P. THARYAN (ROY) he year 2020 has not really begun on a good note. The slide in sales of passenger vehicles, two wheelers and commercial vehicles continues. In the midst of all this ongoing crises, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers of India (SIAM)
organised the Auto Expo 2020. The show saw a majority of vehicle manufacturers in India staying away. Had it not been for a clutch of Chinese companies and several electric two-wheeler companies, the show would have been a huge disaster. Monetary wise, it would definitely have been a big blow for the organisers. And to make matters worse, a double whammy came in the form of coronavirus, which in essence meant that a lot of very senior Chinese automobile officials could not travel to India. The March 2020 edition of Motown India carries an exhaustive report on the Auto Expo-The Motor Show 2020. PININFARINA PURE-ELECTRIC HYPER GT BATTISTA ANNIVERSARIO LAUNCHED AT `21.23 CRORE
Automobili Pininfarina, an Italian design house owned by Mahindra & Mahindra, has unveiled the ultimate expression of the world’s first luxury pure-electric hyper GT, the Battista Anniversario. Battista Anniversario cars will be hand-crafted in Cambiano, Turin, where Pininfarina has established its design centre and headquarters. Just five will be created, each priced from Euros 2.6 million (Rs 21.23 crore approx), making the Battista Anniversario one of the world’s most exclusive automobiles. The Battista Anniversario celebrates 90 years since Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina created the legendary Pininfarina coachbuilder and design house,

and is the most powerful sports car ever to be designed and built in Italy. The Anniversario shares its technical underpinnings with the Battista. This delivers a level of performance that is unachievable today in any road-legal sports car with an internal combustion engine. NEW GEN PORSCHE 911 TURBO S COUPE AND CABRIOLET UNVEILED
Porsche has unveiled the new-generation 911 Turbo S for the global markets. The new range-topping 911 is the quickest and most powerful 911 Turbo model ever. With 640 hp, it offers an unprecedented combination of power, driving dynamics, and everyday usability. A new 3.8-litre boxer engine with two VTG turbochargers represents the beating heart of the car and puts out 60 hp more than its predecessor. Maximum torque now stands at 590 lb.-ft. - an increase of 37 lb.-ft. The engine is paired with a Turbo-specific eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission. As a result, it goes from zero to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds (2.7 seconds for the Cabriolet), which represents a 0.2 second reduction compared to the previous model. The 911 Turbo S Coupe reaches the standing quarter mile mark in 10.5 seconds. Top track speed for both Turbo S models is 205 mph.

HYUNDAI MOTOR UNVEILS ‘PROPHECY’ CONCEPT EV
Hyundai Motor Company unveiled its new concept EV, ‘Prophecy’. The visionary concept clearly expresses Hyundai’s latest design philosophy, Sensuous Sportiness, expanding on the era-defining example set by last year’s “45”concept EV that stripped away complexity in favor of clean lines and minimalistic structures.Prophecy follows suit with an iconic silhouette of perfect proportions that have been inspired by an aerodynamic design. Leveraging the extended wheelbase and shorter overhang, Hyundai’s designers have achieved the Ultimate Automotive Form, thanks to a new EV architecture defined by pristine surfaces and pure volume in combination with aesthetic harmony and functionality. The propeller shapes embedded in the vehicle’s wheel not only affirm this trait, they also compel air to be drawn in and flow down the side of the body like water over a stone. The integrated rear spoiler complements this effect by harnessing downforce that aids vehicle stability when travelling at speed.The transparent acrylic material provides a clear view of the functional components inside. This intentional design feature is integrated in the spoiler, headlamp and in the camera monitoring system (CMS), calling attention to the functional beauty of the components.

VOLKSWAGEN INDIA LAUNCHES TIGUAN ALLSPACE AT `33.12 LAKH Staying true to its commitment made early this year that Volkswagen India would launch four SUVs for the Indian market in the next two years, the brand has launched its first, the Tiguan Allspace for the Indian market. The vehicle has been priced at an ex-showroom price of Rs 33.12 lakh. This seven-seater will compete in the Indian market against popular models like the Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavour, the Mahindra Alturas, etc. The seven seater premium vehicle is available with a power-mill of 2.0l TSI BS VI engine mated to a 7-speed DSG 4Motion transmission. Delivering a peak power of 187hp(190ps)@4200 rpm and a torque of 320Nm@1500-4100rpm (as per EU specifications). The Tiguan Allspace has a wheelbase of 2,787 mm. It offers extra knee room for rear passengers and plenty of cargo
space. With all the seven seats occupied, the Tiguan Allspace provides a luggage compartment volume of 340 litres that can be extended up to 1,274 litres with the rear seats folded. The Tiguan Allspace was launched in Mumbai in the presence of Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India. NEW BMW X1 LAUNCHED AT `35.90 LAKH ONWARD BMW India has launched the new updated version of second-generation BMW X1. Locally produced at BMW Group Plant Chennai, the car is available in BS VI diesel and petrol variants at all BMW dealerships across India. The vehicle was unveiled by Rudratej Singh, President and Chief Executive Officer, BMW Group India. The new BMW X1 is available in three variants – the new SportX, xLine and M Sport. INDIA MADE MERCEDES GLC COUPÉ PRICED AT `62.70 LAKH ONWARD Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz India launched the ‘Made in India’ GLC Coupé in two variants, the 300d 4MATIC diesel and GLC 300 4MATIC petrol. With the roll-out of the GLC Coupe, Mercedes-Benz India has now added the 10th global product in its local production portfolio in India. The new MercedesBenz GLC 300 4MATIC petrol is priced at Rs 62.70 lakh, and the GLC 300d 4MATIC is priced at Rs 63.70 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom, India (except Kerala). Martin Schwenk, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India and Piyush Arora, Executive Director, Operations, Mercedes-Benz India rolledout the GLC Coupe from the assembly line in Chakan, Pune. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) unveiled the super luxurious MPV Toyota Vellfire at a function in Hyderabad in South India. The Toyota Vellifre is a luxurious selfcharging hybrid electric vehicle. The vehicle has been priced at Rs 79.50 lakh, ex showroom, pan India, except Kerala.

ow that the Auto Expo-The Motor show 2020 has been done and dusted, let us analyse whether it was a success or a big flop show.
The year 2020 began on a disastrous note for the Indian auto industry. Month after month till the end of 2019, the Indian auto industry witnessed a free fall in sales of their vehicles. This led to production cut and part closure of plants for many auto companies and even retrenchment of workers. You can blame all this to the young generation,

because they prefer their Ubers and Olas for a ride, rather than buying their own vehicles. This was the argument given by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman when the media asked her about the reasons why the Indian auto industry was witnessing fall in sales of vehicles. It was in these circumstances that the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) with the support of Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India and the Confederation of Indian Industry had organised the Auto Expo-The Motor

Show 2020 at Great Noida on the outskirts of New Delhi in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. But then came a double whammy. Even though a lot of prominent Chinese Auto companies either directly or indirectly through collaborations had booked their spaces at the Auto Expo, senior Chinese officials from these companies

had to cancel their visit to India because of the deadly coronavirus fears. This year the show saw several misses. Prominent car names who skipped the Auto Expo this year included Toyota, Audi, BMW, Honda Cars, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford India, Volvo Cars, Citroen, Lexus Nissan and Datsun, among others. Car designer DC
Design who usually brings in a very crazy looking modified vehicle, missed the show. We also missed a few Bollywood stars who are usually attracted to the DC pavilion. Among the two wheeler companies that were absent from the show included Indian Motorcycle, Hero MotoCorp, Royal Enfield, TVS, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India,
Bajaj Auto, Yamaha, KTM and Husqvarna, Kawasaki, HarleyDavidson, Ducati, Triumph, Lohia Auto, Revolt Motors, Ather, Benelli, Motoroyale Kinetic Pvt Ltd with their brands like MV Agusta, Hyosung, Norton, FB Mondial, SWM, among others. That meant more than 90 per cent of two wheeler companies in India did not participate in Auto Expo 2020. But then which were the

two wheeler companies that participated? It was Suzuki Motorcycles India and a whole host of startups and a few existing players in the electric two wheeler market. Generally at an auto expo, you get to see commercial vehicles too. This time, their number was also limited. Force Motors, Mahindra, Tata Motors, SML Isuzu, Olectra, JBM Auto and
a few others showcased their products, but we did not get to see Ashok Leyland, the Daimler and Mercedes trucks and a few others. One should also not forget that the last time we had an expo at Greater Noida, there were so many players and the organisers had to take up the ground floor as well as the first floor to accommodate

Yes, I would say it was a success, because SIAM pulled off a magic in such a terrible situation. At least it got those players, especially the electric ones, to launch their products. organising this show. The show witnessed over 352 product displays from 108 exhibitors. This included 8 global premiers, over 70 launches & unveils. Around 35 electric vehicles were launched and 15 concepts were showcased. Big names from China who participated included Great Wall Motors, Olectra and Haima Automobile.

AUTO EXPO - THE MOTOR SHOW 2020 - CARS FORCE MOTORS Pune based automotive major Force Motors (India’s largest van maker) showcased several passenger car vehicles that included a mammoth sized modified 3 door Gurkha 4x4. This mini monster looked tall because of the raised suspension. Enhancing the looks were LED headlamps, the front bull guard wrapped in black rope, a winch, metal nets to protect the side windows, the luggage rack with the spare tyre on top, etc. The vehicle had huge ORVMs with mammoth tyres that had 17 inches rims. The tyre measure 40 inches in diameter and 13.5 inches in width. The large knobbly tyres are ideal for hardcore off-roading. At the rear, the machine looked even more handsome with the two jerry cans enclosed in metal wraps. There is a small ladder too, to get to the storage space on the top. The tail lamps come with their own protection. There is a pick axe for your adventures too. With auxiliary lights, a modified and raised suspension with differential axles, this Gurkha monster stood out in the crowd. The Gurkha from Force Motors has been traditionally a blue blooded off-roader and the 2020 version continues with that legacy. The company unveiled the 2020 3-door Force Gurkha. The Gurkha will now only have 2.6 litre diesel engine which now gets a BS VI certification. With this engine there are two output options, a 90hp, 250 Nm torque and another 114 hp, 350Nm torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed gear box. The Gurkha will come only in one variant and it will only be fitted with the 90 hp engine. The 114 hp engine is fitted in the new Trax Cruiser passenger carrier. There have been subtle changes in the new version. The front gets a new grille, new LED headlamps and as one moves to the rear you get to see a new bumper and a redesigned tail lamp. The vehicle now comes with a touchscreen infotainment system and a multi information display near the speedometer. The vehicle also gets dual airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors.

GREAT WALL MOTORS Great Wall Motors, China’s largest SUV manufacturer, globally premiered its Haval Concept H Plug-in Hybrid Electric SUV and had the India debut of the its pure electric SUV– Concept Vision 2025. GWM had on display models like the Haval H9, Haval F7, Haval F7x, Haval F5 and the GWM electric vehicles iQ & R1. They also showcased their Lithium Ion Battery, Haval Intelligent Home, Haval Intelligent Safety Display, and Great Wall Autonomous EV. GWM plans to invest an estimated 1 billion USD (Rs 7000 cr approx.) in India in a phased manner. They have bought the Talegaon plant of General Motors near Pune in the state of Maharashtra for their manufacturing of cars. The acquisition will be completed in the second half of 2020.

Haima has neither set the specific deadline for the launch of these two passenger vehicles nor closed in on any price points for the models specific to Indian market. The company said as part of the announcement that it is currently studying the auto market in India and would soon firm up its future plans for Indian market. While Haima 8S is a 5-seater SUV supported by a 1.6-litre T-GDI engine, Haima 7X is a 7-seater MPV featuring the same enginegearbox combination as that of the 8S SUV. Haima 7X MPV, is the first right-hand-drive model of Haima Auto . At present, Haima Automobile and Bird Electric of India have reached an initial cooperation intention in the field of new energy vehicles.
BIRD ELECTRIC Bird Electric - a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bird Group, an Indian business group along with Haima Automobile of China showcased the Bird Electric EV1. The hatch-back will be available in the range of Rs. 10 lakh on Indian roads. The battery-powered vehicle, likely to be manufactured at soon-to-be-set-up plant in Manesar (Haryana), would be introduced in two variants with driving range of 200 km and 300 km per charge, respectively. The first lot of Bird Electric EV1 would take at least 12-15 months for the roll-out. Bird Electric EV1 is fitted with high-energy lithium battery and electronic control system and has a torque of 95Nm/150Nm. The electric car will have a top speed of 120 km/h with the power consumption merely at Rs 60 per 100km. Bird Electric EV1 has the largest boot capacity of its category in five-seater configuration.

With a sleek rear surface and a striking fascia, the 2020 Tucson has new penta-projector LED headlamps and LED tail lamps, cascade design bold front grille. It has flared wheel arches, twin-tip exhaust and panoramic sunroof. The interiors are luxurious and comfortable with premium black colour theme and leather touch on the dashboard. The car is powered by a 2.0 litre diesel and petrol engines. The diesel engine is mated to a new 8 Speed automatic transmission giving best-in-segment power of 185PS and best-in-segment torque of around 400Nm. Further, the petrol engine delivers 152 ps power and around 192 Nm torque. The company also unveiled a new Creta. The new Creta is a 2nd generation SUV. The front of the new Creta SUV is characterised by the 3 dimensional cascading grille with muscle like vertical and horizontal patterns and sculpted bumper with skid plates. Flared wheel arches coupled with thoughtfully crafted crease lines on the bonnet add to the imposing stance of the new Creta. The SUV has uniquely separated boomerang shaped LED DRLs along with LED head lamps, fog lamps, LED tail lamps and LED high mount stop lamps and the rear bumper comes with skid plates. MARUTI SUZUKI Maruti Suzuki began the show by unveiling the Concept Futuro-e as part of Mission Green Million. Concept Futuro-e is a futuristic, dynamic and stylish coupé SUV concept. Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced an aggressive plan to sell one million green cars over the next few years under its ‘Mission Green Million’. Concept Futuro-e is defined by its distinctive SUV-coupé silhouette and balanced proportions. The crisp geometric surfaces lend a bold yet stylish presence to Concept Futuro-e.
The company also transformed the Ignis hatchback into one that exudes an SUV design. The Ignis now gets a new front grille with U-shaped motif and bold skid plate detailing on bumpers. LED projector headlamps coupled with stylish DRLs further accentuates the style quotient of the new Ignis.

The A-Class Limousine will play a key role in further strengthening Mercedes-Benz’s strong sedan portfolio and will be one of the key products to be introduced in India in 2020. Mercedes-Benz also unveiled the sporty and stylish luxury SUV the new GLA, which had its world premiere in December 2019. Also showcased was the all-new generation GLE ‘hip-hop’. It is packed with all manner of cutting-edge active driving assistance and the state-of-the-art MBUX user experience multimedia system. It comes equipped with touch and AI-based voice control, which offers an unrivalled urban and off-road SUV experience. It also showcased the recently unveiled EQC Edition 1886. The V-Class Marco Polo is one of a kind vehicle, eminently suitable for long journeys, and also for day-to-day and urban motoring. Renault Triber, the less than 4 metre car has stood out as being a super-spacious, ultramodular, affordable, fuel-efficient vehicle with attractive interiors which boasts of many modern and practical features. . Renault Triber Easy-R AMT comes fitted with the Energy engine - a 1.0-litre petrol engine, offering a balance between performance and fuel economy, with low total cost of maintenance.
TATA MOTORS Tata Motors showcased an all-new range of passenger and electric vehicles with a focus on connected, electric, shared and safe at the show. Two concepts based on the ALFA ARC, ‘Agile Light Flexible Advanced’ Architecture, were unveiled. One was the HBX Showcar as a natural extension of the H2X Concept - readying for production. The other was the Sierra EV Concept, a fully electric vehicle that goes beyond a SUV. Tata Motors also unveiled the Hexa Safari Edition –combination of two of SUVs – the Safari and the Hexa. Derived from the Land Rover’s legendary D8 platform, and customised as ‘Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced’ Architecture (OMEGA-ARC) for India, Tata Motors launched the Harrier 2020, which comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission, mated to the next-generation 170PS BSVI Kryotec diesel engine. The feature-loaded SUV comes with a host of new features like panoramic sunroof, powered driver seat, amongst others. The Harrier 2020 is priced at Rs 13.69 lakh for the manual version and Rs 16.25 lakh for the automatic version (price, all India). Tata Motors also showcased its new flagship SUV –the Gravitas, in its production spec, scheduled to be launched later in H1FY21. The company also showcased the single largest portfolio of EVs in India, with the newly-launched Nexon EV and the Altroz EV.

AUTO EXPO - THE MOTOR SHOW 2020 - CARS VOLKSWAGEN Volkswagen showcased its biggest SUV offensive, which comprised of the Volkswagen Taigun, T-Roc, Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace. The company has commenced pre-bookings of the Tiguan Allspace and T-Roc in India. Under Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 project, the Taigun is the first product built on the MQB A0 IN platform. The SUV will be powered by Volkswagen’s TSI technology combined with the brand’s globally acclaimed DSG gear box. The Taigun has a dominant front making it look bolder, muscular in turn giving it a sporty SUV stance. The interiors are plush with leatherette seats and a digital instrument cluster. It’s contemporary in its design. The rear of the car has a new design element, it is illuminated with a LED strip that is bordered by a glossy black trim. It runs across the whole width of the car and integrates in to Volkswagen’s LED signature tail lamps on either side. The Taigun is equipped with safety features such as
6- airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) among others. The Volkswagen T-Roc has a progressive design language, with a coupé-style roof, distinctively wide front end and concise proportions. The integrated LED headlights and unique LED daytime running lights creates an unmistakable look, especially when driven at night. The dual tone roof top enhances the sporty look, as it matches perfectly with the eclectic body color. The carline will be introduced with a TSI petrol engine mated to Volkswagen’s 7-speed DSG gear box. Further, it will consist of all the standard equipment that’s part of the brand’s global SUV portfolio – panoramic sun roof, 6-airbags, ABS, ESC and infotainment solutions for Apple and Android users. The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is a 7-seater carline with a generous passenger compartment. The carline has a large boot space that fits

EEVE INDIA EeVe India unveiled two of its two-wheelers, Tesero and Forseti, at the show. EeVe India, an electric two-wheeler manufacturing start-up, has designed Tesero, an e-bike, and Forseti, a retro e-scooter, equipped with super-advanced features and high-end technology. The products are scheduled to hit the Indian markets by June 2020. The company displayed a range of electric scooters such as Xeniaa, 4U, Wind and Your at the show.
Bird Electric of India announced its association with California-based EV company Bird Rides Inc to introduce its flagship Bird Cruiser, a twowheel ergonomically designed electric vehicle, targeting B2B segment in India.
DEVOT MOTORS Another relatively unknown company in the motoring world Devot Motors founded in 2019 and based in Jodhpur in the northern state of Rajasthan, unveiled an EV motorcycle prototype at the show. The company claims that it has experience from an Indian and British design technology and automotive industry. The founders KD Panwar and VD Panwar are motorcycle enthusiasts. While the former is from the automotive industry, the latter is from the IT and design industry, currently based out of the UK. They have one of the world’s biggest solar energy plants in Jodhpur. The Devot Motors Electric Motorcycle Design has been copyrighted. The bike has a top speed of 100 kmph and a range of up to 200 km on a single charge. It has a keyless on and off function. This bike can be charged through an on-board charger for home socket. There is also energy regeneration on braking.
EVERVE MOTORS Pune-based Everve Motors unveiled its maiden luxury e-scooter EF1. The e-scooter will come with a premium quality battery with a lifespan of 3-5 years. With a top speed of 90 km/hour, this e-scooter will provide the rider with a speed range of up to 110 km/hour. The e-scooter has a motor of 3.3 KW and 5 KW and weighs 260kg (GVW). It has a payload of 150kg. The e-scooter can be charged through a 5 amp plug at home or office. There will be dual batteries in the vehicle, each weighing 12 kgs. The life span of each battery is around five years. The lithium ion batteries can be charged in 5 hours and through fast charging the same can be done in 1.5 hours. The company claims the e-scooter will have a top speed of up to 110 kmph which will be limited to 90 kmph. The scooter can accelerate from 0-60kmph speed in around 8.73 seconds. The vehicle will come with ABS with racing grade brakes. The e-scooter will be launched in the last quarter of 2020.

EVOLET Evolet, an electric two-wheeler manufacturing company established as recent as 2019 and headquartered in Gurugram in Haryana near New Delhi in North India unveiled a slew of electric products. The company is headed by Squadron Leader Prerana Chaturvedi who is the CEO & ED of Evolet. Evolet is basically the electric arm of Rissala Electric Motors. The company has its own unit in Bilaspur in Chattisgarh with a 100,000 sq.ft assembly floor to roll out ‘Make in India’ products. Popular Singer Daler Mehndi visited the Evolet stall at the expo. The products unveiled at the expo included a scooter, bike and an ATV, all of these electric and they are expected to be launched by June this year. The company unveiled the Hawk electric motorcycle and the Warrior electric ATV . Also on display were the Polo, Pony and Derby electric scooters, and ‘Dhanno’, a moped. The Hawk is a fully-faired electric motorcycle more on the lines of a sports bike. It has telescopic fork at the front and a monoshock unit at the rear for its suspension. The front wheel gets twin discs while there is a single rotor at the back. Top speed is billed as 120 kmph and the bike does 150 km on a single charge. The company says that the battery can be charged fully in 3-4 hours. Power comes from a 3 kW motor backed up by a 72 V/40 Ah lithiumion battery. The company also showcased the Raptor electric scooter. It is powered by a 3000w motor and has a 72V 40 Ah lithium-ion battery. The range on a single charge is expected to be 100-250 kms with a top speed of 120 kmph The charging here also takes around 3-4 hours. The Raptor will have features like mobile charging ports, USB ports, etc. A very unique product was the Warrior electric ATV and the first of its kind in the country. It comes with a host of accessories and this one travels 50 km on a single charge and can achieve a top speed of 60 kmph. The Dhanno e-moped is targeted for the rural areas of the country. The lithium-ion battery powers a Brushless 2000w motor with a 72V 26Ah battery that can travel about 80 km. This is a true load carrier can take a load of 450 kgs which makes it a perfect rural king.

The electric motorcycle AE-47 unveiled by the homegrown electric automaker is powered by a 4000W motor that promises a top speed of 85kmph. The electric motorcycle is equipped with a 48V/3.5 kWh lightweight portable lithium-ion battery. With a charging time of 4 hours it produces a range of 85 Km/per charge in Power mode, 160 km/per charge in Eco mode and accelerates from 0-60 kmph in 9 seconds. The electric bike features advanced combi braking system with Front disc of 290 mm & Rear disc of 215mm. It has a Rear Monoshock Suspension along with Cruise Control feature. It also features a digital instrument cluster, keyless access, mobile charger, walk assist and reverse feature. The motorcycle is supported by a mobile app featuring GPS, GPRS, Realtime tracking and Geofencing. In the high-speed segment, Hero Electric unveiled a new electric scooter AE-29 with a top speed of 55 km/hr. With a charging time of 4 hours the new scooter produces a range of 80 km/ch. It is equipped with a 1000W motor and 48V/3.5 kWh Li-ion battery. The first IOT enabled electric scooter features Bluetooth connectivity, anti-theft smart lock, mobile charger, mobile app, digital instrument cluster, walk assist and reverse facility. With its primary application in the B2B segment, Hero Electric Trike AE-3, an attractive innovation made its debut at this motor show. A first-of-its kind vehicle, the trike is equipped with a self-standing Gyroscopic stability feature with Auto balance park switch. It can produce a range of 100 km/ch and delivers a speed of 80 km/hr in a full charge of 5 hours. Powered by 5500W motor it is equipped with Li 48V/4kWh battery. The vehicle also features digital instrument cluster, mobile charger, walk assist, reverse assist at 26 km/ph, mobile app, GPS, GPRS, real-time tracking and geofencing. In the high-speed segment, the company also showcased an electric scooter AE-75 in a partnership with Sahara Evols with a top speed of 45 km/hr and range of 80 km/ch. HERO CYCLES Hero Cycles, a leading global cycle manufacturer, showcased three new electric bicycles at the show. Essentia Connect pedal e-bike which is basically not a geared biked, has a max speed of 25 kmph and has a 36V / 250W rear hub motor. The e-bicycle comes with Bluetooth connectivity which via an app will disclose a lot of information about the e-cycle on your mobile phone like the speed of the bike, the distance travelled, distance for charging, etc . On a single charge this e-cycle with the help of throttle can go about 25 to 30km. It has a lithium ion integrated ip67 battery. The charging time for the battery is around 3 to 3.5 hours. Interesting features of the bike include alloy frame, internal cable routing, single speed system and front disc brakes. The Straphanger on the other hand comes with smart e-modes. In the throttle mode you have the twist and go mode where you can cycle without pedaling, then you have the Pedalec mode where there is a balance of battery assist and pedaling. The rider’s pedaling efforts are reduced by 80 per cent in this mode. Then of course you have the conventional pedal mode where you ride the bike the classic way, i.e. by simply pedaling. The Straphanger has a top speed of 25kmph and its battery takes 5 hours to charge. On a single charge on can travel a distance of 60 kms. It runs on advanced waterproof IP67 battery. Other features include an electric drive unit and smart controller. The external 11.6Ah batteries are detachable too. This e-bicycle is built on alloy 6061 frame, has antiskid alloy pedal, a front light and maintenance free internal cabling. To make one’s journey comfortable, this cycle comes with adjustable front suspension, dual disc brakes, alloy chain wheel, power switch on top tube, lcd display, The Easy Step Folding Bike can be folded with great ease. It’s built on an alloy frame, can be folded and has a 7-speed gear. The bike has an inbuilt battery and LED display on handle bar and the bike is throttle assisted. This e cycle can achieve a top speed of 25km\h and has a max power of 250watts. On a single charge this can do around 35 to 40km and the charging time typically is around 4 hours to 4.5 hours.

AUTO EXPO - THE MOTOR SHOW 2020 - TWO-WHEELERS NAHAK Nahak, a relatively unknown name in the motoring world, showcased two electric sports bikes P 14 and RP 46. The Nahak Group was established in the year 1992 and is primarily engaged in manufacturing of all types of electric fans in Kolkata. The group also entered into the manufacturing of electric vehicles with products like E-Rickshaw, E-Rickshaw Loader and battery operated vehicles in Delhi in 2014. The group has a manufacturing unit of E-vehicles in the name of Sauryaa Sharyo Corporation. Their super sports electric bikes did attract a lot of people at the expo. The bikes are powered by lithium ion batteries of. 2.4 kwh and have a range of 150-180 kms on a single charge. Top speed is around 120 km/h. The charging time of the batteries is around 5 hours, though through fast charging the battery can be charged in 40 minutes. Both of these motorcycles have 3 riding modes and a reverse mode as well with a lot of hi tech features.
OKINAWA SCOOTERS Okinawa Scooters unveiled the prototype maxielectric scooter- Cruiser. The Cruiser is the first of its kind in the electric scooter range in India. It features a 4 KWH Lithium-ion, detachable battery. The scooter comes with a high-speed charger that offers a charging time of 2-3 hrs, which is one of its unique features. The scooter achieves a top speed of 100 kmph and is capable of running for over 120 kms on a single charge. The company also showcased the PraisePro and Ridge+ electric scooters.
PIAGGIO GROUP Piaggio India unveiled premium scooter Aprilia SXR 160 with a “Crossmax Design”. It will be manufactured at Piaggio’s Baramati factory and is slated for commercial launch in Q3, 2020. Piaggio also showcased the European version of the Vespa Elettrica which is inspiring its approach towards electric mobility solutions to be designed for India, and to be made in India. The all new Aprilia SXR 160 will come in all new 160cc BS6 & 125cc BS6 options with 3V Tech FI Engine technology. These will be complemented by a host of modern features. In addition to these, Piaggio also had on display • The Limited-Edition Vespa Racing Sixties • Vespa 2020 Facelifts – Vespa RED, Vespa SXL/ VXL Facelift • Aprilia SR 160 and Aprilia Storm 125 with disc brakes These are all expected to be launched in Q2, 2020. Interesting global product propositions such as Moto Guzzi V85 TT and RSV4 1100 Factory were also on display at the Piaggio Pavilion.

It launched the BS6 editions of the all new Access 125, Gixxer series, Burgman Street and Intruder. The company displayed its product portfolio including the entire range of scooters and motorcycles, along with BS6 compliant V-Storm 650 XT 2020 edition. SMIPL also displayed the Katana and Team Suzuki Ecstar Moto GP machine, GSX-RR for biking enthusiasts. In addition, new colour concept models of Suzuki Gixxer 250 and Burgman Street were showcased at the SMIPL Pavilion this year to reinforce Suzuki`s racing DNA.SMIPL will evaluate on launching the Suzuki Gixxer 250 and Burgman Street in MotoGP colour, basis the customer’s feedback at the Auto Expo 2020. Suzuki Motorcycle India is exhibiting 23 products including the Gixxer Cup bikes. These Gixxer SF 250 race units from Gixxer Cup 2019 edition will be available at the pavilion as a part of virtual reality station, where the visitors will get to enjoy the immersive virtual racing entertainment and experience the thrill of the ride at a racetrack.

Code named the T1N, this new platform has been simultaneously designed and developed for both Internal Combustion Engines and 100% Electric Drive. Both the Diesel and the 100% electric variant were on display. A 51-seater (first of its kind) and the school bus variant of the 33-seater Traveller Monobus range were also on display. Then there was a people mover variant of the Trax that goes by the name of Cruiser and its cargo variant – Kargoking. Also, on display was the Traveller Smartcitibus operated by B.E.S.T. The company also displayed the range of engines produced for leading car majors like Mercedes, BMW and Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

JBM AUTO JBM Auto Ltd, a commercial vehicle player in India, launched Eco-Life e9 electric bus. Eco-Life, a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV), saves around 1000 equivalent tons of carbon dioxide and 350,000 litres of diesel over 10 years of operation. Eco-Life, powered by fast charging lithium batteries, can run 125-150 kms in a single charge, depending on the city’s traffic conditions. Eco-Life comes with lithium batteries that are chargeable through a fast plug-in charging system. Offering a completely flexible solution, the electric bus technology is adaptable to the city bus operation depending on demographic and geographic conditions. Eco-Life has a corrosion resistant ladder frame structure to ensure maximum strength and minimum weight, matching global standards for safety in case of front/side collision and rollover accidents. But all the commercial vehicles on display we powered by new BS6 engines. The vehicles included the Cruzio range of buses and the BlazoX trucks. Mahindra also showcased two variants of the Treo, the pioneering Lithium-ion battery electric 3-wheeler. There was also a display of a first-of-its-kind future electric vehicle architecture MESMA 350 (Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Architecture), electric batteries and charging station to drive a connected experience for the consumer. Mahindra has displayed mStallion, its range of advanced BSVI ready turbo gasoline direct injection, TGDi engines which will deliver a great ‘fun to drive’ experience to its customers. The company also showcased its new division CERO (Mahindra MSTC Recycling Pvt. Ltd.), India’s first organised vehicle recycler. CERO stands for a world of zero waste and zero pollution through automobile recycling and reuse.

The company unveiled the allnew Winger, the new Tata Prima 5530.S Facelift, the flagship of Tata Motors’ extensive commercial vehicle line-up, Tata 4/12m Low Floor Entry Electric Bus– the first full-electric drivetrain and the Tata Ultra T.7 Electric, India’s first-ever intermediate commercial electric truck, among others. The company displayed 14 allnew BSVI range of products across segments covering sub 1 ton to 55 ton GVW, with 140+ type approvals and 19 engines (including alternate fuels options), thus providing a vast array of product offerings to its customers.
TATA WINGER Tata Motors unveiled the all-new Winger at the Auto Expo. The
Winger was launched several years ago in the passenger vehicle segment but had failed to find a market here. Now the Winger comes in its commercial passenger avatar. The all-new Tata Winger has a bold and imposing front face and LED tail lamps. Step inside the new Winger and you get to see a carlike cockpit and comfortable seats for passengers embellished with features like individual AC vents and seats with horizontal slide for better shoulder width. The all-new Tata Winger is a monocoque vehicle.

The 12-metre C9 can travel up to 300 Kms in a single charge with an advanced li-ion phosphate battery that can be charged within 2-3 hours. OMEGA SEIKI Omega Seiki Private Limited launched India’s first smart electric cargo 3-wheelers- Singha and Singha Max with the loading capacity of 500 Kg. The vehicles Singha and Singha Max are priced at Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 3.6 lakh respectively. Both the Singha and Singha Max have a contemporary style cabin and cargo box. The vehicles have been designed in order to maximise safety and also productivity by reducing operator fatigue. The ergonomic car seat design reduces driver discomfort.

The buses are wide and provide ample space for a safe and comfortable commute. The buses are designed for tourist, staff and school applications.

une bashing is fun as long as you have a dependable vehicle and an equally dependable driver who knows how to wade through sand using the right gears and techniques. We had with us a dependable vehicle, the new Ford Endeavour 4x4 which now comes with a brand new 2 litre EcoBlue diesel engine. Also in place was the world’s first 10-speed automatic transmission. In this review report I shall be primarily writing about the new Ford Endeavour powertrain that we got to test on the shifting sands of Sam Sand Dunes in Jaisalmer in the north Indian state of Rajasthan. Of the 10 new Ford Endeavour SUVs that went on a long dune bashing exercise, a few of them got beached on the sand. So did that mean that the mammoth machines had some short coming in their 4x4 prowess? The lesson I learnt from other people’s mistakes was that you can beach the best of vehicles if you have the word ‘CLUMSY’ written all over your face. It was all about understanding the vehicle and applying the right moves. So let me start telling you the story of the new Ford Endeavour and its new powertrain. The new 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine is Bharat Stage VI compliant and is more fuel-efficient than the outgoing 2.2L TDCi engine and has reduced emissions. The EcoBlue engine delivers approximately 168hp of peak power and 420 Nm peak torque. The EcoBlue engine with 4X2 driveline will return 13.90 kmpl while 4X4 variant delivers 12.4 Kmpl, a 14% improvement in fuel efficiency. With a simplified variant lineup, the 2020 Ford Endeavour is available in three-trims – 2.0L Titanium 4X2 AT, 2.0L Titanium+ 4X2 Automatic and 2.0L Titanium+ 4X4 Automatic. We were driving the 4x4 variant.
Ford India has introduced the 2020 Endeavour at an introductory price starting at Rs 29.55 lakh. The introductory prices of 2020 Endeavour will only be valid till April 30, 2020, post which the ex-showroom prices will see an upward revision of Rs 70,000. All customers who book their cars until April 30 will benefit from this offer. The EcoBlue engine also offers a 20 per cent improvement in low-end torque from the outgoing 2.2L TDCi engine. This new Ford EcoBlue engine is also more refined and quieter with a 4-decibel reduction in idle noise. The Ford EcoBlue engine’s all-new design features multiple innovations that reduce friction, contributing to an improvement in fuel efficiency. The new engine uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid commonly referred to as AdBlue.

Automatically injected into the vehicle’s exhaust system, this fluid will help reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Coming to the 10-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift, this was a piece of beauty. I found it very responsive and the best part was that its architecture reduces the gaps in available power and acceleration between gears

providing smoother acceleration response. Let me explain that more lucidly for you. On a smooth tarmac, when you moderately accelerate, you can see the transmission skip gears and move from 1 to 3 or from 3 to 5 gears. This is a smart way to get to a higher gear by staying at peak rpm range. It thus helps in the driving performance. Similarly when you are driving at a certain speed and when you brake, the transmission again skips gears and moves for example
from 3 to 1. At cruising speed, when your vehicle is moving at a high gear, for example in the tenth gear and you apply heavy acceleration in order to overtake a vehicle in front, the transmission may step down multiple times from 10 to 6 or 8 to 3 and this helps the vehicle to accelerate faster.

psi levels in order to get more traction on sand. The next step was to rotate the knob for Terrain Management System (TMS) on the floor console to the sand mode. There are four preset modes here: Normal, Snow/ Mud/Grass, Sand and Rock. When we shifted into sand mode for our drive, the vehicle was a different monster all together. The engine response gets better in the sand mode as compared to for example the Snow mode. You can check this out when you are driving on a normal road and you shift the TMS from Normal to Snow. The vehicle gets very
sluggish. This is to ensure that too much wheel spin is avoided on this sort of terrain. A couple of points to be noted while dune bashing is that you are not supposed to let go of the accelerator as you climb up a dune. Also, since this new transmission allows Progressive Range Select or SelectShift, you can set the range too. We selected 3 range and this meant the gear will always be in the range of 1 to 3, not more. That controls too much of speed and in turn avoids wheel spins. We realised that this innovative

feature that gives drivers the ability to lock gears in the desired range, delivers an engaging and more controlled drive experience – especially in challenging driving situations such as slippery roads or steep off-roading conditions, or even on sand. So what happens when you take your foot off the accelerator for a wee second on your way up on a dune and the vehicle gets stalled? There was no need to panic and accelerate like a man possessed by a devil. That would only allow the vehicle to

get beached as the wheels would begin spinning wildly resulting in digging into the sand more deeply. I saw a few people do that, much to their frustration. All one has to do is to engage the 4x4L or Low mode, select the range select to 3, and engage the Reverse mode and tap the accelerator. I did that to experience such a situation and I pulled myself out of the sand and the vehicle slid back. Once I was at the bottom of the dune, I disengaged the 4x4L and accelerated all the way up and descended to the track below. Thus dune after dune, the story continued and not once did I beach the vehicle. It was a challenging course, but the few hours we spent dune bashing, we realised that the new Ford Endeavour 4x4 was a monster with some very great off roading skills. The suspension of the new Ford Endeavour too seems to have been tweaked as I found the vehicle containing its body roll on the rough, while providing ample comfort on the roads.

While the new engine and transmission proved that the new 2020 Ford Endeavour is a very capable off roading machine, it also comes with several creature comforts that typically remain the icing on the Ford cake.

2020 MARUTI SUZUKI VITARA BREZZA

aruti Suzuki all-new Vitara Brezza was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2020 and it took us a while before we got our hands on it. We finally did so in the sun kissed beach land of Goa. Unlike the Ignis that had undergone just a beefy transformation, the new Vitara Brezza ot a new heart. Out went the 1.3 litre multijet diesel engine and in came the 1.5 litre K-series BS VI petrol engine. Maruti Suzuki has already made its intention with diesel engine. It is a big NO for them now. They want to go the petrol and hybrid way.
Prices for the new Vitara Brezza start at Rs 7.34 lakh for the base variant and goes up to Rs 11.40 lakh for the top model. Trim levels begin from LXI and goes up to VXI, ZXI and ZXI+. As always, we got the top model for a drive and we got to experience this new engine with both a 5 speed manual transmission as well as a 4-speed Automatic transmission. For a vehicle that has sold more than 500,000 units since its launch, all of them in diesel, shifting to an only petrol engine is something of a strategy for the company, or so it seems.
The all-new Vitara Brezza will now be available in three new dual tone color options - Sizzling Red with midnight Black roof, Torque Blue with midnight Black roof and Granite Grey with Autumn Orange roof.
EXTERIORS The exterior shape and size are untouched in the new Vitara Brezza. But it is got some tweaks here and there to make it look a bit more sporty and muscular. mm. It has a turning radius of 5.2 m and a kerb weight of 1110-1130 kg. The vehicle gets LED projector headlamps with integrated Dual function LED DRLs and LED fog lamps. It comes with a bold Front Grille that gives it a very sporty look. There are distinct LED tail lights too. The vehicle stands tall on precision cut 16 inches alloy wheels. The tyre size is 215/60 R16. The top end variants get roof rail in gun metal grey, while VXI gets it in black and LXI does not get one. Continuing with its floating roof design, the vehicle also has a roof end spoiler, LED high mounted stop lamp, body coloured ORVMs, electric fold or auto fold ORVMs for ZXI+ and others except for LXI which gets manual fold. These ORVMs can be electrically adjusted from inside. The car also has auto rain sensing wipers.
INTERIORS Once you step into the car, you get to see a premium dashboard with leather wrapped steering wheel, sliding front arm rest, relatively wide cabin space and a new age smart play studio. The 7 inches touch screen smart play studio system is available only for ZXI and ZXI+. One can also have access to a few remote control functions through a smart play app. Then there are steering mounted controls for Bluetooth calling and cruise control on one side while the other has voice command and steering

mounted audio controls. You get electronic power steering in the Brezza and it comes with a tilt feature but is not telescopic. For the MT version, there are gear shoft indicators on the screen in front of the driver. The front centre armrest is only for ZXI+ and this model is the only gets inside rear view mirror with auto day night. The rest get a manual one. The ZXI+ gets shoulder height adjustable front seat belts, rain sensing auto wipers, height adjustable driver seat (this is for ZXI also). As for the rear passengers, there is ample shoulder and headroom with 60:40 split rear seats with flip foldable functionality. The boot space is impressive. All door trims come with 1000ml bottle holders. There is an accessory socket in luggage room
DRIVE AND PERFORMANCE Like I mentioned earlier, the 1.5 litre petrol engine comes with either a 5 speed manual transmission of a four-speed automatic transmission. As I took turns driving the MT and the automatic transmission ones, I noticed that the engine had adequate power and torque, but there was a big difference between the MT and the automatic in terms or performance. While the manual gear was smartly sorted out in terms of power delivery and one could downshift for the extra burst of power, the automatic I felt was a bit sluggish. Moreover, a four-speed is too short a range for a compact

SUV like the Brezza. The automatic was not just punchy as I wanted it to be. While in city driving is good with the AT, on highways I felt it was bit sluggish when it came to overtaking and any other situation which required sudden burst of power. Maruti calls the automatic an advanced automatic transmission. Other convenient features include idle start stop, brake energy regeneration and

torque assist. It incorporates what is known as a Smart hybrid technology. The base variant of the Brezza comes with only a 5 speed MT while the AT comes with VXI, ZXI and ZXI+. The Hill Hold feature is only there for AT version. The Vitara Brezza continues with its dual airbags and ABS with EBD or electronic brakeforce distribution. The new 2020 Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is definitely a ‘Heart’y relief for a lot of customers.

kinawa, the makers of Praise and Ridge electric scooters came into our world out of nowhere and became a significant player in the electric two wheeler segment. After some initial hiccups, the company made inroads into the electric vehicle space. They have now launched the Lite electric scooter that scores big on the looks front. The moment I set my eyes upon the Lite electric scooter, I knew they had a winner in hands. Among the several electric scooters available in the country today, this one stands out as an extreme good looker. But how is it as an overall package? For that I had to take a closer look at the vehicle and get to know as much as possible about it. These are my first impressions. From the looks of it, this one is the ideal “Gully Boy”. It’s an electric two wheeler to complete all your short distance chores, like dropping your kid to the nearby school, buying your grocery, getting into a congested marketplace to buy your home stuff, etc. Since it claims to have a top speed of 25kmph, though it did move beyond 30kmph when even two people were sitting on it, this e-scooter does not require a license to ride, no registration and it is not mandatory to wear a helmet while riding this. But we do recommend that you wear a helmet if you are taking it on the streets for a ride.
EXTERIORS The Lite looks impressive and is definitely a crowd puller. “Cute” is the first word that comes to your

mind when you see this e-scooter for the first time. The front looks neat and stylish with its LED projector lamp and DRLs while at the rear we have LED with defogger lights. The speedometer looks modern but the dark tinge to it makes it a bit difficult to read the digital figures during the day. It has stylish aluminium alloy wheels with disc brakes in front and drum at the rear. The e-scooter comes with tubeless tyres. With a length of 1790mm, width of 710mm and a height of 1190 mm, this vehicle can pull two people with a total loading capacity of 150kgs. The seat height is 740mm. The floor mat has a hard mat design which looks good. The vehicle is powered by a 1.25KwH lithiumion battery which is detachable with an anti-theft mechanism. You cannot take out the battery unless you slot the key in and twist it to release the battery.

The Lite has a 250 watt BLDC motor which is waterproof. The vehicle runs on 48V. The e-scooter can achieve a top speed of 25kmph and its battery has a range of 60km per charge in ideal conditions. The battery takes around 4 to 5 hours to be fully charged. Since the batteries are detachable, one can take it out and charge it at your convenience. It can also be charged the conventional way where you plug the e-scooter directly to the wall socket through the charger. The charger comes with a round pin plug of 10 amps. The boot area has storage of 17 litres. To take out the battery, one needs to long press the key fob on the open sign button. The seat pops open and you can dig in and take out the battery smartly with the key. But when you have to fix the battery back after charging, you need use the key manually, because without the battery the remote key is useless. There is a key slot tucked away at the bottom of the scooter which you need to click in order to open the seat. The e-scooter comes with an electronic assisted braking system with regenerative braking. It has telescopic suspension in front and dual tube spring type hydraulic shockers at the back. The e-scooter has push type pillion foot rest and this functions with great ease, provided you are gentle with it while closing it. If you push back the foot rest with great speed, it simply comes back. A gentle movement ensures that the foot rest is folded and back in its original position. The e-scooter has a tucked away hook in front where you can hook on your shopping bags. It also comes with a USB slot where you can charge your mobile phone. Interestingly, you also have a cavity where you can store your mobile phone while it is being charged. The mobile charger comes with auto cut. Other features provided in the e-scooter include auto handle lock and hazard function.

Since this e-scooter goes by the name “Lite”, I found its build very light. It is kind of flimsy and plastic all around, though it’s quite stylish. One thing I found very annoying were the side mirrors. Since they are fitted with the help of two nuts which are tightened in two different directions, it was simply coming off lose. So my advice is that you always travel with two relevant pairs of spanners or pliers or else you can find the mirrors swinging away irritatingly.
RIDE AND PERFORMANCE Okay, here is where the fun begins. The moment you unlock the e-scooter with the help of the remote key, you need

to keep the key in your pocket and press the start button. This is very much like a modern car. The digital speedometer lights up and all you need to do is to use the throttle to push your way through the gully. It does not begin its journey like a
rocket, but yes, it has a sedate start and picks up speed depending upon the load and the incline of the road. The Okinawa Lite is obviously not meant for the highways, but is best for short distances. This is an ideal vehicle to run in campuses and gated institutions and even for those small errands one has to deal with every now and then. At a price of around Rs 60,000 it is kind of affordable. But then, it is a practical electric scooter. I would call it a handsome gully boy! The Lite comes with a 3 years warranty or 30,000 kms whichever comes first. This essentially covers the lithium-ion battery.

New Actros truck from Daimler is aerodynamically superior
The fuel consumption of the Actros has been steadily reduced over the past decades. In typical long-distance transport operations, for example, savings of up to 15 percent have been achieved between 2011 and the introduction of the new Actros from 2019. The new Actros is even more economical than its predecessor on motorways by up to as much as three percent and in inter-city traffic by up to five percent. In addition to the optimised Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) cruise control and transmission control system, new rear axle ratios and aerodynamic improvements to the truck’s cab make a major contribution to this reduction in consumption. The great importance of
aerodynamics can be illustrated by a number: in a modern cabover-engine truck in European long-distance operations, around one third of the available mechanical energy is needed to overcome the air resistance. And this is also reflected in the new Actros: the MirrorCam alone, which replaces the traditional rear-view mirrors, contributes as much as 1.5 percent to the overall fuel savings of the new Actros. New concave cab side deflectors on the cab also make a contribution towards lowering the consumption.

These improvements are due not least to intensive testing in the wind tunnel at Daimler AG’s Untertürkheim plant. There, the engineers simulated the flow conditions around the truck with the aim of
