrain, AVS, electric power steering and air conditioning. he new Triumph Bobber motorcycle has an uncanny knack of being an exhibitionist no matter where you take it. Its raw and retro nature paired with an unmistakable ‘bob job’ design sets it apart from any other motorcycle on offer in India, What do we call her then? Bob Throb, obviously!
DESIGN & STYLING
Taking a page from the history books, Triumph has given this Bonnie a true bob job, commonly seen back in the mid nineties. The Bonneville Bobber is long and low slung; it has a neat and minimalistic design keeping in line with bobber heritage. Triumph has tucked in a lot of technology into this motorcycle. A bare bone look with a diagonally sweeping line from the steering head to rear axle personifies the side profile of the Bonneville Bobber. Keeping things retro, Triumph has added an authentic looking battery box with a metal lock strap. The rear gets a fat 150/80 R16 tyre which adds to the bike’s butch appeal. The spoked rims also house a drum
brake inspired rear wheel hub. The Bonneville Bobber boasts of a typical hard tail look. It, however, has an adjustable monoshock which is neatly tucked under a fancy looking floating aluminum seat pan. Other traditional bobber fitments are the rear mudguard loop, rubber gaiters and a horizontally placed ignition barrel on right hand side panel. To add a touch of modern appeal, the Brits have also included bar end mirrors, handlebar risers, gloss black bullet indicators, retro looking throttle bodies housing the latest fuel injector technology and other optional fitment such as a gauge for temperature and time. This new Bonneville has all the trappings worthy of a bobber tag and looks the part from every angle.
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE
Powering the new Bonneville Bobber is a 1200cc, liquid cooled, parallel twin cylinder engine. The distinctly British motor is good for a little over 75 horses and belts of a solid 106Nm of torque. The same powerplant is found on the Bonnie T120. Triumph has given this

one a more bobber like tuning. Peak torque of 106Nm comes in at 4000rpm while peak power of 75.9bhp comes in at 6100rpm. The power delivery is punchy and can catch you off guard. The engine has been mated to a 6-speed gear box with decently tall and crunchy shifts The Bonneville Bobber is truly delightful to ride. A meaty mid range provides ample of power as the bike lunges forward. You can go through the first three gears pretty quickly and will find yourself beyond the 100kmph mark in a few seconds. A ride by wire setup ensures a smooth response to throttle inputs and Triumph’s Torque Assist Clutch ensures a pleasurable ride thanks to feather light clutch operation. Other rider aides include switchable traction control, ABS and different riding modes for Road and Rain.
40 | MOTOWN INDIA | JUNE 2017
The Bonneville Bobber rides on 41mm telescopic forks upfront with a monoshock in the rear. The suspension leans to the stiffer side with the front forks getting 90mm of travel and the rear monoshock getting 76.9mm. On smooth roads, this motorcycle is quite comfy but this is India and smooth roads are a scarcity. Another aspect one needs to be quite aware of is the fact that this bike rides low. So be extremely careful over bumps and breakers or get used to the dreadful sound of the underbelly scraping tarmac. To ride the Bonneville Bobber is quite comfortable, the rider seat height has been set at 690mm and the bike weighs in at 228kgs. It has nimble characteristics and is surprisingly flickable. Triumph has ensured impeccable ergonomics and an

adjustable rider seat ensures comfort for riders of different shapes and sizes. Another point to note is a small fuel tank capacity of 9.1 litres. The Bonneville Bobber returns anywhere between 22-25kmpl if you are gentle with her. Aggressive throttle inputs will change all that! The small fuel tank is in line with a distinctive bobber design but it also means frequent trips to the gas station, which is something I am willing to live with.
VERDICT It doesn’t really matter where you take this motorcycle, heads are bound to turn! The Bonneville Bobber draws strongly from bob jobs that have emerged over the years and Triumph has managed to keep its design as authentic as possible. Facts being facts, bobbers came with small fuel tanks to keep the motorcycle light and Triumph has even incorporated this design element despite it being impractical in today’s scenario. The 1200cc High Torque engine powering the Bonneville Bobber is like the icing on this cake. The Bonneville Bobber is fun to ride even on a hot summer day. The heat dissipation from the engine is good and not irksome.

Vinales wins, while Rossi spins in thriller race in Le Mans MotoGP Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Maverick Vinales came out fighting and lucky as he dominated the MotoGP field to claim a sensational victory at the Grand Prix de France. With this, he sealed Yamaha’s 500th Grand Prix win. For teammate Valentino Rossi who also showed a blistering pace while keeping up with Vinales in the last round at the Le Mans Bugatti Grand Prix race circuit, it was bad
luck at the end when he unfortunately suffered an unlucky fall on the last lap. Vinales was strong right from the beginning of the 28-lap French round. Starting from pole, he flew off the line to take the holeshot and slotted into second as he dived into turn 3, behind Johann Zarco of Monster Yamaha Tech 3. The Spaniard was on the case, shadowed by his teammate. With 22
laps Vinales made a textbook move on the satellite Yamaha rookie to take over the lead. While Vinales held on to his P1 position, despite Rossi rapidly approaching him. He was leading on the last lap, when the Doctor crashed out of the race, allowing him to bring his YZR-M1 over the finish line, 3.134s ahead of his closest rival.

Sebastien Ogier claims 5th Vodafone Rally de Portugal win Sebastien Ogier claimed his 5th Vodafone Rally de Portugal win on May 21, 2017. With this, he increased his FIA World Rally Championship lead with his second victory of the season by 15.6sec from Thierry Neuville who was driving a Hyundai i20 Coupe. His 40th career success also matched the record five Portugal wins of Finn Markku Alén. Driving his Ford Fiesta, Ogier, who scored his maiden WRC win in Portugal seven years ago, took the lead on the fourth day. Neuville was targeting a hat-trick after victories in Corsica and Argentina. He is now second in the title battle, 22 points behind Ogier. Team-mate Dani Sordo finished a further 46.1sec behind in third. The Spaniard struggled with the handling of
his i20 on the dusty gravel roads and could not fend off Ogier and Neuville after lying second earlier in the weekend. Ott Tänak looked to be the man to beat on Saturday. He led before swiping a bank and breaking his Fiesta’s suspension and brakes. He recovered to finish fourth, almost half a minute adrift of Sordo. Craig Breen was again the leading Citroën C3 driver in fifth, the fourth occasion in six rallies he has occupied that position. He was 27.2sec adrift of Tänak, but well over a minute clear of Elfyn Evans’ Fiesta. The championship reaches its midpoint next month at Rally Italia Sardegna. The four-day gravel fixture is based in Alghero on June 8 - 11.

REVIEW Reports: Aakash S. Paul
CAT S60 PRICE `64,999 The Cat S60 smartphone is a different species altogether and gets a military grade protection, IP68 certification and is the world’s first smartphone to have a thermal imaging camera. The thermal camera only takes images at a resolution of 80x60 pixels but through the use of a special technology the mobile actually takes the image from both, the thermal and the 13MP rear camera, to deliver the final result which is very high quality. The thermal camera shows you the range of temperature in your scene, lets you monitor a specific point, capture the thermal images and videos you see and even makes entire thermal time-lapses. Apart from the thermal camera, the other thing that makes the Cat S60 stand out is the level of ruggedness it boasts of. The smartphone has been reinforced with a die cast frame which makes the phone break proof from a height of 1.8m and also gets IP68 certification making it water and dust proof. You can take this smartphone to as much as 5m deep in the water for up to 60 minutes and it will still work! Now with all the protection built into the device it is bound to be bulky and that it is. The Cat S60’s frame has an octagonal design and the front gets 3 physical buttons below the screen, all of which have a trapezoidal design. The back is textured and black in colour making for a good grip and solid looks. The Cat S60has an octa core Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC with 4 cores clocked at 1.5GHz and 4 others clocked at 1.2GHz. Paired with the CPU are the Adreno 405 GPU and 3GB of RAM. While it might not be as powerful as the other devices in this price bracket, it does pack enough to make your smartphone experience lag free. The UI flows well, thanks to the stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow that you get. Internal storage stands at 32GB and you can add in a micro-SD card of up to 256GB without sacrificing a SIM slot. This again shows how Cat has tried to make this
phone with the least amount of compromises when it comes to practicality. The battery backup is also great thanks to the 3800mAh battery which was able keep the device alive for more than a day despite heavy usage. The 720p screen up front is pleasing to look at and the brightness levels are very high so you can easily use this device even under the sun. Coming to the camera, the S60 gets a 13MP autofocus rear shooter with LED flash and a 5MP front facing camera. Both cameras work great during the day or when you have adequate light but the moment you shoot in low light conditions you will see some very obvious noise and grains in your images and videos. Both the front and rear cameras get HDR support and 1080p video recording at 30fps. Sadly there is no dedicated manual mode but you can change some of the parameters like ISO and exposure.
ZEBRONICS ZEB FIT500 FITNESS BAND PRICE `3,999 The ZEB-FIT500 from Zebronics is a fitness band that can help you keep track of your daily routines and push you to do more and stay fit. It gets a rubber strap which comes in 3 different colours - Red, Black and Blue and a 0.49 inch display. The display is legible in almost all conditions except for when you are directly under the sun. The ZEB-FIT500 comes with a heart rate monitor and is capable of recording your heart rate automatically as well as manually. The fitness band can be paired with your smartphone via the ZEB FIT app which requires that you have IOS 7.1 or Android 4.1 and above. Apart from that, the band can display things like time, date, battery percentage, steps taken, calories burnt and distance covered. The stats monitored by the band are accurate for the most part except for
48 | MOTOWN INDIA | JUNE 2017
www.motownindia.com
REVIEW the heart rate which can be off by 3-4 measures at times. What I liked about the heart rate monitor was that it did not require that I stay still. It could calculate my heart’s BPM even while I was on the move. Additionally the device can give you sedentary reminders if you stay still for too long, monitors your sleep cycles, set alarms, show caller IDs, message alerts and even trigger your phone’s camera to take pictures. The ZEB-FIT500 has a 70mAh battery that can take about 40 minutes to charge from 0 to 100pc and then last for almost 10 days. One thing that I really like about this band is that even though it is not fully waterproof, it is water resistant to some extent. In my usage, there were times when I spilled a few drops of water on the ZEB-FIT500 but despite that the device worked flawlessly.
COOLPAD NOTE 5 LITE PRICE `8,199 While a lot of people desire a smartphone that is as sturdy as possible and would last even an explosion, there are a select few who would like their (smartphone) companion to look not just good but great. For those few, Coolpad has an eye popping offering in the form of the Note5 Lite. Just as the name suggests, the Coolpad Note 5 Lite is a lighter and slightly more pocket friendly version of the Coolpad Note 5. The Note 5 Lite is a beauty inside out just like its elder sibling. The metal unibody design finished with shiny chrome like material is surely eye-catching. The front is equally pleasing with a 2.5D curved glass that lends the display a very smooth flow and a sense of sophistication. The phone weighs a decent 148gms and is easy to use with one hand for the most part but I feel that it could have done with thinner bezels. This device comes with Android 6.0Marshmallow with Coolpad’s Cool UI 8.0. This custom skin allows for loads of customisation and themes to change how the interface looks, should you get bored of looking at the same thing. The best part is that despite all the graphical goodies, there is little to no lag in performance. Everyday usage is butter smooth except for a few times here and there which is easily forgiven. The hardware that powers the Note 5 Lite includes a 1.0GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 CPU coupled with Mali T720MP2 GPU and 3GB of DDR4 RAM. While the processor clocks lower than the competition it is not far behind and makes up in the fact that it comes with 3GB of RAM which is enough for almost every multitasking situation. You get 16GB of internal storage out of which only a little more than 7GB is available at first boot. You can expand the storage to 64GB using a microSD card but if you plan to use a dual-SIM setup then that would be a problem as this device comes with a hybrid SIM tray allowing for either 2 nano-SIM or a nano-SIM and a microSD card at once. Gaming performance was decent as most of the games were playable despite the frame drops and lags seen here and there. With Cool UI 8.0 you get some really handy features such as the ability to take a screenshot or record the screen without a third party app, quick access to commonly used things by swiping from the bottom of the screen and the C button which we have seen on previous Coolpad devices as well. The phone packs all the essential features when it comes to connectivity
www.motownindia.com
with 4G VoLTE support, Bluetooth, WiFi, FM and USB OTG. In my testing the call quality of the phone was very good. The voice is transmitted loud and clear and the in call speaker is also loud enough to hear what the other person is saying even in outdoor conditions. The 5-inch IPS display on the device sports a 1280X720p resolution and wide viewing angles. The colour reproduction is vibrant and the brightness is adequate for outdoor usage although it is a bit reflective under the sun. The rear 13MP rear camera on the Coolpad Note 5 Lite delivers a good performance in well lit conditions but starts to show noise when dealing with extremely low light situations. Thankfully it gets a powerful LED flash that can really change and save your night shots (the close range ones at least). The camera also supports HDR and has an option to capture gif. Sadly this rear camera only shoots video at 720p or 480p which is a bit of a letdown and I expected it to shoot videos up to 1080p. The front facing 5MP auto focus camera actually performed better than I expected. The photos were well lit and it is great for taking selfies. There is an LED flash for the front camera but it is not mighty powerful but gets the job done when you do not have the support of any other light source. The front camera records video at 720p as well and the videos come out good for the most part. The 2500mAh battery will last you a full day on moderate usage and can go beyond that if you tread carefully. On heavy usage as well the phone lasted for a little more than half a day. The supplied charger is quick enough to get your phone going with about half an hour of charging.

JEEP COMPASS, TATA NEXON will add zing to Ranjangaon plant Motown India Bureau
T
wo new car models from two different car manufacturers-the Jeep Compass SUV from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) India and the Tata Nexon, a compact SUV from Tata Motors, are expected to inject a lot of action very soon in the Ranjangaon facility of Fiat India Automobiles Ltd (FIAL) and thereby change the dynamics of manufacturing at this plant. FIAL is a 50:50 joint venture company between Fiat and Tata Motors. The FIAL plant has a capacity to manufacture 160,000 units of vehicles per annum. The plant which currently makes the Fiat Punto and the Fiat Linea, also makes the Tata Bolt and the Zest. It has been officially confirmed that the Ranjangaon plant will manufacture the Jeep Compass (pre production of the Jeep compass has already begun and the vehicle will roll out by July 2017). But FIAL officials at Ranjangaon told Motown India that Tata Motors will manufacture the Nexon compact SUV soon at this plant. In a recent interview with Motown India, FIAL’s Chief Executive Officer Gurpratap Boparai maintained that the Ranjangaon plant is currently running at 40pc capacity utilisation levels. But if one were to go by the sales records of both Fiat and Tata Motors, this figure could be a tad lower. Going by the latest SIAM industry figures, Fiat India produced a mere248 units in the month of March 2017 and a total of 4700 units for the entire fiscal (April 2016 to March 2017). The company sold a mere 353 units in March 2017 while for the 2016-17 fiscal it sold 5665 units only. 60 | MOTOWN INDIA | JUNE 2017

TATA MOTORS NEXON GETS READY FOR LAUNCH
While Fiat has not been doing well on the sales front, the going has been very tough for two of the Tata Motors products
that are made at this very plant. It is rumoured that Tata Motors is likely to stop production of the Zest and the Bolt and focus more on its new range of vehicles which come

with the IMPACT design language and leading technologies. These include the Tata Tiago, Tata Tigor and the soon to be launched Tata Nexon. The Tata Nexon is the one that is likely to be manufactured at the Ranjangaon plant. Tata Motors showcased the Geneva edition of the Tata Nexon at the Geneva International Motor Show. This sporty compact SUV features Tata Motors’ IMPACT design philosophy and comes with unique design features that include a contrast tone roof colour, beltline finisher and ‘X’ factor. Moreover, it has LED taillamps and stylish projector headlamps with daytime running lights (DRL). The car is powered by a new generation diesel engine with multi-mode drive selection.
JEEP COMPASS AND FCA INVESTMENT IN RANJANGAON
Both the Tata Nexon and the Jeep Compass would change the dynamics of manufacturing at this plant. The Jeep Compass is being manufactured worldwide at four locations: Mexico, China, Brazil and India’s Ranjangaon plant. That would mean that the Jeep Compass would be exported from India to some developed right hand drive markets in the world including England, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, among others. An investment of US $280 million (approx. Rs 1800 crore) has gone into the facility for its upgradation. “It is absolutely one of the finest automobile plants that is there in India

and also globally. I say this with a lot of confidence because we have had a lot of visitors from abroad who have seen some of the best facilities globally and they rate this as one of the best. Having said that we have done a lot of investment in this facility for this product and we set up a new body shop, we have upgraded our assembly line, we have upgraded our paint shop and we are ready now to make world class products. That’s not to say that our current products are not world class. The
investments have been made by the joint venture partners,” said Boparai. The 2 litre diesel engine powering the Jeep Compass will also be made at this plant, he said.

Jeep Compass at the Ranjangaon facility are of global standards, never seen before in India to a great extent. The body shop here is highly automated with 90 robots. There is around 65 pc automation with no manual intervention, with precise hood and bumper replacement being done with plasma cutting, an industry first. Plasma cutting is a process that cuts through electrically conductive materials by means of an accelerated jet of hot plasma. As for laser welding of parts, a sophisticated laser welding process is used while inner and outdoor frames are stitched by remote lasers. Precision engineering holds the Jeep Compass’ strong body together. Laser welding for doors is an industry first with two stitches per second which is a fast and accurate process that improves aesthetics, reduces weight and enhances durability. High precision cameras monitor quality real time. There is precise application of 85 metres of 2K sealant. The in line diagnostics is a first for a “Made in India” vehicle, FCA India claims. Precision cameras verify underbody geometry. Stringent tests only allow the perfect underbody to move to the next process. Around 35 cameras across the line check consistency. The result is first shot quality www.motownindia.com
success rate of 97pc, which is again highest in the industry, while competition vehicles are at 80-85pc level. Hot stamping reinforces frame and delivers a complex shape. Robots usher steel blanks into the furnace where the furnace operating temperature is around 400 deg centigrade. Heated blanks enter the stamping machine. The Jeep Compass has 27 hot stamped parts, which is again an industry highest. Amongst others, A-Pillar, B-Pillar, Door beams and front rail are hot stamped. Stringent quality audit process is undertaken in the metrology department for the Jeep Compass where 19 highly trained professionals work on the Jeep Compass master body. The body frame and parts are placed on the Meisterbock. The Meistebock is an aluminium frame shouldering the Master Body. Every tiny gap and flush line is measured. All parts are verified for flushness and flush precision of 1 millimeter, Measuring machines gauge parts against original CAD design while three-Axis Touch Probe system measures upto 1/1000th of a millimetre. The doors of the Jeep Compass are assembled separately. The material used for inner trim saves 800 grammes on
each door. The door frame is mated to inner assembly, glass and fixtures, interior trim, firewall and cabling. The process is simplified through module assembly. Door modular system is made up of long glass fibre reinforced poly propylene. The single step production process with injection moulded interfaces results in typical weight reduction of about 1.2kg per door. The seats are assembled at the supplier shop. The S frame in seat enhances support while the seat foam is designed for longevity and comfort. Multi-step machine ensures perfect tyre alignment and balancing. This multi-step usage is being done for the first time in India. The complete tyre assembly is then sent to the line for fitment. The Ranjangaon plant now boasts of a highly flexible engine decking system, capable to deck multi variants and is also flexible for multi models. There is automatic synchronisation of cart with vehicle body for 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. Once the Jeep Compass takes a complete form and goes past the final assembly, it goes for a roller check, shower check and testing. The Ranjangaon facility will soon be buzzing with a lot of action, something that had been missing for a long, long time. JUNE 2017 | MOTOWN INDIA | 63

GENERAL MOTORS INDIA to halt domestic sales in 2017 Barely a few weeks after announcing that it is shutting operations in its plant in Halol in Gujarat, General Motors India has now announced that it will focus on its growing vehicle export manufacturing operations and cease sales in the domestic market by the end of 2017. Thus, the Talegaon plant near Pune in Maharashtra will serve only as an export plant for the company. GM India informed employees of the decision on May 18, 2017. The GM Technical CentreIndia (GMTC-I) in Bengaluru performs global work for GM. This work is not impacted by this announcement. “Our decision in India is an important milestone in strengthening the performance of our GM International operations and establishing GM as a more focused and disciplined company,” said Stefan Jacoby, GM executive vice president and president of GM International. As GM moved to consolidate Indian manufacturing at its Talegaon Assembly Plant, the company ceased manufacturing at its Halol Assembly Plant on April 28, 2017. Negotiations continue on

the asset sale at Halol. Kaher Kazem, GM India president and managing director, said the focus for the GM India manufacturing base at Talegaon will be export markets, upcoming export vehicle launches and exploring longerterm strategic options. The decision, which follows a comprehensive review of future product plans for GM India, is part of a series of actions taken by General Motors to address the performance of its operations worldwide. Through the review, which began in June 2016, the company determined its greatest opportunity in India to drive shareholder return rests on
focusing on exports from India, said a GM India press release.. Jacoby said, “We explored many options, but determined the increased investment originally planned for India would not deliver the returns of other significant global opportunities. It would also not help us achieve a leadership position or compelling, longterm profitability in the domestic market. Difficult as it has been to reach this decision, it is the right outcome to support our global strategy and deliver appropriate returns for our shareholders.” This announcement is consistent with GM’s global
disciplined allocation of capital and investment in its business around the world designed to generate stronger returns and drive shareholder value. “GM India’s export business has tripled over the past year,” Kazem said. “Exports will remain our focus going forward as we continue to leverage India’s strong supply base. We recently launched the new Chevrolet Beat hatchback for export to Mexico and Central and South American markets and will launch the Chevrolet Beat sedan later this year for those markets,” he added. “We will support our affected customers, employees, dealers and suppliers,” Kazem said, adding that, “Chevrolet owners can be assured that we will continue to honour all warranties and provide comprehensive after sales support.” The company will work closely with affected customers and dealers on a transition plan. The customer support centre will remain open and all warranties and service agreements, as well as ongoing service and parts requirements for all vehicles, will continue to be honoured, said the company.
Experts welcome GST rates, but baffled on rates for hybrids, e-vehicles Beginning with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), several experts and bodies have welcomed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates on automobiles in the country, while cautioning the high rates for electric vehicles and hybrids. The base GST rates for the automobile segment have been set at 28%, which is broadly in line with overall indirect tax rates at present. However, in addition to the base rate, the Government has also proposed to levy a cess of 1% and 3% on small cars with petrol and diesel engines, respectively. Under the GST scheme which is scheduled for July 1, Electric Vehicle industry has been kept at 12 pc. Opposing this move Ayush Lohia, CEO, Lohia Auto Industries said “Keeping the Electric Vehicle industry at 12 percent tax band can prove to be harmful for this industry. The reason being that states such as Rajasthan and 64 | MOTOWN INDIA | JUNE 2017
Uttrakhand already have 0 percent VAT on Electric Vehicles; in such a scenario levying 12 percent GST on this industry will negatively impact sales and impose a burden on consumers and dampen demand , as the cost will go up by 12 percent. It will also increase our product cost.” Vinod Dasari, President, SIAM said, “Government has always encouraged environmentally friendly technologies and with the current focus on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and reducing carbon footprint one would have expected the lower taxation to continue on such vehicles in a technology agnostic manner”.. He also pointed out that the “The inclusion of 10-13 seater vehicles used mainly for public transport in the same tax bracket as luxury cars with a 15% Cess is also unexpected and may merit a review.” www.motownindia.com
