O
ctober 2015 was a month of great action. But all that was overshadowed by the news that came in just as we were going to the press. Brijmohan Lall Munjal of Hero Group, the doyen of the Indian automotive industry, passed away. We pulled out two pages from our issue to dedicate them to this man who virtually gave a solid shape to the Indian two wheeler industry. He will be missed not just by his family but by hundreds and thousands whose lives he enriched with the success of his Hero Group. Coming to the other news, Maruti Suzuki launched its premium hatchback Baleno. This will be the second product that will be rolled out from the Nexa outlets of the company, the first being the S-Cross. The company has priced it at an amazing starting price of less than Rs 5 lakh. The car is bound to do well. We have reviewed the car and are very impressed by it, be it its styling, its performance or its features. In the world of two wheelers, we got a chance to ride the Mahindra Mojo, a 300cc bike, for more than 400km. We are quite impressed by this motorcycle which has been built with an eye on the matured rider who loves speed, style, comfort and decent performance. But it was the CBR 650F from Honda that got us all excited. This bike is a pure sport bike with refined performance as its DNA. It’s not one of those intimidating bikes because it can be ridden with ease in normal city traffic and can zip furiously on an absolutely empty track. Apart from these reviews we have on our cover the great Polaris vehicle which conquered the tough Himalayan terrain in the Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya. Our senior motorsport correspondent Rahul Kapoor has written an extensive report of this rally. We also have a special report on tyre performance where our senior correspondent Joshua David Luther tested the EP150 tyres from Bridgestone at their proving grounds in Ayutthaya, Thailand. In the B2B section we have a detailed report on the recently concluded Busworld show in Sweden.

New Datsun Go-cross concept points to possible model expansion Datsun, the brand that saw a revival barely a year ago, has now globally unveiled a new concept car, the company’s second in just 17 months. The Datsun GO-cross Concept showcases the brand’s vision for possible expansion of the Datsun GO/GO+ family in high growth markets. It shares the same platform as Datsun GO+ and borrows key iconic design features from that vehicle. Yet it is a significant evolution, and underlines Datsun’s philosophy of continuously offering something new, exciting and innovative. The reborn Datsun brand is looking at possible expansion in new high growth markets such as Africa, Middle East, South East Asia and beyond. The announcement made during a special event at Nissan Global Headquarters coincided with the first anniversary of the start of sales in South Africa, the fourth of the brand’s initial launch market. The event also highlighted Datsun’s presentation of the story of the brand’s return to international media visiting the Tokyo Motor Show. Nearly three decades after the name was last used, Datsun’s return was announced in 2012 and its first cars went on sale in India
www.motownindia.com
in March 2014. Since then, more than 100,000 new Datsun cars have been sold in total in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa. Vincent Cobee, Global Head of Datsun, said: “This is a significant day for Datsun. We have successfully completed the first phase of our return, and feel proud that through our vehicles more than 100,000 customers have been able to make their dream of personal
mobility a reality. In fact, the latest figure of cars sold since Datsun GO was launched in India in March 2014 now stands at 114 000 units.
“Our expansion plans include the continued growth of sales and service networks in our four existing markets, while expanding our offering to three models in India. There, we will launch a totally new model at the beginning of 2016, which will be the first Nissan Motor model based on the new Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF-A architecture”. “We are also studying further business expansion possibilities in other high-growth markets around the world, including Africa,” said Cobee. He added: “Whatever happens next, the Datsun core values of ‘Dream, Access and Trust’ will continue to influence the next phase of our brand’s journey.”

DR. BRIJMOHAN LALL MUNJAL 1923-2015
The Real Hero is No More REPORT BY P. THARYAN
T
he real Hero of the Indian auto industry is no more. Dr.Brijmohan Lall Munjal , the Founder of the diversified Hero Group and a Padma Bhushan recepient, passed away on November 1, 2015. He was 92 years old. Dr. Munjal was also the Chairman Emeritus of Hero MotoCorp. He is survived by his three sons: Suman Kant, Pawan Kant and Sunil Kant. A visionary of immense calibre, Dr.Munjal built an empire in the Indian twowheeler industry at a time when economic liberalisation were words none had heard of and when red tapism and government apathy towards industrial growth were a way of life in the country. He was not a great orator but when he spoke, he did so from his heart. He spent more time strategising and building his business, rather than rambling away on the daises at various conventions. While good fortune and luck favoured him in his business life, so did personal tragedies burden him with sorrowful thoughts. Brij,as he was known, was among the four brothers who lived in undivided Punjab in the early 1940s and who went out to carve a niche for themselves in the Indian business landscape. His brothers were Dayanand, Satyanand, and Om. Brij was born in Kamalia in Lalpur district of undivided Punjab. The family was traditionally into vegetable trading from where they moved on to trading in bicycle components. A few years before 1947 when India
www.motownindia.com
got its Independence the Munjal family moved to Amritsar from Lahore only to shift their base once again to Ludhiana four years later after Amritsar became a hotbed of political turbulence. When Nehru and his team began their feeble attempt to promote industrialisation in an India bereft of any infrastructure, industry and money, the Munjals grabbed the opportunity to build upon their cycle components business. The Munjals subsequently got into manufacture of cycles. Brij was instrumental in scouting for new opportunities in India and abroad. Brij travelled to distant lands in Germany and Japan. Om Prakash, the youngest of the four brothers was given the task to set up dealerships across the country. With foreign know-how their cycle manufacturing business started flourishing. The first tragedy that hit the family was in 1968 when the eldest brother Dayanand died. Despite the loss of an elder brother, the rest worked hard to build the business stronger. By the 1970s the Hero Cycles business had grown to such a level that it became the largest manufacturers of bicycles in India. Soon thereafter, it also figured in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world. A decade or so later, the company diversified into mopeds and later into auto components too. But the mega turn of events happened in the early 1980s when the Hero Group tied up with Honda to manufacture motorcycles in India. There was no looking back for the company despite the fact that the two
companies parted ways in 2011. Hero Honda, after several decades of successful run became Hero MotoCorp. The company continues to be the leader in the Indian two wheeler industry with an annual turnover of around Rs 28,000 crore. Hero Honda set up its first assembly line in Dharuhera, Haryana. The first 100cc Hero Honda motorcycle came off the assembly line in April 1985 and since then it simply consolidated its No.1 position in the global motorcycle industry. But Raman Kant Munjal, Brijmohan’s elder son who was instrumental in helping his father set up Hero Honda, suddenly died in 1991. That was yet another personal tragedy to hit the family. In 2015, Brij’s younger brother O.P. Munjal too passed away. The next in line among his children, Pawan was groomed by Brij to take over the reins of the motorcycle business. But Briji never gave up despite these tragedies and worked hard to grow his business further. In June 2015, Brij stepped down from the position of Chairman of Hero MotoCorp to become Chairman emeritus. He passed on his baton to Pawan Kant Munjal who is now the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Hero MotoCorp. Brijmohan Lall Munjal will be terribly missed in the Indian automotive industry. He was among the few surviving stalwarts in the Indian industry who was instrumental in taking India from a world without wheels to one where motorised wheels have given a meaningful definition to our lives!

BMW ‘Concept Stunt G 310’, is this the BMW-TVS bike? BMW Motorrad recently revealed the ‘Concept Stunt G 310’ at a bike show in a Brazil. According to unconfirmed sources, it could be the preview of the 300 cc bike that the company will be manufacturing with Indian two wheeler company TVS. Codenamed the K3, the concept bike has an uncanny resemblance to some of the spy shots of the motorcycle planned by this collaboration. BMW is expected to produce several models based on the K3 platform. The BMW-TVS partnership will be producing motorcycles in the range of sub-500cc. While the bikes will be branded TVS in India, it would be sold abroad under the BMW brand name. Four-time World and European stunt riding champion, Chris Pfeiffer, contributed to the realisation of the BMW Concept Stunt 310. “Stunt riding is a demanding and multi-faceted sport. Ideally you need a compact, agile bike which is also stable and robust at the same time. You
have to achieve the ideal balance between aggressiveness and control”, explains Pfeiffer. The BMW Concept Stunt G 310 combines all these qualities and makes clear at first sight: the newly developed 1-cylinder engine allows for very compact proportions thanks to its innovative concept. The special feature is the cylinder which is inclined towards the rear and the cylinder head which is rotated by 180 degrees. This permits optimum placement of the engine in the motorcycle and a short wheelbase in spite of the long swinging arm thereby making the motorcycle very agile. The low-slung front and the raised tail section promise fast and nimble changes of direction as well as dynamic riding. By

shifting the intake area towards the front while also moving the exhaust system towards the rear it was possible to place the rear silencer in an upright standing position underneath the seat between engine and spring strut. In this way the silencer is optimally protected and does not limit the stunt rider’s freedom of movement. Even though you may hardly see it, you will not overhear it. A special highlight on the BMW
Concept Stunt G 310 is the “stunt tail” which was specifically developed by BMW Motorrad and which has not been seen in this shape on a stunt bike. It is milled from solid aluminium and features an opening in the centre, which offers the stunt rider a hold for his foot. Together with the non-slip seat, the aluminium component also ensures a stable seating position when riding thanks to its shape.

MOTORSPORT Hamilton wins in Austin to seal his 3rd F1 championship title 2 were drenched in the wet. Similarly on Saturday, Qualifying had to be postponed to Sunday before the race as conditions were undrivable. When the weather relatively cleared on Sunday, Rosberg stood on pole for the race ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. Rosberg had lost the lead as Hamilton aggressively eased him aside in the first corner, but retaken it from Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo during the pit stops on the 19th lap and held it through various virtual and real safety car interventions until the 48th lap. On lap 49 of 56, Hamilton found his way ahead of team mate
Rosberg as he slid wide into turn 12 to take the lead. Hamilton sealed the victory and championship only seconds ahead of the finish line where Rosberg who was 2.8 seconds behind Hamilton, came across the line only 0.5 seconds ahead of Sebastian Vettel who was the only man who could have denied the Brit his championship this weekend if the German had finished ahead. Hamilton made history after his title claim when he became the 2nd British driver after Jackie Stewart to claim 3 titles and
becoming the first ever British driver to have successfully defended his title. The 3rd championship crown also brings Hamilton level with Ayrton Senna, his childhood hero.

It’s a podium for Mahindra racing! The second season of the FIA Formula E Championship could not have started on a better note for Mahindra Racing as its team driver Nick Heidfeld scored their first ever Formula E podium, finishing third in a tight battle on the streets of Beijing. Mahindra’s new M2Electro Formula E car made a strong start to the 2015/16 season with Nick Heidfeld and Bruno Senna qualifying P3 and P7 respectively and finishing P3 & P13. Mahindra Racing is one of only ten teams – and the only Indian team – to compete in the FIA Formula E Championship. The race was won by Renault e.dams’ Sebastien Buemi who made the perfect start to his FIA Formula E Championship campaign at the Beijing ePrix. He also recorded the fastest lap (1m39.993s) in the race. But it was also a bittersweet weekend for the French squad, which was forced to retire Nico Prost’s car after a rear wing failure. Swiss-born Buemi then enjoyed a practically perfect race by claiming fastest lap en route to his and the team’s first

victory of the new season. Prost, meanwhile, struggled off the line, losing his second position to Mahindra’s Nick Heidfeld before Lucas di Grassi (ABT Schaeffler Audi) also nipped past. The trio battled throughout the first half of the race while Buemi extended his lead. It was the halfway point of the race that would prove vital for the Frenchman as a flawless pit-stop from the squad helped him re-gain third from Heidfeld. However, his luck would soon run out when Race Control deemed his car unsafe to continue as a result of a rear wing failure. Buemi meanwhile went on to take the chequered flag and a first win of the season by 11 seconds from runner-up di Grassi and Heidfeld, who completed the podium. The victory helped Buemi score a maximum 30 points. He therefore heads to Round 2 as championship leader, while Renault e.dams also top the teams’ standing Buemi admitted he didn’t make the best of starts, but he fended off the fast-starting Mahindra of Nick Heidfeld
into the first corner to hold the lead. From there on after he dominated the race. His ability to stretch his lead was stymied twice by the intervention of the Full Course Yellow. This caution system was making its Formula E debut and was given a thumbs up by the drivers. Meanwhile, Dilbagh Gill, Team Principal of Mahindra Racing Formula E Team said: “I don’t quite have the words to describe what the first podium means to the team and to Mahindra. The performance of both cars in qualifying and Nick’s final result (the fastest team behind Renault) shows that the approach we took to developing the M2Electro powertrain was the right one.” Nick Heidfeld said: “I want to thank the team for providing me with a car that can achieve a result like this. I can be a demanding driver and as a team we pushed hard to get this result. We will build on this achievement, refine the car and I believe the M2Electro can continue to race at the front of the grid. I had to work hard
to defend on the final laps as other cars were putting pressure on me from behind but I’m glad that our race strategy left me with enough energy to keep them behind me right to the chequered flag.”

ome of the toughest off-road races and rallies of the world like the Dakar, Baja 1000 and the Rain Forest Challenge have a common thread that binds them together. They push man and machine beyond the limit. There is
one more equally challenging and tough rally that can find a place in this hallowed club of brute events. It is the Indian cross country motor rally--the Maruti Suzuki Raid de Himalaya (or in legend considered quite simply as “The Raid”). The Raid, the highest altitude rally in the world, is believed to be one of the toughest rallies.
And this year there were surprises plenty as All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) maker Polaris dethroned the long time champion Suresh Rana to grab the coveted first place. Rana is a nine-time champion of the Raid, yet he lost this time. He knew the terrain like the back of his hand. But Polaris’s Raj Singh Rathore tore through competition
and emerged a clear winner. During the course of the 6-day rally, spirits were lifted, morale were destroyed, tyres were blown, axles were broken, shoulders were dislocated, tears were shed, dust was unsettled, mountains were conquered, valleys took breaths away, heroes were crowned and the brave were rewarded.

Fortyone four-wheeled vehicles and 45 motorcycles took on the gruesome Xtreme category and 50 cars started the Adventure Trail while 31 motorcycles entries were recorded for the Moto Quad Alpine course. The Xtreme and the Adventure TSD categories were split in two segments each --the Xtreme 4x4 for 4 wheelers and the Moto Quad Xtreme for 2 wheelers. Similarly the TSD category was split into Adventure Trail and Moto Quad Alpine. All 167 teams and riders had a journey of approximately 2200kms of harsh yet breathtakingly picturesque Himalayan terrain which kept climbing gradually as the stages progressed. The lowest altitude was 6,460 feet above sea level in Dalhousie. It went up all the way to 14,114 feet in Umba La which the competitors had to conquer not once but twice on
When the final times were recorded, scrutinised, and revealed, Rathore and Amber Udasi were crowned the 2015 Champions of the Raid de Himalaya. They were closely followed by Tsering Lhakpa and Venu Ramesh Kumar in 2nd place. Suresh Rana and Parminder Thakur had to settle for the 3rd
this journey. This year instead of the regular route through Leh, the organisers Himalayan Motorsport of the Raid had planned a route through Ladakh’s Zanskar Valley handpicking each and every inhospitable terrain they could find to make life difficult for all the competitors. The basic route day by day in a nutshell can be explained by a start point from Leg 1: Shimla (HP) – Leg 2: Manali (HP) – Leg 3: Dalhousie (HP) – Leg 4: Srinagar (J&K) – Leg 5: Rangdum (J&K) – Padum (J&K) - Rangdum – Leg 6: Srinagar (J&K). Six days consisting of 6 legs were divided into 14 Special Stages where the Xtreme category cars and bikes would be competing in addition to the transport checkpoints.
THE FRONTLINE From day 1, the battle at the front in the Xtreme category was warm and was heating up stage by stage. Suresh Rana/Parminder Thakur in their No. 2 Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara were battling it out with Raj Singh Rathore/Amber Udasi in the No. 5 Polaris RZR 1000 Turbo for the top spot on the daily table. After the first leg which included SS1, SS2, and SS3, Rana/Thakur were leading by around 1 min 56 seconds over Rathore/Udasi. On Leg 2, SS4 and SS5 were forced to be cancelled due to technical difficulties therefore SS6 was the sole Special Stage to be the competitive stage for the leg. On this stage Rathore/Udasi closed in the gap by finishing just 15 seconds ahead of Rana/Thakur but overall, the former team was still in the lead, but only just. Leg 3 where the start point was from Dalhousie and finish was in
Srinagar, the leg had 2 Special stages, SS7 and SS8. Rana/ Thakur found some much needed breathing room finishing 2 mins 28 seconds ahead of Rathore/Udasi. On the fourth day, Rathore/ Udasi closed in even further clocking in a time of 1:35:07 on SS9 & SS10, just under 4 mins of Rana/Thakur’s time of 1:38:58. By Leg 5, the stage from Rangdum - Padum - Thang is where it all went south for Rana/Thakur. At some point in SS11/12, Rana/ Thakur rolled their Vitara and damaged their entire right side of the car. This led Rathore/Udasi to capitalise on the Manali man and his navigator in addition to Tsering Lhakpa/Venu Ramesh Kumar in the No. 16 Polaris RZR XP4 1000 to get ahead of Rana/Thakur. On this leg, Rana/Thankur lost 22 mins due to the crash and literally handed the rally to Team Polaris and sealed his own fate. On Leg 6, the final leg from Rangdum to Srinagar, through Parkhachik –Sankhoo – Umba La – Drass (the second coldest inhabited place in the world), Lhakpa/Kumar found a whole minute on Rathore/Udasi and 5 mins 30 seconds (approx.) over Rana/Thakur in the penultimate and conclusive SS13 and SS14. While Lhakpa/Kumar clocked in a time of 1:51:30, Rathore/Udasi checked in at 1:52:30 and Rana/ Thakur with their damaged Vitara clocked a time of 1:57:04, 7 seconds behind 4th place overall finishing team of Harpreet S Bawa/ Virender Kashyap in the No. 7 Maruti Suzuki Gypsy. Rathore/Udasi finished with a lead of 16 mins and 2 seconds over Lhakpa/Kumar and 26 mins and 54 seconds in total over Rana/ Thakur.

There have been many crashes over the years in the raid, and the 17th edition wasn’t left out as the bright Yellow No. 9 Gypsy of Samrat Yadav/Gaurav Angra battling in the Xtreme category on Day3, from Dalhousie – Srinagar in a transport stage lost control of the vehicle and had a massive crash that left both the driver and the navigator to be air lifted by helicopter for medical aid. Not much has been revealed of their current condition but it is confirmed that both driver and navigator are stable and recovering in hospital. Motown India team hope and wish a speedy recovery to Samrat and Gaurav and hope to see both back fastened firmly back in their seats and
competing soon. On the Moto Quad Alpine course the following day, we found the KTM Duke of No. 269 Abrar Bin Ayub, lying on the road with him next to the motorcycle. Though Ayub was unhurt physically but the brave rider was in tears for not being able to complete the stage, therefore leaving him out of contention to even complete the rally. Thankfully when the rider lost control of his motorcycle, no serious damage was done.
HONORABLE MENTIONS Though she never managed to finish the entire Alpine course of the rally, No. 281 Shiana Virdi, a 17 year old female rider was the youngest competitor in the Raid this year. As it was her first time, it is a mandatory rule of the competition that you cannot compete in the Xtreme category without prior experience in the Adventure/Alpine course first. Despite her experience with off road riding and motocross with much more powerful machines, her choice for the Alpine course was a Mahindra

MOTORSPORT Team Polaris who took the team trophy had one hell of a ride. With two of their cars finishing 1st and 2nd, another pokey little 3rd car of the team managed to finish the rally. No. 30 Polaris RZR 1000 Turbo driven by Lowis Siangshai and navigator Sonam Wangchuk, a pair of 23 year olds rallying for the first time ever finished 9th overall despite suffering a blown tyre on the very final SS, the duo from
Shilong crawled their car to the finish line refusing to give up till the very end. Another honorable mention goes to the organisers, Himalayan Motorsport for creating, handling and organising the entire event that went on without a hitch and Maruti Suzuki for helping in supporting such an amazing event. A team that deserves a lot credit is the Text100 team of Kumar
‘Ashu’ Ashutosh and Prathmesh Navalkar for managing 40 people from the media, dealing with our daily tantrums, waking us up at 2 in the morning and making sure all of us were happy. Seriously hats off to you guys for doing such a great job, and mostly dealing with our tantrums. Apart from teams that organised the entire event, none of them probably work as hard as the
20 strong cab drivers who were responsible for the Media. With 12 drivers remaining in convoy by the end of the rally as some media personnel only endured the rally till mid way, the remainder of the cab drivers drove selflessly and tirelessly through the day and night with minimal amount of sleep. The media convoy drivers deserve a round of applause and high praise, they conquered the Raid as much

DRIVER OF NO.2 MARUTI SUZUKI GRAND VITARA What kind of background do you have in rallies and how have you reached to the level that you are today? How did Suresh Rana end up becoming the most popular homegrown rally driver nationally? Since 2001, I have been participating in this rally. It all started off as a hobby. I just happened to stumble upon it and eventually I started to pursue it professionally. The Raid was the first rally I ever did back in 2001. For the first 4 years, I only used to do the Raid, then eventually I started to participate in more rallies. That helped in gathering more and more experience by helping me understand and figure out how to adapt to different driving styles of different terrains like the mountains of the Raid, or the desert of Desert Storm. I have won the raid 9 times and this year
What is the difference between both cars and how has the change affected you? The cars aren’t very different to drive when compared to each other. Both are 4x4s but the Gypsy is much lighter. So I’ve had to change my driving style a little to adapt how the Vitara behaves to certain inputs in certain situations.
Raid, you know this terrain like the back of your hand. How was the 2015th edition for you? This year was also very good for me. I stood 1st overall in the Xtreme category. Because of the Moto Quad category, technically they [Team Polaris] don’t stand in the overall top spot. There are some issues we are facing. Hope we get some clarity on that soon.
You’re a 9 time champion of the
What are you looking forward to
was also a good year for me. I will keep on pushing and giving my best for years to come. Since when have you had support from Maruti Suzuki? And what were you driving before? I have Maruti Suzuki backing me now for the past three years. I used to drive a Gypsy back then and now I am rallying with a Grand Vitara.
next? And how are you going to prepare yourself for it? My next target is Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm which is next year in the summer. I will start my preparations for that soon.

Done it all, Won it All!!! RAJ SINGH RATHORE (OVERALL WINNER - TEAM POLARIS) DRIVER OF NO 5 POLARIS RZR 1000 TURBO You have been doing this rally for quite a while now, and you have finally officially won it. How does that make you feel to be in the Raid Hall of Fame? Actually, I had also won last year. But because of some issues I faced with one of my tyres I finished overall 4th. I came into the rally with a target of victory and nothing else and zeroed in on the Polaris RZR 1000 Turbo for my choice of weapon and I was 100pc confident that I would win this year. I didn’t
even push myself, I feel I only gave it my 70pc. I took the victory very easily with a 27 min lead over the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. Last year you were driving the Polaris RZR XP900, this year you have this beast, the RZR 1000 Turbo. How different are the two to drive? There is a big difference between the two. With the 1000, we have 18 inches of suspension travel. The 900 only has 84bhp, while
the 1000 produces over 144bhp. Approximately, its twice the power. I was speaking to Suresh Rana, and he wasn’t very happy as he feels your cars should be in a separate category. What do you have to say about that? Why?..... Winning is winning. You are driving your vehicle, I’m driving my vehicle. Categories don’t matter. What matters is overall. This year you won this rally
overall, and you won in category in RFC. So 2015 has been a really good year for you I presume. What are your future prospects in more rallies for next year? According to me Polaris is the future of motorsport in the country. I will prepare myself for desert storm which is up next summer and the next year for RFC, I will be coming with the High lifted 1000 turbo and I’m confident that I will win.
Winning is winning. You are driving your vehicle, I’m driving my vehicle. Categories don’t matter. What matters is overall.

Lhakpa, you finished 2nd overall driving the Polaris XP4 1000, how does the car feel to drive? Tsering Lhakpa : It’s like a battle tank. It’s really great for this event. For a long raid cross country rally like this, there is nothing like the Polaris. Like I said it’s like a battle tank. It will drive over anything. A little disadvantage on tarmac, it’s just that it tends to tip over sometimes due to the speed that we carry in the corners. But on the rough surface it makes up lost ground brilliantly. You’ve done this rally before and this is your first time in the Polaris doing this event. How

was it? TL : I’ve done this rally before in different cars and this being the first time in a Polaris, I’m so happy that I got a podium finish. Any plans for your future? You plan to continue rallying like this? What is your next target? TL : I’m really grateful to Polaris for giving me this opportunity. Now I think our main target is to conquer Desert Storm this coming summer.

aruti Suzuki products have always been synonymous with one expression, “Kitna Deti hein?” It means, “How much does the vehicle give in terms of fuel average?” The reason for this is obvious. Maruti Suzuki has always been making vehicles for the masses and the masses have only this question to ask. To hell with the features, to hell with the looks, to hell with the drive and handling and to hell with everybody else, because if you are buying a Maruti Suzuki product all you are looking at is its fuel average. At Maruti Suzuki everything else is taken for granted.... the build, the quality, the availability of spare parts and the easy maintenance. Things changed when Maruti Suzuki decided to start a new Nexa set of showrooms. This showroom was not meant for the aam admis (common people) of the country. Only premium vehicles are to be sold through these Nexa outlets and the
first one to plonk itself there was the S-Cross. The S-Cross is premium when it comes to features, road handling and driving ease, but when it comes to styling it’s a bit on the “wanting” side. Then the name of Baleno was announced. It’s a name many of us have heard and experienced. Maruti did have a Baleno sedan a long while ago but that was discontinued. It was a good car but a product which the aam admi did not appreciate a lot. Now comes the new avatar of the Baleno and everything seems to have brightened. The car had a global launch at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. This means, the car is going to be a global player and India is one of the markets for this car. The Baleno will be exported to over 100 countries and it has been launched in India first. So much for the importance of the Indian market and this premium hatch! On the looks front, it’s appetizingly awesome. The design is fresh, smart and absolutely stunning. By Maruti’s standards, it’s a major leap forward.

The design of the Baleno is based on a concept that is termed “Liquid Flow”. Does that ring a bell? Of course, Maruti’s closest competitor Hyundai has a design concept known as “Fluidic Design” for its cars. This is “Liquid Flow” and it’s equally compelling. The design of the Baleno is extremely refreshing, whether it is the exterior or the interior. The curving lines, the bold shoulders and the overall flowing design of the Baleno give it a very dynamic and energetic look and feel. Premium-ness comes naturally to this car. The car is being offered in both petrol as well as a diesel powertrain. The 1.2 litre petrol VVT engine and the 1.3 litre DDiS 190diesel engine are mated to a five speed manual transmission. The petrol model has also an option of an automatic transmission. This is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The

Baleno is the first car from Maruti Suzuki to have the CVT technology. All other automatics in its portfolio have the AMT or the Automated Manual Transmission. I got to drive all the three variants. Each of them impressed me. The CVT, I presume is for those interested in safe and easy driving. It does not have the bull power like the others in terms of driving. The CVT eases your acceleration but gives you tremendous comfort while driving in thick of traffic. Coming to features, this area is another high point of the car. Like its exterior design, the interior features are quite impressive. But before that, each of the petrol and diesel models comes in four trim levels- Sigma (base model), Delta, Zeta and Alpha. The Delta variant has an option of a CVT. The interiors are uncomplicated

with a premium black shade with silver ornamentation. The dashboard is clutter free and its looks are enhanced by the multiinformation speedometer display. The 4.2 inches colour TFT displays information like clock, average speed, the engine’s torque and power, fuel efficiency, etc. Then there is the SmartPlay Infotainment system with a 7-inch touch screen display that accommodates what is known as an Apple CarPlay system. Now with Apple iphones selling like real apples in the apple season, this industryfirst offering is amazing. It is basically an interface that allows the occupant to use his or her iphone through the car’s in-built display. One can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, listen to music and audio books etc. The system can also be connected to smartphones using MirrorLink.

There are also slots for USB and SD cards, thereby ensuring that entertainment is not compromised in this car. The car is also packed with the usual, yet useful features like audio controls, tilt and telescopic steering, keyless push start/ stop, reverse parking camera and voice recognition etc. Obviously a lot of these features are there as you move up the value chain in terms of higher trim levels. Once seated you become aware of the space that has been created for your comfort. There is ample shoulder room and a lot of leg room. The boot space is incredible with 339 litre of storage. As for other storage space for your bottles and other knick knacks, there is plenty of it built all along the doors as well as the central armrest. Coming to the exteriors, the Baleno has been built on an all new generation platform which is lighter and stronger, almost 100kg lighter and 10pc stronger than the existing one in this category. Apart from the stylish exterior with energetic and aerodynamic design, the car comes with 16 inches alloy wheels (for the top trim levels), UV cut glasses for the window panes that block out harmful ultra violet rays,
www.motownindia.com
high intensity discharge projector headlamps with DRLs, “Follow me Home” headlights, stainless steel door scalps and chrome door handles, blacked out A, B and C pillars and a roof spoiler. Safety too has been given a lot of priority in this car. With this new generation platform, one can be rest assured of better strength, rigidity, crash performance and NVH. Built on Suzuki’s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT), the Baleno comes with crumple zones which absorb energy in the event of an impact, while the body frame disperses the impact energy away from the cabin. As standard fitment there are great features like dual airbags, seatbelts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, front disc brakes with Antilock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). The driving experience too was very satisfying. With both the petrol as well as the diesel powertrains, I could experience the right power and torque as we drove along straight and winding roads. The acceleration is good and at higher speeds, the vehicle stability too is remarkable. The NVH levels have been perfectly fine tuned because despite
the potholes and bad roads, the quiet cabin conditions were impressive. When it comes to the CVT, it may feel a tad slow on the take but then CVTs are supposed to work that way, providing a jerk free acceleration and a smooth ride. As it automatically shifts gears and moves ahead, the car picks up speed with considerable ease. If you are looking at very zippy rides then the petrol and diesel manual mates are good. But if you are looking for a more hard core city driving through a maze of traffic every day of your life, then it’s definitely an automatic for you. The car feels well planted on the road even at high speeds and the steering is adequately responsive and does not snatch away the fun of steering, despite it being an electric assisted one. As for the sharp corners and turns and even the potholes, the car handles smartly and the McPhersons and torsion beams balance things well. With ABS and EBD being a standard feature, one can be assured of good and effective braking. Every which way, the Baleno is bound to impress you and could perhaps be the game changer for Maruti Suzuki when it comes to premium vehicles. MI

FIRST DRIVE 2015 FORD FIGO
MR. COOL Report: RAHUL KAPOOR / Photography: MOTOWN INDIA
A
few years ago, Ford gave us a small hatch back based on the Fiesta Classic platform and I thought it was brilliant, so much that my family and I actually bought one. Having some of its roots from America, it likes to binge on fuel, even Ford admits the fuel economy of the petrol or the diesel wasn’t the best and after a while, with the competition introducing newer cars over the course with updated engines, it was down on power as well. Now however, there is a new Mr. Cool. Ford has launched an all new Figo hatchback in India. While the previous one was only manufactured in India and exported to South Africa and Mexico, the New Figo is actually all new from the ground up. Internationally it’s called the Ford Ka. But in India, Ford decided to go with a much loved and well established name plate. Designers at Ford need to be applauded for the job they did with the styling of the car. Some might say that the grille is a lot like an Aston Martin, and I’m sure they are tired of hearing about it. But compared to the Cygnet small car Aston Martin came out with, the Figo is gold. I think it’s the best looking hatchback money can buy right now in the Indian market, but I also feel the rear is a bit under styled. They could have gone a bit more aggressive with the chisel at the back. The interior has been changed completely from the old one as well. The cabin is laid out identical to the Figo Aspire. While the Aspire gets a dual black and beige interior, the hatchback gets a more laid back all black interior. But instead of the dust attractive piano black finish accents, the hatch back gets, an OCD friendly, grey coloured plastic

accents on the dash and steering wheel. The door handles and gear stick console get the same treatment. While leather upholstery is available on the Aspire, the new Figo settles for beautifully stitched soft fabric upholstery over the supportive seats. At the rear, it’s much of the same story, you get pretty comfortable rear seats with ample head room, and knee room where three regular people can easily fit. While the old Figo lacked interior storage space, the new one has so much of it that you might just run out of things to put in them. There is ample room in the door pockets, under the climate control system, and cup holders and cubby holes along the centre console between the front seats. Apart from the top Titanium+ variants, all other variants get a MyDock mobile phone cradle on top of the centre console that can charge and house a Smartphone and act as a semi sat-nav / infotainment system connected by Bluetooth, USB or an Auxiliary cable. While the Titanium + variant don’t get the MyDock, you do get Ford SYNC with AppLink. For safety measures, Ford took a bold step with the Aspire by providing front dual airbags as standard and 6 airbags in the top variants, the hatch back does get the same treatment of 6 airbags in total on top trim but as standard only a driver airbag is available. Across the chassis and the structure of the car, Ford says most of it is high strength steel and opening and closing the door you do feel they didn’t take any shortcuts as the door feels thick and chunky. Just like the Aspire, the Figo aslo gets the same powertrain family. A 1.2 litre petrol engine, a 1.5 litre diesel both mated to 5 speed manual gear boxes and a 1.5 litre petrol engine with a dual clutch automatic

transmission. For this drive, we drove the 1.5 litre petrol automatic and the 1.5 litre diesel powered cars.
We drove the automatic petrol version first. The 1.5 litre 4 cylinder turbo charged engine produces 110bhp and 136Nm of torque. Mated to the 6-speed DCT gearbox the engine is extremely smooth and so are the gear changes. In ‘D’ the car is ideal for city conditions while keeping a check on fuel consumption. But with 110bhp on board, it’s not as fast as it sounds. Set the gearbox in ‘S’ and everything livens up, shifts are quicker and acceleration is improved. You can also shift gears yourself with the help of a +/- buttons on the gear lever. The regular sequential system would have been better

and a lot more satisfying, but it’s more focused on city conditions than winning races. Ford has other cars to do that. And hence with the automatic gearbox, the Figo has a certified 17kmpl fuel economy.
Replacing the 1.4L duratorq engine from the old Figo, the new 1.5L TDCI engine is a peach. With almost a 100bhp at its disposal and 215Nm of torque, this engine inches this little ford into semi hot hatch territory, just 4bhp less than the Polo GT TDI and it does one better by being a full lakh cheaper than the German. To drive, we found the diesel the best option in the Aspire, and the same with the hatchback. With the turbo kicking in at just 1500rpm, you get instant acceleration in any gear, at any time, at any rpm. There is no sluggishness in the power delivery. The 5 speed manual gearbox is a bit clunky at first but over time you get accustomed to its nature. I can recall my gear box was just like that when it was new in the old one and now I think it’s one of the
www.motownindia.com
WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
best gearboxes with its short shift throws. It’s not clunky, nor is it just buttery making it less responsive to the tough and feel. It’s in the middle between clunky and perfection, just where it’s supposed to be. The clutch seems to be really well weighted. One of the best characteristics of Ford is their stability. We found a good stretch of empty road in a controlled environment for the test and were able to max out both cars and test them right on the limit. While the Automatic Petrol managed to clock around 190kmph, the diesel maxed out at 180kmph. Both cars just sat on the limit with no hesitation, glitch, or anything falling apart.
www.motownindia.com
The Figo’s stability on the limit is staggering. Even the engine felt comfortable sitting at the top. The ride is good, the steering is well balanced, the top variant gets lots of safety features, it looks good and the standard petrol version is the most powerful engine in its segment and the diesel too has more power that you would know what to do with. So from my evaluation, the Figo is a proper contender in the competition and with such competitive pricing and Ford completely rectifying their after sales service and bringing down the costs, it is definitely worth the offer… and then some. But these days, most SUVs that boast of mighty off-road abilities are seldom taken off road because the owners are wary about damaging them as they are just so expensive to buy and maintain. But a group of Japanese hardy men who call themselves Isuzu have a big giant SUV called the MU-7. It is a full blown truck with giant tyres with an extremely high ground clearance and enough power to keep you moving in anything and everything. We drove the MU-7 last year and we thought it was pretty good for its size. Now however, Isuzu has added some new bits to it and thrown in a 5-speed CVT automatic transmission in as well. We had to have a go at it and see what’s what. From the outside, the car remains untouched. The standard car needed a volume knob for the infotainment system because the buttons of the touch screen system were way too small. same 3.0L 4 cylinder i-TEQ VGS Turbo Diesel engine that does duty on the manual also powers the automatic version producing 161bhp and 333Nm of torque with a fuel economy of 12.8kmpl. The car is relatively economical for its size and spec. The Automatic transmission is really smooth though above 3000rpm, the noise from the engine is quite significant in the cabin. The MU-7 unfortunately isn’t available as a full blown 4x4, it only has to deal with a 4x2 rear wheel drive. The 4X4 will only be missed when the vehicle is taken to extreme off-road terrains but because of its huge tyres and more than adequate torque, it can easily get its way out of any rough situation. In the city, the automatic comes very handy and one forgets the fact that he is driving a giant vehicle with the ease of a small Maruti car! But just to test out the ability of the car, we did take it a little bit off road just to see how it feels and test out the suspension. On road or even off, the suspension is brilliant and the ride is quite comfortable even over the rough stuff. With only rear wheel propulsion, the car performed pretty well on our test off road. The ground clearance of the SUV was really high therefore uneven cross axle dips didn’t hinder the car at all. It just waded itself through. Even the automatic transmission worked extremely well off road. Mechanically, the car MU-7 ticks all the boxes for its abilities on the road and off the road, but there are some things in the SUV that could have been improved. The interior floor I felt was a tad too high which leaves even the front passengers to sit with their knees high and though the leather upholstery is plush and comfortable, the stitching could have been improved. The third row seats are almost touching the ground but then the leg room is ample in all three rows of seats. Folding away the 3rd row of seats also massively increases the boot space of the car. The last time around we managed to fit an entire full sized bicycle in the back with room to spare. So if you are looking for a tough rugged beast that transforms itself to the road and then again when the tarmac disappears, (which is very often in India) the Isuzu MU-7 will do the job brilliantly. Compared to the prices of some of the SUVs that are with the competitors, this one is quite decently priced. MI

ave you ever cooked a dish in your life? Have you served it to a handful of people? What’s been the reaction? “Ooh it’s too hot...could have been less chilly”, “A bit more salt could have done wonders”, “It’s actually awesome”, “Wow, I have never tasted one like this before, really yummy”, “Kind of good, but...” Now imagine making a brand new motorcycle for the enfants terribles of the country! You are bound to get a lot of reactions, some good, some not so good and maybe some extremely gratifying. Now let’s turn our attention to the new Mahindra Mojo. It’s a 300cc bike and it’s going into a segment where it’s only meant for the young. It’s a segment where the likes of KTM Duke’s are ruling the roost and the likes of TVS and BMW are going to bring in their 300cc bikes. At Mahindra Two Wheelers, a lot of care had to be taken make this bike. After having ridden the bike for almost 400km on almost all kinds of terrains and also in some very dry and wet conditions in a single day, I have formed a very definite opinion--That the Mojo is a bike that offers the best of several worlds. It’s a commuter’s dream, it’s a racer’s toy, it’s a style statement, it’s got a cruiser gene and it’s definitely a young man’s pride. That it’s also got a Mahindra DNA is like the icing on the cake. The first impression I got when I saw the Mahindra Mojo was that it has been smartly designed. After riding it for a very long distance, I came to the conclusion that it was very wisely made too. This motorcycle may not appeal to some of the boys who want to race all night long and drag the law enforcers out of their beds. It’s basically designed and made for those who want a bit of the fast and the furious with loads of comfort and safety. Thus the Mojo offers a very comfortable seating position for the rider, right amount of power and

torque in its 300cc engine, extremely dependable brakes and a fabulous set of tyres from Pirelli. The gentle roar from the engine only adds to bike’s finer points. The motorcycle will come in three different colour options: Red, black and white. We got the black coloured bike for the road test and it looked attractive with its golden coloured twin tube exposed frame, the golden coloured upside down forks, and the twin pod headlamps. The lamps have an 8mm eyebrow styled DRLs (daylight running lights) which give it an aggressive look from the front. As for the fuel, it’s got a muscular design, very chiselled and large that holds 21 litres of fuel. The digital console looks good and at night with its coloured dials in soft blue tone, it looks even more impressive. Apart from what the odometer and speedometer offer, this also records the highest speed achieved. The rear looks equally attractive with its stylised LED tail lights. The 12 LED lights glow bright without consuming major power. The twin exhausts, one each on either side add to the attractiveness of the bike. Now coming to the ride and performance, the Mahindra Mojo is a powerhouse with loads of practicality. Right from the electronic ignition to the strong suspension and comfortable seats, the bike offers a good amount of ease while riding. Yes, the handles could have been positioned a lot more aggressively to give it a race bike feel, but that would have made long

distance rides a tad uncomfortable. It is here where practicality has stepped in and the Mahindras have got in the right styling. With the Mojo I did achieve a max speed of 145 kmph on the straight. For the bike to have raced that fast hauling my bulky body was a very commendable feat. I know I could have gone faster and perhaps crossed the 150kmph speed mark but that would have further hurt my law abiding personality. After all I was riding on the national highway in Karnataka and this was no autobahn of Germany. Speed limits on our roads are never ever beyond 100kmph. But the striking outcome of this juvenile act was that the bike proved its stability and its rock solid road grip. The bike was as steady as the Rock of Gibraltar at very high speeds. As for the handling during high speed turns and corners, the bike braced itself rather well and this can be attributed a lot to the tubeless radial Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tyres and the outstanding suspension. Even on wet roads, the tyres had a good grip. On the one hand while the bike accelerated rather fast and smooth, on the other hand, it braked too with great ease. The disc brakes bring the bike to a halt without throwing the rider off his seat. Now if I were to sum up on my final impressions of the Mahindra Mojo, I would say that this bike is a natural buy for those wanting to move up the cc ladder. Those with adequate experience riding the 100 cc and 150cc bikes will feel a lot confident buying the Mojo. Even though the bike offers speed and aggression, it offers its best in the most comforting manner. This combination of subtle aggression coupled with race track features could have only been created by a company that knows extremely well the true Indian landscape. At Mahindra, that’s a way of life! MI

HONDA CBR 650F
GRACEFUL &
POWERFUL Report: P.THARYAN / Photography: MOTOWN INDIA
The HONDA CBR 650F may not be an overtly designed and dressed up motorcycle, but its subtle imagery is what could appeal to an entire generation of level headed riders. As HONDA has so rightly said, the Wild Doesn’t Always Scream, but when the need so arises, it does scream and tells the world it’s no pushover.
W
hen you see one of the television programmes shot by the guys at National Geographic, you realise how majestic and supreme some of the animals from the cat family are--the way they sprint, the way they pounce on their prey and the way they carry themselves in the thick of the jungle. Honestly speaking, there’s no artificial make up on them and no retakes for the cameramen in the animal kingdom. It’s just brute power and grace that define these animals. That’s what the Honda CBR 650F is all about- Grace and Power. The Wild Doesn’t Always Scream, says Honda and these words truly reflects the ethos of this 650cc motorcycle. Let me explain that a little more clearly. It’s not a bike for someone who is out there
who is in the habit of yelling out, “Look at me, Look at me....See how my bike looks, see how my bike roars...” This bike is for mature riders, those who are interested in enjoying a ride in its true essence. It’s a bike for those who are matured in the insides of their cerebral structure and are very graceful riders. In short, it’s a bike for the real rider. Now for those who have not grown out of their half pants, they may as well go and climb a tree or fly a kite! And I am bloody well serious about what I am saying. The Honda CBR 650F does not blow its own trumpet. The sound from the underbelly, almost tucked away exhaust is kind of filtered and only begins to pick up scream intensity when you tug at the throttle. As the engine revs up and the rpm dashes to upwards of 8000 figure you can hear the sound from the exhaust beginning to gently scream out as if to prove that it’s
got the power to outpace anything on the roads. It’s then you also realise the true potential of the inline four cylinder engine and you begin to have respect for its ability to mix petrol and air in the right proportion. You simply explode in ecstasy! The Honda CBR 650F is brought into India in Semi Knocked Down kit. It’s almost like a CBU form. I am sure the vehicle has been taxed heavily and that has resulted in an ex showroom price of Rs 7.3 lakh. I feel that that this price is quite reasonable, especially when one realises what the bike has to offer in terms of looks, ride quality, seat comfort, engine refinement and pace. Yes there is competition plenty from the likes of Kawasakis, Triumphs and Benellis, but the CBR in-line four has its own distinct advantages. The Honda CBR 650F motorcycle has a sporty and subtly aggressive look about it. SPECIFICATIONS

It’s then you also realise the true potential of the inline four cylinder engine and you begin to have respect for its ability to mix petrol and air in the right proportion. You simply explode in ecstasy! The almost ‘V’ shaped headlight embedded in a raked fairing gives a very conservative look. The front shape begins to taper as it reaches the windshield. This design is so effective when it comes to riding at high speeds. The rider can crouch, almost hugging on the chiselled fuel tank with ample thigh grip and support on either side of the tank. The LED tail lamp along with the meaty looking swingarm and the massive Dunlop tubeless rear tyre give the motorcycle a masculine look from the rear. Ergonomically speaking, the Honda CBR 650F is the right mix of smart design and ample

comfort for the rider. The motorcycle console has two separate counters. One shows all about rpm and the speed in digital format, while the other shows the time, fuel indicator, average and kilometres covered. Here too the display is all digital. While riding, it’s but obvious that the speed counter is the one which gets the occasional glimpse. The reading is all bold and in fonts so large that even those clipping the bike at speeds above 150km can see it crystal clear. The bike also comes with adjustable front brake lever. The clutch lever, however, does
not have such a feature. On either sides of the handle are buttons that have their own distinct functions. On the right are the engine kill switch and the start button, while on the left are the switches to adjust the headlight beam, a hazard warning button, horn and the indicators. There is also the Honda Ignition Security System which protects the bike from theft. It is an electronic device that automatically disables the starting of the engine in case if someone tries to start the bike with his own skeleton key. Coming to the seating position of the rider, it’s just perfect. The seats are padded and the

clip-on handle gives the rider the right level of grip for accelerated riding. There are no grab handles for the rear seat here and the sole Indian contribution to the SKD motorcycle is a saree guard that had to be fitted to pass the Indian homologation norms (for the picture shoot the dealer had removed it, obviously for aesthetic purposes). The guard does not look bad, though. But a piece of advice: Don’t let your lady wear a saree and sit behind you. It’s better if she hugs you tight, wearing a pair of Levis jeans. Babus in the Indian government offices may never fathom what I want to say! If you notice, the fairing around the front area of the bike that covers the engine to some

extent has enough chinks in it so that the hot air from the engine can be dissipated without frying the rider’s legs during long periods of riding. Among the strong points of this bike is the ride and handling. This is mainly because of the Steel Diamond frame on which the bike has been built and the front 41mm Telescopic Fork and the rear monoshock with 7-stage spring preload adjustment that form part of the suspension. The Dunlop tubeless tyres add to the road presence of the motorcycle giving it confident legs to walk and run. Speed comes naturally to the inline four cylinder engine. The sporty 4-2-1 exhaust
peeps out from the underbelly of the motorcycle. Some may find this a tad less showy. In fact, the mid range torque is rather exciting and zooming beyond 100kmph comes in a mere few seconds. The disc brakes with ABS were also tested in the real world. The results were astounding. The Honda CBR 650F may not be an overtly designed and dressed up motorcycle, but its subtle imagery is what could appeal to an entire generation of level headed riders. lectronic brake force distribution (EBD), Anti Lock Braking System (ABS), McPherson struts, torque, rpm, bhp, hill descent control, Continuously Variable transmission (CVT), many of these words and abbreviations mean a lot when it comes to a vehicle and the way it moves and stops. Tyres are often not given much attention unless they are mounted on gleaming alloys with snazzy
designs. They are always meant to roll, no matter what the situation is on the ground or the air. In rain, in hail, in bright and humid climes, on smooth and rough tarmacs, on tar and cement, tyres seem to have one job cut out for them… Roll Along. It’s underestimated and outshone by every other product connected to a vehicle. Yet tyres play a critical role in a vehicle. Just to reiterate what good tyres are meant to do, we were taken to Bridgestone’s Wet Surface Brake Test proving grounds in Ayutthaya, Thailand. It’s here we experienced what it means to drive on a good set of tyres. Bridgestone India launched their Ecopia series of tyres in India on October 7, 2015. The Ecopia series has been available in global markets for a while and boast of improved fuel efficiency, wet handling, low rolling resistance and superior grip. The company launched the EP150 and EP850 series in the Indian market and we flew down to Thailand to test the EP150 tyres at Bridgestone’s proving grounds in Ayutthaya, Thailand. Over the years as tyre technology has evolved, companies have innovated on the lines of providing superior comfort, performance, grip and efficiency. Today these tyres

undergo stringent tests to prove their capability to consumers and manufacturers alike. Bridgestone has a mammoth proving ground at Ayutthaya, Thailand which boasts of a Main Circuit, Multi Purpose Test Pad, Skid Pad, Wet and Dry Brake Testing, Straight Track Hydroplaning, Dry Handling Circuit, Wet Handling Circuit, Special Road Surfaces, Cornering Track Hydroplaning and a Slope Test. The facility is spread over 130 acres of land and has been developed keeping in mind real world road conditions. We conducted our tests on the EP150 175/65 R15 tyres set on a Honda Amaze. The tyres were tested for rolling resistance, braking, hydroplaning, wet handling, dry handling, slope test, multi-surface handling and

noise. The Ecopia series was pit against Bridgestone’s S322 and another significant competitor all set on Honda’s Amaze sedan. In the rolling resistance test the Ecopia series rolled 76.6 meters farther than the S322 and a 108.6 meters farther than the competitor. The rolling resistance test was conducted to check Ecopia’s low rolling resistance as claimed by Bridgestone. The significance of low rolling resistance is that it enables a vehicle to roll further without the need to accelerate the vehicle. The benefit consumers derive is a higher fuel efficiency. The company has claimed an increase in 7 pc fuel efficiency for vehicles using the Ecopia EP150 series which would roughly translate into savings worth Rs 21,120 over a span of four years. Bridgestone has set a benchmark

Rolling Resistance Test for the industry with the introduction of the Ecopia series. These tyres have been engineered with silica and other light and tough materials which improve roll resistance. The fuel savings offered by Ecopia contributes
to Bridgestone’s global goal of improving tyre rolling resistance by 25 pc by 2020. The Ecopia series also comes with a new tread design which has been engineered to push aside water to facilitate smooth rolling.

SPECIAL REPORT The tyres have an optimised 3D block shape and RIB-linked blocks for uniform road surface contact. The tread design helps reduce the effects of hydroplaning while braking and driving through wet road conditions. We tested the tyres on controlled wet road conditions and took the vehicles up to maximum of 85kmph. On sharp corners we felt a significant loss of traction while driving the car fitted with the competitor’s tyres. It became blatantly evident that the EP 150 tyres displayed superior grip and control on wet tarmac over the competitor’s 175/65 R14 tyres. While testing the cars for wet braking performance the Amaze fitted with EP150 stopped 4.57 meters before the one fitted with Bridgestone’s S322 and 4.3 meters before the one fitted with the competitor’s 175/65 R14 tyres. All three cars were taken up to a max speed of 80kmph and the brake pedal was completely compressed at the same braking start line. Vehicles tend to lose traction while braking on wet surfaces. This however can be
avoided with technological aids such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System). All the Amaze sedans used for the test were fitted with ABS. However the car fitted with the Ecopia EP150 tyres stopped 4.3 meters before the car with the competitors tyres. The tread design of the Ecopia EP150 optimises road surface contact on wet surfaces by pushing aside the water between the road and the tyre thus aiding better traction compared to that of the competitor’s tyres. When we consider Indian road conditions a lot has to be taken into account, broken roads are just one aspect. The materials used while constructing roads are substandard in most locations and loose gravel is common. One of the reasons why the tyre was invented was to facilitate a smoother and more comfortable ride. We tested the Ecopia EP150 on a Special Road Surface as well. The Special Road Surface at Bridgestone’s Ayutthaya proving grounds offers up to 10 different types of road surfaces including bumps, potholes and
loose gravel on which the tyres can be checked for comfort, smoothness and noise. We took the car up to 100kmph and found that the tyres did not create as much of a humming noise on concrete and tarmac as others do over such surfaces. While driving over bumps, potholes and through loose gravel we felt there was a slight improvement
over conventional tyres, the ride definitely felt smoother and more comfortable. The last test we conducted on the Ecopia tyres was a slope test, two tricycles were used in this test, one with the Ecopia EP150 and the other with the competitors 175/65 R14 tyres. The tricycles were launched from a set distance on slope of 3 degrees.
Slope Test

SPECIAL REPORT Just to give the competitors an advantage I sat on the tricycle fitted with Ecopia tyres while another fellow journalist sat on the tricycle fit with the competitor’s tyres. The advantage was that the other journalist weighed almost 20kgs less than me. Despite the difference in weight the tricycle fitted with Ecopia tyres rolled almost 30 paces more than that of
competition. The word Ecopia has been derived from a combination of “Ecology” and “Utopia” and is one of Bridgestone’s flagship brands to represent the company’s eco friendly initiatives. The biggest advantage these tyres offer to the Indian consumer is improved mileage, it also helps in cutting carbon emissions in the country.
After a comprehensive test review of the new Ecopia EP150 we found that these tyres also display significant prowess when it comes to traction, control, braking and comfort. While braking on a wet surface Ecopia tyres put up a much better result than its competition. The difference was significant enough to prove these tyres can help avoiding an accident. The
tyres also displayed immense control over wet and dry surfaces compared to the competitor’s tyres. There was certainly more traction on wet surfaces and the grip on tarmac inspired nothing but confidence. So if you are looking to replace your tyres, this is one of the safest bets you will make, be it mileage, durability, safety or performance. MI

in this global show for buses. The popularity of the bus show is expected to reverberate across the globe with similar shows being organised in 2016 in Istanbul (Turkey), Moscow (Russia), Bengaluru (India) and Beijing (China). Other fairs will be held as well, including in Medellín in Columbia, Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan and Indonesia. Didier Ramoudt, president of Busworld International says, “The world is globalising and so is the bus and coach sector. Constructors and suppliers are looking for solutions across national boundaries. Today, I see that a limited number of actors are dominating the market and are represented on a worldwide level. Everybody wants to conquer the world.”

COVER REPORT “The population is growing. It is expected that the transport will be growing exponentially as well. This year around 525,000 buses will be constructed in the entire world; by 2018 this number will already have increased to 600,000 buses and coaches. This does not only have to do with the growing population but also with the after-sales and replacement market. A lot more vehicles will have to be replaced. This opens perspectives for the constructors,” notes the president of Busworld International. Since the demand for space was even more intense than for the 2013 edition, Mieke Glorieux, Director of Busworld Kortrijk, added 3,000 square metre to the temporary pavilions, hall 8 and 9. The European Coach & Bus Week (ECW) took place from October 10 and ended with the announcement of the winners on October 14 during the Busworld press conference. All manufacturers were invited to participate with their most innovative vehicles in the two categories: bus or coach. A Busworld Academy was also highly active during Busworld Kortrijk 2015. Academy organised several high level debates, roundtables and seminars about safety, sustainability and comfort of buses and coaches.
VOLVO BUSES: For the first time ever, Volvo Buses unveiled its new electric bus in 12-metre configuration for series production. This means the company now has a complete range of electrified
buses. The new Volvo 7900 Electric runs quietly and exhaustfree and is about 80 per cent more energy-efficient than a corresponding diesel bus. Sales get under way globally in 2016. At the public-transport fair in Milan earlier this year, Volvo Buses had unveiled one of the electric concept buses that have been in operation in Gothenburg since the summer. Now the company had
taken a major step forward and had presented its new electric bus in commercial configuration, ready for the market. “Today we’re passing yet another important milestone in our drive for future sustainable transport and a cleaner, quieter urban environment. We can now offer a complete product range enabling the creation of electrified bus systems. Solutions that make it possible for all cities everywhere to step into the future,” said Hakan Agnevall, President of Volvo Buses. The Volvo 7900 Electric’s lithium-ion batteries are charged both by the energy generated whenever the vehicle brakes, and also via the mains electricity network at the route’s end stops. Each charge via the mains takes three to six minutes. Each minute of charging allows for 5-10 minutes of driving. The bus is designed for bus routes of 10-20 km. Opportunity charging at end stops creates an electric bus infrastructure whose route length is unaffected by battery size. The two-axle, 12-metre long bus has an aluminium body, three doors, a low floor and a bright and airy interior. With the launch of the Volvo 7900 Electric, Volvo Buses now offers a comprehensive range of

Busworld in Kortrijk (Belgium). The gearless in wheel hub drive from Ziehl-Abegg is now fitted as standard by several European bus manufacturers: VDL Bus & Coach (The Netherlands), Hybricon Bus Systems (Sweden), Ekova Electric (Czech Republic), Troliga (Slovakia), Lider Trading (Poland), ebe Europa (Germany). In the spring, Eckhard Schläfke, Operations Manager Public Utilities Department Münster (Germany) commissioned five electric buses into operation as part of the ZeEUS Project. How can a local authority integrate five electric vehicles into an existing fleet of diesel vehicles? The Public Utilities Department has installed quick charge stations in the Public Utilities Department depot as well as at the two bus termini. These stations use the quick charge process to recharge the batteries on the roof of the vehicles during the normal scheduled waiting period. Referring to the battery reserve, Schläfke says that “even if there is no time to charge the
battery, e.g. because of delays, the bus can continue operating”. Thanks to the charging stations being located at the termini and the efficient ZAwheel drive, the dimensions of the batteries have been kept to a minimum; the vehicle weighs hardly any more than a conventional bus Does electromobility work in cold regions? For CEO Jonas Hansson, this is not a problem. His company Hybricon Bus Systems AB builds electric city buses especially for cold regions: with extra insulated cabin and floor, heat regeneration, air curtains at the entrance, specially insulated windows, and also with the gearless in wheel hub drive from Ziehl-Abegg. “We don’t even use the Stroco heater”, says Hansson. The buses can be heated 100 percent with electricity at minus 25 degrees Celsius. “Our technology is so good and the positive experience in the north of Sweden has prompted the City of Umea to order 8 more city buses”, emphasizes Jonas Hansson.
78 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2015
After years of waiting and testing Ralf Arnold believes the hour for electric city buses has now come: “The time is ripe, the political pressure is there - and we have the right drive solution to meet the need.” In every comparison test the ZAwheel gearless in wheel hub drive is clearly the front runner in terms of noise characteristics, efficiency and operating costs. By not having any gears the ZAwheel also scores over diesel-powered vehicles and hybrid buses in terms of life-cycle costs
DAF: At Busworld Kortrijk, DAF extended its DAF Transport Efficiency programme to the bus and coach sector. This programme aims to further increase efficiency for operators. To achieve this goal, DAF Components not only supplies a complete range of reliable and economical PACCAR engines, but also a comprehensive package of services to ensure maximum vehicle availability. PRIMOVE system for electric buses in Bruges, Belgium. For electric buses, the PRIMOVE package represents a major leap forward by creating a competitive alternative to diesel and hybrid systems. It offers a unique combination of fast inductive charging, light-weight batteries and a fully-integrated propulsion system. The PRIMOVE e-mobility portfolio is not limited to buses but can be also applied to a variety of electric rail and road vehicles. For automobiles, the PRIMOVE system overcomes charging constraints with a fast, safe and automated charging process. The compact system fits into the underside of any car and requires no plugging, making e-mobility more convenient than ever. Bombardier recently announced that it has signed a nomination agreement with one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers for the serial development of the PRIMOVE 3.6 kW inductive charging solution. This partnership marks a major breakthrough for Bombardier,
growing beyond its traditional core business of public transportation into the private automobile sector.
CONTINENTAL: The international tyre manufacturer and automotive supplier Continental presented its portfolio of bus tyres, electronics, fleet management and instrumentation solutions, as well as ergonomics at Busworld in Kortrijk. Highlights included the fully configurable instrument cluster MultiViu Professional 12 and the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) ContiPressureCheck. There is a growing trend toward networked vehicles that make the driver’s life easier by displaying important information clearly, a trend which is supported by Continental’s Commercial Vehicles & Aftermarket business unit with its innovative instrument cluster, MultiViu Professional 12. The fully configurable instrument cluster has a high-resolution, 12.3-inch color TFT display, real-time capable 2D graphics, and video imaging.
In addition, Continental presented the camera systems ProViu Mirror and ProViu ASL360. ProViu Mirror offers an alternative to exterior mirrors. Two cameras are installed on each side of the vehicle. Their recordings are transmitted to two displays on the right and left of the A-pillar. The technology considerably expands the visible area compared with conventional exterior mirrors, and maximizes driving safety while simultaneously cutting fuel consumption by up to 2pc. The camera system ProViu ASL360 extends these cost and safety savings even further, by directly transferring a real-time image of objects immediately adjacent to the vehicle onto a display. As a result the risk of damage to both the vehicle itself and other objects around it is reduced since the driver’s blind spots are eliminated. This particularly facilitates cornering and turning in tight spaces. In the field of vehicle electronics, Continental also exhibited a

COVER REPORT modular driver’s workplace for urban and intercity buses that complies with VDV and EBSF standards. The modular design provides a workplace that is userfriendly and has a very flexible layout. Its components can be adapted to many different use cases. As the height and incline of the system can also be fully adapted, the new design offers bus drivers considerably more ergonomic working conditions.
ABB: ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, introduced an automated fast charging system which allows electric city buses to drive 24/7, thus enabling true zero emission bus transport in cities. With its automated rooftop connection and a typical charge time of 4–6 minutes, the system can easily be integrated in existing bus lines by installing fast chargers at end points, terminals, depots and/or intermediate stops. The modular design offering 150 kW, 300 kW or 450 kW of charging power provides any city bus with enough energy in only a few minutes to run its inner-city route continuously throughout the day. With increasing air pollution levels and a stronger public commitment to clean transportation, electric city buses offer a large opportunity to improve life in cities, while also reducing operational costs. ABB’s automated fast charging system solves the key problems for large scale adoption of zero emission electric buses: long charging times and short driving
range belong to the past. A practical solution based on international industry standards ABB’s automatic charging system is based on IEC 61851-23, the international standard for fast charging electric vehicles. This ensures the appropriate safety systems are in place, the electrical design is in accordance with regulations, and the systems architecture and working principle are supported by the wider automotive community in the future. The robust automated connection is based on a pantograph: a proven system used commonly on trains, trams and metros, but mounted in inverted position on a stylish infrastructure pole. When a bus arrives at the charging stop, wireless communication will be established between bus and charger and the pantograph will

come down automatically. After all safety checks are performed the system will provide the bus with a powerful fast recharge. ABB’s fast charging system was shown to the public for the first time in Kortrijk, Belgium at the Busworld 2015 show, where ABB showcased multiple innovative technologies for public transport.
ZF FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG: ZF Friedrichshafen AG presented its extensive product portfolio for midibuses, city buses, and coaches. The innovations included the reengineered ZFEcoLife automatic transmission which now features the start/stop function. Fuel savings of up to ten percent can be achieved with this function alone in conventional diesel city buses. An additional electric motor in the driveline is not necessary and reduces thus costs and installation space. The further development of the AVE 130 electric portal axle is a suitable solution for electrically driven buses. With its product range, the technology company completely covers the demands of current and future bus applications. For ZF, automotive megatrends like efficiency, safety, and automated driving play an as important role as social and political long-term
factors or the increase of comfort for drivers and passengers when developing new products.
MAN: At the Busworld, MAN showcased its extensive expertise in the bus sector. Whether it is a luxury coach with a bistro upgrade or an applicationoptimised city bus and intercity bus - individuality, innovation and interactivity are reflected in the MAN product range. Following its premier at MAN BusDays 2015 in Ankara, the MAN Lion’s Intercity was showcased for the first time at Busworld. The MAN Lion’s Intercity has been adapted without compromise for use in long distance transport and shuttle services and as a robust school bus, combining first class comfort with both a high level of functionality and outstanding safety in the very best MAN quality. The vehicle sets standards not just with its striking, aerodynamically-optimised design and its excellent driving characteristics, but above all with its efficient fuel consumption and low life-cycle costs. The concept behind the low total cost of ownership is the consistent use of light weight components. Good aerodynamics and ease of servicing and repair also contribute to the low operating costs. Call for use of galvanized steel in Indian auto industry In order to address the grave problem of corrosion in the country, especially in vehicles and also those that operate in and around the coastal areas of the country, the International Zinc Association (IZA), in a joint initiative with IIT-Mumbai and Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd organised an interactive session to raise awareness of the benefits of galvanized steel in the Indian automotive industry. “Hindustan Zinc lends full support to IZA to resolve this grave problem of corrosion in India. India loses around 5pcof GDP each ear in corrosion losses. As a sustainable organisation we believe that corrosion mitigation will lead to sustainable vehicles and infrastructure for the future generations and at the same time bring down GDP loss to the economy” said Vikas Sharma, COO (Smelters), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. Galvanized steel primarily has two distinct benefits—first, it protects the steel from corrosive attack acting as a continuous and lasting shield between steel and the atmosphere. Secondly, it acts as a galvanic protector, sacrificing itself slowly in the presence of
www.motownindia.com
corrosive agents. “Zinc is an amazing corrosion protector because of its sacrificial properties”, said Prof. Khanna from IIT Mumbai, who has steered a study on corrosion in cars in Mumbai. The Professor stated that Indian cars which usually use coated steels, give the look and feel of international cars but not all cars provide perforation warranties, which is the right of the customer. Apart from these, use of Galvanized Advanced High Strength Steels helps in the reduction of car body weight, emissions and improves safety performance along with fuel efficiency, which is in line with the requirement of the new age cars for Indian roads. Indian car makers use galvanized steel for the body panels, but only for the export models. Galvanized steel has been used for decades across Europe, North America, Japan and South Korea for body panels. The wide use is mainly owing to the regulatory frameworks in the developed economies. “The overall benefit to the automaker is expected to more than offset the additional cost towards galvanizing” said Kenneth De Souza, Consultant (Canada)
Officials of International Zinc Association, Hindustan Zinc and IIT Mumbai during an interactive session in New Delhi International Zinc Association, adding that emissions of a vehicle are expected to reduce as it gets lighter and lighter. The sixth largest car manufacturer in the world, India is a key market for the automotive sector. Steady economic growth and robust consumption trends make it one of the most attractive regions for auto companies to launch their products and align the designs with international models. A study by IIT Bombay proved that of the 500 odd cars surveyed, four major corroded areas merged: bonnet, boot, rocker and door panels. The IZA has set up an International Galvanized Auto Body Partnership (GAP), in collaboration of the zinc, steel and automobile industries aligned in support of the market for
advanced corrosion-resistant sheet steels in automobiles. The program aims to expand performance of galvanized advanced high strength steels through process improvements in automotive galvanizing lines and extending capabilities of zincbased coatings. Eighty percent of the GAP programme funding comes from the steel industry, whose involvement in the design and direction of the program leads to direct transfer of results to the automotive industry. Many advanced vehicle designs are now making use of GAP program results. According to experts, the usage of high strength galvanized steel has several benefits including low maintenance, anti-perforation warranties or corrosion resistant materials are quite common.

Magneti Marelli new robotized gearbox plant inaugurated Magneti Marelli, through its ‘Magneti Marelli Powertrain India Private Ltd.’ joint venture (JV between Magneti Marelli, Maruti Suzuki and Suzuki Motor Company in force since 2007), recently inaugurated a new industrial site for the production of robotized gearboxes for automobiles, also called AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). The plant is located in Manesar, near Gurgaon, just a few kilometres from New Delhi, in the same area that is home to the manufacturing facility dedicated to the production of powertrain electronic control units. The new plant covers a total surface area of 7,500 square metres, which houses the production lines and offices. When fully operational, the plant will employ approximately 115 people and will have a production capacity of 280,000 robotized gearbox kits
per year. The facility was created to address the growing market success that the AMT component has had in India over the past two years and to meet the demand from local carmakers regarding additional future implementations. Examples of successful car models currently equipped with the Magneti Marelli AMT gearbox in India include Maruti Celerio, Maruti Alto, Tata Nano and Tata Zest. The reason behind the success of the AMT on the Indian market is due to the particularly positive perception on the part of customers and end consumers with respect to the specific and distinctive characteristics of the solution. In fact, the AMT is an example of a value-added yet cost effective technological solution which, automating a simple manual transmission with an electro-hydraulic “add-on” device, combines driving
comfort, optimisation of fuel consumption and emissions, as well as containment of industrial costs. The technology is based on the use of an electronic control unit combined with an electrohydraulic system that controls the use of the clutch when changing gears, allowing the driver to shift gears without the use of the clutch, either sequentially or in a fully automatic way. The electronic optimisation of the ATM gearbox also leads to reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to vehicles with standard automatic and manual transmissions. The production facility in Manesar dedicated to the AMT component relies on advanced production systems and was built with a strong focus on respect for the environment. The main building, in fact, has been designed to facilitate the maximum diffusion of natural light
during the day without the use of artificial lighting, while at night light will be ensured thanks to the use of solar panels powering low energy consumption LED light bulbs. Moreover, the exterior design minimises wind pressure, improving the internal ventilation. Finally, the building is equipped with a system for the collection of rain water and for waste management. The full Magneti Marelli industrial perimeter is present in the country, with seven plants and a research and development centre in the New Delhi area, operating in the Powertrain, Electronic Systems, Exhaust Systems and Suspension Systems sectors; three plants and a research and development centre in the Pune area operating in the Lighting, Powertrain, Exhaust Systems and Shock Absorbers sectors; and a plant in the Chennai area, operating in the Exhaust Systems sector.

Bosch makes urban traffic safer for pedestrians Traffic in cities is often congested and unpredictable. Cars share the streets with bicycles, motorcycles, trucks, and buses. In a country like India, the traffic is even worse. Cars even share the streets with jaywalkers, cows, stray dogs, three-wheelers, juggads and what not. It is not unusual to see cars double parked and pedestrians stepping out into the road without warning. The prospect of vehicles negotiating these hazards completely autonomously is almost unimaginable. “Autonomous driving is coming to cities, too. The level of automation is being gradually increased, starting out with driver assistance systems,” says Dr. Dietrich Manstetten, who works in research and advance engineering at Robert Bosch GmbH. Together with his colleague Dr. Lutz Bürkle and a team of 11 Bosch researchers, he is working on the technology needed to achieve this as part of the UR:BAN research initiative. The researchers have made great progress: “One of the things we’ve taught the cars is to predict what is going to happen next, and help drivers take evasive action whenever there is a threat of collision with a pedestrian,” Bürkle says. UR:BAN (acronym from the German for urban space: user-

friendly assistance systems and network management) is a publicly funded joint project. It brings together 31 partners from the automotive, automotive-supply, electronics, communications, and software industries, as well as universities, research institutes, and cities. EVASIVE STEERING SUPPORT PREVENTS UP TO 58PC OF COLLISIONS WITH PEDESTRIANS A prerequisite for automated driving functions is to have sensors that reliably monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. “Only when we know what’s going on around the car can we determine the correct driving strategy,” Bürkle says. One component Bosch relies on for environment recognition is its stereo video camera, which can already be found in production vehicles. Mounted behind the windshield near the rear-view mirror, the
camera monitors the area to the front of the test vehicle, and relays this information to a computer in the trunk. This computer analyzes the data more than ten times a second. But Bosch does not stop there. “Using smart algorithms, we get the computer to calculate how the environment is changing and where objects are headed,” Bürkle says. In other words, the Bosch technology not only detects the current position of pedestrians and cyclists, but also predicts where they will be in a second’s time. This presents new opportunities for pedestrian protection. Based on this, the Bosch researchers have developed an assistance system that intervenes to prevent a collision with a pedestrian. At vehicle speeds up to 50 kmph, the system helps drivers brake and take evasive
action. If braking alone is no longer enough to prevent a collision with a pedestrian who suddenly walks out in front of the car, the assistant instantaneously computes an evasive manoeuvre. As soon as drivers start using the steering wheel to take evasive action, the system kicks in to support the steering manoeuvre. “According to our studies, provided the driver reacts at least half a second before a potential collision, the assistance system can help avoid it in 58 pc of cases,” Bürkle says. But it is even better to avoid situations such as this in the first place. Critical situations arise when drivers are distracted and not looking at the road. Bosch’s solution to this is called driver observation. “By monitoring drivers’ line of sight, tiny cameras in the vehicle’s interior can tell whether their eyes are on the road,” Manstetten says. This makes it possible to warn distracted drivers in good time before the traffic situation becomes risky. In this context, Bosch believes that it helps to place indicators in the instrument clusters or an LED display on the dashboard directly in the driver’s field of vision.
