iwali, the festival of lights, always bodes well for the Indian vehicle industry. Sales peak during this time and one always sees new launches or at least gets to hear about them. We got an opportunity to test drive some fascinating machines like the
Mahindra e20Plus electric car, Honda Accord Hybrid, Tata Hexa and the Volvo S90. Among them, we felt that the Tata Hexa deserves to be on the cover. The reason is simple. Tata Motors has been trying to make a good product for a long, long time and they have finally managed to get its act together with the Hexa. Not that products like the Tiago and others are bad, it’s just that the company is simply getting better in making good cars. Just as we were going to press, we got the news that Ratan Tata is back as Interim Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company for the Tata group companies. The Tata Sons Board decided to replace young Cyrus Mistry as its chairman. A team within Tata Sons will decide upon a new Chairman within four months. Speculations were rife that Mistry had not performed well and that he was ousted from his position. After a day or so, Cyrus Mistry shot off a letter to the Board spilling out a can of worms (a copy of the mail is with Motown India). Will all these developments in Tata Group turn ugly? Time will tell. Apart from a lot of first drive reports on cars, we also have crisp reports on the Intermot show held in Germany on motorcycles and the Paris Motor Show 2016. Both these shows were held early October 2016. In the B2B section, we have interviewed Mahesh Babu S, CEO, Mahindra Electric. His interview appears in the “Bossman Speaks” section. Enjoy browsing through our latest issue. Also, do keep yourself informed with news on our website www.motownindia.com and also see all the action on the Motown India youtube channel!

ata Motors began work on the Hexa a few years back. They tested it over eight hundred thousand kilometers, in temperatures ranging from minus twenty degrees to upwards of fifty degrees Celsius, over three continents and varied terrains.

The Hexa is not just another premium utility vehicle; it is symbolic of a giant awakening from its slumber. We tested the Hexa over different terrains across the state of Telangana and the results to come were breathtaking. Just one glance at the Hexa is enough to reveal that Tata has poured their heart and soul into this one! The proportions do remind
me of the Aria. However, the Hexa sports a much more chiseled and macho look. You find crisp and clear lines running seamlessly along the vehicle and the overall design boasts of how far Tata has come and the direction in which they are headed. Tata’s Impact design philosophy has seen multiple inputs from teams within India and from other

ENING parts of the globe. The Hexa in its looks and proportions is very contemporary and speaks of class, finesse and power. It sports LED DRLs, Projector headlamps, ample of chrome all around, smart use of plastic cladding and just a touch of piano black finish. When I stepped into the Hexa, I was greeted with a rather pleasant surprise! The design, quality of materials, level of finishing

and refinement has just received an extreme overhaul, unlike what Tata products have so far been associated with. The cabin is feature rich and luxurious throughout its spaces. In terms of tech, the Hexa gets a 5 inch USB, AUX and bluetooth enabled and touch screen infotainment setup which also doubles up as a reverse parking camera. We felt a bigger screen could definitely have been a plus. It
also gets power adjustable and retractable ORVMs, a multifunction steering wheel, voice commands, cruise control, 10 speaker JBL audio setup, multiple app suite for controlling various applications such as music and mood lighting via a mobile device. The Hexa also gets rain sensing wipers and automatic headlamps with a follow me home function as well.

WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
Being a utility vehicle, the Hexa is extremely practical as well, it has ample of space for seating seven adults, it gets AC vents for all 3 seating rows and USB slots for charging mobile phones and other devices as well. The 60:40 split for the second row increases practicality. However to access the third row one has to put in a little effort as the second row seat does not get a one touch tumble option. The second row also gets a centre arm rest which also doubles up as a couple holder, the Hexa gets ample of cubby holes and storage spaces apart from a cooling box as well. The boot of the Hexa is small with only 120 litres of storage space but if you drop down the last 2 rows then you get close to 671 litres of storage space. Tata however has included a steering which is adjustable for height but not reach, buyers however get an 8-way adjustable driver seat. At the heart of the Hexa is a 2.2 litre, 4-cylinder, turbo charged, Varicor 400 diesel mill, which is capable of putting out 153.8hp at 4000rpm and 400Nm of torque from 1700-2700rpm. When moving off from standstill the engine feels quite refined
and powerful. Even when you floor the accelerator pedal it does not take too much time to get going, considering the mammoth proportions of the UV. The engine has been mated to a 6 speed manual gear box with a 6-speed auto box also on offer. The Hexa gobbles up the first two gears rather quickly and the low range torque can really push you back in your seat. On the manual, shifts are crisp and feel chunky, while on the automatic they feel seamless and smooth. The Automatic also gets a sports mode which completely redefined my impression of the Hexa. Up until I stroked the gear lever into sports mode, I presumed this to be a big burly Tata SUV. But once I floored the pedal in sports mode the Hexa just became menacingly quick. The Hexa also gets 4 different drive modes (Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road) which come with the manual

While navigating through tough terrain and over broken roads, even at high speeds, the Hexa just simply felt planted and gave me a great sense of confidence. The ESP kicks in just at the right time and can bring the vehicle back to a correct line in case of a fault. We estimate the Hexa to

If Tata has played it right so far, it would seem they will get the price right as well. In our opinion the base model of the Hexa should cost you between Rs.12-13 lakh (exshowroom Delhi) which we feel is a sweet deal! MI

here was a personal note from one of the senior officials of Volvo Auto India that greeted me when I reached Jodhpur in the state of Rajasthan for test driving the new Volvo S90 sedan. In his note he described the new Volvo S90 car as the “Queen on wheels in this land of Maharajas”. I remember as a child I used to read about Queens and Kings and the lives of opulence they led. Queens were aristocratic, rich, blue blooded, powerful, beautiful and at times seductive too. We drove the Volvo Queen on four wheels around in the city and got to know a lot about her temperament. The new Volvo S90 is so much about fine styling and opulence. Whether you end up being chauffeured around (like most affluent Indians do) or driving the car all by yourself (like many adventurous Indians do), the car does not disappoint you. If one were to describe this car in one word, I would choose the word “Elegance”. The Swedish maker (with Chinese owners) of stylish SUVs like the XC60 and XC90, is now beginning to focus a lot on the sedan segment in the country. When the S80 was taken off the list of vehicles by Volvo, everybody waited for a good sedan from this Swedish car maker. Finally, their answer in the form of S90 has come as a pleasant surprise. Even though the car has not been official launched in the country, though bookings are open, the car is expected to give several of its German competitors a run for their money. The moment I began driving the car and exploring and experiencing its features, both technical and otherwise, I was convinced that this vehicle was built with a purpose. The purpose was simple—to give its occupants great ride quality, comfort, safety, all put together with loads of indulgence. Yes, this car does not have paddle shifters, this car has a low ground clearance, and this car does not have….. well, it has almost everything else to make your ride so perfect. On the looks front, this car has been designed and styled so perfectly. It’s like asking Charlize Theron to pose for you in her bare essentials. This car is not about a Kim Kardashian, because that’s pure trouble! The front of the car has all the oomph. Like a la Maserati, the grille of this car is absolutely stunning. The 23 vertical slats are fixed as though they are floating in air. It gives a three dimensional look in the front. The bold Volvo badge with diagonal strips on either side from tip to tip, gives it a stamp of authority. The almost wrap around elongated LED headlamps and the hammer shaped LED lights in these, along with the fog lamps enhance the looks of the car. These LED lights come with automatic bending. There is also a provision for headlight high pressure cleaning. The rear is equally well designed with tail lamps on either side stretching itself in a bracket shape into the boot lid or tail gate. The dual integrated tail lamps add to the good looks in the rear. The design flow from front to rear is extremely aerodynamic, suggesting a body structure that leaves a lot of space for the occupants, especially the ones in the rear seat. After all, who wouldn’t love to be chauffeured in this elegant car? Just a minute please. Did I just say chauffeured? Let me

also add to that. Who wouldn’t love to drive this car? Yes, this car is brilliant to drive too. The interiors are luxurious and aesthetic. The dual tone colour on the steering wheel, the dark coloured leather dash with a single neat stitch, the Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, power adjustable driver and passenger seats, 4 way power adjustable lumbar support, power fold of rear back rest from tailgate opening, power folding rear headrests are some of the features that pamper you instantly. adequate storage spaces for your cups and water bottles. The car has a Bowers and Wilkins 19 speakers audio system. While the tail gate can be opened with your key and a button inside, it can also be opened by moving your foot under the boot area where a sensor picks up the motion to automatically open your tailgate/boot lid so that you can put any heavy stuff you are carrying in your hands into the boot. It’s when you gently twist the knob on the floor console that the engine comes alive and then it’s a journey that is made perfect by 8-speed automatic transmission mated to the Volvo D4 diesel engine that produces 190hp @ 4250rpm. Peak torque of 400Nm is achieved in the range of 1740-2520rpm. The

moment you put the vehicle in Drive mode, the vehicle accelerates and one can feel the turbo kick in immediately after the 1000 rpm. The early turbo response is what makes the car quick on its feet. From the floor console, if one were to scroll a button, you can choose the various modes of driving— Eco, Comfort and Dynamic. Like the words suggest, the vehicle shows its furious side in the Dynamic mode. The suspensions of the vehicle are absolutely stunning. The air suspension at the rear and double wishbone in front make the car glide softly over potholes and bad roads. Mind you, I am not talking about craters and ditches! While NVH levels are a

like airbags, inflatable curtains, emergency brake assist, EBA, etc. All put together, the Volvo S90 offers a right mix of driving and ride satisfaction packaged brilliantly in Pure Elegance. The car will be offered in a single variant. After all, is she not the queen on wheels? MI

generation Honda Accord, is a mix of high end engine technology wrapped so efficiently with delicate green cover. Yes, this is the Honda Accord Hybrid and is powered by a 2.0 litre Atkinson cycle DOHC 16 valves i-VTEC engine along with an Intelligent Multi-mode Drive (i-MMD) 2-motor hybrid system. By offering an efficient hybrid system in this
car, Honda is making it clear that it is indeed pursuing its goal to make their vehicles as green as possible. Moreover, with a hybrid system in place, they have ensured a fair mix of engine power and good fuel efficiency. Together the internal combustion engine and the hybrid system produce a combined output of 212hp with a fuel efficiency of 23.1kmpl.

The car mind you is not just about a green revolution; rather it’s also about neat styling, pampered seating, savvy electronics and decent driving abilities. Let’s talk about the engine first because that is what is radically new in this Accord. Why did Honda go for an Atkinson cycle engine? The Atkinson cycle has made a comeback thanks to hybrids. But how exactly does it work? Please remember that this Atkinson cycle engine is far different from what James Atkinson developed in 1882. Back then it was a complicated mechanical system in use but today with loads of electronics and software, the same purpose is met---to keep the engine valve open longer while the piston is in action so as to ensure increase in the cylinder’s displacement. It’s ideal for a hybrid engine. This old technology has been given a modern alteration like in this Accord where the electric
www.motownindia.com
Power & Torque 181.48hp/ 50006000rpm / 143hp@ 6200 rpm (combined 212hp) 315Nm @ 0-2000 / 175 Nm@4000
motor helps to overcome the Atkinson’s shortcomings on the power front without compromising on fuel efficiency. Okay, now back to the engine. The Honda’s i-MMD uses a two motor hybrid system with three operating modes—EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive. Most of the time when the vehicle is being driven it is on Hybrid Drive where the gasoline engine powers the electric generator motor which in turn provides power to the lithium ion batteries thereby setting off the electric propulsion motor to swing into action. Depending on the speeds the electric propulsion motor and the petrol engine take turns to power the drive wheels through the propulsion motor. So the duo works as series hybrid. The EV mode is 100pc electric motor dependent and comes into action when you are starting from stop and cruising at gentle speeds. You can lock the vehicle in EV mode

but then you barely get a straight km thereafter on pure EV mode. Of course when braking, the EV mode is much in use. The petrol engine is off during the EV mode and is decoupled from the drive train to reduce friction. The Engine Drive mode comes into play as speeds increase and any shortcoming from the Atkinson cycle engine is made up by the electric motor drive. Here the system works as a parallel hybrid. To generate a sportier response from the engine one can engage the Sport Mode and you can experience rapid acceleration. For more sedate and responsible driving one can opt for the ECON mode where throttle response is very gradual and focus is more on fuel efficiency. The Honda Accord has an Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) and mind you unlike a conventional CVT, it uses two motors for driving and generating power. Thus depending on the
NOVEMBER 2016 | MOTOWN INDIA | 27
WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
speeds it optimally controls the petrol engine and electric motor rotation ensuring decent power and fuel efficiency. This efficiency is further enhanced by the Accord Hybrid’s electric servo brake system which provides regenerative braking and which in turn charges the battery. Driving the car is made easy and safe with features like ABS with electronic brake distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability assist with traction control and motion adaptive electric power steering which not only stabilizes vehicles under braking but mitigates understeer and oversteer. Overall the car may be brilliant with its efficient hybrid system, but I felt it was more like a well behaved school boy, one of those studious guys who never ever gets into trouble. But a mode like the Sport mode gets this car all charged up. A feature I found very interesting in the car is the lane watch feature which enhances the driver’s view of side traffic. There is a tiny camera on the side mirror which can be manually or automatically activated when a driver signals left. The video display on the screen shows what is behind you. I wish there was a camera in the right ORVM too, With erratic traffic conditions all over India, this feature can be of great help. This definitely helps on the safety front, apart from the airbags like front ones, front side ones and side curtain

ones add to the safety of the occupants.
EXTERIOR The new Honda Accord Hybrid is not all about boring science classes, rather it’s quite sporty to look at with a fair amount of sophistication. The front fascia with its sharp styling, the large intake like meshed areas house new standard LED fog lights. In fact the headlights too are LED with Led daytime running lights and tail lights. The hood has a neat contour and the front grille is a lot pronounced. While the front is quite chic, the rear too has its fair share of good looks with a sharply sculpted rear bumper fascia and new LED taillight design. Not to miss are the blue accents on the front grille headlights and tail lights and the Hybrid badging. Adding to the good looks are the body coloured outside rear view mirror with side turn indicators, chrome front grille, body coloured sill garnish and chrome outer handles. The car sits on 8 inches sporty alloy wheels and it’s even got a unique design. There’s an electric sunroof with tilt feature, shark fin roof antennae and integrated trunk spoiler. The Honda Accord Hybrid is so well styled that it can be mistaken for a German luxury car!
INTERIORS Interiors are where you get into a world of sophistication. But before that I need to point
out that this car comes with remote engine start. This feature makes loads of sense in this country of ours with extreme climates when you want the air con on and the interiors cool before you step in or the heater on and interiors warm. All I need to do is to take the key fob and press the Lock button and then hold the engine button for a second. The Accord hazard lights will flash telling you that the signal has gone through. When you start the engine this way, the wipers, lighting and audio systems remain off and the security system remains set. The engine remains on for ten minutes after which it shuts off but you can extend it for another 10 minutes by the same procedure. Once you get into a car with the right temperature, then all one has to do is apply the brake and press the Start button which turns on all the other systems in the vehicle which were earlier shut off. As for entering the car, it’s remote keyless entry and with the key in your pocket you can walk up to the car and open it by touching the door handle. Once seated you are treated to plush leather upholstery with wood grain accents. When you are in the driver’s seat you get to see a large analog instrumentation and a 7.7 inch colour multi information display. This provides a range of information and trip computer functions. Beneath this is the 7 inch touch screen display

audio system. This car has a 360 watt 7-speaker audio system with subwoofer and tweeters. The system supports CD/ DVD playback / HDMI connectivity and USB interface that allow iPods, Iphones or flash drives to be connected. Your smartphone experience is enhanced by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features. Features like satellite linked navigation system with voice recognition and voice activation features add a lot of fun and convenience to the driver. The wrapped 4-spoke steering wheel comes with some controls that are more frequently used. Inside the cabin is quite roomy and the seat quite padded and comfortable. The head rests have soft padding for a lot of comfort. The front head rests are of a size to afford rear passenger a better view forward. There is ample storage space and the centre console too doubles up to provide more of that. There’s a USB port, a 12Volt power outlet in front of the console and another 12 volt is positioned inside the console. The lid doubles up as a neat arm rest. Each door has a bottle holder and storage space. As for the rear seats,
www.motownindia.com
it has a padded centre armrest with dual cupholders. The arm rest can be pushed back in place when not needed. Coming to the boot, it’s spacious and easy to access and the floor is flat here so it’s easy to place and remove large pieces of luggage. All I can say is that the new Honda hybrid is not a boring science fiction creation, rather it is a well thought car that provides fun, comfort and safe driving. MI

Can save you, your children, your grandchildren and the entire posterity from the ugly and dangerous menace of pollution? Yes, yes, yes! Ever since the Mahindras bought over Chetan Maini’s Reva Electric and promoted a redesigned Mahindra e20 electric car in the Indian market, it received a lukewarm response in the country. While the government sermonised on cleaning the environment, they really did nothing concrete to encourage electric vehicle manufacturers. As for ordinary folks like you and me, nobody gave a serious look at the electric vehicle. It neither looked like the Model S or the Model X from the Tesla factory and either did it drive furiously like the American car. The e20 was a SPECIFICATIONS

of space and merrily moves around without a fuss. Unlike its predecessor, the e20 Plus is finally what we can call a car. It’s got four doors and one hatch. Everything about the new e20Plus is fresh as a daisy. The looks have been vastly improved by a new smart grille, stylish integrated rear spoiler, spacious interiors, chrome accents, alloy wheels and a lot more changes on the technology front. The car now comes in four variants: P2, P4, P6 and P8. While the P2 is the 48V Fleet model, the P4 is the 48V Base, the P6 is the 48V Top model and the P8 is the 72V Top model. We got our hands on the P8. Now let me narrate my honest drive experience.
We all have grown up experiencing our share of yelling and noise. Whether it was yelling we received from our teachers, our parents, our spouses, or yelling at our children or the noise from the pressure cooker in the kitchen or the high pitched sound from the vacuum cleaner or the fine grunt from the internal combustion engine...driving a silent vehicle is like going back to the era of silent movies. The moment I shifted the automatic gear to the Drive mode, off went this silent machine like a boat on sails. I was pleasantly surprised by the instant torque the direct drive machine generated. The 3 phase AC induction motors produce a whopping torque of

91Nm@2500 rpm. There is also decent peak power at 30Kw (40hp)@3500rpm. Because of regenerative braking, a bit of charging happens each time you decelerate. The interiors are indeed spacious in this small car. The car’s overall dimensions have undergone a minor change. The car now has a length of 3590mm, a width of 1575 mm and a height of 1585mm with a ground clearance of 170mm. There is a boot space of 135 litres which can accommodate a good amount of your personal luggage. The rear seats can be folded too. The leg room for occupants both in front and rear is more than adequate and so is the head room for tall
passengers. Since the car does not have an engine and runs on lithium ion batteries, the space under the bonnet is used to store the spare tyre and tools for the car. The good thing is that the car can be driven for around 140km on a single charge and is maintenance free up to five years. The company is offering three years / 60,000km warranty on the e20 Plus. While the car can be fully charged in 9 hours, there is a provision to quickly charge it in 90 minutes (the car will be charged up to 95pc). Finding a charging point could be the real issue and not the charging time! The e20 Plus now comes with a new Blaupunkt android

infotainment system. For those savvy with mobile phones and technology, one can explore connectivity through smartphone app. Remote diagnostics too can be attempted through telematics. While driving the vehicle was as simple as blowing in the wind, the car can be improved on few fronts. A chunkier steering wheel would have given a good feel to the driving experience. Also, while the air-conditioner performed brilliantly, what needs to be fine tuned are the knobs on the dash. The dash too in

the e20 Plus could have been more tastefully done. So did I miss the IC engine? Yes, because that’s what gets driving all charged up. But then since electric ally driven vehicles are getting better by the day, and speeds too are seeing a lot of improvement, I personally feel the new e20 or the e20Plus is a must buy for a family. It’s time we said no to the Patiala peg and redefine the term “One for the road” by having an e20 Plus in your personal garage. MI

makes it a deadly combination of practicality and fun. You tend to admire it for its rugged and muscular stance. The vehicle may be huge in size with a wide track and long wheelbase, but it’s got a low centre of gravity ensuring minimal body roll. Adding to its good looks are the skid plates with engine bottom guard and the vehicle sits on smart 16 inches alloy wheels. The vehicle is aerodynamically shaped for low drag coefficient. It also comes with large electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs with turn signal indicators. The projector headlamps, the roof rails and chrome highlights together enhance the styling of the vehicle. Not to miss are the 4X4 decals on the sides of the vehicle. This twin cabin can seat at least four to five adults with great comfort. It has a wrap around 6-way adjustable driver seat. The area around the dash has a great look and feel about it. But the moment we changed the knob setting to 4H, the 4X4 genius came alive and the tyres gathered the right traction to move ahead. It has a shift on fly 4X4 feature that enables you to move to either 4H or 4L, depending on the terrain and get back to 2WD when required so. The hydraulic power assisted steering felt a lot tough but again I was not complaining, What’s life without a bit of nudge here and there. With so much of electronics embedded in cars these days, I feel that good old driving has lost its charm. But with the V-Cross, you have none of that. There is a perfect balance between the
modern and the rugged. As we tossed the mammoth vehicle on the narrow track, we noticed that the body roll was very minimal and the soft suspension gave the comfort of a passenger car. The moment you step on the accelerator, the engine lunges forward and the turbo kicks in pretty early. All in all, the V-Cross is a vehicle that defines its own path. It’s macho styling and definitely handsome looks, offer the perfect blend of comfort, practicality and value for money. At around the Rs 13 lakh price, it’s a 4X4 you cannot ignore at all. hange is one of the most essential cogs in the wheel of evolution; some may be drastic while others subtle. But if any change is not meaningful, it hardly ever leaves an impact. Honda is one such manufacturer which has made a meaningful change in its recently launched Brio hatchback. The Brio has received
a facelift which incorporates subtle modifications in its style and gives the cute hatch a much needed makeover. At first glance it may seem rather similar to the previous version but once you get closer a redesigned bumper and front grill catches the eye. The bumper looks sportier than before and gets subtle bulges and angles. A blacked out single wing front

grill with chrome finish on the lower lip adds a bit of class to this already chic looking hatch. At the rear, the tail lamp cluster has received an update and the Brio also gets a tailgate spoiler with an LED stop lamp. The biggest change, however, is on the inside where the cabin looks much more contemporary and carries a rather premium appeal. The dash has received a major
overhaul and when compared to the dated version on the outgoing model it looks quite up market. Subtle accents of matt silver finish run along the dashboard, the audio unit is housed in a high gloss finish case which looks good but is prone to fingerprints. The Brio also gets an all black fabric interior option as well as a beige colour tone which comes as standard. The fit and finish on

The Brio gets an automatic air conditioning unit with digital controls and a decent amount of cubby holes and storage spaces. The hatch is powered by the same 1.2 litre, 4 cylinder, petrol i-VTEC engine which produces 86.6bhp at 6000rpm and 109NM of torque at 4500rpm. The meat of power lies high up in the band and you can feel the surge of power once you hit 4000 on the rev meter. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with a 5-speed automatic also on offer. We got our hands on the automatic variant of the Brio and the first thought to cross my mind was “This probably one of the most practical and city smart hatchbacks I have driven. The gear shifts are smooth and the linear power delivery makes the drive quite pleasurable. Despite getting stuck in some bumper to bumper traffic, I was quite comfy and at peace behind the wheel. The mechanicals on the Brio have not seen an update and remain the same as the previous version. In terms of practicality the Brio in its manual transmission variant returns close to 16kmpl while the automatic variant returns 12 to 13kmpl in the city. The Brio comes with a McPherson Strut in the front and Torsion beam in the rear, the hatch glides over bad roads thanks to a well tuned suspension and one can expect a rather comfy ride. Braking on the Brio is progressive and reliable as well. This is definitely a city smart

ack in the 80s and 90s people used to look up to rockstars as icons, during the early 2000s it was the reign of pop stars and now people look up to rappers and DJs for their style statement. It was only befitting for Indian Yamaha Motor to rope in Badshah, the famous Punjabi rapper to endorse their stylish new iteration of the Cygnus Ray Z - the Cygnus Ray ZR. But is the Ray ZR only about bling or does it perform as well? First things first, the Cygnus Ray ZR looks full of swag. The bold and chiseled design up front looks intimidating. The headlamp and turn indicators which used to be together in the earlier version have now been separated to give them a more pronounced look. There is also an increased distance between the front fender and the mud guard to give it a sportier look. The bold and stylish
design continues on the side as well. You get the letters ZR printed in a big bold font along with the words ‘Next Generation’ and ‘Hi-Tech Performance’. Although the rear of the Ray ZR looks good but when compared to the front and the side it looks sort of simple. The sporty looking graphics all over really sell this as a scooty that designed to be a looker. Coming to the performance the Ray ZR has a 113cc single cylinder engine the puts out 7.2hp at 7500rpm and 8.1Nm of torque at 5000rpm. While these figures might not sound too extraordinary, they get the job done. Cruising around the city is relaxing and this scooty will be used mostly for that. Even on highways this is a good and stable ride. I, being extremely light weight (close to 55kgs), was able to take the Ray ZR to a top speed of around 85kmph but for people with more weight this will

still go upto 80kmph. The Ray ZR also returns a fuel efficiency of 66kmpl. One of my favorite aspects of this scooty are the 90/100 10inch tyres. These are tubeless tyres and come with 6-spoke alloy wheels. They along with the way the scooty has been designed, provide a great amount of balance and stability. I felt confident while taking sharp corners. The scooty even manages to keep its balance for a few seconds even after you bring it to a complete halt. The suspension setup consists of a telescopic fork in the front and a single swing in the rear. While the suspension is stiff it does manage to soak in a lot of the smaller bumps. It is just the bigger ones that hit you a bit hard. The Cygnus Ray ZR comes with a front disc brake variant and we reviewed the same. The 170mm disc is good enough for this scooty and can bring you to a halt in case of panic braking. The rear drum also works well and feels gradual. The analogue 3D meter console mounted atop the handlebar also ups the level of swag. There are four section, one houses the speedometer, the one above it has a meter for fuel and on either side you have the turn indicator and high beam indicator. While we liked how the meter console looks, we still think that a digital meter would have done more justice to the scooty. The switch gear is within reach and the fit and finish is fantastic. loose or rickety parts. The seat on the Ray ZR is long enough for two people to sit comfortably and the foot board also provides enough space for tall people to sit comfortably and have enough space for their legs. Under the seat you get 21 litres of storage and it is enough for most conditions however it cannot accommodate a full sized helmet. You also get the fuel lid placed at the rear of the under seat area. The drum variant of the Cygnus Ray ZR is priced at Rs 52,000 ex showroom Delhi and the disc brake variant comes at for Rs 54,500 ex-showroom Delhi. For the style quotient and stable performance that the Ray ZR offers, we feel that this price is justified. MI

recently there has been a new sect of people who are somewhere in the middle, who want a bit of both worlds. This has resulted in the shift in focus towards the 150cc segment. Making their entry in this segment is Hero MotoCorp and what better way to show up with a bang than calling their product
‘Achiever 150’! Look-wise the new Achiever 150 will remind you quite a lot of the older version of the bike. While this may be liked by some for the nostalgia it brings along, others might call it somewhat dated. Say what you want but the new Achiever definitely looks
smart and bold, the solid color with minimalistic graphics gives it a clean look. The headlamp also looks sharp along with the new side indicators. The tail-lamp is a looker for sure. The Achiever comes in three colors - Noble Black, Fiery Red and Valor Grey. While the looks would be

debated upon, the performance is no doubt solid! It houses a 150 cc engine that is now BSIV compliant and produces 13.5hp and 12.8Nm of torque. Though we only got to ride the bike on a small track made of some uneven stones at the IG Stadium, it was apparent to me that this bike can perform when asked to. Give it the slightest hint that you want to go fast and it will comply readily. The peak power & torque come not too far towards the end so you can be sure that this bike can save you in traffic conditions and when you need to perform that quick overtake. Although when you cross the 60kmph mark the acceleration is not the same as it is in the lower speeds but that is not too much of a problem. Both the tyres are tubeless which is good but we wished that the rear tyre was a bit beefier to provide some more grip as the bike seemed to float and slip a little when taking sharp corners at high speeds. Hero has packed a few things in the Achiever 150 that make it a standout in the 150cc segment. These include Automatic Headlight On (AHO) which automatically switches on the headlamp which can save people from a lot of accidents at night, especially around the corners. The second feature is Hero’s i3S. It stands for Idle Smart Stop System and has been seen on previous Hero bikes like - the Splendor iSmart and Passion Pro . This feature helps in saving fuel as it switches off your engine if it is left idle for more than five seconds and then brings it back to life the moment

you pull the clutch. The third handy feature is a side stand indicator which lights up if you have your side stand popped open. I am sure we have seen countless people driving with the stand open (probably have been one of them as well) and this can hopefully minimise that from happening. The fit and finish of the meter console can only be described as ‘neat’! The black plastic on our black Achiever seemed to complement each other. The signs painted in a dark orange color were also pleasing to look at. The console has two big analogue dials for speed and rpm. There is also an analogue fuel indicator. The new Hero Achiever 150 offers you subtle looks, performance that can satisfy the teen in you and

Lewis Hamilton celebrate
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes team won his fifth United States Grand Prix race on October 23, 2016 in Austin, Texas, as he beat his team mate Nico Rosberg who had to be content with the second place. It was also the 50th victory of Hamilton’s F1 career, putting him one behind Alain Prost for second place in the all-time list. This is also the 3rd in a row at the Circuit of the Americas for Hamilton and 7th of the 2016 season so far. Nico Rosberg (331) leads the Drivers’ Championship by 26 points from Lewis Hamilton (305) in P2. The Mercedes AMG Petronas (636) lead Red Bull (400) by 236 points in the Constructors’ Championship. Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing took the final podium while his team mate Max Verstappen had to retire mid-race with suspected transmission issues. Sebastian Vettel finished fourth for Ferrari, whose second car also failed to make the flag as Kimi Raikkonen was the victim of a pit stop that went terribly wrong. Sergio Perez of Force India came in 8th while his team mate Nico Hulkenburg could not finish the race. Fernando Alonso came in fifth for McLaren, ahead of Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz and Williams’ Felipe Massa. McLaren’s Jenson Button and Haas’s Romain Grosjean completed the top ten. Earlier in the race Valtteri Bottas of Williams and Nico Hulkenberg had a bump in that first corner which hurt both their races. The German retired his damaged Force India at the end of the lap, while the Finn pitted with a puncture and struggled home for a 16th position for Williams. The opening lap was almost disastrous for Force India, as Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat spun Perez in Turn 11, but the Mexican fought back quite well. As he took eighth, Kvyat was 12th as he got himself a 10-second penalty.

Marquez crowned in Motegi drama in Japanese MotoGP
Marc Marquez leading in Japan; Pics courtesy: Honda It was a stunning win for Repsol Honda Team’s Marc Marquez as he crossed the chequered flag to claim the 2016 MotoGP World Championship at a place that could not have been more appropriate. Yes, Hondas home in Japan. The race which was marked by a lot of drama saw Movistar Yamaha teammates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo crash out of contention. First to go was Rossi, into the gravel early – before Lorenzo’s ride through the pain barrier after a highside on Saturday was cut short; sliding out of P2 in the last few laps. Marquez, however continued to race perfectly to win his third premier class title in four years, and his fifth victory of the year. Marquez’s win came after an initial battle between him and Rossi. But early in the race, a crash for Eugene Laverty (Pull&Bear Aspar Team) saw the Irishman out the race– his first DNF of the year – as the three legends Lorenzo, Marquez and Rossi fought for supremacy. Then came disaster as Rossi, the nine-time World Champion made a mistake and lost the front end of his Yamaha – leaving teammate Lorenzo to stop Marquez from his win. But then Lorenzo too committed an error that led to his crashing out, sliding on the gravel and riding through the pain barrier. There was no looking back for Marquez as he rode on to claim his third crown, and glory at the home of Honda. This was his third title in four years in the premier class, and his fifth World Championship after becoming 125 World Champion in 2010 and Moto2 World Champion in 2012.

Crutchlow records win number 2 in Phillip Island AustralianGP Even though Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) may have won the Moto GP 2016 championship, the win by Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) in Australian GP held on the race track of Phillip Island on October 23, 2016 proved that there is a lot more excitement left in the remaining races of the MotoGP. Phillip Island lies just off Australia’s southern coast in the Pacific Ocean. As for the race, it saw the champion Marquez crashing out and Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) storming up
from P15 but unable to go past Crutchlow who kept his cool for a stunning second career victory. Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Maverick Viñales completed the podium. The fight for P2 between Crutchlow and Aleix Espargaro (Team Suzuki Ecstar) saw the Brit emerge on top, as Rossi was charging through the field – picking off Pol Espargaro and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) as the rider from Tavullia entered podium contention, then setting his sights on Aleix Espargaro and soon getting past.

Thus, Mahindra Racing has made an impressive start to its third season in the FIA Formula E Championship, scoring a podium finish and setting the fastest lap in the inaugural race. Like his fellow podium finishers, Sebastien Buemi of Renault e.dams and Lucas di Grassi of Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport, Nick too had to work hard to make his energy last. He did it perfectly, crossing the line as he hit zero per cent. German driver Nick Heidfeld

started the 45-lap race from 10th place on the grid and took advantage of first lap chaos to jump to fifth. By managing his first M3Electro’s available energy, Heidfeld and Mahindra Racing were able to time his mid-race car swap in order to gain more positions. He moved up to third, focused on completing clean laps during the second half of the race and crossed the finish line just before his second car reached zero percent energy in its battery. Swedish rookie Felix Rosenqvist, the other Mahindra Racing driver endured a tough beginning to his Formula E career. Having started from an encouraging sixth place on the grid, he was caught out in early race traffic. Then damage to his M3Electro from a high-speed
spin sent him to the back of the pack, forcing an early car swap. Never one to give up, Rosenqvist showed his mettle and true potential by setting the fastest lap of the race en route to a 15th place finish. Sebastien Beumi continued his winning streak as he is the reigning FIA Formula E Champion and he got his title defence off to a perfect start with victory in the HKT Hong Kong ePrix. With 30,000 people attending the event, the new Formula E season began with one of the most unpredictable races so far. Mahindra Racing is fourth in the FIA Formula E Teams Championship going into race two in Marrakesh (North Africa) next month on November 12. Formula E’s third season will see
Mahindra Racing visit a total of ten different countries for 12 races from October 2016 through to July 2017.

Anindith Reddy wins Euro JK 16 event in National Racing Championship On a day that internationally renowned stunt driver Terry Grant dazzled Coimbatore’s racing fans, Anindith Reddy of Hyderabad emerged as a star himself, springing to the top of the ladder in the Euro JK 16 event at the 19th JK Tyre-FMSCI National Racing Championship in Coimbatore on Sunday, October 9, 2016. He now shares the lead with Ananth Shanmugam in the tussle for the title with 76 points. LGB Formula 4 racer Vishnu Prasad and JK Touring Cars star Asish Ramaswamy too made it a special weekend for themselves by winning all their races over the two days and consolidating their championship positions. The day, however, belonged to world record holder Terry, who along with India’s own heroes Hari Singh, Rohitaaz Singh and Sunny Kumar, unveiled a series of stunts that had the fully packed Kari Motor Speedway arena screaming for more. The UK stuntman effortlessly tilted his car and drove on only the two right side wheels that looked impossible, even funny, in movies. A sequence of 360 degree turns, including a few around a brave female model standing on the track, left the spectators agape. Bangalore’s Ananth added 28 points to his kitty to turn the Euro JK 16 into a three-way fight for the title. Nayan Chatterjee, the overnight leader, is at third place with 73 points, just three adrift of the current champions. Mumbai’s Nayan managed only three fourth-place finishes to garner just 15 points in Round 3. His car slowly wilted away as the weekend unravelled, eventually failing to even finish the last race. Vishnu of Meco Racing, who has been in impeccable form over the weekend, completed a hat-trick of victories by adding the two LGB races on Sunday to his earlier conquests. He is on 66 points in the championship race now, perhaps just one win away in the final round. Chennai’s Vishnu comfortably won the day’s opening race but had to be at his defensive best to pull it off in the second one. Raghul Rangasamy, also of Meco, pushed him all the way till the end, crossing the chequered flag just .023 seconds behind him. Raghul took the third place in the morning race for a cumulative tally of 51 points. He added a cool 22 points over the weekend. Saran Vikram of Privateer and Rohit Khanna of Dark Don Racing are on third and fourth places with 37 and 35 points respectively. Asish Ramaswamy of Red Rooster Performance, who had already pocketed the JK Touring Cars title on Saturday, maintained his winning streak to underline his supremacy. The Bangalore racer has amazingly won all six races in his category to be sitting on a unsurpassable tally of 120 points.

REVIEW iPHONE 7 On the surface, the new iPhone 7 looks quite like the iPhone 6 but there are some subtle changes that give it a much cleaner look than before. Apple has replaced the physical home button with a taptic feedback unit that even vibrates when you press it. It has a slightly brighter 4.7 inch display with a resolution of 750X1334 pixels. You also get dual speakers, one housed at the bottom and the other being the earpiece at the top. These might not be as stereo as one would expect but definitely make this device the loudest iPhone yet. The Apple iPhone 7 comes with Apple’s latest iOS 10 and houses a bigger 1960mAh battery to add some more hours to the battery life of the device. Apple’s latest quad core A10 Fusion chipset is both powerful and energy efficient. The 2GB of RAM and six core graphics processor only complement the CPU in handling heavy apps, games and multitasking easily. The rear has a 12MP shooter with a f/1.8 aperture and quad LED flash. There is also OIS for taking better pictures in low light. For selfies you get a 7MP camera that can shoot full 1080p videos. The pictures taken by both the cameras offer great amount of detail. Due to Optical Image Stabilization, the videos shot on the iPhone 7 are quite steady. While this new rendition of the iPhone might have not been groundbreaking, it is still a solidly built upgrade (especially with it becoming water and dust resistant). The abandoning of the headphone jack is definitely not going be taken so easily but Apple has taken enough measures to try and smooth out the transition.

IS IT FOR ME? SONY PLAYSTATION 4 PRO When it comes to high end console gaming we only see two mammoths locking horns for the top spot - Sony and Microsoft. Now with VR and 4k becoming more common, both companies are taking steps to fulfill these needs and thus we will be getting PlayStation 4 Pro from Sony and a new console by Microsoft that has been given the name Project Scorpio as of now. As with every new release of consoles, a lot of people are left with questions like, “Should I buy it?” or “Is it for me?”. We try to answer that question.
IT IS....
If you own previous generation consoles this one is definitely going to feel like a big improvement. You get Virtual Reality, HDR and 4k resolutions and 4k streaming for Youtube and Netflix. Games running at lower resolutions will get a boost in performance. Any game that runs on the Pro will also run on the PS4 and vice-versa. The $399 price tag is surely less than what it’s competitor Xbox is going to be priced at.
IT IS NOT....
If you do not own a 4k TV or plan to get one then the ability of the PS4 Pro to play games and videos at 4k is rendered useless. Sony is rolling out a software update to the PS4 and Slim that will enable HDR support on them so the Pro loses that advantage as well. Microsoft’s Project Scorpio is going to be more powerful than the PS4 Pro in terms of specs so it would be a good decision to wait and watch for what it has to offer.

Speaks MAHESH BABU S. CEO, Mahindra Electric Report : P. THARYAN How has it been for Mahindra Electric, ever since the company acquired Reva? Mahindra acquired Reva in 2010 and has been constantly investing in technology in Mahindra Electric. Our strategy in the last 18 months has been to not only make electric cars like e2o, but also use our electric technology and power other electric vehicles within the Mahindra Group. We are also looking at the outside world. Our technology is globally competent. We launched the e2o in London in April 2016. It meets all the regulations in Europe and the vehicle is already on the roads. One is to take a lot of technology and take it to the global level, the other is to expand the technology to other mobility solutions. So we launched the e-Verito in June this year which is India’s first full-fledged electric sedan. We have recently also launched the e-Supro which is both for the passenger and cargo variants. Is this car meant for the masses? I like the words Anand Mahindra used at the launch in London when he compared
Mahindra and Tesla. He talked about the hare and tortoise story. It is very simple. Mahindra has always been looking at affordable mobility in any space. So we are saying that we want electric vehicles be owned by the common man in India and abroad. Our aim is to make electric mobility affordable, while there are some aspirational elements to look for. We rather say that we will play a larger role in affordable mobility. Thus the e2o Plus will be a car for the city and it will out smart many of the problems in the city, like congestion, pollution, maneuverability, etc. We are going to play a role in transforming mobility, particularly urban mobility with the new e2o Plus. What was the response of this car in a developed and mature market like England? The e2o was very well received in London. Unfortunately after the Brexit, we could not do large numbers. However, the product has been appreciated in a very niche segment. It is too early now, we have to wait and watch. With the e2oPlus is in the Indian market, we will be thrilled to see it transform urban mobility in Indian cities.
For a vehicle like this to succeed or a tehnology like this to succeed, a bit of government hand holding is required? Yes, for electric mobility to become successful, needs technology, the eco system and it needs all the stake holders working together. We are working with governments, with academic institutions like IITs and we are investing hugely on technology. We are working on both market related investments and also engaging with stake holders like the government. The government recently gave the FAME scheme for vehicle and infrastructure subsidy. But infrastructure plays an important role in electric vehicles. We are putting in our efforts and the government is also taking steps to improve infrastructure but it is taking time. I am sure it will progress and will not be a bottle neck in the future. So is this the beginning of an electric revolution in the Mahindra stable? Looking at the car, e2o Plus, I would say it’s a start of a revolution but we are still evolving things. With
commitment from Mahindra group and investment on technology and products, I strongly believe that the future is going to be exciting. (Excerpts) How has the e20Plus evolved as a car? The e2o Plus has the DNA or basics of the e2o but if you ask me, it is a kind of an all new car. We have substantially read the customer’s requirements and also increased the technology in the car. It is highly powerful and the range has gone up to 140km, based on customer feedback. It also has a powerful motor so you get a zippy drive and is highly maneuverable. You also have a best in class knee room for the rear passengers. For convenience, you also get two more doors. By and large, it is longer, it gives more space to the customers and it has new technologies like Android based infotainment system, a telematics system which connects the car all the time to our servers. I would say it is a car that will now take electric vehicles to the next level. (For full interview log on to www.motownindia.com)

Corporate tussle in Tata Group turns Ugly MOTOWN INDIA BUREAU
• Cyrus Mistry ousted from Chairman post • Ratan Tata made Interim Chairman • Cyrus Mistry comes out with guns blazing in letter to Tata Sons’ Board • Says he was pushed to becoming “lame duck” Chairman • Wrong investments could “potentially result in a write down over time of about Rs.118,000 crore (US 17.65billion)” • Nano project has “consistently lost money, peaking at Rs.1000 crores”

ut of the blue, the hallowed precincts of the Tata Group became a battleground for corporate supremacy when in a meeting held in Mumbai on October 24, 2016, the Tata Sons Board took a decision to replace Cyrus Mistry as Chairman, and putting in his place 78-year-old Ratan Tata as the Group’s Interim Chairman. Mistry did not take that lying down and immediately came out with his guns blazing in a hard hitting letter to the Directors of Tata Sons and to the Trustees of the Tata Trusts. He

said in his letter that “Being pushed into the position of a “lame duck” Chairman, my desire was to create an institutional framework for effective future governance of the group”. He accused the Tata group management of several financial misadventures in its investments that could “potentially result in a write down over time of about Rs 118,000 crores (US 17.65 billion approx.)”. A copy of the letter is in possession of Motown India. In a decision that sent the entire corporate world in a tizzy, Cyrus P. Mistry, Chairman of Tata Sons, was unceremoniously ousted from his post in an almost coup-like fashion.
The board members placed Ratan Tata as the interim Chairman of Tata Sons. In his letter, Mistry said that he cannot believe that he was removed on grounds of non-performance. “As you are aware, the Nomination and Remuneration Committee comprising Vijay Singh, Farida Khambata and Ronnen Sen, independent directors (two of whom have voted for my removal now), had only recently lauded and commended my performance,” he said. Sounding several financial alarms, Mistry stated that if one were to look at the aggregate data between 2011 and 2015 and limit the

analysis largely to the legacy hotspots (IHCL, Tata Motors PV, Tata Steel Europe, Tata Power Mundra and Teleservices), it will show that the capital employed in those companies has risen from Rs 132,000 crore to Rs 196,000 crore (due to operational losses, interest and capex). “This figure is close to the networth of the group which is at Rs 174,000 crore. A realistic assessment of the fair value these businesses could potentially result in a write down over time of about Rs 118,000 crore,” Mistry stated.
NANO PROJECT: Writing about the Nano small car project, the dream project of Ratan Tata, Mistry noted that this product “has consistently lost money, peaking at Rs 1000 crores. As there is no line of sight to profitability for the Nano, any turnaround strategy for the company requires to shut it down. Emotional reasons alone have kept us away from this crucial decision. Another challenge in shutting down Nano is that it would stop the supply of the Nano gliders to an entity that makes electric cars in which Mr Tata has a stake.” Mistry revealed that he was a reluctant candidate for the chairman’s post of Tata Sons. In 2011, he said, after some exploration by a search committee, he was approached by both Ratan Tata and Lord Bhattacharya individually to be a candidate for the position. “I politely declined. I had myself built a business which I could continue to run. However, as the search process progressed and the committee was unable to find a suitable candidate, I was asked to reconsider. After consulting my family and in the broader interests of the Tata Group, I took courage to overcome my initial reluctance and agreed to consider the position,” he wrote. He minced no words in his opening remarks to the Tata Sons Directors when he said that he
was shocked beyond words at the happenings of the board meeting of October 24, 2016. “Apart from the invalidity and illegality of the business that was conducted, I have to say that the Board of Directors has not covered itself with glory”. Cyrus Mistry was at the helm of affairs at Tata Sons for the last four years. A day later after the new development, Ratan N. Tata asked Tata companies to act as leaders in their respective markets and enhance returns to shareholders. “The companies must focus on their market position vis-à-vis competition, and not compare themselves to their own past. The drive must be on leadership rather than to follow,” he said, addressing Managing Directors and senior leaders of Tata companies. Tata said, “I look forward to working with you as we have worked together in the past. An institution must exceed the people who lead it. I am proud of all of you, and let us continue to build the group together.” He asked the leadership of the companies to focus on their respective businesses, without being concerned about change in leadership. Referring to ongoing initiatives in the companies, he said, “We will evaluate and continue to undertake those that are required to. If there is any change, they will be discussed with you.” Tata reiterated
that he had assumed the role of the Interim Chairman for stability and continuity so that there is no vacuum. “This will be for a short time. A new permanent leadership will be in place,” he emphasised. Meanwhile, Dr. Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, and N. Chandrasekaran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), were appointed as Additional Directors on the Tata Sons Board. Commenting on their appointment, Ratan Tata, Interim Chairman of Tata Sons, said, “This is in recognition of their exemplary leadership in their companies.” Meanwhile, the Tata group played safe and filed caveat in several courts to avoid any exparte order against the group that may arise from this ouster of Mistry.
STOCK MARKET CLARIFICATION: The Bombay Stock Exchange has sought clarification from the company with respect to the news relating to the Tata Group facing “$18 Billion in Writedowns.” The reply from the group is awaited, BSE said in a note. While going to press, it was rumoured that Tata Sons directors were getting ready to reply to Mistry’s allegations.

Mahindra acquires controlling stake in Classic Legends
Aims to co-create a lifestyle mobility company with BSA, JAWA
M
ahindra & Mahindra is on an acquisition spree in both its four-wheeler as well as twowheeler businesses. After buying controlling stakes in companies like car maker Ssangyong of South Korea and Italian vehicle design company Pininfarina, the company is focussing on its two-wheeler business. The company has now unveiled plans to refocus on its two wheeler business and will be targeting premium niche segments. M&M has acquired a controlling stake in Classic Legends which in turn has acquired BSA Company including all its existing global brand rights. Classic Legends has also signed an exclusive Brand License agreement with Jawa, for India and select geographies in Asia. With the acquisition of Classic Legends, M&M aims to co-create a lifestyle mobility company with exciting and relevant partners across products and services, and enters into previously untapped segments using iconic brands like BSA and Jawa, a company note said. In the Indian two-wheeler market, Mahindra has yet to make a dent, even though they are fairly young, having acquired Kinetic Motors in 2008. From April to September, 2016 the cumulative domestic sales of two-wheelers in the country stood at 9536952 units. Mahindra Two wheelers could only clock cumulative sales of 33165 units, a negative growth of 55pc as compared to the corresponding period last year. Mahindra currently sells products like the Duro, Rodeo, Gusto, Centuro and Mojo. Classic Legends (CLPL) is a company engaged in manufacturing and marketing twowheelers. CLPL is a Mumbai-based, unlisted company, which is yet to start commercial operations. It was incorporated in June, 2015, according to reports. M&M made its entry into the two-wheeler segment by acquiring Pune based Kinetic Motors. Mahindra Two Wheelers Limited will continue with production at its Pithampur plant in Madhya Pradesh where the existing brands of Centuro, Gusto and Mojo will continue to be made, the company noted. The company will continue its exports especially to the Africa and Asian markets. There would be a continued focus on the Mojo both in marketing and

product investment. Mahindra holds a 51pc stake in France based Peugeot Motocycles (through MTWL Europe) where it focuses on growth in its European markets. PMTC will focus on premium new products such as the Metropolis, Django and Speedfight, the Mahindra press note stated. The two companies had announced on January 20, 2015 that they had completed the necessary formalities for Mahindra Two Wheelers’ 51pc acquisition in PMTC. PMTC, a key player in urban mobility in Europe for 116 years, is the oldest motorised two-wheeler manufacturer in the world. Peugeot Scooters offers one of the most comprehensive range of scooters and mopeds, from 50cc to 400cc, including the successful three wheeled scooter – Metropolis - in the European market.
BSA, JAWA HAVE A HERITAGE VALUE Both BSA & Jawa, have heritage value and consumer followings in many parts of the world. BSA which has a global appeal will be primarily suited to international markets, and Jawa with its cult following in India is more suited to the domestic market. According to the website classic-britishmotorcycles, in the 1950s England based BSA Motorcycles was a leading motorcycle manufacturer. The BSA Gold Star was a big hit both on the track and otherwise, with best sellers like BSA A7 (500 twin) and A10 (650 twin) non-unit twins. BSA also owned Triumph, Ariel, Sunbeam and New Hudson, and this was just a small part of the BSA empire, which also included cars, buses, steel, heavy construction equipment, agricultural and industrial powerplants, machine tools,
weapons, ammunition, military equipment, bicycles and more. By 1970, the once-mighty BSA was broke and irrelevant as a motorcycle company. Jawa, on the other hand is a a motorcycle manufacturer founded in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1929 by František Janeček, who bought the motorcycle division of Wanderer. The name JAWA was established by concatenating the first letters of Janeček and Wanderer. The company was nationalised and became state property in 1945. In the 1950s, JAWA was one of the top motorcycle manufacturers and exported its 350 (Pérák) to over 120 countries. Another famous model in the 1970s was the 350 Californian. It appeared in the typical black and red colours. After 1990, there was a significant loss of production. A successor company was formed in 1997 in continuing the name as JAWA Moto. The main business subjects of the company are research, development and the production of motorcycles, their spare parts and accessories. The basic elements of the production are moulding, welding, machining, paint technology and assembly. The company also specialises in the production of tools and instruments for the plastic moulding industry. Classic Legends would leverage the best global capabilities in design and engineering, along with the expertise available at Mahindra Racing’s technical development centre in Italy, to design and launch products that capture the brand DNA and ethos, of these iconic brands.

TECHNOLOGY
Continental puts first 48-volt hybrid drive into production Continental is electrifying one diesel variant of both the new Renault Scénic and Grand Scénic models. The system, offered as a “Hybrid Assist” uses a 48volt hybrid drive in production vehicles for the first time. The technology is a particularly costefficient solution to significantly reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Instead of the conventional starter generator, the system uses an electric motor with a continuous output of six kilowatts (10kW temporary), which drives the crankshaft of the engine via a belt. The electric motors with integrated inverter are supplied from the Continental plant in Nuremberg. Since 2013, Continental engineers have been working together with Renault on a hybrid drive, which is so cost-efficient to produce that it becomes an
appealing option for mid-size vehicles. To achieve this, the development partners have used low-voltage hybrid technology, which operates at 48 volts. This is in contrast with the considerably more expensive high-voltage technology, which operates at between 300 and 400 volts and is usually used in hybrid vehicles. However, the 48-volt system facilitates significant savings. Therefore, with the mild-hybrid system, Renault is aiming for combined fuel consumption of 3.5 litres of diesel per 100 km. They are also aiming to reduce the new Scénic´s CO2 emissions to 92 grams per kilometre, which is a new CO2 benchmark in this vehicle class. This is possible because the electric motor, operated as a generator, also converts a large proportion of the braking energy into electricity,
which is temporarily stored in a small battery. This electricity can then be specifically used to relieve the internal combustion engine. This is also the reason why nitrogen oxide emissions and exhaust particles, especially in urban traffic, are reduced when a 48-volt drive is combined with a diesel engine. The 48-volt solution from Continental is relatively easy to combine with preexisting internal combustion engines, as it does not require any more room than a conventional starter generator. This is due to the high power to size ratio of the electric motor, which does not contain rare earth
materials. This is achieved by water cooling of the stator and the high efficiency of the induction motor. To save space, the inverter, which is needed to convert direct current stored in the battery into alternating current required for operation, is integrated in the housing lid of the motor. The ready-to-install 48-volt drive is manufactured at the Continental plant in Nuremberg, which already specialises in complex electronic modules, such as those used for automatic transmissions.
