he 13th Auto Expo 2016 was a huge show that saw a large number of vehicles being launched and unveiled. Several concepts too were shown by vehicle manufacturers. Cars, motorcycles, scooters, trucks and buses jostled for space at the Motor Show held at
Greater Noida. Around the same time, the Components Show too was held, but at a different venue. Motown India was a media partner to both the shows. On the whole, it was a well managed show, except for the fact that the media partners, for once, were given a step-motherly treatment. They were huddled together in Hall No 16 which was in fact a hanger and away from where the real action was taking place. In a way it was good to be far from the madding crowd but then there were neither wash rooms nor a place to get a quick bite at the hall. SIAM should realise that as a media partner one needs space to seat their team so that they can peacefully cover the event. To begin with there was no provision for wi fi internet connection and whatever connection was provided was done through LAN at very exorbitant rates. Yes, there was a media room in the main building but that made more sense to those who were not media partners and preferred to sit there and do their work. Builders, e-commerce sites, exhibition organisers are all now calling themselves journalists. As a result in a media hall instead of finding magazines and periodicals, you get to see your private cars and motorcycles. Many of them switched on the engines of their vehicles to attract crowds and as a result the hanger was full of noxious fumes. I survived the ordeal to write a report on the great motor show!

test ride the Himalayan across the country from March 17, 2016. Built on a rugged duplex split cradle frame designed and developed by Harris Performance, the Himalayan is stable and agile in equal parts. A strong mono shock rear suspension with linkage allows for longer travel and delivers a smoother ride experience regardless of terrain. The Himalayan’s 220 mm ground clearance ensures it gobbles up obstacles comfortably be it in the Himalayas, rocky river beds or at stream crossings. An optimal wheel size combination allows for better control while riding over rocks and ruts. The Himalayan is powered by a completely new and evolved overhead camshaft engine
platform that forms the base for its new long stroke LS 410 engine. The all new engine delivers high torque and usable power at lower RPMs. This makes for smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, making it easy to climb hills, or to maneuver through traffic. Modern design and materials of the engine translate to increased efficiency and low maintenance, and the engine can go 10,000 kilometers between oil changes. Touring utility is built inherently into the Himalayan. A 15 litre fuel tank provides a long range of approximately 450 kilometers. Luggage mounting points, for hard panniers, soft luggage and jerry cans are integral to the motorcycle’s design. A simple instrument

very time the Auto Expo is held in India, the components players have an Asli Naqli pavilion which displays spurious components along with real ones. There are lots for one to learn visiting this pavilion. At the Motor Show, there was also an Asli Naqli show. Here it’s not about components, rather it is about journalists. journalists. This year one expected the organisers (SIAM) to curb these rascals but much to the frustration of the genuine journalists, this tribe of fraud journalists came in unchecked and created mayhem on the two days of February 3 and 4, reserved only for the media. The corporate world is responsible for this. In today’s digital world, why is there need to even issue a press release? Simply ask every journalist present to drop his or her visiting card and after the press conference is over, the company can simply email each and every person with the report as well as high
and low res pictures. Genuine journalists and photographers will stand to gain a lot. With no gifts luring the naqli journalists’ tribe, there will be no stupid rush caused by these fraudies. SIAM officials I talked to admitted that they did not expect this media mayhem year. They tried their best to dole out media accreditation only to genuine journos, but unfortunately they failed in their mission.

Beer flows like water and the popular Goan wine is consumed barrel loads all throughout the year. But on February 19 and 20, 2016, romance of the human kind got infused with huge doses of adrenaline as thousands of motorcyclists rode into the Arpora Sporting Grounds to be part of the India Bike Week (IBW) 2016, an annual motorcycling event that is beginning to grow in stature and significance. Mind you, this show cannot ever be replicated in any other region in India because it’s only Goa that understands, respects and allows such an awesome event. Maybe it has something to do with the beautiful Goan culture and the warmth of its people, something that can never be found elsewhere in India. Massive motorcycles of all makes from Indian Motorcycle (Polaris group) to Ducatis and Harleys, Triumphs, Benellis, UM, Mahindra Mojos, among others took part in this event. IBW is an exciting platform for us to be present and foster knowledge sharing while showcasing our unique offerings to bike enthusiasts and we are happy to be a part of it.” If Shell wanted the motorcycles to stay powerful, so did it.... motorcycles of all hues and cries came in with riders dressed in their best riding gears and showed off their machines to
salivating crowds. Thousands of hardcore and casual bikers crossed national and international borders to gather at Arpora. According to the organisers, the roar of over 12,000 bikers who joined the Great Migration to the festival was the defining moment at India Bike Week 2016. Around 700 riders registered on the Ride to IBW, supported by IBW, with medical support and marshalling from Nagpur, Mumbai and Bangalore. INDIA BIKE WEEK 2016 We have not just used this as the platform, we started engaging with them almost four to five months in advance when this event was getting curated. They have these biking clubs all over India. We were part of their Sunday long rides which we are sponsoring, and during the chai panis and pakora rides we could talk to them, answer their technical queries, thus there was a lot of pre work we had done. We have also used a lot of social media where the bikers could recommend the best mechanic they had worked with. So we got them talking about their most favourite mechanic and based on that we shortlisted the top ten mechanics in the country and we are also rewarding them. This is something very unique because mechanic is someone who is a key partner and an influence in the journey. We have also used their entire friends circle and asked them to post passionate stories of biking and the people who are biking. We got a lot of response for that and we shortlisted the top stories and we are rewarding them also. There is a lot of pre-activity that has happened. When the consumer is walking in here we are trying to provide him the entire experience, they get their RFIDs, take selfies, they can do their power, do a dyno test where they can actually test
the power of their bike; we want to show them that the product we are launching—the 15W50 oil--- gives the best viscosity for 300cc bikes and above. The power does not deteriorate between the two oil drain intervals. Most of the competitive oils would have a deterioration of power along the ODI. That is something our scientists have worked on—it has Gas To Liquid (GTL) technology and it has active cleansing agent which only Shell has. Both these have been patented by us. We are giving out a lot of coupons and free trials at amazon. Our fundamental belief is that once the consumer tries the product, we are more than 100pc confident that the person will convert. So it is about giving them the experience over here to really say that our brands stand for power. We shall also be doing a lot of post engagement with these groups, so it is really not a one-time engagement. What about your association with IBW? This is the second time we are sponsoring them. This event is getting bigger. This is not really about are we making an ROI or are we getting our break even or not. What we truly believe in is that we want to be there where our consumers are. We are ready to invest in this community for a couple of years so that we grow
SPECIAL REPORT
with their journey. The organisation of the event has been a very positive experience. We feel that our consumers are also rewarding us back so we feel it is a very fulfilling journey and we want to continue this partnership. As a senior marketing person, how critical is the role of the digital world in pushing things ahead? If you look at this event as an example, there is no above the line, there is no radio, very little print, which is why we come to a few PR and journalists like you. Where our spending is, it is either on BTL, Below the Line, which is the event itself or digital. These are the only two places we are spending the entire money. This gives a glimpse into how much passionate we are in terms of changing with the times, changing with how the consumer
is moving. We have mapped the consumer journey s to when is he looking for a product, when is he seeking relevant information about it, when is he trying to get more data on the product, which sites is he going to, which friends is he calling, which social media site is where he is curating his information etc. We have done almost nine months study with digital consumers to really see where they are present and what is the information they are looking for.
INTERVIEW WITH AKHILESHWAR JHA / VIVEK PAREEK Vice President – Technical Lubricants, Shell India Markets Pvt Ltd / Global Brand Manager-Shell Advance (Based in Singapore) As a Global Brand Manager, Vivek what is your role in Shell? Vivek Pareek (VP): As you know, Shell is a big brand and big brands can add a lot of value to a consumer’s life. We are on a mission to make bike ride more enjoyable. Millions of people

ride bikes and are there to make sure they enjoy their rides. That is what Shell Advance exists for. Our core value propositions to the consumers are: We make every bike ride enjoyable. We believe that if we add value to our consumers they will reward us.
So is this IBW a great platform for promoting your brand? VP: Absolutely! At the India Bike Week you can see the people around, there is so much excitement, so much raw passion, and I feel so happy to be here. I just feel like
hugging these guys. They are so passionate about what they do. That is also we as a brand are, we exist for bike. If there is no bike Shell Advance would not be there. This is the second time we are here and we are really happy to be here.

SPECIAL REPORT The brand has to be good and the product too has to be good. So technically how sound is this product you are launching here? Akhileshwar Jha (AJ): I must tell you that this product is very much apart from the rest of the products you see here. The product is made through the PurePlus technology which comes from Gas To Liquid. In simple terms, the liquid is from natural gas. It is really pure from all the impurities you have in the crude oil. It is crystal clear base oil and then we use the patented technology from Shell which is Active Cleansing. The product we are launching today (Shell Advance Ultra 15W50) is about staying with the power. Using this oil, the engine delivers great power in all terrains, be it hilly areas, cold regions, high temperature regions, harsh conditions etc. In all such conditions, the oil does not thin down. The oil is technically superior, but has this been conveyed to the motorcyclists? AJ: The Rev it Up campaign is all about it. Biking is about feeling. One has to feel the power of the oil from the engine to the wheel. It is not about viscosity alone. It is the PurePlus technology that we have. And with the Active Cleansing, the oil keeps the engine clean. There is no friction
INDIA BIKE WEEK 2016 awareness? VP: As brands are concerned, we are here to serve the consumers. We got where the consumers go. India is on the cusp of a digital revolution. As more and more people go digital, we are present more in the digital space and we are able to engage them there.
L-R: Akhileshwar Jha & Vivek Pareek loss, you have power all the way through. I talked to bikers about few concerns like noise and vibration. These are some areas the oil addresses in the bike. How different is this oil from the one you launched at the last IBW? AJ: The technology remains the same. This time is for the superbikes, the heavier motorcycles. The oil has been made keeping the passion and demands of the real biker.
India is more of a commuter bike country. Do you address that segment too? AJ: Yes, India is mainly utility biking and the young boys love to rev up their bikes, especially to show off to their partners. This oil which we launched has a lot of benefits in terms of performance. There is also a lot of fuel saving. How significant is the digital space for promoting your product and creating brand
How do you perceive the Indian market, since you are based out of Singapore, what’s your take on India? VP: Firstly, I am an Indian. I grew up here and spent many years in India. India is among the top three bike markets in the world. We are huge, so for me India is one of the biggest opportunities. I am here to focus on India and India is the growth story for me, much more than some of the other markets. Within India you can find big bikers, commuter bikers...there is place for everybody here in India. This is not a small pond, this is the sea. Can you tell us about the R&D efforts undertaken by your company? AJ: Shell is a technology leader. Globally we spend US $ 1.2 billion on R&D itself. Coming to lubricants we have around 150 patents on R&D, especially on lubricant products. We have a technology centre in Houston in the US, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Hamburg in Germany, and also in Bangalore.

associated with the launch of Shell Advance Ultra 15W-50. Power is a pre-requisite for both wrestling and heavy-duty biking. Just the way, I cannot afford a drop in my power levels in between wrestling rounds, similarly, your bike cannot afford to lose power between oil changes. SPECIAL REPORT
INTERVIEW WITH PANKAJ DUBEY MD, Indian Motorcyle How excited are you about the India Bike Week? Excellent, it’s a great place. It is an annual event and it’s been growing year on year. I am very pleased to be here, meeting all the bikers, and all the bikers who love these legendary motorcycles. This show started off in a small way and now in its latest avatar it has grown in stature. The way this property has grown, everybody is thinking if you are a real biker, you have got to be here at IBW. You think Goa is the right place for such a beautiful show? In fact there are a lot of beautiful places in India. We have not explored them. But surely Goa is a great place. It does have an international feel about it. The sea beaches add to the beauty of this place. But India has a lot of beautiful places to offer like the
sand dunes of Rajasthan, or a hill station, etc. Tell us about the Indian Motorcycle Riders Group (IMRG)? Internationally Indian Motorcycle has launched this group called Indian Motorcycle Riders Group. We are announcing the start of this group’s India Chapter. This is all about giving our riders the pleasure of riding together, giving the brotherhood sort of feeling, for long distance riding. People would generally do a weekend ride for an hour or two, have breakfast or lunch and come back. But we would give them platform where they can go for a longer distance of a few days and enjoy the
ride and of course the different locations. We have some very exotic locations in mind. How many are there initially for this group? To start with we have all the Indian customers who are the owners of Indian motorcycles. They will be enrolled free for
the first two years. Thus every customer who has bought an Indian motorcycle in the last 18 months will be enrolled into IMRG. Moving forward we also have plans to get fan memberships which is in case you even don’t own an Indian Motorcycle bike you can still be a fan. We are working on that.
INTERVIEW WITH AYUSH LOHIA Director, UM Lohia Two Wheelers Pvt Ltd What is your impression of the IBW 2016? Frankly speaking, this show is quite impressive. This is the first time UM is here at the IBW. The overall feeling is quite good. These UM motorcycles are going to be manufactured at your plant. Has production started? The production will start very soon. We are getting our first batch from our suppliers. We are equipping ourselves in such a manner that we can start deliveries in May-June 2016. What’s been the response to your bikes at the IBW? We are getting a very fabulous response from the bikers here. They are seeing something different from the RE, Avenger and from the other heavy bikes. The UM
www.motownindia.com
bike is positioned between a Harley and a RE. They are very enthusiastic about the product. They foresee this product somewhere between the Royal Enfield and Harley. You showed the bikes even at the Auto Expo 2016- The Motor Show. What was the response of the youth there? This bike is undoubtedly targeted at the youth. They are looking for something new as well as innovative which we are going to provide at UML. They are very enthusiastic about the bike after seeing them. On a personal level what is your choice between the Renegade Command and the Renegade SportS? On a personal level, I like the Renegade Sport S.

ATVs power their w Report & Photography JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER The 9th edition of Baja SAEINDIA 2016 held in Indore witnessed engineering students from across the country competing in their indigenously built offroad vehicles on some very tough and challenging tracks at the Natrip facility in Pithampur. A total of 129 teams took part in the endurance round for mBaja and eBaja. As the conventional Baja (mBaja) (pronounced Baha) is all about petrol driven ATVs, eBAJA vehicles run on electric power using electric motor powered by rechargeable lithium Ion battery packs. The eBAJA event was initiated by SC & OC of Baja SAEINDIA which engages more than 1000 engineering students every year. To leverage the onset of electric mobility in India the organisers started this event under the convenorship of Subodh Morye in 2014. The second edition of eBAJA saw nine teams competing for the title on February 20, 2016. The overall winners for the 9th edition of Baja SAEINDIA 2016 were Team Nemesis Racing from Pune. The team was formed by the students from College of Engineering, Pune and were driving buggy No. 1. Nemesis Racing was also last year’s winner at the SAEINDIA Baja and won awards in Engineering Design, CAE, Build Quality, Vehicle Safety, Technology Innovation, Acceleration, Manoeuvrability, Traction, Suspension and the Raftar Award this year. The terrain of Pithampur, Indore played home for these participants as they raced around the 5kms track which consisted of natural and man-made hurdles. The year 2016 also marked the second coming of the eBaja which hosted nine teams battling it out for the title. At the end of an endearing journey it was Team Stallion from Smt. Kashibai Naval College of Engineering from Pune which bagged the best eBaja Team Award. The teams built these vehicles from scratch which included the fabrication, assembly and design of prototype buggies. With almost no assistance from professionals and a guideline to limit the speed to 60kmph these teams set out to build some of the most innovative machines the Baja circuit has seen. These vehicles
were tested in the Dynamic Evaluation round where each team was given points on the basis of acceleration, speed, hill climb and manoeuvrability and durability. The last test was of endurance where these vehicles were tested over rough terrain and challenging weather conditions at a constant speed for several hours. The 5kms track comprised of many hurdles which even the best of teams found tough to cross. Apart from building these Baja buggies the participating teams had to find a champion from amongst themselves to take on the challenges of the course. Both man and machine were put to a severe test which challenged their expertise and intuition. There were many who did not see the finish line and were helped out by tractors and Polaris off-roaders. Hearts were broken, bodies were bruised and machines exhausted but at the end of the day all participants walked off the dirt with a smile on their faces. Winning for them was not about just an award but the achievement of being able to build a machine which rendered

them fit to race. A total of 395 teams registered for this year’s BAJA SAEINDIA out of which 179 qualified for the finale. Only 129 teams made it to the gruesome endurance round. More than 8000 students from different parts of India converged in Indore for this year’s title. The three-day event began with a Static Evaluation of design, cost and marketing. The finale
comprised of teams showcasing their single-seat, off-road vehicles which were judged on the basis of engineering design, cost and technology innovation. The Mahindra BAJA SAEINDIA gives students from across the country a platform to display their technical prowess and represent their colleges in one of the country’s largest university level motorsport competitions.

MOTORSPORT DS Virgin claims its first Formula E win in best race of season so far Sam Bird produced a brilliant performance to hold off the charge of Sebastien Buemi and claim the first Formula E win for the DS Virgin alliance. Bird started the race from pole and controlled the pack from the front, just using enough energy to keep Nico Prost (Renault e.dams) and then Team Aguri’s Antonio Felix da Costa at bay. Nick Heidfeld of Mahindra racing came in seventh while his team mate Bruno Senna was palced 10th. On his return to the series after his injury-enforced break, Heidfeld produced a solid drive to take the seventh place. Meanwhile his Mahindra team
performed heroics to repair Bruno Senna’s damaged car from qualifying. The Brazilian repaid their efforts by claiming the final point for 10th. The Renault e.dams driver pulled off an audacious fourwide move on the opening lap to ensure he vaulted from 18th to 15th in one fell swoop. From there on he meticulously carved his way through the pack, picking off his rivals one by one, so that he was into fifth place when the unfortunate da Costa’s car ground to a halt. The Qualcomm Safety Car was deployed and bunched up the field, and meant Buemi was
now a realistic contender for victory. With Renault e.dams team-mate Prost running slowly as he entered the pits for the
mandatory car swap, Buemi jumped into third, behind Bird and title rival Lucas di Grassi (Abt Schaeffler).
Haas F1 Team’s very first race car arrives at Barcelona Test
The VF-16, Haas F1 Team’s first race car, has arrived. The car officially broke cover on February 21, 2016 via Haas F1 Team’s social media channels and website. It hits the track Monday for the first day of preseason testing at the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya. The origin of naming the car “VF-16” goes back to the first CNC machine manufactured by Haas Automation, the VF-1, launched in 1988. The “V” stands for vertical, which is an industry standard designation for a vertical mill. Gene Haas, founder of Haas Automation, added “F1” to the name to unofficially designate it as the company’s “Very First One”. Now as chairman of Haas F1 Team, the “F1”
moniker of that first machine takes on new significance as Haas joins the 2016 FIA Formula One World Championship, becoming the first American-led Formula One team in 30 years. “From an international standpoint, Formula One is the highest echelon of racing, and Haas Automation builds the highest-quality machine tools,” said Haas, who has grown Haas Automation into the largest machine tool builder in North America with more than $1 billion in annual sales. “When you hear ‘F1’ you know exactly what it is – a global racing series that showcases the latest

technology and attracts the best talent in engineering and design. Haas Automation has an excellent reputation in the United States and I want that reputation to grow worldwide. Connecting Haas Automation with F1 in name and in practice is the best way to grow our business and elevate Haas Automation to a premium, global brand,” he added. The dark gray, light gray and redtoned livery of the VF-16 was derived from the scheme of Haas
Automation’s complete line of vertical and horizontal machining centers, turning centers and rotary tables and indexers. Approximately 1,300 employees encompass Haas Automation, with the Oxnard, California-based company exporting its machines to more than 60 countries.

McLaren-Honda unveils the New MP4-31 for 2016 FIA F1 Championship McLaren-Honda unveiled its new challenger, the McLaren Honda MP4-31, prior to its winter testing at the Circuit de BarcelonaCatalunya, for the upcoming 2016 FIA Formula One (F1) World Championship. The Honda RA616H, a compact, 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine with ERS will be fitted into this car for the 2016 season. The MP4-31 is a matured evolution of last year’s car, owing to a continuity of the technical regulations for 2016, with a balance of elegant aerodynamics paired with a highly spaceefficient power unit. McLaren-Honda driver Fernando Alonso said, “The
start of a new season is always a special feeling, characterised by a lot of anticipation for the year ahead. This year is no different: I’m excited and raring to go. Last year the spotlight was very much on McLaren-Honda as we embarked on the first year of our renewed partnership. It was a tricky season for all of us, but we learned a hell of a lot.” “The aero package shows fantastic attention to detail. The whole car is beautiful in fact – it’s particularly nicely packaged from an aerodynamic point of view as I say – and I’m 100
per cent ready for the challenge ahead,” he stated. Alonso’s teammate Jenson Button said, “I really can’t wait to take the wheel of the new MP4-31 tomorrow. All Formula 1 drivers need a winter break, but I’m massively excited to get started on the 2016 season now, and I have to say the brand-new McLaren-Honda MP4-31 really looks the part.” “Despite the ups and downs we saw
last year, there were steady improvements all year long, and that gives us confidence in the design direction we’re taking. There are a lot of positives we can build on, and a strong platform to take forward. I’m not about to make any overoptimistic predictions – Formula 1 is far too unpredictable for me to do that – but, from what I’ve seen so far, the aero detailing on the car looks fantastic, and I’m really looking forward to beginning the process of testing those new innovations when I get behind the wheel tomorrow,” he added.
Sebastien Ogier secures 3rd Rally Sweden victory in 2016 FIA WRC Reigning world champion Sebastien Ogier drove his Volkswagen Polo R to a 29.8sec success in the Karlstad-based snow and ice rally to add to his 2013 and 2015 triumphs. Ogier also claimed full bonus points for winning the final Power Stage and after two of the 14 rounds the Frenchman has maximum championship points. A big thaw before the start threatened the season’s only pure winter rally as the frozen gravel roads turned to mud. By the time the cold weather returned, nine of the 21 speed tests in Sweden and Norway had been axed, but up to 10cm of snow and temperatures

as low as -10˚C ensured the event went ahead. Ogier’s dominance was challenged during the second leg on February 13, 2016 when he had to sweep fresh snow from the roads to create a cleaner line for those behind. His half-minute lead was slashed to less than 10sec by Hayden Paddon before he reasserted his authority. “Two wins from the first two rallies – it can’t get any better. Yesterday was a little bit too crazy and I took risks like I had never done in my life,” said Ogier, who survived a massive sixth gear slide on the final day on February 14, 2016.

ZBEE STARTS ITS INDIA JOURNEY MOTOWN INDIA BUREAU
I
t is by far the sexiest and the most hygienic three-wheeler ever seen in India. No, it’s not an ordinary three-wheeler and nor is it an auto. They call it the “Zbee” (pronounced zeebee) and it has been brought into India by Clean Motion, a Swedish company. The Zbee is one of the most advanced electric commercial vehicles and it has been formally launched in India. The Zbee is so advanced a three-wheeler that all its three seats come with 3 point seat belts. The vehicle has been homologated through iCAT under L5 category for electric vehicles and has undergone 18 different tests. The company has received permission to ply anywhere in India but is starting its operation in Haryana. Unlike ordinary and unsafe e-rickshaws that run in certain parts of Delhi, the Zbees will carry registration numbers and be driven by licensed drivers. The vehicle contains a slew of technologically advanced functions and will also have an android screen for advertisements and updates. As part of a cluster, 10 Zbees were flagged off during the day from DLF CyberHub. The first cluster of 25 Zbees would offer the last mile connectivity from DLF CyberHub to nearby offices (of DLF Cyber City) and later on Metro stations. The company plans to utilise these Zbees at DLF Saket, Noida and then later move to Agra and Jaipur and finally to all the 20 smart cities and Incredible India tourists spots where battered e-rickshaws are currently plying, thereby ensuring that

R-L: Goran Folkesson, CEO, Clean Motion AB, Anil Arora, Country Head & Nures Sayeed, Director Marketing, Zbee India Pvt. Ltd. India gives its best impression to foreigners in terms of hygienic and efficient transport systems. The vehicles will be operated under a franchise model. Zbee is already running successfully across Europe and Indonesia, and India is now going to be an important market for the new generation clean electric vehicle. Zbee, a smartly designed and researched vehicle in Sweden, promises to be a safe, efficient and eco-friendly transport solution for the very important Indian market, where last mile connectivity is becoming an important concern. An energy efficient electric vehicle, Zbee promises to significantly improve the environment both locally and globally, through energy efficiency and zero emissions. Zbee has entered into an arrangement with DLF, to operate

Zbees from various retail format in Delhi-NCR. Said Göran Folkesson, Clean Motion CEO, “We all know that fossil fuels run vehicles have contributed significantly in adding the carbon footprint/ emissions in our environment, to combat this at Clean Motion we started developing technology which is “lean”, “clean” and “safe” and can be a potential alternative transport solution and this led to Zbee. We are delighted that India is concerned and is now open to and is looking at alternative solutions, and I am confident Zbee would soon become the preferred mode of transport for shorter distances.” Zbee is made up of state-ofthe-art FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) body, due to which the vehicle manages to strike a perfect balance between lightness and
safety. It comes with an advance Lithium battery and a full charge allows it to be driven for upto 50 kms. Clean Motion has so far invested over US$ 1 million in
India and would be pumping in US$ 10 million by 2017. Currently Zbee is being assembled in India at Faridabad and the India team expects to bring down the production cost significantly by

Anil Arora, Country Head, Clean Motion India, “I am proud and delighted to say that with Zbee, we are addressing two key areas: one is ‘Make In India’, as increasingly we are working on assembling the Zbee in India, which would help in lowering the production cost and thus helping to increase the distribution and expansion and simultaneously be a partner and contributor towards the Government’s “Smart City” plans. It’s imperative that all of us, work on creating and implementing solutions which are clean and environment friendly and Zbee will be just doing that.” He further added, “ We hope we can closely work with ‘FAME’ Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles

are the first in NCR to take this road less travelled. We hope that it provides convenience and ease to people across DLF Cyber City. Along with the Rapid Metro, now reaching CyberHub from virtually anywhere is an experience in itself.”

COVER REPORT
INTERVIEW WITH GORAN FOLKESSON CEO, Clean Motion AB What has been the response of this vehicle in Sweden? Well in Sweden this is a very new vehicle because in Europe we are more accustomed to normal cars and this is an open three-wheeler which is much more suited for the more tropical landscapes of Indonesia and India. The experience in Sweden is very good but it’s still a very new product for the Swedish market. We have successfully taken it far north in Sweden and the vehicle performs nicely on snow as well. Since we have dual motors we get a very nice performance from the summer tyres but there is a possibility to put on winter tyres as well. What has been your experience in Indonesia with the Zbee? It is at a starting point. We have only a few vehicles with temporary registration plates there but some of them have clocked long distances in Indonesia. The climate is very different and quite stable. It is 32 degrees celsius every day so the performance is very good. The climate is perfect for the batteries. In Sweden it gets very cold so even lithium batteries are affected as the distance you can go in cold climes is significantly shorter. How strong is this vehicle? The vehicle is very strong, we have 4Kw motors and since it weighs only 270kgs the acceleration is very good. We have a software cap on the maximum speed. The speed has been capped at 45kmph and it could be tuned for higher speeds. But that means more energy consumption and for Delhi traffic its more a matter of reducing the top speed rather than increasing it. Technically it can be tuned to go up to 65-70kmph.
www.motownindia.com
The vehicle has cleared 15 odd tests in the L5 category. What are these tests? They are a bunch of traditional tests but doing them with fully modern electric vehicles is a new thing. It is also new for test agencies. Electromagnetic compatibility test, noise test, brake test, etc. The noise test is very funny because these vehicles have no noise so they had to re do the test because the machine recorded only ambient noise. We have conducted a crash test in Sweden but it is actually not part of any legislative procedures. We need to do legislative tests for seat belts but not for crash tests but we conducted the crash test at a private facility. The vehicle performed exactly as we designed
it to do. The composites used are very good to absorb energy which is what is needed for a crash situation. The important thing in a crash is to keep the body structure intact and the second is to ensure the passengers are still inside and that is why you need seatbelts. Volvo was the first to introduce the three point seatbelt and safety has been a very important matter for Sweden. So we are just taking the heritage forward and introducing it to this vehicle.
India by different names Auto, Tuk-Tuk, etc. What do you want people to call this threewheeler? We want to call it the Zbee because that is the name of the product and it stands for zero emissions working bee.

AUTO EXPO 2016 INTERVIEWS
ARVIND BALAJI, President, ACMA

First and foremost, what are your impressions of the show? Is it getting better? I think in the true spirit of continuous improvement, our show is getting better and better each time. I think this year it has gone off well. The feedback we have received is that the quality and spread of participation has been very good. There have been tremendous innovations by various suppliers. It has been a very exciting show. This time around there has been an Innovations Pavilion. What’s this all about? Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about “Make in India” and we took that message very deeply. For our industry we translated that as Make Quality and Technology in India. These are the only two parameters that matter for the automotive sector. We themed our whole year around it. Keeping in line with the theme we kept an Innovations Pavilion here. What we were trying to showcase was there are many Indian companies that are designing, developing products here in India of world class standards and also supplying
to world class customers. We wanted to bring it all together and who it to people can have a look. So far you do not get the feeling that Indian is an Innovations Centre. We wanted to showcase that innovations is happening here now. Do you now find Indian auto components companies working ahead of the curve when it comes to technology? Absolutely! I think different companies are different stages of evolution. But you are seeing every company making an honest and sincere effort to go up the value chain, investing in R&D, investing in innovations, and I think when you walk across the various pavilions you get a clear sense that technology development is a major thrust for many entrepreneurs. Participants are generally happy with the fact that the two shows—Components and Motor Show--- are at two different locations. Yet many said closer proximity of the locations would have been better. Do you agree with that? I think as it stands now, it is
what it is. But I would like to make a point here that the OEs have been very supportive, almost every company has sent a delegation of their senior management and engineers here. People have taken the effort to come here. This has also given more space to people to showcase things. To be frank, it has gone on quite well. This is the second edition in two different locations and everything has gone on well. It would be nicer if the two shows were closer together. With Prime Minister’s “Make in India” initiative are auto component manufacturers far more aggressive in their growth strategies? We are hoping that the tide has started to change. We are seeing some pockets of growth. The car market has been growing at a stable pace. The commercial vehicle market has picked up now. The rural markets are a bit subdued but we expect that to come back soon. Indian companies are really pushing to go global. You are seeing a lot energy on how to expand.
The Asli-Naqli pavilion continues to have a presence at the show here. Are spurious spare parts still an area of concern for the industry? I think what people do not realise is the automotive aftermarket is a very large market. But it is also a very uncontrolled market. There are no standards in place for products to be sold in the aftermarket. In fact there are imports of components into India which have no standards and no certification. Whatever regulations you put in place in the original equipment side, if the aftermarket does not keep pace with that you could have all the good work done on safety and emissions undone in the aftermarket with spurious parts being fitted.

by 2020---the challenges therein. First of all it is a very exciting step for us and also for India and its economy. It’s a challenge from an infrastructure perspective. In terms of product readiness, as I mentioned the light duty Visctronic, we have a complete product portfolio in thermal as well as the entire BorgWarner

INTERVIEWS AUTO EXPO 2016 family which is supporting the OEMs to be successful in meeting the emissions legislation. On how technology is evolving Let me describe the two main drivers changing the technology. One is we are going into a deeper system integration into vehicles and the second is the electrification. If you see our products like the bi metal fan drives, it will now be an electronically controlled device where the speed demand for the fan is actually coming from the engine ECU. On the challenges posed by
electrification of vehicles The electrification of vehicles is at a slightly different speed if you compare commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles. In passenger car segment, full electric and hybrid vehicles are already ready and will continue to be wider spread. We have products that are being specifically being developed in that segment. Then there are coolant pumps that support start stop feature as well as cooler electric vehicles. In the CV segment also we have products supporting electric and hybrid vehicles.
On the company’s focus segments in India From a thermal perspective we have several segment strategies. We have a segment strategy for commercial vehicles. For passenger cars, for off high way vehicles like tractors and construction vehicles. From a business priority perspective, CV is the most important segment for us in India. We are also migrating into the passenger car segment and I think despite the market volatility the off highway segment will continue to be an important segment for us to work. On absorption of newer
technology by Indian OEMs vis a vis foreign OEMs. In general there was always a very steady migration of technology into India. But challenges remain like infrastructure, construction of roads (which slowed down a bit of the migration because of lack of requirement) etc. But India remains a very exciting market. With the emissions implementation (BS VI by 2020), there will be an increase in the speed of technology migration. The entire OEM segment was prepared for that migration and that just required a spark and the BS VI will make that happen.
K D SAHNI, Joint Managing Director, On new products displayed at Auto Expo 2016 We are displaying a lot of new products which include those we are developing for several OEMs. These include water separators, air filter assemblies, etc. On the company’s target audience The target is OEMs, after market as well as export customers. We have a very healthy mix of all the
three in our turnover. There is no one specific segment we are looking at. On the stand alone Components Show We are very happy. We are getting quality customer which means we are getting business. The crowds and the glamour have gone to Greater Noida. When the shows were combined (Components and Motor Show)
there were a few important clients of ours who could not even enter because of the crowds outside. At least that kind of a nuisance value is not there. Having put in all the efforts and money, definitely we expect our clients to come here. Our view point is that the two shows need to be separate. Madhus Garage Equipments Pvt Ltd On the new products being displayed at the Auto Expo 2016 This time we are bringing in the latest Hunter Revolution tyre changer which was launched in the US last year and is one of its kind. This tyre changer is fully automatic. This is what we are displaying here and it is a real crowd puller. We are the representatives for Hunter company of the US and a few others from India. We market their products in the entire country. We have been in the business for the last 27 years. We represent the major brand like Hunter of US, Ravaglioli and Texa of Italy, etc which are garage equipment while we have other companies like Telwin which is into welding equipment, Rotary another US brand, among others. On the company’s focus areas
Our main focus is on the passenger cars segment. We are also into suspension of truck industry segment. We market Hunter truck wheel aligners and wheel balancers. The there are lifting and tyre changing equipment for trucks. We are active in both the segments. On the growth of the garage equipment industry Our growth is directly proportional to the growth of the automobile industry growth. The growth in the automobile industry is booming today and in the passenger car segment we see the launch of a lot of new models. This means a lot more dealerships and in turn we are growing too. We are catering mainly to the premium segment of all the cars. We have got approvals from every OEM in India. We
supply our equipment to their production lines and even their R&D centres. Today we can proudly say that every R&D centre of almost every manufacturer is using some of our equipment in their R&D labs. We have also got approvals from every manufacturer for their service centres across India. We also supply to almost every workshop in India plus the tyre industry. On the stand alone Auto Components show I have been participating in the Auto Expo since 1998. All the time the garage equipment players were pushed into a corner but this time we are in a proper building. With such expensive equipment that we have, we were not happy to
be pushed in one corner of the fair ground. Now we have ben given a prominent place and this time we only have serious people visiting our stall. When the components and motor shows were combined years back we had people more interested in seeing cars and they used to barge into our stalls to see whether we were selling any cars. But today we are happy to note that we are having a better response than the previous shows. This time its far more focussed.

On the demand for these new products Definitely there will be demand from the heavy vehicles segment where the tyre wear is very heavy. The wheels have to be aligned properly otherwise it will be very abnormal for the vehicle. There are no cost effective solutions in the market, so we are bringing
these cost effective solutions. For the technicians it will mean less time consumed and less energy used. On the demand from different segments Passenger vehicles segment requires a different set of machines. The CV segment requires a different set of machines. We develop machines that cater to the needs of both the segments. On the overall size of Manatec I have more than 300 employees. I have 50 people working in my R&D team. We export to more than 60 countries. We have around 60 dealers in India and business associates. We have a huge network in place.
On the overall size of the garage equipment industry in India It is very difficult to assess because the garage equipment industry has got around one hundred different products. Each of the products has many versions. Not everything is made by everybody. I make tyre care equipment and pollution checking equipment but I am not making soe of the mechanical equipment. On having a separate venue for Auto Expo-Components Show It is a very good idea. The customers who are coming here are very much focussed
and those who are very serious about buying or understanding the products. Previously we used to get all kinds of visitors and sometimes the focus was lost. We want this model to continue.

Marketing, National Engineering Industries Ltd On NBC products being displayed at the Auto Expo 2016 We are a leading bearing company in India and the way technology requirement are moving, we are displaying two products which are very interesting. One is about wheel bearings. We have introduced a product known as pre-set hubs which are sued in heavy commercial vehicles. The advantage of this product is that gives very high maintenance free life. Currently, the conventional assembly the truck manufacturers are using, that gives a maintenance life of around one lakh kilometres. This particular technology gives around 3 lakh kilometres service free. The second technology we are trying to introduce to our customers is on two wheeler platform. What we have displayed here is a transmission technology
www.motownindia.com
called IVT. Today scooters give a fuel efficiency of around 50km per litre, as compared to a fuel efficiency of around 80 to 85 kmpl for motorcycles. Now this particular transmission has a capability to deliver 80 to 90 kmpl on a scooter. The scooter will now have around the same fuel efficiency as a motorcycle. It is a very revolutionary product. We are at the concept stage as of now. We have displayed the prototype here. A lot of our
customers have had a lot of questions on that. On focus segments in the market We around 80pc catering to OEMs. Of course we are present in the aftermarket but our basic focus is on OEMs. We are basically targeting OEMs here. On the overall response to the Components Show
Our experience is very good. The quality of people we are getting at the stall is excellent. Relevant people are coming to the stall and spending quality time here. In the earlier shows, the general public was so large that it was impossible to manage the stall. We find that by separating the two shows, Components and Motor Show, has been very innovative. Having said that, if both the shows had some proximity instead of a long distance, maybe a ten minutes distance, it would have been much more convenient.

On reasons why Uno Minda has not participated in the show. There is no specific reason for that. We always thought it is better for us to go directly
to the OEMs and do our own technology presentation. This gets us better mileage. Such meetings can have the OEM senior engineers also participating. On the Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2016 The show has been a real success with a lot of launches. Every company has done well. From the Maruti Suzuki Brezza to the Toyotas and Hondas, all have done well with new launches. Even the two wheeler players have done a good job. I am sure the Indian auto industry has a
great future. On Uno Minda’s collaboration with Honda Car India Honda connect has been a very good collaboration between us and Honda. We are very proud of ourselves and Honda to have collaborated. I foresee a very good success in the future for both the companies. On the “Make in India” initiative and the progress it has made I think we are in the right direction but we need to
give more focus on the technology front. We can do the manufacturing but technology and innovation are the things that will benefit us in the future. More focus on technology and telematics, etc will be important for our industry.
NIRAJ HANS, COO (Automotive),
Sandhar Technologies Ltd On the products displayed at the Auto Expo Everything we are showing here is new. Primarily we have been known as mechanical locks and mirrors company but today if you see our products we are mostly into electronics. As per our customer demand we are having a pro active approach from the development point of view. All the mirrors, locks, security systems, handles, etc, we are progressing very well.
On the company’s focus areas Sandhar has never focussed on after market. Sandhar was born and brought up on the platform of OEMs and we are continuing to do so. On the new format of the Auto Expo-Components Show According to me, ever since this show has been bifurcated into OEMs and Auto Components, it’s been good for the components player. Only serious players are
coming in. The components industry is pretty happy with this bifurcation. On technology and if Sandhar is company ahead of the curve or still waits for the OEMs to show it the way Technology is basically driven in two ways. One is through our own innovations, within our centre, the Sandhar Centre of Innovation and Development. Second is, we are having some global tie ups as
well. So depending on customer requirement and keeping cost as a prime driver and technology in front, we try to offer solutions. In certain cases we are pro actively approaching customers and in some cases customers are approaching us also.
RAJESH PODDAR, Director-Business Development, Paracoat Products Ltd
On the products displayed at the Auto Expo We are basically into solutions for noise vibration and our efforts are into reducing the weight of the car, fir resistance products so that we are safe from accidents, etc. We have put up products pertaining to these areas.
On the response at the Auto Expo The response has been enormous from OEM customers. We are displaying here technologies that are in line with the OEM thought process. We provide all kinds of noise, vibration and heat insulation products for passenger cars, commercial vehicles,

tractors, heavy engineering equipment, etc. On the two shows— components and motorshow---being held in two different locations. People who are visiting us are more B2B customers. So we do not get a crowd that comes to

KIRAN DESHMUKH, Executive Vice Chairman,
On what the company displayed at the Auto Expo 2016 We have displayed a model of a car which is fitted with the products that we make with a focus on electric mobility. We are displaying here an electric assisted power steering, an electrically driven axle, etc. This is the first time we are trying out with a model like this. When people come, they need to know where the products are fitted
On customer response on the products displayed There’s been a huge positive response. When we opened this area to the public, there was a huge crowd. A lot of people have even taken selfies with this car. That is for the general public. But with the components show being separated from the main Motor Show, there is a lot of focussed attention here. Almost all our
customers have visited us. It’s been a very positive response. On the two auto Shows being bifurcated This is a perfect thing to happen. Now there is a real focus on our products. When the shows were held together, then the focus used to be on cars. Everybody would take time looking at cars launches and other vehicle launches. This being just components, the serious people are able to visit and the show is much more effective. On the company’s focus areas in terms of products Apart from the traditional products we have been making, the focus at the show for has
been electric driven products. The focus has been on the product we have developed for off highway application because normally they are small vehicles and there is no place to put a power steering because of several paraphernalia that are required, but we developed an electric and electronic steering for this niche application. It is very compact and gives the same results of a normal power steering. That has been our main focus and that has been put in this vehicle that is on display at our stall. There is another product displayed that is an e-axle. We have a range of products there right from an e-rickshaw to off highway application like a golf cart and utility vehicles etc.
MADHAV RAJGARHIA, CEO, Raaj Unocal Lubricants Ltd On products displayed at the Auto Expo The highlights for us this year is Lubistrands and Oil Detact. Coming to Lubistrands, we have developed a lubricant which defies gravity, defies stickiness, there is complete lubrication inside the engine, and this is targeted at heavy commercial vehicles and stationary engines which are not all weather engines but are running say six months in a year. The oil falls into the sump and the engine is susceptible to rust and oxidation. The oil has strands as a result of which there is complete lubrication inside the system. This is one technology we are show casing. The second technology we are showing is Detac. Once a product leaves its contained, its originality is lost. One cannot ascertain if it is your product or not. This technology also helps to identify the leakages in a system as well,
www.motownindia.com
especially in heavy commercial vehicles where you cannot identify the leakages under the body. Once you put it under UV light, the oil starts glowing in a peculiar colour, identifying the leakages. We are giving this as a special case to the OEMs with a particular colour for every company. They can identify any duplicity and address warranty costs. On the new technology and the demand for it from OEMs We had kept it under wraps. We are now showcasing it. We have got a phenomenal response from the OEMs. On the company’s focus areas We are both in the B2B as well as B2C segments. Around 80pc of our revenues comes from B2C aftermarket segment. In the B2B space we have been approved by Hindustan Motors, we have
their aftermarket, Atul Auto for its CNG oils, and the ACE Group which has Ace tractors and Ace Cranes. A few more are under consideration but none has been finalised. On the company’s marketshare There has been a strategy shift in the company. Earlier we were blending for other stalwarts. But for the p[ast four to five years we have stopped blending for other brands. We are focussing only on Unocal. Our CAGR for the last five years has been 107.5pc which is phenomenal because our industry is growing by 1 or 2 pc on the whole. We are grabbing market share slowly but we are not too big as of now but in the next five years we hope to be one of the top ten players in the country.
I am really happy that the Components Show and the Motor Show have been split. We now get a lot of quality crowd, rather than a quantity crowd. This is what the component manufacturers want. It also helps the heads of all the automotive companies to come here (Pragati Maidan) and hold quality discussions. This was not possible when the general crowd used to come in. We would love the general public to come in, but if it messes up the business aspect, then it is a no show for us.

DR. RAVI M DAMODARAN,

President-Technology & Strategy, Varroc Engineering Pvt Ltd.
On the company’s focus on being ahead of the curve in terms of technology It’s basically the expectation of customers from the industry. The trend has to change because previously the customer used to ask the supplier that we want this development or this concept and in turn the supplier used to work on that. We are trying to change that is a very familiar practice globally. The supplier has to work on technologies ahead of the expectation of the customers and the supplier has to have the capability to look at the market trends, the technology road maps, and come up with a few concepts that is required by the market. One of the ways that people do that is once they have to roadmap, they build the concepts and display on a preferred customer’s vehicle. We have done that here. For example, lighting is one of our products for the Indian twowheeler market. The technology on that are on the bikes are reflector based and bulbs. Going into the future with fuel efficiencies driving a lot of these technologies, we expect LEDs to come. LEDs are already there
on the rear lamps. Nobody has put them on the head lamps because of cost reasons, perhaps. We are saying for safety and fuel efficiency reasons, LED technology is better. We have actually done a lot of those concepts on our bikes like the LED headlamp projectors, LED multi focal reflectors, etc and the customers have appreciated that. They get a feel of the product in a much better way than sitting across and discussing that technology. Displaying a future concept is a trend most of us should get into and we certainly have. This is a standard practice abroad because they know what the customers need and build what is ahead of their customers’ expectations. This trend has to catch on in India and expectations from customers are high and customers are struggling because of a lack of a technology supplier base in India. All the companies that can invest in this technology have to take this up. On the response to the new technologies We had three of our customers come here on the first day and
they looked at our lamps and they asked us to do technology shows and we even got an RFQ (Request For Quotation). That was my best outcome. So I think it certainly works. On other products displayed at the show Lighting is one product we are displaying in a big way, whether it is four-wheeler or two-wheelers. We are also displaying our electric and electronic products for two-wheelers. We have not got to a stage where we can display concepts on things like an integrated starter generator systems or hybrid systems... things we are working on. It is too early to display the concept yet. But certainly we have go interest from the customers. In metallic we have the hollow valves and the sodium filled valves. This is also a next generation technology for India. Other than that, security systems are something which is a big market need here. We have not seen too many of them on
commuter bikes. It is certainly there on the premium bikes. We are trying to push them on the commuter bikes. On impressions of the show I see a lot these suppliers getting on to the R&D bandwagon. That is very good. Earlier one saw a lot of traders displaying somebody else’s technology. We now have a lot of home grown suppliers displaying concepts. That means working on something using one’s capabilities and trying to understand the customer needs rather than relying on the customer asking them what to do. This is a good trend. I can clearly see a R&D revolution in India. In the past shows, one saw multinationals doing that now we have home grown companies doing that.

Volvo delivers the first hybrid bus in India Volvo Buses India has taken a lead by introducing Volvo Hybrid City Bus in the country. Navi Mumbai becomes the first ever city in India to adopt hybrid buses. This was announced on the side-lines of the Make in India Week in Mumbai. Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Löfven handed over a symbolic key of the bus to Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Phadnavis at a ceremony organised in Mumbai on February 14, 2016. Volvo Buses has received certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for the Hybrid City Bus. Volvo Buses is the first bus manufacturer to commercially deploy the hybrid technology in India. Globally, Volvo has pioneered the electromobility programme that includes electric hybrid, plug-in electric hybrid and full electric buses for city commute applications. With over 2,400 hybrid buses sold in more than 20 countries, the operational viability of this technology has been proven with some customers placing repeat orders. Through the entire electromobility programme, over 5,000 hybrid and full electric buses have been sold till date, which includes various Volvo group bus brands.
THE NEW VOLVO 8400 HYBRID CITY BUS The Volvo 8400 Hybrid City Bus
is a variant of the existing Volvo City Bus, nearly 1,500 units of which are currently operating in 34 cities across India. This new Volvo 8400 Hybrid City Bus has a parallel hybrid system, which comprises a 5-litre, 4-cylinder, in-line diesel engine and an electric motor. The vehicle is propelled purely on electric mode from the moment is starts till it gains required momentum. This phenomenon happens at every stop & start during the operation cycle, which results in significant fuel savings and reduction in emissions. The batteries get charged during operations by the re-generative brake system. One of the biggest benefits of the hybrid technology is the reduction in noise levels – both inside and outside the bus. This has direct impact on the overall experience for passengers with lower NVH levels. The vehicle also has the Volvo I-Coaching, a one-of-its-kind on-board driver training system that ensures the best performance from the hybrid system. The telematics system with fleet and vehicle management
capabilities monitors & generates fuel reports, vehicle health reports, specific battery usage and health monitoring feature. This bus meets the Bus Body Code and the Urban Bus specification norms. It is equipped with active, passive and personal safety features. This include two fire extinguishers, hammers to break the glass, long hammers to help break the glass from outside, internal stop request and emergency stop request switches, external electric and pneumatic door operating switches, fire suppression system in the engine hatch area, etc. Akash Passey, Senior Vice President - Business Region International, Volvo Buses said,
“This is a significant development that the first hybrid bus being introduced in India is a Volvo. Volvo Buses has played a pioneering role in the area of bus-based public transport in many countries. From developing BRT related solutions, to cleaner technologies, Volvo has always taken the initiative with the intent to make a difference. The Volvo hybrid solution has a proven track record of saving 30 to 35 percent fuel. The technology also enables up to 50 percent reduction in hazardous emissions in actual customer operations . We are confident that this initiative will spur demand from other cities in India for Volvo’s hybrid mobility solutions.”

NEWS UNION BUDGET 2016-17
Automotive industry grins and bears it, as usual
Union Minister for Finance, Corporate Affairs and Information & Broadcasting Arun Jaitley departs from North Block to Parliament House along with Minister of State for Financei Jayant Sinha to present the General Budget 2016-17, in New Delhi on February 29, 2016. Picture courtesy: PIB As has always been happening in the past, the Indian automotive industry has been left with no other choice, but to grin and bear it and pretend everything is hunky- dory. An additional 1 per cent tax will now be collected at source on purchase of cars exceeding value of Rs 10 lakh. There will also be an infrastructure cess of 1pc on small petrol, LPG, CNG cars, a 2.5pc on small diesel cars of less than 1500 cc and 4pc cess on other higher engine capacity vehicles and SUVs. All this would be levied with immediate effect. All those now going out to buy
passenger vehicles will have to fork out a bit more for their dream machines. Companies like Toyota, Mercedes and M&M have already been dealt with a body blow when a few months back the Supreme Court banned sale of diesel vehicles above 2000cc in Delhi National Capital Region. But the Indian auto industry is not looking at this; rather it is positive on some of the Union Budget proposals that talk of macroeconomic developments.
VINOD DASARI, President, Society of Indian Autombile

Manufacturers (SIAM) said that the Union budget for the fiscal year 2016-17 is a mixed bag for the Indian Automobile Industry. The Union Budget aims to boost the rural economy of the country and the biggest positive in the announcements made by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, is the impetus given to the rural, agricultural and infrastructure segment, he said. But SOHINDER GILL, CEO Hero Electric has a different view. “We expected the budget to give us long term clarity on NEMMP so that the manufacturer
can plan business accordingly. There is no mention of Electric vehicle in the budget except the continuation of concession import duty that too only for one year. This has left all the manufacturers in the dilemma on the government plan on promoting Green Technology,” he said.
AMIT JAIN, Partner, M&A, BMR & Associates LLP noted the additional taxes pertaining to the auto industry will mean that the cost will be passed on the car manufacturers to customers, so expect increase in auto prices. “Will have some impact

NEWS on car sales, but if the interest rates keep a lower trajectory (ie RBI cuts interest rates coming forward), then EMI’s may not materially change,” he noted. “There are no specific fiscal measures in the budget to stimulate the auto sector as such. The cess/ tax collection at source will dampen the spirits of the auto sector. Significant outlay for roads and highways will only provide some indirect/ trickle over effect to the industry over time,” he added. There was little on the structural reforms front including Goods and Services Tax (GST). The tax reform, considered the biggest in India’s nearly 70 years history as an independent nation, has been automotive industry’s biggest demand from the government. The tax reform found a mention in the minister’s speech but the government failed to provide a roadmap for the reform which is facing stiff political opposition, said a note from IHS Automotive. IHS currently expects light vehicle sales in India to expand 10.3pc to 3.4 million units this year while sales of MHCVs is expected to decline 3.7pc to nearly 330,300 units as a result of last year’s high base.
is most welcome....” But then he added that “On the face of it, imposing upto 4pc cess for Passenger vehicles is a concern for auto industry. However, one has to take it in stride, in view of all the priorities that we have for our economy and we in the industry have to manage it. Would have been good if some of the additional revenue from this cess was used to phase out older vehicles.”
MS. MALLIKA SRINIVASAN, Chairman and CEO, Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited said, “It is heartening
SHEKAR VISWANATHAN, Vice Chairman and Whole - Time Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd,
to note that an emphasis on MNREGA has been retained although the increase in allocation is modest, as original budget allocation for 2015-16 was around Rs.35,000 crores. We hope to see improved implementation on MNREGA, as the implementation on the ground during 2015-16 was disappointing.”
stated “We would have expected some measures to promote alternate fuel technologies which would have helped the environment also. We would encourage the government not to just think based on size of the vehicle which has no relation to the technology. Taking older vehicles off the road should be a priority for the government....”
DR. PAWAN GOENKA, Executive Director, M&M Ltd said, “The Budget places strong emphasis on agriculture, rural economy, infrastructure and social sector. This is what I was hoping for. The resurgence and thrust on the PPP in infrastructure
ASHOK P HINDUJA, Chairman, Hinduja Group of Companies (India) said that the Budget is pragmatic and growth-oriented. “The auto sector will stand to benefit by the proposed amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act to allow the private sector participation in the passenger vehicle segment”.
SUMIT SAWHNEY, Country CEO & Managing Director, Renault India Operations said the Government has succeeded in ensuring that the Indian economy has held its own despite the prevailing uncertain environment and global headwinds. But, policies for the automobile sector remained largely unchanged, he said.
DR. WILFRIED AULBUR, Managing Partner & CEO, India, Chairman Middle East, Head Automotive Asia at Roland Berger, noted, “The budget overall has been muted as far as passenger vehicles are
78 | MOTOWN INDIA | MARCH 2016
concerned. The charges on luxury vehicles and high capacity SUVs may not dent sales, but clearly, these charges don’t support demand either. The same holds true for the pollution cess on various car models.” But he noted that the “Increased expenditure for rural areas is likely to increase rural demand and hence drive consumption. This would overall be positive for the industry, increase capacity utilization and in the long run drive private capital expenditure. Together with the 7th pay commission and OROP this hopefully puts enough money into the pockets of Indian consumers to support domestic growth. Global economies are not doing very well. Exports into many markets with low or negative GDP growth are falling and indicate the weakness in the global environment. Hence, India will have to generate her own success story focusing on domestic fundamentals.”
PANKAJ MUNJAL, Chairman and Managing Director, Hero Cycles stated that the Finance Minister has chosen to deliver a budget that charts a new direction to the economy with renewed reforms and resurgence. The government’s commitment to keep fiscal deficit in check is a very assuring move so is the focus on improving ease of doing business. The emphasis on road infrastructure in particular would pave the way to a robust economy as well, he said.
JOE KING, Head, Audi India said that while the budget presents a transformative agenda with clear-cut focus on initiatives for farmers, rural sector and infrastructure development, it negatively impacts the automobile industry. “We are disappointed that the industry’s demand on reducing excise duty has not been addressed,” he said.
JBM Group’s Executive Director NISHANT ARYA
noted that the budget paves way for equitable growth through skill development and job creation which in turn would lead to an exponential increase in demand for goods and services in the economy.
YADVINDER SINGH GULERIA, Senior Vice President - Sales & Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. said the Finance Minister has walked a fine rope of balancing social welfare with economic growth. “In the backdrop of 2 consecutive weak monsoons, the Government’s focus on rural sector especially farmer welfare, education, interest subvention on existing loans and skill development will inject strength in rural economy. The Rs 1 lakh crore allocation on road and highways will accelerate connectivity and mobility across all geographies led by rural areas, which is very positive news for overall auto industry. Overall, we expect such measures once implemented, will revive the stagnant demand of 2Wheelers in the rural market,” he stated.
ROLAND FOLGER, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said that while development of the agrarian sector emerged as the key priority in this year’s budget, which is positive for the Indian economy, the taxing the luxury cars will be deterrent for the growth of the industry.
DR RAGHUPATI SINGHANIA, Chairman and Managing Director, JK Tyre & Industries Ltd said “The nation would have to wait and see its implementation, but the Budget definitely generates substantial amount of positive sentiments.... Although there is nothing direct for the industry or for that matter manufacturing sector, there is enough scope to generate demand and kick start the industry”.

Universal Robots, the Danish robot manufacturer comes to India Danish Ambassador to India Peter Taksoe-Jensen launched Universal Robots, the Danish robot manufacturer that pioneered collaborative robots, in New Delhi. The collaborative robots range was unveiled in a launch event by Esben Ostergaard, Chief Technology Officer of Universal Robots, along with Pradeep David, General Manager, India. Human-robot collaboration has come of age with collaborative robots (also called co-bots) designed to work with humans and assist them with a variety of tasks. Co-bots help automate and streamline repetitive and potentially unsafe processes thus, ensuring safe work environment while increasing productivity
and efficiency. Given these advantages, small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) are eager to adopt this technology. In a human-machine study conducted by MIT researchers at a BMW factory, it was shown that teams made of humans and robots collaborating efficiently can be around 85% more productive than teams made of either humans or robots alone. Also, the cooperative process reduced human idle time by virtue of its pace-setting ability. With the goal of making robot technology accessible for small and medium sized enterprises, Universal Robots offers simple, flexible and affordable collaborative robot arms- UR3, UR5 and UR10 named after their

payloads in kilos. Workers can collaborate with the robots in close proximity on assembly lines with no safety guarding (subject to application risk assessments) The co-bots are easy to program and the first set up takes less than one hour. They can also be moved easily around the production facility for multiple applications. Flexible ±360 degree rotation of all joints allows usage in confined spaces. Infinite rotation of the UR3 tool is possible for screwing and drilling applications. The cobots can be floor, ceiling, and wall mounted as required. Universal Robots makes robot technology accessible to all levels of industry.

Volvo launches first keyless car Volvo Cars has plans to become the first automotive manufacturer to offer cars without keys from 2017. Volvo will make this feature available to its customers through a digital key which can be accessed from an app in their mobile phones. This new technology will be Bluetooth enabled providing customers more flexibility. The new app from Volvo will enable its customers to perform every function which a physical key is capable of. The digital key will be able to lock or unlock the doors and the boot as well as starting the engine. The app further enables the customers to access more than digital key, thus a customer can have access to various Volvo cars at different locations. Thus the application
platform can also be availed by customers looking to rent out Volvo vehicles across the globe where they can book and pay for a rental car and have the key digital key delivered to their mobile phones. Henrik Green, Vice President Product Strategy & Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars, said, “At Volvo we are not interested in technology for the sake of technology. New technology has to make our customers’ lives easier and save them time. Mobility needs are evolving and so are the customer’s expectations to access cars in an uncomplicated way. Our innovative digital key technology has the potential to completely change how a Volvo can be accessed and shared. Instead of sitting idle in
a parking lot the entire day, cars could be used more often and efficiently by whomever the owner wishes.” The test pilot for this project will be run at the Gothenburg
airport, Sweden in the spring season of 2016 via its car sharing firm Sunfleet. A limited number of commercially available cars will be equipped with the new digital key technology in 2017.
Continental develops new in-vehicle radio platform Car radios have to fulfil a large number of consumer requirements, for example digital radio, AM and FM reception, mobile telephony, audio from a variety of sources, large touch screens, soft and hard keys, voice-operated control and smartphone apps. Even for vehicles in more price driven segments, radios have evolved from simple tuners and amplifiers to proper entertainment hubs. With the dawn of the connected vehicle, as well as different standards and operating systems from consumer electronics, the trends show that the complexity of car radios is increasing. To
www.motownindia.com
cope with these challenges, the international technology company Continental has developed a progressive vehicle radio platform, which allows control of numerous individual functions on one processor, ultimately reducing hardware to a minimum. “Complexity for vehicle entertainment is increasing rapidly. With our new radio platform we can now offer a solution, which not only copes with a vast variety of functions, but is highly cost effective and usable for vehicle manufacturers worldwide,” said Johann Hiebl, head of the Continental business unit
Infotainment & Connectivity. The main approach behind Continental’s radio platform is simple: Replace cost intensive hardware with software, wherever possible. To achieve this reduction the Continental radio platform is built on a highly optimised system on chip (SoC). It has a multi core processor at the heart of the platform that is handling all human machine interface, connectivity and audio-post processing related functions, as well as an integrated
vehicle controller and a digital signal processor (DSP) that is enabling the core radio technology of the new platform – the Software Defined Radio (SDR). The SDR integrates analog and digital radio standards such as AM/ FM, DAB/DAB+/ DMB, DRM and HD radio worldwide on a single hardware. New standards can be enabled by software update as they become available in different regions, for example Chinese Digital Radio (CDR) in China.
